In past years the show has welcomed thousands of people through its doors and this year was no

exception. Organizer Nicole Currie estimates over 3,000 people took in the event.

With 63 vendors from Alberta, all the way to Ontario, it boasted a wonderful array of talents from décor to jewellery, wooden toys to pottery, intricately designed pop-up greeting cards to handmade pet accessories, handmade knives to laser cut metal signs, handmade clothing to wall art, and of course,

Most loved vendors from previous shows were back and new vendors showcased their talents as well. Currie says that you can’t help but appreciate the time, talent, passion and love that all of the artisans pour into their work. Arcola Craft and Trade Show has large attendance Submitted by Kelly Johnson The Arcola Craft and Trade Show was held Saturday, Sept. 21 in the Prairie Place Complex in the Town of Arcola. Approximately 1,311 people attended this year’s event.

Upon arriving, one finds parking at a premium, the lot is overflowing. Inside it is a beehive of activity.

Gwen Taylor is the manager of the event, as well as one of the vendors.

She says there were 73 vendors set up for the day.

They hailed from two provinces, including the communities of Arcola, Elkhorn, Swift Current, Esterhazy, and Gull Lake ,to name a few.

There is something of interest for everyone attending this event. For the kids “Skye and Marshall” are roaming the venue as the Paw Patrol. The candy floss sold very well! There are crafts of all kinds, clothing, personal care products, household furnishings and decorations, as well as numerous food venders selling everything from apple butter to pumpkins.

There is a group of young musicians raising money for a trip to Scotland.

Let’s meet some of the vendors: “The Other Side Series”; Marie Donais Calder from Alida is the author of this book series.

She writes of her father’s life at the end of WW II. He was stationed in England at the end of the war and was then sent to Germany as a member of the “Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers”.

They were tasked in the rebuilding of Germany.

On strict orders “not” to help people in need he disobeyed those orders and saved an entire family from famine. This truly Canadian story would be a very interesting read and a great add to anyone’s book shelf.

Marlene’s Stained Glass; Marlene is here from Langenburg with her husband. This is her second year attending this show and she says she attends several of these shows a year. She makes many decorative pieces including “screen bugs” and repurposes old glass canning jar lids. She gets her stained glass supplied from Calgary. She claims she is the oldest vendor and challenged me to find a vendor that is older.

Rada Knives; Marg Walker is here for her sixth year. She is selling knives made from planes from a decommissioned aircraft maintenance base in Iowa.

The base was sold to a family at the end of WW II with the promise of a renewed contract for service, but was declined by the US government.

The small community saw all the jobs lost, so the people who bought it decided to make potato peelers and paring knives out of the old aircraft metal. They were able to provide jobs again to the entire town.

Wood Made Beautiful; This is Don and Marion Evans’ first ever attendance at a craft and trade show. They have been crafting their wooden bowls, cutting boards and pens for ten years.

I questioned them on how they liked the experience and Don replied “really enjoying the people” and “we are really impressed with the organization. www.garlic.ca Kevin and Caroline Puffalt are from Kipling where they grow around 50 different varieties of

garlic. They sell the bulbs and seeds, as well they make jelly, powder, and “pickled garlic scape” which are made from the garlic stems. This is their fifth show and they say they look forward to returning again next year.

Touch of Elegance; Roberta Johnston is a rep from Regina and is selling home accents made of lace and linen. They are from Laurie Anne’s Victorian Lace and Linens of Kamloops BC. They are colourful and would look great in any home.

Stitch Collection; These three ladies are selling handmade doll clothes and accessories.

They are a first time vendor here and they have been going to craft and trade shows for 35 years.

They are very impressed with the organization and set up. They claim it is a busy day, “people are buying.”

Sharon Pillar is from Regina, Sandra Steininger and Kathy Zerr have travelled here from Yorkton.

Fancy Alpaca; This company is owned by Krista Seibel who has her mom, Joan, tending to business today. She is selling clothing that is handmade in Ecuador. They are partnered with “Cecilia Rivadeneira” foundation. The foundation gives ten percent of profits to support children with cancer in Ecuador.

Cocapa; Jan Rutten is a first year vendor here and has been crafting her wares for two years. She produces pictures that would look great in any home.

These “beach glass” creations are made from stones and glass that come from Mexico. She also receives materials garnered from friends coming from Thailand, Florida and Cozumel.

The Arcola Craft and Trade Show is very well attended. It has an international flavour that is representative of the ingenuity of some very creative and thoughtful people. This is a can’t miss event and should be noted on everyone’s calendar each fall.

Sask. wary of Bernier vote split

By Murray Mandryk One might wonder what the Saskatchewan Party’s first general election 20 years ago this month has to with today’s federal election.

Well, there’s one big lesson learned applicable to today, but let’s first revisit that 1999 election for those who have forgotten or are too young to remember.

It was called in early August for Sept. 7, what was seen as an attempt by the then-Roy Romanow government to make it as difficult as possible for farmers to vote.

During the previous general election in 1995, the NDP had loss most if its rural base it established during the 1991 election that ousted Grant Devine’s Progressives from office.

Frankly, the NDP might have likely lost every rural seat in 1995, were it not for Liberal and the Progressive Conservative candidates splitting votes in many ridings in that particular election.

This takes us to what may be similarities with today’s federal campaign where splitting votes among somewhat similar parties is an issue. It’s actually been an issue in Canada decades.

Two decades ago, the vote-splitting problem was more of a problem for the right.

The Jean Chretien Liberals benefitted from the split between the Preston Manning’s Reform Party and what was left of the Progressive Conservatives in the aftermath of Brian Mulroney government.

But after Reformers and Progressive Conservatives united, they thrived under the leadership of Stephen Harper. Suddenly, it was the Green Party, NDP and Liberals duking it out for the left- and leftcentre vote.

There remains a left-splitting dynamic in this election and one big story will be how many votes Greens and New Democrats will take from the Liberals.

But what may be as intriguing is vote splitting between Maxime Bernier’s PPC and Andrew Scheer’s CPC . For the first time in more than a decade, forcing Conservatives to revisit the problems of a split vote.

However, it’s less of problem here in Saskatchewan for a couple reasons.

Scheer’s Conservatives will take the vast majority of Saskatchewan’s 14 federal ridings because their rural support is strong.

By virtue of emerging from old Progressive Conservatives and Reformers, Saskatchewan’s Conservative candidates have a solid a base of support as any candidates in the country.

So solid is Conservative support here, most if its candidate could even afford to have a few thousand votes drained off to the local PPC and feel no ill political effects.

However, there is likely another reason why more right-wing conservative-minded supporters in Saskatchewan are staying home with the Conservatives, even though Bernier’s view that supply management must end, immigration and refugees and scientifically proven manmade global warming is not having a significant impact could very well be more aliened with their thinking.

Saskatchewan Conservatives, both right and centre right, are well aware of what happened federally prior to Harper when their allegiances were split between two federal parties.

And they are certainly aware of what happened in Saskatchewan prior to the right being united under the Sask. Party.

It is political lore in this province that the CCF/ NDP would form government with less than 50 per cent of the popular vote because Liberals and Progressive Conservatives would split vote.

That, however, changed in 1999 with the Sask.

Party’s first general election, one in which they almost won government.

However, Saskatchewan only accounts for 4.1 per cent of the current 338 seats in this country.

Vote splitting between the PPC and CPC elsewhere in the country may be an issue, especially where Conservative candidate are in close races to knock off Liberals and wrestle power away from Justin Trudeau.

Losing right-wing votes to the PPC may make a difference in some Ontario seats.

But here in Saskatchewan, conservatives seem well versed in their own political history.

Putting people in the same box The box sat in the computer room for weeks. Inside was a collection of paper to shred and items that needed a place to be stored.

I looked at it every day but always found a reason not to deal with it. I stepped over and around the box. I moved it out of the way several times. When a search for something took me to the box, I My Outlook finally did what I had long put off Shelley Luedtke and after taking care of it questioned why I hadn’t done it weeks earlier.

Being a procrastinator occasionally is nothing new. Ancient Greeks described the behavior as akrasia; the state of acting against your own better judgment. It’s when you do one thing when you know you need to be doing something else. Certainly it’s not uncommon to put off tasks we may not like, but it seems we are also increasingly putting off the things we enjoy. And it’s causing disappointment and frustration for the people in our lives.

More and more of us are saying we will do something, but then failing on the follow through. A worrisome trend is that we are dealing with people the same way we approach that box of stuff. We’re treating it as unimportant—something to get to…at some point.

The average American fails to show up to 46% of the events they said they would attend. The excuses used most often include being too tired, a change of heart, or having gotten a better offer. Surely Canadians do better, right? Well, a few instances over the last few weeks makes me wonder.

A young man took to a radio show to talk about a ball game he was trying to put together. He formed a group on social media and 22 people said they would be there. Plans for the game went ahead. So what happened? On the day, only 10 showed up. Then again, two million committed on that same platform to show up at Area 51 last Friday. About 100 did. Of course that event wasn’t taken seriously by most, but when it comes to family and friends we seem to be

getting just as flippant.

A newlywed was more than a little unhappy when there were 18 no-shows to her wedding; not people who didn’t RSVP (although those numbers are rising too), but people who indicated they were coming and simply didn’t show up. She received feedback from other newly married couples who said they experienced something very similar.

Then a few days ago I was talking with a lady who echoed something we are hearing more and more; “Why can’t people show up and do what they tell me they’re going to do?”

For almost two decades we have been cautioned about this increase in flaking—the characterization of people who don’t follow through on what they commit to. They’re described as fickle, unreliable and ones who can’t get things done, or show up when they say they will.

The events people are most likely to flake on include birthday parties, family gatherings, and weddings. They make it known they intend to go, but then fail to show up. Whether they realize it or not, there is a cost. Two-thirds of people say they have stopped inviting certain people to anything because they always bail at the last minute, and 35% acknowledge their flaking habit has caused problems with a friend.

Charles Dickens once said, “My advice is to never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time.” I wonder if things other than time are also at risk of getting stolen, simply because we’re not doing the follow through the way we need to. Not only are we being robbed of things like contentment, fulfillment and accomplishment, but even more importantly, we are being robbed of friendships, relationships and family bonds, all because it’s become too much of a bother to follow through on a commitment.

We need to do better than shrug our shoulders and say it’s just a sign of the times. The price is too high. It’s time to start expecting more of each other—and more of ourselves. The box of paper isn’t going anywhere. The same can’t be said of the people who matter. That’s my outlook.

Signs of heartworm disease in dogs

Heartworms are parasites that are transmitted to dogs by mosquitoes. If left untreated, they can cause severely debilitating symptoms or even death.

Here are some signs of heartworm disease to look out for.

• Persistent cough and difficulty breathing. Heartworms can make their way to Fido’s lungs and surrounding veins, making your dog work harder to get the necessary oxygen.

•

Lethargy and sleeping

more than usual. Animals with heartworm disease are weakened and often have a hard time finding the energy for their regular activities.

• Decreased appetite and weight loss. As heartworms mature and make their way to the heart and lungs, your dog may lose interest in eating and lose weight as a result. This may cause their ribs and chest to protrude.

• Caval syndrome.

Heartworm disease can cause blockages of blood

to the heart, resulting in sudden collapse or death.

The warning signs of caval syndrome are laboured breathing, pale gums and either dark and bloody or coffee-coloured urine.

Your pooch may not show any signs of having heartworms until the infestation is severe. Prevention is therefore of the utmost importance. Veterinarians recommend getting your dog tested for heartworms once a year and administering preventive medication once a month.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • Last week the Prime Minister was in Saskatoon and I went up to assist. For those that have read previous articles you may remember I do VIP on the side. The Prime Minister has his full time detail and we take care of the extra security.

• The public sure can be rude. I was called all kinds of names just for doing my job. Nothing original, or memorable, but let us just say profanity was a common theme.

• I can tell you I did learn something though.

Those motorized wheel chairs are heavy and they can turn real quick. I was standing in my static position as people were slowly moving into the event and in the crowd there was an individual in a motorized wheel chair. It was very crowded and before I knew it this individual had run over my feet and

before I could move they spun their motorized chair around to see what they had run over and they got me again. I think they did it deliberately being I was not wearing a red tie and it was a Liberal event.

• While driving to Saskatoon I stopped an individual who was speeding and stated they needed to go to the washroom really bad. I followed them to the nearby gas station and waited for their return and provided them a reduced ticket. They expected more and advised they would get a Doctors note saying they had abdominal issues. I advised I would be more than happy and go to Court and explain the actual speed and fine they should have received. They were not very happy with me and when I left they were crying being they could not afford the ticket.

I thought I felt a twinge of guilt until I realized it was a hunger pain and stopped shortly afterward for breakfast in Regina.

• As for what happened in the Carlyle area I can state that things kept happening and we were kept busy.

• We are back to normal and getting 911 miss dials. It was a good run while it lasted but everything ends sooner than later. We only had 3 false alarms which if nothing else gets us out patrolling to the area of the alarm if we have time and resources.

• Two calls of intoxicated individuals causing problems resulted in the RCMP giving a ride to a sober person to another residence and making extensive patrols for another suspect. On another occasion the person passed out before the arrival of the Police and the occupants no longer wanted our assistance.

• It is unfortunate that addictions and mental health issues result in charges and gaol sentences.

It is not our desire to put individuals in gaol, it is our desire to make our community safer and unfortunately some times gaol is best for everyone concerned.

• If you are victim of theft please call us. However, if you call us 2 weeks after the fact there is not much we can do.

• We conducted another threat investigation which was more rudeness than anything. Remember, solve your problems quickly and block those callers.

• We received a call regarding concerns over a possible cannabis grow involving youth and a teenager that might be using in front of the younger children in the residence. Although we suspect everything provided us was true we were unable to locate the cannabis or prove that it was being used around children. Social Services assisted with our investigation.

• So your vehicle has a loud muffler and you think it is cool. Well it sure attracts the attention of those around you. Now if they don’t like the noise they may call the police and when we find your vehicle needs to have a block of wood put behind the wheel to stop it from rolling backwards and it does not have insurance......much paper was issued. Remember you attract attention it might not be the attention you want. I almost forgot. The driver was also arrested for driving while prohibited under the Criminal Code.

• It is important to always have a licence plate on your vehicle. It is even more important that the plate is valid and belongs to you. This vehicle was seized being it was the second time the operator drove without insurance without the last 12 months, and was caught. We know they were driving more often than that.

• If you have an argument with your spouse or your friend and you drive away drunk we will likely find out. Unfortunately we were unable to make any arrests, but we sure tried.

• We issued approximately 40 tickets and 50 written warnings over the past 8 days.

• Tickets were issued for drive with undue care and attention - $280, have or consume liquor in a vehicle - $360, drive a motor vehicle without a licence - $150, no insurance - $580, fail to produce registration - $100, fail to stop at stop sign - $230, fail to wear seatbelt - $175, drive vehicle with passenger under 7 no properly secured - $175, fail to produce registration - $100, use or permit to use wrong licence plates - $175, obstructed licence plate - $150, drive while suspended - (court), fail to maintain a daily log - $150 and most expensive speeding tickets were for exceeding 60 km/hr when passing an emergency vehicle - $298, exceeding speed limit in a school zone $326 and $350 and speeding $300 • Warnings were issued for no insurance, stop sign, hold more than one drivers licence, speeding, inadequate headlamps, fail to display licence plate, tail light fail to emit red light, obstructed licence plate, fail to comply with licence endorsement, fail to produce drivers licence, fail to wear seatbelt, cell phone, inadequate licence plate lights, and fail to produce registration.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate brakes, inadequate muffler, inadequate windshield, inadequate day time running lights, remove window tint, inadequate rear tire tread, inadequate mudflaps, and inadequate tail lights.

Ms. Kurup’s Law 30 class visited the Saskatchewan courts and the Legislative Building last week.

The students witnessed trials and learnt about the judicial system in Canada. They also learnt about the roles of people in a court house. It was also interesting to learn the history of the Legislative buildings and Sir Walter Scott’s vision for Saskatchewan.

The walls of the building came from Italy. The floor came from Vermont and the green pillars came from Cyprus. The library had newspapers from all the towns of Saskatchewan. Students were glad to see the Observer on the shelf. Here is an opportunity for a treasure hunt. In 2012 Terri Fidelak, artist in residence at the Legislative building, polished 100 blocks of Tyndall stone and personally hid them all over the province. The idea is that the lucky few who find the stones will have received a gift to the future: Fidelak’s representation of Saskatchewan’s dreams for the future. The engraved message will also invite people to return the stone to the Legislature - a process which will likely take decades to fully complete. The students scanned through 45+ stones that were already returned and found that the stone from Carlyle is not returned yet. Hint: look in provincial parks, small town communities, and places with historical meaning.

The high school is doing the community birthday calendar again this year. They are $20.00 / calendar. The funds from this endeavor will be used the fund “out of classroom” learning for the students.

Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her

first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools.

Picture Day is October 3.

Election candidates begin campaigns - Liberals and NDP still looking for candidates

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury The federal election campaigning is underway, and that means the candidates who have been nominated in Souris-Moose Mountain are out looking to win the public’s support.

The election writ was dropped on Sept. 11, launching a 40-day campaign that will culminate with the election on Oct. 21.

Four candidates have already entered the field: Robert Kitchen of the Conservative Party, Phil Zajac of the People’s Party of Canada, Judy Mergel of the Green Party of Canada and Travis Patron of the Canadian Nationalist Party.

Kitchen, who resides in Estevan, won the SourisMoose Mountain constituency in the 2015 federal election, was nominated as the Conservative candidate nearly two years ago. Since then, he has been meeting with constituents about their concerns and bringing those issues to Ottawa.

It was good to have a head start on the field, but he doesn’t take it for granted.

“You build on it time after time after time, and make certain that we’re building on it, and again, it’s a learning game, and we continue to learn and I’m continuing to learn,” said Kitchen.

Prior to the election being called, and since the campaign started, Kitchen and his team have been lining up candidates. They have a campaign office open in Estevan – the only office they intend to have.

A grand opening was held on Sunday.

“We’re getting out and getting signs up, and getting people who are volunteers, because lots of people have been coming to step forward as volunteers, in Weyburn, in Estevan, in Moosomin and throughout the whole riding,” he said.

It is a big challenge to reach every community in the Souris-Moose Mountain riding, which is 43,000 square kilometres.

As for the federal results, in order for the Tories to regain power, Kitchen said the party will have to help Canadians get ahead by eliminating the federal carbon tax and bringing in other measures.

Kitchen was expecting an election to be called on a Sunday, either Sept. 8 or 15. Federal elections are traditionally called on Sundays, and Sept. 15 would have been the last possible date for the election.

He criticized Justin Trudeau on his decision to call the election on the anniversary of the Sept.

11 terrorist attacks in the U.S.

Phil Zajac Phil Zajac, who also is from Estevan, was acclaimed as the People’s Party of Canada’s candidate in the spring. He brought party leader Maxime Bernier to the riding in July, and then attended the party’s first-ever national convention in August.

“We learned a lot about campaigning and how to prepare and what to do, and when you live in a big district like Souris-Moose Mountain, it’s a lot of ground to cover,” said Zajac.

It’s going to take a lot of hard work in the next few weeks to win the constituency.

Zajac ran for the Conservative Party nomination in 2014, eventually losing to Kitchen, and said that experience taught him a lot.

He’s looking forward to door-knocking, reaching out to people and presenting the party’s policies to inform the public about what they have to offer.

Zajac will also have a campaign office in downtown Estevan on Fourth Street.

“It gives people a place to go if they have some questions. They can come right to our office.”

As a new party, Zajac said the People’s Party has a lot of policies that people will be excited about.

“A lot of people know there’s another party out there, but they’re not sure about the People’s Party of Canada or exactly what they stand for, so that’s what the candidate’s job is now is to bring that forward in as many different avenues as possible.”

Zajac would like to have Bernier back in the constituency during the campaign. Bernier really enjoyed his visit here in Estevan in July, and enjoyed his tour of the carbon capture and storage facility.

“The Greens are a unique grassroots organization that I’m proud to be part of,” she said. “Our vision for Canada promises a future where no one will be left out or left behind.”

“Three or four days is how close we came,” he said.

As of Monday night, the Liberal Party and the New Democratic Party had yet to find their candidates for Souris-Moose Mountain.

The Green Party of Canada announced its candidate for Souris-Moose Mountain last week.

Judy Mergel, who resides in the Wood Mountain area, wasn’t able to comment for this story, but did send a news release to the Mercury discussing her candidacy.

Previously a candidate for the party in the Wood River constituency in the last provincial election, Mergel said in a news release that she was inspired to do more after hearing federal Green Party leader Elizabeth May speak at the University of Regina this past spring.

“It’s no secret that the Greens don’t generally fare well at the ballot box in ‘oil & gas’ country,” Mergel wrote in the news release. “However, the Greens believe in a gradual transition to renewable energy and will support large-scale retraining.”

Although the party is universally equated with the environment, she said their platform addresses much more and will be visible on the Green Party’s website once the platform is launched.

Patron, who resides in the Redvers area, is the leader of the Nationalist Party. As of Monday evening, he was their lone candidate. They have put out a call for candidates, and he said they do have some who are interested.

It’s too early to say how many they would have at this point, and they want people who have demonstrated a commitment to the party and understand its policies.

He is looking forward to getting out to the various municipalities in Souris-Moose Mountain, passing out pamphlets and gaining feedback, and incorporating those ideas into the party’s platform.

He noted that if the election been called on Sept.

8 instead of Sept. 11, the party would not have been allowed to field candidates for the election, since the party was recently approved by Elections Canada.

To top it off, our son was on some days off from his duties on a Coast Guard ship and a nephew and wife who’ve recently moved here also joined us. You would have enjoyed the laughter and excitement that was part of our weekly family supper.

On the more sobering side, I am in the midst of a number of medical tests and although I am receiving wonderful care and support from friends, family and medical staff, it’s always a trying time: “Will it prove to be nothing serious or won’t it?” As much as one knows the peace and comfort of God’s strength, we humans remain that, simply humans.

But even that reality is filled with conundrums.

When asked by a friend about my health, I noted some of my concerns and she then told me of several ladies who were enduring terrible hardship and abuse. Talk about putting things into perspective!

I realized that I had everything as good as it could humanly be: wonderful and free medical care, a loving husband, family and friends, and best of all, the prospect of an eternity with Christ if that should be the result of all this. Even our wonderful family week pales in comparison.

While heaven is a wonderful prospect, let’s tell those many around us who are facing terrible situations without knowing that God is there to sustain us, “A very present help in time of trouble….” (Psalm 46:1)

FoodWorld welcomes new owners

After 38 years in the grocery business, Bev and Rod Lougheed are going to enjoy some much deserved free time. Serving the community of Arcola for 26 years and then an additional 12 years in Carlyle, as owners of the Carlyle FoodWorld, they will be turning over the reins to new owners beginning

September 30, 2019.

While they were not actively looking to sell the business, the Lougheeds had let their wholesalers know that if the right people came along, they would consider it.

Meanwhile, Jin Lee and his wife Ellie Ahn were actively seeking a place to put down roots and establish themselves in business. Jin Lee is an accountant by trade and emigrated to Cal-

Jin Lee owned a small grocery store but the community was shrinking, with an aging population and few young families. Thus began a search that covered British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan as the couple looked for a healthy, vibrant community, where they could settle in and raise a family while growing their business.

While visiting Saskatchewan, they came to Carlyle and said that when they drove down the Main Street, looking at the businesses, they knew that this was the place they wanted to live. Perhaps in two to three years, as they grow to know what their customers might like to see added to the store, they will make changes, but for now, they know a good thing when they see it.

As for Bev and Rod Lougheed, they are happy to fade quietly into retirement, know-

ing that they have done their best to provide for their customers in the future, through Jin Lee and Ellie Ahn. The Lougheeds were impressed with the amount of research and the thoughtfulness behind the couple’s decision to choose Carlyle out of the many communities they had explored. Lougheed says he is grate-

ful for the support they have received over their years in Arcola and Carlyle and believes that the business will be in good hands. He hopes that their customers will continue to extend the same loyalty and friendships to the new owners and wishes them success in the future as they build a family, friends and their business in Carlyle.

Selling portraits on Instagram

Jillian Bogan of Saskatoon has been selling portraits for 10 years, starting in high school.

She has been working in acrylics and oils, while working for the Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. During her spare time, she worked on portraits, posting photos on her Instagram account.

The exposure has helped her gain exposure as an artist, so much so that she decided to take the leap and devote all of her time to painting just over a year ago.

This summer was her first time taking part in the MMPP Artist Colony Retreat.

Sheltering riders from the NKCR

By Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net For three years, the Currie family has welcomed riders from the National Kids Cancer Ride into their homes and their hearts.

On Monday September 9, they welcomed 40 people into their home as the rainy weather put a damper on the ride and the riders, providing shelter, showers and dinner.

Currie said, “It is truly an honour for our family to host these amazing individuals. They use their personal holidays from work to ride across Canada, raising funds to beat Childhood Cancer. It simply amazes me. They are such loving, kind and inspiring that you will ever meet. We have extended our family through the bond that has ben created. We even got to make our American friend, Mike Leiter, who came up to Canada to ride with NKCR in honour of his son, an honorary Canadian.”

The hail adjusters are now in the area doing their job after the storm we had the other week. I am sooo sick of rain and I also know I’m not alone in that feeling – so now can it PLEASE stop. Whoever has left the water tabs on up there – Turn them OFF – please, we have had enough. It will be a while before the guys are out in the fields again, most of the low spots are retaining water now and the ground isn’t soaking up the moisture as it was before. It’s beginning to look like another harvest as we had in 2014 when the grain trucks couldn’t get into the fields. Oh the joys of farming.

Had hoped and thought that the lawn mower had maybe been put away for the season, but nope, had to bring it back out and mow the lawn again.

Hate to mention that word frost, but I’m afraid that one of these nights it will come, can only hope that it will be mild and do no harm.

Boy the leaves on the trees are sure turning to their fall colors, didn’t seem to take them that long this year and the birds are flocking together – does that mean an early winter – hope not, just not ready for the cold weather yet even if at times it has seemed to be too hot out there. Guess we’re just too hard to please.

We have some new residents residing in Alida – Jacob Wiens and Karen Williams who lives on the former Girard acreage; Jonathon and Shaleka Vale who are making their home in the former Marcel Girard house; Dennis and Razelyn Curativo who are residing in the house next door to the Ferriss.

Not a UFO in sight at the Quilt Show

If you have never been a quilter, you may wonder what spaceships have to do with the 17th Annual Quilt Show, held in conjunction with Homespun, at the Memorial Hall in Carlyle on Sept. 21 and 22.

Many “UnFinished Objects” can be found in a quilters stash, most waiting for backing, the final quilting or binding. Thousands of hours and gallons of coffee, I am sure, went into the work displayed for the viewing pleasure of the public.

This reporter was awed by the quality of work and the selection of fabric and colours in every piece. One quilt that caught my eye was entirely hand-quilted, not something that you often see anymore.

Visitors were invited to pick their favourites among the entries in three different categories. The first prize winner of the large quilts went to Terry Whitman of Estevan and Shirley Kelly of Moosomin took second place. Sandy Hassler of Kipling made the favourite lap-size quilt and Lucille Weber of Arcola had the honour of second place. From the small items, Cathy Brown of Carlyle was awarded first place and Christa Marcotte of Estevan, second.

Lawrence Bouchard 1954 - 2019

Lawrence Ralph Bouchard passed away at home on August 24, 2019 at the age of 64.

Lawrence was born in Redvers, Saskatchewan on December 18, 1954 to parents Rose and Cyril Bouchard. He began his young adult life in Saskatchewan with his many brothers and sisters. After graduation and working in the tire business for several years, Lawrence then decided to venture off to Alberta where he began his long and successful career in the oil patch. Lawrence moved the family north to Fort St. John in 1995, where they spent the next 12 years. In 2007 the work had moved back to the Alberta side, so the move to Gordondale happened. He purchased a quarter section of land and built a house. He loved living out in the country and would tell everyone that this is where he would stay.

Along the way, Lawrence had four children, all boys in which he was very proud. Lawrence also spent the last 29 years with his loving wife Denise. Lawrence enjoyed the simple things in life. Spending time with his family was number one on his list. He also enjoyed camping, quadding, and the occasional golf game.

Lawrence is survived by his wife Denise, children Chris, Conrad, Cole (Sydney), and Brandon (Leslie), his beautiful grandchildren Emylie, Nate, Grace, and Abby, as well as many brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.

Lawrence was predeceased by both his parents Rose and Cyril Bouchard, in-laws Doug and Milissa Potter, and Ken Reuer.

A funeral service was held August 31, 2019 at the Bergeron’s Chapel in Dawson Creek, BC with cremation following. Expressions of sympathy may be made by donation to the British Columbia Heart & Stroke Foundation, 200-1212 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC, V6H 3V2.

He will forever be missed and loved.

Dreaming of growing the Artist Colony

Jacqui Beckett of Moosomin has been an artist for most of her adult life. A retired teacher, she uses water colours, acrylics and paints on silk fabric, along with teaching classes in silk painting.

Beckett works with Jerri Laird, Holly Dauvin and Ken Frederickson to promote the Artist Colony and it is their combined dream to build a teaching building, along with more cottages. She has taken part in both the Assiniboia Retreat and the Shellmouth retreat near Russell, MB. This year she is working on canvases painted with red, then blending over top to warm the colours of the painting, leaving pops of red as a part of the scene.

She has taken only one university art class and a few workshops and belongs to the Hamiota Art club. Pottery is one of her most recent ventures and she is excited to see where it will take her.

Maryfield Villa News Submitted by Janet Mark Welcome to Joan Colborn and Delores Ries, two of the ten newcomers to the Villa in the past year. Thank you to Joyce Gillies, who covered two birthday parties and Circle of Friends. We all agreed Autumn is beautiful with its variety of colors and fields ready for harvest.

Eunice enjoyed especially driving along the Valley. Clifford spoke of the satisfaction of harvesting grain, digging and picking vegetables and knowing the homemakers had an abundance of food. Marie wanted a clean, tidy yard, getting read for winter. For Ralph Burke it was pitching sheaves into the machine; Ruth Dennis, driving truck for two combines; for Mary, canning season. Ralph: “The satisfying feeling when all was safely gathered in.” Marianne, “Food and veggies, and pumpkin pie.

The Villa Guild served two birthdays this month. Mariann’s was the 15th; Mildred Wilson’s on the 22nd.

A whole page of visitors signed the guest book during the last two weeks.

Gordon and Marilyn Kliever held MAGC church service, and Harold and Cheryl Friesen made music for hymnsing.

Keeping track of international trade

By Calvin Daniels In a world where international trade is critical to national economies, particularly true here in Canada, keeping track of changes on the other side of the planet that can impact things here, is frankly a near full-time undertaking.

That is particularly true in terms of agriculture as there are so many things that can send a ripple through markets, and that can impact the future face of trade in farm products.

We tend to appreciate that weather has that impact, a drought, or excessive rain, or early frost in a grain growing region somewhere in the world sends a definite message to the farm marketplace.

Ditto, when a key trade country imposes new trade barriers. We have seen that in Canada throughout 2019 with the impact rules changes imposed in China have had.

But less easy to track, by individuals at least, are the internal regulation changes in key countries which will change how agriculture operates there.

So, it was enlightening to read a recent Western Producer article about proposed changes to how things work in terms of farmland ownership in Ukraine.

Ukraine was once a major exporter of grain in Europe, and while the efficiencies of the system dropped under the Communist regime, the productive land remains. The hurdle post the break up of the USSR has been how to modernize agriculture in a country stuck decades in the past in terms of farm

techniques and technology on much of the land?

In the article Reuters reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has ordered his government to submit a draft law for farmland reform by the beginning of October.

That is a huge step forward for farming in Ukraine if it transpires.

The article suggests state-owned land is expected to be privatized starting in April and the longstanding ban on the sale of privatized land will be lifted.

“Ukraine’s private farmland is owned in 6.4-acre plots by about 6.4 million people. Owners are forbidden from selling the land but can lease it out,” details the article.

“Much of that land is being leased by agricultural holding firms called agroholdings, which are large corporate entities that operate a minimum of 25,000 acres of land. They are vertically integrated enterprises that do everything from producing farm inputs to exporting grain.

“Some agroholding farms have up to 1,000 lease agreements.”

It’s not hard, from a Canadian perspective, to see the potential efficiencies to be gained by larger, owned holdings, especially in dealing with financial institutions.

While any changes in Ukraine will not come overnight, a new course could certainly make them a far more significant competitor for trade moving forward.

Pause for Reflection

My brother from my other mother There are stories about the empty chair set for Elijah at the Passover table. A Christian version suggests that the extra place is set in case Jesus comes to visit. It happened that a stranger did come one day. Confusion resulted. Someone tried to seat the visitor, but the host objected, “It must remain empty!”

How seriously do we take messages from scripture as they relate to things familiar to us? Our relationship with God is one such area. The question arises, is Jesus our brother?

I have more recently been thinking about my extra brother, from my other Mother Mary. I have seven brothers among my siblings, and as I say my morning prayers, I look at the pictures of siblings who have been born to eternal life.

Among the pictures I have placed one of Jesus.

As I look at my family members in the Communion of Saints pictured there, I often ask for intercessions with my daily problems and struggles. How powerful it is to have Jesus among them in my morning prayers.

Do we feel comfortable calling Jesus our Brother? We should. The purpose of this column is to make us more ready to accept that Jesus is our brother and all that this implies.

Scripture tells us that God predestined us for adoption as His sons through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will. (Ephesians 1:5).

I love the following definition of adoption: A child asks her mother, “What does it mean that I am adopted?”

The mother replies, “That means you grew in my heart instead of my tummy.”

Certainly we have grown in God’s heart! A writer for e6ministries.org put it this way: “Ever since I was young, I wanted a brother. Older or younger, it didn’t really matter …. There is a strong bond between brothers. They are there for each other in times of trouble …. Brothers can be counted on to come through, to make sacrifices and to love unconditionally. “someone having my back no matter what the situation. There has always been something deep

inside me that desired a brother, someone of my own blood who would be willing to stand by me, and me with him, through anything that life would bring our way.

“But wait a second, I already have this brother, the one I have desired throughout my life. He has been there the entire time waiting for me to reach out to Him, to surrender and give my life to Him. His name is Jesus.”

The article goes on to explain why this is true.

The bible tells us in Hebrews 2:11, “For the one who sanctifies, and the ones who are sanctified, are of the

same stock; that is why he openly calls them brother.” And Matthew 12:50 says, “Anyone who does the will of my Father in Heaven, he is my brother and sister and mother.”

God chose us long ago “to become true images of his Son, so that his Son might be the eldest of many brothers [In scripture this generic term also means sisters].” (Romans 8:29). He called us, justified us and shared his glory with us.

Following that call gives us the power to be children of God. “But to all who did accept him he gave the power to become children of God.” (John 1:12).

Sports Arena gets a facelift

The Carlyle Sports Arena received a much-needed facelift, thanks to the hard work of volunteers and members of the Rink Board.

Last season the board raffled off a sideby-side and some of the funds raised were used to purchase the materials for the facelift. Insulation was installed on the cinder block of the main building and then covered with tin. A new energy efficient window

was installed and the addition was also tinned to match the main building. The addition did not require insulation on the outside, as it had been added inside before the new dressing rooms were built a few years ago.

Parking stops were also installed to help prevent vehicles from parking too close to the building and help with delineating the parking stalls during the winter.

Parking signage and new entry doors will soon be

installed, with windows for increased visibility and safety of visitors entering or exiting the building.

Littlehawk/ Gibsons graciously donated their time and equipment to steam clean the kitchen ventilation hood system, equipment along with the boards and walls on the ice surface. A&W also donated equipment to the kitchen.

The community is blessed to have so many people and businesses

who are willing to give of their time, talents and money to maintain and improve this valuable asset. At a time when many communities are losing their rinks, Carlyle is lucky to have a healthy, vibrant hockey and figure skating community to keep our children and adults entertained during the winter and to be able to host events such as Homespun, as well as grads, weddings and other events.
