Bourassa officially opens Carlyle store

By Rick Major When you get the chance to talk to anyone connected with E. Bourassa & Sons, it does not take long before the conversation turns to the importance of family and community. It starts with the 4th generation of family members who have carried the traditions intertwined in a business enjoying yet another expansion in the network of stores now dotting communities in Assiniboia, Pangman, Radville, Weyburn and Carlyle.

It was back in January 2018 when Carlyle was first introduced to the nearly 100-year-old company at a two-day meet and greet. At the time, owner and general manager Kurtis Bourassa expressed his commitment to the local community and bringing the Bourassa brand of service and knowledge in the form of a 20,000 square-foot facility on a 20-acre site in Carlyle.

It was in 1924 when Emile Bourassa opened the first store in Radville supplying coal and

wood. Later, Massey Harris, John Deere and Oliver Cockshutt farm equipment was added to the merchandise mix.

Today New Holland farm equipment is a major partner along with other quality brands such as Bourgault, Morris, MacDon, and Versatile.

With the decision to open a fifth location in Carlyle, the four company partners (all greatgrandchildren of Emile) have all had the opportunity to put their mark on a true family business

according to Kurtis. “All four partners actually work in the dealership and the values passed down from past generations are still as important to us as they were in the beginning, almost 100 years ago.”

With a commitment to using many local contractors, Kurtis looked up at the banner on the wall as he spoke to a group of guests at the official Carlyle grand opening on October 18th.

“Our company slogan is ‘Where People Make the Difference’ and that’s really important to us. Our employees at all of our stores have close ties to family, to agriculture and to their communities.” He added that Carlyle currently has 13 full-time employees and there is room for growth.

Currently Bourassa has over 130 employees.

What all share is a commitment to selling an experience and creating long-term relationships. “That’s important because we don’t just sell a product. We bring customers into our family.”

Along with $10,000 in prizes to hand out, the grand opening event was well attended under a beautiful sunny fall sky. After the official ribbon cutting, those in attendance gathered inside to view some of the farm equipment on display, visit the trade show booths set up from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as well as the information sessions including Brian Perillat from Canfax, Chris Morson from Farmer’s Edge and Ken Evans along with Brady Kapovic from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.

Legalized pot more of a future problem

By Murray Mandryk So marijuana became legal in Canada last week.

It likely hasn’t changed your life much.

Most people (an estimated 85 per cent) have either never smoked pot or smoked only on an experimental.

As such, most of you are unlikely to be impacted by federal and provincial laws and rules governing marijuana as a legal substance.

Strict laws and rules may be disincentive enough to keep non-user from becoming users.

As is the case with alcohol, you have to be 19 years old. While debate during the Saskatchewan Party leadership did discuss increasing the legal age to 25 years, it was decided it should be the same as the current legal drinking age in this province.

The question is: Will those 18 years and under be more enticed to use marijuana in the future because of last week’s legalization? (More on that in a moment.)

First, though, consider the disincentives there are for non-user to ever become a users.

There are no stores yet open in Saskatchewan, but there will be only 51 stores opened in this province. That may seem a lot, but it pales in comparison with the province’s 700 retail outlets, all the bars, restaurants, hotels and clubs licensed to sell booze and even the charity or special occasion permits.

If you want booze, it’s really just around the corner. That won’t be the case for pot.

Once you purchase your marijuana (no more than 30 grams at a time or you face a $200 fine) you must take its straight home. Neither you nor any passengers can smoke it in a vehicle.

You can smoke in your home, but only if it’s your home. If it’s a condo, apartment building or a rental property, it’s up to board, management or property owner.

In Saskatchewan, smoking in outdoor community parks, sidewalks, playgrounds, daycares, theatres (in-door or outdoor) are all out.

Of course, there is the great outdoors, although that is limited as well. While smoking marijuana will be allowed in campers, tents or around the campfire (confined to your campsite), it won’t be allowed elsewhere in provincial and federal parks. Interestingly, such smoking provincial parks are subject to seasonal fire bans.

But while all of the above might be more of a deterrent to non-users, will it really be a deterrent to already heavy-to-moderate users?

There are an estimated 4.6 million such users in Canada and their habits are likely to be encouraged by the fact that they no longer face the prospects of a criminal record.

But here’s another way to look at it: If such users are already willing to risk fines and criminal records, what really changed last week for them?

Well, one thing that’s change is the risk of prosecution, which has been changing for a considerable time, anyway.

According to government statistics, marijuana-related crimes have been on a five-year decline, falling 11 per cent in Canada and 17 per cent in Saskatchewan in 2016.

Unfortunately that’s not the end of this story.

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) very much fears an increased in cannabis-impaired driver (although they acknowledge alcohol impairment will be a far bigger worry).

And then there is the issue of the next generation growing up with marijuana now legal and more socially acceptable.

Yes, it remains illegal for those under 19 years to smoke marijuana, but how effectively does a legal drinking age work when it comes to stopping underage drinkers?

There are ample studies suggesting that marijuana use does affect developing younger brains, so this what impact legalized pot use may have on the younger generation is a legitimate issue.

Maybe it’s less about what’s happening now than how last week’s legalization might impact people down the road.

There’s more to me than chromosomes A friend of mine was learning dialogue for a promotional video she had been cast in. Just prior to taping she was given a set of blocking notes and discovered that whereas some of the others in the video were named, she was simply noted as the female. She brought considerable expertise and experience to the project yet My Outlook was made to feel her appearance Shelley Luedtke was requested simply for the sake of gender diversity.

California has a new law mandating companies have at least one female on its board by the end of 2019. By the end of 2021 the numbers are to increase proportionally. Financial penalties will be imposed for those not in compliance; $100,000 initially and $300,000 for further violations. California State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson said “gender diversity on corporate boards is associated with increased profitability, performance, governance, innovation, and opportunity.” I guess these companies weren’t already aware they were in the business of profitability. Thank goodness someone pointed that out to them.

I received an honour in university called the Louise McKinney Scholarship, an award named after a woman born in 1868. She was a leader, activist, organizer and the first woman sworn in to the Alberta Legislative Assembly. To be eligible for the scholarship I had to be a Canadian citizen, Alberta resident, and full-time student nominated by my university. Nothing about gender. But shouldn’t an award intended to honour a trailblazing woman automatically be awarded to a woman? Well, if movements across some campuses get their way, the answer is yes.

I recognize I live a life that is privileged. I didn’t have to fight for pay equity or the right to vote.

Monumental efforts and tremendous sacrifices were made by people that came before me and I am a grateful beneficiary. The fight continues in some sectors where further equality is needed, but in other

areas what is being fought for now; parity or partiality?

In the early 1970’s the top five orchestras in the United States had fewer than 5% women. By 1980 it was 10%, and soon jumped to 25%. Women now outnumber men in some places. Those doing the hiring must have been told to increase the quota of female musicians, right? Wrong. They simply changed the way auditions were held. Candidates began auditioning behind screens so that decisions were based entirely on musicianship. Imagine being assessed on talent and ability alone. Isn’t that what we should all want?

Few applications or board appointments can be handled this way but it is a lesson in what happens when candidates are evaluated on what they bring, and not looked at as a requirement to fulfill mandated quotas. Women want a place at the table--not be a placeholder.

There is another piece of the California legislation that is intriguing. It states a female is “an individual who self-identifies her gender as a woman, without regard to the individual’s designated sex at birth.” That is the irony in all this for me. We are increasingly being asked to move toward recognizing a genderless society--or at least one in which we each get to form our own definition of gender. We are told there should be no designation strictly male or female. These boxes are being removed from some birth certificates and forms. So which is it?

Should gender define who sits on a board or is there no longer reason to consider gender?

Being female is a piece of who I am, as are any aptitudes and abilities I might have been born with.

The rest is shaped by each experience and individual that has left an imprint on each moment. My faith, education, relationships, resume and interests have allowed me to grow and develop in each role and responsibility I have taken on. But no matter what opportunities might come my way I want to know it was because of my character and not my chromosomes. We don’t want any achievement diminished by giving an impression it came, not because of A’s, but because of XX’s. That’s my outlook.

Know what type of retirement plan your employer offers • A Defined Benefit (DB) pension plan provides a pre-set pension for your lifetime from the time you retire. With a DB plan, the amount of your pension benefit is set according to your length of service and your salary, and may or may not be indexed to inflation.

• A Defined Contribution (DC) pension plan does not guarantee the amount of your future benefits.

Your retirement income for a DC plan depends on accumulated contributions and the investment returns earned by these contributions.

• A Group RRSP can be offered by your employer in

addition to, or instead of, a formal pension plan. You may be required to make the full contributions or your employer may subsidize them – in either case, the total contributions to your Group RRSP and any personal RRSPs cannot exceed your personal annual maximum contribution limit as set by the Canada Revenue Agency.

• Deferred Profit Sharing Plans (DPSP) are paid for by an employer and often restrict investment to the employer’s stock. The retirement benefit depends on how well the investment performs over time.

Know about potential limitations and gaps in your health benefits plans • Group benefit plans may not provide all of the

coverage you require. For example, group disability insurance can have vital limitations or gaps. Most plans cover only a percentage of your salary and ignore any pre-disability income from overtime and bonuses.

• If you and your spouse both belong to work-related plans, you may be doubling up on coverage and costs. Compare your individual plans and eliminate dual-coverage items.

2. A targeted warm-up: Do exercises that are similar to the movements you’ll be performing during your workout, focusing on the muscles you’ll be using.

Still don’t feel like you have enough time? Warming up doesn’t necessarily mean that your workout needs to take longer. Simply starting gently and progressively increasing the intensity of your workout is a warm-up in itself.

Receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can triple a person’s chances of surviving cardiac arrest. This is because CPR keeps vital organs oxygenated until the heart starts to beat again.

When disaster strikes unannounced, paramedics may not be able to respond to a medical emergency with their usual promptness. Knowing these basic techniques could very well save the life of someone you love.

BACK-BLOWS FOR CHOKING The Red Cross now recommends administering back blows before attempting the Heimlich manoeuvre. If someone is choking, have them stand in a slightly bent-over position and deliver five hard blows with the heel of your hand between their shoulder blades. This should dislodge any object obstructing the airways, but in the event that it fails, the next step is to administer five Heimlich thrusts. Alternate between back blows and Heimlich thrusts until the object becomes dislodged or the person stops breathing. If the latter occurs, start administering CPR.

The pressure alone should be enough to start the clotting process. Never apply a tourniquet to stop bleeding: this technique is only used when a limb can no longer be saved and will need to be amputated.

FIRST AID Basic first aid training will allow you to learn all the above skills and more. While taking a course delivered in your community by a reputable organization-YMCA, Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, etc. — is a great way to learn, very affordable (or even free) educational material can also be found online.

Leonard and Lil Patton left on Oct. 1 for Choiceland, SK where they visited with Len’s brother Donald and Linda. They also attended a funeral for Len’s cousin Doreen Pruden on Oct. 6 in Nipawin.

The community of Alida extends their condolences to the Petterson family of Manor on the death of Gordon Petterson at the ae of 80 years on Oct. 13 in Wawota. Gordon was well known as he had referred many hockey games for senior and minor teams in the surrounding area. His funeral service was held Oct. 20 at Manor Legion Hall with interment at

Manor Cemetery.

Attending the fall supper at Glen Ewen on Oct. 15 from Alida were Jim and Mary Boettcher, Faye Walker, Gray and Edel Cowan, Paul and Marnia Poulsen (sorry if I missed anyone, but that was who I noticed).

There was lots of delicious food and scrumptious desserts as always – keep up the great work guys and gals.

Denis and Norma Lamontagne have returned home after spending several days on a trip to visit family.

They travelled to Swift Current to visit with Lea and Dennis Kushner and then on to Calgary to see Michele and Mike Taillon, Sam and Jake. They also visited with Rennee Lamontagne and Emett at Canmore and Denis’ cousin, Ron Lamontagne at Sicamous. On their return home they stopped at each of these stops again.

Visiting with Shirley Corkish last week were Jeff Corkish, Owen, Addie and Mason from Cottage Grove, Minn. Jeff was here for his annual hunting trip.

Roy Bortolotto spent last week in Saskatoon where he was taking continuing education at Ancient Spirals Retreat.

Congratulations to Angie Werner-Paterson on the opening of her new business, “Hidden Gems”.

An appreciative group gathered at the United Church on Oct. 20. They took part in a talk by Lorne Calvert who reminisced about his early years in Saskatchewan. The question and answer period covered issues in the church (Lorne is an ordained minister in the United Church) and political issues (Lorne was a MLA for 13 years and the Premier of Saskatchewan for six years).

We also reconnected with Ross McMurtry who came to Wawota as a first time minister in 1952. A potluck supper concluded the evening.

Sympathy to the family and friends of Doug Wight. He passed away on Oct. 17 at the age of 60 years and leaves wife Sherry, daughters Brittany and Rianne and families and mother Gertie Wight-Condie. A funeral service was held on Oct. 24 at the Wawo-

A recent holiday to the Hawaiian island of Kauai was enjoyed by Eileen Shatford, accompanied by brother Glenn of Golden BC. They spent two weeks sight seeing and visiting many beaches with sister Janice as their tour guide.

Janice has lived in Oahu for some 35 years. One highlight of the trip was to attend Queen Emmalina’s festival of many Hula dancing groups each showing honor to the Queen, by presenting a gift wrapped in Banana or Ti leaves, an age old tradition. The Queen is a direct descendent of the Royalty that existed before Hawaii became a state of the USA. The temperature was 80-89 F. Eileen was so happy to have missed the two snows that occurred in her absence.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the Leveille and Jensen families on the death of Dolly Leveille who passed away on Oct. 22 at the age of 96 years in Estevan.

Before we know it October will be over, only a week and a half left and it’s good bye October – remember that the little goblins will be out and about on the 31st, let’s hope the weatherman will co-operate and give us nice weather for Halloween. Happy Halloween to everyone.

Fabien Sylvestre 1931 - 2018

Fabien Robert Alexander Sylvestre was born on September 29, 1931 to parents, Regis and Louise Sylvestre in Bellegarde, SK and passed away on October 6, 2018 at his home in Tiger Lily Way in the Redvers Health Centre. He took his schooling at Bellegarde and Kelvindale Schools and Gravelbourg College in Saskatchewan. He was employed helping build the pipeline during the 1950s and returned to the family farm and continued working the land he loved until his retirement.

Fabien was active in sports in his younger years - baseball, curling, roller skating, hockey, golf, tennis he enjoyed all of them. But what he enjoyed most of all was making music. First with his trumpet and then as a drummer. He played trumpet in the marching band while attending Gravelbourg College and he played in many dance bands around the surrounding area. To name a few - The Tune Toppers, Ray McNeil Band, Olson’s Band, KO & Friends and enjoyed making music with many different band members over the years.

Fabien loved to dance and from a young age attended dances with his sisters and still danced and played music until failing health in 2008 didn’t allow him to continue.

Fabien’s memory will be forever cherished by his loving wife Hazel, who he married in 2005; her son Travis (Monique) Otto; grandchildren, Emily, Brandon and Parker Otto, as well as his sister-in-law Mildred Sylvestre; Hazel’s sister Judy (Wilf) Wahl and brother Dennis (Pat) Steer. He will also be lovingly remembered by his niece Bernadette (Craig) Duncan and nephews, Marcel (Linda) Dauvin, Jean-Marie Dauvin, Gilles Dauvin, Regis Sylvestre (Stephanie Barnes), Trevor Sylvestre, Garry (Jo-Anne) Sylvestre and Neal (Pauline) Sylvestre. His great nieces and nephews, Michel, Joel and Rachelle Dauvin; Leslie Dube and Shawn Duncan; Tavian Barnes; Dana and Kyle Sylvestre; Travis and Lenay Sylvestre; Morgan, Lynden, Holly and Abby Sylvestre, will also cherish his memory, as well as four great, great nephews and many cousins.

Family was very important to Fabien and he loved and was loved as a son, brother, uncle, husband, stepfather and Papa.

Fabien was predeceased by his parents, Regis and Louise Sylvestre; brothers, Omer and Romeo and sisters, Cecile (Lucien) Dauvin, Charlotte Sylvestre and Germaine Sylvestre.

The Funeral Mass was held on Friday, October 12, 2018 at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, Redvers, with Pallbearers Reg Sylvestre, Garry Sylvestre, Neal Sylvestre, Trevor Sylvestre, Craig Duncan and Travis Otto carrying him to his �inal resting place at the Redvers Town Cemetery.

The Family would like to thank Rev. Wilfred Calinawan for presiding over the Mass, the choir and musicians who provided the music, the ladies of the Parish of Our Lady of Fatima for the lunch and Hall Funeral Services (Dustin Hall and Marilynn Garnier) for their assistance in our �inal good-bye to Fabien. Thank you to the relatives and friends who came from near and far to celebrate his life.

We would also like to thank the caregivers at the Long Term Care Homes in Redvers and Wawota who cared for Fabien where he made his home during the past �ive years.

The Long Good-bye is over. Rest in Peace Fabien, until we meet again Beyond the Rainbow’s End. Love Hazel and your Family

What the Cannabis Act means to agriculture

By Calvin Daniels So the Cannabis Act came into force Oct. 18.

Depending upon where you live in Canada the reaction has been quite different.

In British Columbia the potential for the change to create economic activity and to allow recreational use of a product many see as less dangerous than cigarettes and alcohol has been spurred by a province taking a very liberal approach to how to implement the new Act. In Saskatchewan the government has been a rather vocal opponent of the federal government’s plan to legalize cannabis from the outset, and the system surrounding the Act’s implementation is more guarded here to say the least.

In terms of agriculture the new Act isn’t going to mean a great deal since the cannabis one will buy in the shops will be grown under some rather strict licenses, at least initially as the overall system has something of a developmental learning curve ahead of it.

But there is another side to this story, or at least potentially another side, which should have farmers much more intrigued.

With marijuana now available in select stores, the cloud of arrest for using the product recreationally blown away, it could open the door to more attention being paid to hemp, and its potential across a range of sectors.

“Hemp, or industrial hemp (from Old English hænep), typically found in the northern hemisphere, is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for the industrial uses of its derived products,” details Wikipedia. “It is one of the fastest growing plants and was one of the first plants to be spun into usable fiber 10,000 years ago. It can be refined into a variety of commercial items including paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, and animal feed.”

It is hemp’s ability to annually produce large quantities of biomass which can be used in such a diverse range

of products which has long intrigued producers. The crop could create a viable rotational crop option, for producers, which would also take them into markets away from traditional cereal and oilseed ones.

Hemp has never really gotten off the ground as a farm crop because of it familial connection.

“Although cannabis as a drug and industrial hemp both derive from the species Cannabis sativa and contain the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), they are distinct strains with unique phytochemical compositions and uses,” states Wikipedia. “Hemp has lower concentrations of THC and higher concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD), which decreases or eliminates its psychoactive effects.”

Now with the Cannabis Act in place the opportunity exists for greater research and development of hemp both in terms of being a farm crop, and in terms of its end uses.

Long term that may prove the most important aspect of what the new Act came to allow.

Maryfield Sunrise Villa News Submitted by Janet Mark

The United Church brought us Communion this week, with Roy Bortolotto, Charlotte Kovach and Janet Lemon assisting. The Sinclair Mennonite Choir came Sunday afternoon.

On Monday, Maryfield mourned the life of Alan Adair; our last Veteran of World War II, and longest resident of the Villa. The highlight of the funeral service was the choir, who sang the WWII song, White Cliffs of Dover; truly a song of hope and resurrection. Six of Alan’s grandchildren gave his eulogy, at the St. Andrew’s United Church.

Visitors who signed the Guest Book this week included: Linda Mulligan, Elkhorn, with Freda Longman; Clayton Jensen, who had 2 meals with his mother, Ferne Mills; Leanne Jackson, for a quiet visit with Alice. Wendy Greenbank, Sherry Wilson, Andrea Kosior and Mark visisted Ruth Holstrom.

Carlotte Kovach brought a movie and popcorn, plus her weekly bag of books from the library. Larry and Marion Husband had dinner with Irene. Other visitors were Sharon, Murray and Rea Cameron, from San Diego, California.

A set of new armchairs have replace the old yellow ones. The Bag Lady has gathered up many of the leaves and our Maintenance man and Town helper, Randy, cleaned out the eaves troughs. The walkers have seen and heard skeins of geese going over. Blue jays are raiding the feeder; and a fox, chased by 2 little dogs, trying to escape from the courtyard.

Circle of Friends remembered the Angels in our Midst: People who have appeared to help us in need, or whom we have been able to help.

Someone helped change a tire, for a lady in distress.

Neighbours rallied to finish a farmer’s harvest, after an accident or bereavement. Freda had helped a Grade 10 student with Correspondence lessons, in her country school. The men had been part of building bees, or paid a neighbour back for helping build a house, when it was his turn. Early doctors and nurses drove through storms to deliver babies.

A nurse newly graduated from University Hospital helped with an incubator baby. Anne Way, and all public Health nurses, are Angels to some of us.

Floor Curling improved when the Committee laid out both Houses. Fred Krukoff and Doris Erickson helped four people who sat in chairs to play in the north House. Ted, with Grace Toms playing and acting as “Gofer”, helped those who were in wheel chairs. We plan to challenge the staff.
