Ron Paul receives Community Leadership Award

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Ron Paul came to Carlyle in 1983. He operated Carlyle Building Supplies until 2006. He sold the business in 2006. Ron involved himself in his community in many facets. He served as mayor, belonged to many community boards and spirited many projects that benefitted the citizens of Carlyle. Having sold his business Ron continued his interest in the community and made time to volunteer for many more worthwhile projects.

The award was presented by the Lieutenant Governor, Russell Mirasty, on behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan. Ron received the award on September 29, 2019 at the Conexus Art Centre in Regina. Ron was nominated for this award by town of Carlyle councillor, Jenn Sedor.

I asked Ron if he had a particular project or event that was very memorable. He smiled and quickly recalled “Moonlight Madness”. It was a chamber of commerce event put on by the local businesses. The highlight was the “ping pong ball drop” which turned out to be especially spectacular! The balls were dropped from a low flying aircraft and began bouncing everywhere, onto rooftops, into the back of half tons and anywhere else those attending could imagine! Finding a black ping pong ball would endow a huge saving at a local participating merchant.

The event was rightly named “Moonlight Madness” as people were literally searching high and low. Ron also states that the Rustic Relics museum was one he is very proud of and its importance to the community and surrounding area.

One other project Ron feels that was well worthwhile to the town was the building of the wheel chair accessible Lion’s washroom facility.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • Addictions issues added to mental health concerns resulted in an argument which lead to a fight which lead to two people being arrested and charged for Assault.

When you don’t get along please don’t abuse substances with the person you don’t get along with. If you choose to do so expect that the Police will get involved.

• We had several missing persons reported. One was actually determined to be an individual looking for their ex so that they could return a photo album and they expected us to assist. They were basically told “Not our monkey, not our circus” Okay, we were a little more polite, but the caller was very unsatisfied that we were not doing what they expected of us.

• Another missing person was quickly located hiding in the dark in one of our educational facilities. Now, when I did not want to go to class I sure did not try and hide in the school. Not that I was good at hiding, but going to school to hide to avoid going to school?

I am sure I am missing something.

• We are investigating a youth assaulting a sibling and damaging property. Unfortunately the youth is travelling down the wrong path.

We walk that path and if they continue down the path we will interrupt their voyage and assist in commencing the beginning of their criminal record.

• A youth came to the Detachment to report threats via social media. Upon investigating the complaint the Member found the complainant had also sent some unacceptable messages. We basically told the complainant to “grow up” and our investigation continues only to tell the other social media user to “grow up”.

• Alcohol, plus social media, plus hormones equals a call to the Police. Please stay off social media when intoxicated and angry.

• So, there is an individual that has a history of violence which ended a previous relationship.

Okay, there are lots of individuals like this. More specifically one in our Detachment recently entered into another relationship with someone who also has, let us say, a checkered past. When the alleged aggressor started to be abusive and assault their new “love” they were surprised to find the new victim defended themselves and utilized a weapon on the aggressor. Thus a charge of assault against the one who was stabbed and assault with a weapon against the other.

• We have been getting several break and enters and attempted break and enters in our area and the surrounding Detachment area’s.

If you see something out of the ordinary please call 310- 7267. (310RCMP) • An individual was marking natural gas lines and failed to notify the homeowner that he would be in the back yard being they did not think anyone was home. When they realized someone was home they chose to knock on the back door. The home

owner called an off duty Member who called on duty Members. Everything was legit and the worker was given some advice on how to conduct their duties without attracting the Police.

• If you choose to separate from your spouse, please don’t just change the locks. Remember it does not matter who pays the bills. If you are common law or married the property is mutual property. You cannot prevent one individual from entering the residence. So far so good, however, we may get involved more than by just providing advice.

• The good news is some of the farmers have been able to get out in the fields. The bad news is not for long and for one individual worse being their bailer caught fire. The Alida Volunteer Fire Department attended.

• An intoxicated individual was hanging around another individual’s yard. They called the Police and the intoxicated individual took this as being a good time to leave. Patrols did not locate the individual and they chose to return only to flee again.

• Members responded to a call of an unwanted intoxicated guest at a residence. Upon arrival the guest had departed and the caller chose not to co-operate with our investigation and would not identify the previously unwanted guest. Thus we had nobody to look for. Fine by us.

• We received several calls in relation to driving complaints. We patrolled looking for a vehicle with three individuals, including a child without a seatbelt. However, we did not locate

it. We did locate a white cube van and believe wind may have been the reason it was allegedly all over the road. A vehicle that was speeding in the construction zone was located and due to circumstances they were provided a warning.

• We had a reported “gas and dash”. Due to video we were able to identify the alleged offender and determined it was a “too much on the mind and just forgot”.

The gas was paid for by a sheepish individual.

• If you like my articles you should read those of my colleague in Moosomin. The following is an example of his writing skills: • A cow was struck by a vehicle on the 600.

Lucky for us, the cow left his ID behind as the ear tag became dislodged.

A warrant of arrest has been issued for TX 15bc.

The vehicle and driver were fine. The cow has no ID and will have difficulty if it gets stopped driving a vehicle, attempting to board an aircraft, or tries to enter a licenced premise.

• Speaking of not being any help to you, a

couple had split up and there was a complaint about harassing communications from one to the other. I dunno, the report speaks of a microchipped cat and one of the two has custody/ownership of it and I’m guessing this didn’t sit well with the caller. There was talk of the someone calling their lawyer, and in any event, Cst. Berkshire was quickly able to determine we were not the agency to assist. File concluded. I’m looking up at the ceiling of my office right now trying to recall from my childhood any cop show that had calls about cat custody issues and I’m coming up dry. Likely a good thing, because if I had any idea police got calls like this I might have become an alarm company sales rep.

• Drugs are bad.

Some are real bad, as in the drugs one of our callers was using. Apparently after doing some illegal substances, the caller did not think they were “right” and they began to see people. We were unfortunately not able to identify the caller or

the phone and after extensive patrols we were unable to locate the caller. I know in Hollywood they just “ping” the cell phone. Unfortunately, in the rural area it gives us too large of a geographic area.

• A property owner found some oats, trail cams and a hunting camp on their land which was posted as “No Hunting” The property was removed by the property owner.

• We know business owners can be busy and may not pay the appropriate attention to the money being handed to them but if it is rough and crinkled take a look. We had several counterfeit bills passed throughout the Detachment area. They include $5, $20 and $100 bills.

If you take the time you can tell they are not the real deal. If you are not sure compare them to a real bill. Some of those seized are not even the same size. Our investigation continues.

Nastiness will make it tough to govern

By Murray Mandryk This federal campaign has been far too ugly.

It would be unfair to blame any one particular party, but it’s never the best strategy for anyone in the long run.

The problem in this campaign is that all parties seem to be held captive by their dogma. And in the political world that may eventually require parities to reach out to others for their supporter, that may prove to be unhelpful.

We are a week away from the Oct. 21 federal vote, one that will most likely produce a minority government of one variety or the other if the current opinion polls are vaguely accurate.

That result won’t be pleasing for Conservative supporters either way and will be especially frustrating if it is a Liberal minority backed by New Democrats and Green Party supporters.

For those already raising the spectre of Western alienation, and especially those who have been hollering about Western separation, the reality that you might have actually work with those whom you have spent an election despising.

And that difficulty has likely only been made worse. This is always difficult. This may be impossible after this campaign, especially last week’s English TV debate.

Of course, TV debates are always loud and more than little obnoxious. And in campaign where almost any personal slight seems acceptable, a few cheeky shots would seem permissible. In last week’s TV debate, they were even a little effective.

For example, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh likely scored when speaking directly to voters on the difference between Conservative leader Andrew Scheer’s and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s positions on climate change:” You do not need to choose between Mr. Delay and Mr. Deny. There is another option,” Singh said.

Similarly, Scheer was actually rather effective at hammering away at Trudeau on the Prime Minister’s firing of the only First Nations Justice Minister this country has ever had. And on Trudeau’s penchant to draw unpopular Progressive Conservative Premier Doug Ford into the federal election, Scheer noted to the Prime Minister that Ontario Liberal leadership was open.

Even Trudeau, who had a very bad debate night by any objective measure, managed to get in a shot or two. His best one tied Scheer to his old rival for the Conservative leadership, Maxime Bernier, who now leads the People’s Party of Canada. “Mr. Bernier, your role on this stage tonight seems to be to say publicly what Mr. Scheer thinks privately,” Trudeau quipped.

Some might find even this level of discourse too personal and inappropriate for the serious job of running the country.

But compared with how this debate started, these were mild exchanges.

Scheer kicked off the debate by what can only be fairly described as a nasty attack on Trudeau.

On the initially question on global affairs, Scheer quickly pivoted to the admittedly ridiculous blackface/brownface incidents of Trudeau’s younger years and launched into a diatribe on the Prime Minister: “You’re a phoney. You’re a fraud and you do not deserve to be prime minister,” Scheer said.

Perhaps Conservatives who despise Trudeau loved this. No doubt, that one was at least one group Scheer was aiming at. The other group he was aiming at was anyone potentially exploring for Trudeau.

But it had nothing to do with policy. Really, it was a blatant attempt to get out a clip, one that supporters will eagerly share on FaceBook and other social platforms, ensuring its life continues.

Maybe it’s good for party morale, but it isn’t helpful in an election campaign where voters are already being turned off voters.

And, it may not be very helpful come the aftermath of this election when the time comes to find a way to govern a rather divided country.

Asked…but often not easily answered It has been 15 years since the NBC hit Friends aired its final episode but the show has remained a ratings bonanza in reruns and has seen success in finding new audiences. So much success in fact, that Netflix paid $100 million to continue streaming the show through 2019.

In its 10 seasons several catch phrases made their way into popular culture, with one of Shelley Luedtke the most well-known being Joey Tribbiani’s, “How you doin’?”. It was in the script less than 20 times over 236 episodes but the line made an impact thanks to Matt LeBlanc’s delivery and emphasis on the word ‘you’ along with the characteristic tilt of the head in his classic pick-up line.

Though our intent is not quite as flirtatious, we pose a variation of the same question quite often.

Hey, how are things going? What’s new? How are you? It’s a question we use as a casual greeting or conversation starter. We might treat the query in a rather glib manner, thinking that people are just asking out of obligation or social convention.

Often at the conclusion of a restaurant meal servers will ask what our plans are for the rest of the day. It’s a great way to fill time while waiting for payment to take place. Question asked, answered and everyone moves on.

But what if the responses were not in keeping with the accepted line of small talk? Imagine the reaction if patrons didn’t reply with plans of attending a movie or concert, or heading home or going out with friends, but instead talked about sitting vigil at a bedside, or returning to a courtroom, or any other painful experience that could be just as likely a possibility. But of course social niceties suggest the circumstance warrants the more appropriate response.

I ran into someone I hadn’t seen for quite some time so as I was walking past her I casually tossed out the uninspired, “Hey, how’re you doing?” We

are so accustomed to how these interactions go we expect a non-committal variation of fine…okay…not bad…how ‘bout you…and simply move on with our day. It’s not that we don’t care about the question or the response, it’s just that we are overly familiar with how the conversation is likely to go.

But in this instance, I was decidedly unprepared for her response. She is facing a major health issue.

I was totally taken aback and immediately wished I hadn’t been so flippant in my throwaway question.

But I am so, so glad she decided to be honest with me in that moment. She didn’t need to. It was a choice on her part, and one I am grateful she made.

But I wonder how many people feel it’s a question they should probably dodge; one necessary to sidestep because they don’t think people actually want the truth, or worse, don’t have time to listen to what’s really going on.

We are social beings. We need to connect and share with others, and to have others share and connect with us. While it’s true some of us are more introverted than others, we all need continual interactions for our physical, emotional and mental well-being. Yet the reality is an increasing number of people say they are lacking in strong, meaningful relationships, and these findings are cutting across all ages.

It stops me in my tracks to wonder how many times I have brushed past someone or gave off an impression that I wouldn’t take the time to listen to how they really are. It is disheartening to think how many times I have let people feel unseen or unheard, or how often I didn’t think someone was interested enough in me to know how I really am.

But perhaps the good news is hearing from those who say they lack meaningful relationships.

Maybe they were willing to admit that for one important reason: what they want most of all are, in fact, meaningful relationships.

The remedy may be easier than we think. There are people genuinely interested in how you are doing. It’s more than a catch phrase. It’s a prescription that may be as simple as answering a question.

That’s my outlook.

Congratulations to Stephanie Leech and Trent McNally on the birth of their daughter, Ara Rose Amberlee. She was born at 11:59 on Sept. 30 and weighed 7 lbs. 9 oz.

The Wawota Playground Committee is to be complimented on their hard work with their various fundraisers. They have raised $65,863.21 from the following events, a pizza lunch, a dance, golf tournament, a dunk tank at heritage Days, slo-pitch and received a donation from RBC. This money will be used to replace some playground structures.

Word has been received of the passing of Ron Beck. He passed away on Oct. 5 at the Galloway Health Centre in Oxbow. He was 77 years old. There will be no funeral by request.

Wawota would like to welcome Marion Littlewolfe to our town. She hails from Yorkton and has purchased the home at 204 Main Street. She works

at Bear Claw Casino, has an adult daughter, Kennedy and a cat Chaplin.

Rianne (Wight) and Zach Watson welcomed a son , William “Liam” Douglas . Liam is a brother to sister, Clarke and a grandson to Sherri (and the late Doug) Wight and Shane and Judy Watson of Yellow Grass. He is also a great grandson for Gertie Condie and Joyce McIndoe (Maryfield), Merle Watson, Weyburn and Yvonne and Basil Simpson (Griffin) Visiting with Shirley Corkish this past weekend were her son, Jeff Corkish , Owen, Addie and Mason from Cottage grove, MN. Visiting with Jean Bogner were her daughter, Laurie Bogner from Burnaby, BC. Thanksgiving guests were grandson, Brennan Hovind and his wife Karen from Saltcoats.

Sympathy to the family of the late Pat Oliver who passed away on Oct. 9 at deer View Lodge. She was

Tickets were issued for liquor in a vehicle - $360, no insurance - $580, fail to wear seatbelt - $175, operate a motor vehicle with a youth under 7 without a seatbelt - $175, operate a motor vehicle with a youth under 16 years old without a seatbelt - $175, and obstructed licence plate -$150, exceed 60 km/hr when passing an emergency vehicle - $342, exceed 60 km/ hr when in a construction zone - $500 and $924, and the most expensive speeding ticket was for $538.

• Warnings were issued for speeding, fail to produce registration, operate a motor vehicle with a youth under 7 years of age without a seatbelt, obstructed licence plate, fail to produce drivers licence, and inadequate windshield.

Inspection notices were issued for remove window tint, inadequate windshield, inadequate headlamps, inadequate day time running lights, and inadequate mudflaps.

Treating folks . . . and bears

By Linda Wegner We have a lot of uninvited guests go through our yard. First, a word of explanation: the neighbours on either side of us have fenced yards, we don’t and that gives roaming deer and bears free access from the back alley to the street in front of our house. Ironically, earlier this week one of those neighbours had their bountiful pumpkin crop smashed and their compost bin overturned while folks on the other side had their fence knocked over in the critters’ pursuit of their bountiful crop of grapes. Our compost bin, though, is securely attached to the deck and the garden is long ago harvested and cleaned up. I’m not bragging, I’m just grateful that we don’t have to figure out to deal with these visitors.

This week I read a book in which Max Lucado presented a terrific Biblical pattern of how we should treat friends, as well as strangers and it both challenged and blessed

me. You see, for more years than I can remember, I have made it my daily practice to attempt to encourage at least one person – whether I know them or not. • Two individuals were charged with failing to comply with their release conditions. They will have to go to court and explain why they chose not to follow their release conditions.

• We had several false alarms. On one instance we attended a business. The employee that met us was hesitant to co-operate being the kind of business that was being operated. They panicked and gave a false name. Previous to the departure of the Police the employee admitted they had made an error in judgement and they were advised they could have been arrested for obstructing justice.

• Two intoxicated individuals were located and one chose to try and run away. They did not succeed and were lodged for the night without charges.

• A vehicle was pulled over for an obstructed licence plate. There was a strong odour of cannabis in the vehicle and the driver provided an oral test resulting in a positive reading and a 60-day suspension and a $150 fine for the obstructed licence plate.

• We had another racoon attack a vehicle on the highway. The racoon lost while the vehicle received some damage.

Carievale 4-H Beef Club news Submitted The Carievale 4-H Beef Club held their regular monthly meeting on Oct. 7 at the Carievale Golden Years Centre with 16 members present.

Kamryn Gilliland called the meeting to order and the 4-H Pledge was recited. The minutes from the September meeting were read

by Karissa Elliott. The financial report was presented by Ryan Cowan.

Old business – Mari-

sol Gilliland, Mya Gilliland, Ryan Cowan, Jordan Cowan and Vanessa Cowan attended Vetavision in Saskatoon on Sept. 28 and reported on their favourite stations.

We joined in with the Glen Ewen Trailblazers for the tour.

District meeting was Oct. 16 and Teresa Cowan, Mikyla Cliffe, Kamryn Gilliland and Ryan Cowan will be our representatives. Took down a list of those interested in attending Agribition for

team grooming.

New Business - Nov. 6 is show your 4-H colours day; wear green.

We decided that each member will bring a donation for the food bank to our next meeting in support of the 4H Sustainability Initiative – 4H, Food and You. District Rally will be on Nov. 15 hosted by the Alida Beef Club in Redvers.

Next meeting will be Monday, Nov. 4 at 7 pm at the Carievale Golden Years Centre.

No big oil revenues in near future

By Calvin Daniels The Saskatchewan government’s finance department must be wondering just where the revenue streams in this province are coming from in the next several months at least.

It can’t be much better in the other Prairie provinces either.

We know oil is still in the doldrums.

Recently JWN Energy posted drilling activity in Western Canada is currently depressed at historic levels, according to a new report from Peters & Co. Limited.

Drilling activity is generally a strong indicator of the optimism of the oil sector. When prices and prospects are strong they go looking for more oil.

If sale prices for crude are depressed there is little reason to look for new oil if it isn’t selling at a good price.

The reasons for the doldrums of the sector are obviously many, although many in the west point at the lack of an oil pipeline to eastern

markets. That is largely a red herring regarding the current sluggish oil sector when one remembers it was not that many years ago crude oil was more than $100 a barrel sans a pipeline.

Any suggested pipeline in recent years would also still be in construction, so not a factor today.

That all said it could be argued a pipeline would buffer prices in the years ahead.

But, today, provincial coffers will not be seeing big oil revenues.

Potash sales are also sluggish.

It was in August when the Mosaic Company planned to indefinitely shut down its Colonsay, Sask., potash facility, which would result in well over 300 workers being laid off.

The reason was to work on reducing inventories which means sales are depressed on the sector, and that means reduced provincial revenues are likely.

In Saskatchewan the third leg of the three-

legged economic stool has been agriculture.

Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Crop Report for Oct. 1 to 7, reported only 55 per cent of the crop was in the bin.

While up from 47 per cent a week earlier it remained well behind the five-year (2014-18) average of 82 per cent for the same time of year.

A look at the severe snow storms hitting Manitoba over the Thanksgiving weekend, and the generally dreary weather in Saskatchewan does not bode well for getting the rest of the crop in the bin, not to mention the likelihood of reduced grades for crop still in the field, and the farmer costs of drying grain. The situation in agriculture could well go from being an economic asset to Prairie provincial governments to a sector in need of financial aid given the 2019 harvest conditions.

The triple whammy will definitely put some pressure on provincial budgets and in terms of local economies as well.

More than just books at the library

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Southeast Regional Library is going through several changes.

“It’s not the library you remember” is their tagline. The focus is to create accessible space in communities, with books being only one of the options.

The focus is on programs, interactive displays, community outreach, technology, community celebrations, online resources and then, of course books.

A very important point people should be aware of is the value of a library.

Had everyone purchased, as opposed to borrowing books at the local library in Carlyle, the total cost to purchase these books would have been over $103,000.

The library is open 25 hours a week.

Come January the hours will expand to 30 hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday.

Coming events and programs at the library include retired navy officer; Gord Hunter, who will be reading from his book “No - Badge Kitlock” on Oct. 22 at 1:30 p.m.

Angels and confessions of a cloud watcher

By Ken Rolheiser Anything unrelated to elephants is irrelephant.

Technically, Moses was the first person with a tablet downloading data from the cloud. Clouds fascinate me. The animation and shapes are often related to the angels, it seems.

I remember playing in the park with two of my grandchildren whose grandfather had been born to eternal life earlier. As they enjoyed the wind and sun, a whispy angel like cloud hovered over the tress and park.

I took pictures of it. Later I showed them where Grandpa was watching over us in the park.

St Bernard of Clairvaux had a nickname for guardian angels.

He called them “bodyguards”. He suggested that we need to follow close to them and we will dwell in the protection of the Most High God. If temptation approaches, ask for their help. (from Sermons on Psalm 91 Sermon 12).

October 2 is the feast of the Guardian Angels. Angels exist

and are our guides and constant companions according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Until our deaths we are “surrounded by their watchful care and intercession.” When we are in spiritual or physical danger we can call on their help.

One of the prayers I say for those I love is that their guardian angel will be a large and fierce presence to scare away any harm the evil one might intend, especially at night or in places of danger. So far it seems to be working.

There are many stories of their watchful protection. One internet source tells this true story of an encounter with an angel that saved her and her husband’s lives.

They were sleeping on their house boat early one morning when they heard the boat engine being cranked.

Her husband jumped up and yelled.

The man who had been vigorously cranking the engine vanished into thin air. Then they realized the boat was full of smoke and there was

a blazing fire near their 100 gallon fuel tank.

The fire department said if they had not awakened when they did, they would have died from the smoke inhalation in minutes. That day they found out that they were expecting twins.

Daniel Vel Martin shares this story: Her father was a hardline atheist, Portuguese Brazilian. At age 65 he was seated on the sidewalk when an out of control army jeep came towards him. He only had time to close eyes. He knew he would die. But something lifted him some ten feet up. From there he saw the jeep destroy the wall.

Then that same force put him above the jeep and dropped him.

Her father never told this story to anyone else.

He was later healed from prostate cancer at age 70 after Daniel prayed for him. The tumor disappeared. He died a believer wearing a Star of David necklace.

Stories about angels have been around since the time of Moses. Angels on Earth is a cur-

Fire drill at Arcola School

RESPs. One less thing to worry about.

By Kelly Johnson The Observer A fire drill was held at Arcola School on Tuesday, Oct. 8 with Kisbey Fire Department (KFD) in attendance.

Students exited the school promptly when the alarm sounded. It occurred just after 1 p.m., the students having just returned from the noon break.

KFD arrived in good time in the emergency vehicle “lights flashing”.

This exercise was for the fire department’s benefit as well as the students.

The firemen in full gear, entered the school to confirm everyone had exited. To make the drill more realistic, one of the exits remained locked.

The exercise was held in conjunction with Fire Safety Week.

At the completion of the drill, the “all okay” was given by Ryan Da-

vid, Kisbey’s fire chief.

The students then assembled in the school gym. Principal of Arcola School Ron Wardrope was very pleased with the exercise commenting, “response time was good”. Members of the fire department then spoke to students in the gym and went to each classroom after the assembly to discuss the importance of fire safety.

Huskies take leave of absence from Big 6

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury The Oxbow Huskies will be taking a leave of absence from the Big 6 Hockey League for the 2019-20 season.

The announcement was made at the Big 6’s annual organizational meeting on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies have been part of the league since the 200405 season, and have had some strong seasons, but struggled to have enough players last season.

President Rae Wright said their decision was a surprise, but a few of Oxbow’s better players weren’t expected back for this season.

He hopes the team will return for the 2020-21 campaign.

“It’s always harder to start up again than it is to keep a team going, so I wouldn’t be surprised either way,” said Wright.

The move leaves the league with nine teams for this season: the Arcola-Kisbey Combines, Bienfait Coalers, Carlyle Cougars, Carnduff Red Devils, Kipling-Windthorst Oil Kings, Midale Mustangs, Redvers Rockets, Wawota Flyers and Yellow Grass Wheat Kings.

The league has also implemented a new elite player rule that is expected to create more

parity.

Each team will be allowed to carry three players who played at least 30 games of junior A level hockey or better.

An exemption will be granted for this season for three more players who were part of last year’s team.

There is also an exemption granted for any players who are playing for the team based where they grew up.

“It’s to try to equalize the elite players, so that they can’t all go to one team, or to two teams. If there are that many elite players, they have to disburse more

throughout the league.”

Wright said he has received a lot of complaints since Yellow Grass entered the league in 2016-17, because the town is close to Weyburn. He believes Yellow Grass had 10 players who would have been classified as elite imports last season, when the franchise won the Big 6 title.

No other team was close, other than Redvers, but Wright was quick to point out that the Rockets had a lot of homegrown players on their team.

A new fire hall in Carlyle

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury Years of hard work and fundraising are about to pay off, with the construction of the new fire hall for the rural municipality of Moose Mountain and the town of Carlyle.

Fire Chief Don VanMeer said construction is slated to start next week. The company that is to build the new fire hall has been given the green light to proceed, and the lot where it is to be built is being cleared.

The building is located on Eighth Street in Carlyle, next to the water treatment plant, and is a block away from the current fire hall.

“The hall that we are presently in is just undersized for our equipment, and we don’t have a proper meeting room in it, either,” said VanMeer.

The fire department has to juggle which equipment it has stored inside, and which is kept outdoors.

“Our skidoo trailer and skidoo comes in during the winter so that it’s ready and our wildland fire equipment gets put outside, for example,” he said.

Once the new fire hall is constructed, they will have sufficient space throughout the year for all of their firefighting and rescue apparatus.

“This is going to help with a lot more space between units.”

The fire department would have adequate meeting room and washroom facilities, along with a kitchen if its members respond to a longer call.

“When we come in from a call, we’ll have somewhere we can pull something together, and lots of our spouses like to help, so they’ll come down and help to prepare meals for people that are out on long calls,” said VanMeer. “If we’re actively going at night, we’ll have a place to come back in and do that stuff, where we didn’t have that before.”

VanMeer said construction was supposed to start this week, but with all of the rain, it

has been pushed back.

It’s not known how long it will take to finish the building, but he hopes it can be completed late in 2020 or early in 2021.

The Carlyle Fire Department has 22 paid, on-call firefighters on its current duty roster, but about 15 of them are active. The firefighters come from Carlyle, Arcola and Manor, along with the RM of Moose Mountain.

The firefighters are “pretty well overwhelmed” knowing that construction is about to begin on a building they have needed for a long time, the fire chief said.

The department has spent years fundraising for the new building.

People in the community have patiently stood beside the fire department throughout this process, and have shown how much they want to see the town get a new

fire station.

“This has been a project that has been in the works for about 10 years, and they have continued to donate every year and help build the funds, so that we can make this happen,” he said.

An annual golf tournament has raised aobut $100,000 to help pay for the building.

“There has been a lot of meetings over the years. We did try to figure out building onto the old hall, and updating it, and then it was decided to go with a newer and a bigger building. There’s been lots of meetings.

The meetings have gone on for years too, with the fire board, the RM and the town council.”

Deputy Fire Chief Rob Klassen said they’re excited that this project is coming to fruition.

Once the new hall is constructed, VanMeer is hopeful the fire department will be able to attract a few more members as well.
