The human c o n d i t i o n i s t h a t s t a t e which i s n o n - s a t i s f a c t o r y t o t h o s e i n i t . More o f e v e r y t h i n g . . and h a v i n g , m o r e means w a n t i n g more - you g e t a b a s e , r a i s e your s i g h t s , a t t a i n t h a t g o a l and r a i s e y o u r s i g h t s again.

When a m i n i s c u l e number o f humans have more w e a l t h t h a n t h e y w i l l e v e r need and t h e r e s t o f humanity l i v e s i n d i r e p o v e r t y , a s b e g g a r s , what i s i t t h a t k e e p s t h e v e r y few s o s e l f i s h and g r e e d y ? ' It i s a mental d i s e a s e w i t h symptons o f g r e e d , ava r i c e , aggressive manipulation f o r p e r s o n a l e n d s , i g n o r i n g o r working directly against the best i n t e r e s t s of t h e r e s t o f humankind. The more v i r u l e n t t h e d i s e a s e , t h e more i s t h e v i c t i m of i t removed from common s e n s e , from s i m p l e manners, common c o u r t e s y and f a i r n e s s . A s t h e i r o p i n i o n o f t h e m s e l v e s and t h e i r s t o n e w a l l e d s p i r i t u a l growth grows more and more s t a t i c , t h e y e n t e r t h e c o n d i t i o n where t h e y c a n ' t h e a r t h e i r c o n s c i e n c e a t a l l . I t h i n k t h e most t e r r i b l e t h i n g f a c i n g a woman i s h a v i n g t o f a c e a n unwanted pregnancy.

A l l o f t h o s e mixed up f e e l i n g s : "Where am I g o i n g t o l i v e ? How am I g o i n g t o f e e d t h a t c h i l d ? How w i l l I b e a b l e t o c l o t h e a baby?" Mostly women l i v i n g a t t h e poverty l e v e l .

I n my e r a t h e r e was no o n e named D r . Henry M o r g a n t a l e r ; t h e r e were no b i r t h c o n t r o l p i l l s .

I had my f i r s t Ceaserean s e c t i o n , a b e a u t i f u l g i r l , i n my l a t e t e e n s . I remember my d o c t o r s a y i n g " I f t h e woman had t h e f i r s t baby and t h e man had t h e second baby, t h e r e ' d b e no t h i r d baby How t r u e t h o s e words a r e .

I k e p t t h a t f i r s t baby f o r a w h i l e and t h e n gave h e r up f o r a d o p t i o n , which t o r e t h e g u t s o u t of my stomach I went on t o have t h r e e more unI w o u l d n ' t go t o wanted c h i l d r e n . any back a l l e y a b o r t i o n i s t . H o r r o r s t o r i e s l i k e my g i r l f r i e n d u s i n g a k n i t t i n g n e e d l e on h e r s e l f and t h e n b e i n g r u s h e d t o h o s p i t a l w h i l e hemo r h a g i n g ; I was i n t h e f r o n t room and s h e j u s t went t o t h e bathroom and d i d t h i s t h i n g .

She l o s t t h e baby and n e a r l y h e r own l i f e . I had no i d e a s h e was g o i n g t o do t h a t .

I k e p t my n e x t two c h i l d r e n , a s o n and a d a u g h t e r , t h e n I had a n o t h e r which I g a v e up f o r a d o p t i o n - anot h e r painful experience.

Doctors I a s k e d f o r t h e i r keep, b u t t h e y t o l d me t h e i r hands were t i e d b e c a u s e o f t h e law. A l l o f my c h i l d r e n were c e a s a r e a n s e c t i o n . When my d o c t o r a s k e d me, b e c a u s e o f my f a i t h , i f h e c o u l d t i e my t u b e s , I t o l d him t o go for it.

I n my e r a t h e r e were a l o t o f c o u p l e s a s k i n g me i f I knew a n abort i o n i s t t h a t t h e y c o u l d a f f o r d bec a u s e t h e y had enough mouths t o f e e d .

I know a l o t o f p e o p l e a r e t h i n k i n g that I rationalized; that I did the most u n s e l f i s h t h i n g i n t h e world by making o t h e r p e o p l e happy i n c l u d i n g t h e two g i r l s who I a d o p t e d o u t . But I have f e e l i n g s a l s o & I l o v e c h i l d r e n v e r y much & a t t i m e s I w i s h I had of k e p t them, b u t I w o n ' t b l a c k m a i l myself w i t h g u i l t .

I d i d what I t h o u g h t was b e s t .

T h i s Every Woman's H e a l t h C l i n i c is t h e b e s t t h i n g t h a t c o u l d e v e r happen f o r a woman.

Now s h e h a s c o n t r o l o f h e r own body and when s h e makes t h e d e c i s i o n t o h a v e a n abort i o n i t w i l l be h e r c h o i c e and n o t o t h e r people's.

I f these anti-abortionists get t h e i r way i n Ottawa and change t h e l a w s t h a t a l l o w a woman t o h a v e a n a b o r t i o n i t w i l l be l e g a l i z e d c r i m e and back t o t h e d a r k a g e s o f c o a t h a n g e r s , k n i t t i n g n e e d l e s and f i l t h y a b o r t i o n i s t s who d o n ' t even s t e r i l i z e t h e i r 'equipment' and c a u s e a woman t o have a n i n f g c t i o n - maybe s t e r i l i z i n g h e r f o r t h e rest of h e r l i f e .

A b o t c h e d a b o r t i o n can c a u s e t h e woma n t o h a v e a brain-damaged o r r e t a r ded baby o r e v e n c o s t h e r h e r l i f e .

This "serious w r i t e r ' ' ( l a s t i s s u e ) s h o u l d have a s e r i o u s t h o u g h t a b o u t t h e women around h e r . Why d o e s t h a t woman want t o h a v e a n a b o r t i o n ; f o r what r e a s o n ? T h e r e a r e a l o t o f them, and t h e r e a s o n i s u s u a l l y economic. They s i m p l y c a n ' t a f f o r d t o r a i s e a c h i l d ( t o o young, s i n g l e , ) o r t h e y h a v e t o o many c h i l d r e n a s i t is. I am f i r m l y c o n v i n c e d t h a t feminism h a s become a b e t r a y a l of human v a l u e s f o r t h e s a k e o f economic g a i n .

By SAM MEISEL I n t h e e a r l y f a l l of l a s t year, i n t h e g e n e r a l v i c i n i t y of Hazelton, B.C., t h e G i t k s a n and ~ e t ' s u w e t ' e n P e o p l e s blockaded t h e a t t e m p t by Westar Timber Ltd. t o e r e c t a b r i d g e o v e r t h e Babine R i v e r which would have g i v e n a c c e s s t o t h e untouched T r i b a l Lands n o r t h o f t h e r i v e r t o t h e l o g g i n g company.

There was no v i o l e n c e a t t h e t i m e and t h e blockade was s u c c e s s f u l . Also i n t h e F a l l , M r . J u s t i c e Alan MacDonell of t h e B . C . Supreme Court i s s u e d a n i n j u n c t i o n p r e v e n t i n g t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n o f t h e b r i d g e and s u b s e q u e n t a c c e s s t o N a t i v e T e r r i t o r i e s ( t o t h e n o r t h of t h e Babine) u n t i l t h e b r o a d e r Land Claim c a s e i s d e c i d e d , a c a s e which h a s been i n t h e c o u r t s s i n c e May, 1987.

From J a n u a r y 30 t h r o u g h February 1, 1989, I had t h e honour and p r i v i l e d g e of b e a r i n g w i t n e s s i n t h e B . C . Court o f Appeals h e a r i n g s t o t h e a t t e m p t by Westar and t h e P r o v i n c e o f B r i t i s h Columbia t o have t h i s i m p o r t a n t i n j u n c t i o n removed.

Westar a r g u e d , w i t h t h e s u p p o r t o f t h e P r o v i n c e , t h a t inasmuch a s t h e Prov i n c e o f B.C. had a l r e a d y g r a n t e d i t a l e g a l f o r e s t l i c e n s e , Westar had a r i g h t t o c o n t i n u e i t s work, e s p e c i a l l y a s any d e l a y would c a u s e t h e company i r r e p a r a b l e f i n a n c i a l damage.

The G i t k s a n and Wet'suwet'en a r g u e d t h a t , were t h e company t o c l e a r - c u t l o g - - t h a t i s , t o ravage--the a r e a n o r t h of t h e r i v e r a s i t a l r e a d y had i n t h e l a n d s o u t h o f t h e r i v e r , even a s u b s e q u e n t c o u r t v i c t o r y i n t h e i r f a v o u r i n t h e Land Claim c a s e would b e m e a n i n g l e s s ; t h e v a l u e of t h e Land - i t s meaning, i t s power - would b e no more. The G i t k s a n and Wet' s u w e t ' e n u n d e r s t a n d t h i s power, t h i s s p i r i t u a l e s s e n c e t o i s s u e from t h e t r e e s , t h e a n i m a l s , t h e P e o p l e s ' h i s t o r y , t h e t o t a l environment of t h e Land.

T h i s i s t h e Land which t h e G i t k s a n and Wet'suwet'en have l o v e d , honoured, worked and c a r e d f o r t h r o u g h o u t l o n g c e n t u r i e s . A l l t h e P e o p l e s have wanted w i t h r e s p e c t t o t h e i n j u n c t i o n i s a d e l a y , a moratorium on a c c e s s t o t h e i r Land u n t i l t h e Land C l a i m i s d e c i d e d .

Admittedly, t h e l a t t e r two teams e n j o y e d s u p e r i o r i t y , b o t h f i n a n c i a l l y and p o l i t i c a l l y , o v e r t h e P e o p l e s ' team; b u t P e t e r , L o u i s e and Gordon d i d have a few t h i n g s g o i n g f o r them a s t h e l e g a l drama i n e x o r a b l y u n f o l d e d .

Behind them, a s t h e y f a c e d t h e t h r e e - j u s t i c e p a n e l , were t h r e e rows of G i t k s a n E l d e r s and o t h e r They members o f t h e two P e o p l e s s i t t i n g w i t h immeasurable, q u i e t d i g n i t y . d i r e c t e d u n m i s t a k a b l e and t i m e l e s s power t o s u p p o r t t h e e f f o r t s o f t h e i r l a w y e r s , t h e i r f r i e n d s i n making c l e a r t h e c a s e of t h e P e o p l e s t o t h e J u s t i c e s .

And, o f c o u r s e , t h e y had l e g a l and e t e r n a l t r u t h s on t h e i r s i d e . A s L o u i s e w a s t o s a y a f t e r ~ u e s d a y ' sh e a r i n g , d u r i n g which s h e seemed t o demolish t h e o p p o s i n g l a w y e r s ' arguments i n a t o r r e n t o f c l e a r t h i n k i n g and s t r a i g h t t a l k they w e r e i n g : "I c o u l d f e e l y o u r e n e r g y behind m e . . . t h e words j u s t came TThe s p i r i t u a l t e n s i o n i n t h a t courtroom was p a l p a b l e . t h e r e f o r me."

While t h e C o u r t ' s d e c i s i o n w i l l n o t be announced f o r some t i m e , i t seems c l e a r t o me t h a t l e g a l l y , e t h i c a l l y and s p i r i t u a l l y t h e G i t k s a n and Wet'suwet'en have won t h i s round. This i s t h e s t o r y of t h e f i r s t 1t's a sad s t o r y f i l l e d volunteer. w i t h humour and a l t h o u g h i t ' s t r a g i c i t i s h i l a r i o u s a s w e l l ; which s a y s s o m e t h i n g a b o u t my s t a t e o f mind a l t h o u g h I ' m n o t s u r e what.

The v e r y f i r s t v o l u n t e e r was a B a b y l o n i a n who l i v e d i n , t h a t ' s r i g h t , you g u e s s e d i t , A n c i e n t Babylon.

A n c i e n t Babylon was l o c a t e d j u s t s o u t h o f New Babylon and was c a l l e d Ancient mainly because t h e i r buildings weren't a s shiny a s those T h e r e were a l s o a i n New Babylon. l a r g e number o f b e g g a r s and winos t h a t p o p u l a t e d t h e s t r e e t s . It was a s i t u a t i o n n o t u n l i k e t h e one between t h e E a s t End and West Van. The y e a r was 1975 B.C. and t h i s a n c i e n t B a b y l o n i a n , whose name was P h i l , had r e c e n t l y j o i n e d t h e army and was a buck p r i v a t e .

Now o n e day t h e Generals c a l l e d a g e n e r a l (ha ha) m e e t i n g i n t h e main s q u a r e . They needed a v o l u n t e e r t o go on a h a z a r d ous t r e k through t h e l a n d of t h e s a v a g e G e r b i l Men. Of c o u r s e nobody wanted t o go on s u c h a d a n g e r o u s mission.

But P h i l j u s t happened t o absent-mindedly swat at a n annoying b l a c k f l y t h a t was b u z z i n g a r o u n d h i s head.

The G e n e r a l s assumed t h a t h e had r a i s e d h i s hand t o v o l u n t e e r f o r the perilous task.

The G e n e r a l s t h e n t o o k him a s i d e and e x p l a i n e d what h e had t o d o .

I t seemed t h a t t h e r e was a v i s i t i n g d e l e g a t i o n of important Persians a t t h e Royal P a l a c e and t h e y had r u n o u t . o f t o o t h p i c k s t o hold t h e hors-d'o e u v r e s t o g e t h e r . He was t o p r o c u r e some f o r a r e a s o n a b l e p r i c e from t h e G e r b i l Men and b e b a c k no l a t e r t h a n 5:00 t h a t a f t e r n o o n .

Being a v i g o r o u s p a t r i o t and a g e n e r a l l y s t u p i d i n d i v i d u a l he a g r e e d t o do t h e t a s k .

Besides he

was promised 8 c o f f e e t i c k e t s upon hj.s r e t u r n .

To make a l o n g s t o r y s h o r t , P h i l was k i l l e d by t h e G e r b i l Men b e c a u s e t h e y d i d n ' t l i k e h i s s n e a k e r s and the Persian delegation l e f t i n a huff because t h e i r hors d'oeuvres k e p t f a l l i n g a p a r t i n t h e i r hands.

S h o r t l y t h e r e a f t e r a huge war b r o k e o u t between t h e two n a t i o n s which made t h e s p e a r and sword m a n u f a c t u r e r s v e r y happy and t h e y a d o p t e d P h i l a s t h e i r p a t r o n s a i n t . Which g o e s t o show t h a t o n e p e r s o n can make a d i f f e r e n c e , even i f h i s name i s P h i l .

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR!

DANNY KORICA has been nominated to receive this recognition from the Vancouver Volunteer Bureau.

A resident of the downtown eastside for thirty years, Danny became involved in community volunteer work in 1984, after retiring on a disability persion. Danny has been a very active and outspoken advocate of community input and representation throughout his 4% years on the Board of Directors. He has consistently donated over 1,500 hours a year as a volunteer in a variety of positions.

As Vice-Chair of the Seniors, he initiated an annual Christmas Toy donation drive to the local childcare centre, Crabtree Corner. In 1986 Danny was a founding member of the Volunteer Support Group, the mandate of which is to both promote volunteerism as well as to provide a forum for Volunteers to have input to the Centre's operations.

In addition to Danny's outstanding contributions as a Seniors' and Volunteer advocate, he can most often be found in the Carnegie kitchen where he volunteers an average of 150 hours a month preparing foods for fund-raising concessions - for the

Carnegie Volunteers, Seniors and the Pool Room Support Groups.

In addition to Danny's committed dedication to Carnegie users and volunteers, he is also a well-known community figure; he has spearheaded a number of community petition drives over such issues as improvements to street safety, lighting and policing, the fight for a downtown waterfront park and access for the disabled, for programs and staff for local children's activities at Oppenheimer Park. He helped found a tenants organization in the Jenny Pentland Housing in which he resides and is active in the Seniors Second Mile Club.

Besides being a regular face in the Carnegie kitchen, Danny can also be found once a week making cookies for the First United Church.

We are very proud to nominate Danny as our "volunteer of the year" and believe he represents an outstanding example of unselfish caring, commitment and community concern.

Affectionately nicknamed "MR. CARNEGIE" by staff and patrons alike, we feel Danny Korica embodies the true spirit of volunteerism.

Most o f u s a r e aware t h a t t h e s e d a y s g a r b a g e i s a mounting problem all o v e r t h e world.

Countries l i k e ~ a n a d aand t h e USA a r e h a v i n g h a r d e r and h a r d e r t i m e s f i n d i n g p l a c e s t o dump t h e i r garbage.

I n t h e Lower Mainland we j u s t want t o t r u c k i t up t o communities i n t h e i n t e r i o r and dump i t on l a n d t h a t i s s t i l l unspoiled wilderness.

The problem h e r e i s not only does i t r u i n t h a t land, b u t t h e l e a c h i n g o u t o f t o x i n s from t h e g a r b a g e w i l l s p o i l underground w a t e r s y s t e m s f o r m i l e s and m i l e s .

The p l a n e t we l i v e on i s s l o w l y s i n k i n g u n d e r t h e weight o f i t s own garbage.

A l l of us, i n a c o l l e c t i v e manner, have g o t t o f i n d new ways t o use t h e world's resources.

Part of t h e s o l u t i o n i s t o start re-using t h i n g s . We have t o change t h e ' t h r o w away e v e r y t h i n g ' a p p r o a c h . T h i s i s where r e - c y c l i n g comes i n .

Some p l a c e s l i k e S u r r e y a r e d o i n g i t $ a community w i t h c u r b s i d e pickups.

Each household s o r t s i t s g l a s s , t i n and p a p e r , t h e n p u t s i t o u t t o b e p i c k e d l i k e i t d o e s w i t h g a r b a g e . Unl i k e garbage t h e s e items w i l l be taken t o r e - c y c l i n g d e p o t s s o w e c a n prep a r e them t o be used a g a i n .

It p r o b a b l y d o e s n ' t s u r p r i s e many p e o p l e t o know t h a t Vancouver C i t y Council h a s done v e r y l i t t l e t o h e l p r e - c y c l i n g i n Vancouver.

They d o n ' t want t o spend much money on t h i n g s t h a t d o n ' t make money.

But t h e y do end up s p e n d i n g l o t s o f money h a u l i n g g a r b a g e t o dumps.

The problem d o e s n ' t go away e i t h e r , i t j u s t g e t s b i g g e r .

Meanwhile, t h e C a r n e g i e k i t c h e n h a s t a k e n t h e i r own a c t i o n s w i t h o u t w a i t i n g f o r Vancouver C i t y C o u n c i l t o l e a d t h e way.

Garbage i n o u r k i t c h e n i s now b e i n g t r e a t e d d i f f e r e n t l y .

Cans a r e washed, l a b e l s a r e s t r i p p e d o f f , bottoms and c a n s f l a t t e n e d . G l a s s

i s washed c l e a n ; newspaper and cardboard a r e s o r t e d ; compost i s c o l l e c ted i n buckets.

A l l of t h i s material is put i n s e p a r a t e bins, then trucked off t o r e - c y c l i n g d e p o t s . The compost i s dropped o f f a t t h e S t r a t h c o n a Commun i t y Gardens t o b e used a s f e r t i l i z e r i n t h e Carnegie garden p l o t s .

Obviously t h i s i s a l o t more work f o r t h e k i t c h e n v o l u n t e e r s , and a s a community we s h o u l d a p p r e c i a t s i c .

I t a l s o c o s t s money ( f o r t r u c k i n g ) , which t h e C a r n e g i e A s s o c i a t i o n suppl i e d f o r start-up.

A s a community we c a n b e proud t h a t we have j u s t q u i e t l y s t a r t e d t o t a c k l e a b i g problem. We s t a r t e d i n t h e p l a c e where i t i s most e f f e c t i v e - r i g h t i n o u r own community !

Re-cycling i s t h e t o p i c of o u r n e x t Town Forum, on February 19 a t 7:OOpm i n t h e T h e a t r e . The C i t y i s p r o p o s i n g a s o r t i n g d e p o t i n o u r neighbourhood n e a r Terminal and Main. There h a s been some c r i t i c i s m o f t h i s p r o p o s a l , by CUPE and o t h e r s .

The T h e a t r e w a s t r a n s f o r m e d i n t o powwow grounds by t h e t r a d i t i o n a l drummers, Arrows t o Freedom from Vancouver and Thunder E a g l e from L y t t o n , B.C. The e v e n i n g began w i t h a s p e c i a l song and p r a y e r by o u r E l d e r from Coqueleetza Many U s l i c k , f o l l o w e d by a sweat g r a s s smudging. T a s t y c h i l i and bannock w a s s e r v e d t o a t least 250 p e o p l e . Our M C ' s f o r t h e eveni n g were War Dance Walking E a g l e and Frank S u p e r h e a u l t . The o p e n i n g f r i e n d s h i p dance f i l l e d t h e f l o o r w i t h c i r c l e s o f young, o l d , c h i l d r e n and b a b i e s d a n c i n g t o t h e h e a r t b e a t o f Mother E a r t h .

The e v e n i n g w a s f i l l e d w i t h a v a r i e t y of f a n c y d a n c e s & i n t e r t r i b a l s .

Many p e o p l e were d r e s s e d i n t r a d i t i o n a l o u t f i t s b u t o t h e r s danced i n overc o a t s , j e a n s and c i t y moccasins (running shoes).

It w a s o b v i o u s t h a t many o f C a r n e g i e ' s p a t r o n s a r e v e r y f i n e dancers.

The owl d a n c e gave t h e l a d i e s a chance t o p i c k a p a r t n e r from among t h e men.

Should a man r e f u s e t o dance, h e would h a v e t o g i v e t h e l a d y a g i f t . Most men danced !

Words o f wisdom came from many W e were reminded t o show l o v e people. and r e s p e c t t o Mother E a r t h and o u r r e l a t i v e s , t h e f o u r - l e g g e d , swimmers and f l y e r s . Everyone att e n d i n g e x p r e s s e d t h e i r hope and s u p p o r t f o r c o n t i n u e d C u l t u r a l gathe r i n g s throughout t h e year at t h e Carnegie.
