In Toronto I attended the Canada Day celebrations which featured f r e e food, music of a l l types and a huge fireworks extravaganza. I even had

a short conversation with a pomographic f i l m s t a r , but the great delight, the t r u l y marvelous happening, was the wonderful machine i n the West Edmonton Mall.

Dear Editor, LETTERS I q very angry over the murder of Carol Davis. Even though Carol was a p r o s t i t u t e , she was a woman and a human being. I am proud t o say t h a t Carol was my good friend f o r 5 years.

She was one of the most supportive and understanding people I ever had the privilege of knowing. Now, she is j u s t another s t a t i s t i c i n the ever growning "unsolved murder file". The S t a t i s t i c s of crimes against working women a r e never accurate because of lack of police involvement. The w ~ r k ing women t r y and report crimes and a r e t o l d by police t o forget i t .

Every day there i s violence against women on the s t r e e t s of Vancouver; not j u s t simple a s s a u l t s , but Rape, Stabbings and MURDER. In the past 1 4 years I have l o s t a l o t of good friends from the s t r e e t s t o violent crimes. In two cases of murder of p r o s t i t u t e s , t h e men were sentenced t o only 3 years. They were e l i g i b l e f o r parole i n 1 year and both men a r e now back on the s t r e e t . These men were allowed t o take a l i f e and g e t away with it, thanks t o t h e j u s t i c e system.

In t h e past 5 years, there have been 1 2 unsolved murders t h a t I know of i n the lower mainland. Ten of these women were my friends.

I have a few things t h a t I would l i k e t o say t o some people: To the bloralistic People who have made my friends criminals "tiow do you s l e e p a t night?"

I t a l l s t a r t e d a t 6:30 i n the morning on June 29 - a Monday.

Bonnie, a friend of mine, and two police o f f i c e r s arrived a t my brot h e r ' s house. Then they informed usthat there had been a f i r e a t 1729 Franklin S t . , next door t o where I live. I t had s t a r t e d a t 3:OO a.m. and they weren't sure i f they'd be able t o save the building. Bonnie had only her housecoat, nightgown and a teddy bear named Cuddles.

Steven and myself spent the b e t t e r p a r t of Monday morning getting c l o thing and s h e l t e r f o r Bonnie, plus trying t o contact my Financial a i d worker - of course on holiday u n t i l llursday, Steven s a i d t h a t I could stay with them u n t i l everything was s e t t l e d with the Fire.

I got home t h a t night ( t o Steve's place) and Steve, 1)ave and myself were s i t t i n g around talking about things. Denise and Jeanine were asleep. I went t o use the washroo~n, flushed i t , and the water pipe burst!

We spent the next l i t t l e while t r y ing t o s t o p the water- from spreading,

packing f o r wherever we would end up staying and trying t o get hold of the landlord.

W e called Emergency Services and they put Steve and h i s family i n t o the Austin Motor Hotel. They put me i n t o an emergency t r a n s i t i o n s h e l t e r .

I find t h a t it is very s t r e s s f u l f o r a person t o be homeless, even f o r a few days. I have been i n t h i s s h e l t e r f o r almost a week and it i s hard f o r me, a s I'm used t o having privacy. What gets me is t h a t we w i l l not be compensated f o r what we l o s t i n t h a t fire..due t o smoke and water damage. A fund has been s e t up f o r the victims - in t h e building t h a t burned - but what about 'other' victims, who had t o be placed i n hotels, s h e l t e r s , o r s t a y with friends?

We should be compensated f o r damages a s nost of us have t o s t a r t a l l over again.

I hope t h a t t h e person who s t a r t e d the f i r e , even though it was an accident, w i l l remember f o r a long time about the people who l o s t everything . . t h e i r dreams, t h e i r hopes and t h e i r memories ...

On the 26th and 27th of June, I attended two dances a t the Vancouve Indian Centre with music by none other than (good 01') Count on Country. That is the band t h a t played for the people here for Over two years.

They done up two dances, back t o back9 and done henuva good job I was there both nights and re?ii1 enjoyed the entertainment. On the 26th it was slow because CRAB had a dance t h a t night too, but on Saturday night it was something else.

There were between f i v e and s i x hundred people there f o r the gradu a t i o n dance and a l l were ready t o wear t h e i r shoes out. Count on Country supplied only the best type of music, and when it s t a r t e d , it was ' s i t t i n g room only1 because with everyone on the f l o o r , there was no place t o stand.

Halfway through the night, some of the yolnger people wanted Rock 6 Roll. Count on Country, being a v e r s a t i l e band, switched over and

AS some of you may know, the band has changed some members and is now all-native - Rich on lead and Scotty on drums.

The Staff and Volunteers 'there were just t o watch, They have a very good thing going and a r e pr~u3,of it. They a l l seem t o know what has t o be done befcrehand, and someone was always there t o do it.

The security was very good and had t o remove only two people a l l night.

Everyone e l s e didn't want t o miss anything and j u s t behaved. Staff catered t o the band and were there whenever needed.

Free coffee, t e a and a variety of j u E were available t o those who didn't use alcohol.

As a Board member of Carnegie, I realized the importance of v i s i t i n g other Centres on a regular basis.

So a big thank you goes t o Count on Country and another t o the Vancouver Indian Centre as you both made a r e a l night of pleasure f o r me, David W. Todd

dazzling deals The money s i t u a t i o n f o r most of us i s n ' t too rosy, and paying b i l l s can be a nightmare. My job a s Treasurer is t o do t h a t f o r the Carnegie Assoc i a t i o n , f o r a l l of us.

On April 23rd, I began adding and companies s t a r t e d phoning up about money owed t o them. Over $23,000 for s t u f f a s f a r back as 1984 , but now the biggest b i l l - the one f o r auditing i n 1985 and finance work i n 1986 - is making f o r concern. I ' l l t r y t o keep away from pennies and use round numbers. I f reading about money is hard, j u s t go slow.

F i r s t , the necessity of Audits: Carnegie Ass'n is a 'Charitable Organization' and the federal government gives us a tax-exemption number.

We don1t have t o pay federal taxes, but t o avoid scams, the feds want a report every year on what we've made and spent and on what. Their deadl i n e is June of t h i s year f o r l a s t year, and what they want by t h i s month is an audit f o r 19136. t gett i n g a l l t h i s s t u f f means they can wit6draw our tax-exempt s t a t u s . I f t h a t happens, then no p a r t of t h e Association - Seniors, Volunteers, Pool Room, Learning Centre. .. -

n even apply for any grants. I f the feds don't recognize a group, then neither can the Society's Act people i n Victoria.

To make a long s t o r y s h o r t , S t a r Bingo has become our major source of income, but t h e t a x r e t u r n f o r Revenue Canada is overdue now. Paying o f f a l l t h e b i l l s smaller than t h e a u d i t has used about $8600 of t h i s money.

Gitksan Wet'suwet'en chiefs argue the continuity of their economic and cultural life, including their traditional fisheries, proves I their title to their territory.

B.C. - On the chilly, gray morning of May 11, 26 Gitksan and Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs gathered outside the courthouse of this small town 700 kms. north of Vancouver dressed in the formal regalia of the feast. In speeches. Bong and prayers, they spoke of the courage needed to fight the battle ahead.

Inside, under the fluorescent lights of a newly refurbished, , red-carpeted courtroom, 12 blackrobed lawyers, armed with stacks of briefing books and documents, prepared to argue the case expected to become a landmark in the field of aboriginal title claims.

The contrast between those opening-day scenes foreshadowed what was to follow. Now, a s the first phase of t h e GitksanWet'suwet'en land claims trial draws to a close in B.C. Supreme Court here, it is obvious the case will test not only the claim itself but also the judicial system's ability to accommodate cultures and traditions alien to its own.

Much is a t stake. The 54 hereditary chiefs bringing the action against the British Columbia and federal governments claim ownership of 57,000 sq. kms. of northwestern B.C., an area about the size of Nova Scotia.

If Chief Justice Allan McEachern, who is hearing the case, decides in their favor, the chiefs will ask him to declare: Their ownership includes the right to harvest, manarre and consehe the land and natural resources within the claim area, Their right to jurisdiction includes the right to govern the territory, themselves and their Houses (extended families) according to their own laws.

Their ownership and jurisdictional rights include the right to conditionally ratify or refuse to ratify land titles or grants issued by the province after Oct. 22,1984, and licenses, leases and permits issued by the province a t anytime without their consent. ( I n their statement of claim.

No grant money f o r t h e Learning Centre w i l l be possi b l e and, worst of a l l , t h e Bingo w i l l c l o s e down s i n c e we won't have a c h a r i t y ' s 1icence anymore. Kids ' programs w i l l have no money from Carnegie and every support group w i l l have t o have a business l i c e n c e t o run a concession.

Not only is the usage of such type of herbicide a danger t o public health, but it a l s o requires a period of 7 t o 1 4 days t o dissipate.
