I think not!

Recently, a number of very good and t a s t e f u l public service announcements were made regarding how not t o contract and/or spread AIDS. I have seen them and f e e l they did not promote promiscuity, but rather explained and i f anything endorsed s a f e sex - t o the already sexually active - on how not t o get AIDS. In my opinion, the Premier's r e action i s t o t a l l y unjustified.

Let's face i t ; most seventeen t o nineteen year -old young men and women a r e sexually a c t i v e whether the Premier wants t o think so o r not. I f e l t the public service

announcements were casual and innovative, especially the young women on the bike, and I can see no objection t o them.

Teenage pregnancy r e s u l t s from a lack of education in b i r t h control and a t 14,15 o r 16 how many highschool g i r l s have the maturity t o be mothers? O r want t o be!

I ' m a l s o pro-choice. 1 f e e l i f women f ind themselves pregnant 6 want a s a f e , t h e i . ~ p t i c :abortion, t h a t too is t h e i r I-ight. Neither Church o r S t a t e should be able t o i n t e r f e r e with a women's choice on abortion.

There a r e now l e s s hospitals prepared t o do theraputic abortions and t h a t ' s because hospital boards and committees have been taken over by Right t o Life!

Abortion i s lawful i n Canada only i f performed by a qualified doctor in an accredited o r approved hospital and i f it has a theraputic abortion committee of a t l e a s t three doctors. They decide i f the womon1s l i f e would be i n danger. This has been the case since 1969, when the crimina l code was m e n d e d .

The Badgley Committee on the operation of the Abortion Act 6 operation of the Law reported s e r ious inequalities i n the application of the law across Canada t o the Federal govt. in 1977.

Hospitals a r e not required t o perform abortions, and i n 1981 only 267 of 900 hospitals had these committees and were performing abortions. Hospitals t h a t do have these committees have widel y varying practices: some approve a l l requests, while others actually have quotas; some refuse most.

In 1981, over 65,000 abotions were performed i n Canada. In t h e early '70s, D r . Henry Morgentaler was charged and convicted i n Mont r e a l f o r performing abortions i n h i s medical c l i n i c . He was aquitted by two j u r i e s ; however, the Court of Appeal upheld the Supreme Court of Canada i n 1975 t o reverse the a q u i t t a l and send Dr. Morgent a l e r t o j a i l . Yet he continues t o f i g h t f o r women's r i g h t s t o have safe abortions outside hospitals!

Since then, h e ' s operated h i s Mont r e a l Clinic and the government of Quebec has seen f i t t o bring no more charges.

In Toronto "The Women ' s Bookstore" was f i r e bombed and public is t h a t Right t o Life was responsible. (Dr. Morgenthaler's c l i n i c was u p s t a i r s on the second f l o o r ) . He also has a c l i n i c in Winnipeg.

In 1983 both the Toronto and idimipeg c l i n i c s were raided and D r . Morgentaler, along with Dr. Leslie Smalling, the nurses and councillors were also charged. Neither provincial government chose t o approve the f a c i l i t i e s .

In 1981 the Supreme Court gave one antiabortion a c t i u i s t permission t o seek t o establish, under the Charter of Rights and freedoms, a guarantee t o a f e t u s - Right t o Life.

Thank heavens two women's groups supporting "Women's Reproductive Rights" launched action arguing t h a t the abortion law v i o l a t e s the Chart e r because it denies women the r i g h t t o l i f e , l i b e r t y 6 security In my mind, there a r e no issues The AIDS public service announcements a r e i n good t a s t e and done such a wayto make an impact. The manner in-which they1re' done does not promote teenage sex but deals with those already sexually active.

Re: The Abortion issue; I an1 d e f i n i t e l y Pro-choice. I f e e l every woman i n Canada has the r i g h t t o decide t o have children o r not!

I a l s o find Dr. Iknry Morgentaler a man before h i s time - making Canadian Law archaic.

As f o r the Premier; I find him very unobjective t o both issues. I can only assume he is - i f not o f f i c i a l l y - a member of "Right t o Life" as he shares t h e same narrow ideas!

The o n c e summery g r e e n g r a s s was c o v e r e d w i t h s p a r k l i n g s t a r s and t h e f e e l i n g o f a s i l l y t h o u g h t e n t e r e d my mind - i f o n l y t h e y w e r e diamonds! A s u d d e n c h i l l r u s h e d upon my s p i n e and t h e s n a p awakened me t o t h e r e a l i t y o f where I s t o o d .

A c o l d and l o n e l y n i g h t , a s t h e s h a k e s o f my body made me a w a r e o f t h e h u n g e r o f my stomach s i l e n t l y c r y i n g f o r some h o t f o o d . Walking a l o n e , w o n d e r i n g what I am d o i n g stalking the streets* alone.

The t h o u g h t o f a warm f i r e p l a c e was a g r e a t d e s i r e , g i v i n g me a s u d d e n r u s h o f warmth, b u t t h a t was o n l y d r e a ming - a l i e t o m y s l e f wondering i f t h a t morning l i g h t w i l l a p p e a r anymore.

The Successful Gardener Strathcona Gardens i s located on Prior S t r e e t between the Fireh a l l and Strathcona Park. I t was a large, unused waste area t h a t has now been turned i n t o a green area dotted with garden p l o t s .

A small toolshed has been b u i l t with recycled lumber from a nearby house t h a t was recently torn down. The shed s t o r e s shovels, hoses, wheelbarrows and l e f t over seeds. Tools, equipment, seeds, e t c . , a r e shared around

among garden members.

To join the gardens, it costs $10 per year and $5 - each plot.

Some people have only 1 p l o t , others have more. If the cost is a problem, then it can be paid off i n monthly payments.

Was t h i s man criminally prosecuted?

No. Did he have t o pay back t h e money? No. He was merely f i r e d .

Who voted on t h e Man of t h e Year is public infonnat ion, but I wonder how many of t h e corporations and ~ r g ~ m i z a t i o nasr e even wheelchair accessible.

P a t t i s o n was up f o r an honourary degree and t h e r e was so much prot e s t on canpus - because of h i s d i s t r i b u t ion of pornography through Mainland blagazines - a number of u n i v e r s i t y o f f i c i a l s resigned.

In t h e 1:raser Commission r e p o r t on Pornography, women i n t h e N.W.1'. and t h e Arctic want h i s books stopped a t t h e northern B.C. border. These various groups f e e l t h a t not only is t h i s v i o l e n t and degrading t o women, but r a c i s t a s well.

I s t h i s t h e kind of man who whould be B C ' s Man of t h e Year? I think not!

There i s no doubt i n my mind t h a t t h e honour should have gone t o t h e man who t r u l y deserves it - Rick Hansen. I am personally hoping t h a t t h e R t . Ilon. Governor General gives Rick The Order of Canada. Not t h a t t o receive awards was why Rick ever went around t h e world - devoted two years of h i s l i f e t o show t h a t maybe being handicapped i s a s t a t e of mind - t o encourage a l l wheelc h a i r people by example t o Never Give Up; t o do things for then~selves and not t o accept i n s t i t u t i o n a l i z a t i o n .

Undoubt ed l y , he i m p i r e d every person who watched t h e legacy. 'l'he sad irony is t h a t Rick I h i s e n is from BC , l e f t from BC, and two years l a t e r having gone around the world, r e t u r n s t o BC.

I f t h e r e was ever a man more cleserving of t h e Man of t h e Year Tor B r i t i s h Columbia, I c e r t a i n l y don't know \410.

Finally, between meetings, Cindy walked i n and smiled and said.

"Let's go, again." I had phoned e a r l i e r in the morning and asked i f she had 10 minutes a t a l l f r e e t o help with an interview about her f i v e years here. (Besides a l l her d a i l y work and r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s she has t o t r a i n and o r i e n t a t e replacements u n t i l a person is hired f u l l - t i m e . ) I was l a t e and another meeting was beginning r i g h t away, so we made a second appointrnent..and a good thing, too a s ten ,~iinut,tesis hardly enough, In these ' ve years, Cindy has noted t h e steady increase of younger people coming here, a s well a s ex-mental p a t i e n t s becoming regular users.

She has worked on developing many aspects of Education - espe c i a l l y on the i n t r i c a c i e s of running meetings and helping us learn t o co-operate. 'I'hc Learning

Centre has g r o w from the stage of being hit-or-miss t o being 'an established p a r t of t h e Centre, and being liason with t h e Board and i t s committees has been a r e a l learning experience.

An i n t e r e s t i n g note t h a t many a r e not aware o f ; the f i r s t phone c a l l from the Port of Vancouver came t o Cindy and they asked i f anyone here would be interested i n a publ i c meeting on t h e development plan they had f o r the waterfront.

Cindy laughed and said, "You're darn r i g h t we would be!" She took almost a week t o get f l y e r s and signs up a l l over t h e community and organised the f i r s t meeting i n the f i r s t - f l o o r lounge.
