Alameda coach and principal recognized

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury Sports and education in Alameda have been a big part of Jeff Cameron’s life for more than 30 years.

Cameron, who retired as the Alameda School principal at the end of the 2018-19 school year, was recently presented with the Len William Memorial Award by the South East Cornerstone Public School Division for service, dedication to coaching and working with extracurricular and intramural sports.

It’s named in honour of Williams, a long-time educator and sports enthusiast from Weyburn who died in 2014.

Cameron started his teaching career in northern Saskatchewan in 1986, and came to Alameda in 1988 because it was close to his hometown of Pierson, Man. “I was involved with the coaching of all the

sports at the school, and I continued with that until I retired this past June,” Cameron told Lifestyles.

In a typical year, he coached golf, cross-country, volleyball, curling, badminton, and track and field. He likely would have guided the basketball team, too, but the school’s gym wasn’t big enough for that sport.

He often coached three or four volleyball teams from the school.

In the community, he coached hockey and softball, and did some coaching in Estevan for a few years.

Sports are a great way to learn life skills, he said.

“I think it helps you to be a better human being. I like kids to be active. If you look at all of the data, we have such a high rate of diabetes and the cancers and so forth, and all of the articles … that you read, would point to a healthier diet and more activity to re-

duce the risk of getting some of these things,” he said.

When he grew up, he played all kinds of sports, and met people and made lifelong friendships.

“I just hope that I can pass some of that on, and it has helped where for some kids sports have gone on to help them with their education,” said Cameron.

While it’s a nice way to wrap up his teaching career, and he’s humbled by the recognition, Cameron said he’s more concerned about who he was as a teacher, an administrator and a person.

“People forget what they say and they forget what you do, but they never forget how you make them feel,” said Cameron. “That’s the biggest thing for me. I just hope I made an impact on how people feel about themselves, about their friends and about their families, and to interact more.”

Barbecue welcomes students back to school in Stoughton

On Sept. 5 the weather provided a wonderful backdrop as students and parents gathered at the Stoughton School for their annual back-to-school barbecue. The evening was well attended, combining the back-toschool celebration and an open house, showcasing the Stoughton Playschool, Stoughton Library, Early Learning and Care, guitar and fiddle teachers Donna and Morgan Turk, Stoughton Early Learning Facility (SELF), Girl Guides, Horse Club, Crossroads Multiple

4-H Club, Stoughton Swimming Pool and the School Community Council.

The SCC consists of staff and student representation, community members, and parents, meeting about once a month throughout the school year to identify needs within the school and ways to meet those needs. They fundraise to add to the school, acknowledging and encouraging their students and staff along the way.

Royal Tank Cleaners sponsored the burgers, while the Stoughton Credit Union was a food sponsor. There were many donations of raffle prizes from

Election an opportunity for a meaningful conversation

By Murray Mandryk On the eve of last week’s election call, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe talked about this campaign as one that will either mend or further tear the fabric of our nation.

“This is the crossroads that we are faced with this fall: Do we want to move forward as these regions of Canada, bickering amongst one another talking about who’s closer with the federal government?” he told the Regina Leader-Post’s Arthur White-Crummey.

“Or do we want to actually set our differences aside and move forward as one strong nation, as a nation that is really proud of one another and proud of all our regions of Canada and how we create our wealth?”

In a federal election campaign expected to be nasty, made much more so by the echo chamber that is social media, Moe’s words should resonate with us all.

Polite political conversation has often ended with “they’re all the same” or “they’re all bad.”

It was always good form for those who subscribed to the bygone notion that religion and politics to provide answers with which all could agree.

Well, in this era of social media, it polite conversation doesn’t much exists anymore.

Tune into FaceBook or Twitter and one quickly discovers no shortage of hardened political opinions that aren’t to be dissuaded by reasoned conversation.

While the Internet and the social media craze it spawned was supposed to be the great democratizer, one obvious problem is the way it seems to confine people to their own silos where they choose to only listen to others who share their views and with whom they always agree.

It’s why they call social media an echo chamber and echo chambers can be a dangerous places when people living in them insist on hearing only what they want hear. It is as unhealthy as allowing your kids to eat only what they want eat.

This takes us back to the bigger issues Moe is talking about during this election campaign, the notion that we are at a crossroads and that we need to set partisanship and personality aside and start thinking about how to build a country.

If ever we needed critical thought and respective, meaningful debate, now would seem to be the time.

This is not say that voters shouldn’t have strong convictions, especially, when it comes to what they think is right for themselves and others in their areas.

In areas like rural Saskatchewan where dwindling town, small city and farming populations are a reality, it’s more important than ever for people to stand up and have their voices heard.

That said, Moe isn’t talking about sacrificing core beliefs this campaign. Or at least, that certainly isn’t what he intends to do.

“I’ll call ‘em as I see ‘em, and the same will hold true through the federal election campaign,” Moe said in the Leader-Post interview.

That said, the Saskatchewan Premier noted there is a need to “recognize provincial plans” including “strong action in our specific regions” on issues like climate change.

Obviously, he was referring to his government’s own opposition to a national carbon tax and how a country can be divided because regions don’t understand each others economic interests.

Surely, this has been one of the true frustrations driving Western alienation the past four years.

But it cuts both ways, requiring those of us out West to understand during this national election campaign that those in other who have their own interests that may be different than our own.

Elections must always be about ideas, some of which you may disagree but all of which deserve to be respectfully heard.

As Moe said, it’s the only way to move forward as stronger nation.

It’s bigger than the tomato I love salsa. I add it to scrambled eggs, wraps and pasta; and when it comes to nachos, the chips and cheese are really just the background to the star of the show: the salsa.

The same goes for spaghetti sauce, ketchup, casseroles and just about anything else that is tomato-based. Love it. But here’s My Outlook the thing: I dislike raw tomatoes.

Shelley Luedtke I mean really, really dislike them.

They will never find a way onto a sandwich and trust me, the first thing I do when getting a burger is remove any tomato slices that might be tucked between the bun and the patty.

I hear people talk about standing in their garden harvesting ripe, juicy tomatoes and biting into them the way they would an apple and I wish I could appreciate it. But I don’t. I have picked, peeled and prepared untold amounts for sauces and salsa but I will never, ever eat a raw tomato.

It turns out I am far from alone in this. Although it may be incomprehensible to some, there are those of us who will consume the cooked product by the bucket but refuse to take a bite of the original ingredient. Scientific, agricultural and food journals have long studied why this may be, determining the antioxidant lycopene may be a factor along with the heating process which changes the tomato’s chemistry. A plant molecular biologist says there are two dozen compounds that relate to the taste of a tomato that apparently some people simply do not respond to very well. I don’t need any research to confirm what I already know. Regardless of how incongruent it may seem, I value tomato products, but not the individual tomato.

Canadians have been launched into another election cycle. We will spend the next month engaging in, or maybe avoiding, the messaging coming our way in pursuit of our vote. Political groups will spend a lot of money and candidates will work hard to get our attention and yet it is likely that only 6 out of 10 of us will choose to participate. Because no matter where any of us sit on the political spectrum,

it’s hard not to be disaffected by the whole thing. If we let it.

To be sure, there are individuals involved whose words and actions have left a bad taste in my mouth.

It is cringe-worthy at times. Disheartening. Yet beyond any particular politician is a political system that, although not without its shortcomings, is one we need to protect. I get it… some people make it really difficult to stay engaged or even muster up enough excitement to care. That’s what makes it all the more important we stay involved and that we proceed headlong into the process, and not turn away.

What does that look like? It’s reading and listening to what candidates have to say. It’s refusing to be sucked in by click bait or allowing ourselves to be taken by sensational comments. It’s making the time and taking the opportunity to ask questions.

It’s about obtaining all of the information and not settling for the soundbite.

In the 24-hour infotainment/entertainment cycle we find ourselves in this may all sound a little boring. But if we don’t take time and put in the effort we are vulnerable to the underhanded and misleading elements of this that cause our disillusionment in the first place.

To be sure there are candidates in this process who you will not like, agree with, trust or support.

Others you will. That is the beauty of this! The whole can really be greater than the sum of its parts—but only…and this is key…if we see ourselves as one of those parts.

Without the (in my estimation) distasteful tomato, there can be no tomato-based sauces or preferred flavor of salsa. Without every single candidate, all of the volunteers, and each and every eligible voter taking part, the process is jeopardized. We may not like or appreciate some of what goes into it, but the end result is worthy of our protection and requires our involvement.

As tempting as it may be to throw up our hands, or toss metaphorical tomatoes in frustration, so much better to put those hands to work and go and mark a ballot.

That’s my outlook.

HEALTH HUB Understanding ADHD: symptoms and treatment Attention deficit hyperactivty disorder (ADHD) affects between six and seven per cent of people aged 18 and under. Despite its prevalence, it remains poorly understood. Here’s what you should know.

Symptoms ADHD is a disorder characterized by a vast array of symptoms. Their type and intensity vary between patients, and distinguishing strong personality traits from symptoms can be difficult. In addition, the attention deficit and hyperactivity-impulsivity aspects of ADHD are separate.

Inattention symptoms include: • Difficulty paying attention to details • Difficulty focusing on and structuring tasks • Tendency to forget things, especially those necessary for completing tasks (e.g. pencils and notebooks) • Short attention span • Easily distracted Hyperactivity and impulsivity symptoms include: • Inability to sit still and frequent squirming or fidgeting • Getting up at inappropriate moments • Talking more than others • Interrupting conversations or intruding • Difficulty waiting for their turn For ADHD to be a con-

cern, a child has to exhibit extreme or disruptive versions of the traits above.

In addition, boys are much more likely to show hyperactivity symptoms than girls.

Remember that while difficulties with social integration and school performance are common indicators, they’re not enough to establish a diagnosis.

Treatment A combination of medication and therapy is the most common treatment for ADHD. Given the high variability in types, there’s no universal treatment plan. \ Since ADHD persists into adulthood in 30 to 50

per cent of cases, promoting long-term management strategies is crucial.

Left untreated, ADHD is associated with poor academic performance, professional difficulties and higher risks for drug use and criminal behaviour.

The incidence of anxiety disorders and depression is also higher in people with ADHD. ADHD can have devastating consequences, and early treatment and management is key to helping those affected lead fulfilling lives. Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • We again lucked out and 911 was not called by mistake. We did, however, have 3 false alarms.

As you can imagine we don’t rush to alarms.

• We assisted several other Detachments and Police Services with serving documents or arresting individuals on their warrants.

• If you think there are more of us around, well there are. Cst. COX joined us from Biggar and Cst. GLASSER from La Loche. They have been an excellent addition to the Traffic Unit and Detachment.

• A prolific offender has recently been released.

This individual is well known for stealing trucks.

I am not saying their behaviour was not modified while they were in the Correctional Facility, however, I am saying you should lock your vehicles.

• I know we can never say it enough, but don’t take a cheque from someone you can’t trust, heck, sometimes you shouldn’t take one from someone you can trust. Our related fraud file was resolved without charges.

• If someone is harassing you via text message or social media, block them. It is the simplest and most successful way to end your grief.

• We had a report of 4 intoxicated teens approximately 20 years old walking on a road. Yup 20 year old teens, I had thought teen only went up to nineteen? We found them and we provided them a ride to a safe location.

• If your child takes your vehicle and they are drunk and you call the Police, but you don’t want us to do anything? Trust me we will come a looking, being we are concerned about the impaired driver. On this occasion we could not find the driver.

Lucky for them, if we did we would have arrested them.

• We have had a couple people come in requesting Peace Bonds. I have never been involved with one being normally once the story is told we have enough to lay Criminal charges and put the other party on conditions of no contact. This is quick, where a Peace Bond is not and requires both sides to go to court and explain why a Peace Bond is necessary. I would suggest that these individuals are just wasting their time and ours.

• In addition, being harassed is not Criminal

unless you fear for your safety, as in life and death or serious injury. Fearing someone is not enough.

Trust me, when my wife is mad I fear her and I may think she is harassing me, but it is not Criminal . . . wait, no I am safe she rarely reads these articles.

• A neighbour dispute continues. Apparently one adult is upset at the children living with the other adult being it is alleged their children had stolen toys. Fear of violence was reported. When we asked if there were any weapons involved we were advised there were no guns but they have some sticks. I am sure we will come back and visit these folks again, especially when they both keep at each other on social media. On a side note, we did not seize any sticks.

• If you are in one province and think you can threaten someone in another province and get away with it you are wrong. It does complicate the investigation slightly, but we will bring you here to be dealt with. We are presently working with Brandon Police Service where we both have a vested interest in the same accused.

• A 12 year old allegedly took a family member’s car. The vehicle was located in another Detachment area and the parents attended and picked up the wayward youth and the vehicle.

• Members responded to a report of younger adults shooting fireworks at each other. The caller was not too concerned about the individuals shooting the fireworks, rather about the fireworks hitting residences and vehicles. We located the individuals and tried to educate them about their lack of judgement. I did say try. All we can do is try.

• A traffic stop was conducted due to an obstructed licence plate. The resulting investigation determined the driver was disqualified and on Probation for which they were charged and the vehicle seized. Now you wonder why we deal with the little things? Here is a perfect example where we deal with a small thing and find so much more.

• So you are in a new relationship and you are well known to the Police in the area you live and choose to move in with your new romantic interest and think nobody will notice. You can’t just move without advising the Police. We will find out. Unfortunately, for one of our new community members they found out love does not trump the Criminal Code and they were charged for breaching their release conditions.

• We have been chasing noisy vehicles and fortunately caught one. Folks just because you can make noise with your vehicle doesn’t make it legal.

• So you think you might be able to get away with using cannabis and driving. One individual found out they were wrong and received a 72-hour suspension.

• With all the rain and the darkness we received several calls about intoxicated individuals on the highways or individuals that people feared may get struck by a vehicle. Patrols were made and we actually found each individual we looked for and provided them safe rides.

• We had a collision with a deer reported. The deer chose to not remain at the scene and give their side of the story.

• We had an individual that attended court and stated to the Judge that the ticket for a cell phone violation showed “None” as the middle name and that was not their middle name. This is automatically filled on the ticket when it is printed. The Judge therefore tossed the ticket. The Member therefore went and re-issued the ticket. Still a win for us but the violator was sure upset. With the assistance of SGI this issue is being rectified.

• We had approximately 25 tickets and 30 warnings written over the last month.

• Tickets were written for no insurance -$580, stop sign -$230, fail to wear a seatbelt - $175, fail to produce registration certificate -$100, drive without a drivers licence $150, use a cell phone - $280, inadequate headlamps - $115, fail to produce drivers licence - $100, cause unnecessary noise with exhaust or muffler - $100, and window tint- $115 and the most expensive moving violation tickets were exceeding speed limit in a school zone - $310, exceed 60 km/hr when passing an emergency vehicle - $318, speeding - $302, $322, $348 and $854. `• Warnings were issued for no drivers licence, no registration, drive with an obstructed plate, fail to produce drivers licence, fail to display licence plate, fail to move to right when approached by an emergency vehicle, fail to wear seatbelt, speeding and fail to stop at stop sign.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate muffler or exhaust, inadequate daytime running lights, inadequate windshield, auxiliary lamp mounted higher than headlights and inadequate mudflaps.

“I am your Father, and I love you,” spoken at the human level is powerful. In a Christmas Prayer of Barry Wyatt Junior we hear: “A long time ago on Christmas Eve, my son said Goodbye. My son did not understand, that his father was there to nurture, love, comfort and to show him forgiveness and [his father was] not a working money machine, that he could lie to and money would come out for cigarettes, drugs and alcohol.”

I was privileged to hear Arnold’s testimony.

It is hard to listen to her story that includes abuse as a child, abortion, alcohol and drug addiction, imprisonment, and all the pain and despair one life can hold. God’s ever present love prevailed in her life and she turned back to the church and sacraments.

A retreat master asked, “Imagine Jesus is in front of you.” Then from out of nowhere Arnold heard the words, “I am your Father and I love you.” Shock, tears and disbelief followed.

At the Baptism of Jesus in Mark 1:1 we hear the Father say, “You are my son, the beloved; my favour rests on you.”

At the Transfiguration before Jesus faces the events in Jerusalem the Father again manifests his love of Jesus and empowers Him in His upcoming mission.

In the same way God loves us and empowers us. In Galatians 2:20, the Apostle Paul says, “It is no longer I that lives, it is Christ that lives in me”. Christ lives in us and the love that the Father has for Jesus is exactly the same love He has for you and me.

Mark Monday, Oct. 21 on your calendar

By Calvin Daniels While we all knew it was coming, we now have an official date to go to the polls to elect our federal representatives.

To start, we all need to mark Monday, Oct. 21 on our calendars and make sure we all take the opportunity a free democracy offers us by casting a vote.

The trend toward less and less eligible voters actually casting ballots is disheartening when many in the world can only dream of the freedom to do so living under various stripes of dictatorship preventing the simple act of putting an ‘X’ on a ballot.

As for the farm sector, the issue over the next month is how to put the sector into the mix as an issue candidates truly care about.

Here on the Canadian Prairies candidates are going to nod knowingly when asked about the importance of the sector, but does their concern, or ours as voters play at the table when the federal parties sit down to develop policy?

The problem for parties is many when it comes to how much focus to put on agriculture, starting with the limited number of seats where farmers are a significant portion of voters. We might like to hope that such things are not a factor, but the truth of one vote per person puts greater importance on urban constituencies than those that are mostly farm/rural.

It becomes ever harder to sell major agriculture investments to city-dwelling voters who have limited understanding of farming, or its importance to the greater Canadian economy.

Then within the farm sector there is the problem of finding policy that covers most producers.

Frankly, I’m just sick of hearing about fighting, wars, and now, at least here in Canada, sniping by politicians as our federal election comes up in October. Wouldn’t it be lovely if there was a regular broadcast of all things positive, uplifting and encouraging?

I’ve been thinking a lot about what I or we can do to contribute to peace in our world, especially considering there’s contention everywhere. No matter how lovely and peaceful a community seems to be (and ours is a great example of that!), there are still disagreements and undercurrents. Although it’s a given that no one person on earth is able to resolve earth’s conundrums, I believe we’re all responsible to do what we can, where we can and how we can.

Barb Reid was invited to take part in the MMPP Artist Colony Retreat by her sister and her niece, who also attended this year. After doing crafty painting for five years she started working with alcohol ink three years ago and has revisited it during her time at the retreat.

She works on tiles and non-porous surfaces, using alcohol ink and 90% alcohol. Wetting the brush with the alcohol, she touches the ink and using compressed air or her own breath, she blows the ink around the surface, creating beautiful images. If the ink dries, she simply adds more alcohol. While Reid makes it look so effortless, the other artist’s assured me that is not the case.

it comes to world peace, probably my ability to influence things depends mostly on prayer. Nationally, I have the privilege and the responsibility to get out and vote. No matter one’s choice of the issues, the party or the individuals running for office, we need to let our voices be heard. Locally, it’s easy to stand back and complain when decisions are made with which we don’t agree but let’s commit to getting involved where we can and offer support to leadership in more copious amounts than the criticism we offer. Often, however, the hardest part is cultivating positive relationships with those within our circle of individuals and neighbourhoods. It’s not always easy or even possible but try to live at peace with those around us.

What is good news for a wheat or canola producer on the Prairies doesn’t necessarily resonate with a potato producer in Prince Edward Island, or a wine producer in British Columbia.

And of course the opposite is also true. Support for fish farmers or a flower grower is not likely to be seen as particularly good news in Saskatchewan, even though it would be support for the broader sector of agriculture.

Brenda Blackburn of Estevan is a second-generation artist. After teaching art to middle years students for 32 years, she retired and started painting with acrylics two and a half years ago.

She has moved onto portraits in pencil and then pencil crayon.

This was her first year at the Moose Mountain Provincial Park Artist Colony Retreat, and she is looking forward to returning.

New Medium a stretch for Ken Frederickson

One of the best parts of the Artist Colony Retreat is the opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone and try new mediums and techniques.

This past August, Ken Frederickson, an accomplished Bronze Sculptor, tried his hand at creating a silk cowboy scarf. The silk square features a hand-drawn sketch of a moose in one corner and a deer in the opposite corner.

Once Frederickson had finished the sketches, he used a kistska (a tool used to place the wax on Ukrainian Easter eggs) to place a wax resist around the drawing. The resist protects the fabric from absorbing other colours used in the centre. The sketches were filled with colour and then the process began to create the Northern Lights effect in the rest of the scarf. The silk was wet with water, and then a dry fabric dye was tossed strategically on the scarf, followed by coarse salt. The salt draws the colours in different directions, creating the unique designs shown in the photo.

On Sept. 9 Faye Walker left for Saskatoon where she would visit with her family, daughter Deidra, Jeff Nickel and granddaughters Olivia, Abby, Claire and Piper. While there she was scheduled for dental surgery before returning back to Alida.

John Cowan, Blairmore, AB arrived at the Cowan Farm on Sept.

10 to visit with the Gray, Edel, Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan for a week and to help out with the harvest. Unfortunately the weatherman did not co-operate and gave us rain and more rain until Friday the 13th when the sun decided to show its face once again. Instead of harvesting, John helped Shelly and others at the rink setting up some of the walls for the Haunted House. Hey for once Friday 13th wasn’t a bad omen – as Mr. Sun came out, let’s hope he stays with us for a while now.

John, Gray and Tim enjoyed an afternoon of fishing at the dam on Friday coming back home with their share of fish – a successful after-

noon. On Thursday we (John, Gray and I) went to Redvers for dinner and a visit with Joyce and Jackie George. John left early Sunday morning to head back to Blairmore.

Lori Phenix, Alexis and Teagan left on Sept.

13 for a weekend at Ogama where Alexis competed in a kid’s gymkhana. She really had fun, enjoyed the weekend and of course had a good time.

Finally later on Sunday, Sept. 15 afternoon the men were able to get back out into the field, the rain was dry enough to store safely. Here our guys finished up combining the wheat in another quarter and are now ready to move into the next field. Do hope that the weatherman does co-operate and let the harvest continue to move right along to the finish mark. It does take a while before things are dry in the morning, lots of fog to keep the moisture on the ground – come on sun – come out and stay out – please.

Went downstairs to my potato bin and got a

surprise – my Amaryllis plants, all five of them were starting to grow again. Just seems like I had put them down there from outside into storage in the basement.

Doesn’t look like any blooms are forming, but I’m hoping it’s too early to tell yet – but time will tell.

It’s hard to believe but now is also the time for our curling ice rink surface to take on a different look. Yes, construction and transformation has begun and does keep some people busy as progress continues in building up the stage for the Alida Haunted House. Minds are going wild with new and different ideas, as they are being put into action and place in among the other paraphernalia for the exciting tours to come of the “Halls of Horror”.

Before one knows it the spooks, ghouls, goblins and ghosts will soon be arriving to take up their special positions at the rink. Don’t forget to make note that the Alida Haunted House will soon be opening

Marie Vail spent several days visiting with her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Bill Greenbank in Regina recently.

The funeral service for Robert Eisler was held at the Wawota Town Hall on Sept. 17.

He had passed away August 10th at the age of 86 years. Interment was in the Fernley Cemetery.

Enbridge Inc. presented a cheque to the Wawota EMS for $7500.00 Gary Radtke made the presentation and Phil Heinrichs, Sandra Murray and Dianne Bunz were on hand.

This money will be used to purchase a new AED/ Monitor. Also congratulations to Dianne Bunz on 20 years as co-ordinator of the EMS. Word has been received of the passing of Jan Metz’s sister, Joanne Logie at Delta,BC. She was 73 years old. Sympathy to Dale and Jan and family in Regina.

Family members gathered at the Fernley Cemetery on Sept. 15 to inter Jim Easton’s ashes.

He passed away earlier in the year at the age of 76 years.

Darren and Kathy recently returned home

from a trip to the Maritimes including New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI. While there they enjoyed a visit with Trudy Davidson and Ed Miller at Kingston,NS. The trip was interrupted

by Hurricane Dorian as they made their way to Charlottetown. Torrential rains and 160 km winds caused long lasting power outages and made for at least one sleepless night. The hospitality and friendliness of the people was the highlight they will both remember.

I am always happy to receive any news for the paper.

Nora Jean Skuce (nee Adams) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Newhope Pioneer Lodge, Stoughton, Sask. Nora was born October 18, 1912 on the family farm south of Stoughton.

Nora will be lovingly remembered by her son Dennis (Vivian) Skuce & family; sons-in-law: Bill (Marcia) Goudy & family; Rod (Donna) McLeod & family; Joan Small’s family; daughter-in-law Betty ( Donald) Skuce and family; as well as many nieces, nephews and other family members.

Nora was predeceased by her husband William Sturgeon Skuce; parents; Marshall and Mary Adams; siblings; Myrtle, Nellie, Robert, Kathleen, Vera, James, Joe and Margaret; children; Marcia Goudy, Donna McLeod, Joan Small, Donald Skuce; grandchildren; Todd Robert Skuce, Nora Gillian McLeod; great grandchildren; Rachelle Goudy, Rachel Hunter, Benjamin Procknow Nora (Mom) was always the teacher; whether she was in the school room, in the kitchen at home, or in the garden or in the barn. We were told that when the school children came to visit at the Lodge her face would light up thinking of the small minds there to teach the wonders of the world. She was a stubborn, ferocious, loving wife while caring for her husband Bill throughout his long illness. She cared deeply for her children and their families; always supporting them in their many endeavors. She was a grand lady; Matriarch of the family; a loving caring Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great Great Grandmother, Aunt, Sister, Daughter and Wife. We will cherish her Memory.

The Family would like to thank the staff at Newhope Pioneer Lodge for their loving care of Nora during her time there. Their kindness was obvious in the contentment and well-being of Nora.

The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Stoughton, SK with Rev. Elizabeth Goodson of�iciating.

Interment took place at the Stoughton Town Cemetery immediately following the service; lunch followed at the Legion.

Margaret Louise (Brady) Smith

Rita St. Amant is a skilled artist whose work will make you question your eyesight.

She worked for 20 years as a cosmetology teacher, but has over 35 years of experience in total, working on stage, behind the stage and preparing people for stage.

This artistic talent extends beyond faces and hair, and she has drawn and painted her entire life, working for 20 years in mixed media.

Her most recent works involve felting layers of wool, alpaca and silk threads into a piece of fabric, to cre-

ate masterpieces. The felting machine is used like a paintbrush, to create the portrait. She is skilled in silk painting, window and wall scrolls, but her biggest creations are mind boggling. She completed a piece of work entitled the Stallion, which won the People’s Choice Award at the Manitoba Fibre Festival in Winnipeg, MB, and was one of the top 47 entries, out of 148 from across Canada in the National Fibre Association Juried Show in Portage la Prairie, MB. Marth Cole is a textile artist from Disley, SK who had an 8 x 10 feet elevator series that

looked like a painting and was the inspiration behind St. Amant’s most recent works.

St. Amant has been working on a portrait of a deer for over a year, aided by Ken Frederickson, who has been teaching her about bone structure and formation.

The deer has hundreds upon hundreds of hours of felting, using the wool to create depth and the silk threads to create highlights that draw your eye.

St. Amant will have an exhibition in Estevan in October where you will have an opportunity to see for yourself her incredible talent.

Funeral service was held Saturday July 27, 2019 at St. Andrews United Church, Mary�ield SK. Marg is predeceased by her husband of 61 years Fred Smith; father and mother Joe and Maggie Brady; brother and sister-in-law Bill and Wende Brady; sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Lloyd Peterson; father and mother-in-law Bill and Alma Smith; brothers-in-law Geordie Smith, Clare Kay; granddaughter Ashley Ostepchuk and grandson Brian Osipoff.

She will be greatly missed by her children Freda (Rob) Hill-Mary�ield; Dale (Gord) Otto-Yorkton; Sharon (Don) Osipoff-Regina; Lucille (Ken) Sheane-Mary�ield. Grandchildren Keith (Tina) Hill; Duane (Joanne) Hill; Michelle (Bryan) Fetter; Patrick Hill; Chad Otto; Scott (Chasity) Otto; Ryan (Shara) Ostepchuk; Cody (Geanna) Ostepchuk; Tara (Evan) Osipoff; Carmen (Mike) Sheane; Amanda (Chris) Sheane; Candace (Josh) Sheane; 20 great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Jack and Inez Brady; Sister Joyce Kay; Sisters-in-law Jean (Murray) Taylor; Verla Smith. As well as numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Marg’s family would like to send a special thanks to the staff of the Nursing Homes in Wawota, Redvers, Lampman and especially Moosomin for the excellent care she received during her stay in each facility. Marg resided in the Moosomin Nursing Home for the past 5 years.

THANK YOU The family of Margaret Smith wish to thank everyone for the condolences, phone calls, visits, social media notes, food, �lowers and hugs we received at the time of our Mom’s passing.

Thanks to those who prepared and served the lunch. A great big thank you to the choir and all who attended the funeral as well as those who made charitable donations in Mom’s memory. Mom would be deeply honored by it all.

Agnes C. Jonassen 1929 - 2019

It is with broken hearts that the family of Agnes Jonassen announces her passing on Monday, September 2, 2019 at the Redvers Health Centre Long Term Care Facility, Redvers, SK at the age of 89 years.

Agnes will be forever remembered by her family: daughter Diane (Ernie) Le Nouail and their son James and his daughter Milan, Jackie and her children Lennox and Rowan and their father Fred, Nicole (Jeremy) and David (Sarah); son Dallas (Louanne) and their children, Clayton, Tatem and Sean; son Dwight (Debbie) and his children Shawna (Matt) and their children Jaxon and Addilyn, Shantelle (Travis); son Doug (Jackie) and their children Stephanie (Jordan) and their son Logan, Nicholas (Samantha) and Kristen (Justin).

Agnes will also be remembered by her two brothers, Lloyd (Sandra) and Donald (Lyla); sister Ruth Murphy as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

Agnes was predeceased by her parents, Martin and Dora (nee Sorensen) Carlsen; husband John, nephew Thor Carlsen, brothers-in-law Roy Pierlot and Joe Murphy and sister-in-law Ruth Carlsen.

The Memorial Service was held on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Dannevirke Lutheran Church, Redvers, SK with The Rev. Michelle Moore presiding. The luncheon followed in the church basement. The interment took place at Dannevirke Lutheran Cemetery following the lunch.

Thank You Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Redvers Health Centre and Redvers EMS for all the love and support you showed our mother. To the Haven nursing staff, workers and residents who were all a part of mom’s everyday family, you truly brightened her days with your presence. Thank you to all who called, visited, sent food, �lowers and cards – it was so much appreciated. Special thanks to Rev. Michelle Moore for leading mom’s celebration of life service – your kind words, love and support were so precious to us as a family. Thank you to the grandchildren that took part in the service, your grandma would be so proud of you. To Hall Funeral Services – Dustin, Yvonne and Marilynn, who were there to help get things ready for the day, your kindness and compassion meant so much to us all. Thank you to Juanita Henderson for playing the organ, to Laust Lauritsen for ringing the bell at the cemetery, and to the Dannevirke Lutheran Church Women who prepared and served the lunch.

Carlyle Legion news and happenings Submitted by Doug Waldner The Carlyle Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is active again after the summer recess.

The Royal Canadian Legion is the organization that works with the public to aid veterans and to ensure that the sacrifices that they made for our nation are remembered

and honoured.

The Carlyle Branch does this in a number of ways. One of the most high profile ways that we have for fundraising for this goal is the upcoming Pancake Breakfast at the Homespun Craft Fair in Carlyle, this year on Saturday September 21.

hut from 08:00. It is a free breakfast, but we do collect any freewill donations that people are willing to give. We want to encourage all who attend to think of the men and women who are currently in, or have served in, the military services of our nation, and donate accordingly.

Another, even more high profile activity is the annual Poppy Campaign in late October and Remembrance Day Service on November 11.

Last year was a very significant Remembrance Day, as it was the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1. The Legion as a whole embarked upon the “Bells of Peace” initiative, and the Carlyle Branch wholeheartedly took part. Comrades Janck and Dianne Wilson, and other legion members gathered names and registration numbers of WW1 veterans who were buried in the area. This information was given to the Grade 10 students at Gordon F Kells High School. Under the supervision of Comrade Lynda Briggs more research was done by the students on the military files of each of the locally buried veterans. The level of detail in each file varied, but all were informative. The information gathered was, in some cases, rather surprising. If you were in the Canadian military in World War 1 and you got sick, you did not get paid for your sick day. This surprised the students, and many of us living in the 21st century.

During the week before November 11, 2018 four students went with Comrades Jack and

Dianne Wilson to the three local cemeteries, Glen Morris, West Carlyle and Moose Creek, and honoured the graves of the 16 veterans found with Canadian flags and stones painted by local artist Beth Corrigan. In this process we found out that several of our WW1 veterans are lying in unmarked graves.

The Carlyle Branch is

working with a federal govenment program to remedy this.

On November 11, in addition to the usual Remembrance Day Service, the Carlyle Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion was graciously granted permission by the Carlyle United Church to utilize it’s outside speaker system to ring the “Bells of Peace”, a 100

chime bell ringing to commemorate the 100 years since the bells were rung across the United Kingdom and Canada at the announcement of the Armistice that ended World War 1.

In appreciation for our effort the Royal Canadian Legion awarded the Carlyle Branch with a plaque recognizing our participation.

Arcola Craft & Trade Show in 16th year

By Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net Started in 2003 by Mary Milligan and Dora McKinnon, the Arcola Craft & Trade Show has been under the management of Gwen Taylor since 2010.

It will host 75 vendors for the adults, but this year they have added something special for the kids.

Skye and Marshall of Paw Patrol will be appearing from 1 to 3 p.m. for a meet and greet.

The Craft Show runs Saturday only from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All moneys raised go back to the Prairie Place Complex and Taylor is happy to say that in the past eight years she has donated over $30,000.

There will be something for everyone, from cheesecake in a jar to pottery, handmade knives to beach glass art and everything in-between. Make sure to add this event to your weekend plans.
