A piece of history removed

The face of Main Street in Carlyle has been changed as a piece of history was demolished on Sunday, Aug. 25. Originally the home of the Royal Bank, which was built in approximately 1917, the building went on to house the R.M. of Moose Mountain #63 and then offices. Ron Kyle has owned the building for 57 years and said that the time had come when the cost of repairs outweighed the usefulness of the building so he arranged to have it demolished before it became a hazard.

Modern day politics means more scrutiny needed

By Murray Mandryk Maybe it would be productive to remember that politics was always this way.

Maybe it just wasn’t quite as easy to see. In the days before everyone got to see and hear everything on social media, maybe it wasn’t in our face the way it is right now.

Because it now is, it seems that much easier to have whatever view we may have to be easily reinforced.

But because of all of this, we have all that much more reason during this upcoming federal election campaign to not only listen what our politicians have to say but also make a serious and independent assessments of those policies.

Maybe we should remember that this was always our duty.

The thought crosses one’s mind after the recent pronouncement from Environment Minister Catherine McKenna that hinted a re-elected federal Liberal government would sit down with the provinces and review the carbon tax levy that was to be capped at $50 a tonne in 2022.

We need to assess this.

First, McKenna’s latest assessment does seem to be very different than what McKenna was saying last June when she that it would be capped at $50 a tonne, a levy that translates into about 11 cents a litre at the gas pumps.

McKenna’s comments came in response the Parliamentary Budget Office report suggesting the carbon levy would have increase to $102 a tonne if the federal tax is the only measure used to meet world targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions for 2030.

Critical to voting decisions is clarity from out political leaders and trust that they will keep their word. That McKenna and the Liberals are now saying something very different only two months after making their June commitment says much.

And, as has always happened in politics, opposition politics are having hay day with the notion that the Liberals have a hidden agenda to raise the tax at will, should they be re-elected.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, who has vehemently opposed the carbon tax, making it the issue in politics in this province, has eagerly joined in.

And if you have paid any interest to in social media, you have likely heard any number of Conservative politicians and their supporters bemoan this.

Again, this is how politics has always been played. However, in this day and age when we can so easily choose to hear and see only what we want to hear and seat, maybe it’s especially important to take a broader look.

There are many reasons to oppose the federal carbon tax. One of the best ones is that there isn’t much to suggest it’s achieving its desired goal.

If Ottawa is now charging an extra four cents on gas and giving families back $600 a year in tax credits, what is the incentive change?

But let’s take a realistic look at how that four cents a litre, or even 11 cents a litre in three years, is. Is it truly bankrupting business or slowing the economy.

While the provincial government now claims it’s killing jobs, (1,400 in the oil sector, alone) it seldom bothers to mention over supply causing low prices of around $50 US a barrel WTI are a far bigger factor. In short, the boom and bust of oil is seeing a bit of another bust.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan is monthly boasting of sizeable increases in provincial employment, 12,000 new jobs a month compared with the same time last year.

Looking at it objectively, the economy isn’t suffering as much as claimed.

And then there is the messy question: If this isn’t solution to manmade global warming, what is?

As this election approaches, it would be helpful for voters to independently weigh all such matters.

Please, anybody else’s name but mine I don’t like wearing name tags.

They’re often way too big, or the adhesive isn’t great and the ends curl up, or they are emblazoned with the most unnecessary words imaginable…My Name Is. Seriously, if it’s a name tag doesn’t it go without saying the name on it belongs to the person wearing the tag? Nonetheless I fully recognize that tags can help identify individuals within a larger group we Shelley Luedtke have not met before. That can be a beneficial thing, as long as the people who are required to fill them out themselves have decent penmanship. Otherwise, why bother.

The prolonged stares trying to figure out what someone has written can lead to rather awkward moments.

But I attended two events this summer where I was handed a name tag I was proud to wear. One was a church event in Indiana where the (overly large) tags served not only as identification but also as entrance to the convention and the meals. Who wants to argue with that process? Since the tags also included where we were from it served as a conversation starter many times as the largely American group seemed quite excited to talk about Canada.

The other event was a family reunion where descendants of the nine siblings in my grandfather’s family came together to reconnect with or perhaps meet first, second and third cousins. Upon entering the Community Hall where the reunion was held, we all filled out name tags that identified which branch of the family we belonged to. It made associations very easy since a quick glance enabled us to put people on the right branch, even if we were meeting them for the first time.

uncles, or reading the histories of great and greatgreat grandparents were in turn heartwarming and humorous; emotional and inspirational. The line of people from which I come endured the kind of hardships and celebrated the types of successes their contemporaries did. The same can be said of each subsequent generation. Much in life wasn’t easy for those that came before, and much of life isn’t easy for those that followed. But there are so many reasons to be thankful, and amidst the reminiscing was an awareness that the names on those tags intertwined each of us in a pretty special heritage of faith and family I find it interesting that we are reluctant to wear name tags bearing our own names yet we’ll parade around wearing tags with someone else’s.

Emblazoned on t-shirts, handbags, running shoes, phone cases, jeans and hats are names belonging to someone else. People we don’t know. Designers and companies charging us premium prices for the privilege, no less. Yet we continue to buy things with their name on it. Why? Perhaps to demonstrate allegiance to a particular brand we like, or to be one of the crowd, or maybe, when it comes to some of the higher end items, to demonstrate inclusion into an elite group we know many cannot afford.

Consider the basic white cotton t-shirt that can sell anywhere from $5 to upwards of $300. Fabric, the manufacturing process and where that manufacturing takes place certainly are important variables but as one consumer analyst reported, when it comes to choosing to wear the one with the name of the designer “you’re paying for the prestige on top of the product.”

So we wear other names on our stuff with seeming pride, but our own with a bit of reluctance. How great it would be if we would stop looking for validation in wearing the names of others, and instead find assurance in claiming our own. That’s my outlook.

Financial Focus Managing Your Money - Sometimes cheaper is more expensive It can pay to pay more.

So, in this case, you’ve made the right, although initially more expensive, choice.

you’ll end up with a product of lesser quality, and quality often dictates lifespan.

Take that new mattress you want: consumer rating organizations have found that a $1,200 mattress could last for 20 years or more, while you’ll likely need to replace a $200 mattress in four or five years.

Or that refrigerator you’re thinking of replacing: according to consumer rating organizations, the average life expectancy of a fridge is 13 years and while it’s difficult to predict that a more expensive model will last longer, you’ll be getting a more reliable and energy efficient product that may save you money in the long run.

The same reasoning can

be applied to food, clothes, electronics and almost anything else you buy: choosing quality over quantity will almost always save you money in the long run. Of course, you shouldn’t always go for the most expensive product.

Why do cats rub their faces on everything?

Have you ever wondered why cats rub their faces on seemingly everything they cross paths with? This behaviour is called bunting, and it’s actually a form of feline communication. However, depending on what they rub themselves on, it can have different meanings.

Cats have scent glands located in their feet, below their chin, on their lips, near their temples, along their tails and in their ears.

These glands release pheromones, which cats use to

mark their territory. If a cat rubs itself all over your furniture and walls, it’s saying that those things are the property of kitty.

Bunting may be a show of dominance over other felines in the house, or it may be a way for the cat to feel more comfortable at home.

If your kitty doesn’t like to show their face when you have visitors, they may rub their scent around the house once the strangers have gone. Bunting allows them to reclaim the house and feel calmer.

But what about when a cat rubs itself on you?

Do they consider you their property as well? The answer depends on your relationship with the kitty in question.

Cats often rub themselves on newcomers to their home. If they do this, it’s to gather the intruder’s scent and find out more about them. However, if they bunt against their human companions, it’s a sign of affection and that they consider you a part of their family.

Art Colony Retreat hosts incredible talents

The Mother Teresa Centre and Mess Hall at Kenosee Lake was home to the Moose Mountain

Provincial Park Artist’s Colony 3rd Annual Retreat from August 24 to 31. With 20 artists taking part, there was no shortage of music, dancing, fun and fellowship.

ATTENTION The Town of Carlyle & R.M. of Moose Mountain No. 63 Capital Recreation & Culture Funding Program.

The program is available to any Town of Carlyle recreation or cultural organization who is interested in obtaining funding for capital projects. The program consists of two components, an annual limited matching grant and a larger long term matching grant. Application deadlines are March 31st and September 30th of every year. Funding is limited and applications will be reviewed by the Recreation and Culture Foundation.

Further information and application forms are available from the Town of Carlyle or R.M. of Moose Mountain No. 63 municipal offices.

Organizers Jerri Laird, Holly Dauvin, Jacqui Beckett and Ken Fredrickson believe that they have the perfect-sized group for the retreat, where everyone takes turns cooking, and the food is as wonderful as the art.

While everyone interviewed praised the organizers, they all commented on the wonderful venue, and the sense of family, where everyone was welcome and encouraged to try things that may have been out of their comfort zone, with no sense of judgement or feeling less of an artist than anyone else.

The group gathered from Saturday afternoon to the following Saturday at noon and the icing on the cake is the MMPP Artist’s Colony Show Wine and Cheese event held on the Thursday evening at the Kenosee Lake Recreation Hall.

There, artists gather and share the items they have been working on at the retreat, in a showcase of talent that would surprise many people. I, for one, am overwhelmed by the artistic talents to be found in our area. While you may think that ma-

jor cities like Toronto or Vancouver house major talents, you would be wrong. There are artists with major talents to be

found in villages and towns all over southeastern Saskatchewan and into Manitoba, as evidenced by the artists

gathered at the retreat.

Jan Rutten grew up in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and her artistic talents were inspired by her high school art teacher.

Flowers and seascapes are her favourite topics, and she works mostly in acrylic and watercolours. She has branched out into creating with beach glass, and has enjoyed attending art workshops over her 20 years of creating art.

Alison Lewis of Assiniboia spent some time learning to paint on silk, stepping out of her comfort zone during the Artist’s Colony Retreat held at the Mother Theresa Centre in Moose Mountain Provincial Park. She says that watercolor is her comfort zone, and she has retired from teaching art at the high school level, giving her more time to work on her passions of art.

She has worked with acrylic, clay and hand building. She organized the Assiniboia Art Retreat and met Ken Fredrickson through the Shurniak Gallery, who invited her to attend this year’s retreat.

Bringing photos to life

Wool takes a new form in the hands of an artist

Norma Jones of Estevan has been an artist all her life, working in mixed media, acrylic, jewellery and watercolour. She paints still life,

portraits, and does cutwork watercolours.

The cutwork watercolours are made with pieces of rice paper, cut out, stained and secured with a mat medium (like a glue). The painting is very textured and

uses the layers to create depth.

She enjoys the challenges presented by the exposure to different types of art and artists she has experienced over the last three years at the retreat.

Sheila Farstad of North Portal says that her current passion of the past four years is needle felting. She has done two-dimensional dye works, watercolor painting and mixed media – drawing on paper with liquid rubber and creating something best described as batiks,

but on paper rather than fabric, spraying the paper with water and then adding dry dye for an explosion of colour, removing the rubber to create a contrast.

She was thinking about how watercolor paper is made of cotton and sizing, so she wondered why she couldn’t use fabric dye and see what happened. Needle felting

is a process where wool, whether dyed or natural, combed or raw, is poked with a blunt needle causing it to take form. She often uses wire to form a skeleton or framework and the felted wool becomes a giraffe or a cat or anything her mind can conceive. The lifelike expressions she achieves with her needle are amazing.

Joseph T. Cornforth calls Kennedy home and finds inspiration for his art all over God’s creation.

During the Artist’s Colony Retreat he com-

pleted a painting of ice layers he saw in the ditch, after the water retreated, along with some sketches. He has been coming to the retreat for all three years it has been in operation, working mainly in acrylic and pencil. He came to at-

tend the Western Christian College in Weyburn and liked it so much in the area that he stayed.

He has also worked in leather, rebuilding saddles and even creating a pair of sandals from a pattern provided by his customer.

By Linda Wegner Tomorrow, Saturday afternoon, a Celebration of Life is being held for a dear friend. I admit I am struggling with my thoughts and with making a decision as to whether or not I will attend. Why would I ever think of such a question? Well, it’s just that I would far rather remember her in the setting of the wonderful times we shared tea, lunch or our daily phone chats. We spoke almost every day; we shared each others’ triumphs and struggles and we often spoke of our reliance on and appreciation for the peace that comes from having committed our lives to

Christ. I’ve pretty much come to terms over the fact that she’s gone (until we meet in Heaven); to recall all that I will miss in her physical absence is something else.

My feelings have been just as mixed – though not nearly as dramatically – as I’ve been reading through the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament of the Bible. Faced with seemingly overwhelming circumstances, the people either relied on their own perceived strength and were soundly defeated or they asked for God’s direction and help and were given deliverances from their enemies.

They vacillated between

joining in some deplorable practices with their neighbours (just one example: the sacrifice of children to pagan gods) or in choosing to follow God’s instructions.

It’s like that in our Christian faith, even for those who have made a complete surrender of their lives to Him. Daily we’re faced with situations that demand we either forget or remember. We are exhorted to do both, albeit in different contexts. “Forgetting those things that are behind”, tells us that sins and failures confessed are to be left with God and we’re to learn and move on; but, let’s always remember “…that the Lord is coming soon.”

Wrestling comes to the Kenosee Super Slides

Saturday, August 31 at 1 p.m. marked the first wrestling event ever held at the Kenosee Super Slides. Jan Armstrong is proud of his time spent in professional wrestling under his moniker JS McStrongArm #worldfamous, #thevoiceofchoice, #moretalentthanyoucanswingafistat, and he wanted to offer family time to his for-

mer wrestling mates and their families, while offering his customers a look at the talent he was surrounded with during his time with Gold Dragon Wrestling, to mention just one.

The first match of the day featured Jacked Jesus aka Tommy Lee Curtis, a 232 lb. wrestler from Reston, MB who has wrestled coast to coast for 12 years and is now focusing on the USA, mainly in Minnesota and North Dakota.

His opponent Mitch “Lightening” Smith hails from Moose Jaw, SK and has been wrestling since he was fouryears-old. Smith went to Japan in 2005 during his high school wrestling days and turned professional in 2012. At 18-years-old, he started training and had his first match in March 2012 at Pure Power Wrestling in Lethbridge, AB against Armstrong. Lightening has an interesting background, not one most would expect from the wrestling stereotype. He is an avid dancer, with 12 years of tap, jazz, hiphop, lyrical theatre and even ballet at the Denee School of Dance.

A wrestling coach at Thom Collegiate in Regina, he strongly believes that dance teaches balance, discipling and expands whatever you can do in life. He says you don’t have to fit into a mould, whatever you perceive wrestling to be, it can be. It’s not right, not wrong - like politics – it is a personal thing.

In his third year of Arts Education, he looks forward to completing his degree and working in the school system as a teacher.

From Page 10 - Wrestlers at Kenosee Super Slides Her opponent, Leo “London” has spent nine years wrestling with Premier Championship Wrestling out of Winnipeg. His style of wrestling is known as technical wrestling – meaning he is skilled at taking limbs and bending them in ways they shouldn’t in order to escape holds.

He is also a university student and was drawn to wrestling as a child.

Growing up with hyperthyroidism, he was an under-sized person and he quickly realized that leverage can nullify the advantage of size. He also wrestles with his brother and they are five-time Professional Canadian Wrestling Tag Team Champions.

Once he completes his degree in psychology, “London” has hopes to work as a first responder in an Emergency Crisis Unit for psychological emergencies, as part of Winnipeg’s Emergency Response team.

“Agent Red” Ian Martin is originally from Brandon, MB but started wrestling training in Winnipeg during 2000. Life got in his way and he didn’t complete that training, moving to Moose Jaw. There he met Jan Armstrong, while working at a gym and driving cab.

As they chatted one day Armstrong talked about his dream of opening a Mixed Martial Arts show, lamenting the many road blocks he was encountering, Red suggested he consider wrestling instead. Red shares that he became hooked on wrestling as a kid, watching it on Saturday mornings with his grandfather and that interest had never really waned. He became the first wrestler to earn a belt at Gold Dragon Wrestling in 2008 and the last one to win a belt in the company as well.

Feeling his age, Red now works as a tattoo artist in Brandon and wrestles for fun at events like this.

The event at the Super Slides ended with a grudge match, as Red’s scheduled opponent, Big “Mo” Dangerous failed to appear, and Mitch Lightening stepped up.

When he beat “Red”, Armstrong, who had been serving as referee suddenly became enraged and attacked him.

It was too much for Big “Mo” and after a skirmish inside the ring between JS and Big Mo, in which Mo was deemed the winner, the entertainment suddenly shifted to outside the ring, as the spectators alternately cheered and booed while Lightening manhandled JS McStrongArm into the pool near the kiddie slides.

Leonard and Lil Patton left on Aug. 21 for Calgary where they visited their daughter Wendy, Rob Lutzer and granddaughters Kaylee and Reece. They attended the U15 Girls Soccer Provincial Playoffs where granddaughter Reece participated in. The team ended up winning the Bronze for the Province – way to go team. Len and Lil returned home to Alida on Aug. 26.

On Monday, Aug. 26 Gray and Edel travelled to Regina where they visited with their son, Jeff and Gray had a medical appointment. Then on Tuesday, Aug. 27 Edel had a medical appointment, they returned home Aug. 28.

Faye Walker was in Regina for a medical appointment Aug. 28 and returned home on Thursday.

Gee whiz only two days left and then another month is done – where does the time go? You better

make good use of the swimming pool this last weekend, as it will be closing down for another season and it will be another whole year before it opens again.

With the great hot and sunny days we’ve had this summer the pool was definitely the popular place to be. Once again wish to give notice to our lifeguards, instructors and maintenance people – you all did an excellent job this summer and we do appreciate all the time and effort you folks give towards this summer job. Kudos to you all.

It’s back to school to Tuesday, Sept. 3 for the students – teachers and staff have already put in a week’s work preparing for classes to begin etc. See you around the school during special school events; look forward to seeing everyone again. Thank you to Doris and Rhonda Erickson, Mary and Sharon Thiessen, who were our drivers on a harvest tour of the district. Leora had seen five combines going in one field on a trip to Rocanville. We have since had over two inches of rain at the Villa, with eavestroughs overflowing in one thunderstorm.

Visitors during the week included: Sharon Anderson, Janice Kaleman and Norma Wilson, Regina; Sharon and Richard Beutler with Joyce; Damon, Jessica, Nya and Josh Lamontagne, Regina; Marilyn Mason, Manor, and Coral Asmundson with Grace Toms.

The Mark Ockerbloom family from Philadelphia were visiting with Janet and Philip at the farm. They came to sing with Charlotte and Janet at the Villa UC

Hymnsing; and Janet spent three afternoons at the farm. John had a U Drive from Winnipeg, so I saw harvest in various stages. Mary and John, Philip, and Anne and Matthew celebrated Janet’s 95th birthday with beef dinner at the Villa, before driving back to Winnipeg. They sang “Bless this House” and Anne sang a farewell “Sleepy Song” for grandma. The highlight was photographer Matthew’s portrait of Grandma.

He took a series of takes onto his color printer, connected to Phil’s computer.

They really appreciated the cool weather in Saskatchewan, after the smog and heat wave of the East Coat. They saw moonrise and sunsets, and one night was clear for stargazing. They came back to 90 degrees a week later.

Circle of Friends remembered the toys we had as children. Char-

lotte’s grandpa had built her a rocking horse, a rocking chair and a baby carriage. Violet had a rag doll her mother made, filled with sawdust.

Eunice’s grandma made her a stuffed doll out of a man’s sock. Marie’s parents adopted a little sister for her, a child with learning problems. Margaret’s doll had a plastic cradle, made by her grandfather. Grace had a set of tiny dishes; Leora 6 cups and saucers. Eaton’s Beauty Dolls were the dream of little girls. Both Ruths and Janet got them; but the heads were fragile, and broke when we dropped them. Carol remembered her skipping rope and an India rubber ball. Kittens were Marianne’s favorite. She used her imagination.

Clifford had a steam engine that worked. Fred played marbles, rode the calves, trained horses and played hockey with willow sticks and frozen road apples.

The children’s Tuesdays at the Museum finished last week. There were a variety of activities, including sidewalk chalk art, blowing bubbles, a safari hunt, playing with games from by gone years and using different items found in the museum. Juice and cookies were served. Attendance ranged from 4-15 children.

Happy 80th birthday to Helen Aulie of Ryerson. She travelled to Dubuc last Saturday to celebrate with her family and friends. We knew Helen when we lived in Dubuc and were happy to renew our friendship when she married Jack.

Ethel Choo Foo also celebrated her 80th birthday last week. She had a wonderful meal on Aug. 27 at Kenosee Inn with a cheesecake (made

by Trevor Latham) for dessert. Those in attendance were Fr. Fry and his housekeeper, Marge, Al and Lucy Chubak,

Ethel’s sister, Mag, her brother, Anthony and his wife Di and of course Sean. Ethel’s family had flown here from Chester, England. Ethel had a second celebration on Sunday in Swift Current with Liam and family and friends. Her birthday was Sept. 3.

Allan and Dianne Bunz have returned after enjoying a holiday to USA. Jolie and Aron and children, Madison,Carter, Rylan and Nathan joined them in Wawota and then left on Aug. 15. They motored to Minneapolis where they spent two days touring the Mall of America. They then flew to New Orleans and stayed one night at the French Quarter. Aron’s parents and sister and brother-in-law(all from Hudson Bay) joined them and they all boarded The Carnival Glory for a 7 day cruise. Ports visited were Key West, Florida. Free Port and Nassau in the Bahamas.

Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools.

The actual run is being held Oct. 6 in Regina and it is uncertain as to whether a staff member from Carlyle will run, but they will be donating the proceeds from their BBQ, along with the money earned through raffle tickets and a 50/50 draw. Mike Makelki was the lucky winner of the 50/50 draw.

Collene Verbeem and Joy Luzong were kept busy with the BBQ and former staff Gordon Paulley and Sharon Humphries were happy to help them out. AQT Water Management (Alameda/Stoughton), Carlyle Southern Plains Co-op and Carlyle Food World were sponsors of the event and their donations are gratefully acknowledged.
