What the Dickens was happening in Canada during the Victorian Times?

And yup! We’re having one – an Old Time Dance, that is - on Friday afternoon, Nov. 30 as part of the Dickens festival!

Didn’t you ever wonder “What the Dickens was happening in Canada during those Victorian times?

“And then, sometimes (though few would confess this) “When exactly were those “Dickens” times anyways?”. Just FYI – I taught history and I had to Google this too!

Charles Dickens, the “Founder of our Feast”, or at least the writer who was the inspiration behind our Dickens Festival, lived from February 7, 1812 to June 9, 1870.

To put that in a Canadian perspective, Saskatchewan as a province did not even exist until 1905, so we were still “Rupert’s Land” at this time.

Many of our settler forefathers came this way by Canoes and Red River carts, because the first train only crossed this territory in 1882.

And locally, in 1882, Cannington Manor was created.

But before all that, during the Victorian time in Canada, (before 1870) The First Nations people were living traditional lifestyles, and were trading with the Hudsons’ Bay Company and the Northwest Company, and the fur trade was thriving. The Metis Nation had been created out of the unions between Scottish and French traders and the First Nations peoples.

Agricultural settlers from Europe made their way to this area through some of the most adverse conditions for European folk, and only with the help of their First Nations neighbors did they manage to survive and to make a home in this unfamiliar and often hostile climate.

Some early stories from the Oxbow area even tell about families living in “houses” built by digging into the banks of the river, while the homestead was underway!

The settlers to the area brought very few possessions, but those who could, brought their musical instruments. Because what is life without a good party?

My friend, John Arcand, tells a story about his Metis grandfather in the mid 1800’s, who would host the local gatherings at his house.

People would travel from miles around on horseback, in buggies and on foot.

They would arrive with women and children and food and maybe a jug of something, and there would be so many people that the wood stove had to be carried out of the house to make room for everyone.

The fiddler would be perched on the table, pushed into a corner of the room, and he would play all night, keeping the rhythms with his feet and playing the dance tunes as everyone danced their cares and worries away.

Albert Poncelet, from Whitewood area related stories that his grandfather told, which would have been in about the same time frame, about how all the locals would travel from miles around to the schoolhouse, and often by the time they got there in the winter, the fiddles would be all frozen up, and would need some time to thaw.

Albert told me that sometimes, the fiddler only knew a couple of tunes, but he’d play those same melodies as waltzes, as jigs, as reels, as foxtrots and schottisches – whatever people wanted to dance!

And folks didn’t mind.

They just wanted the fun and fellowship of the music and the dance.

Children would fall asleep on the piles of fur coats under the tables, and dawn would be breaking before anyone left to go home to morning chores.

That is a precious part of our prairie heritage, and one which is still thriving today thanks to music camps like The Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party.

Well, at the Dickens festival, we’ll have the horse and buggy, and we’ll have the music, thanks to The Happy Wanderers, and this year, we’ll have the dancing.

But we’re not staying up until the wee hours of the morning during the Dickens festival in Carlyle.

Instead, we’ll be welcoming our elders and community members in the afternoon, when driving is a little easier on the nerves and parking is still abundant.

Lampman Grizzlies take second at Kipling Conference Volleyball Championships

By Laura Kish Kipling School’s Senior Girls Volleyball team and Kipling School hosted an exciting day of volleyball competition with six teams from areas of Saskatchewan including Balcarres, Lampman, Redvers, Indian Head and Langenburg on Saturday, November 3rd. Lampman team members include Mackenzie Carson (#1), Tristin Fleck (#2), Katie Weinrauch (#3), Lillawhin Lay-Street (#4) Cheyenne Siebert (#5), Madison Stinson (#6), Madison Greenwood (#7), Kayla Grimes (#8), Lainey Dube (#9),

Faith Englot (#10), Kennedi Laub (#11), Brooklyn Stinson (#12), coached by Robin Ulrich and Whitney Czerwonka.

Throughout the day tournament were exciting matches between the senior teams with lots of action and the games were close. Many fans were there to cheer on their team.

Pool standings at the end of the round robin: Pool A: 1st Kipling (2 and 0); 2nd Lampman (1 and 1) and 3rd Redvers (0 and 2).

Pool B: 1st Langenburg (2 and 0); 2nd Balcarres (1 and 1) and 3rd

Semi Finals: Kipling defeats Balcarres 25-10, 25-9; Lampman defeats Langenburg 25-20, 2523.

Championship Game: Kipling defeats Lampman 25-16, 25-23.

“I thought the girls played well from beginning to end and were consistent throughout,” explains coach Garth Shoemaker.

“They played a high level game and their communication and execution was good and passing and defence was good,” adds Shoemaker. “They played together as a complete team.” Shoe-

maker went on to say “Our goal is to advance to provincials...set our sights on finishing in the top 2 or 3 and medal at provincials.”

“We were pleased with how we played this weekend and advancing onto the Regional Championships this weekend

Successful fundraiser for CES

Carlyle Elementary School recently held a very successful fundraiser. Farm to School by Peak Of the Market helped Carlyle and area residents fill their fridges with farm fresh vegetables. In doing so they not only helped raise a total of $1853 towards the new play structure fund, but also helped raise approx 800lbs of fresh produce for the Carlyle Food Bank. Parents helped to sort all the vegetables and distribute to the classrooms. 223 orders were received. Over 3,100 pounds of food was sorted in under two hours.

We will never forget As a Veteran and son of a Veteran, I was impressed to see this. There are at least two in town.

They carried a heavy load Submitted by Linda Aalbers What happened on the home front. For my parents who never got to join the service, they served at home. Dad tried to join the military when his best friend, and class mate Cliff Beatty joined up but Dad was turned away, due to a medical condition, at the age of eight he had contracted polio along with his oldest sister Muriel, the polio left Dad with physical impairment, his ability to hold his head upright for long periods of time as well as a bad back. He would tell us stories of how he and his sister were packed in sand bags to keep their limbs from curving. They endured this for many months. So as a young man Dad was delegated to stay on the farm with his parents Jasper and Grace Fox and worked at helping raise cattle and grain.

Mother, on the other hand, was left at home to be the work force with her father, Joseph Luyten and mother, Sophia Luyten, and her two little brothers, Charles and Louis Luyten and younger brother Andy Luyten. Brother Fred had dies from appendix in 1939. The two older sisters were married and raising families on their own. Mom’s four older brothers signed up to serve and protect the country they had grown to love when the family arrived in Halifax in 1928, and settled north of Manor. Two brothers ended up in Belgium army as they were teens when they left the country of their birth, and two were in the Canadian forces. While her brothers were gone, Mom was the work hand who milked the cows, rode the mower, the rake, hauled water, all the chores that four older brothers had shared prior to leaving for overseas duty; as well as helping her mother with

cooking, cleaning and looking after the younger siblings. There was no tractors, just heavy horses, having to harness them and in winter tie them in the barn, as the feed had to hauled to the cattle; as a kid I remember my mother harnessing the horses to the buggy to take me to school in Manor; the sleigh ride in the winter, just as she did for her three brothers, only they went to Moose Mountain School during the war years.

My parents were not the only ones who could not serve, most families rural and urban had the younger ones helping out at home for those who didn’t.

Neighbours stepped in to help out, they worked hard on the home front as the labour was all hand labour, as that was all there was to work with, horses and implements to toil with. Harvest was neighbour helping neighbour with up to 9 -15 men at the table, twice a day plus coffee at 10am and lunch in the field

at 3 p.m., so man and beast could have a rest!

The Luyten brothers all returned home after the war. Many farm families faced the same hardships during the war and the workload was shared by young and old. Could those at home today survive the hardship they endured, waiting and praying for their loved ones to return to the quiet life of home and country.

My parents brought me to same section I live on today at the age of seven (7) days old. Their lives were busy and full as community workers and enjoyed the freedom that so many fought and worked for during those years, that kept the country they loved free for all of us.

Sterling Fox and Maria Luyten married in Manor on October 19, 1944 and raided a family of five children, the eldest Linda Aalbers is the author of this tribute to those on the home front.

Death over Drinks

Unless you know something I don’t know, dying is not optional. Many of us think about dying only in vague, out there, down-the-road kinds of ways, hoping it will happen sometime later, perhaps after a brief illness, at home, without pain, surrounded by loving friends and family.

Unfortunately, most of us don’t die that way.

There is no doubt the process of dying can be frightening. And fear often causes us to avoid doing things or taking action. We don’t like to think about death. We don’t teach our children about it. And we certainly don’t like to talk about it.

Conversations about death and dying can be difficult. Let’s change that.

Let’s open up these difficult conversations so everyone can join in and be part of them.

Having recently attended the International Death Symposium in Toronto, there is much new information to share. To that end, Phenix Counselling Services will be hosting weekly meetings to discuss several topics surrounding death and dying, including: Dispelling some of the myths of death and dying; Do you need a M.A.I.D.?; Health care directives; What the heck is a death doulah?; Got a will? Here’s a way to write one; Who’s your proxy?; Grief and mourning are not the same thing; Help for the holidays and other special anniversaries.

I remember as a student in a Russian-German community how we sang songs about allied Polish soldiers. A beautiful young housewife weeps all day in her beautiful home, waiting for her soldier to return.

“Do not weep,” the song echoes.

We experienced Remembrance at the cultural level where we became aware of nations and politics and suffering. Twenty some million Russians died in World War II, seven million were civilians.

Always we remembered and prayed for the soldiers and read

Maccabees, where offerings were made for dead warriors. We understood the Communion of Saints and how we on earth help pray for those in Purgatory. “No greater love has a person than to lay down your life for others.”

Remembrance was with me through thirtyfive years as a teacher organizing programs and bringing in veterans to share their stories. Military fly-bys and Cadet marches in the cold November from cenotaph to church for prayer, scripture and more stories to share.

sential. Studying history may help us avoid its pitfalls. Remembering fills us with gratitude. Gratitude for the heroes who gave their lives so that we have the freedom to congregate and remember.

“Flanders Field” refreshes our memory each year. The droning of planes and the crackle of jets, and the red poppies, touch our senses as flowers and tears remind us of our loss of loved ones in the theater of war.

And war does go on.

That is why we remember the wars of our new century: Congo, Syria, Darfur, Iraq, Afghanistan, Boko Haram, Yemen and Ukraine. Remembrance demands the will to educate, the will to change and the will to pray.

Will our grandchildren remember the holocaust? Viet Nam? Korea? Do they need to hear about Canada’s part in the Boer War? The World Wars? Or more recently Canada’s peace keeping in: Afghanistan, Kosova, Bosnia, Sierre Leone, South Africa and Central America among others.

There is much to remember! That is why we meet with our veterans to share soup, sandwiches and stories. That is why we ponder in silence and pray aloud.

LEST WE FORGET! Lord we pray for peace-makers and peace-keepers who help keep the world secure; we pray for political, military and religious men and women who have the privilege of leadership; and we pray for our neighbours and ourselves in the one human family.

Amen.

RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons So I know my brother is a hero, well that is what he keeps telling me and others. You see he is a Firefighter, or in his words, he puts out fires and saves lives. He tells everyone his brother is a Police Officer and his brother gives out tickets and makes people angry.

Well the fact is this can often be the case. It is our job and unfortunately even when we give people warnings they get angry. Such was the case over Halloween when we asked some individuals to stop driving their golf carts. They are not a “Mode of Transportation” and it is not golf season.

Thus we accept that we make people angry, however, it is done in the interest of upholding the law and keeping our communities safe.

Members assisted on a Child Welfare call and on a well being check where we determined an elderly individual was not assaulted, rather they tripped over their purse strap and were too embarrassed to tell a family member what truly happened. We truly do not mind these calls. We would rather determine nothing happened rather than not be told about a possible victim not receiving the care and attention they deserve.

We had a fire in town where someone thought leaving something cooking on the stove would be OK while they left the building. A fire started and although they tried using water to put out the fire things did not get worse. Remember water and oil or grease do not mix.

We acted as “Peace Keepers” or was it “Peace Makers” as it relates to who can or can not reside in a house in the Carlyle area. We managed to avoid anyone acquiring Criminal Charges during this incident.

We dealt with an

apparent family dispute over possession of a motor vehicle. The one with possession of the vehicle apparently did not have a licence. We did what we do and somewhat resolved the situation.

We are investigating the theft of a quad in the Kenosee area.

Several thousand dollars worth of fence panels were stolen from a well site.

We are investigating the theft of batteries from a shop in the area.

We had a report of several items stolen out of an “unlocked” vehicle. The Criminals will continue to break the law but please make it harder for them to steal things.

Members of the Combined Traffic Unit and Carlyle RCMP conducted a search warrant for drugs. Several exhibits were seized and sent for analysis. Once the results are obtained charges will be determined.

We are investigating a complaint where one individual is sharing intimate video’s of another individual. This is a crime and we are treating it seriously.

We have two new investigations involving individuals who have chosen not to comply with their release conditions. Charges are forthcoming on both.

Members responded to two false alarms over the last week. One in Carlyle and another in the Carlyle area.

We have opened an intimidation investigation where an accused is putting pressure on the victim not to cooperate with the Court Process.

This is not taken lightly by the Police or the Court system.

We assisted EMS with a call. I don’t think we go a week where we don’t work with our local EMS and Fire Departments. We have a great working relationship.

If you have company credit cards please make sure you monitor their use on a regular basis, the same should be done if you have a personal credit card. The RCMP in Quebec recently fell victim to one of their fuel cards being cloned and

$104,555.00 in purchases were obtained, mostly gas. The Credit Card company will absorb $14,555 and the RCMP hopes to recover another $9,930.00. If you do not monitor the Credit Card use regularly don’t expect to get all your money back.

The focus this month as it relates to Traffic Safety is suspended drivers.

We have had a couple of “Road Rage” incidents reported over the last few weeks. Charges that could arise out of these investigations could include Dangerous Driving under the Criminal Code, Careless driving or many other offences under the Provincial Statues.

We had a report of someone operating a motor vehicle without a “Blow Box” We located the vehicle, however, it was not the driver the complainant thought was operating. Even though we did not find who we thought we would find we still appreciate these calls.

We had a further report of an erratic driver on Highway 13 near Manor. We had a car in the area and made an immediate patrol but did not locate the vehicle.

Members responded to a report of an impaired driver and found it parked. Although we could not identify and charge the driver we did issue a $360.00 ticket for open liquor.

We had 2 other impaired driving investigations. Both are on going being we have had information in relation to individuals that often

drive impaired. We will continue to watch and look for these individuals.

We caught a youth with open liquor and he now has to deal with a $360 fine.

We had four individuals that were dealt with for not having insurance.

Three received a $580 fine. Three individuals received $230 fines for failing to stop at a stop sign.

The most expensive speeding tickets over the last week were $206 and $208.

Five individuals were dealt with for failing to use their seatbelts.

That is a $175 fine.

One individual received a $125 ticket for fail to move to the right when approached by an emergency vehicle. Personally I pull over to the side of the road and begin to slow down to come to a stop, regardless if the “Emergency Vehicle” is coming toward me, or coming from behind me.

That is the law. I also put my 4 way flashers on to show that I am aware of the “Emergency Vehicle” One individual received a $100 fine for causing unnecessary noise with a motor vehicle. They also got a $205 ticket for drive at a speed that is greater than reasonable and safe.

Cell phone tickets of $280 were issued......just put it down, pull over or ignore it. Most of us survived before without a cell phone.

One individual chose to pass a slower vehicle on main street. Tried to lie about it, and well we have video. Tickets will be issued to the driver

once the Member locates him again.

Ford may not be a great Moe ally

When you think about it, the Saskatchewan Party should be “Standing up for Saskatchewan”.

After all, the reason for their very existence is pretty much spelled out in their name.

Of course, the NDP have always taken umbrage with the fact that the conservative-based party chose to title itself after the province.

But this is a rather conservative province . . . or at least, it’s been more conservative than not.

Since the 20-year, post-Depression, post-Second-World War run of Tommy Douglas’s CCF, a different political party for a different era, ended in 1964, Saskatchewan has seen more days with non-NDP governments than with NDP governments.

And should current opinion polls showing the Sask. Party substantially ahead hold up until the 2020 vote, the Sask. Party will have a run of majority governments in Saskatchewan only exceeded by the Douglas government.

Moreover, it’s now been 30 years since Saskatchewan has sent a majority of NDP MPs to Ottawa. Since 2000, this province has only elected three NDP MPs. Standing up for Saskatchewan and it’s rather conservative outlook should be a natural thing for Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe. So one can only wonder why Moe feels the need to stand up for Saskatchewan alongside Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

Admittedly, one would normally expect the Saskatchewan Premier to seek out political allies, especially given that this province was standing alone in its opposition to the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax for a considerable time.

As Moe pointed out after returning from his second press conference with Ford in two weeks, Ford was elected with a solid majority earlier this year to fight the carbon tax.

But there’s another of way of looking at this, especially in the context of what’s worked well for the Sask. Party in its long run in office and what it needs to avoid.

As you well know, the Sask. Party was formed as a coalition of Progressive Conservatives, Reformers and Liberals as a means of ending the vote split by parties in Saskatchewan right of the NDP. (Really, old Liberals and Progressive Conservatives splitting the vote in this province was the biggest reason why the runs of the CCF-NDP Douglas, Allan Blakeney and Roy Romanow-Lorne Calvert governments were extended as long as they were.)

As such, it would seem advisable for the Sask.

Party to stay on that coalition track and focus on its successful Saskatchewan-first approach.

That clearly worked well in former premier Brad Wall’s 2010 national campaign that lobbied the Conservative government stop the BHP Billiton takeover of PotashCorp.

Certainly, one can argue that Moe is still doing the same thing in his “Standing up for Saskatchewan” campaign, the theme of the throne speech that was all about the carbon tax fight.

But if you are making a solid argument that this carbon tax fight is all about what’s good for Saskatchewan people and not just a political fight with Trudeau to the benefit Andrew Scheer’s federal Conservatives, there is a better way to go about than simply aligning yourself with Doug Ford.

While Ford did defeat what seemed to be a very bad Ontario Liberal government under Kathleen Wynne, he also came to office with substantial political baggage of his own.

And Moe’s strategist might also be a little wary of attaching the Sask. Party to a new Ontario government already running into its fair share of problems because of controversial policies.

Maybe it can be argued that Moe can’t fight this carbon tax alone.

But recruiting economists and even environmentalist (some of who say the carbon tax won’t work) would be more productive for Moe. Opposition to the carbon tax has to be about what’s good for Saskatchewan, not what’s good for conservatives.

To us from them, the torch is thrown Last March the federal government tested new ad campaigns for Remembrance Day. Focus groups in four cities were asked to comment on the content, tone and feeling the ads evoked, and based on their input one of the campaigns was chosen to be the centrepiece for 2018 commemorations.

One of the ads had scenes of My Outlook people placing poppies on a cenoShelley Luedtke taph while in the background a verse from “In Flanders Fields” was read. The consulting firm running the focus groups indicated that while some said the ad packed an emotional wallop “at least half the participants in the English sessions did not recognize ‘In Flanders Fields’, nor did any of the Montreal participants.”

I can recall the first time I remember hearing Canadian John McCrae’s famous poem. I’d likely heard it at services prior but it stood out for me as a grade 3 student at Central School in Swift Current. My family had recently moved from Alberta so this was my first Remembrance Day service at a new school.

As I walked with my classmates into the gym my eyes quickly focussed on the front of the room.

A white cross sat centre stage. At its base were two rifles, a helmet and a gas mask. I likely had little understanding of what those things represented but if I was given those items today I could re-create that scene down to the finest detail because I remember it so clearly. It was grim--so stark in its reality. Of course I wouldn’t have described it in those terms as an 8-year old child but I remember feeling chilled by it.

The service proceeded with singing, readings, a moment of silence, and a recitation of “In Flander’s Fields” by the grade four class. The following year, as a grade 4 student myself, I stood on that stage with my classmates as it was our turn to recite the poem.

Our position put us up close and personal with the same items that were there the year before; rifles, a helmet and a gas mask. Had someone found breath in that mask that now sat mere inches from my small feet? Had that helmet protected a soldier from inju-

ry? Those thoughts were interrupted by the motion of our teacher indicating it was time for us to recite McCrae’s work.

John McCrae was a doctor and teacher who was described as a man of high principles and strong spiritual values. While training as a doctor he also wrote stories and poems and was published in a variety of magazines.

When the South African War started in 1899 McCrae felt it his duty to go. After serving with his unit for one year he returned to Canada and resumed his work and studies in pathology. In 1914 McCrae was among the 45,000 who signed up within three weeks after Britain declared war on Germany. He was a medical officer with the First Brigade of the Canadian Field Artillery and he treated hundreds of wounded soldiers. Tragically, far too many were dying, including a close friend. The day after his friend was killed he sat down and poured his heart out in a poem, giving voice to the fallen. The poem was published in 1915. It has been translated into many languages and is part of Remembrance Day services not only in Canada but in countries throughout the world.

I was a student at Central School through grade 7 so I listened to three subsequent grade four classes share the poem, all the while saying the words along in my head. We had been taught so well the words were still there. Still are.

On November 11 we are urged to remember.

But for those of us who haven’t experienced war, we need to learn before we can remember. We need to take the time to hear the stories, read the accounts, and listen to those who know. When we learn--we know. What we know--we can remember.

To the teachers, parents, grandparents, veterans organizations and all others who strive to help us live out ‘lest we forget’ we say thank you. You have set us on a path of understanding, exploring and trying to grasp what it meant…and what it means.

We may not all be required to memorize a particular poem but we need to ensure we grasp what the poetry, music, stories and remembrances attempt to convey. Lest we forget…lest we stop learning.

That’s my outlook.

Greek, plain, drinkable, light — with so many options at the grocery store, how do you choose the very best yogurt? Here are five things to consider.

1. Ingredients. Yogurt is made of milk and active bacterial cultures. However, gelatin, colouring and artificial sweeteners are sometimes added.

Look for the shortest ingredient list.

2. Calories. The number of calories shouldn’t exceed the number of grams in the package.

3. Fat. Opt for yogurt with zero to two per cent fat content.

4. Sugar. Choose products with no more than 15 to 20 grams of sugar per 175 gram

serving. Flavoured yogurt usually contains a lot of sugar.

Your best bet is to buy a plain variety and liven it up to your liking (with fruit and honey, for instance).

5. Calcium. Choose a yogurt that provides at least 15 per cent of the daily recommended intake of calcium in a single serving.

Cougars suffer OT loss in season home opener

Submitted by Nicole Currie The PureChem Cougars headed back onto the ice to start off the 2018-19 season on Friday, Nov. 2, playing host to the Midale Mustangs. Over 260 fans were in attendance with a 50/50 totalling $491!

The Cougars have had tremendous support from the community since getting back into the league three years ago.

A Cougar opportunity happened shortly into the game, as Brent McLean tried to bury one on Carlyle’s only CMP Power Play. Midale got on the board first with a goal at 12:22 from Burk, assisted

by Kolke. Two of Carlyle’s rookies quickly replied with a goal from Mason Belanger and the assist going to Mitchell Morrison. With under 5 minutes left to play in the first, Ben Johnstone netted one with the assist going to Nathan Deck.

Things got a little physical in front of Carlyle’s goalie, Landon Audet, in the beginning of the second as things heated up. Both teams worked hard all period with action happening at both ends of the ice. Again, with under 5 minutes left in the period, Carlyle looked to make it 3-1 when Captain Ben Johnstone scored his second of the night from Zach Brown and Nathan Deck.

Midale took advantage of their two power plays in the third period, scoring on both. Van De Sype scored less than 3 minutes into the third with assists from Tomiski and Kmita. Tomiski and Kmita were huge for Midale in the third, as they also assisted Garrett Sherlock’s goal halfway through the third.

The third ended in a 3-3 tie and it’s off to OT. Just over 1 minute into over-time, Midale’s Tomiski, with his 3rd point of the night, scored to give Midale the win. Great game played by both teams.

Atom Cougars start season on winning note Danielle Benjamin Sports Contributor Well our Carlyle Atom Cougars season has officially begun! After a few practices in October as well as the Carlyle PureChem Cougars

hockey school, our team is looking ready for a great 2018-2019 season.

We have a big team with 15 players and practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00 pm at the Carlyle Sports Arena. This year we are coached by Steve Kostal and Manager Natalie

Miller, with a few assistant coaches; Cody Thul, Tony Faber, Danny Kachur. Thank you all for stepping up to help this team.

On Nov. 3 we had our first home game against Kipling and had our first victory, 11-4.

Next game was

on the road against Alameda/Bienfait in Bienfait on Nov. 4, where we had our first loss, 142.

Next game action will be on Nov. 9 and 10 when the Atom Cougars play in Carievale’s home tournament. Good luck team!

Pee Wee Cougars look foward to exciting year on the ice

A good crowd was on hand at the Carlyle Sports Arena on Nov. 2 when the visiting Midale Mustangs and the hometown PureChem Cougars battled it out in the 2018-19 season home opener.

Danielle Benjamin Sports Contributor We have an exciting year planned for the Carlyle Peewee Cougars coached by Kirk Himmelspach and assistant coach Jason Dixon. We have 16 players this year with a mix of first and second year players.

We got the team together early for a 4 on 4 tournament in Moosomin on Oct. 14 where they played four fastpaced games.

Then the team participated in the Carlyle PureChem Cougars hockey school held at the Carlyle Sports Arena;

big thank you to all that helped put that on!

We had some practices and will continue to practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:15 pm.

We had a home and home series with the Estevan Wolves; in Estevan on Oct. 20, where we won 9-5, and then they came to Carlyle on Oct. 21 and we lost 4-12.

Many of our players participated in a threehour body checking clinic on Oct. 24, put on by Jeff Cole.

We also hosted a 3 on 3 tournament in Carlyle on Oct. 28. We

had fun and the first year Peewee kids can be proud that they beat our team 2, which consisted of the second year peewee players- all in good fun!

Our season opener was held on Nov. 3 in Carlyle against Redvers and we won 10-2. Our first road game was Nov. 4 in Kipling where we won 7-6! Great job team!

Next peewee action will be at home on Nov. 10 at 2:30 pm against Carievale at the Carlyle Sports Arena.

Come on out and support your team and enjoy a snack at the rink!

We will never forget Remembrance Day service in Carlyle

The Remembrance Day Service in Carlyle will be held on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 10:45 a.m. at the Carlyle Elementary School gym, where wreaths will be laid. Rev. Ross of the Carlyle United Church will be conducting the service. Following the service the colour party will march to the Cenotaph for a short service. Later in the afternoon church bells will ring 100 times in honour of 100 Years of Remembrance (see article below).

One hundred years of Remembrance Submitted by Doug Waldner On November 11, 2018, 100 years will have passed since the signing of the armistice that of�icially ended WW1. The “war to end all wars” left an indelible impression on Canada.

Some 619,636 Canadians enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the war, and approximately 424,000 served overseas. Close to 66,000 Canadians were killed during the war and another 172,000 were wounded. Many more returned home broken in mind and body. The Dominion of Newfoundland suffered 1,305 killed and several thousand wounded. Of the more than 172,000 Canadians who reported wounds during the war, medical authorities classi�ied approximately 138,000 as battle casualties. Of the wounded who sur-

vived, 3,461 men and one woman had a limb amputated. No reliable method existed for tracking or treating psychological casualties, but authorities identi�ied over 9,000 Canadians as suffering from “Shell Shock”.

This was an enormous contribution from a population of just under 8 million in 1914.

Approximately seven percent of the total population of Canada was in uniform at some point during the war, and hundreds of thousands of additional Canadians worked on the home front in support of the war.

If you were to extrapolate from the numbers listed above, it could be claimed that the majority of the population in Canada at that time was touched in some capacity by the war. Further to this you could also state that there were at least

425,000 families that were intimately affected as their loved ones face the brunt of the tragedy of war.

As a tribute to all Canadians who served in this horri�ic struggle, the Royal Canadian Legion is promoting an event that allows Canadians, if only for a moment, to stop, to remember, and to feel, perhaps for a second, the joy that peace brought after so much death and destruction.

Bells call us to wake, to pray, to work, to arms, to feast and, in times of crisis, to come together.

“On November 11, 1918, the ringing of church bells erupted spontaneously across the country, as an outpouring of relief that four years of war had come to an end.”

The Bells of Peace Initiative by the Royal Canadian Legion is designed to emulate that moment

of remembrance in honour of our veterans who served in WW1.

On November 11, 2018 at sunset (5:11 PM, sunset in Carlyle) 100 bells will ring from the Carlyle United Church, followed by Amazing Grace.

World War 1 Memories Submitted by Doug Waldner It is approaching 100 years since peace was declared at the end of World War 1. Although from our perpective, a century seems a very long time, the distance is not as great as it may seem. The original Carlyle History Book, Prairie Trails to Blacktop, was compiled in the early 1980s. At that time, there were still 5 veterans of that war living in Carlyle. Mr. Eric Redman, Mr. Jack Rutherford, Mr. Rusty Kerr, Mr. Wm. Eisler and Mr. Jack Morrison were identi�ied in Carlyle as links to that struggle. To younger people, even the 1980s are ancient history, but there are many in town that will remember these gentlemen. Mr. Morrison told his memories of his experience in World War 1.

As the honouring of the Armistice on November 11, 1918 is approaching, it is felt that Mr. Jack Morrison’s story is worthy of retelling. It is below.

World War 1 As told by Jack Morrison “I was farming north of Balcarres in 1914 when the war broke out. Early in the spring of 1915, after seeding was completed I enlistedd in Regina with the C.M.R. Our beds were the cement seats in the hockey stadium. If you turned over, you landed on the top of the fellow below. We were then moved to Camp Shilo for training. While there snow came and we were moved into Portage la Prairie. Eric Redman was there with us. He enlisted in Regina. From there the 10th C.M.R. ceased to be a unit. Some went to the engineers, some to infantry, and we were picked as a squadron and sent over to our Canadian 3rd division 1915 at Christmas. As we were leaving it was so cold and stormy that the band could not play for our send off

at the station. George Robinson of Broadview was our Captain. We landed at Somerset Barracks, England, and trained there for two months – mounted, dismounted and machine training. We were shipped to France early in March 1916, to the Ypres front where we were for two months, then off to the Somme where a big offensive opened up. Our three divisions were all at Brick�ield Camp at the same time. There we were made into a cavalry regiment named Canadian Light Horse from the �irst , second and third divisions. We moved up the Sunken Road and into the Regina trench, there the Fourth Division landed and joined us. Mustard gas was �irst used and they were badly gassed.

We had to do stretcher bearing for several days to get the wounded out. We were there till the �irst of December when we were moved to Devionne about 10 kilometres behind the Vimy. Here I was con�irmed Sergeant, picked by the men of the squadron. We had Christmas dinner there. That winter we went up to the front in ten-day shifts and dug craters under enemy lines, getting ready for the big push. While there, we were billeted in Ritz Cave. There were supposed to be 60,000 Frenchmen buried from a former battle.

The cave was over 70 feet deep in white, wet chalk rock. The whole cave was polluted with rats. April 9, the big push was on and we went in as a Canadian unit and lost a large number of men. The Germans moved out after being pushed back They had been there two years. We were at Passchendale a short time on the way to Mons. While at Passchendale, I was out on sacfri�ice patrol, eight men and myself to �ind out the enemy machine gun strong points. While dismounted cutting wire, my horse was shot, and I had to leave him there. Only two or three of my men were left. I sent

Over 7,000 Indigenous Peoples in Canada served in the First and Second World Wars. Of the many who distinguished themselves during their service, here are three that stand out.

1. Tommy Prince Earning 11 medals in World War II and the Korean War, Tommy Prince of the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation

is the most decorated Indigenous Canadian war veteran. He’s renowned for his marksmanship and covert abilities, skills he learned on the reserve from his father who was a hunter and a trapper. Among Prince’s numerous celebrated exploits was locating an enemy camp during a 72-hour trek without food or water, an action that led to the capture of more than 1,000 German soldiers.

2. Charles Tompkins Charles Tompkins was one of many Indigenous “code talkers” working for the Allies in World War II. A Métis who spoke �luent Cree, Tompkins was in charge of transmitting vital messages using a Cree code he helped develop. The practice involved one code talker translating a message into Cree and transmitting it by radio to a second code talker who would then translate the message back into English. This allowed the allies to share integral information with each other without exposing it to potential radio eavesdroppers.

3. Edith Anderson Monture A Mohawk from the Six Nations Grand River Reserve, Edith Anderson Monture was one of 14 Canadian nurses who served as part of the United States Army Nurse Corps in World War I. She worked at a hospital in France, treating soldiers injured in trench warfare and gas attacks. After the war, she became the �irst Indigenous woman to become a registered nurse in Canada.

them back with the report and I went back on foot. I then got my �irst leave in eighteen months and went home to England. I took a course in mounting and dismounting training. They wanted me to stay and train, but I wanted back to my old unit. Our adjuutant got me back and I joined them on the way to Mons.

We were on the front line when the armistice was signed on November 11, 1918. The Germans were on one side of the river and we faced them on the other side. We met and shook hands. We gathered in the city of Mons that day to make plans and organize for �irst troops of occupation and I happened to be picked with four other men to go ahead and select billets for the troops coming in in four days. After three days march, we stopped at Herschel on the Rhine. Shortly after the whole unit was moved to Gettesberg where we were for nine weeks. We had Christmas dinner at the beautiful Kaiserdort Hotel over the Rhine. In early spring of 1919, I arrived home to Balcarres in time for seeding.”

In his experience in World War 1, Mr. Morrison was at Ypres, the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passenchdale, and shook hands with German opponents after the Armistice was signed. Although his telling seems to have a “matter of fact” tone, the signi�icance of each of these battles, and battle�ields is enormous to Canadian history.

Although Mr. Morrison and all his comrades have passed on the the 100 years since the Armistice that ended World War 1, we wish to honour his service, and all those who served Canada in World War 1 and all others who served in war and in peace by ringing the Bells of Peace at sundown on November 11, 2018.

Second World War Veteran reflects on War Amps 100 Years of “Amputees Helping Amputees”

On November 11, Second World War veteran Charlie Jefferson will not only be thinking of all those who have served and continue to serve on behalf of Canada, he will also be re�lecting on the 100th anniversary of The War Amps, an organization which has supported him and generations of amputees.

In March 1945, Jefferson was serving as a Lieutenant with the Queen’s Own Ri�les Regiment in the Rhine Valley, Germany. He was injured by an anti-personnel mine explosion, resulting in the loss of his left leg below the knee. When he returned to Canada, he was greeted by a war amputee veteran who reassured him that living with an amputation would not be a barrier to a successful life and that The War Amps would be there to support him.

The War Amps was started in 1918 by amputee veterans returning from the First World War to help each other in adapting to their new reality as amputees. They then welcomed amputee veterans following the Second World War, like

Jefferson, sharing all that they had learned, as well as starting the Key Tag Service to allow these new members to gain meaningful employment and provide a service to the public.

Jefferson says that he gained practical advice from fellow amputee veterans, like how to protect the skin on his stump from blisters. He adds that the moral support he received was just as important because it made him feel like he was not alone. “It became easier to accept your amputation and helped make the most of what you’ve got left,” says Jefferson.

Over the years, he “paid it forward” by visiting new amputees in hospitals and at their homes to provide the same guidance that he had been given. “I would tell them what success I had and what was working for me, so there was a comradery and information transfer,” he says.

This peer support was then passed on to a new generation. In 1975, war amputee veterans recognized that their knowledge and expe-

rience could help others so they started The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which provides �inancial assistance for the cost of arti�icial limbs and regional seminars to young amputees.

Rob Larman, Director of The War Amps PLAYSAFE/DRIVESAFE Program, lost his right leg in a train accident at the age of 14 and grew up with the CHAMP Program. “On Remembrance Day, I think of the incredible legacy these First and Second World War ‘amps’, like Mr. Jefferson, have created for all amputees in this country,” says Larman. “I’m proud to, in turn, help the younger amputees who have come after me.”

When war amputee veterans started The War Amps, they could not have predicted that their founding principle of “amputees helping amputees” would still be going strong 100 years later. Thanks to the public’s continuing support of the Key Tag Service, The War Amps vital programs for amputees across Canada will carry on long into its second century.

Their Country Needed Them, They Answered the Call.

Betty-Jo DeJong (Lashburn, SK) visited with her parents Bob and Cecille Harrison from Oct. 25-30. She took in the activities at the Haunted House, the Wrecks Dance and the Alida Bingo.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Grey and Donna Cowan on the sudden death of their sonin-law Don Happy of Good Spirit, SK. Don passed away Oct. 27 at the age of 57 years. Funeral service was November 5 with interment at Yorkton Memorial Gardens. Condolences are also extended to his wife Marie, daughter Cristal (Ed) Ockochinski and grandchildren Leland and Emma, as well as all other family members.

Sincere sympathy is also extended to the Staples families and friends of the death of Rennie Staples who passed away Oct. 27 at the age of 55 years. His memorial service was held November 3 at the Oxbow Friendship Centre.

Guests who came to visited with Shelly, Tim and Ainsley Cowan on Oct. 28 were Shelly’s mom Orlys Nilsen, sister Diane Sauter, niece Tanelle Kruse and her sons Ashton and Parker (all of Minot), daughters Lacie Nilsen and Kelsey Rydberg and Steven Wilson (all of Estevan). They also came and took in the Haunted House and Fun Fair.

Gray, Edel and John Cowan attended the Redvers Foul Supper on Oct. 28. Great delicious food as always – keep up the good work. They also visited with Joyce and Jackie George. On Oct. 31 John Cowan left for his home back at Hillcrest Mines, AB after spending about two weeks holidaying at the Cowan farm.

Oct. 31 was the last day that the doors of our Haunted House were opened with a few spooks returning to find their secret spots within the halls of the house. At about 7:00 trick and treaters began arriving at the rink and they were excellently dressed for the occasion and received leftover treats from the Fun fair, which was waiting for

them. Thank goodness the weatherman co-operated with no wet snow, just a cool but nice evening.

About 30 minutes later visitors began to arrive to venture through the haunted house. There were 64 guests who arrived throughout the evening; among these were Bantam hockey players and their coaches from Carnduff. Approximately 500 guests visited our Haunted House throughout the six days of operations, and of course the fun fair was also well attended. This proved to be a very successful event which brought in over $7000.00 for the Alida Rec. Board. Much appreciation goes out to everyone – organizers, workers, spooks (both from near and far), visitors, participants – without them all the event would not be such a success.

The Alida community extends sincere sympathy to the Huynh and Erickson families on the accidental death of Jim Huynh on Nov. 1 the age of 39 years on at his farm home near Redvers.. The Huynh family lived near Alida for a few years before moving to the Redvers area. Celebration of Jim’s life was held Nov. 6 at Redvers R.C. Church with internment at Wauchope R.C. Parsh Cemetery.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Marguerite Boutin and family on the death of her husband Romeo who passed away, at the age of 90 years on Nov. 3 at the Redvers Health Centre. Romeo farmed for many years in the Alida area with his sons Denis and Gille. In 1996 he and Marguerite moved to Redvers and they enjoyed travelling, dancing and playing cards. Funeral mass was held Nov. 10 in Redvers R.C. Church. He will later be interred in a family ceremony at the Cantal Parish Cemetery. Condolences are also extended to all family members as well.

at the Cowan farm (Nov. 2) visiting his dad and grandparents.

On Nov. 4 the Alida annual Fall Supper was held. Despite the weather there was a good crowd of approximately 200 guests that attended. There was lots of delicious food as always – keep up the good work gals and guys.

I do believe that winter is finally arriving now – we had a lite snowfall last week, but thankfully most of that snow disappeared. Now Monday (5th) morning we are receiving more snow, now I’ll bet you anything this snow is here to stay, oh well guess one must accept the changing of seasons even if one wishes it would somehow miss winter. However there are some advantages to the winter season as well, so guess we just have to grin and bear it – and before we know it December will be. Hubby was finally able to get all the potatoes and carrots dug up and stored. Unfortunately we lost some potatoes to frost, boy of boy do those frozen potatoes ever smell when they thaw but hopefully we’ve found most of them and that they’re not in the winter storage bin (however time will tell).

Remembrance Day – Nov. 11 is on Sunday – please take time out to remember those who gave the supreme sacrifice for our freedom and also give thanks to our Armed Forces and all those who are continuing peace keeping. Wear your poppy proudly – Least we Forget!

It’s an early deadline coming up on Nov. 8 due to Remembrance Day long weekend, then will be back on schedule on Monday, 19. Sympathy to family and friends of Mary Hartlin who passed away on October 24th at the age of 100 years!

Her funeral service was held in Maryfield. Many remember when Mary taught school in Wawota in the late 1960’s.

The Haunted House that was set up at the Wawota Hotel and open to the public on the weekend before October 31st was very well attended. Around 500 people enjoyed this event. It was a great fundraiser for the Playground Committee. It is a popular event and well thought out fund

raiser... having a kid’s time and the fact that there aren’t many haunted houses set up in this area make it profitable.

Congratulations to Chimo on their 40th anniversary last week!

They served a delicious meal to close to a hundred appreciative customers on Tuesday, October 30th. Several prizes were drawn for. Chimo has recently opened a new business in Carlyle. Wawota appreciates Chimo’s business practices and service throughout the years.

nual Wawota United Church’s fall supper. A large crowd enjoyed the meal and many out of towners were in attendance. The weather man was very co-operative, also.

The Wawota Drop In Centre was the site of time of remembering the late Catherine Peddle who passed away earlier in the year at Port Alberni, BC. Lunch and refreshments were served and many family members were present.

I enjoyed visiting with the grandchildren who made the effort to attend.

It tld of Harvest in Saskatchewan in the days before combines. One tractor pulled a binder, with a second man on it to trip the bundles.

Another small tractor pulled a rack, with two lads forking the sheaves onto it. There was a dramatic moment when the boss attached the huge belt from a steam engine to the threshing machine and the teamsters began to pitch bundles into the feeder. A high wagonbox took the oats, and the blower sent out the straw, watched by a crowd of neighbours.

Those were the days!
