She will compete for Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen 2017 in June in Columbus, GA. Mia is a Junior at Harrison High School. The pageant was sponsored by Miss Kennesaw/Miss Paulding County Scholarship Organization which is an official preliminary of the Miss Georgia/Miss America Program.

CONGRATULATIONS

Acworth resident, Cadet Frankend Abaio has taken a tremendous step in his military career. On November 10 Abio was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army at Georgia Military College. Abaio plans to attend UGA in January to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. He will continue to serve with the Georgia National Guard as he continues his education.

Calumet West Lights

Calumet West Subdivision in West Cobb has again designated Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as the neighborhood’s official charity for the 2016 Holiday Season, and will show off their holiday lights at their traditional “Christmas House” for the occasion! To date the neighborhood has raised nearly $20,000 for the hospital, and hopes to set a new annual record of over $5,000. Calumet West Homeowners Association President Loretta Austin remarked, “Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is such a worthy cause, and Calumet West is proud to support this charity that does so much for all our children. To encourage everyone to make a donation the HOA Board of Directors has voted to match all contributions by our neighbors and friends up to a total match of $1,000. We hope everyone will come enjoy the lights and make a generous donation.” The Christmas House is located at 1010 Token Way, Kennesaw, GA 30152 in the Calumet West Subdivision off Hadaway Road. Use the West Mill Drive entrance, turn right on Peace Drive and left on Token Way to view the lights. There is a donation box in front of the house, and visitors are encouraged to make the suggested donation of $5.00 per car. The lights will be in operation from December 2 through December 31, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Now that the presidential election is over, and with Republicans controlling both the House of Representatives and the Senate for at least the next two years, the chances of a change in the tax code are very high. Uncertainty comes into play, though, because what Mr. Trump wants and what Congress wants may not be the same. Last June the House Ways and Means Committee rolled out a “blueprint” for reforming the tax code. Some of Mr. Trump’s plans for tax reform are similar to the House’s plan, but some are not. Mr. Trump would like to reduce the current tax brackets from seven to three. So, instead of the current brackets of 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33%, and 39.6% there would be just 12%, 25%, and 33%. (This is already a change in his original plan in order to conform to those currently in the House’s plan.) Both plans call for an increase in the standard deduction. The standard deduction for Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) is currently at $12,600. Under Mr. Trump’s plan, the standard deduction would be $30,000 for MFJ. The House proposal would change the standard deduction for MFJ to $24,000. Mr. Trump would like to cap itemized deductions at $200,000 for Married Filing Joint returns. The House plan proposes allowing only mortgage interest and charitable contributions as itemized deductions. Both the House plan and Mr. Trump’s plan would eliminate the exemption amounts for each person claimed on individual tax returns. The House plan, though, includes increases to the child tax credit (from $1000 to $1500), as well as providing credits for dependents that are not children ($500). Some of these are refundable; some are not. The tax rates for long-term capital gains and dividends will also be affected by changes in the tax code. The House plan calls for changes to the capital gains rates from 0%, 15%, and 20% to 6%, 12.5%, and 16.5%. Mr. Trump wants to keep the rates the same, but abolish the additional 3.8% net investment income tax on high income taxpayers. Tax planning for 2017 is just guesswork at this point. We probably won’t know the impact of a new tax code until well into 2017. And then there’s a likelihood of the changes being applied retroactively to January 1, 2017. The only thing we can be certain of is that change is coming.

Trains, Trains, Trains - January 28 and 29!

The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History will host the seventh annual installment of its flagship Trains, Trains, Trains event on Saturday, January 28 and Sunday, January 29. This must-see event for families in the area will be held from 9:30am to 5:00pm both days. This year’s event will feature several new and expanded train layouts. Modular modelers from around the Southeast will join forces to create some of the biggest layouts this event has seen. Athens Bend Track, whose N-scale layout in the Cobb Gallery last year was a huge hit, is teaming up with South Carolina Bend Track to fill the Gallery with an even bigger, even more detailed layout! Last year’s layout featured everything from a model railroad yard to a model drive-in theater to a fight between a miniature King Kong and a miniature T-Rex, so make sure you stop in to see all the neat details – who knows what you’ll find? Trains, Trains, Trains 2017 will bring back some of last year’s favorite bluegrass musicians, an expanded General Emporium gift shop with new shirts and toys, and several interactive layouts for kids of all ages to enjoy! Museum admission for the event is $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors, $5.50 for children ages 4-12, and free for children three and under as well as Museum members. Pre-sale tickets will be available online beginning in January, so save time and skip the line by buying tickets early! For more information, call 770-427-2117 ext. 3058 or visit southernmuseum.org. The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District (Metro Water District) is urging residents and businesses to conserve water and follow the outdoor watering restrictions required under the state’s “Level 2” drought response, which was declared today by the Director of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division. Under the Level 2 drought response, outdoor watering of lawns, gardens and trees is limited to the hours of 4 pm to 10 am a maximum of twice a week (even addresses and sites with no numbered address on Wednesday and Saturday, and odd addresses on Thursday and Sunday). The Level 2 drought response prohibits a number of outdoor watering activities, including: Washing hard surfaces such as streets and sidewalks. Water for ornamental purposes, such as fountains. The use of fire hydrants, except for firefighting and public safety. Non-commercial washing of vehicles. Non-commercial pressure washing. Fundraising car washes. However, the following water uses are allowed any time, when needed: Irrigation of personal food gardens Irrigation of new and replanted seed, or turf, in landscapes for a period of 30 days following installation. By Amy Carrier, President, WellStar Cobb Hospital Families across Cobb took turns around the dining table, sharing in the spirit of Thanksgiving. How to Live

Deron Singh, Kennesaw Fit Body Boot Camp You can live your dreams or you can live your fears. Now, if you allow your fear to take charge, understand your dreams become deferred. And when they do, they’re harder to actually start. Every time you procrastinate, you’re allowing that fear to grow inside making it find more reasons as why you can’t pursue your dreams. Here’s my advice to you -I don’t care who you are or what you do, never let anything get in between you and your dreams. It truly doesn’t matter what your dream is, never let anything deter you from it. We’re all given ideas at birth with the ability to change the world. You have talent and ability but the two can’t come in to the equation unless you apply the effort or take action. It’s going to take time for you to achieve great things and that is necessary. Without time, you can’t reflect on the things that you’ve learned on the way. More importantly without time, you can experience living. The fear of failing is inevitable, yet you must accept it for what it is. Taking action also means taking risks. Without risks, you can’t reach your dreams. There’s no need to wait for circumstances to be ideal or what you currently have going on in your life. All that matters is doing what you can, where you are, with what you have. Don’t fall into the trap of needing abundance in resources to achieve your dreams. If you can do a lot with a little, just imagine what you can do when you get a lot? Let your limitations be your advantage and open your mind up to possibilities. Never live a settled life. If you do what everyone wants you to do or go with the flow, you won’t be happy. Until you start doing what you want to do, you won’t have a life. Life is precious . Don’t give up on it. For more info Text 678.273.2048.

TIPS FOR A STRESS FREE CHRISTMAS dr. cris eaton

Christmas can be a very stressful time of year. For many the Christmas holiday period is a mass of complex social interactions with family or relatives, some of whom you may rather not see. There could well be expectations, or at least perceived expectations, to create a ‘wonderful Christmas’ with presents and perhaps the most important meal of the year. Some people rate Christmas as being more stressful than divorce or being burgled. Don’t let the festive season get you down: follow the tips and advice you find here, relax and enjoy yourself. Step One: Plan Ahead, Step Two: Shop Online and Shop Local, Step Three: Know When to Stop.

Keep Calm: Play some relaxing music, perhaps seasonal carols, and burn some scented candles, incense or aromatherapy oil. Take a relaxing hot bath to unwind. Practice Breathing: When we’re stressed our heart beat increases and our breathing shallows, it’s all part of the fight or flight reaction. Work on reversing this process and take time to breathe deeply. Breathe in deeply through your nose, hold for 15 or 20 seconds and then breathe slowly out through your mouth, repeat for a few minutes to instantly help reduce stressful feelings. Have a ‘Great Escape’ Plan: It’s a good idea to have some pre-planned excuses to escape from proceedings if they get too stressful. Be imaginative and use things such as leaving the room to make a phone-call to a friend or perhaps checking on a neighbor. Just by having planned a couple of escape routes you’ll probably feel less stressed anyway but actually leaving the situation, even for 10 minutes, will help clear your mind and relax you. Make Time for Exercise: Christmas is, for many, a time of excessive eating and drinking and exercise can be easily overlooked. Diets are particularly popular in January! Exercise is a great way to reduce stress as it burns off hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline and helps produce mood-enhancing endorphins. Try going for a walk after dinner as the fresh air and exercise will lift your mood and make you feel better. Avoid Excessive Alcohol: Avoid excessive alcohol as it dehydrates your body and makes your liver work overtime to process it. Drink as much water or juice as alcohol as this will help you to stay hydrated, feel better and therefore cope better with stressful situations. Have Fun: Remember it’s your Christmas too so try to relax and have fun, laugh and be merry. If you do find others around you difficult then try to rise above the situation. If things don’t go to plan try not to worry too much, instead laugh about them and make them into fun memories that you can talk about during Christmases to come. “Remember that time Mom set fire to the sprouts!”.

Have a great, stress-free, Christmas! Editor’s Note: And make an appointment with Dr. Cris. Call her at 770-429-9733.

RAISING FUNDS FOR A PTSD SERVICE DOG

Mario Campisano is a member of the Post 304 in Acworth Georgia, and one of the projects that the Post sponsors is a PTSD fund-raiser to train service dogs for our service members who suffer from PTSD. These service dogs provide hope and the ability for the soldiers to lead a normal life. Most of you have heard about the 22 a day, and for those of you who have not, 22 soldiers a day take their lives due to PTSD. It saddens Mario that this goes on and he really struggles every time he hears that another one of our heroes took their own life. Because of this project at Post 304, Mario decided to start a fund raiser to raise money to support this effort. Using his love of running as his base, Mario’s initial goal was to raise $100 for each mile he ran, so in the end, the total would be $600 for a 10K run. With the help of social media, he was able to raise the $600 in about one week, so he decided to raise the amount to $1,500, which took about three weeks to raise. Because of the response he received, he finally set a goal of $6,000, which at the time, was the cost to train a single dog. Mario is happy to report that he completed the 2015 Peachtree Road Race in about 55 minutes, and a few weeks after the race, was able to raise the $6,000 for the service dog. Paws Be Good, www.pawsbegood.com, is the organization we work with to train these dogs. Paws Be Good rescues dogs from shelters and trains them for our veterans. Because of the relationship we have with Paws Be Good, they have been able to reduce the fees to train the service dogs, which allows us to support more veterans!! Mario is happy to report, we have raised close to $10,000 for this effort. If you are interested in supporting this cause, you may do so by sharing this on all your social media outlets, and if possible, making a contribution. Please make your tax deductible checks to, “American Legion Post 304”. Checks can be mailed to following address: Mario Campisano, PO Box 2133, Kennesaw, GA 30156. Mario will personally deliver these checks to the American Legion Post 304 and he will also send a thank you letter with 501c information for your tax deduction. Kennesaw Mountain Drama Earns State Title

Kennesaw Mountain High School’s Drama Department placed first in the State One-act Play Competition in Warner Robins Saturday, November 12 in the new 7A classification. The new 7A class is compiled of the state’s largest 44 high schools. Kennesaw Mountain presented the heart-warming comedy, The Boys New Door, by Tom Griffin after winning their 3 – 7A region beating Hillgrove, North Cobb, McEachern, and North Paulding for the opportunity to advance to the state competition. At the state level, KMHS faced Milton (second), Archer (third), and Norcross (fourth), Lowndes County, Newnan, Etowah, and Mill Creek. The play tells the story of four mentally challenged men who lived together and the emotional toll that it takes on their caretaker. At the region competition, senior Matt de Leon received Region Best Actor while senior Landon Ebuna, and junior, Carson Colenbaugh were selected to the Region All-Star Cast.

At the state competition, KMHS received a standing ovation and praise from the three judges. Director, Coy Dunn said. “I am extremely proud of this group. They have worked hard and continuous improved week after week. They are a very talented group of actors, but they are also an awesome group of young people. It’s been a lot of fun getting to work with them.” KMHS is now preparing fro their next show, the musical play, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to be performed January 19 - 21. KSU’s Continuing Education Open House Set for Jan. 11

Each January, roughly one in three Americans resolve to better themselves in some way. According to a study by the Opinion Corporation of Princeton, of those who do set resolutions, 47 percent are related to self-improvement or education. Melissa Amavisca, KSU continuing education graduate is one who set a goal and continued to move forward with her education. Today, Amavisca is making a daily impact in the rapidly expanding healthcare field with the certificates she earned at KSU’s Continuing Education. Her drive and determination didn’t stop there. After completing each certificate training course, Amavisca successfully passed the state and national exams for each program. She also acquired a Certified Patient Care Technician certification to boost her résumé. “I was interested in the CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) program at first because I wanted to work in a nursing home to gain some experience,” Amavisca said. “I took the CNA program with no intent of taking anything else, but I fell in love with KSU’s College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) and the staff,” she said. “I came back and took Phlebotomy Technician and EKG Technician.” With 12 classroom-based professional certificate programs and more than 25 onlinebased programs in health care training, CCPE offers prospective students several paths to a successful career at a fraction of the time and cost of similar programs. The Open House, held at the KSU Center on Jan.11 from 6 to 9 p.m., will feature interactive, information sessions exploring professional certificate programs from Medical Assisting to Certified Nursing Assistant to Phlebotomy Technician and Health Coach. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and speak with instructors and graduates to discuss programs and career options. Additionally, a 10 percent discount coupon will be given to all Open House attendees. Highlighted healthcare programs at the Open House include:

Christmas Toys for Our Local Service Men and Women

THE THINK MELISSA TEAM is collecting toys and gift cards to support our local military families through The Georgia National Guard Family Program Office. Thank you in advance for your contributions and making this an amazing Christmas for these well deserving families, who sacrifice for us all. Please help spread the word. The donation deadline is 12/14/16. With all the financial cutbacks, we are seeing more and more of our Service Members and Families struggling to make ends meet. Now more than ever we are really relying on volunteers and your kind donations. The Christmas Assistance Program is designed to be a supplemental program for Service Members that are struggling financially (due to unemployment, underemployment, illness, wounded or a single parent, etc.) and are not able to provide for their children. Those in need may be deployed, have recently returned from overseas, are classified as a wounded warrior or are a traditional National Guardsman. You can deliver your donations (UNWRAPPED PLEASE) to my office (Atlanta Communities, 3405 Dallas Hwy #720, Marietta, GA 30064 – Attention Melissa Krudwig) in Marietta; to BounceU, 1634 Cobb International Blvd NW, Kennesaw, GA 30152; AquaTots, 2655 Cobb Pkwy NW Suite 102, Kennesaw, GA 30152; or contact me to coordinate another option at 770-310-3269 (M) or Melissa@ThinkMelissa.com. A WONDERFUL TIME TO LIVE IN KENNESAW BY DEREK EASTERLING, KENNESAW MAYOR

What a wonderful time to live in Kennesaw and what a wonderful season is upon us! Yes, Thanksgiving Day and the turkey leftover dishes of 2016 are mere memories and we’re moving forward to the Christmas Season. Our December calendars are filled with a multitude of holiday events from choral concerts to tree lightings, from Christmas plays to ballet productions, and of course, destination and online shopping trips for the perfect gift for everyone on your list. In the middle of all of the activity, I urge each of you to take time to reflect on this year and how far we have come together as a community. The City is engaged in a multitude of road improvement projects, business development efforts, and numerous quality of life projects all in an effort to engage, encourage, and support your family. This past year, Kennesaw achieved accolades for being a “safest place to live city in Georgia” and a “top 10-percent small city to live” in the United States. These achievements are a direct reflection of you and your level of commitment and participation within the community – congratulations! Recently, the City kicked-off the Comprehensive Plan Review. The comprehensive planning process determines goals and aspirations in terms of community development. The outcome of this process is the Comprehensive Plan which dictates public policy regarding transportation, utilities, land use, recreation, and housing. It presents a vision for the future, with long-range goals and objectives for all activities affecting local government. For next year, will you take an active role in shaping the story of Kennesaw? Pray about what role you will have in these efforts and I look forward to speaking with you about your ideas. May God continue to bless you and your family during this Christmas Season and throughout 2017!

I love the enthusiasm of our high school students. Give them a project and they jump on it 150%. At the Taste of Kennesaw in September, NCHS and KMHS competed with each other to see who could collect the most canned goods for Shiloh United Methodist Church Food Pantry. NCHS won the competition, however the two schools collected together over 18,000 cans (that is alot). From The Bleachers

RAY BAKER, PITCHING COACH We all have heard it no matter if you are in the stands or in the dugout, on the sidelines, that voice of instruction, that voice of involvement. On the surface, that is a very innocent statement and the intent is to be helpful. What am I talking about, the dad coaching from the bleachers. I see it or I should say I hear it quite often, we all do, every game. It doesn’t matter if it’s recreation sports or high school the dad giving their kid advice, coaching from the stands. Here’s the problem with that. Many times more often than not, the dad is given his opinion, his advice at the same time the coach is trying to give instruction or give the player information. When this happens, too many voices are being heard and the player hears many times what the dad is saying and misses out on a key piece of information the coach is telling them. I get the enthusiasm; I get looking out for the best interest for your kid, but be respectful of the position of the coach. I’ve been around many parents that have a lot of knowledge of the game of baseball, knows the game, and knows how to coach. Every one of them knows when to pipe in and when not to be vocal. They truly know the game. They have a feel for the game. They know what they are saying, when to say it and what they are doing. They also know who the coach of the team is. I get you want and many times feel you know what is best for your child. I see it so many times with pitchers, with the quarterback, in basketball, the dad insist on their kid to look at them as they are coming off the field or court for their instruction. One of the many problems with it is the player’s mind is getting too cluttered with information and their instincts are not allowed to take over so they can perform at the highest level. So dads, know your role and allow your child’s abilities to come through during the game. Questions? Contact Ray at raybaseball@gmail.com

KNOWING AND SEEING THE CHRIST CHILD AT CHRISTMAS!

Rev. Sam Storey, Columnist Oh, you say, had I been there at Bethlehem that night I would have seen; I would have understood; I would have known it was the Christ child. Would you? There is one way of knowing: Ask yourself, what you have seen this Christmas Season? When you watched the 6:00 news did you see chaos and strife, or did you see sheep without a shepherd. When you went out to do your shopping did you see only hordes of people in the stores, or did you notice the worried expressions on some of their faces--worried because they are facing this Christmas without employment or enough money and they don’t know how they are going to make ends meet. Ask yourself, what did you hear this Christmas Season? Did you hear only the blast of music and carols, or did you hear the silent sighs of the lonely and the bereaved who may be dreading Christmas because it accentuates their loneliness. And in the midst of the sounds of honking horns and people arguing over parking places, did you hear faint sounds of laughter coming from M.U.S.T. Ministries or Center for Family Resources or your Church missions projects because you furnished food and clothes and toys for families and children. You see, so often what you see and what you hear is not dependent upon the event but upon you. If you did in fact hear the cry from the lonely, the laughter of poor children, if you saw the sheep without a shepherd, then, and only then, might you have noticed the events that took place in Bethlehem that night. If you lacked that spiritual seeing and hearing then you probably would have been with the 99% who were present but who saw or heard nothing out of the ordinary. In the end perhaps one of our carols says it best: No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin. Where meek souls shall receive him still, the dear Christ enters in. Amen. MERRY CHRISTMAS! COSTCO CARD TO THE RESCUE by Carol Thompson, Bright Side Editor

“Oh, No! I can’t find my driver’s license” - says I, forty five minutes before we needed to leave for the airport. I had very carefully put it in my pocket to make it easier to get through security. Visions of remaining in Arizona for ever, flashed before my eyes as my daughter Heather and I tore through her house in hopes of finding it. NADA! Next best thing was to jump in the car and head to the airport, praying for a miracle. Phoenix has an awesome transportation hotline. The gentleman who answered advised me to go to TSA Security check-in and explain that I had lost my license. He also advised me that TSA held the strings for me getting on or not getting on the airplane, so my attitude was paramount. Reaching the TSA desk I was asked a littany of questions, “do you have any other Federal issued ID (no), do you have credit cards (yes), library card (no), utility bill (no), etc” after listing about six items that were acceptable (I even asked him if my Facebook page counted), he finally asked - well, do you have a COSTCO CARD, with your photo on it?. “YES -YES - YES”, I was so excited. “Show it to me”, he says. I whipped it out and handed it to him. He took one look and said “Yep that is you alright”. However, merely having a COSTCO Card for identification did not absolve me from having a full body search (not offensive), or every piece of my luggage gone through (luckily I travel light). I passed and was allowed through security reaching my gate in plenty of time. Once I caught my breath, I realized that losing your photo i.d. was not an uncommon occurrence (at least not at Sky Harbor, Phoenix, AZ), There were three other people in line with me for the same reason. Editor’s note: My driver’s license has never shown up, it is like it dissolved into thin air. I do have my replacement license on the way.
