Arcola Health Centre celebrates 90th birthday Submitted Residents of Arcola and the surrounding communities came together on October 4, 2018 for an evening to remember, commemorating the Arcola Health Centre’s 90th birthday.

Approximately 140 people gathered at the Arcola Curling Club for beef on a bun. Guests were treated to significant historical displays including two bricks from the 1928 building, Doctor D.C. MacRae’s original medical bag as well as the “OLD ELEVATOR ROPE”.

Registered Nurse Tannis Wilson (daughter of Dr. Don and Lo-

rine MacRae) had the honor of emceeing the program and shared personal anecdotes to add a special touch of humor to the evening.

Mayor Keith Erick delivered a heartfelt message on behalf of the surrounding town councils and municipalities, thanking previous and current staff for their dedication and hard work to provide safe, quality care to patients for the past 90 years.

Poetry and music were shared with those in attendance, with Auldene Craig and Laurie Fornwald’s rendition of “Something to Sing About” proving to be a

90th Birthday cake display.

crowd pleaser, evident by the standing ovation at the end of their performance.

Guests were treated to an unexpected highlight, when long time local psychiatrist and son of the late Dr D. C. MacRae (original founder), Dr. Don MacRae took the mic and shared his personal, family connections and some of his favorite memories.

Birthday cupcakes, created for the event were shared. Draws for generous door prizes, donated by area residents and businesses, wrapped up a successful evening.

Creative Tables was again a sold out event Submitted by Darlene Olsen Another super successful Creative Tables took place at the Arcola Prairie Place Hall!

Once again this event was sold out! The hostesses always are the key to the success as they create the most amazing tables – different ideas and make this very special for the guests at their table!

The meal was prepared by Linda Chapman and Eileen Corrigan and there were rave reviews on what was served! Thanks to you and your helpers!

This year we enjoyed entertainment from Justin Labrash of Lumsden, Sask! Justin is the recipient of the Sask. Country Music Association’s 2018 Emerging Artist of the Year – so we were honored to have him perform four or five songs for us!

Natalie Bloomfield of Carlyle was the special guest speaker and what an inspiration she is to everyone! Her strength and determination has helped her during the past few years as she

has battled with cancer!

Gratitude for what and who she has in her life was her message - and Natalie had the entire room pulling for her and her family.

Christine Legg from Dreams of Regina also spoke with regard to The Shoebox Project and was overwhelmed from the support she received – businesses offering drop off spots – restaurant for a “shoebox” event – donations in excess of $700 – free Christmas wrapping paper from the Hallmark owner in Regina!

Kim Craig of Mississauga, Ontario spoke with regards to The Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation which sends the fund from this event to the Look Good Feel Better Program! Kim relayed the importance of helping women across Canada each month who are going through the personal effects of chemo and radiation and how this program makes the women feel like themselves again.

It is a time when they can smile – laugh and not be thinking about their next hospital appointment!

The Arcola Day Care will be receiving a percentage of the funds raised from this event!

Their spokesperson explained where the funds are spent – and the importance of a day care where families – single parents can entrust their children with!

Darlene wants to express a huge THANK YOU to all the volunteers for their help! All the businesses and others who donate beautiful items to the silent auction & raffles!

The hostesses – you ladies are incredible and I THANK YOU! And of course a huge thanks to each and every person in attendance – your support is why we do this!

RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons Well I don’t know about you but I have had enough turkey and pumpkin pie.......well, for at least a week.....OK, I could have more pie.

Our Traffic Unit in conjunction with our Detachment Members were out enforcing the Traffic Safety Act. Way too many offenders. If you don’t like paying fines all you have to do is avoid breaking the laws.

Pretty simple.

We had a 911 hangup

in the Carlyle area where it was determined children were playing with the phone.

Another individual called 911 to report their child was about to run away. Unfortunately this is not a policing issue, nor is it a reason to call 911.

We have been dealing with Phantom calls from a cell phone. We have never been able to locate the cell phone and don’t know who has it.

As much as those that are calling think it is funny it is a waste of resources and time.

We assisted Conservation with a possible poaching incident, however, determined

that the geese appeared to be legally harvested, however, dumped on someone’s property. Unfortunately this was later repeated and although patrols were made the suspected white truck was not located.

We have recently dealt with a couple of incidents where child custody issues and the RCMP intertwine. It is unfortunate that pride often gets in the way of doing the right thing.

Remember to think of the children first and foremost. Unfortunately we find many think of themselves before they think of the children and what is best for the children.

Carlyle RCMP – Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) test leads to arrest, charges At approximately 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10th, Carlyle RCMP responded to a complaint of a possible drug-impaired driver.

The vehicle was stopped in the Arcola, Saskatchewan area and the adult male driver and lone occupant was tested by a qualified Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) RCMP member.

The test supported an impaired driving charge and a subsequent search of the ve-

hicle obtained an illegally altered firearm believed to have been stolen.

41-year-old Lindsay Cote of White Bear First Nation is charged with a number of offences, including: • Impaired Driving Section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code • Drive while Prohibited - Section 259(4)of the Criminal Code • Unsafe Storage of a Firearm - Section 86(1) of the Criminal Code

• Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle - 91(1) of the Criminal Code • Defacing a Serial # on a firearm - 108(1)(b) of the Criminal Code • Possessing a firearm while Prohibited from doing so - 117.01(1) of the Criminal Code • Breach of Probation (X2) - 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code Cote will appeared in court in Estevan Provincial Court on Monday, October 15, 2018.

We assisted Carlyle Fire Department at a structure fire. Unfortunately someone was trying to use a stove to heat their residence which caused the fire. The only occupant was able to escape without injury.

Members investigated a Break and Enter to a Cabin where liquor was stolen. People often leave notes on their doors advising there is no liquor left in the Cabin. Not that it always works, but sometimes people believe what they read.

Our Detachment received a call of a possible impaired driver in Arcola and immediate patrols were made. The drive was quickly located and arrested near Arcola. He was subsequently charged for driving while impaired by a drug, driving while disqualified, fail to comply with release conditions as well as several firearms offences. A Drug Recognition Expert from Weyburn RCMP Traffic Services assisted with the testing of this individual who was subsequently remanded to appear in Court.

Members responded to several other complaints of erratic drivers over the last week, however, unfortunately we were unable to locate any of the vehicles associated to the complaints.

Members patrolled the Manor area looking for a couple of vehicles driving erratically, however, did not locate the vehicles.

We have had a rash of vehicles breaking down on our rural roads over the last week. If they are a traffic hazard or do not have insurance we often tow them. We do this for the safety of the public and not for the inconvenience of the owner.

We had a vehicle reported stolen which Members determined to be borrowed by a family member that wanted it back. No charges being the owner just wanted it back.

We received a report of youth possibly smoking marihuana in an abandoned building in Manor. This information was shared with Social Services. Although it will soon be legal to possess for adults it will still be illegal for minors.

Although we had a couple of collisions reported to us this past week we were fortunate to not have any injury collisions. Remember, the weather can change quickly, get the snow tires on and drive defensively.

Two individuals found themselves owing $580.00 for no insurance. If you can’t remember if you have insurance call your insurance company.

100th Anniversary of the end of World War 1 Submitted by Doug Waldner November 11, 2018 is the 100th Anniversary of the armistice that ended World War 1. This was the most bloody and widespread conflict the world had ever seen, and it’s armistice was received with thanks and prayers around the world. Canada contributed to the efforts of that war in many ways, not the least of which was supplying young men and women to the military.

On this upcoming 100th Anniversary of the end to the most brutal war the world had ever seen, the Carlyle Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion would like to remind the town of Carlyle of the citizens of Carlyle who particpated in that struggle. Below you will find the names of the local citizens who were named in “Prairie Trails to Blacktop” (Carlyle History Book, published in 1982) as:

Saskatchewan RCMP statement: RCMP prepared for the legalization of cannabis On October 17, 2018, cannabis became legal in Canada. In response, the Saskatchewan RCMP has increased capacity in numerous areas, such as prevention and engagement, intelligence, and training to ensure officers are prepared. Impaired driving continues to be a pressing concern in Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan RCMP has been working diligently with municipal, provincial, and federal partners to ensure officers are well-equipped to detect drug-impaired driving.

This year, Saskatchewan RCMP has trained over

100 officers in the administration of the Standardized Field Sobriety tests (SFSTs) and are on track to have over 100 Drug Recognition Evaluators (DREs) by the end of 2019. Officers are also being trained on the Oral Fluid Device (OFD) as part of the limited, strategic roll-out of these devices which are used for roadside drug impairment testing. This training builds on the foundation officers already have to test for impaired driving.

I saw one of my high school teachers in Regina a while back who told me that he reads my columns with great interest. He is still not sure how I ever became a law enforcement officer with vast responsibilities from what he remembered about me in school, but I told him that we all grow up someday…and he seemed to accept it. Thanks for the kind words Mr. K. With hunting season underway, I have been getting lots of questions about various topics to discuss.

Some may be a bit of a reminder, but some new topics are generating some interest.

One of the first comments I received this year was from a gentleman who had just purchased his hunting licence. With the purchase of his licence, we provided him with a copy of the Hunters’ and Trappers’ Guide. He commented that it was smaller than past years and he is correct, as some of the content has been moved to saskatchewan.ca/hunting.

Online users can simply print specific sections of the guide (or the entire guide) at home, download it to their mobile device, or link to it through some mobile hunting applications.

Over the last few weeks, I have heard some discussion on various social media venues

about land access. The one thing that keeps coming up is when a wounded big game animal runs from land that you have access to onto land that you do not have permission to be on because it is posted.

What you should do in a situation like that is make contact with the owner of the posted land. Explain the situation and ask for permission to enter onto the land to retrieve your harvest.

If the landowner says no, which that person is entitled to do, contact your local conservation officer, who will retrieve the animal for you. Don’t enter onto the land without permission or you could face possible charges.

Here are a few more questions from hunters and landowners.

Q: Can ravens be shot if they become a nuisance?

A few years back, changes were made to The Wildlife Regulations, which allowed landowners and trappers to legally shoot ravens found damaging property.

Q: Can I use an ATV to hunt upland birds?

All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), side by sides or snowmobiles may not be used to hunt wildlife in all southern zones in Saskatchewan during an open big game season.

They can be used if there are no big game seasons open.

Q: Are there parcels of land out there that a hunter can hunt on that is not privately owned?

Yes, there are Fish and Wildlife Development Fund Lands, as well as

Ducks Unlimited Lands and even some pastures that are open to the public.

Wildlife lands are clearly marked and you may only hunt on foot. A vehicle can be used to retrieve legally harvested animals by the most direct route, but make sure your firearm is encased.

Ducks Unlimited Land is also a good option and these parcels are clearly marked as hunt on foot only.

The last parcels of land are community pastures. These are normally closed to hunters until November 1, so that they have time to remove the cattle. It is always best to talk with the pasture manager regarding access rules.

Q: Can I legally shoot a moose from a boat?

The short answer to this is YES. A boat is not considered a motor vehicle under The Wildlife Act, so one can legally carry a loaded firearm in a boat and shoot from it. Make sure that if you harvest your animal in the water that you have the means to retrieve it. Also, ensure that you are not harassing or chasing that animal with a boat.

Q: Do you have any tips on tagging and or field dressing your big game?

Remember that when you are out hunting big

game, you should take special care in preparing your harvest prior to taking it to a meat cutter. Make sure that your licence is available and the harvest is tagged properly, as the meat cutter has records that they must fill out.

If you de-boned your meat, make sure that it remains cool. The main reason for meat spoilage is body heat. Ensure you have good air circulation around the carcass and skin it, if possible, to aid in the cooling.

Take note in what you put your de-boned meat into. Normal garbage bags may not be the answer, as many of them are made with a disinfectant that kills bacteria and odour.

They are probably not something that you want your de-boned meat sitting in.

No government should ever be condemned for focusing on jobs

By Murray Mandryk Jobs represent the well being of their constituents, which should be the foremost concern of an local elected official.

But jobs are also something that falls within the jurisdiction of local politicians and sticking to what is in your purview is an important and often overlooked aspect of governance.

If you think about it, this is why global warming initiatives are failing.

By definition, global warming is a “global issue”, not an issue for local or provincial or even federal politicians to handle.

Maybe this is precisely why we are struggling mightily to get a handle on the matter.

So it isn’t surprising that the Saskatchewan Party government is prioritizing good-paying jobs in its fight against the federal carbon tax.

Of course, there is also the Sask. Party argument that the federal government’s carbon tax isn’t actually an effective way of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, anyway.

We remain a resource-based economy where the burning of fossil fuel, be it for farming, mining, manufacturing or the oil sector, is a necessity.

Pricing carbon might not change our way of life, but it will surely make it more expensive, something that the federal government doesn’t seem to get.

Irritating to many in this sparsely populated, rural, agrarian part of the country, is the fact it’s not simply a case of using more public transportation to reduce our fossil fuel consumption. We still need fuel for the very machinery that drives our economy.

And a big part of that economy is fossil fuel itself.

Finally, our source of electricity is mostly fuelled by coal.

Sure, there have been efforts to move away from coal, which is a good thing. One such initiative towards less GHG emission output is SaskPower’s 350-megawatt natural gas Chinook Power Station near Swift Current.

Such initiatives even demonstrate how there are may be a few other jobs to found in the economy other than the traditional work in this province.

But all this takes us back to the job question … and perhaps the need for the Sask. Party government to take a look at job issues from a more fulsome perspective.

Let’s accept that the carbon tax fight is about preserving jobs (with, of course, a little politics thrown in, as was evident in the recent visit by Ontario Progressive Conservative Premier Doug Ford).

And let’s also accept this is an important fight, as the monthly job statistics for the province seem to indicate.

The latest Saskatchewan job statistics for September show a slight increase by 3,300 more people working from September 2017.

However, that good news was tempered by a rise in unemployment as well, the notion that Alberta seems to recovering more quickly and that the economists for RBC are describing Saskatchewan’s job recovering as “surprisingly weak.”

Given this situation, the Sask. Party government is obligated to do what it can to ensure good-paying jobs are available to workers in this province.

But consider this in the context of NDP Opposition concerns that most of the 640 construction workers at the Swift Current Chinook work site seem to be from out of province.

“The procurement process is not working as it should,” said NDP Leader Ryan Meili.

One gets that interprovincial trade agreements like the New West Partnership makes it more difficult for provinces to place restrictions on out-ofprovince contractors.

But remember: A year ago this Sask. Party was eager to tax out-of-province license plates at Saskatchewan job sites in retaliation to unproven allegations that the Alberta government was engaging in similar favouritism.

Shouldn’t the Saskatchewan government be as vigilant about protecting existing jobs as it is about losing future jobs to a carbon tax?

After all, that’s what provincial politicians are supposed to do.

Is the pie up to scratch?

In a discussion reminiscent of the artificial versus real Christmas tree debate, I listened to a group discuss the pros and cons of pies made from scratch versus store bought.

I don’t like pie. I’m not a big fan of any type of dessert but I would choose cake over pie if given an option. My husband, on the other hand loves pie, and we often celebrate his birthday with Shelley Luedtke one since he doesn’t like cake. It’s okay, we’ve managed to stay married for almost three decades. We ensure there are pie-eaters invited to his birthday and cake-eaters to mine so we aren’t stuck with copious amounts of either one.

When our family gathered around the Thanksgiving table rest assured we had pie. Actually more than one. I would never deprive them of their go-to dessert, I just don’t make them. They all ate storebought. Go ahead and gasp on behalf of my dessertloving family but clearly they weren’t the only ones eating such. One big box retailer sold an estimated 2.5 million pumpkin pies in just two days prior to Thanksgiving. Not to mention every grocery store, market, bakery and small business that sees a spike in sales this time of year.

We used to go the homemade route--if you consider canned filing worthy of the title homemade.

But one year (and only one) we started from scratch.

We acquired a fail-safe recipe from a trusted friend who also shared her insider secrets. We (I am using the pronoun ‘we’ rather loosely since my husband did 99% of the work) purchased a beautiful pumpkin and scooped, cleaned and cooked pumpkin guts.

We measured, mixed, stirred and baked. At the end of the process we had a beautiful pumpkin pie. I had a nibble. I will admit the bite tasted good--if you like pie, of course.

This past Thanksgiving our daughters got talking about their dad’s grandma and the variety of homemade pies that were offered no matter the season. My husband reminded me that when I joined the family she added angel food to the list of offer-

ings since I didn’t eat pie. It was such a loving gesture.

My grandma was like that, too. She made sure there was diet Coke in the fridge and my favourite cookies in the freezer. She was also the source of the lefse we couldn’t wait to eat each Christmas. But there was one other treat I remember fondly, particularly now that she has passed away.

Not long after I’d gotten married my grandparents, who lived in BC, came for a visit. I made a peanut butter chocolate roll and my grandma complimented me several times. She even asked for the recipe. Fast forward many years and we were visiting them in BC. As grandma began setting out a wonderful spread of our favourites she brought out a peanut butter chocolate roll. She had made dozens and dozens of my beloved cookies over the years, and batch after batch of lefse, but I recall with a smile the moment she brought out the same confection I had made years earlier and told me hers would never be as good as mine. What a gracious, if highly overstated, thing to say!

I am all for buying items that will reduce prep time for getting a Thanksgiving dinner on the table, so I have no qualms about pre-packaged pie. Neither did the crowds I saw circle a young employee who brought out a palette of a store’s famous pumpkin pie. The pies never made it to the shelf since shoppers were taking them right out of his hands or right off the palette.

So we, like many other families, cut into the store-bought dessert and I am told they enjoyed every bite. But I’m glad my daughters remembered the pies made by their grandmother. Perhaps the discussion of homemade versus store bought serves a role in bringing to mind the hardworking hands of those who cook from scratch for the ones they love.

Go ahead and eat the store bought. The flavour can be very good indeed, and because of the efficiencies of mass production some are ridiculously inexpensive. There’s nothing wrong with saving time and money. If It makes us more mindful of those who baked for us last weekend or many years ago, all the better. Because really, when it comes to enjoying the flavour of tradition, nothing tastes quite like the memory of homemade. That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money: Help - I’m being audited You filed your tax return on time and paid all your taxes. At least you think you have and then you get that dreaded notification from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA): You’re being audited! All you can see at the end of this is a big tax bill – but that doesn’t have to be the case when you know in advance what you may be getting into.

There is no guaranteed audit trigger but a common reason is a change in reporting.

You’re a small business owner, a contractor or freelancer and report big swings in revenue and expenses, up or down year-to-year. Your company’s gross margins are different than others in the industry. You collect a low rate of GST compared to revenues generated. On your individual return you simply claim a specific deduction

for the first time. Any or all of these can be red flags for the CRA, although the CRA doesn’t provide any guidance on what may force an audit to happen – and, in fact, an audit selection may be completely random, used as a way to keep Canada’s self-reporting tax system honest.

If you’ve been chosen for an audit, you’ll receive a letter from the CRA telling you what they are looking at and the taxation years that are being reviewed. The audit process often begins with a personal interview between you and the auditor representing the CRA. The first rule of audit: Park any hostility and be open and honest. Often the auditor is there to simply check on some details of your return and will leave without any changes.

While the CRA does

have the ability to request documents from you, such as books and records, invoices, bank statements and more, only provide them with what they’ve requested and nothing more.

It’s also standard practice to refer the CRA to your authorized representative – usually your lawyer or accountant.

Depending on the complexity of your books, an audit can take a few weeks or a few years. If you do owe money interest will be added from the time the unpaid tax was owing. The interest rate charged is based on the prescribed rate (currently 2%) in effect at the time the tax was owing plus 2% compounded daily. In rare cases, your tax bill may be lowered or you could possibly end up owing nothing at all.

Audits are just part of our tax system. You can take the sting out of them by maintain-

ing good books and records, being able to justify the positions you’ve taken, and working cooperatively with the auditor.

There have been so many personnel changes within the competitive curling world in Canada this season that fans will need a program to know who’s playing with whom.

Free agency in hockey and baseball means huge contracts for those signing with new teams.

In curling, free agency means joining a different team with an Olympic gold medal as the dangling carrot.

Teams regularly shuffle their personnel every four years. It’s called an Olympic cycle.

Skips put together a squad they feel can win the Canadian Olympic curling trials — likely to be held in Saskatoon in early December, 2021 — and then play together for three full years to prime the pump and work on team chemistry.

World champion Brad Gushue’s team was one of the few to maintain the status quo. But Kevin Koe of Alberta, a two-time world champ and three-time Brier winner, came up short in the 2018 Brier and enters this season with a new look. He added B.J. The stragglers on McEwen’s rink, Matt Wozniak and Denni Neufeld, were left to fend for themselves.

Cross Country Provincials Congratulations to the GFK Sr. Cross Country Team who competed at the Provincial Meet in Delisle on the weekend.

There were more than 700 athletes competing in races that each had more than 110 competitors. In the 5 km Senior Boys’ category, Brayden Hill finished 64th and Tucker Sharp finished 34th. In the 3 km Midget Boys’ category, Jonah Dyck finished 25th and Nathen Simons finished 28th. The GFK Team also finished 4th in the province for 2A

You were great athletic ambassadors for GFK! Junior boys’ volleyball (grades 7 – 9) is underway at GFK. The junior boys’ team will be practising and playing games Tuesday and Thursday after schools until District playoffs on Nov. 8.

Chase The Ace jackpot still up for grabs Submitted by Tara Cure It was another fun filled and successful night at Chase The Ace on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Over 105 people were in attendance, helping build the pot to over $5800.

Darryl Sutherland’s ticket was drawn on this night. He drew the 8 of Clubs which allowed him to take home more than $380.

Kierra Goudy was the lucky winner of the Toonie table draw.

Kids Sport and the Carlyle Cougars ran the kitchen for wing night, and poutines. They were such a hit, they sold out!

Chase The Ace runs again Saturday, Oct. 20.

The pot will be well over $6500! The kitchen will be hosted by a group of moms with a full on shrimp feast - shrimp tacos, and coconut shrimp with pina colada sauce to name a few.

As well, we will have a custom made rocking chair from Carlyle’s own Bluenose Carpenter up

for grabs. This one-ofa-kind rocking chair is hand made of salvaged wood from an old school house.

Cornerstone Theatre is presenting an encore presentation Submitted Over the past fifteen years one of the highlights of Carlyle’s annual Dickens Village Festival has been Cornerstone Theatre’s Christmas musical. The re-telling of “A Christmas Carol” has become a much-anticipated event, in part because of the group’s ability to present Charles Dickens’ warhorse in a new format almost every year. Past versions have included contemporary, Western and 1950’s, as well as the traditional London setting. Scripts have sometimes been purchased but more often are written by club members, with popular music selections performed by the many talented singers in the group.

This year, in a slight departure from tradition, Cornerstone is proud to present an encore presentation of last year’s original musical, “Carol”. The contemporary Wall Street story, written by Jesse Twietmeyer, with songs composed by Jesse, Dianne and Samantha Twietmeyer, garnered rave

reviews from locals and visitors alike. Comments on 2017’s performance included “You really raised the bar this time”, “the best play I’ve ever seen” and “this should be on Broadway”. Many people, cast members included, remarked on the quality and instant familiarity of the songs.

With all of the creative and emotional investment that we have in this show, Cornerstone begs your indulgence in allowing us to perform it for you again. We promise you will not be disappointed. Although some key cast members from last year’s show were unable to return for various reasons, we have found amazing people to replace them.

ton, NS recently. They visited with Susan’s sister Trudy Davidson and her partner Ed Miller.

Some of their two-week visit was spent touring the area.

Ray and Jessi Nickel, William, Callahan and Isobelle enjoyed an extensive trip at Thanksgiving. They left on October 2nd and stopped at Unity to visit with Ray’s parents, Wes

and Sherri Nickel. They then travelled north of Plamondon, AB. (Jessi noted that gas prices were $1.34 a litre and the farmers there are just starting to harvest as there are a lot of crops still standing) They visited with Jessi’s close friend, Kandra and her husband Devin and their first newborn, Maverick.

The Wawota Library held an Early Years Fair last Saturday at the Wawota Town Hall. Several groups who offer services and programs in the community were involved. Fun activities for the youngsters were provided and a soup and sandwich luncheon served.

The congregation of the Wawota/Maryfield United Churches are enjoying a series of

sermons about other religions. Last week we heard about Judaism. In the following weeks we will hear about Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. These sermons are interesting and broadens our minds as to how others worship.

Last night I watched a four-part documentary on HLN, “ How It Really Happened”. I had recently re-read, “The Stranger Beside Me” by Anne Rice and both were a descriptive story about Ted Bundy. It is the type of story that you can reread several times and

still be amazed at how Ted Bundy committed over 35 murders over 10 or more years throughout several states. He left little or no evidence at most of the crime scenes. He also escaped from jail, not once but twice. It seems like a strange coincidence that he and Anne Rule worked together at a Help Call Centre for several years and after his conviction she went on to write her book about him.

As I had stated in my last news column in Oct. 5 issue that I would probably not receive much news to report for the Oct. 4 deadline, which proved correct, so I have now included the news in this week’s column. Hope everyone had a super Happy Thanksgiving.

Ernest and Dianne Lemieux travelled to Lloydminster on Friday, Sept. 28 to visit with their son Michael, Lynsey and family. They helped grandson Mason celebrate his 3rd birthday on Sept. 29. On their way home on Oct. 1 they stopped in North Battleford to visit with Henri and Elaine Poirier.

Visiting with Garnet and Jean Ball were son Garrett and his wife Natasha and dogs of Airdrie, AB. Congratulations to Steven Bendtsen. Tyler Arthur and Kim Carlsen who won their seats by acclamation as councillors for Divisions 2, 4 and 6 in our RM of Reciprocity #32.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the Stewart and Mohrbutter families on the death of Eveline (Mohrbutter) Stewart who passed away at the age of 87 years, on Oct. 10 at Sunset Haven Home, Carnduff. A service to celebrate the life of Eveline will be held Nov. 24 at the Royal Canadian Legion Lounge in Oxbow. Condolences are extended to all family members and close friends.

There were many relatives from near and far, as well as many friends who gathered at the Alida Hall for the Memorial celebration of life in honour of Joyce and Bob Peet on Oct. 5.

Patricia Anne Anderson, of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, formerly of Carlyle, Saskatchewan, born August 24, 1943 passed away peacefully on Friday, October 12, 2018 at the age of 75 years. Maryfield Sunrise Villa News Submitted by Janet Mark Eleven people attended the Oct. 3 meeting of the Tenants Association.

Discussion centred on where to set up the Floor Curling game, donated by the Villa Guild. Ted, Fred and Ferne agreed to be the committee in charge.

Since we cannot use the halls and have 12 wheelchairs to park at mealtime, we have only space for one House. The first game took place on Oct 9th, beside the card tables.

The German Mennonite Church of Maryfield held a worship service led by Lucas Ens, with Michael Penner giving the message.

Music was provided by Evelina Neufeld, piano, and Sarah Ens, violin.

Ralph had been too late to save a baby bird caught by its leg. Grace had watched a mother bird push all four of her young out of the nest. Fred watched little birds pull wool from the fence. He later saw that they used it to line their nests before laying.

When Freda cleaned her bird house she found it stuffed full of cherry pits. Jessie had found that the only way to discourage barnswallows above your door, was to pour water on their

nests. A cat which Leora rejected in the house soon had 4 kittens outside in the nest.

For years bees nested in the north wall of a lean to “summer kitchen”. On Christmas Day, 1972, a heavy snowfall bowed in the kitchen roof. A new kitchen was indicated. How to get rid of the bees???

Redvers beekeeper, Angela Wizniak, said, “Call me when they swarm.”

On the first hot summer day the swarm lit in the nearby Manitoba maple.

Mrs Wizniak, in her bee outfit, climbed up and captured the queen. The swarm followed it into a hive she had brought.

She advised us to burn the sections of “foul brood” where the bees hatched. The sections
