Sketch sprints The AFWJ sketch sprints started in response to a session that the National portrait gallery in Canberra put on in 2020 as a way to bring light into the locked down Australian life. On October 5th 2020, Maz, Kris, Sofia and Caroline sat down together to draw potatoes. Maz coined the name Coffee morning creations, we set up a messenger group to coordinate who would be able to set up the still life and since then ladies have joined in when possible, set up various still lifes and shared stories over a productive hour of creation. It has been shaped into something far greater than the original idea and it is always a privilege to see the diverse talents. This exhibition came about from a call for the AFWJ Ebina easter party and the artists are geographically close. The reality is that the talents run through all the districts. I hope we will have a comprehensive exhibition in the future. In the meantime, we also have the colour journal, so submit ladies. It is always a great treat to see your creations.

I take inspiration from my travels in Japan; the landscapes, the surroundings, the tales I listen to while cycling less traveled roads in the Japanese countryside. I try to unfold the story threads, incorporating vintage kimono and obi fabrics picked up on my way to sew textiles and patterns into new pictures inspired by the imagination of these untold stories.

Born in rural Australia, Caroline Sato grew up in the pristine beauty of raw nature. With a background in fashion design and kimono history, she now lives in the concrete mass of Kanagawa. To escape insanity, she makes stuff. The recent adventures being a series of local houses painted on woodblocks. Secretly, she would like to make wildly inappropriate disfunctial clothing while in reality she threads new elastic into the pajama pants for 3 children and a Japanese husband,
