WELCOME elcome to our 2012/2013 Course Directory. This is your guide to studying at Carnegie College and your road map to success. It is designed to give you information about the College and the courses on offer. We hope that it will help you explore, choose and pursue a particular course and related career path. If you need to know more, our staff will be delighted to give you whatever additional information you require regarding the courses and facilities available to learners. Much of our equipment is state-of-the-art and the facilities make your learning purposeful and relevant. Indeed we have students who start with us for Highers and leave with 1st Class Honours degrees. Student President Welcome s Student President, I am delighted that you are considering coming to Carnegie College. There’s so much more to Carnegie than just achieving a qualification. Carnegie offers a wide range of course options and opportunities; it has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, dynamic and enthusiastic staff and a vibrant student community. Have a look at page 21 to find out more about the Students’ Association and how you could become involved and play an important role helping to mould student life and ensuring that the views of all learners are heard. ith such a wide variety of courses to choose from we want to make sure that you can find the information you need as quickly and as easily as possible. This guide aims to answer some of the questions you might have about coming to college and will help you to make informed decisions about your future or continued career. Inside you will find information on a range of topics including finance, facilities, student support and the application process. Our qualifications guide on page 10 will also help you decide what level would be best for you. Our course listing can be found in the centre pages along with a handy pull out application form. The number of courses may seem overwhelming at first but take your time, get advice and choose carefully. College places are becoming a precious resource and we are here to help you make sure that you make the correct choice first time. We understand that there is a lot to think about and you may not find all the answers that you are looking for in this guide alone. If you want to find out more or you want to get information about course content, go on to our website where you will be able to download course factsheets, have a look at progression routes and get a feel for what life is like at Carnegie College. Entry requirements are detailed in each course factsheet and these will give you an idea of what level might be most appropriate for you. However, we recognise that being able to complete a course successfully is not only dependent on having formal qualifications but that life and work experience may also provide you with the skills for entry to many courses. During these difficult economic times when the news is full of stories of increasing unemployment and cuts in public spending, you want to make sure that you give yourself the strongest start in working life. Qualifications Explained
[ ] At Carnegie College, we provide a range of options to suit your individual needs and circumstances, offering useful and meaningful education wherever you are in your career journey. From Introductory and Access courses to HNC, HND and Degree level courses, you’ll be sure to find something suited to your own ability.
Making the Move from School to College It’s important that the transition from school life to college life is a smooth one, wherever you may be studying. We currently have partnership agreements with eight local high schools and work together to prepare pupils for a full-time course at Carnegie on leaving school. Our School College Partnership programmes are designed to give you the opportunity to gain practical knowledge and vocational skills that will be relevant to employers. They are reviewed on an annual basis. Our partnership working ensures that the programmes we offer are appropriate for the senior phase of Curriculum for Excellence, for example: Highers for 6th years Transitional day release programmes Skills for work courses Tasters in vocational areas and an SQA qualification at Level 4. If this is something that interests you, ask for more information from your school guidance teacher.

FURTHER EDUCATION Access/Introductory Courses Ideal for those with no formal qualifications who want to progress to higher levels. National Certificates (NC)/National Qualifications (NQ)/City and Guilds
Aimed at school leavers and adults returning to study Normally one year full-time Can be used as a stepping stone to employment or further study Available at 5 levels preparing you for further study or progression to employment Access Intermediate 1 Intermediate 2 Higher Advanced Higher.
SWAP Access Courses Even if you have been at work (or out of work) for years, or lack formal qualifications, you can still get into higher education by attending a SWAP (Scottish Wider Access Programme) Course. SWAP Programmes are: Designed specifically for adults Can lead to a wide range of university and college opportunities Prepare you for entry into higher education Can guarantee you a place at a college or university, if you complete the programme successfully. What you may not realise is that the range of skills you have built up from previous jobs or from bringing up a family might be the exact skills that universities are looking for; for example, being able to communicate with others or working in teams and solving problems. A SWAP Programme develops these skills and prepares you to succeed in higher education. SWAP Courses at Carnegie are; Access to Health and Life Sciences Access to Arts, Humanities and Primary Education Health and Social Care (Higher) incorporating Access to Nursing

HIGHER EDUCATION HNC Normally offered through the equivalent of 1 years’ full-time study Generally recognised as the equivalent of 1st year at university Option to progress to HND, degree or employment. HND Normally offered through the equivalent of 2 years’ full time study (or 1 year if progressing from HNC) Generally recognised as the equivalent of 2nd year at university Option to progress to degree or employment. By choosing the HNC/HND route to a degree you can ease the transition between your situation today and 3rd year at university as well as making savings on travel and accommodation costs. Degrees We deliver a range of degrees which you can study at the College and are accredited by our higher education partner, Edinburgh Napier University. We are also working with the Open University to offer you the opportunity to progress to the Open University Degree on successful completion of your HNC or HND, giving you access to one of the country’s most flexible and comprehensive learning packages.
Spotlight on Modern Apprenticeships Learn While You Earn If you want to undertake nationally recognised qualifications in your chosen career whilst being employed and receiving a wage, the Modern Apprenticeship scheme is for you. Modern Apprenticeships provide you with Vocational Qualifications which are relevant to your current job role and can provide a stepping stone to career development, salary increases and promotion opportunities. Carnegie College plays an extremely valuable role in bringing together students who are looking for apprenticeships with employers who are looking to fill apprenticeship vacancies. We have excellent working relationships with employers throughout East and Central Scotland and are in daily contact to supply them with new recruits under the Modern Apprenticeship programme. Employers know that our successful students will
have the required level of knowledge to enter their industry and the commitment to pursue their chosen career. Depending on your age, your Employer and Skills Development Scotland could meet the cost of Modern Apprenticeship training so there would be no cost to you to learn new skills. The only investment you need make is in terms of time and commitment. If you are considering undertaking a Modern Apprenticeship or pre apprenticeship training please contact Customer Services.
WORK-BASED/VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS These are qualifications that you earn while in work and are designed to help you in your career. The standards for these qualifications are set by industry and are available at five levels from foundation training to senior management development.
CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Even if you are lucky enough to get your dream job after leaving full-time education don’t let your journey stop there. Continuing Professional Development can help improve your career prospects and boost your earning potential. Further information can be found on page 24.
SVQ/NVQ/VRQ Typically achieved in the workplace and based on standards set by industry 5 levels from junior positions to senior management positions Based on evidence of the way you do your job. Modern Apprenticeships Combine Vocational Qualifications (VQs) with academic study For anyone aged over 16 in paid employment and looking to gain the skills they need to progress in their chosen profession Offer the chance to develop expertise and knowledge through on-the-job assessment, as well as gaining vital skills such as teamwork and problem solving Can often attract funding support, especially for the 16-20 age group.

Professional Institute Qualifications These qualifications are delivered through the Andrew Carnegie Business School and are certificated by bodies such as CMI, CIPD, APMG, AAT, ISMM and ILM helping you gain the skills and knowledge needed to either get a promotion or change career. These are: Delivered part-time to allow you to combine your studies with work or family commitments Offered in the evening to help give your career a real boost without taking a career break Can lead to membership of professional bodies which is often beneficial to career development. PDAs (Professional Development Awards) Offered at certificate, advanced certificate and diploma level Customised qualifications designed to meet the needs of individuals and employers who wish to develop their skills for an employment sector or function. Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF) The SCQF is a way of comparing the wide range of Scottish qualifications. It helps you understand how different courses relate to each other so that you can easily compare one with the other. It also allows you to see where you are now and the different routes you can take to reach your next destination.
All Scottish universities and colleges are now using SCQF levels and credit points to describe their courses, where possible. A wide range of other learning is also being recognised using SCQF levels and credits and some employers are using SCQF levels instead of, or as well as, types of qualification when they advertise jobs. The factsheets for the courses we have listed in this course directory contain entry requirements and a SCQF level. Where we are unable to grade a course according to SCQF guidelines, an equivalent value has been listed where possible.

Deciding to enter education is one of the best decisions you will ever make and deciding to study at Carnegie is an even better one. As a learner, you will increase both your employability opportunities and your earning capabilities. Starting a new course is an exciting time, but it can also be a little daunting. The issue of money and how you are going to fund your studies is a big consideration for many students. The financial support system available can seem very complex at first sight – and that’s where we come in.
To ensure that you have access to all of the funding support available, it is important that you attend one of our funding workshops. These workshops will guide you through the application process for student bursaries, the Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA), student loans, the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS), support for lone parents, and much, much more… To book your place on one of our funding workshops, contact our Customer Service Team now on 0844 248 0115 or email info@carnegiecollege.ac.uk.
Although we aim to provide extensive financial support for learners, as well as providing essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), there are a few occasions where we simply have to apply a small charge. For example, tunics for beauty therapists and whites for chefs. If a small charge is applied to your course, you will be advised during the application process.
Financial Support Available The good news is that depending on your personal circumstances, there’s a wide range of bursaries, grants and allowances available to help fund your College studies. Our Customer Services Advisors are here to advise you on all aspects of student funding, from tuition fees and bursaries to help with housing, childcare and travel costs. The support available depends upon what you will be studying with us, how you choose to study, as well as your personal circumstances. See page 16 for our At-A-Glance Guide to Student Funding, which explains the different levels of funding available. Learners with Additional Support Needs ASPIRE (Additional Support Programmes in Real Environments) offers specifically designed programmes for young people and adults requiring group-based additional support. The specially designed area within the College provides an extremely supportive environment, excellent facilities in assistive technology and programmes that deliver basic vocational and independent living skills. It also houses a fully equipped personal care suite with toilet and shower facilities. This doesn’t mean that the learning journey isn’t exciting. The ASPIRE Centre acts as a hub for learning programmes across all of our main campuses, ensuring that every ASPIRE student has a chance to develop a broad range of skills for life and work.
Multi Faith Room We provide a space on each campus for prayer and as a sanctuary for those who choose to use it. This gives students of different faiths the opportunity to practise their religion in private. Just ask Customer Services for more information if you’re interested in using these rooms.

Our engineering campus in Rosyth is believed to be amongst the largest and best equipped of its type in Scotland, providing approximately 10,000 square metres of purpose-built training facilities, dedicated to the engineering and renewable energy sector. Following a recent £1.5 million investment students now have access to state-of-the-art resources and technology to ensure that they are in the best position to gain the knowledge and skills that they will need to work in this fast growing sector. Our facilities include: The Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre – leading the way in developing and delivering the skills and training required for the renewable energy sector and its associated supply chain. We are also the first College in the UK to deliver the Wind Turbine Modern Apprenticeship The Energy Lab – a dedicated area for learning, teaching and exhibitions with demonstration models of the latest low carbon and renewable technology. Developing Skills for a Sustainable Scotland Carnegie provides specialised training to a wide range of businesses and has pioneered new skills programmes to help put West Fife at the forefront of the renewables industry. From micro and macro renewable engineering to sustainable construction, we aim to support the growth and development of the green skills expansion in Fife by identifying and addressing skills issues across a range of renewable technologies. Carnegie College has a reputation for successful and innovative programme delivery. Whether unemployed, facing redundancy or looking to rejoin the workforce and build a new career, Carnegie College has community based learning and Access Centres ready to help you take that first step. Community Learning Centres are great places to start your learning journey, helping you see what you are already capable of and supporting you to build some experience and skills. You can join small classes in your local community and learn in a place and at a time that suits you. As your confidence grows, you may choose to study further. Typical courses available at our Learning Centres include: Springboard – Access to College SCQF Levels 3, 4 & 5 Essential Skills – ICT, Numeracy and Communication – SCQF Levels 3, 4 & 5 Windows on the World and Local Investigations – SCQF Levels 4 & 5 European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL).
If you are ready to make use of your experience, qualifications and capabilities in the job market then our Access Centres run programmes that will support personal development and increased confidence with regards to connecting to employers, gaining further training and progressing to employment. Our experienced staff support individuals in achieving their goals and additionally in tackling specialist needs, including criminal disclosure, health disclosure, experiences around drug and/or alcohol issues and those who have perhaps had long term illness and require a little more support to return to employment, further training or education.
At Carnegie College, we have adopted a culture that instils, encourages and supports enterprising behaviours and entrepreneurism, embedding enterprise into the curriculum at every opportunity. By working together, we will equip you with the knowledge, information and confidence to adopt enterprising approaches which will give you a competitive advantage when job seeking, progressing to university or simply in your future life journey. We actively promote and embrace our value to “actively support enterprise, creativity and open-mindedness” through various initiatives, including: providing business start-up and self employment courses through the management of hugely successful government contracts working with Business Gateway Fife to offer a selection of workshops to help both SMEs and new starts. By providing these services and helping to establish more enterprises, we are helping to regenerate local business activity bringing more economic activity to the area and helping to stop economic decline.
Many courses are free to access although the higher level courses may need some contribution. Don’t let concerns about funding hold you back as there may be funding available for some courses. For example, if you earn less than £22,000 you can set up an Individual Learning Account (ILA). This is easy to do and will support some training up to the value of £200 (if required). West Fife Enterprise At West Fife Enterprise, training programmes combine personal development and vocational qualifications in: Administration and ICT Metalwork and Fabrication Woodwork and Carpentry. There is also a wide range of employer engagement opportunities. Through West Fife Enterprise’s transport link service, access is also offered to individuals residing in the Central Fife area. Choose Your Course
Pick up a copy of our course directory and go through the support information that is available. It also contains an index of all the courses that are available. Once you have found a course, go online to get the full details and the entry requirements. If you have the relevant qualifications and/or experience for the course which you are applying for, then you can go straight to the application stage. If you would like further information then you can either phone, email or come in person. An appointment can be arranged with one of our advisors to help you make the decision that’s right for you. Speaking to someone can also help you ensure that you have chosen the course which is most appropriate for your career goals. If you do not have the relevant qualifications to meet the entry requirements, then call us to arrange an informal meeting with the relevant course advisor who can discuss alternative options with you.

Receive an Offer
Unconditional You have definitely been accepted – all you need to do is advise us that you are accepting the place and send back any relevant documentation. If anything changes, please let us know as soon as possible to ensure that this space is opened up to someone else. Conditional We will specify what further entry requirements you need to be accepted onto the course. Once you have met the necessary criteria, telephone the college to confirm your offer of a place. Unsuccessful If your application is unsuccessful you will still have the opportunity to discuss alternative options with one of our Guidance Team. Just make an appointment through Customer Services.

Complete an Application Form
You can apply online, by post or in person. Our courses usually start in August or September but don’t leave it to the last minute to apply. Return your application as soon as possible to increase your chances of getting your first choice course. You can apply for a course at any point, however, many of our courses are very popular and may have limited places available. We would therefore encourage you to apply as early as possible to secure your place and to ensure relevant funding is in place. Try to complete all sections of your application as fully as possible and please let us know if you have additional support needs. If you are having difficulty completing any part of the application form, then a member of our Customer Services Team will be pleased to help you If you are applying for a BA or BSc level course you will need to apply through UCAS. Ask our Guidance Team for further information.

Accept Your Offer
Confirm that you are accepting your place on the course by sending back relevant documentation Complete all funding forms for your chosen course as soon as possible Ensure you have the required equipment and resources for starting you course if necessary. (For certain courses you may be required to purchase clothing, etc and/or course materials.) You will get your timetable on the first day of your course
Sort out Your Funding To ensure funding for your place, complete all necessary funding forms where applicable as soon as possible. You can also speak to one of our student finance team if you need to. Further information can be found on page 14. Not completing this part of the process can jeopardise your place.
What happens after I have applied? We will be in touch to acknowledge receipt of your application. You will be contacted again to arrange an informal interview, if this is required. In some cases the course you’ve applied for might be full. If so, we will contact you and advise you about alternative courses that might be suitable. Attend an Interview
If you meet the entry criteria, you may be invited to an interview. The interview is informal and gives you further opportunity to find out if this is the right course for you and to ask questions about the course, timetable, materials and support available.

Enrol
Most courses start in August or September. You will be informed of the enrolment date and start date for your particular course. What happens if I change my mind? No problem! If you want to apply for a different course or withdraw altogether, please let us know as soon as you can. This will allow us to offer the place to somebody else. Getting here All of our campuses throughout West Fife are conveniently located regardless of whether you travel by public transport or car. The excellent road, rail and bus systems provide you with plenty of choice in getting here. For further information on travelling to the College by public transport call the Traveline on 0871 200 2233. You can also visit our website at www.carnegiecollege.ac.uk where you can view one of our maps or enter your journey details into our on-line travel planner. Did you know‌you can also buy a unirider bus ticket which is only available to students and is valid on all Stagecoach bus services in Fife? The ticket is valid all day and night on the network of buses that can get you to lectures, shops, pubs, clubs, gyms, libraries... just remember to take it with you. Once you buy your ticket you can use it to travel between the two dates printed on the ticket by showing it to the driver with your student ID card. For more information about this scheme go to the tickets section on the Stagecoach website (www.stagecoachbus.com). Help with travel costs is given to all full-time, further education students under the age of 18 who live more than 2 miles from their main place of study. For students over the age of 18 help with travel expenses depends upon household income. Contact us for more information.
