CARNEGIE COMMUNITY CENTRE h a s had a p e r s i s t e n t worry l a i d t o rest. I n 1987, C i t y Council appointed a p a n e l t o review t h e i n t e r n a l s t r i f e t h a t had l e d t h e C i t y of Vancouver t o suspend i t s working r e l a t i o n s h i p w i t h t h e Carnegie Association. The Board of D i r e c t o r s was s p l i t down t h e middle and rumoured d e a t h t h r e a t s f u r t h e r d i r t i e d t h e i d e o l o g i c a l war being waged. The v a s t m a j o r i t y of u s e r s had r a l l i e d and f i n a l l y e x p e l l ed t h e small c l i q u e t h a t was running our C e n t r e ' s nsme i n t o t h e ground. The Review Panel came i n s h o r t l y a f t e r t h e v i c t o r s assumed o f f i c e . Most of t h e community had come t o regard t h e A s s o c i a t i o n a s a bad joke but ohe q u e s t i o n of a u s p i c e s was s t i l l unanswered. Carnegie i s under the auspices - t h a t ' s administrative
i n g t h e e n t i r e a d m i n i s t r a t i v e appara t u s , t h e a u s p i c e s , t o Parks Board. For almost two y e a r s , t h i s q u e s t i o n went unanswered. Parks Board runs a l l community c e n t r e s except o u r s & a l l t h a t stopped t h e t r a n s f e r t o Parks was t h e i s s u e of F e d e r a l CAP funding. BUT: I n a r e p o r t t o Council, t h e D i r e c t o r of S.P., Max Beck, supported h i s department's r e t e n t i o n of Carneg i e and a t a r e c e n t meeting of t h e Parks Board t h e e n t i r e body voted i n favour of our Centre remaining under S o c i a l Planning. I t ' s UNANIMOUS!
