INTRODUCCION

Literature is a tool that learners need to learn English Language. (Eagleton, 1996) in his book “ Literary Theory An Introduction � mentioned that Literature has become effectively identical with the opposite of analytical thought and conceptual enquiry: whereas scientists, philosophers and political theorists are saddled with these drably discursive pursuits, students of literature occupy the more prized territory of feeling and experience. In addition, it has such a great useful techniques that learners apply in language to facilitate their language acquisition. One of them is called Analyzing technique in which learners will be able to centre their attention in the language of the text. This technique at the same time presents its advantages and disadvantages that will be explained with examples. So, readers will have a deep knowledge about this technique.

Analyzing is basically "taking something apart," in order to understanding it better by considering its component parts separately as well as together, (Williamson, 2005).

Before applying this technique is really important that teacher consider select literary text in which students feel so comfortable. It depends in specific aspects like: Age of students Gender Educational lives Social background Literary background

Reasons to use it:  Analyzing literary texts can be very useful in order to motivate students to develop three basic language skills: reading writing speaking.  Students have a variety of enjoyable text to analyze such as: Short stories Poems Novels Plays Song Lyrics

¿Why use Literature to learn English Language?

Learners will have such a creative mind that they can imagine their own stories using the foreign language. Also, they are able to expand their abilities to interpret the culture of the people whose language they are studying. (Borja & Torralbo)

Learners need a variety of registers, styles and genres. So, they can differentiate each one. Also, the language using in the text is not only distinctive linguistically, but also socially because it shows social communicative function. (Violetta, 2015)

 The literary text shows the real feelings of the writer and this generates a powerful motivation in the learner. With the literary text the student accesses this personal experience, if she is touched by the theme and provoked, she will be able to relate what she is reading to her world, to what she knows and feels.  The learners will be able to centre their attention in the language of the text.

ADVANTAGES  Analyzing literary texts can be very useful  Learners develop skills.  Learners distinguish linguistic and communicative function.  Learn language of the text.

DISADVANTAGES

If the literary text is not select according to the specific aspects; age of students, gender, educational lives, social background, and Literary background. Students are not motive, so they don’t develop skills, they do not learn the points of advantages

How to analyze a text?

1. Read or reread the text with specific questions in mind.

2. Marshal basic ideas, events and names. Depending on the complexity of book, this requires additional review of the text.

3. Think through your personal reaction to the book: identification, enjoyment, significance, application.

4. Identify and consider most important ideas (importance will depend on context of class, assignment, study guide).

5. Return to the text to locate specific evidence and passages related to the major ideas.

6. Use your knowledge following the principles of analyzing a passage described below: test, essay, research, presentation, discussion, enjoyment.

Terms for Analyzing Literature Literary (McGee) Short Story These terms make it easier for writers of literary analyses to communicate with each other.

By using the same “jargon” or language, literary critics do not have to define common ideas constantly.

Character: A character is a “person” in a literary work.

Drama: This term refers to plays, works of literature that can be read and performed on stage.

Fiction: Work that comes from a writer’s imagination like: short stories, novels, fairy tales, folklore, and fables.

Foreshadowing: uses either action or mood to prepare the reader for something that will happen later in the work of fiction or drama Narrator: The narrator of a literary work is the person who tells the story the characters.

Personification: Giving animals or inanimate objects human characteristics is personification.

Plot: The term plot refers to the action or “story line” of the literary work.

Setting: Setting is where the action takes place and includes both the physical location as well as the time period.

Symbolism: Writers use symbolism so that a person, object, or event can create a range of emotional and intellectual responses in the readers. For example, using a flag as a symbol might conjure patriotic feelings in one person, anti-patriotic feelings in another, or perhaps,

Elephant and Friends (students)

One day an elephant wandered into a forest in search of friends.

He saw a monkey on a tree.

“Will you be my friend?" asked the elephant.

Replied the monkey, “You are too big. You can not swing from trees like me."

Next, the elephant met a rabbit. He asked him to be his friends.

But the rabbit said, “You are too big to play in my burrow!"

Then the elephant met a frog.

“Will you be my friend? He asked.

“How can I?" asked the frog.

“You are too big to leap about like me."

The elephant was upset. He met a fox next.

“Will you be my friend?" he asked the fox.

The fox said, “Sorry, sir, you are too big."

The next day, the elephant saw all the animals in the forest running for their lives.

The elephant asked them what the matter was.

The bear replied, “There is a tier in the forest. He’s trying to gobble us all up!"

The animals all ran away to hide.

The elephant wondered what he could do to solve everyone in the forest.

Meanwhile, the tiger kept eating up whoever he could find.

The elephant walked up to the tiger and said, “Please, Mr. Tiger, do not eat up these poor animals."

“Mind your own business!" growled the tiger.

“Mind your own business!" growled the tiger.

The elephant has a no choice but to give the tiger a hefty kick.

The frightened tiger ran for his life.

The elephant ambled back into the forest to announce the good news to everyone.

All the animals thanked the elephant.

They said, “You are just the right size to be our friend."

Objectives:  Learners identify the main characters and the others.  Learners learn vocabulary about animals  Learners identify verbs and their tense (simple past).

Students start analyzing the title of the short story .

Teacher and students read together.

Teacher asks questions such as: How many animals are there?

Where was the elephant?

Why the monkey do not want to be a elephant as a friend ? and so on.

The students must reread the short story and ask to the teacher the ideas that are not clear.

The students infer in the text to conclude the short story

Don’t understand lectures!

It may be the lack of study techniques

 I recommend using strategies when you are reading such as: Skimming Scanning Key Words spotting

 Take into account that as a reader you must identify: Introduction Body Conclusion.

 Read the chapter headings  Key words and ideas They are often found in the opening paragraphs of a chapter or subsection of a chapter.

Pay attention to the opening sentence and the opening paragraph.
