From Front page - Pheasant Rump Nakota First Submitted A small First Nation in southeastern Saskatchewan recently celebrated a green energy milestone for their community. The Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation located near the Village of Kisbey, 180 km southeast of Regina held a feast and ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the installation of solar panel systems on all of their community buildings. Chief Ira McArthur stated “this project was the brainchild of our Elders. During community discussions they continually raised the concern of “how do we leave a better world for our grandchildren and the generations yet to come?” Through this dialogue the recurring concept was to lead by example, and a solar project for our community buildings seemed to be an obvious and achievable goal.” 56 panels forming 5 systems totalling 16.8kw installed on 5 different buildings brought this initiative to life, forming a base average replacement comparison ratio of 110% for each building’s consumption. Panels were provided and installed by TruGreen Energy of Emerald Park, Saskatchewan.

President and CEO of TruGreen Energy, Miguel Catellier said “ We are so grateful to partner with Chief Ira McArthur and the forward-thinking and progressive peoples of Pheasant Rump Nakota Nation. There’s free energy falling from the sky and all you need to do is catch it. Pheasant Rump is now a green energy producer that’s protecting our natural world and saving thousands on their energy bills for decades to come.

With community members in attendance ranging in age from infancy to elderly, 5 year old Avra Beaudry cut the ribbon as Pheasant Rump Nakota Council and community members, TruGreen and SaskPower representatives cheered.

Joined by Wavell Starr, an Indigenous Liaison for SaskPower, Chief McArthur stated “this project was truly dependent on the partnership of various institutions. Taking advantage of SaskPower’s net-metering program made this project affordable and a wise business decision. Who wouldn’t want to consistently reduce community operational costs?” FSIN Chief candidate Bobby Cameron was also in attendance and offered the following words “Projects and investments like these are leaving a safe healthy vibrant path for future generations.

Pheasant Rump is a prime example of our Inherent and Treaty Right to a healthy environment.” Chief McArthur noted that, although no representatives were in attendance, funding for this project was provided to the community

By Greg Nikkel There is a source of current, accurate information in many of our communities that is irreplaceable and is necessary and vital, not only to local residents but to the country, and even to democracy itself: the newspaper.

National Newspapers Week is being observed from Oct. 1-7 and celebrated across Canada — but do newspapers even matter anymore in an age of digital, instant information on multiple social media platforms?

The answer is an unequivocal “Yes!” Consider the following facts: 1. Nine in 10 Canadians read content that was originally generated

from a newspaper each week. Canadians turn to newspaper information on a number of issues. It could be the details of a government program, or updates on NAFTA talks (now called USMCA) and how that might impact us where we live. In the case of a community newspaper, readers seek out information on town council happenings, school events, or the latest hockey game.

2. A recent survey found that 63 per cent of Canadians are unable to distinguish between legitimate news websites and fake news stories.

Take for example the recent controversy over budget cuts to the regional library system in Saskatchewan.

Across the province, a grassroots “Drop Everything and Read” protest movement was born, and newspapers were front and centre supplying stories, columns and editorials along with coverage of the grassroots protest. Eventually the government of the day reversed itself, and fully restored the funding they had cut.

Library officials stated afterward that stories and editorials from the newspapers were a big factor in getting the word out to the public, and urging them to step forward to protest.

There is a quote in the Steven Spielberg movie, “The Post” where Meryl Streep’s character (the owner-publisher of the Washington Post) said, “newspapers are the first rough draft of history” because they are covering it as it unfolds every day.

People want and need to know the truth about what is going on in their community, including why they should care about who is doing what, when are they doing it, and why? Just one of many important reasons why during National Newspapers Week in Canada, Canadians are asked to simply sign a pledge of support by going to www.newspapersmatter.ca and send a message that matters, more than ever!

Jeff Cowan spent a couple of days in the Alida area, visiting his parents, Gray and Edel, his brother Tim, Shelly and Ainsley as well as with some friends before returning to Regina on Sept. 29.

Lesa Bendtsen, Shirley Bendtsen, Tara, Vanessa and Jorja Bendtsen (Carlyle) spent the afternoon on Sept. 29 in Weyburn where they attended the bridal shower for Shelby Bendtsen who will be marrying Quinn Sidloski on Oct. 20 in Weyburn. Shelby is the daughter of Todd and Laurie Ann Bendtsen.

Adam Cowan and his friend Chrissy spent Sept. 29 at the Cowan farm where they visited his grandparents Gray and Edel, as well as enjoy some pumpkin target shooting.

Congratulations to the Oxbow Senior Volleyball Team for winning gold at the Lumsden High School Volleyball tournament on the weekend Sept. 28-29.

There are two girls from Alida who play with this team – Cordelia Patton and Charity Lemieux – way to go girls.

Faye Walker and Edel Cowan attended the fall supper in Storthoaks on Sept. 30 as well as many others from Alida and other surrounding towns, making for a great crowd in attendance. Delicious food as always – keep up the good work guys and gals.

Did you happen to get to watch the Pinty Grand Slam curling this past week? I did get to see some, especially the finals on Sunday. Team Gushue managed to win over Team Carruthers – some excellent curling shots were definitely made throughout their

final game. Now the women’s was something else – NO Canadian teams, both Homan and Jones were defeated in semi-finals, leaving international team in the finals, resulting in Sweden winning over Russia. Boy that almost goes to show that Canada had better get their soaks pulled up and do some more practice – they may have their work cut for them this coming curling season.

Gee what a surprise to get up Oct. 1 and see snow on the ground, hopefully it doesn’t stick around for long – too early for snow yet (me thinks). Do believe that there still is lots of harvesting to be done in the area, so this snow won’t make the farmers happy.

Thankfully the guys here were able to finish up later yesterday afternoon when it finally became dry enough to combine – Hooray! Now they can get at finishing up some other fall work before winter sets in (I hope). Gee hate to mention winter – but it is the next season. The rink is definitely taking on a different look now, and the spooks, goblins and ghouls are beginning to arrive too – they’ll be waiting for you.

Carol Reddekop hosted a birthday party for Dorothy Rohatyn on Sept. 21. Five of her friends attended the event. `Congratulations to Hayley Down on winning the Mary Tait scholarship at the Veterinary Medicine Awards in Saskatoon. This award is in recognition of outstanding achievement. Hayley was top in her class in 1st year veterinary studies. This scholarship has a monetary value of $10,700.00 which will pay for her tuition and student fees. Family members, Angela Down, Gord Lucier, Doug Down, Luther and Janice Boehmer and Yvonne Down are very proud of her accomplishments and her work ethics.

Last Saturday afternoon a baby shower was held at the Wawota United church to honour Macesm Layne Saville. He is an infant son of Layne Saville and Katelyn Matsalla of Carlyle.

Word has been received of the passing of Alex Burke of Moosomin. He passed away on Sept. 24 in his 90th year. Sympathy to his many family members in this area.

In the end it was a great example of coming together and everyone working for a common cause. It is especially heart warming when we realize that several small churches are closing.

The service was followed by a barbeque and fellowship.

Pro-residential school ad a sad affair

By Murray Mandryk It’s irritating that politicians or third-party groups think people can be easily manipulated.

About the only thing as irritating is there will always be a few people, no matter where they live, who will let themselves be manipulated by hearing only what they want to hear.

These thoughts cross one’s mind in the wake of the controversy over the Winnipeg-based Frontier Centre for Public Policy’s short-lived paid advertisements on rural radio stations on the “myth” that Indian residential schools were a bad experience for every student that attended.

Most of you will quickly recognize the two-part nature of this one-sided assessment.

Obviously, not every First Nation person that went through residential schools was affected in the same way. Some will acknowledge they did get a quality education.

One might venture as far in assessing the ads to say that because the residential school experience was limited to a smaller percent of the First Nation population, it can’t be solely attributed to every issue experienced by First Nation person today.

But what right does anyone have calling their devastating impact a “myth”?

The fact is that there were substantial examples of physical and sexual abuse, among the worst, occurred in this province involving Anglican Gordon Reserve School director William Penniston Starr who was criminally convicted of vial acts.

There is simply no question that this single individual had a profound impact on not only on his victims but also the entire Gordon First Nations population have dealt with pain and hurt in their community for generations. In turn, this actually defined relations between the First Nation and nearby community of Punnichy for decades.

Obviously, not all residential schools faced such specific sexual abuses, but plenty of them faced physical abuse at the hands of supposed religious teachers. This also had a profound effect on them, their relationship with the white community and their long-term ability to successfully parent.

It is a fact verified by their graves that many hundreds of these children died in the care of schools. It is also a fact that they were denied their religion and culture and even the right to speak their languages.

Against their will and the will of their families, they were removed from their homes for long stretches.

It is a fact that some of these children died while trying to get home see their families and that families and others on on reserves would try and hide these children.

One can chalk it up the values and norms of the day, but that does not excuse the problems passed on from generation to generation. Nor does it make the long-term repercussions any less lasting.

So for the Frontier Centre to ask whether Canadians are “being told the whole truth about residential schools” begs the question: Was the right-wing think tank choosing to tell the whole story?

One can only speculate as to why choose to do so.

The advertisement was said to be promotion for article that website entitled “Myth versus Evidence: Your Choice”. The piece was authored by Mark DeWolf, who says he was a non-Indigenous residential school student.

After the controversy erupted, the article was removed from the Frontier Centre website.

Well-known radio voice Roger Currie who voiced the two-minute-long advertisement denounced the content, saying it “certainly doesn’t represent my views”. And the radio station chain pulled ads.

But, again, why was this notion being promoted in the first place?

That they seemed specifically aimed at a rural audience strongly suggests they were designed to promote this view at a time of considerably racial tension in rural Saskatchewan.

The ads likely didn’t work on most people.

But it’s sad the Frontier Centre would try . . . and that maybe it did work of a few people.

If it looks like a Doug, it might be a Doug A painting and one of her copper etchings hangs in the hallway. Her bedroom walls are adorned with hand-painted inspirational sayings and her closet doors are filled with sketches from top to bottom.

Our oldest daughter, Vandana, is quite an artist and though she no longer lives at home I love being surrounded by her art.

Her younger sister, MaMy Outlook dalina, would liken art to a good Shelley Luedtke teeth cleaning. It’s something you do when, and only when, you absolutely have to. The girl would willingly run miles for soccer and cross country, and she learned to break boards with her hands and feet in Tae Kwon Do, but put a sketching pencil in her hand and she would shut down. She’s a lot like me that way--minus the running and board breaking of course.

When the girls were teenagers we were in Disney World and had plans to go to the Animation Academy where guests were tutored by animators in drawing one of the Disney characters. I had come up with a rather clever plan. My husband (who is capable of drawing reasonably well) was going to take Vandana into the studio while I (who has been permanently banned by family and friends from ever playing Pictionary again) would take Madalina to see ‘The Incredibles’ characters who were posing for pictures and signing autographs. It was a great plan.

The point, after all, was to give our artist a unique experience while sparing two of us the humiliation of joining in. It might have worked, however Vandana, upon seeing the length of the line, didn’t want everyone waiting on her for something only she wanted to do.

That was eight years ago. This past August we were in Disneyland and I was determined to right a wrong. This time we were all going. No matter what.

As you enter Animation Academy you pick up a large sheet of blank paper attached to a drawing board. We found seats and were introduced to a very personable and funny animator who was going to be our instructor. She told us that with a simple series

of shapes we would all create a drawing of Doug from the movie “Up”. So step by step we listened to her instructions and watched her drawing come to life on a big screen, while we worked at our drawing boards.

At one point my youngest daughter and I made eye contact and just about burst out laughing, but quickly got back to work. Circles. Ovals. LIght markings here. Now darken this line. Now round this out. And on it went.

A few minutes later we were done. I took a quick glance up and down our row. None of the drawings looked alike. Few looked like Doug. But there were big smiles everywhere.

Vandana’s was fantastic--as I expected it would be. But what stands out most is how she saw our drawings. She pointed out things like, “Dad, you did the eyes so well. Mom, that nose is so good. Madi, he looks awesome. Good job.”

Not long after we were on to the next attraction, but I did take time for a moment of reflection. If there hadn’t been a line-up, or if we weren’t holding fast passes to a popular ride, I would have gone back in and done another drawing. Me, the little girl who carried around the voice of a grade 3 teacher who said my drawing wasn’t good enough to be included in a class presentation. Me, the teenager with friends who were such good artists I felt inferior. Me, the adult woman who avoids volunteering for anything artistic because I feel so deficient. Me, the woman who had so much fun drawing that day I wanted to do it again.

Some of us draw. Or sew. Some garden, fix cars or lead meetings. Sing. Knit. Write computer programs. Teach. Counsel. Develop apps. Run. Plan events. Farm. Design…and on it goes. To be sure we have more abilities in some areas than others, but that doesn’t mean we should ever back away, avoid, or not try. What we will miss out on is far too great a risk.

So dig in and enjoy the process. Smile at the outcome--whatever it may be. Time, opportunity and a bit of encouragement could be all it takes to go from dabbling at Doug to aspirational artistry. Now I just have to decide what to try tomorrow. That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money: Affording the cost of your kid’s sports Kids like to play and that’s a good thing. Playing promotes health and fitness and being part of a sports team of any kind is not only a terrific way to make friends, it’s also a lot of fun. A recent survey published in The Globe and Mail estimates the annual cost of children’s sports at just under $1,000 per child – and as your child becomes more developed and competitive, those expenses increase.

Yet many Canadians do not build these costs into their budgets – simply winging it and hoping to pay each bill – for travel

expenses, summer training camps, new uniforms and equipment and on and on – as it comes up.

So you won’t have to wing it, here are some tips for making sure those games don’t break the bank.

• Track your expenses The first step to being in control of the costs is understanding how much you spend — so write down all costs associated with your child’s sport.

• Share a ride Save money by splitting the expenses of travelling to practices, games and tournaments with other families.

• Pack a lunch Instead of eating while on the road,

bring coolers filled with fresh food from home.

• Buy second-hand As your kids outgrow their equipment, look for stores that sell gently-used sporting goods. You can also relist their outgrown equipment online or sell it back to the used retailer.

There’s no doubt about it — sports encourage a lifetime of health and fitness and are an important part of your kid’s development.

How to relieve a dry nose

To keep your nose moisturized, use a saline solution every day.

In addition to humidifying and warming the air you breathe, your nose acts as a filter that protects your respiratory system from germs, dust and other airborne particles. However, for it to carry out its duties effectively, your nose needs to be well moisturized. Does your nose itch or burn? Is it stuffed up in the morning? Do you sneeze all the time or experience frequent nosebleeds? Then odds are you have a dry nose. Here are a few tips to improve the situation.

A dry nose can be

caused by a variety of factors, including dry air, cigarette smoke, indoor heating, air conditioning, various chemical products (varnish, cleaning products, air fresheners, etc.), dust and allergies.

To take care of your nose: • Keep humidity levels at home between 30 and 50 per cent.

• Don’t overheat your home or overuse the air conditioner.

• Clean on a regular basis to prevent dust from collecting.

• Air out the house every day.

• Clean your nose every day with a saline solution.

Ask your pharmacist about it.

• Use a nasal lubricant, as required, to relieve irritation.

• Wear a mask whenever you’re in contact with respiratory irritants (when sanding furniture, using chemical products, etc.).

• Avoid smoking and, if possible, exposing yourself to second-hand smoke.

If the problem persists despite your efforts, see your doctor.

There can be only one Stanley Cup champion next June, but as the 2018-19 season gets underway, there are high expectations in many jurisdictions across North America.

With the off-season addition of the No. 1 available free agent, John Tavares, Toronto Maple Leafs’ fans have high expectations that they will snap the 52year drought that began the season after they won their last cup, 1967.

With the acquisition in late September of all-star defenceman Erik Karlsson, the San Jose Sharks have high

expectations that finally, this will be the season they don’t experience any playoff disappointment.

With most of their stars returning, including the sublime Alex Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals have expectations of pulling off a repeat of their first Stanley Cup triumph.

With Blake Wheeler’s signature on a new five-year contract and the team’s young stars, such as goalie Connor Hellebuyck and centre Mark Scheifele, one year older and one year better, Winnipeg Jets think they can take one step beyond the Western Conference final, where their run to the Cup ended last spring.

With an unprecedented trip to the Stanley Cup final in their first year in the league, the Vegas Golden Knights see no reason why this year should be any different victory-wise.

With Sidney Crosby still in his prime, and with the knowledge that they know how to win the big games (two Cup triumphs in the last three years will have that effect), the Pittsburgh Penguins think they can get back to the big stage.

Fans in Nashville expect that one of these years, they’ll stop singing Close But No Cigar and change the lyrics to something more upbeat. With skill at every position (Pekke Rinne in goal; a slew of scorers; and top-four defensemen to die for), the Predators are hoping for a breakthrough.

Why not Boston?

Why not Tampa Bay? Well why not? Those two were among the five teams to eclipse the 50-

win mark last year and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be top contenders again.

And that’s it, folks.

The Stanley Cup winner will be one of the nine aforementioned teams.

If you’re a fan of one of the other 22 clubs, sorry to burst your bubble.

Letter to the Editor I am very concerned.

You should be, too.

Recently, I read some statistics on how Canadians are navigating their way through the whole “Fake News” issue. Apparently, 69 per cent of us cannot tell the difference between which news is real and which isn’t. I am alarmed. We all need to be.

Today, it seems that the real news is being drowned out by an avalanche of so-called “fake” news that is nothing more than opinion pieces and marketing strategies to get us to buy a product, vote a certain way or achieve some other nefarious motive.

When I read my newspaper, either online or in print, I can at least

trust the journalism. I certainly don’t like all that I see, but at least I have some recourse if I feel strongly about something that has been written. In essence, I know where they live.

Their shingle is above the door. They have a mailing address and a phone number.

Now I am concerned about the “real” part of the news. Much of it

to us. I need my elected officials to continue to be held accountable for the decisions they make with the tax money we provide. I want them to know that my “real” news is important to me; locally, provincially, nationally and internationally. The journalism that newspapers provide is vital to the health of my community. I just do not see anyone else doing

Show you really care

By Linda Wegner A friend told me of a visit to his doctor.

“Doc,” he complained, “Sometimes I hurt in my knees, sometimes in my hands and…ah, I just seem to hurt somewhere all the time.” Without blinking an eye, the young but professional physician grinned then replied. “Harry, at your age if you don’t hurt, you’re dead.”

If that’s the criteria I guess I’ve entered “that age” as well. Now I’ve always believed that age isn’t really counted

in years or decades but rather by attitude and fortitude but I confess that these days the most positive of attitudes have been trumped by those annoying bodily aches and pains. Plain and simple, there are few days now where I don’t hurt somewhere.

But as true as that is and as real as my pain, my physical aches and distresses pale in comparison what someone else might be going through. Fresh in my mind is the distress of my friends in North Car-

Mariann Krukoff, one of our younger residents; celebrated her 88th birthday. Her daughter Lydia Fraser told of her mother’s care and led us in singing some of Mom’s favorite songs. Fred played his mouthorgan. At the end of the week the Villa Guild served for Mildred Wilson’s birthday.

The members of Kola Church brought us worship on Wednesday night. Harold and Cheryl Friesen, Harold and Florence Klassen, and Alma Friesen and Mary Braun provided the music. Harold Klassen read us his mother’s testimony, written for her 90th birthday. She died in May and was one of our Bible Study members next door at the Centennial Haven. She had been the second of 11 children in Kleefeld, MB; quit school at 10 to do housework and work in a store. Seventy-one descendants attended her funeral.

What can I, as a Christian, do to help ease another’s pain?

Instructions to the New Testament church include exhortations to remain true to Christ’s teaching and doing that includes supporting one another. “Bear one another’s burdens”, “Comfort one another” and “By love serve one another” are just some of the exhortations given us in Scripture. We are to do what we can to help but with the understanding that while we may not be able to provide a tangible solution, we can pray.

Obituary William Hamilton Bryce 1930 - 2018

On Sept 25,2018 Bill quietly slipped away from us.

He was born to James W. and Margaret Bryce on Feb 12th 1930. He had one sister Ruth. Bill began his schooling in Percy carried on in British Columbia returning to Arcola to �inish.

Upon �inishing his schooling Bill went on to join the air force and earned his wings to become a pilot. During this time he also trained to wrestle which eventually lead to his later being known as the “Arcola Strong Man”! Bill won many of his bouts and held amongst others the title of provincial middleweight champion. Bill participated in many sports including one of his favorites which was baseball.

Bill left the air force and began farming in 1953. In November 1954 Bill married the apple of his eye Mary Jane Brown. Together Bill and Mary Jane raised four children Scott, Carolyn, Patrick and Danny. Bill lived a good life doing what made him happy, he loved to farm/ranch and together with his family took great pride in starting a herd of Registered Aberdeen Angus Cattle. He Showed his cattle at Regina in 1971 at the very �irst Canadian Western Agribition and continued that tradition over the years missing very few. Bill continued with his herd for 51 years. During these years Bill belonged to the Legion, the Masons, the Oddfellows and the Agricultural Society.

After his wife’s passing Bill would often say he was “married to the farm”. He spent countless hours doing whatever need to be done around the farm right up until his passing. When not outside (which was 90% of the time) Bill could often be found pouring over the latest newspapers or cattle magazines, keeping up to date on current affairs and with what was new in the industry. Bill enjoyed learning about the worlds rapidly changing ways. He also loved when people stopped by for a chat and delighted himself by bragging about whatever his children, grand and great grandchildren’s latest accomplishments were! In June 2016 Bill was blessed with another addition to his growing family making him a Great Great Grandfather, (Makenna Bryce). Man, talk about a proud Patriarch!

In summary, Bill was a proud man who worked hard doing what he loved. He belonged to many organizations over the years lending a hand wherever he could.

His life centered around his family, the farm and his love of the Aberdeen Angus cattle.

Bill was an avid sports fan. Many of which he participated in during his younger years, gaining much enjoyment from the fellowship that each sport provided him with.

Bill was predeceased by his wife Mary Jane in 2008 and leaves to mourn his children, Scott(Connie) Arcola, Carolyn, Redvers, Patrick(Pam) Regina, Danny(Lisa) Red deer, their children and grandchildren as well as many friends and relatives.

We will miss Bills listening ear, his helpful hand and the expertise in giving advise that only someone who had done as many things in a lifetime as he had could give!

Our hearts felt many things as we laid Bill to rest. We are thankful for our time together and for the memories those times have given to us.

Without your helpfulness and understanding Bill could never have remained where he was for as long as he did. Your understanding, your helpful calls, rides and concern for his well-being was well above anything we had known. Your kindnesses will never be forgotten.

We so appreciate the calls, texts and messages that we received and are still receiving. Those that stopped to repeat to us their memories/ interactions of time spent with Bill have left us with many new memories that will forever be etched into our minds. They really do help to ease the sorrow. It is a good feeling to know others care and shared in our concern for Bills well being. To the wonderful people who brought us food and hugs, you guys rock! The beautiful �lowers we received are giving us such joy as they remind us of how Bill too enjoyed �lowers. One year at Christmas Bill made the trek to Carlyle to buy all the women, that were going to be here for the holiday meal, the most beautiful corsages to wear!

When needing a lunch for after the graveside service it was with great amazement that we watched things transpire. Even a magician would have had trouble with what our community ladies pulled off! Even though we needed a lunch, on what was one of the busiest times for our community (fall supper) the ladies made phone calls and arrangements and presto! It was pulled together with very very short notice. Thank you again, oh wonderful community that we live in and the wonderful gals involved with that. May all the kindnesses and blessings you bestowed upon us and our families come back to you tenfold when you need it the most.

Stoughton School has special BBQ Stoughton School’s seventh annual backto-school barbecue was held on Thursday in spite of the rainy weather. The families did not get to celebrate the new playground structure for a grand opening, but they had a good time gathered indoors with the food, school staff, and community.

Richardson Pioneer was the major food sponsor and Rick Phillips did the barbecuing on their behalf.

The Happy Nun was the bun sponsor and owner Gayla Gilbertson also helped with the barbecue. Stoughton meat market also made a food donation.

A handful of organizations from the community had displays set up to provide families with information and answers to any questions people had.

The information tables included the RCMP, who came to inform residents of the child ID program, presented by Const. Preston. Stoughton‘s library set up a display, along with Jeryn Tanner from the Crossroads Multiple 4-H, Dee Lyke of the Newhope Horse Club with information on her personal riding lessons, and Morgan Turk played music during the event.

He provided info on his guitar lessons, fiddle lessons from Donna Turk and lessons available from Jacquie Walbaum.

Many families were on hand to enjoy a barbecue to celebrate the new school year on Thursday in the school gym, put on by the School Community Council and local businesses. We live in a world of changes

By Calvin Daniels If you are a regular reader of this space, and thanks to those who are, then you know I am a believer in maintaining older genetics, whether they are within a heritage breed of livestock, or in the plants from which our current crops evolved.

The reasoning is simple enough, the world we live in changes, and that means what we grow today may not be well-suited for the world our children live in, or our grandchildren.

For our scientists to be able to adapt crops and livestock for differing conditions we may need to be able to go back to the foundational building blocks and essentially start over in developing something that will fill those future needs.

So I was more than a little interested when a release came via email from the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) dealing with the very topic.

The article related, “plant genetic resources are any plant materials, such as seeds, fruits, cuttings, pollen, and other organs and tissues from

which plants can be grown. The stewards are the breeders, researchers, farmers, gene bank staff, and many others who keep them safe and utilize them.”

It went on to note Peter Bretting, a National Program Leader for the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service, saying these plant genetic materials and those who care for them are important for human survival.

“These are the materials for crop breeding which play a role in food security and plant research,” he said in the article. “Crops make up the thin green line standing between humanity and calamity. To feed the growing world population, breeders must develop new crop types that yield more on less land with less material such as water and fertilizer.”

Interestingly, the article also noted, “an important part of these plant genetic resources is crop wild relatives.

These are closely related to crop species but have not been domesticated by humans. They are often related to crops eaten today in some

way and provide useful material for breeding, study, and preservation, says Bretting.

“For example, breeders might find they want a trait like drought tolerance in a specific crop. It may be a rare quality only found in an ancestor. Luckily, breeders might be able to find what they need thanks to the stewards who are conserving the wild ancestors.”

This is fascinating in the sense it ties in with the concept that every species of plant and animal is worth preserving because science may find in the future it contains some trait or gene which may have a dramatically positive effect for humanity.

That vision dovetails with the recent recognition by CSSA in celebrating Crop Wild Relative Week Sept. 22-29.

The week was created by the scientific society to raise awareness of the valuable wild relatives of familiar crops.

“The fruits, grains, and roots of crop wild relatives are not as large as domesticated crops.

Some might be bitter or have poor texture.

These traits are useful to breeders in the fight to create a sustainable and secure food supply,” noted an article on the week.

So to be prepared for what might come tomorrow we need to maintain the materials to develop the crops we will need. Who knows a weed today may tomorrow be a valued part of agriculture.
