Word Vancouver 2016 , Sept 25. Carnegie Newsletter and Carnegie library Table.

On display We celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Carnegie Newsletter. Lisa made special buttons to sell at our Table. My favourite was the yellow button highlighting Paul Taylor's signature orange cap! Paul, our Newsletter editor was also there to answer questions about our newsletter.

The 30th anniversary edition of the Newsletter was displayed and given out to people who dropped by to chat at our table. Publications on DTES issues, anthologies by OTES authors and OTES themed CDs were also displayed and sold.

Complementing the Community-Activism spirit of our Carnegie Newsletter, the library displayed a series of books, "Righting Canada's Wrongs." This series uses historical photographs and documentations to tell young readers about 1). Residential Schools' devastation of First Nations peoples; 2). The head tax on Chinese Canadians 3). Japanese-Canadian internment in WWII 4). Italian-Canadian internment in WWII and .• 5). Discrimination against The Komagata Maru migrants from India. Visitors who were teachers or social activists took an interest in these books. ,\ Interactions at the Table: 276 people stopped and chatted with us at our table.

Near to the colourful cover of the 30th Anniversary edition of the newsletter, we displayed a large magnetic puzzle map of the world. We added a photo of our iconic green-domed Carnegie Centre onto the magnetic puzzle piece which represented Canada.

When children and curious adults approached the World map, we would ask them ifthey recognized our building on th Canada piece of the puzzle. This led to conversations about our community centre, the newsletter and our services.

Many people know our building but did not know that we are the community centre for the DTES with many services offered.

We asked people where they were from and most would enthusiastically point to the piece of the magnetic puzzle that represented their country of origin.

Countries pointed-to included: Australia (nice, large, magnetic piece of puzzle), Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Ecuador, England, Fiji, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Scot-

land, Taiwan, Thailand, Uruguay, USA ... A womanS from Ireland ~uggested we separate it from the England puzzle piece, She offered to cut the piece. We declined the offer. :'isitors were invited to Write a word which starts wI~hthe letter W into our 30th Anniversary, World Wide Web of Words' Celebration of the letter "w" Compendium. 90 people wrote down a "W" wor.d M any also told us why they liked the word. Those who chose a non-English word gave translations.

Other W words chosen: Wacky, waffle, wallaby, wal~ nuts, walrus, warthog, washing machine wherefore ~hippet, wicked, wildebeest, William Prince Wilham Was visiting), Will-O- Wisp, windchimes windmill, wine, winnow, winsome, wistfulness, witch, woo hoo, wombat, wonderland, worth, wow, wunderbar. ..

Some Non-English entries: Wanawake = woman (Swahili).

Warak = paper (Arabic) Wildwasser = wild water, (German) Wroc = come back (Polish) Women = we, us (Mandarin Chinese) !n the end, the most popular W word came down to a tre, Water and Wonderful, Wisdom was a close second.

Thirty-five years.ago, if the police arrested you 3 times you wee automatically sent in jail for a year.

The Police got my friend so I went to the police station to see him. He was depressed & anxious so I said I would go to see a lawyer. I went to the Ford Building - Harry Rankin was working there. He had a very beautiful office with Native artwork all around.

Mr. Rankin gave me the name of a lawyer so I went to talk to him about my friend. I asked about the fee I and he said "$5 half now, half later."

The courtroom was packed the day of the case (my friend had many friends). The case took a long time and we won! It also set a precedent against the oneyear jail sentence. My friend was released. He was very happy!

The next day we both went to the lawyer's office to pay him $25. The office wasn't there. There was just a Learn more about how to use: wall. Lawyers who worked there never even saw him.

for relatives of people who committed suicide and one woman her daughter whose photo she passed around at every meeting beautiful young woman had a good job drove home from work one afternoon her mother didn't hear her pull into the garage and her daughter attached a hose to the exhaust pipe and gassed herself another woman whose husband shot himself dead still calls her in-laws still tries to visit them like nothing has changed and gets hurt and upset because they treat her coldly and really don't want anything to do with her but hell i started going to these meetings because my life was mostly a life of suicide my father killed himself my mother made an all out effort my aunt shot my grandmother in the heart then turned the gun on herself the boy i was closest to when i was a child murdered himself the valedictorian of my high school class killed himself

can you believe it? if you haven't had a lot of suicides in your life you can thank me and my family and friends for shouldering more than our share of the suicide burden it's like in some families being a lawyer is a family tradition and in my family trying to kill yourself is passed along in canada where i live aboriginal people have the highest rate of suicide in the world and young males 19 to 24 years old have a suicide rate 60 times higher than their peers in the united states never mind canadian teenagers who have the Sdhighest suicide rate in the world

they'd be talking about how it is when somebody just up & kills themselves you got no chance to talk to them about anything you don't know shit and it's a cruel thing to be on the receiving end because basically suicide says none of you matter enough 10 me for me to take one more breath and for myself who always wanted to murder a whole bunch a people because i didn't really like anybody there was no way i could succeed with my vast ambition besides if you kill somebody you're saying that person mattered enough to you to single them out to make them important and that wasn't nasty enough for me Qui with suicide you can in a symbolic but real manner kill everybody in the world god the universe everything all at once

and the people in this support group fixed their identity on the fact that someone so intimate killed themselves the woman whose daughter did herself in said she still listens everyday for her daughter's car to pull into the garage so she can replay the situation and save her daughter's life and the other woman whose husband shot himself wants forgiveness from blame from her husband's family but the weirdest thing for me personally was that every so often since the others in the group knew i tried to whack myself

on the other hand the desire to kill yourself can be perceived as a fierce longing for fundamental change because your life the way you've been living it is a dead end shit mess and hopelessly fucked but this desire for an entirely new orientation gets literalized and we take it to mean i gotta kill all of myself

to 'make such a profound transformation but when i was 35 i rocketed a little fuckin suburu 70 miles an hour down the expressway' at 4 in the morning . knowing i was gonna drive it right into a wall and they'd keep asking me that question and believing like maybe i'd change my answer there was no way in the world because what they wanted to be told I'd survive a crash like that of course i guzzled pills and whiskey beforehand is that their loved one to fuel the decision i'd reached was thinking loving thoughts of them to say finis to this mutherfuckin misery at that last moment and in fact rationalized but i said to them that i was performing a noble act i only know what i was thinking and ridding the world i don't feel that alone authorizes me of a selfcentered worthless asshole to be a spokesperson a world overloaded for all suicides with guys like me what i thought so i cranked up the radio depended on how old i was turned out the headlights and what was going on sang at the top of rryvoice "at 5 years old tears poured down my face , hurled myself backwards and i said out loud off a porch okay god you prick and cracked my skull open here i come against a thick stone slab ready or not lost in hopeless violent realities let's see how you handle this one with vague fantasies and i felt the intoxicating power j of joining my father of controlling death somewhere in suicide heaven and have concluded and talk about that suicide is also taboo subjects paradoxically children killing themselves an attempt to defeat the concealed fear is definitely one of them-e of death so i rammed that car right into a wall and when i was 15 my last thought was i lived in a black hole of depressed horror irn dead i hoarded a couple hundred aspirins and was i ever pissed off and threw them down my throat when i came to in emergency wanting to blast a surgeon bending over me my life of death picking glass outta my face into a death where real life could begin but i have met people who are extremely grateful they didn't die when trying to destroy themselves in one fell swoop like this young guy who jumped out of a 6th storey window but the people in this support group they'd start wondering they'd look at 'me and say what do people think about before they kill themselves?

onto the street crushing his heels and sending him into a wheelchair permanently but not me i was in disbelief i was also in more shit than the shit that caused me to kill myself in the first place let alone how fucked up i was physically even though my life is much different now and even though i want to live i sometimes say to god okay you saved me despite myself and life is something altogether other than i believed it was like excruciatingly beautiful and alive and life is and other people are absulutelyamazing and all that shit â&#x20AC;˘ but still i could pass on anymore of it i'rn ready to go any time ~ and then i go into that grind with god about why it is god lets all.these wonderful people young people children people who are creative loving kind get wiped out mercilessly and then people like me who for decades forchrissake just want out and act like shitheads for the most part aggravating and upsetting other people keep getting saved over and over again but who can answer that one? the cia? the social planning department? geraldo?

but what could i tell these people in the support group?

sure you feel guilty because your husband. or your mother or your lover killed themselves well it was all your fault you should feel guilty if only you'd done this instead of that or if you were a better person and remember that time when you said no or fuck you or wished they were dead? and you actually feel mad as fucking hell at them but how can you? the poor bastards and you thought you knew them thought they revealed themselves to you but the various reactions to suicide remind me of the first day of last spring friday night yellow police tape and cruisers blocking main street between hastings and cordova a crowd gathered on the sidewalk looking toward the top of a newly constructed building there's someone going to jump somebody is perched half over the edge it's a long drop to the street ambulances are parked nearby red and white lights revolving and 3 quick successive reactions from individuals in the crowd â&#x20AC;˘

a white guy with a shaved head and bristling with violent energy yells jump I jump' jump' a native woman with long black hair screams up at the building you fuckin idiotl And a smalllatino man says j have a rock for you if you come down and the forlorn lonely figure atop the building turns out on closer inspection not to be a human being at all but a construction pulley rig or after a suicide you'll hear the neighbour say the eo-worker say the friend the spouse the partner say why last time i saw that mutherfucker an hour ago yesterday on the weekend he-or she was smiling and happier than i'd seen them in a long time i had no idea this was coming i'rn shocked and i wanna scream of course they were happy! they were finally really happy! the night i creamed that car all day long i was more thoughtful considerate wittier than i'd ever been because i knew

like other suicides knew they're gonna be gone ain't gonna have to put up with this shit much longer ain't gonna have to put up with you or him or her or government conspiracies and bills and bullshit what a relief and why would you ever tell anybody you were gonna do it? they might try to stop you fuck up the one time in your life you really had something to look forward to but the support group members would still ask me what do they think about before they kill themselves and i wanna say to them yeah sure they think about you nght at the fuckin end my father for hours in his jail cell tearing his sport coat into strips smoking cigarette after cigarette knotting the strips together fitting them through the holes in the panels in the ceiling of the cell and what was he thinking about during his preparations? my mother? me? sure but whatever he thought specifically wasn't worth his while to stay alive for us and I believed there must be-something terribly wrong with me or my father wouldn't have killed himself would he?

shame and rage saturate your soul like cold rain that never stops but i don't want to play the suicide card anymore that cold card always up my sleeve when you know how far death is and you've gone that far and some grief comes up beween 2 people and you play that card you tell someone there's nothing you can do or say because i am willing to take it all the way and place an impregnable barrier between yourself and all else

so that you can be sitting there years later watching a movie absorbed in scenes taking place in euthanasia clinics where your hunger is satiated your nerves tranquilized your misery made peaceful before you die and turning to each other laugh and say you wish you could check into a clinic first thing in the morning

to work things out open up a little more and go like fucking hell full tiit into life like driving your heart blind like that goddamned car right through fear and right through the slow social suicide that tries to buy you with lies about anything previously inconceivable breaking free like your own life Bud Osborn

C.A.N. Citizens for Accessible Neighbourhoods www.canbc.org Citizens for Accessible Neighbourhoods project, "Sharing Our Reality" aims to increase awareness about the lives of British Columbians with disabilities as well as the challenges within our system for both clients and staff.

Our online survey is comprised of two sets of questions, the first contains a series of questions for people with disabilities, some are general to life in BC with a disability while others are specific to living on provincial disability; the second set of questions are for those working within the system about what works, what doesn't, and how our system can be improved.

This project will, hopefully, demonstrate to the media, general public and politicians that there is an immediate need for change within the system for both clients and staff. Participants have until the end of December to reply.

A report of the results will be released in January. Please consider participating & please share with your contacts.

7. We're leading up to an election in May, 2017; what would you like the parties to promise people with disabilities? What would you like their platforms to include that would affect your life?

8. The BC government announced that they want British Columbia to be the most progressive province in Canada for people with disabilities, what do you think they need to do to reach that goal?

9. Do you feel people with disabilities have a voice that is heard in BC? If not, what message would you like to be heard?

We invite you to bring mementos and photographs of your loved ones that have passed on for the altar.

The Celebration of the Dead originated with the Aztecs. they began this tradition many centuries before Europeans arrived in the Americas. Our ancestors chose the month when everything was plentiful and abundant to invite the spirits of the dead to join us for a fiesta. For them, the Celebration of the Dead was a time of happiness and pleasure because they believed that the souls of their loved ones were alive, at the time of the harvest, every November.

MOZART'S LOST OPERAS COME TO CARNEGIE ' 3 - Spm, Saturday 22 October 2016 Carnegie Theatre City Opera Vancouver presents its first comedy, THE LOST OPERAS OF MOZART. Starring Vancouver Symphony Orchestra conductor Bramwell Tovey as The Impresario, our next show offers music no one knows -- from the most famous composer of all time.

City Opera has re-constructed three operas Mozart began, but never finished. Two are Italian comedies, and the third a German romance. The music is wonderful, but no one has ever heard it - until now.

Our story takes place in a darkened theatre, where an Impresario is considering his next project. To his astonishment, the Gates of Limbo appear before him.

Out pour lost souls, ghosts, spirits who have been waiting 200 years for Mozart to finish his work. They beg the Impresario for a chance to sing, and to become who they were meant to be. The Impresario agrees ... but on one condition.

It's Kind of CREEPY~ It's kind of creepy how Hallowe'en is nothing more than a elaborate event, seducing children into playing the part of homeless beggars going from door to door asking for treats. But the trick is on them.

It's creepy when parents get their neighbours to buy candy for their kids. What a seam. Of course when I was a kid there was nothing creepy at all with eating candy or obtaining it by any means possible!

HOMELESSNESS ACTION WEEK This morning, the City's of Vancouver's annual Homelessness Action Week took on a new sinister . meaning when eight police officers and a dozen city workers dismantled and displaced the homeless camp in Oppenheimer Park. Yesterday there was over 20 tents in the park, and today by noon none were left.

One man who was being evicted said he had pneumonia and was in pain and coughing while the city workers dismantled his tent. He said Carnegie Outreach had a "viewing" at an SRO hotel for him but he was afraid to leave his stuff to go. Even ifhe did go, outreach workers said there was no guarantees he would get the room. While talking to him, city worker t pulled stuff from his tent and filled 2 garbage cans.

Having lost all his belongings, the man walked off wearing just a t-shirt and cotton shirt over it.

A nother man, Cameron, had a small tent set up and said he had been staying in the park for over 3 weeks because he had nowhere else to go. He said was supposed to have a mental health liaison worker who was supposed to help him find a place to live but she had not been in touch. Two friends were helping him fold up his tent, still not knowing where he was going.

While this was happening in Oppenheimer Park, the United Gospel Mission was having a press conference a few blocks away to release their new housing report,

"No Vacancy: Affordability and Homelessness in Vancouver." According to the report, virtually every indicator points to an increase in homelessness and housing insecurity in Metro Vancouver, both now and in coming years as a result of-structural factors, be-' yond an individual's control.

The report shows how homeless people have literally nowhere to go. The UGM turned 1,545 people away in the first nine months of 20 16, up from 1,251 during the same period last year. The hundreds of people who are turned away from shelters often have no other option then the street, but when homeless people set up tents and tarps in city parks, under bridges or any other place they can find, they are told by the police and by-law officers that they cannot stay there. When people refuse to leave because they literally have nowhere to go, the police along with city workers dismantle their tents and throwaway their belongings.

The UGM report highlights that the investment in social housing over past few years has not proportionate to the need and concludes that unless significant action is taken to address structural factors, homelessness will continue to impact a growing number of individuals and families in Vancouver.

However what is missing from the report is the role of municipal policies in exacerbating this unprecedented housing crisis by criminalizing people for being poor & homeless. Homeless people have no option but to sleep outside, but when they do, they face constant harassment and displacement by city workers.

The City of Vancouver's policy to break and displace homeless camps breaks up networks of mutual support and care, pushes homeless people into isolation and unsafe places, and taken together makes homeless people's daily struggle for survival more difficult.

Some findings of the "No Vacancy: Affordability and Homelessness in Vancouver" report: *Vacancy rates for most affordable rental units are below 1% across Metro Vancouver. *While there are 42;171 permanent subsidized housing units in Metro Vancouver and new units have been added yearly, 10,278 households remain on BC's Housing Registry, seeking suitable housing. *tween 2010 and 2015, the average rental price of bachelor units in Metro Vancouver increased by 16%. *Basic social assistance remains unchanged in 9years *The number of people housed by BC Housing Home -lessness Outreach Programs in Metro Vancouver has increased by 13% over 5 years, to 4861 people housed in 2015/16. *The number of senior applicants on BC's Housing Registry has increased 38%.

Realms of Refuge Realms of Refuge is a two week residency at InterUrban Gallery that involves artists and community participants working together to create and animate miniature worlds that explore and express different ways we find, create and imagine places of refuge, shelter and comfort. Artists include, among others: Ruth Howard, Savannah Walling, Kelty McKerracher, Bill Beauregarde, Renae Morriseau, Sharon Kallis, Russell Wallace, Rose Georgeson, Adrienne Marcus Raja and Karis Jones Pard. This residency has two components for community

members:

1. WORKSHOPS Sundays, 16 and 23 October 2016, 1:00-5:00pm. Interurban Gallery (1 East Hastings Street, Vancouver). For artists and cultural workers involved and interested in community-engaged and inter-cultural arts practices. This two-part workshop will provide a hands-on learning experience of community arts facilitation. Limited to 16 places. Participants accepted on a first-served-first-paid basis.
