"WORK FOR WAGES/WHEN DO WE EAT?"
I n 1902, Carnegie began w i t h a $50,000 d o n a t i o n . The basement housed a b o o k b i n d e r , t h e L i b r a r y had t h e 1 s t and 2nd f l o o r s and a museum was on t h e t h i r d f l o o r . I n 1933 i t was c l o s e d due t o budget c u t s , b u t r e opened a f t e r a 5~ r a i s e i n t h e 1934 budget. I n 1935, t h e o c c u p a t i o n took p l a c e i n t h e 3 r d f l o o r museum. No damage was done, and food was h a u l e d t h r o u g h t h e window (now t h e L e a r n i n g C e n t r e ) . The grub - baloney sandwiches and c o f f e e ! To meet t h i s c r i s i s of unconsumption, Mayor Gerry '"eraldine" ( R i o t Act) McGreer c a l l e d t h e cops and vowed t o "CONDEMNED TO STARVE/COMPELLEDTO ACT" Hold t h e F o r t a g a i n s t t h e "Crazy and Lazy" r e n e g a d e s . The men wanted work And ACT t h e y d i d . The men were and food - Change w i t h o u t Force - b u t o r g a n i z e d i n t o d i v i s i o n s and many McGreer r e a d them t h e R i o t Act. g r o u p s , such a s t h e Workers Unity J e r r y W i n t e r s , one of t h e l e a d e r s , League and t h e Workers R e l i e f Camp h a s b e e a honoured a t t h e newest a s p e c t Union d i d what t h e y c o u l d . I n A p r i l of S o c i a l Housing i n B.C. - t h e b u i l d a l i s t of demands w a s p r e s e n t e d t o i n g t h a t housed t h e mayor's o f f i c e i r i o f f i c i a l d o m . The camps, s e t up f o r s i n g l e , employable men were u s u a l l y l o c a t e d i n i s o l a t e d a r e a s and t h e work w a s g e n e r a l l y m e a n i n g l e s s .
