Summary: Overview: 243 people chatted with us at our Table 155 participants in the Cursive Handwriting Souvenir .

Book. We call this Instantgram Publication, The Car- . negie Community Letters 2015. *Participants tried their hand at Cursive script to write their Monograms, the year of their birth and their Home Library Branch's name. * We had visiting participants from many Vancouver neighbourhoods, most of our nearby municipalities, Vancouver BC's interior, The Islands, Alberta, USA, GhentiBelgium, Maroochydore/Australia etc ... *Our cursive handwriting participants had birth years which ranged from 1940 - 2012 * The first person to visit our table was a teacher of Cursive handwriting from Salt Spring Island • A "Made in Canada" antique Boy Scout typewriter proudly held our Carnegie Newsletter. (types only in capitals ...ie. for "SOS") • Animal Letters were given to each child particl- . pant who tried cursive handwriting their initials. First letter of their first name. ( A had an alligator curled around the wood carved letter, A.) • At the "Spinning Wheel o~ - c;·t:'::1~"featuring the letters: C, A, R, N, E,G, I, E., each participant had to spin a Lucky wheel of Community - Unbeknownst to them, every letter on this wheel, which spelled out Carnegie, was a winning letter. They received a word, letters, or literary theme gift.

• Step up to the plate PLATE- participants spun the Carnegie Community wheel for a chance at a skill testing question: Can you say the word for "fish" in another language? Most participants could. Those who could not had help from a Fish Card that opened up with a word for fish in many different languages.

Everyone who participated won a "Step up to the plate" PLATE,with a blue fish draw inside of it. We' prompted participants to promise to drop by our Community centre whenever they're in our neighbourhood. (Most of them recognized us from the photo of our centre which we clipped to the top of our Cursive letters Blackboard poster). .

• Overheard one mother who said to her son, hours after their visit to our table, "Do you still have your N?" Interesting notes: • Touching to see moms and dads holding the pen, their child's hand and guiding their child to write the letters. Something many of us remember, fondly.

• Many children named "A" and "Nil. • A pair of sisters with the letters "V". After winning the Animal Letter V with a vulture on it, they made their way back to our table to ask Lisa, "how do you spell vulture?" .

.• Nobody knew what a "Wapiti" or "Nautilus" were. Great conversational ice-breakers.

• Two young men dressed in tradition robes handed us their Surrey Mosque events' brochures and participated in our Cursive handwriting Book.

Eyes lock on and into the deep winnows cf our souls until the oneness of a past life, old yet with mutual memories of distant places & familiar locations, rambunctious children playing parlour games on hands & scraped knees. How wonderful was that lazy crazy summer evening in the dying light of another childhood day.

Where did those times go except memory, like light flickering in a film. Each moment permanently recorded, then into the dustbin of history (yet in a very good way I must say!).

Days of Wine & Roses And so I moved. I moved into a nice clean air-con Hotel Room. One hour & on the bus, pressed against others. "Skytrain Out _of Order" - convenient -Not! , Many moons ago, in 1943 or 4; we took a small ship to meet my father in a town. -NewfoundJohn's.

We stayed in a boarding house & I saw luscious red grapes on the buffet - exotic during that war - even if they were packed in sawdust. Next I was resting in a small red motel chair whilst mother took tea & chatted. In the sky (ceiling) two children stared down through a grate.

I was terrified. How did they get up there? Must be angels or demons.

Back on the small ship I slept on the Mess table; Mom took an empty cabin; the sailor was on watch ..

In & Out along that treacherous coast until we arrived in the Capital of our Country. The sailor gave me a bowl of cold cereal and floating in it, larger than life, was a monster cockroach! Yuck!'

In the town my parents rented a room in another boarding house but, quell horreux, we had to move! It had some bugs so awful I forget what kind.

In our new basement flat my parents cleaned & cleaned, painting the brown linoleum with a dipped orange comb. I had a big bedroom all to myself. The baseboard was riddled with small holes which my mother stuffed with old stockings? Around the ceiling the Sandman came every evening, just before I 'fell a'wishin' - there were elves who sat on a beach digging sand ...

My parents went to nightschool or the K of C; they left me by myself 'cause it was still sunny at 8pm 'n me & my friendsd would scream & run around playing Hide & Seek. I remember VJ Day. We went to Bowring Park for a picnic, passing that Iron Cariboo.

My mother took sandwiches out of the basket & I waved a miniature Stars 'n Stripes(!) We were just gad the war was OVER. Later in Canada I encountered discrimination. The .

Canadians didn't allow their children to play with us.

My mother had to send me in a cab across to Halifax to play with my cousin Margaret. She was a body in a crib: I bit her. That shameful act has been told & retold (to my chagrin); at 74 it still haunts me.

So anyway folks .... .. .after one year in my new clean room my cockroach friends have invited their families. They run around in cereal bowls like they're in a roller derby .. they drop on my bare arms from somewhere on high .. a really big, skinnnny on even got into the fridge! The only safe place from invasion & small spiders falling is to lie pale & insignificant in my bed. . ... never have been oat 'n aboot - to catch some rays, to get a tan!

I smoke: tobacco, marijuana, bum sage & cedar, keep a kettle steaming - all on doctor's orders ...

So gentle reader, give me some advice. What is my course of action now??? Please reply clo Carnegie

He left the kitchen to lie on mY bed.

Only once At a Garden Party at Barclay Manor Be tried to dominate a pretty collie or retriever The mistress dragged her bitch away.

The moslem ladies in the lobby feared this large dog The daschunds & small terriers passed unnoticed Each got petted and treated Before long 1had to see my profiling managerA bleach-bottle blonde in tacky shoes and a hard face: 1explained my guest dog.

She accused me ofletting Sarge's master sleep in my studio apartment. 1denied the allegation but she had an Ace: 'I have recordings of your conversations," the bitch sapt out. ..

After 7 years 1sold my belongings & finally moved out. The chemicide from insect spraying made me ill.

St. Paul's saw me far too much.

1spent some time in the summer camped at the schoolyard Near a coffee shop 1was quite comfortable & made no mess 1had duvets & heavy blankets, a groundsheet & sponge mat. The air was refreshing!

1took Sarge to the Aboriginal Days at the Gallery the only dog there.

He sat dignified like a lion. The Gallery staff came to investigate .. deemed him obedient & sweet..

Mega-Taiko Performance Against the Current (the FishStix) Project for the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival!

Rehearsal Dates: Sunday, October 2S and Thursday November S Performance Date: Friday, November 6 Originally produced by Vancouver Taiko Society & Powell Street Festival Society, Against the Current will have a performance again at this year's Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival! We're adding more stories & music. We are currently reaching out to participants who made salmon props or participated in the 39th Annual Powell Street Festival performance. We are also recruiting 20 additional performers for prop-carrying at the performance.

To Participate: Participants must be able to attend one rehearsal on Sunday, October 25 afternoon, a technical rehearsal on Thursday November 5 evening and the performance on Friday, November 6 evening. No experience required. There will be an honora ium for participating performers. Aunt Rosie's Election Quiz Don't Worry, It's Multiple Choice - Just Pay Attention!

Disappearing Ice and Disappearing Information: in 2012, the volume of Arctic ice hit the lowest point ever recorded. Why did the scientists in Environment Canada not inform the Canadian public of the extent of the shrinking polar ice cap?

1. They didn't think anyone in Canada would be interested. (It was all over the news in the United States, but not here).

2. They weren't supplied with long-enough tape measures to ascertain with 100% certainty that the record was being broken.

3. They tried to hold a press conference to make the announcement (via an approval process with NINE levels of approval) only to be thwarted at the sixth level, which refused to allow them t tell the Canadian public that the Arctic is melting.

Answer: No. 3. "It's suppression through bureaucracy," said Katie Gibbs of Evidence For Democracy (E4D), an Ottawa-based non-profit pushing for open communication of government science. Although the news made headlines around the world, Environment Canada never did hold a news conference to report on this event. (Margaret Munro, Vancouver Sun, Aug. 19/14) Global warming? What global warming? And who needs to know?

But if you think that's all it takes to defeat Stephen Harper (assuming that, like most Canadians, you've had quite enough of the guy for one decade). then Think Again!

First, you have to make sure you vote: the Harper fanatics will always make it to the polling station on election day, and if you don't, they win!

You might also consider strategic voting: which antiHarper candidate has the best chance of defeating the Conservative running in your riding?

Lastly, know that Harper's attempts at vote suppression mean that the notification card from Elections Canada won't, by itself, allow you to vote in this election - you'll need to bring picture ID, or two pieces of mail with your name and current address. Access Denied: Shut Out of BC's Welfare System In recent years, the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation has made radical changes to its service delivery, making welfare much more difficult to access. Services are now mainly delivered over the phone & online. Resulting problems include long wait times on the phone lines, limits on call times once you reach a worker, a lengthy & confusing initial application that must be done online& very limited in-person office hours. In May 2015, BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre (BCPIAC) filed a large complaint with the BC Ombudsperson outlining these issues and requesting that the Ombudsperson do a system-wide investigation of the Ministry'S service delivery model.

The Ombudsperson declined BCPIAC's request, stating that these service delivery issues were best raised and addressed through individual complaints.

BCPIAC has developed a simple form to make individual complaints about welfare service delivery easier t9 do, and is now working to collect a large number to submit to the Ombudsperson all together.

face in lipstick I didn't find out till some old Woman on the bus offered me her seat that's when I saw myself in a mirror got very paranoid&sick and got off 22 stops before mine then cops pulled up & laughed and I politely told them to fuck-off, ... another time ajar of honey was poured over my comatose-like head I walked 5 miles to 18(h& Main (no exit visa) I truly wished all cops were imprisoned or just taken up a mountain & left for dead. I mean it when I say if a busload of punks would simply laugh not giving a shit cuz their society would be so much better off, just like serial killers in the USA they work 7 days a week now I would describe them as Genocide Incorporated just one of the many reasons our future looks so bleak punk rock tried to change this horrible future political scum & authority I will hate until the day I die, like asking the jury to disregard the previous 148-page tirade that'djust been drilled into their brains & minds ... died, If you ever wanted to bathe in human saliva join a punk rock band & play a few shows watch&feel the alcohol-tinged gobs slither down your face but being up on stage so anything grim (or grimmer) goes to the lead singer screaming & crawling ripping his chest open with razor blades, looking back this was a ritual most majestically sickening thing not intended to be a joke its authenticity intact along with the message being delivered at high volume through cigarette smoke believe we wanted this city & our future to be secure but every day we watched our own new dawn fade ... like a punk rock band named Scooby Jew & the Mengeles us punks were despised more than any musical trend before we may have looked like freaks but we spoke a truth no one in law or politics wanted to hear Alienation & rebelliousness were the power surging through our brains we shot things up & kicked doors down meanwhile the cops were busting us for drinking beer in a park they hated us but it was reality we began to fear, like if Featuring was to put out an album by himself instead of helping other artists he would be musical star # 1 yet if a buddy of his painted a hopscotch court over a pitch of quicksand we'd get blamed while he went out & bought our 4.5 billion year-old Sun contrary to popular belief we only harm ourselves but those cops would do their best to make us disappear tliey'd kick in the doors of the Plaza' Wank Manor'punk rock house at ih & Fraser aka the Terrible House of Sickness places came & went so many just died then heroin & other forms of death came along so many gone with so many more missing we kept going we honestly tried it was like a war with cops/skinheads/greaseballs hell wouldn't take them I guess that's why they were there/here, There is so much more to tell I could pull stories right out of my mind's eye & cross the hardcore epidemic's threshold but like a poker player with a pair of Jokers I guess he never learned how to play but sanity & no more money will make him fold --- This infinitesimal yet godlike story is pouring out of my head I need to empty it before I die, like a Los Alamos school with kids learning their ph.d's ecological seismographs . how swell this chapter has ended Read it Burn it but never forget it even when others laugh. The Whale Wall She walks into my apartment, demands coffee and a hug, like she hasn't received an embrace in a thousand years.

We stand there by the door our arms around each other for a few glorious moments ...

There is a smell of rain from this morning on her sweater And on her hair all of a sudden we are on a another planet but the crows outside interrupt us.

She takes the pile of newspapers that is on the chair by the window, and puts it on my coffee table.

She sits down, looks over the harbour: The tourists, the homeless and the seagulls ...

"I haven't seen you in ages," I say We used to play chess using ideas From novels we had each read and from noble National Geographic magazines She tells me her friends are at the bridge by the Whale Wall -a huge three-story mural of killer whales the paint shows a network of cracks from old age that follow the pattern of the bricks it's one of those paintings that has a 3-d effect: as if the brick building was an aquarium, with a water-line the whales are either in the water, floating happy, signing their ancestral songs . or showing off their shark-like fins or jumping out of th water To the right of the blue mural, there is a sort of grassy park where the young and old gather: punks, street youth, homeless, misfits and all, with their beer, guitars ana drums, trying to stop time Just like we used to do

I say, "I would like to go by the water," But then give her an excuse not to go, "I have become a hermit, comfortable in my self-imposed chaos."

Never mind, she says, and asks what I think about what I read in the newspaper these days and I say that I understand nothing ... " ... nothing at all !"

And she understands perfectly what I mean . but does not say a word.

I search, with my eyes, for a black volcanic glass stone That I could have given her to keep in her pocket To keep her sale, but also so.that she would think of me As it turns out, the stone is on the floor I pick it up, hold it, wipe the dust from it look out the window searching for her I have a good view of the Wall from here But not of all the folks that are there on the grass My eyes remain staring in that direction For a while Amongst the people there, down there Where I have decided not to go For now ...

I turn on my computer I search for info on Luna the killer whale The one that got stranded in the water near Vancouver And I learn that Native Chiefs from some native band Believe that when they die Their souls go into the bodies of killer whales With this, I am satisfied: everything is going to be O.K. THE RIGGED FEDERAL ELECTION Got the notice in my mailbox today from Elections Canada. Phoned their 800 number to see if I was on the voters list. THEY COULD NOT FIND ME! I've voted numerous times from the same residence in the DES since 2004. The polling stations have always been at Strathcona Community Centre.

On the phone I asked her where the polling station is for the federal election and she says: ~"Union Gospel

Mission" - a far-right-wing fundamentalist christian organisation. That's all I need to know that the election will be rigged.

It'll be a repeat of the stolen election in Florida that elected George W. Bush after they eliminated hundreds of thousands of Afro-American voters from the voters list.

ALL harper needs to do is recruit a couple hundred of the wacko right wing churches as polling stations, and they will rig the tallies for their right wing buddies in Ottawa.

Dear neighbours and friends, Work on the n.lca1mat et Strathcona Branch continues, and the library is beginning to take shape. The i concrete has been poured for the parking level and the ,first floor, and the second floor walls are going up. If you peer through the hoardings at 730 East Hastings, you can see the double height main library space; from the alley, you can clearly see the windows of our large multipurpose program room.
