I a t t e n d e d t h e Board meeting on J a n . 8 , and am becoming v e r y awa r e of what i s happening b o t h b e f o r e and behind a c t i o n s a t t h e meeting p r o p e r .

Muggs S i g u r g e i r s o n , a p p o i n t e d t o t h e Board and immediately made P r e s i d e n t a few months ago soon showed by h e r independent t h o u g h t , n o t t a k i n g a known ' s i d e ' c;n issije; t 1 t ; r t if was n e c e s s a r y t o remove h e r . .

When f i r s t a p p o i n t e d , t h e p o i n t of being,a member f o r s i x t y days was n e v e r brought up i n t h e h o u r - a n d - a - h a l f d e b a t e bef o r e s h e was p u t on t h e Board.

Her energy w a s n ' t conducive t o t h e ' p a r t y l i n e ' o f a block o f members on t h e Board s o t h i s t e c h n i c a l i t y became t h e o n l y way t o s t o p h e r p a r t i c i p a t i o n .

I r e n e Schmidt a l s o came under t h e gun, b u t h e r l o n g - s t a n d i n g a c t i v i t y and low p r o f i l e saved h e r from t h e m a c h i n a t i o n s of t h i s party.

Muggs, a s s u r e d v e r b a l l y t h a t t h e r e was n o t h i n g p e r s o n a l i n the actions taken against h e r , r e s i g n e d and w a i t e d f o r J a n . 8 .

She was t o l d t h a t s h e would t h e n be nominated and r e t u r n e d t o 1 continue i n a lllegalll capacity.

However, a t t h i s meeting, Tony Seaver nominated someone e l s e and t h e v o t i n g was s p l i t a t ,6-6 on a l l motions t o g i v e t h e members p r e s e n t a s a y . We need p e o p l e on o u r Board who w i l l work f o r t h e b e t t e r ment o f C a r n e g i e , and n o t j u s t t o f u r t h e r t h e p e r s o n a l ambit i o n s of a b i a s e d few.

One woman i n p a r t i c u l a r f e l t t h a t h e r son should be S a n t a t s h e l p e r . I t took some time t o g e t t h e p r o blem s t r a i g h t e n e d o u t a s i t t u r n e d o u t t h a t Amanda was given t h e p a r t of being S a n t a t s h e l p e r ; consequently t h e p a r t y went o f f w i t h a bang - s p e c i a l thanks t o Linda Kenny and J a c k i e Smith a l o n g w i t h a l l t h e o t h e r a d u l t s who v o l u n t e e r e d t h e i r time and p a t i e n c e f o r t h e k i d s t Xmas p a r t y . This was t h e o n l y p a r t of t h e h o l i d a y t h a t I enjoyed.

I f t h e a d u l t s would s t o p and t a k e a l e s s o n from t h e k i d s : t h e k i d s were h e r e t o e n j o y themselves, n o t t o c r e a t e c o n f u s i o n amongst each o t h e r .

That i s what I saw a d u l t s doing constantly during t h i s holiday season a t t h e Centre.

The c s n c e r t music f e r t h e f e s t i v e s e a s o n was horrendous, e x c e p t f o r one l o n e g u i t a r p l a y e r i n t h e t r i o . The female vocalist couldn't really sing a note, versus a defunct g u i t a r p l a y e r who was o f f key a l l n i g h t long. The o n l y good musician up on sta,ge was h e l d back, because he had t o be back-up f o r t h e o t h e r two. I n o t i c e d p e o p l e l e a v i n g , some going home t o a two-by-four room t o s t a r e a t f o u r w a l l s , w h i l e o t h e r s would l e a v e t o walk around i n t h e c o l d well,

There was an a t t e m p t t o t r y and dance, because t h e good g u i t a r p l a y e r had done a few rock t u n e s t h a t I had r e q u e s t e d .

The p l a c e t u r n e d i n t o a r e a l f l o p . Another p l a y e r s i n g e r wanted t o g e t i n t o t h e a c t on s t a g e and would n o t l e a v e .

I never b o t h e r e d s t a y i n g f o r t h e f r e e b r e a k f a s t - I was t o t a l l y d i s a p p o i n t e d by t h e whole a f f a i r . I went back t o my l i t t l e abode and l i s t e n e d t o some people t r y i c g t o s i n g a u l d 1an.g syne. Though t h e y never knew a l l t h e words t o t h e song, i t s t i l l was h o n e s t e n t e r t a i n m e n t a s nobody was complaining.

Again, nobody complained o r walked o u t i n a f i t of r a g e l i k e I saw happening d a i l y i n t h e Centre.

A discordant political song The Carnegie Community Centre Association Board is again operating with a full compliment of members sitting. Due to resignations of reps., only thirteen of the fifteen positions were filled.

Several motions put forward to affect 2 selection process whereby association members in the room would have a say in IIP a p p ~ i n t m ~ n tuse r e defeatc2 I 1

These motions included: 1) to have all members present vote on the nominees; 2) to have the Board vote on accepting persons nominated by the members; 3) and to have an open ballot instead of a secret one.

On each motion, the 6-6 tie was broken by the Acting President, Wally Bardysh. The final balloting was done with the process being nomination of candidates by the Board , and the casting of votes by a secret ballot. There was discussion on all of these motion and long-standing members in the audience asked for the right to aid in the selection. , This, however, was said to be allegedly unconstitutional.

The nominees for the two vacancies were Muggs Sigurg, eirson, Bill Beacon, Katherine Galan, GM McLeod and Tom Kolvisko. The new members are Katherine Galan and GM McLeod.

After coming to full strength . the next task was to elect an executive for the positions of President, Vice-president and Director-at-large. These pos-

itions are now chaired by Wally Bardysh, Tony Seaver and Jonn Olldym, respectively.

"to bake or not to bake?"

"Cookies ! ? !" drooled the Cookie Monster.

Volunteer help in the kitchen has been bitten by the bug and they've started baking very high quality chocolate chip, peanut butter and oatmeal cookies. This is good for the finances of the kitchen as baked here the cost is from 124 to 174 each and the selling price is an acceptable 354. The cookies from DEEDS, ,although equal in quality,cost 254 each wholesale. When the Association temnorari l y t u r n e d , its financial ahministration over to the City staff, until it could afford to pay its own bookkeeper,, Nancy Jennings decided in good faith to have these eager volunteers go for it and make all cookies on the premises.

At the Board meeting, however, she was accused of acting in bad faith for not putting the matter before the full Board and letting the decision be made there.

Having a little power seems to go to some peoplest heads.

In a demonstration of this, Tony Seaver cried, "It's not fair!"We should have been consulted before such a unilateral decision was made." Tora tried to put the matter back in perspective by saying that the idea was just to give those who wanted to do it a chance to exercise their skills and bake cookies..that the cooks and kitchen staff know what'works. that it was not and should not be s e e n as a n u n d e r h a n d e d a t t ack on the authority of the Board.

Had this been presented sole ly as a point of principle, then point taken. However, as the issue of unilateral decision making was being voiced by 'Tony, he started to elaborate on the selling points of the DEEDS product at the same time "Uniform quality, availability and the percentage of mark-up1' It sounded odd coming from the

Some f o r a s long a s s i x days (due t o l a c k o f a t t e n d e n c e , I g u e s s ) . Not s o a t t h e Carnegie. Open everyday, open a l l n i g h t , d i n n e r s , b r e a k f a s t , k i d s t p a r t i e s , New Y e a r ' s Eve dance, v o l u n t e e r s everywhere, d e c o r a t i o n s , music and a f a n t a s t i c S o l t i c e c e l e b r a t i o n t o b e g i n t h e whole a f f a i r and welcome t h e L i g h t .

No wonder t h a t t h e Carnegie Community C e n t r e i s r e c o g n i s e d and even e n v i e d a s t h e most dynamic and v i t a l "Living Room1' i n t h e e n t i r e lower Mainland.

Muggs S i g u r g e i r s o n a g a i n was recognised a s a g r e a t lady.

Working t o f i n d and implement p r a c t i c a l ways o f f u n d - r a i s i n g f o r t h e beleaguered finances of t h e CCCA, Muggs h a s s u c c e s s f u l l y s t a r t e d a Moonlight Madness Bingo e v e n t r u n n i n g e v e r y Monday n i g h t from 1 1 - 2 PA--nz--aL. The l i c e n c e was t r a n s f e r r e d from 401 Main S t . t o t h e new l o c a t i o n and t h e f i r s t t r y 1 n e t t e d $750.00.

This i s t h e k i n d o f weekly a f f a i r t h a t i s s o d e s p e r a t e l y needed t o h e l p form a s o l i d f o u n d a t i o n o f f A s s o c i a t i o n income.

As outlined i n previous i s s u e s o f t h e p a p e r , t h e monthly s h o r t f a l l i n operating costs had r e a c h e d a l a r m i n p r o p o r t i o n s - a s much a s 3,000 p e r month b e i n g s p e n t t o conduct t h e b u s i n e s s and s o c i a l work o f t h e membership.

That's $3000 more t h a n what was made!

A p e r s o n a l f r i e n d o f mine, J o e Boucher, had a h e a r t a t t ack on Dec.23 a t Sam Upon arriving a t the hospital, a f t e r making some t r a n s f e r s , he was told t o take a seat.. t h a t t h e r e were o t h e r s ahead o f him.

After several attempts a t waving a w r i t t e n n o t i c e from h i s D o c t o r , s a y i n g t h a t h e had a c a s e h i s t o r y of h e a r t t r o u b l e i t was n o t u n t i l a p a s s i n g n u r s e s t o p p e d and r e a d i t t h a t h i s c o n d i t i o n was r e a l i z e d a s s e r i o u s . I t was no problem aquiring treatment a f t e r t h a t and he was p u t i n t o i n t e n s i v e c a r e immediately.

My f i r s t t r i p t o t h e j u n g l e began a s a n i n n o c e n t q u e s t I met some f r i e n d s f o r work. i n Q u i t o , c a p i t a l of Equador, who had a p i g farm and n e e d e d someone t o p u t a s m a l l lumber m i l l t o g e t h e r . Why n o t ? I t was r a i n i n g i n Q u i t o and I was r u n n i n g o u t o f music g i g s s o o f f I went t o t h e j u n g l e .

The n e x t day my g u i d e (who had n e v e r been t h e r e e i t h e r ) and my s e l f s t a r t e d o u t w i t h a c r u d e , hand w r i t t e n map.

Around noon we r e a c h e d t h e d e s e r t v a l l e y below t h e c i t y b u t , a s u s u a l , t h e b u s e s were few and f a r between, s o we hitched rides with truckers.

From t h e f o o t o f t h e l a s t c h a i n o f m o u n t a i n s , we c l i m b ed s t e a d i l y u n t i l l a t e a f t e r noon and were h i g h e r t h a n Q u i t o ( 9 , 0 0 0 f t ) ; t h e tempera t u r e was j u s t above f r e e z i n g .

The v i s t a was phenomenal!

We s t a r t e d down t h e e a s t e r n

s l o p e t h r o u g h mountains cove r e d w i t h r a i n c l o u d s and r e a c h e d t h e r i v e r drawn on t h e map. We were s t i l l 3 0 0 0 f t up i n r o l l i n g h i l l s and t r e e s a s f a r a s you c o u l d s e e , t h e n rain.

I t came down i n b u c k e t s , t o r r e n t s , c a t s and dogs. The twof o o t wide t r a i l was kneedeep and mud on mud i n mud. There were a few h u t s and f e w e r peop l e , and when a s k i n g d i r e c t i o n s we were always t o l d , "No problem, j u s t down t h e t r a i l , r e a l c l o s e , man."

And how we s t r u g g l e d , o r b e t t e r y e t swam down t h e muddy s l o p e . We came t o a s i d e creek with a w a t e r f a l l barring o u r way - t h e t r a i l went i n and came o u t t h e o t h e r s i d e and t h e r i v e r was s o l o u d w e c o u l d n ' t h e a r e a c h o t h e r . On t h e e q u a t o r , t h e r e ' s no t w i l i g h t , sot-when t h e s u n goes down i t goes down! I n s t a n t black..

Conflict with harsh realities P e t e r Imm, new t r e a s u r e r f o r t h e A s s o c i a t i o n , had h i s p o s i t i o n c h a l l e n g e d by K a t h e r i n e Galan, v o l u n t e e r c l e r k / b o o k k e e p e r .

A s P e t e r t o g i v e t h e Finance r e p o r t , he was asked t o respond t o a l l e g a t i o n s o f misuse of funds and c o n s c i o u s l y a c t i n g c o n t r a r y t o e x i s t i n g Board p o l i c i e s . The Board c a l l e d f o r a " q u a s i j u d i c i a l s e s s i o n " on t h e f o l l o w i n g n i g h t .

The f i r s t p o i n t was t h e r e c e i p t by P e t e r of $ 2 . 3 0 f o r b u s f a r e which he f a i l e d t o show t r a n s f e r s f o r . He responded t h a t h e ' d f o r g e t t e n t o g e t them and t h e n r e p a i d t h e money a t t h e meeting.

The Board moved t o evoke a "mild c e n s u r e " f o r t h i s d i s c r e p a n c y .

Next was t h e m a t t e r of P e t e r h a v i n g $ 2 . 8 5 i n change from a purchase' and r e t u r n i n g o n l y t h e r e c e i p t , t h e n r e i m b u r s i n g i t o v e r a p e r i o d of t h r e e weeks. P e t e r responded t h a t t h e change was i n h i s room - Tony S e a v e r a f f i r m e d t h a t P e t e r had had t r o u b l e g e t t i n g a c c e s s "around t h a t time" - and t h e l a c k of f a c t s prompted t h e d i s m i s s a l o f t h i s p o i n t .

The t h i r d a l l e g a t i o n was a b o u t P e t e r a l l o w i n g two cheques t o go o u t w i t h o n l y two s i g n a t u r e s e a c h , i n s t e a d o f t h e t h r e e r e q u i r e d by Board p o l i c y . An example many p e o p l e b e a r w i t n e s s t o i s t h e bad f e e l i n g s and b i t t e r n e s s between Board members, and w i t n e s s of seeming h a t r e d between same: h a t r e d o f d i f f e r e n t p o l i t i c a l s i d e s and v i e w p o i n t s and a f f e c t i n g almost everyone i n a n e g a t i v e , d e m o r a l i z i n g way. Is new premier says ;elfare recipients should work twenty hours a week for their cheque - and a writer in our last newsletter expressed the opinion that "living on welfare as an integral part of your personal philosophy is only defendable in a bar where everyone listening is just as drunk as you, and deep thinking is not expected.

Well, I don't really'care what anyone says about it, because I know for a fact that every individual has the right to choose their own path in life - even if the system refuses to recognize the value of that path.

It seems to me that the major hypocrisy of capitalism is that its stated objective providing everyone with the opportunity to live the good life - is contradicted by its sbviccs ressit - destroying the environment with pollution and ending the world with nuclear war.

Paid jobs require individuals to sell their time and energy to already wealthy employ ers who use their skills to amass even more money and social power, which most of them habitually abuse. Money and making it has become an obsession..obscuring the real values of life.

unethical in a corrupt system, then unpaid voluntary work of one's own choosing may be the only real contribution that one individual can make toward a healthy, peaceful planet.

Working voluntarfly without pay accordin to one's own perception of rlght and wrong, makes it necessary to draw on welfare for basic life support.

Of course, if you refuse to do a "job search" because you're already working for nothing at something you believe in, Welfare workers will try to remove even the minimum food and shelter allowance necessary to sustain your existence They did this to me twice already..I1m not stupid..I get the message.

out pay - because if everyone was this idealistic we'd all have to live on welfare and universal socialism would be the result.
