CES runs for Terry Fox Foundation

By Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net Students, staff and parents of Carlyle Elementary School took to the streets on Friday, Sept. 27 to raise money in the annual Terry Fox Run. The students collected pledges and wore names of the people they were running for, and the cold, damp weather had no effect on their spirits. The children walked from the school down 3rd St. West across Coteau, to Main Street, all the way down to Carlyle Avenue. They turned east and walked up 5th St. East, turning onto Riddell Ave. and then heading north on 4th St. East back to the school.

As you can see from the photo both here and on the Observed At page (page 12), the older children did a great job of making sure the younger students made it to the school, whether it was a helping hand or a piggy-back ride.

The students raised just over $6,000 towards fighting this horrid disease and for their efforts they earned a movie night, along with popcorn, in the gym.

Taking part in the Terry Fox Run is an act of caring and Dane P. piggy-backing Blaze D. is the perfect example of caring, as the students of Carlyle Elementary School took to the streets on September 27, despite the cool, damp weather. See more photos on page 12. (Photo by Mary Moffat)

Golfers brave the elements at Kenosee Lions 10th Annual Golf Tournament

Twenty-two teams of four gathered at the Kenosee Lake Golf Course on Saturday, Sept. 28 for the 10th Annual Kenosee Lions Club tournament. Each golfer paid $100 for the opportunity to help the Lions

Club help their community.

The sun was shining, but temperatures were far from warm and the barbecued smokies were a hot commodity.

The Moose Mountain Church of Christ hosted a pancake breakfast, the BarBar sponsored a $10,000 hole-in-one,

while supper and a cabaret at the Moosehead awaited the golfers at the end of their 18 holes.

All-in-all, the golfers enjoyed a good day on the course and I am sure they were all happy that the tournament was not held on Sunday in the middle of the rain and snow.

Cornerstone has full complement of teachers There is a complete complement of teachers in the South East Cornerstone Public School Division for the 2019-20 school year.

The local division employs about 550 educators for each academic year and all positions are currently filled, according to Keith Keating, the division’s deputy director, who spoke at the Sept. 18 regular board meeting.

“We will have a few maternity leaves coming up though, a good number of them actually and I guess that’s a good problem to have,” he added. “But otherwise, we are currently fully staffed.”

Keating also provided the board with the information that four of the 38 Cornerstone schools had sought permission to have staff and/or students recite the Lord’s Prayer during the school year for certain assemblies or special events.

The request required a motion of acceptance by the board and they unanimously provided this permission to Queen Elizabeth School in Weyburn, MacLeod Elementary School in Moosomin, Gladmar Regional School and Carievale School.

Lynn Little, the school division’s director of education since 2014, has had her services contract renewed. Board members voted unanimously to extend the new contract offer, which was accepted.

Cornerstone’s annual financial report was made ready for auditors’ scrutiny on Sept. 23 and 24 and again in mid-October. That should wrap up the fiscal business end of the school year, said Marilyn Yurkiw from the division’s financial department. She joined the trustees to provide a quarterly report near the end of their regular open business session.

The board’s next public meeting is scheduled for Oct. 15, which is a slight deviance from their usually scheduled monthly open sessions. The board generally meets on a Wednesday.

Reaction to Trudeau’s missteps puzzling

By Murray Mandryk Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives are likely frustrated they aren’t pulling well ahead of Liberals, given recent developments in this federal election campaign.

It may be telling us something about what’s now wrong with modern-day politics.

As of the writing of this column, we are two weeks into the campaign. And while opinion polls show the Conservatives hold a massive lead in Saskatchewan and Manitoba (the provinces seem to always be lumped together) they are showing Trudeau’s Liberals only two percentage points behind Scheer’s Conservatives.

Given recent developments, this is surprising.

About one week ago, images were revealed of a younger Justin Trudeau wearing blackface and brownface makeup, something that surely plays into the Conservative campaign aimed at Trudeau that has suggested “he’s not ready” and “he’s never been ready.”

Yet according to Poll Tracker, which takes into account the work of seven major polling companies, the Liberals have only dropped two percentage points while the Conservatives have only gained .4 per cent. The NDP are said to have gained 1.1 per and the Green Party .9 per cent, all within the margin or error and exactly a significant gain.

Perhaps it is a bit early to expect an instantaneous change. There is still another four weeks left in this campaign and the Conservatives are only beginning to roll out new negative ads with Trudeau’s image in blackface.

Moreover, polling in this cellphone/social media age is less reliable because it’s harder to get a cross section of voters.

But how this story is now playing out may speak to the divisiveness of today’s politics and how this may be changing the modern-day campaign.

If the Poll Tracker numbers are telling us anything, it’s that the Conservatives seem to be gaining the least from the Trudeau revelations, less than half of what the NDP and Greens appear to have gained.

Maybe it’s telling us that voters are remarkably forgiving for youthful indiscretions. But Trudeau was a 29-year-old teacher at the time, so it was hardly a youthful indiscretion.

Moreover, Trudeau’s personal approval rating has taken a severe hit over this. According to the same polls, Scheer has not soared past Trudeau as the most preferred leader. Yet Scheer’s Conservatives seem to have gained little. Why? Well, it’s likely telling us that voters are entrenched in their views of the parties that they generally support and that they see other issues as larger priorities.

There are a lot of you out there that may be bothered by this. You likely should be. It’s a nonstarter for anyone, and especially Liberals, to try to justify what Trudeau.

That said, it’s hard to single out staunch Liberals for having an irrational, unflinching view of Trudeau and Liberal policies when Conservatives and New Democrats pretty much take the same approach.

Parties that are only focused on”their issues” while not properly addressing other issues is a big problem in today’s politics.

For example, the Conservatives are clearing doing well in their western base because of their opposition to the carbon tax. And they do have a very strong argument that Trudeau’s version of the carbon tax won’t reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

But by not being more adamant in stating that Conservatives accept that globe warming is a manmade problem and by not promoting stronger policy positions to deal with this serious problem, it’s quite likely the Conservatives are driving away votes.

Those votes are being entrenched in other parties in the same way Trudeau’s unflinching, uncompromising pursuit of this carbon tax is likely solidified Conservative support.

It’s a big country where opinions and priorities do vary greatly.

But that today’s national parties can’t seem to string together solid, compromised national platforms is troubling.

Yes, but does Kim like it?

It seemed like just the kind of place my sister and I would enjoy visiting so we made plans to drive the hour and 20 minutes one Saturday morning in August to check it out. It had been written about in a national magazine and talked about on a province-wide talk show. Good enough recommendation for us, so off we went.

My Outlook We stayed less than five Shelley Luedtke minutes. I know, I know…we really gave it a chance, right? But neither of us had any desire to stay once we saw the place for ourselves.

I’ve always found the work of critics or reviewers rather curious. It’s a job that requires recommending or informing others about the strengths or deficiencies of a product or place that ultimately we each bring a very personal perspective to. Elements that make for enjoyable entertainment or interesting places in one person’s opinion could be very different for someone else. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has picked up a book or checked out a movie based on the recommendation of someone only to question what they had seen in it. We each have different ideas that determine what we think is good.

The editor of an Ohio newspaper announced that for the first time in more than 40 years the news outlet will not be endorsing anyone in the next election.

One in Illinois made a similar announcement but has already received tremendous pushback from readers. It’s a long standing tradition in U.S. politics for editorial boards to give endorsements, and whether people agree or disagree it seems to engage more people in the discussion, even though voting impact is hard to assess.

There are some endorsements that seem easier to quantify. In a lawsuit launched by Kim Kardashian West against a fashion brand for unauthorized use of her name and likeness, she indicated she typically earns $500,000 for a single Instagram post and for longer-term endorsements receives up to $6 million

annually. In an affidavit she said unauthorized use of her image makes it appear she endorses products she doesn’t and that confuses her fans. She explained, “Because a significant portion of my business involves the licensing of my name, trademarks, and images, I work very hard to ensure that my brand means something to my fans and to the public, who view the use of my name as the stamp of approval by me.” Really? Her opinion is worth that much?

Purchasing a piece of jewelry or item of clothing based on someone’s stamp of approval may have rather limited consequence, but what if the opposite were to happen? What if someone’s disapproval of something has an impact on us? Perhaps it’s not a big deal if it means missing out on a good movie or restaurant, but regrettably it sometimes extends to people. I let it happen to me.

Without ever having a conversation or interaction with a woman who used to live in my town, I let the opinions of others color my perception of her.

They didn’t like her and wanted to keep her at arm’s length. Based on them, I did as well. That is on me.

About a year later we found ourselves working side-by-side on a major project. We absolutely clicked and had so much fun. I regret how wrong I was to listen to others rather than making my mind up for myself. I probably let it happen other times, too. Who knows what I missed out on.

I didn’t disclose the destination of the visit my sister and I undertook in August. That was by intent.

You may want to go someday and your experience will be your own, not based on the recommendation of some or the criticism of others.

On our way home we re-read the article and laughed at how differently we now interpreted words like quaint, cozy and charming. And that’s exactly how it should be. We all have wonderful minds, imaginations and frames of reference through which we live our lives. So shut out the voices that tell you what you should or shouldn’t like, and instead go and experience it for yourself. There just might be wonderful surprises and tremendous laughter in store. That’s my outlook.

This means that while the person you work with may have extensive knowledge and training, they may also simply be a salesperson for the bank.

Health Hub The importance of colorectal cancer screenings Colorectal cancer kills more people than breast and prostate cancer put together. However, early detection greatly improves outcomes among diagnosed patients. Here’s what you should know about getting screened for this cancer.

Why get tested?

If detected early, the five-year survival rate for colorectal cancer patients is 90 per cent. However, only 39 per cent of cases are found at this stage.

Often, colorectal cancer doesn’t initially cause any symptoms. This is why being proactive about detection is vital.

Who should get tested?

People between the ages of 50 and 74 should undergo a fecal immunochemical test (FIT) and a fecal occult blood test (FOBT) every two years.

These tests detect traces of blood in the stool that can’t be seen with the naked eye, which could indicate a tumour. Out of 1,000 tests, an average of 36 will come back positive, prompting a colonoscopy. Out of 36

positive tests, only four will be due to the presence of cancer.

How can I get tested?

Ask your healthcare provider to prescribe a test.

You’ll then be referred to a collection centre and provided with a test kit containing detailed instructions. It’s also possible to take the test at home. Ask your doctor what options are available.

Public health agencies recommend that regular colorectal cancer screenings begin as soon as some-

one turns 50, regardless of symptoms. Being proactive is the only way to detect cancer early.

Millennials beware Colorectal cancer rates among young people are increasing. If you notice worrisome symptoms such as rectal bleeding or a change in bowel habits, consult a doctor without delay. While it may be due to a benign condition, young people affected with colorectal cancer are more likely to die because of a delay in diagnosis.

Cornerstone board gets back to business Following a twomonth summer break from regularly scheduled public meetings, the South East Cornerstone Public School Division’s board of directors got back to business in the conference room Sept. 18.

The board heard an in-person transportation appeal from Jeannine Real, who made an argument for a re-distribution or re-drawing of school bus routes in the

Storthoaks, Carlyle and Redvers region of the school division.

Using a rural municipality map, Real outlined where members of her extended family and other families with school-aged children, or those who are soon to be school-aged children, are seeking services to take these children to school in Redvers.

Chairwoman Audrey Trombley assured Real the board would discuss

and deliberate the appeal during an in-camera session following the regular public session later that afternoon.

Board members raised several questions and concerns regarding the request during Real’s presentation and she thanked them for their attention and interest following her 20-minute appeal.

Vice-chairwoman Carol Flynn, Cornerstone’s representative to the public section of the Saskatchewan School Board Associ-

ation (SSBA), delivered the message that they had launched a new program to promote public schools and their role in citizenship and democracy.

“There is a Citizenship Award we are now promoting. It is a monetary award for students, groups or classes,” said Flynn.

The public section award for students from Grade 1 to 8 has been set at $1,000 and a more extensive award is allocated for students from

Grade 9 to 12.

“It’s about promoting democratic values and public education and information is found on the Public Schools of Saskatchewan website,” Flynn said. “This is a three-year pilot project.

The responses will then be assessed.”

In response to questions from her fellow directors, Flynn added the project has received sponsorship support that helped launch this initiative.

Even though the set would not be a choice you’d make if you could start over again, adding in some character and revitalizing the entire room is possible and even easy if you do it right.

A nice pattern chair even in the blues and grey tones will really look nice with the brown and be a nice contrast. You’ll be shocked at how adding in some contrasting color will change the light and appearance in the room, reflecting and drawing your eyes to different places, creating a subtle visual change to the entire space and giving it a new feel.

The room above is quite interesting visually. The art is unique and provokes conversation and the rug is art in itself! The sofa looks comfy and inviting and the accessories and large green plant create balance. Now look at the four chairs below the picture. Imagine adding in each one individually and ask yourself in what way it changes the look of the room. Chair A adds a classic formal feel to the room and pulls our the dark frames and the dark hair in the women in the art. Chair B softens the feel of the room and adds a more casual airy feel, while chair C pulls out the caramel color of the throw hanging over the end of the sofa, and the tone of the wood accents as well as well as the skin tones in the art. Chair D instantly draws your eye to the live plant in the room and the Khaki tones in the rug. Each chair looks just as striking as the next but drastically changes the manner that your eye receives the room. Another room that can see a big change with just a little “something-something” is the kitchen. Pop some colour and contrast into those counter stools! You really have minimal chances in your kitchen because it is generally full of cabinets and windows. So, don’t take this opportunity lightly! Give your kitchen some pizazz and make a statement with some great red stools or even do what I like to do and choose 2 different colours and patterns. Then take your choice and add in some canisters or a nice bowl on your kitchen island, and VOILA! It really doesn’t have to be a huge cost to freshen your home, just listen to someone who can help you make the choice that will give you a great pop for your buck, and most of all be brave enough to take the chance and make a bold choice!

Jeff Cowan (Regina) attended the Harrison funeral on Sept. 21 and visited a few moments with his parents Gray and Edel before heading back to Carlyle and then to Regina.

Shelly Cowan, daughter Ainsley and Grandma Edel met up with daughter/sister Lacie and other friends in Carnduff at the Olive Branch on Sept. 26 to enjoy a birthday supper in honor of Lacie. Happy Birthday Lacie, may you have many more super days in the future.

Boy, oh boy what a fall – the weather has given us everything this harvest season – rain, more rain, hail, now snow and more rain. I don’t know when the guys will ever get back into the field. Not only does the grain, swathed or standing, have to be dry enough in order to be combined and to be stored in the granary until there’s a market for it. But the field its self, meaning the ground has to dry up in hopes that neither the combine nor the truck will get stuck – oh the joys of farming.

Good Luck guys – here’s hoping for better weather will be here soon and stay for the rest of the season.

It’s the fall/foul supper season now – so keep your eyes and ears open as to when there is one being held in or near your area. M-m-m such yummy food will be waiting for you to come on out and enjoy. I can hardly wait for the first one to be here.

I took time the other evening and brought in a few of my plants, didn’t want them to freeze.

Hopefully I can keep them alive until next spring so that they can go back outside. Yup, the fall clean up season is upon us and even though I hate to admit it – that white stuff will be here to stay.

It will soon be another early deadline on Oct. 10 for the Oct. 18th issue, otherwise the deadlines remain on Monday morning as scheduled for Oct. 7 for the 12 issues and then again for October 21 for the 25 issues. Confused?

Don’t worry it’ll turn out okay.

Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • If you are concerned about the manner in which an individual acts, say a child, you would normally bring it to the parents’ attention. This is often the way things get resolved. I remember as a child our neighbour told my mother her son utilized a word that starts with “F” and rhymes with the black disk that we smack around with a hockey stick. I ended up getting my mouth washed out with soap. After that I really worked on watching my use of profanity, for if I can get my mouth washed out with soap for what my brother did, who knows what would have happened if I got caught swearing.

• So the point of the above story is if you have concerns in relation to how we are doing our job or how our Members are acting or behaving, please come see me, call me or write me a letter or e-mail.

I am kind of like the parent and, although I will not wash their mouths out with soap or “spank” them, I can deal with them in other appropriate ways if it is deemed they have been, let us say unprofessional.

In addition, often when I explain what the Members were doing and why they were doing it I find out the clarity resolves many concerns. If the Members are in the wrong it is documented.

• Now I would like to respond to the individual that wrote us a note and put it outside our door but, well, it was nonsensical and beyond not liking the police and possibly our education system. I have no idea what the issue is or was.

• We had an interesting week. If you have been in a long-term relationship with an individual and you choose to advise the spouse about your long term relationship, we guarantee it will not go well.

Someone is going to get upset. Be it the spouse you were in the relationship with, the spouse you confronted or possibly even yourself. Our assault investigation continues.

• If you are acting suspiciously, parking in an odd place, or parking in an area where the businesses are closed, you will attract our attention or the attention of someone who may just call the Police. Recently we had a vehicle parked suspiciously and we arrested the driver for impaired driving. On another occasion, an individual chose to walk away from the vehicle we had stopped. They were identified and arrested for outstanding warrants. Ironically, if they had chosen to just sit in the vehicle, we would have likely never even inquired as to who they were. We call it “Spider Senses”. Everyone has them but Police Officers tend to develop extra sensitive “Spider Senses”.

• If you need the Police and it is not an emergency call your local Detachment, or you can call 310RCMP (7267) Please don’t call 911. Examples of an emergency would be if you are observing someone being assaulted, observing someone driving erratically, a motor vehicle collision with injuries or a fire.

Examples of non-emergency would be a hit and run,

Weekly RCMP report anything that happened hours or days before, or say an injured animal, say a kitten needing help.

• I often question things, sometimes I never get the answer. Recently I questioned myself. Did the semi driver that almost got hit by the train by Walpole even know the train almost struck them? If so, did they buy a lottery ticket?

• McLeod’s Auto Service was broken into and a vehicle stolen. Hopefully we will have found the black 2009 Pontiac Torrent with a Saskatchewan licence plate of 392 ITQ by the time you read this.

• We received a report of a 3-year-old without clothes, walking a dog. The parent was located and we contacted Social Services to ensure the parent had the support and also involved our Victim Services Unit. Apparently, the child was tired of potty training and fled the residence. We appreciate the caller that advised us of the child and we are happy the result of the investigation was not “crappy”.

• Before you allege your ex stole your mail and mailbox key and involve the Police, please take the time to look for it. It resolves the issue of you harassing your ex by making false allegations and more importantly resolves the Police getting involved.

• Folks, if you are angry and choose to yell, scream and swear in public, we will get involved and we can arrest you and we can charge you for “Causing a Disturbance”. Some people feel that profanity is acceptable. Sorry it is not. Remember in the old days you would have gotten your mouth washed out with soap.

• If your neighbour is upset about your dog being loose, please do not call the RCMP to complain that your neighbour is complaining and harassing you about your dog being loose. The easiest way to resolve the issue is deal with your loose dog. We understand people get frustrated, however, telling a Police Officer you will cause someone harm is not bright. We make good witnesses and it is an offence to threaten to cause someone harm.

• Unfortunately, we are encountering more and more people with mental health concerns. If you encounter someone that is causing you concern, please contact us. We will hopefully be able to assist in resolving things before it becomes an issue.

• We attended a residence after receiving a complaint of two family members fighting. Apparently once they realized the Police were coming, they realized it was more important to flee than to continue their aggressive actions. Patrols were made, however, they behaved for the remainder of the evening and avoided attracting any more attention to themselves.

• It seems every week we get several hit and run collisions. If you ever see someone strike another vehicle, please document what you observed and let the victim know. It is hard to fathom how often we have no suspects and no witnesses. We did have success on one occasion being we were notified imme-

Four (4’) feet in the front yard of any site excepting where a lot’s side property line constitutes a rear lot line of an abutting site, in which case the provision of 1. shall apply; 3. Eight (8’) feet in the case where a side yard is flanking a major roadway or municipal reserve parcel;

diately and, through our investigation, the suspect vehicle was seized. The operator was subsequently charged with failing to remain or report a collision - Court Appearance Required, operate an uninsured motor vehicle- $580 and drive with undue care and attention - $280.

• The public keeps calling in about erratic drivers. Although we don’t find them all we sure like looking for them. Please keep the calls coming in.

• Someone felt the need to vandalize a swather.

Two windows were broken. The cost to repair the windows was approximately $2500.00 • We know that “Homespun” is popular, so popular that people will sleep in their vehicle the night before to ensure they get in at the start of the show.

We found this after receiving a complaint from a concerned citizen. Realistically though, we like these calls. Better safe than sorry.

• We have a report that someone feels someone else is standing at the end of their driveway staring at them. This has apparently happened more than once, however, calling after the fact causes difficulty for our Members to investigate.

• We had a report of horses on the highway. We guess they were horsing around previous to our arrival and chose to avoid having to interact with the Police and explain their actions.

• How much damage can a raccoon do to a vehicle? Let us just say, a lot, especially when hit at highway speed. The vehicle required a tow truck.

• Two ATV’s were observed operating with the operators not wearing helmets. Members initiated their overhead lights causing both ATV’s to flee. One subsequently hit a chain link fence and the operator fell off. Gross signs of impairment were noted (over and above the fact the operator drove into a fence) and the driver was arrested. The accused subsequently provided two samples of their breath with the results being 280 mg%. The ATV was seized, as was the accused driver’s licence.

• While Members were enroute to an urgent call they had difficulty passing a vehicle that refused to pull over. Fortunately, one of our Traffic Members was able to pull the offending vehicle over. The driver was subsequently arrested for impaired driving and provided samples of 210/200 mg%. This was the second impaired driver arrested by that Member in one night.

• Members issued approximately 13 tickets and 17 warnings over the last six days.

• Tickets were issued for drive with undue care and attention - $280, no insurance/registration $580, fail to produce insurance/registration - $100, fail to wear approved eyewear and helmet on an ATV - $100, and most expensive speeding tickets were for exceeding 60 km/hour when passing an emergency vehicle - $554, exceed 60 km/hour when passing highway workers - $1,142 (ouch), and speeding $332.

Fornwald, a student services consultant, teamed up to present an oral and visual report to the division’s board of trustees during their Sept. 18 open business session.

“This is usually a collaborative team approach,” Kiliwnik said, referring to the professional practices in the schools as well as their presentation.

“Fair isn’t equal – fair means we all get what we need,” said Kiliwnik, supporting her opening statement with others.

Seeking out inclusion, acceptance and safety for all, the two women pointed out the supports students may require to eliminate their personal barriers to learning and how they can foster an attitude of respect, appreciation and acceptance of diversity.

The collaborative approach, they added, allows for positive problem solving, the sharing of ideas and parent engagement while providing an environment that is safe for the student both physically, culturally and emotionally.

Kiliwnik noted how some emotional outbursts are handled expertly with one on one engagements that get the student back into the classroom system efficiently and effectively

with little disruption.

The presentation to the board included data outlining that training to support behavioural interventions are implemented for staff with behavioural students requiring these services.

There were 10 trained staff members in the 2011-12 school year and there are now 14 trainers who train others who can focus on behaviour processes, training and re-certification.

Fornwald took the directors down a path that helped explain some of the “whys” and “hows” of certain behaviours and how the trained personnel are able to de-escalate issues so that they don’t reach a crisis level.

“It’s a step by step process, one step at a time until we find what works,” Fornwald said.

“We also have to be well aware of our own emotions and how we can switch off.”

If the crisis does escalate there are certain other strategies deployed, again, taking one step at a time to find one that works.

Sometimes that might involve removal of peers and dangerous objects and monitoring from a safe distance and no immediate interaction with the person in question until they demonstrate a calmer behaviour. Af-

ter that, they switch to a helping strategy to de-escalate the situation.

There are 220 Cornerstone staff members trained to deal with a variety of behavioural issues among student bodies within the division that has a total student population of about 8,300.

The women noted there are 10 students noted as having Level 1, or more intensive needs and close monitoring while another 30 have lesser levels of behavioural issues to address.

They also spoke about future planning and feedback they have received from teachers, administrators, educational assistants and other staff members regarding the roll out of these plans.

Estevan trustee Shari Sutter asked how students can be helped in dealing with parental issues.

Fornwald noted they are given some coping mechanisms and “while we may not be fixing, we’re helping them with strategies.”

The presentation was bolstered by three videos provided by consultants at three different schools who spoke of successful strategies they deployed to meet student behavioural challenges.

Lynn Little, the director of education for the South East Cornerstone Public School Division, introduced a pair of presenters to the school board members who were attending the Sept. 18 open business session in the division’s head office in Weyburn.

Little noted how supporting roles are in place to assist classroom teachers, and other support staff members in delivering successful conclusions for about 8,300 students within the division’s 38 facilities. One of these programs, however, does not have a dedicated facility, but rather embraces a number of sites as cyber learning opportunities are being increasingly embraced by a number of students and educators for a variety of reasons.

The early focus was on Cyber Stone, the online learning model used by Cornerstone to expand the reach out to students engaged in various learning projects and classes.

Jeff Walters, the co-ordinator of instructional technology, was joined by Susan Wilson, Cyber Stone’s principal, to walk the board members through an outline of what Cyber Stone offers and explore its successes and future plans.

“We are not a rogue element,” Walters explained in his opening

statement. “We follow Cornerstone’s system and adhere to their format and growth mindset while recognizing the barriers some students face and how they can overcome them.”

Using some testimonials as examples, the two presenters noted how Cyber Stone had grown from its early beginnings in 2006 when only a few subjects were offered to a few students in an online format.

It received a burst of growth with the official launch of Cyber Stone in the 2012-13 school year.

The growth continued in 2016-17 to include Grade 8 and 9 classes.

Up to that point, it had only been offered to the three more senior grades. Now students can fulfill all graduation requirements through Cyber Stone if needed.

Currently there are 46 courses offered and a 47th to be added in the second semester this year, and that will be creative writing 20.

There are 399 unique students comprising 667 course enrolments with 363 of those students currently enrolled in the first semester who are engaged in 533 courses such as accounting, agriculture production, English language, computer and environmental science, history, literature, psychology, social studies and more.

“We have a database for every student and we are gaining success with credit recovery programs,” said Wilson, adding the withdrawal rate is only four per cent on average and some of those may start again or complete a pro-

gram over the summer months. She also said students are surveyed for feedback every academic year-end.

“Some have anxiety issues, I know, for example, we had five in Grade 9 alone last year,” she said.

Psychology and math classes are the most popular within Cyber Stone, the two educators reported and the students earned 430 credits alone in the second semester of the previous school year and 220 credits were earned in the first semester.

A successful completion rate of 65 per cent was tabulated but only two per cent hit the “not completed” zone, they said in referencing their accompanying graphs and charts. In some instances (20 per cent) the student initiated a withdrawal while four per cent withdrew but intended to extend the opportunity to the following year while 161 students expressed interest but never started.

Some entries were refused or were registered in error. In total, Wilson and Walters said the Cyber Stone overall success rate, the graduation rate, was just shy of 91 per cent while the overall student population in Cornerstone, not in Cyber Stone programs, was just slightly over 91 per cent, so the variance was less than half a per cent.

Wilson and Walters explained there were about 28 per cent of the enrolled students who were not on track to graduation, but in many instances, it was revealed, they had

latched on to employment or other opportunities elsewhere and had, therefore, postponed or cancelled Cyber Stone programming.

Teacher and student engagement is strong within the program, said Wilson.

“Sometimes they don’t know what they’re getting into, so we have included an introductory course they complete before they get involved.”

The school has also introduced a communication laboratory to combat system integrity issues to ensure educational content is always accessible and to help eliminate academic dishonesty.

“We did some transition meetings with students and, in some instances, with parents as well to establish a relationship so we would know what is needed, but we always adhere to SECPSD policies, procedure and culture,” Wilson added.

The presenters also provided testimonials from students and instructors.

“Students do have to interact with us,” said Wilson.

Corrections are sometimes carried out through voice over applications and individualized assistance is offered when needed.

Special project credits are also available once they are documented and passed.

At the conclusion of their presentation, Walters and Wilson answered several questions regarding the Cyber Stone processes and the future plans for this growing initiative within the school division.

Arcola School welcoms Jacquie Walbaum, teaching Art and RTI, while Korinn Riddell is teaching a grade 4/5 split class.

Whitebear Education complex has three new teachers this school year. Nithya Sukumaran is responsible for high school classes, while Kelly Pike and Seraine Sunkawaste are new in the elementary classes.

In Carlyle April Eberts class has an intern, Leeza Currin, who is a 4th year student at the University of Regina.

By Linda Wegner For as long as I can remember, I’ve been intrigued, annoyed, confused, exhilarated, or/and enraged by politics. Even as a teen I recall curling up on the bed or chesterfield where I would put my ear close to the radio and listen to any political broadcast that could be reached with our economy-sized Motorola®.

The country in question didn’t have to be Canada, as long as it was election coverage; I didn’t even have to understand the political systems or the specific issues, it just had to be a rip-roaring chase to the finish line.

In trying to understand what made me so interested in the mechanics of democracy I also developed a deep sense of appreciation for the right to vote.

I can honestly say I probably can count on my fingers the federal, provincial or local elections in which I have failed to do so.

Sadly, my deep appreciation for freedom is now tainted with disappointment at what I see and hear.

I’ve learned that noble purposes are too often contaminated with less than noble ambitions.

In just a couple of weeks we’ll have the privilege and obligation to cast our ballots. This election has been rancorous in so many ways and I admit I’ve been tempted to ignore it.

The problem, though, is simple: if I don’t vote, I can’t complain but

even more importantly, I won’t have done my part to give thanks for the privilege of living in a democratic country.

To every candidate, cultivate honesty (I mean the real stuff, not just the words), personal integrity, a genuine regard for the dignity

of opponents that supersedes idealistic differences and an honest commitment to keep promises. If that’s you, you’ve got my vote! “[Live] as free people… but [live at all times] as servants of God.” 1 Peter 2: 16

Suspect appears in Estevan court after incident in Carnduff One person is facing charges for firing at a police vehicle in Carnduff last week.

According to a report from the Saskatchewan RCMP’s media relations, an officer from the Carnduff RCMP detachment was transporting a 65-yearold male suspect to his residence in Carnduff on Thursday night. The man had been arrested, charged and released for impaired driving and refusing to submit to a breath test.

“The accused had been co-operative with the police and was being turned over to his spouse at their residence until his court appearance,” stated a news release from the RCMP. He was taken out of the police car by the officer outside of the residence. They moved inside the double garage attached to the house where they were met by the spouse of the accused.

According to the news release, the accused then told the officer he had to go to the bathroom. The officer told him not to leave, but the accused continued to walk away toward a door within the garage. The officer asked the spouse if there was a bathroom in that area; she reported the door does not lead to a bathroom.

The officer got closer to the unknown door when he heard the distinctive sound of a round of a shotgun being chambered. The officer drew his pistol and backed away from the door as the accused exited the room carrying a shotgun pointed at the ceiling. The officer told him to drop the shotgun.

“The accused instead told his spouse to open the garage door,” the news release stated. “He exited the garage and fired rounds at the police car before fleeing on foot. The officer was not in the police car, but still

in the garage.”

The officer quickly moved the spouse to safety inside the residence while tracking the armed individual with his pistol.

Additional RCMP members and a police dog were called to the scene and set a perimeter to contain the accused.

Shortly after the police dog arrived at the scene, the accused walked out of a nearby wooded area, unarmed, and surrendered.

The shotgun was recovered from the wooded area where the accused was hiding. The accused was taken into custody. The accused will make his first court appearance Sept. 30 in Estevan Provincial Court.

Wilfred “Shorty” Belmore of Lacombe, AB, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at the age of 93. He is survived by a loving wife, Ealfeen Belmore; a daughter, Marion (Keith) Lacey; a son, Allan (Dana) Belmore; and is the cherished grandpa to his 9 grandkids. Wilfred also leaves to mourn two brothers Joe Belmore and Marcel Belmore.

He was predeceased by his parents, Elmer and Yvonne Belmore; his mother in law, Natalie Pohl; two sisters, Lima Wilson and Leda Belmore, and a brother, Armond Belmore.

A Celebration of Life was held at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Lacombe, AB, on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Wilfred’s name to the Lacombe Palliative Care Society, PO Box 5576, Lacombe, AB, T4L 1X2.

Karen Mae Bast of Carlyle, Saskatchewan, formerly of Oxbow, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2019 at the age of 76 years.

Karen was born on September 8, 1943 at Bienfait, Saskatchewan, and lived there with her parents, Parker & Thelma Dunbar, and younger brother, Lyle, until the family moved to Oxbow in 1949. Karen attended school in Oxbow and then moved to Regina in 1960 where she worked at SaskPower for a short time. Upon returning home to Oxbow one weekend she met the love of her life, Joe Bast. On October 12, 1963, Karen & Joe were married in Oxbow, Saskatchewan. Over their years together they lived in Estevan, Oxbow, and White Bear Lake. It was in Oxbow where they started their family and were blessed with two children Ryan (1977) & Jolene (1979). Karen loved animals, and the family owned several beloved dogs. Karen and Joe spent many happy years in Oxbow – they loved to entertain, socialize, and spent many an evening playing games and laughing with their best friends and neighbours, Barb & Carl Biberdorf. Throughout the years, Karen worked for the Town of Oxbow, then at the high school teaching accounting and typing, and finally for the Oxbow School Division. Karen was a very active member of the Oxbow community, giving much of her time to the United Church as choir director, member of the Drama Club, and as a Girl Guide Leader. Karen was also a coach and advocate for athletes involved in the Special Olympics. Karen was an avid gardener, a fabulous baker, an amateur photographer, and a crafty scrapbooker. She was a talented singer and pianist who enjoyed sharing her love of music with others.

Karen enjoyed taking road trips, and has been coastto-coast in Canada, visited the British Isles, and made several trips to the USA to places such as Disneyland and Arizona. Karen loved nature and spent much time in the outdoors gardening, walking, & camping, but she especially enjoyed making memories at the family cabin in White Bear Lake.

Karen spent the last 15 years of her life living at the Moose Mountain Lodge in Carlyle with Joe close by her side living in White Bear Lake. Karen and Joe celebrated 55 years of marriage last fall. Our family would like to express our appreciation for the compassionate care provided to Karen by the nurses and care workers at the Moose Mountain Lodge in Carlyle.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church, Oxbow, Saskatchewan with Reverend Jackie Van’t Voort officiating. Scattering will take place at a later date.

Donations in memory of Karen may be made to the Moose Mountain Lodge Auxiliary, or to St. Paul’s United Church in Oxbow.

Field set for federal election

The deadline to be declared a candidate was Monday afternoon.

Hicks said she decided to run because there are a lot of people who might be more likely to vote if the NDP had a candidate that they knew.

“I feel like me being from the riding is probably very beneficial … if you want to connect with the people who live in the riding,” said Hicks.

She believes some rural residents don’t feel like they’re important. Some people running family farms are having a hard time making ends meet. But she believes there are other issues in the riding besides agriculture.

“As a kid, I did feel like politics did not mean anything to us out there. It never really seemed to make a difference who got in or who got in for the rest

She still returns to the constituency often, as her family still resides in Souris-Moose Mountain.

While she believes it will take a lot of hard work to win the riding in this election, and she wants to get out and talk to people, she’s not sure how much she will be able to in the remaining weeks of the campaign, since she lives several hours away.

She plans to attend at least one of the candidates’ forums, and do some door-knocking during the Thanksgiving long weekend.

This is not the first time she has run for the NDP in an election.

She was a candidate for the party in the 2016 provincial election in the Moosomin constituency. She finished second behind Steven Bonk.

“I won’t be so nervous. It was my first time running, so I had no feel for the area or anything like that. I haven’t lived in a rural setting for a while, so I thought it would be very neat to go out and connect with some rural residents.”

The Liberal Party’s candidate in SourisMoose Mountain for the upcoming federal election is a student currently enrolled at the University of Regina.

Javin AmesSinclair is a member of the Zagime Anishinabek, formally known as Sakimay First Nation. He is currently attending the university’s Campion College and majors in psychology.

Born and raised in Regina, AmesSinclair’s mother is of English and Irish ancestry and his father is a member of the Zagime Anishinabek.

Javin works part-time as a tutor, helping students in science, math and English.

“The involvement of both cultures for Javin has taught him very well on how to treat others and live a very mindful life which is one of respect, love and kindness with all people,” his bio states.

He says he is a Liberal because of their commitment to the following issues: Indigenous self-government, climate change and a strong global presence, which was one of their policy statements.

Ames-Sinclair is an active volunteer in his community and is involved with the multicultural dance group for the Spring Free from Racism group. He has worked on several campaigns at the federal, provincial and In-

digenous levels of government.

He is also the Liberal Party of Canada’s provincial youth representative and volunteers with several non-profit organizations, including Queen City Local 34, dancing and jigging.

“Javin is committed to helping others through politics in establishing good government policies,” his bio states.

The other candidates in the riding are Robert Kitchen of the Conservative Party, Judy of the Green Party, Travis Patron of the Canadian Nationalist Party and Philip Zajac of the People’s Party of Canada.

The federal election will be Oct. 21.

Moms are at it again Submitted by Tara Cure Moms on a Community Mission are back at it this year with some fun new ideas for their Small Business Christmas Party. Directors Tara Cure and Bobbi Wolbaum have stated; we listened to peoples comments and suggestions from last year, and decided we really needed to amp things up a bit. We will be hosting at Arcola Prairie Place, the capacity and the set up is exactly what we need to make an event of this caliber happen.

Last year Moms hosted a full evening, cocktails, dinner, entertainment with DJ and Dancing afterwards to a sold out show, and they are hoping to do the same this year. Tara includes “because we are hosting in Arcola, we really want to give back to both communities. Which is why we have decided to split the proceeds this year between Arcola Rink, and Carlyle Playschool. Both organizations play key roles in our area, and without them residents would be forced to live without, or drive further out of town. The moment people are driving out of town, is the moment we lose even more local income. Arcola Rink is raising money for some much needed repairs. Meanwhile Carlyle Playschool is needing to expand, and looking for more space to be able to accommodate the number of students they have each year.”

Tara says; I look after planning the events for my co-workers anyway. And in previous years we have had to travel as far as Regina for things to do, so why not just put that event on right here in our own community. Employers can now just contact us, let us know how many people will be

attending and we will send an invoice for the tickets. That’s it. The only detail they need to worry about is letting their employees know when and where. On the flip side of that, this event is not company specific. If you’re looking for a super fun night out with friends or family then this is the answer for that too. We have arranged for a Hypnotist to entertain the show this year. He travels around the world entertaining guests on board luxury cruise lines. The evening will include a fully catered meal with a spread of fantastic desserts, cash bar, prizes and finally a DJ and dancing to carry the night on. We are only days into finalizing details and are already 30% sold out, so anyone that is interested can either contact us via Facebook at Moms On A Community Mission Inc, or call/text Tara 306-575-9234. Tickets are $55 each, we can do single tickets or accommodate multiple tables. We also need to make it known that we will be providing safe rides home after the event, between Arcola and Carlyle. We want to be certain that everyone is getting home to their loved ones this holiday season.

Moms On A Community Mission Inc is a non-profit organization located in Carlyle. Directors Tara Cure, Bobbi Wolbaum, and Jennifer Deimuth have worked with a crew of volunteers to raise and donate back over $20,000 in 2018 alone. This includes money to Carlyle Playground fund, Carlyle Rink, and Kidsport to name a few.

Carlyle and Redvers golfers win provincial titles Golfers from Carlyle and Redvers won a provincial title this past weekend.

Kaysha Turner from Gordon F. Kells High School and Jade Krainyk from Redvers School were part of the Team South East entry that won the girls team title at the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association’s provincial championships at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course in Estevan on Sept. 28 and 29.

A change in format for this year saw golfers compete as part of a regional entry instead of a school team. Turner and Krainyk qualified for Team South East by finishing in the top four at regionals earlier in September.

Team South East had a two-day total of 371, thanks to a 189 in the first round and a 182 in the second. They were second after the opening round, sitting four strokes behind North Central, but rallied in Round 2 to win by one stroke over the Battle West region.

North Central finished third with a 373.

The top two of four scores from each hole contributed to the team total.

Krainyk and Turner also competed individually. Krainyk wound up in 10th spot with a 205 total, thanks to a 108 in the first round and a 97 in the second.

Turner was 31st with a 288. She shot a 159 in the first round and a 129 in the second.
