Nancy J e n n i n g s , C e n t r e D i r e c t o r , spoke w i t h concern t h a t many of t h e r e s i d e n t s i n t h i s a r e a end up h e r e a s a p l a c e of l a s t refuge, with t h e v a s t m a j o r i t y b e i n g on a s s i s t a n c e of some k i n d . She s a i d t h a t a f t e r contributing t o society

and having a bad b r e a k , p e o p l e tend t o see f u r t h e r t r y s a s being p o i n t l e s s , even worthl e s s . Yet, t h i s community can b o a s t of numerous and d i v e r s e t a l e n t s , s k i l l s and expertise.

Nancy spoke of t h e v o l u n t e e r program h e r e expanding t o i n c l u d e t r a i n i n g f o r j o b s and activating peoples1 i n t e r e s t i n a l a r g e r world.

The gym and poolroom a r e busy w i t h a c t i v e p e o p l e . The Learning Centre i s a c t i v e w i t h t u t o r s h e l p i n g s t u d e n t s and t h e Seni o r s ' dances a r e f u n and f i l l ed w i t h happy p e o p l e . The Cabaret Night has p e o p l e c l a p p i n g and stomping t o g r e a t music. Christmas, New Y e a r ' s ; t h e r e i s always someone t o t a l k t o . The l i s t goes on and on of happy t i m e s and s o u l s .

The o n l y unhappy t i m e s f o r me a r e a t Board meetings where a s a Board member I h e a r s c r e a ming, s w e a r i n g , pounding f i s t s and g r e a t i n s u l t s . . a n i g n o r i n g cf t h e rnmmcnityls wishes a n d even p r e s e n c e i n t h e room.

The community e l e c t e d me; i t i s a h a r d job - I c a n ' t change things o r f i n d a s o l u t i o n alone.

The community who e l e c t e d me must f i n d t h e s o l u t i o n t o t h e Carnegie Board and i t s function a t present.

Dear B r o t h e r s and S i s t e r s , We a r e i n t h e m i d s t of t r y i n g t i m e s . The Carnegie Board of Directors i s a t present overwhelmingly dominated by r e a c t i o n a r i e s and o p p o r t u n i s t s .

The most o p p o r t u n i s t i c and l e a s t h a i r y member of t h e board undoubtedly i s more i n t e r e s t e d i n improving h i s r e p u t a t i o n amongst t h e r e a c t i o n a r i e s and o p p o r t u n i s t s who now dominate C i t y H a l l t h a n i n working f o r and w i t h t h e g e n e r a l membership of t h e Carnegie community Centre A s s o c i a t i o n .

This man and h i s f l u n k i e s have screamed t o t h e media t h a t t h e A s s o c i a t i o n ' s f i n a n c i a l sky was f a l l i n g w h i l e e x e r t i n g v i r t u a l l y no e f f o r t t o a c t u a l l y improve o u r f i n a n c i a l s i t u a t i o n . They have p r e v e n t e d t h e membership from t a k i n g p a r t i n t h e e l e c t i o n of d i r e c t o r s . They have j o i n e d t o g e t h e r t c e j e c t from t h e e x e c u t i v e committee one of t h e two memb e r s of t h a t committee who a r e n o t i n t h e h a b i t of p a t r o n i z i n g Ralph C a r a v e t t a l s p a s t a j o i n t .

To r i d i t s e l f of t h e s e f o l k s , t h e membership must v o t e them out a t the f i r s t possible chance and must r e f u s e t o v o t e them back i n d u r i n g t h e y e a r s t o come.

"Oh, no," you s a y ; "Hold it!" b e f o r e you l o o k away. I know; y o u ' v e h e a r d t h i s o v e r and o v e r , b u t t h e r e seems t o be a l o t o f a l a r m s t i l l . The p e n a l t i e s f o r d r i n k i n g and d r i v i n g a r e g e t t i n g moFe s e v e r e a l l t h e t i ~ e .y e t t h r r e has been v e r y l i t t l e a b o u t 'why' of t h i s event.

I won't bother t e l l i n g t h e h o r r o r s t o r i e s o r consequences a s t h e r e ' s p r o o f enough i n h o s p i t a l s , w h e e l c h a i r s and c e m e t a r i e s ; and s t i l l n o - o n e knows what t o do!

U n d e r s t a n d a b l y , no-one wants t o l e g i s l a t e o r enforce very severe p e n a l t i e s , but, f o r our own ( e v e r y b o d y ' s ) p r o t e c t i o n , some p o s i t i v e s t e p s w i l l have t o be t a k e n i n t h e p r e v e n t i o n o f d r i n k i n g and d r i v i n g .

One o f t h e b i g g e s t problems i s , of course, t h a t i n today's s o c i e t y c a r s a r e second n a t u r e .

The way o f t h i s c o u n t r y and i t s s o u t h e r n n e i g h b o u r i s t h e need f o r recklessness i n very ordina r y , d u l l l i v e s . Like t h e Robert Johnson q u o t e , " b l u e s t h a t walk l i k e a man, s o s p i t him i n t h e eye".

D r i v e r s seem t o t a k e t h e i r own l i v e s i n t h e i r own h a n d s , b u t no-one i n t h e i r r i g h t mind would i n t e n t i o n a l l y r i s k another person's l i f e : no-one would want t o h i t someone; n o - o n e wants t o be i n an a c c i d e n t - n o - o n e wants t h e

g u i l t and a n a c c i d e n t i s t h e l a s t t h i n g on a n y o n e ' s mind.

P e o p l e j u s t want t o p a r t y , n e v e r mind worry. So p e o p l e d r i n k and d r i v e anyway and " n e v e r mind t h e law".

On one h a n d , one f r i e n d was , t e l l i n g me t h a t h i s s i s t e r was s e v e r e l y i n j u r e d by a d r u n k e n d r i v e r and h i s r a p e was a b s o i u t e . . h e was t h i n E i n g i n t e r m s o f s e v e r e punishment.

into a presidency for himself and a voting majority for his political friends.

In my opinion, a closed group of power-mongering, small minded, selfish people are now using the Board's executive power to force their own right-wing, business oriented ideas on the community.

The executive committee1s voting block of Bardysh, Seaver Olldym, Bowers, Galan, MeLeod, Bowers, Allan and Kendal are literally running Carnegiels reputation into the dirt, shattering everyone they can in the process and manufacturing one crisis after another ...clearly, they are digging their own graves, politically.

In my opinion, Seaver and Martin Baker and the whole NPASocred D.E.E.D.S. American Dream connection are the guiding influence behind the scene - but I'm sure that we will be able to avoid going down with them and survive to bury them and others like them.

If you have attended any Board meetings lately, it should be clear by now who is responsible and caring and who is just manipulating for power under a smokescreen of confusion and misinformation.

Remember who your friends are when it comes time to vote for a new board in June. If the present executive retain their power, Carnegie will coninue to be poisoned by sick minds in political ways.

If the side that is with the people - acting intelligently and humanely on their behalf wins a majority, then politics can become a positive process.

The sun might come up, unexpectedly for a change, on a community centre that really deserves a break.

Throughout South America 'lies an archaelogical paradise.

Among many, I had the chance to visit one of the most impressive at Chan Chan, situated on the coast 10km from Trullijo in Peru. It's about the size of the island of Montreal and has hundreds of deteriorating pyramids that look like inverted beehives.

When the warrior tribe that later became the Incas were slowly conquering a land mass that spread from Chile to Columbia, Chan Chan was one of the last holdouts in Peru. At that time, when people died and were buried, assorted artifacts were laid out with their bodies to help them in the next life.

Archaeologists have uncovered only a fraction of these artifacts but have already filled museums all over the world.

I first came across these beads when I was in the Mercado in Otavallo, Equador; ceramic. turquoise, silver, gold and the mysterious conical quartzes.

Scientists are still disagreeing as to how the artists - who at that time, presumably, did not have the technology - drilled through natural quartz. The thing is, these stones are # 8 on the hardness scale and the diamond is # 9 ! (If you figure it out, let the world know.. you'll be the leading authority ..whols going to give you a hard time?!).

My ever-faithful companion Pamela and I set up our hammock and stayed in the coastal village near the ruins and waited for night. The authorities have ldouble standards about the beaas. If the locals are caught in possession of them, they're fined or jailed. . (the beads come under the protection of

the National Treasure Act - in short, Don't Touch). The tourists are simply ripped off and the beads are sold back to whoeyer.& Everyone uses them to sell to tourists and make a living.

Anyway, when the sun goes down, the locals go to work.

After our meal on the beach, we saw a procession of fires and lights going through the ~

they are called. were busy digking up artifacts. ~ r b u n d midnight a knock on the door came and one of the successful entrepreneurs showed us his new-found wares of the evening. We bought in bulk and spent the days making necklaces and enjoying the simple life.

After a month we had collected enough jewellry to bring to other cities and sell, 2suallv to Europeans. A neck-

lace fkom the ruins can be bought for as little as 10 or 15 dollars. In ],ima. it could b s sold for up to $40 U.S. This is just one of the ways a g;,rpsylearns how to support himself on a shoe-string budget. The people we met who were doing the same kigd of travelling always had contacts and experiences in the same l i n e 2 s b l ~ r s ~ l v e s .So we had a never ending source of peopie to see and places to go. This is what you really call "networking", a sharing of information that, when on or off the road, is invaluable: a source of communication with others and yourself.
