From Front page - Creative Tables

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Creative Tables is a fundraiser for the “Look Good Feel Good” foundation. The organization raises money for woman living with cancer. October is cancer awareness month.

Thursday, Oct. 17 was the event’s 12th year, held at Prairie Place in Arcola. The event is made special by the hard working and energetic co-ordinator and host, Darlene Olsen.

From the moment one walks through the door you notice the effort that has gone into this night’s gala.

Arcola Daycare volunteers greeted the guests as they arrived.

These volunteers contribute in every capacity to the night’s success, setting up the venue,

bartending, reception, clean up and whatever needs to be done.

This year there were 41 sponsored tables, each one with a theme picked by the business or individual sponsor.

The tables are all beautifully decorated.

As well as the sponsored tables, there was a silent auction consisting of 120 items donated by businesses and individuals from afar and locally. In addition, you could purchase a raffle ticket on a chance to win a trip to a Winnipeg Jets game.

At the start of the evening’s program, Darlene Olsen welcomed everyone, followed by Nancy Loire saying Grace. The meal was then served by the each table’s host. The meal consisted of a sal-

ad, chicken breast and a delicious lasagna. Each table is served a different dessert unique to the table’s theme. The table’s dessert I was seated at was “Chocolate Satisfaction” and the chocolate cake dessert was supreme. The strawberry Pavlova dessert on the next table looked very inviting as well.

Darlene Olsen returned to the podium after the meal and announced the evening’s guest speaker, who is a lady living with cancer, was unable to attend.

The importance of the night is heartfelt by all!

Arcola Daycare board member, Jade Moore, spoke next and thanked all those that have volunteered and worked to make this evening a success.

Shae and Hannah Johnston took to the stage where they entertained the crowd with three songs, “Leaving on a Jet Plane”, “Homecoming Queen” and “Girl”. They received a zealous applause.

Ghislaine Carter then read a letter on behalf of Christine Legg, who was unable to be in attendance, and it explains the workings of the “Shoe Box Project”, which is a foundation

that has raised nine million dollars for women in shelters that are victims of partner violence.

Kim Craig was next to speak on behalf of “Look Good Feel Good”.

She is from Mary Kay’s corporate office in Mississauga, Ontario. She explained the importance of the foundation which provides support to 10,000 women each year. It is represented in 110 hospitals and cancer sites across Canada and

has programming in 26 countries.

The evening had a large number of first-timers attending.

This was an evening everyone attending will remember. It is attended by all ages and has raised $700,000 since its formation. This community event is most admirable and makes a difference to all those that it benefits.

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Cody Fitzpatrick is the son of Tyler and Amanda Fitzpatrick of Glen Ewen, SK. Cody, who is 16 years of age and in grade 10, is grabbing the bull by the horns.

While some youths would choose gaming or hockey, at the age of nine, Cody chose rodeo riding.

From October 16 to 19 he competed in the Canadian Cowboy Association rodeo finals in Swift Current. He is currently in first place in the Novice Bull Riding event, which is for competitors under eighteen.

Next up after this event he will be riding in the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboy Association finals in Brandon, October 23 to 25. He will compete

in the sixteen and under steer riding. Cody has qualified for the fourth time for this event and won it in 2018.

He has also qualified for the International Mini Bull Rider Association World Finals in Las Vegas during the first week of December.

While there, he will also compete in the Global Cup. He was invited to be a member of Team Canada and will ride in the Super Senior Steer

The competition includes two U.S. teams and teams from Australia and Europe.

Fringe candidates demonstrate what this election is about

By Murray Mandryk By the time you read this, Saskatchewan could have a prime minister from his province and a new Conservative government.

However, what the polls seem to suggest is this federal election campaign that’s been as close as it has been nasty is more likely to produce a minority government.

There’s been lots of talk this campaign on what divides us. The anger has been palpable and one can’t image how this is a good thing for an ever-divided country that struggles with its differences at the best of times.

It even makes one wonder why the candidates, themselves, are so eager to participate in such a messy affair, especially those candidates who really don’t really have a hope of winning.

Well, it’s actually rather interesting to get the perspective of candidates running for the so-called fringe parties. These are the candidates who don’t enjoy the luxury of campaign teams. They have to pay expenses out of their own pockets because they don’t have donors. And they often must take time off from their work and forego income without any real prospects of a seat in the House of Commons or some cushy government appointment down the road.

They are motivated by their own beliefs and are beliefs that aren’t always easy to sell to other voters.

Yet, there they’ve been out on the road for the last six weeks, or even longer, in most cases, making their pitch to a usually polite but often unreceptive electorate.

It all begs the question: Why do they do it?

“If I wasn’t running, I wouldn’t have anyone to vote for,” said, People’s Party of Canada (PPC) candidate Tracey Sparrowhawk, who is running in Regina-Qu’Appelle where she is taking on the unenviable and seemingly hopeless task of unseating Conservative leader Andrew Scheer.

In fact, not so long ago, Sparrowhawk was a Conservative and strong supporter of Scheer’s 2017 bid to become CPC leader. A strong pro-life supporter like Scheer, she was attracted to what he was saying on the abortion issue and how his leadership would provide opportunities for changes.

However, in last two years, the Regina audiologist and mother of four found Scheer’s leadership to a disappointment on not only the abortion issues but other issues like the right of free speech not inhibited by political correctness or taking on what she calls the climate change hysteria.

So Sparrowhawk is now campaigning as much as her audiologist job permits and knocking on as many doors as she can.

She believes she represents a silence majority and has been surprised at who has been receptive to the PPC message.

For example, while the majority are concerned about unfettered immigration, Sparrowhawk is surprised how will in resonates in the First Nations community in particular.

That said, she has also run headlong into the political concerns.

“Oh gosh. ‘We don’t want to split the vote.’

‘Maxime is a sore loser.’ I’ve heard it all,” she said.

However, Sparrowhawk’s challenge is probably not even as tough as the challenges faced by ReginaQu’Appelle Green candidate Dale Dewar, selling her party’s message in a seat where there’s not much enthusiasm for hearing about climate change and the costs needed to address it.

But the retired rural physician said it’s easier to relate to votes than people realize.

“I try to pick something from my own life and experiences that might match their lives,” Dewar said.

And she says she can agree on most of the points the Agricultural Producers of Saskatchewan (APAS) have identified as their key federal election issues.

Such candidates have taken on the challenge of running because of their strong beliefs.

In doing so, they may be showing why we have these noisy and often nasty campaigns.

Let the counting continue I don’t think a living or family room should be designed with the TV as the focal point. I don’t need all the seats to have a comfortable, unobstructed view of a screen—so I don’t. But there are a few events that have me rotating my favorite chair 45 degrees giving me a headon, unimpeded viewing angle so my neck doesn’t need to swivel.

So it was that on Decision Day 2019 I moved my chair into position, fired up the Keurig and got the coffee brewing as I prepared for the ballots to be counted and the results to be broadcast. My phone was also put to use to get real-time results but I won’t watch too much coverage on it. The screen isn’t big enough for something so significant. At least, significant to me. Earlier, as I pulled open the door to our polling station, I looked at my family and, perhaps a bit too solemnly, said how important this day is. Cue the eye roll. They know it too, and it goes without saying, but for some reason I still felt the need to say it.

So with the TV on one news feed, my phone on another, and the laptop on a third, I was ready for the counting to begin.

I’ve been asked in the past if I would ever run for public office. (I’ll pause a moment and wait for the laughter to cease.) No, no and no. Not because I don’t see the incredible importance of the role, but because I know I am not cut out for it.

In my high school days, I spent some time on my school’s Student Representative Council. In order to run for executive office, we had to collect signatures on nomination papers, campaign (well, create posters and buttons), and make a speech. On election day, ballots were brought to classrooms and everyone voted. Then we waited for the counting to begin.

yond the political realm. Community organizations, service groups, clubs and churches hold elections to determine who will make up a slate of officers, what programs to pursue, or how to spend money. The ones with the most votes win.

But what do we do if our candidate of choice gets defeated, or the program we push for gets cut, or an idea we support is dashed? What if the counting is done and the numbers didn’t go the way we hoped? Or what if they do?

We count a lot of things, but unlike an election it’s not always the case that the one with the biggest number wins. Coins. Sheep. Minutes. Calories. Our age. Blessings. In some cases a higher number is better. In others, lower is preferable.

It all depends on what is being counted. So what exactly was counted Monday night, or in any election setting? Votes? Of course. But something else, too.

Each time we raise a hand or cast a ballot we are indicating our support not just for a candidate, platform or program, but for the system itself. By participating we are demonstrating the belief that it matters. So while the vote count determined which individuals will be MPs, the vote totals say that what we did counts for something in a broader sense. And this is the part that is equally significant.

Public office is not something I would pursue, but that doesn’t mean I don’t value it. I do.

Tremendously. My decision to vote was, and will continue to be, my way of saying this matters. So is my choice to speak up when I disagree, or show support when it warrants, or ask questions of those who have been entrusted to make decisions on my behalf—whether they received my X or not.

I was involved then, and I will continue to be involved. So to all local, provincial and federal officials, we remind you that the counting never stops. We matter—and not just on the days you need us to go to the polls. Let the counting continue. Not the votes…but the voters. That’s my outlook.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • I can’t take all the credit for all the report’s contents, especially since we have three great editors who take turns proof reading it before I send it. Trust me my sentence structure and punctuation are not that great. In addition, it is the team that generates most of the stories and I get to review the files and “Tell the rest of the story” • In addition sometimes we write more warnings and tickets than we take credit for. I say write, but I mean issue. You know? How we use old expressions but they don’t really make sense anymore? Dial a phone, turn on a TV, roll down the car window, penny for your thoughts . . . and we all know there are many more.

• We continue to modernize the way we provide service to our communities and we rarely write tickets any more. We print them off a small printer in our patrol vehicles. We scan your driver’s licence, pull the licence plate information from the SGI database and print out a ticket through a program called PAT Ticketing. This then gets transferred through a program called PAT and then into a program called PROS which is where I pull my stats. If the information has not been transferred yet, I don’t know about it.

Thus, when our traffic members are on a project it could take a few days for this information to be transferred.

• 911 hangups and miss dials are becoming a thing again. Take your time. Ensure you pay attention to what you are doing. Watch out for those fat fingers.

• If you have an alarm please update your “keyholder” If you don’t get the quick service of the Police, don’t get mad at us. Talk to your alarm company.

There is nothing in the contract that says the Police will respond. In many jurisdictions you get charged after a couple of false alarms or service is terminated.

• Now if you want the Police to come help you and it is not an emergency and I know you many think it is an emergency, please don’t call 911. Call 310 RCMP (7267).

• Now if you get mad at someone and strike them and in the process your cell phone falls and hits the ground and is kicked away, I am sorry, but you can’t blame the person being struck for damaging your phone.

Well, I guess you can blame them, however, we sure are not going to charge them.

• Culvert and sign posts were stolen from a yard. We have no suspects or clues that will assist us with this investigation at this time.

• One family member has another family member’s “government” cheque. We are now involved and hopefully we will be able to resolve the matter. If you are afraid that a family member is going through your mail, please get you own mail box.

• A residence no longer exists after a fire engulfed it. Carlyle Fire responded but there was not much they could do.

• We have two fraud investigations initiated over the last week. One relates to possibly identity theft while the other has to do with misuse of a cheque.

• An individual was arrested for breaching their release conditions.

They were found using illegal substances which was and is illegal, however, they were also on conditions not to consume illegal drugs. This individual was released and unfortunately their addictions got the best of them which resulted in a subsequent hospital visit and transfer to another hospital. They were not charged for the subsequent breach of release conditions due to the circumstances.

• Another individual breached their release conditions and also had

a hospital visit, which also resulted in a transfer to another hospital.

This individual was not charged due to the circumstances.

• We deal with numerous mental health and addictions calls each week. This week was a little higher than most weeks, but not out of the ordinary at all. One case, which in its own way is unfortunate, can only be described in its own way as humorous on occasion. You know the old expression “The lights are on, but nobody is home” Well, we have an individual where the expression should be “The lights are out, and somebody is home”. Unfortunately, due to mental health and addictions issues they don’t realize or accept they don’t have power.

• We had a youth not comply with a curfew and the parent brought them in the following day to deal with the breach of release conditions. We need more parents like this.

• As we have seen many times it is unfortunate that an addictions issue, a mental health issue, or combination of both leads to individuals committing Criminal Offences. This is the world we live in and trust me when I say we try and avoid this whenever possible.

• More break and enters or attempted break and enters to businesses have been occurring. Cameras really help, but when we don’t have cameras, we still investigate and involve our Forensic Identification Section out of Yorkton.

• One parent is upset that the other parent is not complying with a court order in relation to custody of a child. I always feel sorry for the child. Sometimes we find that neither parent will take the high road.

Often the child will manipulate the parents because they are so easy to manipulate, being they are so irrational. Either way the child is never the winner. I have seen some parents handle these situations with grace, compassion and

respect. That said, what we normally see is, well embarrassing to say the least.

• Our impaired driving statistics keep increasing, especially impaired by drugs. Between our Detachment and our Detachment traffic Members we had five over the weekend. Four in and around Stoughton and two around the Carlyle area.

• A traffic stop was conducted after an individual failed to stop for a stop sign and did not signal they were turning. When approached by the Police Officer the driver said “Hi”, I mean the driver was obviously high. They were arrested and failed a test conducted by a Drug Recognition Expert. They also received a $360 fine for having cannabis in the vehicle and a warning for the stop sign and failing to signal.

• Members of our Traffic Unit were on a grid road, yes we travel on those as well, being GRC is also known as Grid Road Cop. Okay, back to the story. A traffic stop was conducted and the passenger was identified as having warrants. The driver was suspected as driving under the influence of cannabis and failed the roadside drug test. A 60-day suspension was issued and the driver is now awaiting their blood results which we expect will confirm their abil-

ity to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by drugs.

• An individual was known to have received a cell phone ticket recently. An anonymous complainant called to report they are still driving and using their phone.

Unfortunately we can not issue a ticket with a witness known as Anne NOMOUS. The courts kind of frown on that.

Now if the anonymous caller chose to identify themselves and provide a statement we can issue a ticket.

• Sometimes our ability to solve crime is more of a follow the evidence and is not overly challenging. One such case goes as follows: A piece of “property” that was purchased was to be picked up at a facility that sells such property. Unfortunately, an unauthorized person picked it up, however, it appears the facility that sells such property properly identified the individual that picked up the property. This individual gave it to their significant other, who then gave it to their parent who was totally unaware their “property” had been stolen. The “property” is now with the appropriate owner.

We are awaiting a decision as to whether the complainant wants to have charges laid.

• Members responded to several calls from the driving public. On

one occasion the driver was confirmed to be sober and the complainant just wanted us to provide a warning. Often it is fatigue but apparently after being pulled over by the Police most if not everyone is wide awake and alert. Apparently a Police car with emergency lights can cause heart palpitations, increased pulse rate and shortness of breath. Who knew.

• The animals are rebelling. Normally we vehicles collide with deer, moose and sometimes elk. Lately it looks as though all the animals are involved and we have had moose, deer, racoon and beaver.

• Members issued approximately 45 warnings and 35 tickets over the last week.

Conservative Robert Kitchen earns a lopsided victory in Souris-Moose Mountain - Coal, oil and agriculture on Kitchen’s agenda

By Ana Bykhovskaia of the Estevan Mercury Robert Kitchen of the Conservative Party will represent the Souris-Moose Mountain constituency for a second term.

With 190 of 192 polls reporting, Kitchen had 33,932 of the 40,180 votes cast, or 84.4 per cent.

There are 51,957 eligible voters in Souris-Moose Mountain, meaning Kitchen received over 65 per cent of support from eligible voters in the riding.

Kitchen’s office was packed Monday night, as local conservative supporters, his team and family came to be with their candidate when poll results were being announced. Many were wearing traditional blue along with conservative pins.

“I feel great. We worked hard. It wasn’t just me, it was my team that made this happen. None of this gets done unless you become a team,” said Kitchen in an interview with the Mercury when it became clear that he would be the winner.

In his speech, he first of all thanked his supporters and his wife. He also extended his gratitude to his campaign manager, people who ran the office and all the volunteers.

“It’s just a tremendous thing, so I can’t thank them enough. It makes you smile a lot more,” said Kitchen, also thanking other members of his family, some of whom helped with the campaign, and his opponents.

“Credit to them for any opponents that put their name on the line and stand up for an opinion they believe in. I can’t say enough to them for taking that opportunity. Because Canada, the great country that we have, it gives us that opportunity for all of us to speak our opinions and provide what we believe is the right thing for our constituency.”

Kitchen said that during his campaign he put over 11,000 kilometres on his truck and that’s not it, as he and the volunteers now need to go back and pick up all the signs.

Kitchen had the largest margin of victory in Saskatchewan in this election and the strongest support in Souris-Moose Mountain since its inception in 1988. He had a lead of at least 30,836 votes, with the runner-up NDP candidate Ashlee Hicks being at

“That’s fantastic, and that’s what I worked hard to do. I want to show everybody, and I want to show my leader, this is the strongest support. And it is here, and it’s done, because of the good things we do. Our agriculture, our oil and gas … our coal and our mining. These people are caring. And it’s not just here in Estevan. It’s in Coronach. It’s throughout this whole riding,” said Kitchen.

“Bottom line is that when I’m sitting in that seat in Ottawa and I’m speaking in Ottawa, I want to make sure that I’m speaking from what the majority of my constituency wanted.”

He pointed out that these supporters and the industries they are involved with will be his top priority in Ottawa.

“I believe that when I sit in Ottawa, and I’ve said this many, many times, and I will continue to say that, that seat in Ottawa doesn’t belong to me.

It belongs to you, each and every one of you in this riding,” said Kitchen.

“My job is to be that mouthpiece sitting in that seat … People don’t give us credit for the green stewardship that our farmers do from the greenhouse gas emission point. They don’t give us credit for the great work that our CCS (carbon capture and storage facility) does. With the fly ash that we produce with both of our power plants, we are reducing the emissions that come out of the cement companies. They are one of the biggest emitters of green gas emissions and fly ash helps reduce them. So we need that credit. People need to talk about that more.”

Until the final federal results were in, Kitchen refrained from any comments on the results. However, there were some strong reactions in the office during the night of the election. The unexpected defeat of high-profile Liberal MP Ralph Goodale and subsequent conservative Michael Kram’s victory in the Regina-Wascana riding was greeted with a big

Even though the general atmosphere in the office was very positive as people were celebrating the fact that their preferred candidate and party will represent their interests in the parliament, the general preliminary election results were somewhat frustrating for many of those present.

The future will show how the newly elected government with the Liberal minority and a comfortable lead, and Justin Trudeau remaining in the prime minister’s seat, will play out and where it will get Canada over the course of this term.

The history of Carlyle Full Gospel Church Submitted In 1914 Mr. Ed Hume, who taught Sunday School in the Presbyterian Church in the Dalesboro district, heard of revival meetings being held at Trossachs, Saskatchewan. Mr. Hume decided to attend these meetings and invited his Sunday School class to accompany him there. Miss Eva Eaton (Sargent) was one of the young people who travelled by train to Weyburn, where they were met by some of the camp members who drove them out to the camp site.

The camp meetings were held in a large tent and those attending brought their own tents in which to stay. This visit to Trossachs Gospel Camp instigated the meetings that were held later in the Carlyle Rural area. These meetings, held in the early 1920’s were conducted by Rev. and Mrs. M.V. Brown with the assistance of Mr. and Mrs. Hart, Mr. J. Erickson and Mr and Mrs. D. Aikenhead, all lay minis-

ters of the Trossachs Gospel Camp Meeting Association. During the summer months the meetings were held in a large tent which was first pitched about six miles north of Carlyle in a well shaded poplar bluff, to which some 100 people attended, coming from about a 20 mile radius. When cold weather came the meetings were held in a restored log house about 3 miles east of town.

As time went by the need for a permanent church building became apparent. Rev. M.V. Brown, pastor of the church obtained lumber prices from various BC lumber companies and a car load of lumber was ordered. This load of lumber arrived in the fall of 1928, at a cost of $600.00. This load consisted of the needed lumber to construct the church building.

Mr. Howard Eaton brought his team from town, and he and Rev. Brown hauled the lumber to the church site. From Page 6 - Carlyle Full Gospel Church She had read in the Reader’s Digest that Bing Crosby was donating his royalties made from his recording of, Silent Night, to charity, so Mrs. Eaton wrote to Bing Crosby, telling him of the project and of the need of funds to accomplish this. To this request Bing Crosby sent a donation of $25.00.

The basement was finished in the fall of 1944 and in the early spring of 1945 while Rev. Fred Assman was pastor of the church. The twostory house was moved to its present site (now the site of the new sanctuary). The work was once again done with Volunteer Labor along with the use of two tractors driven by two sons of Mr. Archie Young.

In the early years the church was lit with gas lights but they changed to electric lights in 1945 when the manse was also wired. This volunteer work was done by Mr. E.E. Graham and Mr. G. Sargent.

In 1957 while Rev. P.S. Smith was pastoring the church, the growing Sunday School made it necessary for added classroom space.

As a result the congregation decided that a full

size basement was needed. This new basement was built by Mr. Nels Steffenson and his crew.

Mr. Albert Wharren and his crew and equipment were volunteered and the church was moved onto the basement. The new entrance was added to the front of the church as well as the classrooms in the basement.

On September 3, 1979 the Carlyle Full Gospel Church celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a Church Homecoming. This happy and memorial day saw many former members and pastors returning to Carlyle and taking part in the special services at the church.

In the fall of 1983, renovations were done to the front of the church, with the entrance being moved to ground level and a new brickfront added to the exterior.

In September, 1984, the congregation felt they were outgrowing the old church building so a committee of the church board was set up to gather proposals and blueprints for a new church building.

In August 1985, the church congregation voted unanimously

to enter into a building program to construct a new 60x60 church building to be attached to the existing building. September 1985, the church manse was donated to New Hope Christian Centre at Kisbey, the following month the basement was dug and construction began.

From October of 1985 to November of 1986, the construction continued with a lot of dedication and volunteer work from the men of the congregation. The contract work was done to complete the finishing work. In November 1986 the new sanctuary was ready for use, and everything was going as planned. In February 1987, the fellowship hall and kitchen facilities were completed and put to use. The new church facilities were dedicated during special services with the Moderator of ACOP, Wes Schindle.

This dedication took place in September 1987.

With these new facilities the church was able to host District Conference, Crusades, Women’s Seminars, church weddings funerals, Annual Senior Suppers, successful Youth Rallies, children’s VBS

and Kids Club. In 1988, Pastor and Sister Young desired to share their years of Ministry in Mexico by taking a group of 22 church members on a mission trip to Pueblo, Mexico.

The church has been involved in various outreaches over the years and supported overseas missions. CFG has had a heart for the youth of our community and over the years has run youth group weekly as well as organized special events like the Hocus Pick Concert in the late 90’s.

They have also brought

in Street Invaders and Life Force teams. In 2006 the church hosted the Heaven’s Gates and Hell’s Flames production which was a huge success. In 2014 the church put on an Easter Productions, Glorious Day, which was also a great success. The church has also been very involved in Tros-

sachs Camp since its beginning.

As a church we celebrate the past and all that God has done, and we are looking forward now to the new things the future holds. We are thankful to be part of the Community of Carlyle and invite the community to come celebrate with us October 25-27th.

The restaurant is fully set-up for turnkey operation, with a seating capacity of 70 patrons.

There is a well-established client base of locals.

Lease would include the restaurant facilities, attached storage room, furniture, fixtures and equipment.

The successful applicant is expected to open up the Skating Rink side for public skating, and is expected to clean the Skating Rink side and dressing rooms on an ongoing basis.

Oh boy, I goofed and will take responsibility for no news last week as I forgot the early deadline on Oct. 10, so therefore missed an issue with no news – sorry – oh well guess it only will mean more news (ha ha) for this Oct. 25 issue.

Hope you all had great Thanksgiving holiday weekend - a belated Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

If you happen to be feeling that the cold weather is getting mighty chilly lately and you can’t find your jacket maybe it’s because you have may misplaced and left it at the Alida Hall awhile back. It has been noticed that three jackets have been hanging on the rack for quite some time now – maybe one could be yours. (1) A pink quilted jacket – size 10-12. (2) A Black Helly Hansen jacket with Moose Mountain Mud stitched along bottom at the back – size Large.

(3) A black leather Jacket – size Medium. If one of these is your jacket please contact Linda at the Post Office to make arrangements to get it picked up. If these jackets are not claimed they will be taken to a second-hand store and/or given to the needy John Cowan from Blairmore, AB arrived at the Cowan farm Oct. 8 to visit with the Cowan family and to assist with this year’s harvest – a very slow go. While here he also visited with Joyce and Jackie George at Redvers.

Gail Mclachlin spent a few days over Thanksgiving with her family in Calgary – son Mitch Cowan and Andrea Gohm and daughter Grace, Luke McKenna and grandchildren Thea and Finn.

Joe Harvey held Thanksgiving dinner on Oct. 1, attending were his sons, Mike and Andrew, also his brother Archie and nephew Brody.

Thanksgiving guests with Leonard and Lil Patton on Oct. 13 were their son Trevor and Sheri, grandchildren Cordelia and Keagan and Dennis and Gail Nasea.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the Potapinski and Sauder families on the sudden death of Collin Sauder of Hodgeville, SK on Oct. 14 at the age of 64 years.

Collin is survived by his wife Michelle (Mickie Potapinski) and family Whitney, Gavin and Hillary as well as many extended family members.

Edel Cowan spent October 9 to 10 in Regina visiting with her son Jeff and Thursday morning had a medical eye appointment, returning home later on that day.

The ghosts, goblins and ppooks have now arrived at the Alida Haunted House. Friday, Oct. 18 was the first day of the 19th Haunted House that the doors were open with a good crowd of approximately 63 guests steadily touring through the Halls of Horror. Most of these guests also took the time to explore and challenge the Escape Rooms, which were also opened – a first to be held here. Then on

Saturday, October 19 doors opened again at 7:00 pm and once again the spooks were all anxious to meet and scare the visitors who would brave their tour through the halls. It was a very slow evening with a total of 48 visiting and making their way through the Haunted House. Now if you were unfortunate not to have made it down to the Alida rink – don’t dismay – there is still time to make it this weekend. The Haunted House and Escape Rooms are both opened on Friday evening and a tour of the Halls will also be open on Saturday and Sunday. The Family Fun Fair will also be held on Sunday and the children really seem to enjoy this event. Hope we see you there.

Thankskgiving! We give thanks for the warmth, comfort, good food and tender loving care we receive here. Guests at our table were Francis and Beverly Sheard and Donald Baker. Joe and Shirley Blaise and Sharon Buetler, and Philip Mark were later guests. The women of the Library Board came with table games on Saturday. Charlotte brought a movie Friday night.

Circle of Friends talked of crops. Janet’s favorite was raspberries; 50 quarts before she called in friends to help pick. Joyce hated picking beans.

Marie had no freezer, so she canned all fruit and vegetables. Eunice grew a big garden. She canned on a coal oil stove. Her boiler held 15 quarts at a time.

We all remember the flies; fly coils and plates of fly poison pads. Ralph Mill said 1935 was wet, and the wheat crop rusted so that the whole crop was just brown. Ralph Burke was born in the worst years. He drove a tractor pulling a combine. Joan Colborn remembered a bad storm in the 1970s which broke all the windows and hailed the crop.

To Fred, harvest was so exciting that he ran all the way home from school. He grew up to be the one

who set the big belt on the threshing machine just right from the tractor. Marianne looked forward to all the food and excitement. Clifford said that in 1961 there was only 3” of rain all year, and very little crop; but the next year was good. Ruth Dennis’ highlight was trucking for two combines.

Members of the German Mennonite Choir brought us worship last week. Jacob and Anna Tiessen sang a German hymn for Leora. Kornelia Ens and her brother Erwin Neufeld played violin duet. Willi and Tina Neufeld shard piano with little Arthur Ens. Dieter Penner spoke of God’s grace and mercy.

On Thanksgiving Sunday the Sinclair Choir sang with us. They visited Redvers Care Home as well, and will be back in December.

Almost next door to us, the whole of southern Manitoba has been hit with a blizzard and is without power in hospitals and nursing Homes, and an entire First Nations Reserve. Manitoba Power will need two weeks to repair the damage. How fortunate we are.

Provincial Cross Country Congratulations to the Senior Cross Country Team. They competed in the Provincial Meet in Prince Albert on the Thanksgiving Weekend. In races with between 100 and 140 competitors, all the athletes did very well. In Midget Boys’ Mitch Himmelspach finished 7th! In Junior Boys’ Nathan Simons finished 25th and Jonah Dyck finished 27th!

In Senior Boys’ John Shirley finished 76th! Finally, as a 3A school team, GF Kells was 4th in the whole province! Way to go guys!

Runnerup candidates respond to election night results

By David Willberg and Greg Nikkel Candidates who were defeated by the Conservatives’ Robert Kitchen in Souris-Moose Mountain in Monday’s federal election had plenty to say about the results, both locally and nationally.

NDP candidate Ashlee Hicks was happy with her outcome in the election in second place, albeit a distant second in a six-horse race behind Kitchen.

“It was a good run,” she said. “I’m happy with the way the forums went, and in a riding where it’s overwhelmingly Conservative support.”

With 190 of 192 polling stations reporting, she garnered 3,096 votes or 7.7 per cent of the ballots cast.

“The most important thing I could do is to take advantage of the opportunity to have a conversation with the sitting MP, and keep an open dialogue,” said Hicks. “I’m pretty happy with finishing in second place. It’s a really tough riding in trying to get ahead.”

While living in Saskatoon, she was able to come down to the riding to do some campaigning, including attending the candidates’ forums in Moosomin, Weyburn and Estevan, and she was able to put her message across to those audiences at least.

While acknowledging not many people agreed with her positions, “I feel it’s a vital part of the conversation.”

Nationally, with the NDP in fourth, behind the Bloc Quebecois, Hicks said, “I feel we’re in a very interesting position, and I feel our concerns and voice of opposition is really going to create a little future with a minority government.”

Asked if she thinks there might be a possible coalition with the minority Liberal government, she said, “I’m not sure if it’s going to happen. It could put us in a better position in getting our policies into the grand scheme of things.”

Hicks said it was “absolutely” worth it to put her name in and run as a candidate, and noted she found it invaluable to have conversations with the incumbent MP, as she found he genuinely cares for this riding, and the people of the riding have full confidence in him as their MP. As to whether she might run again as a candidate, Hicks said, “Perhaps. I would never say no. I feel at the end of the day the best I can do is to put

my party’s message forward and have some good conversations.”

Phil Zajac, who was the candidate for the People’s Party of Canada, finished fourth with 675 votes, or 1.7 per cent. He thought he would do better; in fact, he thought he would win the riding.

Zajac said most people he talked to in the constituency are concerned about the future of coal mining.

“I spent a lot of time in Coronach last week, and the thing that struck me was that when you’re in Ottawa or Toronto or a big city, or even Regina or Saskatoon, it would be no big deal to close a power plant or to close a mine,” said Zajac at his campaign office in Estevan.

But in a smaller community, it’s a much larger impact. And when he met people and saw their faces, he could see they were losing hope.

“Somebody needs to be the voice of those people,” said Zajac.

He was disappointed to see that party leader Maxime Bernier, who launched the People’s Party last year, lost his seat in Beauce, Quebec. Bernier finished more than 6,000 seats behind Ricard Lehoux of the Conservatives.

“It’s going to be a little tougher road, and everybody knows that,” said Zajac.

The party was also shut out from Parliament during the election.

As for the Liberals getting re-elected, he said he was surprised with the support they received amid the bad publicity the Liberals received regarding the SNC-Lavalin scandal and other issues.

“You would think that people would not be as interested in voting for the Liberal Party, but it just seemed like nobody really cared,” said Zajac.

Travis Patron of the Canadian Nationalist Party, placed last in the voting with 166 votes or 0.4 per cent of the support.

Patron said he came into the election with the feeling he had nothing to lose and everything to gain as a brand new party on the federal scene.

“I put a new idealism forward of Canadian nationalism. We haven’t had that, but it’s also clear we have a lot of work to do,” said Patron.

found that there are a lot of people not happy with the Conservatives, so there is a chance to let people know about where the Nationalist Party stands.

Patron said it was definitely worth putting his name forward, and that of the Canadian Nationalist Party, and the lessons learned from the campaign will help him formulate his strategy going forward to build the party up for the next election.

For one thing, he wants to have candidates in more ridings by the next election.

Even though he was disappointed with the results, he said he would rather be politically active than to just vote once every four years, and feels he can make a difference in people’s lives this way.

by Barry and Ellen Gall. Barry and Ellen have moved to Weyburn and just recently Ellen’s mother, Florence Hutchison has also moved to Weyburn. She is a resident of Bison Manor. We wish them all well in their new environments.

Visiting with Jean Bogner for the Thanksgiving weekend through to Wednesday of the following week were her daughter, Bonnie Bogner of Regina and Christina Phipps and Youssauf Kante from Vancouver Island.

Laurel Charles, her daughters Kori Ciuca of Regina and Niki Leggett of Calgary and her daughter-in-law Luann Charles enjoyed a holiday to Las Vegas recently.

Sherry Wight and her mother Joyce McIndoe of Maryfield travelled to Moose Jaw for Thanksgiving. Brittany Wight and her family and Rianne Watson and family joined several other family members at Sherry’s sister’s, Pam Perbushewski home.

Ken and Monique Myers enjoyed a trip by rail to Gatineau, Quebec.

Monique’s father, Leo Fournier and her mother Sylvia Fournier were interred in the Beachwood Veterans Cemetery on Oct. 21. Leo just recently

I am in the midst of trying to read the six books that were shortlisted for the Giller Prize Award. When the long list came out in August I ordered them all, as you don’t which will shortlisted. I was reasonably lucky as, to date I have read four of the six books. The awards are on Nov. 18 and I would like to have read them all by that time. Time will tell.

Ann N. Fleck 1916 - 2019

Surrounded by the love of her family, Ann passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Lampman Health Centre, Lampman, SK at the age of 103 years.

Ann was predeceased by her husband Herman; son Lorne; daughter Shirley Carson; sons-in-law Ernie Taillon and Don Johner; grandson Joey Taillon; siblings, Mary Skikevitch, Eva Dyok, Nick, Joe, George, Tony and Charlie, as well as numerous other family members including Herman’s family.

Ann’s memory will forever be cherished by her family; son-in-law Ron Carson and his children, Tracey (Kent Geisel), Travis, Troye (Joanna), Trent (Louise) and Tricia (Roy Stinson); daughter Elaine (Ed) Mayer and their children, Carla, Renell (Tara), Lorellee (Keith Kilpatrick) and Lonny (Jen); son Larry (Aldyth) and their children Brent, Chad, Karyse (Don Nobert) and Jeremy (Kathy); daughter Linda and her children Johnny and Lara; daughter Janet (Dennis) Veroba and their children Sheldon (Holly), Raymond (Amy) and Matthew (Kim); son Allan (Peggy) and their children, Tyler (River), Christopher (Billi) and Amy (Clayton Geiger); daughter Marlene (Don) Raynard and their children, Devin (Wendy), Jan (Mark Hase), Kelly (Shawn Klassen), Michael, Norbert (Kaitlyn), Nyla (Ryan Saxon) and R.J. Prayers for Ann were held on Friday, October 11, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. and the Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Both services were held at Our Lady of Seven Sorrows R.C. Church, Lampman, SK with Rev. Nestor Gregoire OMI presiding. Interment followed the service at the parish cemetery. The luncheon was held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Lampman, SK immediately following the interment.

Pride Flag once again raised in Stoughton

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury It was a proud moment for many in the community of Stoughton last June, when the rainbow Pride Flag was raised high above the Stoughton Central High School.

But that ended the day after the ceremony, when somebody took the flag down from the flag pole and burned it. The flag was supposed to flap proudly for one more day before being brought down.

Earlier this month, the recognition of diversity and tolerance at the school resumed, when the flag was once again raised for one day on Oct. 10.

Jessica Baumgartner, a member of the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) and a Grade 10 student at the school, said the flag raising helped LGBTQ students and community members feel safe to be who they are.

About half a dozen students are involved with Stoughton’s GSA. Once it was burned, members of the school’s GSA knew they wanted to have a flag up for one more day.

“We wanted to show support for the LGBTQ community, and to show that no matter who tries to stop this, we’re going to keep progressing and mov-

ing forward,” said Baumgartner.

A ceremony was held at the school on Oct. 10.

Speakers included Laura Budd and Cole Ramsey from Moose Jaw Pride, along with Terry Vanmackelberg from Regina, who is the host of the Prairie Pride talk show that deals with LGBTQ issues.

“The speakers were great and the audience was very attentive,” Baumgartner said.

The crowd was much larger than what they expected, and Baumgartner said they had students from the GSAs in Lampman, Arcola and Fillmore in attendance.

Baumgartner hopes the school can continue to host Pride Week activities in the future.

And while the burning of the flag was unfortunate, she believes it created awareness about the need to continue to support LGBTQ students.

“Support is here, and anyone who needs it is welcome,” she said.

An RCMP investigation was launched into the burning of the flag, but no charges were laid in connection with the incident.

Kisbey restoration project wins Heritage Award Submitted A local restoration project has been recognized with a Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Physical Heritage Conservation Award.

The Smithfield Heritage Restoration Project received the award for its work to restore the Smithfield stone farmhouse located in the Percy district north of Kisbey.

Named by local pioneer James Mitchell Smith the house was completed in 1903 and abandoned in 1988.

Smith’s great grandson, Richard Krehbiel of Kisbey began salvage and restoration work in 2005 and welcomed the award as an encouragement for efforts to preserve Saskatchewan’s built heritage.

Frighty nights in Wawota

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Taking place in Wawota is this year’s version of Wawota’s Haunted Hotel. This event takes place at the Wawota Hotel and this is the fourth year it has been held. The Haunted Hotel committee is chaired by President Kayla Porter. The group has an executive of five members and the group consists of around 30 members.

The idea for this spooky event grew out of a family gathering for Halloween in one of the member’s garages. They joined up with some friends that had been raising money for “Movember” and the Haunted Hotel was indoctrinated!

Tickets are available at the hotel on the main floor in the tavern. This year the proceeds are going to the Moose Mountain Lions Club Greenspace in the Village of Kenosee Lake and the Wawota Daycare. Around 700 people were frightened by this event last year and this year’s attendance should scare even more brave souls.

Be warned, that one should be very careful approaching the hotel, as danger is lurking everywhere.

The theme for this year’s event is “Medieval Dungeon”. The upper floor’s decorum is diabolically suited to frighten anyone who dares to enter. Groups limited to five are paraded upstairs where the madness begins. Even the regular tenants of ghosts and spirits have vacated the hotel for now and were unable to be found for comment.

There are 12 rooms all with various themes and

you do not want to be caught locked in. They include “live rats” [eek!], “burn you at the stake”, the “rack torture room”, all of which are accessible from a long heinous hallway with spiked heads that were leftovers from the “guillotine room” one would presume.

Among the decrepit that have taken up residence are: ladies in waiting, a king and queen, knights, witches, pheasants and an executioner . The sinister cast of characters had their makeup done by Lana Young, Lynette Porter, Michelle Klien and Courtney Luscombe.

The event was held on October 18 and 19, but if you missed these dates, they will be open on Nov. 2.

Doors open 7 p.m. Children under 15 were able to go through on the afternoon of Oct. 20.

The event is described as an “interactive experience” and is a “can’t miss” for those brave enough to attend.
