The production crew of two, arrives with a fully loaded Chevy Colorado truck packed full. It has all the costumes, scripts and props. The only element missing is the cast to stage the show.

Approximately 50 students audition and a cast is selected and prepared for an appropriate role.

From Front page - Missoula Children’s Theatre They are both university graduates with Payton having a Bachelor of Science from North Western University of Louisiana and Taylor has a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Acting from Brenau University in Georgia. They both auditioned for “tour actor directors” with the theatre company upon graduation this spring and are now based out of Missoula.

They are on the road continuously and have nicknamed their truck “Connie Bean”. This trip includes stops in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Montana. They traveled here from Wolf Point, Montana and their next stop will be Scobey, Montana.

They explain the theatre company’s purpose is to grow confidence in youth and create a community bond. It benefits the youth; teaching responsibility and creating opportunity for the future.

During the week they put on four workshops for all students. This, as well as readying the cast, teach them their lines, the songs and dance moves for the musical.

Melanie Pauls is the community education liason for the school. She notes, “In this five-day residency the students come together to perform a 60-minute musical production for the community.

This is a program that brings together students from a wide range of demographics. It is a great opportunity to participate and learn about the performing arts.”

The event is generously sponsored by Carlyle Pharmasave. The Ramada Hotel is supplying the accommodation for the Missoula team.

Pauls also comments, “It has been a very intense week of rehearsal schedules and I am very proud of our students for their dedication and commitment to this production”.

The show was held Friday, Nov. 1 at the elementary school gym.

Moe, Sask. Party best when leading with optimism

By Murray Mandryk The Saskatchewan Legislature is sitting again and one wouldn’t necessarily think the politicians returning to the place where they’re the most political would be welcomed.

But after a federal election that produced maddening results for Westerners and a whole lot of uncertainty about what lies ahead, it turns out that an upbeat Speech from the Throne is exactly what we needed.

The Saskatchewan Party government’s new plan contained a call for 200,000 more people and 100,000 more jobs by 2030, aggressive goals that will be tough to attain.

It took Saskatchewan 19 years, from 2000 until now, to create the last 100,000 jobs added to our workforce.

That period included the boom between 2007 and 2011, which is rather telling. While are always years when we add 10,000+ jobs to the work force, there are also bust years when we lose jobs. It’s always two steps forward, one step back.

Similarly, adding another 225,538 people to Saskatchewan to get to 1.4 million (we are now at 1,174,462 people) by 2030 will be exceedingly tough.

Yes, the province did meet the Sask. Party’s initial 2007 goal of growing the province by 100,000 people in its first decade in office. In fact, it met that target in less than half time.

However, that was during the record resource boom from 2007 to 2001. It seems unlikely that kind of boom again any time soon.

But the issue isn’t meeting ambitious goals: It’s having the courage to make them in the first place.

That’s something that not all governments are willing to do.

Moreover, the intangible side effect of all this is itt affords the province a little optimism and faith in in itself.

And having a little optimism seems to be exactly what we could all use after a miserable election campaign that has resulted in a minority Liberal government that’s now frustrating so many.

That minority government has no Liberal representation in Alberta or Saskatchewan to serve at the cabinet table, but, as Premier Scott Moe put it, the problem is bigger than that.

It isn’t so much who is in the next Liberal minority government cabinet, but “what that cabinet actually does,” Moe said.

There is legitimacy to Moe’s frustrations about pipelines and the carbon tax and added fear that a Justin Trudeau minority federal government will not address them.

However, maybe it’s about here where Moe needs to pump the brakes a little … or at least draw on the very same hope and optimism his government demonstrated in its very own throne speech.

So frustrated are people our here with the federal election results that it’s given rise to talk of Saskatchewan and/or Alberta becoming independent … or perhaps joining the United States.

There was a meeting in Lloydminster to explore ways to “deal with the situation Western Canada finds itself in after the election results.”

Obviously, Moe is not lending his support to the #weexit movement that’s had 200,000 hits on its Facebook page.He said his position is that “Saskatchewan should be in a strong and united Canada.”

However, Moe has also stopped short of outright condemning western separation. Instead, he is using the threat posed by this anger and this movement as grounds for a “new deal” within the confederation.

The Saskatchewan Premier needs to be careful here. He needs to understand how this can add fuel to the prairie fire.

Moe is right to point out the frustration and the need for Trudeau to address them.

But a far more effective way to accomplish this is a clear message that this can best accomplish this in stable Canadian federation.

Moe and others need to draw on the optimism in their own throne speech.

It looks like standing in trenches I was in my second year of university when a discussion broke out just prior to class between people who had strong opinions on the events of an upcoming Remembrance Day. It began with a student asking where the nearest Remembrance Day service might be held, and ended with another student seriously questioning those taking part in anything related to the day. Several of us thoroughly Shelley Luedtke disagreed with her position, but not with her right to say it. That’s what freedom looks like.

I had the chance to tour the Parliament buildings in Ottawa on a beautiful April day many years ago. The iconic structure and grounds looked stunning against a vivid spring sky, marred only by the presence of a group of vocal protestors we needed to walk past. I didn’t support the content of their protest, but I supported their right to be there. That’s what freedom looks like.

Attendance at Remembrance Day ceremonies was expected to climb last year, up 10% from the previous year. One reason for an expected increase was the commemoration of 100 years since the end of the First World War. Communities, military bases, city halls and places of worship across our country held bell ringing ceremonies marking the occasion, replicating the bells that rang out across Europe signaling the end of the war.

On a cold day last November 11, I joined with others; witnesses to the poignant Bells of Peace ceremony; remembering those who served and the cost they paid. We stood in silence, listening as the ringing filled the air 100 times. Ten different representatives tolled the bell ten times on this solemn occasion, and as they did, the already uncomfortable temperature seemed to drop. Moments later we were on our way home, shedding the outerwear the cold clung to, and reaching for a blanket or cup of

coffee to warm us up. To get comfortable again. Too comfortable.

Even with the special emphasis last year, still less than 40% of people planned to attend a Remembrance Day event. That is their choice, and of course they may do something else meaningful to mark the day. Or nothing at all. That’s what freedom looks like.

Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms grants us some pretty remarkable things.

We can worship how we wish, or not at all. We can express our beliefs and opinions, or choose to stay quiet. We can gather with those we want and associate how we choose. We can vote; or not. We can discuss public policy. We can criticize our governments. Or support them. That’s what freedom looks like.

Problems arise though, if we don’t understand what these freedoms are worth. If we aren’t diligent; if we aren’t grateful; if we don’t remember; we will see how quickly they are taken for granted, abused and lost.

The Bells of Peace remembrance took less than 15 minutes to observe. Fifteen minutes to mark 100 years of history that has unfolded as a result. History I have benefitted from. The privilege of peace so many in the world do not know.

From the comfort of my warm home I picked up the program we’d been given at the ceremony. In it was the statement, “The ceremony will proceed regardless of the weather. Fifteen minutes standing in the cold is a minor inconvenience, compared to the horror of Canadian soldiers who stood for endless days in the trenches.”

Few of us understand what it took. None of us would have what we have without their resolve. All of us need to remember the cost. If we’re going to do what we do and say what we say using those freedoms as a shield, we better take the time to honor those whose sacrifice made it possible. The view from the trenches must be remembered, because that’s what freedom looks like. That’s my outlook.

Philippine food class dishes up second helping

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Southeast Regional Library will be presenting a cooking class for registrants on Thursday evenings, Nov. 14 and 28, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. It will take place at the Carlyle Memorial Hall.

Rosales Busog and Kristina Villeta will be the host cooks and will be demonstrating how to cook a couple of staple Philippine dishes. They will be cooking pansit, a dish made with noodles and lumpia, which is a spring roll made using pork and vegetables.

The first class was filled and a second night was added, which is also booked.

Rosales and Kristina are volunteering their cooking skills. They are both eager to share the taste of the Philippines with those that registered and there is a good chance they will be doing another demonstration in the new year.

The colours of our world

By Linda Wegner A family member from the prairies recently visited us and it was not only a delightful time together, her constant remarks prompted this week’s article.

“Just look at those colours,” she’d repeat regularly and often. She was right, they were spectacular.

A sky-blue expanse of water (I had to correct her a few times, from our windows we view the Pacific Ocean, not a “big lake”), tree leaves in vibrant yellows, oranges and reds and brilliant sunsets that I too often take for granted. The colours of our world.

Although most definitely more pronounced in the fall months, autumn has its own set of beauty: our grass stays green almost year-round; flowers are continuing to bloom at the time of this writing; and, on those somewhat dreary fall and winter months even overcast skies come in various shades of grey.

All this got me thinking of how we often describe our lives in terms of colours. When we’re sad and downcast we talk about being blue. When embarrassed, our faces are red. Unexpected bad news or even a winter flu bug can leave our faces ashen grey.

Sports teams are associated with the various colours of their uniforms and we expect to see nursing and medical staff in the emergency rooms of our local hospitals in their white or conservatively-coloured uniforms.

Reading through the Old Testament, I couldn’t miss the silver associated with the Tabernacle. Robes placed on Jesus at His death were purple. Heaven is described as having streets of gold while The Psalmist David blesses us by reminding us that our Good Shepherd makes us to lie down in green pastures.

Focusing on Calvary, we are reminded that the death of Christ offers us life-changing colour transformation.

“Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow….” (Isaiah 1:18) Hallelujah!

Pause for Reflection

The Kingdom of God’s loving presence An anthropologist studying the social behavior of the children of an African tribe proposed a game.

He put a fruit basket underneath a tree and said whoever reached the basket first could have all the fruit.

When he said, “Go,” the children joined hands and reaching the basket, sat down in a big circle and shared the fruits. The anthropologist asked why they did not try to get the prize for themselves. They replied, “Ubuntu, how can one of us be happy if all the others are sad?”

As Christians we are all members of one body that is Christ on earth. True, we are still growing and becoming that part of Christ, but we must daily realize our role in making that Kingdom come. How can any one of us be happy if all the others are sad?

Archbishop Desmond Tutu says about the South African concept of ubuntu: “[It] means my humanity is caught up, is inextricably bound up, in theirs. We belong in a bundle of life.” Simply, I am because we are.

We pray most frequently, “Thy Kingdom come.”

How do we understand that Kingdom? How does it work? In God’s Kingdom, surely, all will be love and sharing. God’s longing to love us and touch us is reflected in the lives of special saints.

St Phillip Neri begged for the gifts of the Holy Spirit on the eve of Pentecost, in the catacomb of San Sebastiano. A small ball of fire descended, entered his mouth and went to his heart. Phillip experienced such an intense love that he fell to the ground in ecstasy crying, “Enough, enough, Lord, I can bear no more.”

God, in his great love for us, sent Jesus to unravel the mystery. 1 John 3:2 tells us, “We are already God’s children … when he appears we shall be like Him.” Jesus has appeared and we are invited to be part of that Kingdom daily.

Jesus tell us, “The Kingdom of God is in your midst.” (Luke 17:21). The coming of that Kingdom cannot be observed (17:21). People will not see it and say, “Here it is”. But Jesus explains what the Kingdom of God is like in successive parables in Matthew 13.

The first is the mustard seed, a tiny seed, but it will grow into a tree so that birds can build a nest in it. The Kingdom is like yeast which a woman puts into a measure of flour until all of it is leavened.

These parables tell us how the Kingdom will grow in us, and in turn, how we will grow in community until all of us share that common love that makes up the recognizable body of Christ on earth.

We cannot be happy if everyone else is sad.

God’s love for us is so simple. Remember what it was like to play with your parents? Rolling on the floor, tickling each other, that brought you so close!

That is how God loves us. That is why God sent Jesus to share experiences with us - so we can see the Father’s love and touch that love!

The Kingdom is around us. We can touch it, and God can touch us. Thanks be to our Brother Jesus who exemplifies what the Kingdom is like. Jesus is God’s loving presence with us. Ubuntu. We are because He is.

• Sgt. Walter and S/Sgt. Simons participated in the Heritage Classic in Red Serge. There were almost 100 Mounties involved, but it was hard to tell. An interesting experience to say the least.

• Our Members continue to assist by providing relief duty in Deshambault Lake. The first couple Members drove up, while the next batch will be picked up at the airport in Carlyle by a RCMP plane and flown to PA where they will drive with the other Members they will be working with. Good experience and good opportunities to expand our Member’s knowledge.

• What a week. An individual suffering from Mental Health concerns called 911 by mistake.

This individual also attended a business in town and was disrespectful and although, what this individual is doing could be Criminal it is not being they are suffering from Mental Health concerns. We are not ignoring the issue and are hoping to find a 19112NP0 19112NP1

way to provide this individual assistance.

• Sooner or later an alarm will go off, and it will be legitimate. Not this week.

• A couple broke up.

This resulted in numerous files in a couple days period, and due to the relationship ending in a confrontational manner, both have been charged and have to attend court.

Unfortunately, children may have witnessed some of this. Many people split with no involvement of the Police, however, many times the Police walk away and shake their heads over the trivial things people fight over. The Police also shake their heads over the unrealistic expectations placed on the Police. Remember folks, if you are common law, in a relationship of any sort, or married, we don’t decide who owns what and who gets what.

That is civil. If the vehicle was bought by you, registered to you and driven by you and your other half takes the vehicle it is not theft. Both our vehicles are registered under my name and my wife calls them hers, because they are hers as much as they are mine. Thus, if she chooses to drive off in one and hide the other one there is nothing the police can do. She would not do that of course, right deer? Hun? I might be walking if she reads this.

• Two youth from two different educational facilities lost control of their tempers and both ended up in our gaol.

One, due to their history, remained while the other was released. The parents of one attempted to interfere with the arrest. They then attended the Detachment and one parent entered the Detachment and alleged their foot was run over, or they were almost run over??? and they were told they could have been charged with Obstruction for their actions of trying to block the arrest. This parent then lost their cool and began to use profan-

• You may wonder where this is coming from? Well, recently I had an individual upset about my actions. I listened to them swear and rant for over a half hour. I was called derogatory names, I was deemed to be a bully and I was told that I think I

ity, which was directed at the Police in the presence of a non-employee of the RCMP. They were then warned they could have been charged with Causing a Disturbance.

They then left, with both parents using profanity as they drove away.

• If you get a call asking for your banking information, your SIN number or any particulars, I can almost guarantee it is a fraud. If you get a call saying you have a warrant or the police are going to come arrest you unless you forward money or make a payment in any way, I can almost guarantee it is a fraud. We don’t work that way and Canada Revenue does not work that way.

• If you have a family Member that may be suffering from dementia, please photograph the entire residence and the belongings within.

Thus, when family and friends start taking what they think they are entitled to we will be better able to investigate and determine what has or has not been, well stolen.

• If your child is being harassed through social media or by text message, the first step is to block the individual, or individuals, from communicating with your child. If this does not work, call the police.

• An individual that was arrested and released then reported their residence was broken into and they had their TV stolen. Our investigation continues.

An individual was pulled over for having a burnt out headlight. They were driving with a Class 7 learners licence and fortunately for them their passenger was qualified as a supervising driver.

Unfortunately for them, the driver was on conditions not to have contact with the passenger and was subsequently charged with breaching their release conditions.

• Copper thefts have become a problem in our area and others. If

• We had some great success from the public this week in relation to driving complaints.

• An erratic driver was called in by another motorist. They were located shortly afterward and provided samples two and a half times over the legal limit.

• An erratic driver was reported and Members quickly located the vehicle driving erratically. The Member had lights and sirens on and still had to pull up beside the accused to get the accused to pull over. The driver had a suspended licence, had open liquor in the vehicle and was using their cell phone.

They were also charged for impaired operation of a motor vehicle after providing samples two times the legal limit.

Did I mention this all happened at 10:30 in the morning? The accused was upset that they were not given any breaks as it relates to the charges to which the officer replied. “You are bragging that you have been driving for over five years without a licence and you are bragging you are going to continue driving without a licence.

Why would I give you a break?”

• We had a minor collision involving a driver that was distracted reaching for a water bottle. This resulted in a $280 ticket for driving with undue care and attention.

• We are investigating a “gas and dash” from one of our gas stations. It could be accidental, could be deliberate.

• Members issued approximately 20 warnings and 15 tickets over the last week.

• Tickets were issued for no insurance - $580, fail to produce drivers licence - $100, fail to produce registration - $100, fail to stop at stop sign - $230, fail to wear seatbelt - $175, open liquor in a vehicle - $360, cell phone $280, window tint - $115, drive with undue care and attention - $280 and most expensive speeding ticket was for $324.

• Warnings were issued for speeding, fail to produce driver’s licence, passenger under 7 years old not secured, inadequate windshield, obstructed licence plate and trailer having no tail lights.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate taillights, and window tint.

Hope everyone had a very Happy Halloween on Oct. 31 and that you had many little ghosts and goblins stopping by your house – they are always sooo cute and excited.

Gray, Edel and John Cowan were dinner guests with Joyce and Jackie George (Redvers) and spent some time visiting with them on Oct. 30.

The last evening for the Haunted House was on Oct. 31 when the elder ghosts and goblins entered into the Hall of Horrors at Alida Rink so that the younger ones were able to tour about town and collect their Halloween treats. It was another successful evening with 85 guests touring the House. At the close of the evening the final Halloween draws were made – The Halloween cake was won by Zachary Boettcher. Then the four Halloween prizes were drawn – 1) Beware Wreath won by Margaret Peet; 2) 1st Clown Wreath = Shelly Cowan; 3) 2nd Clown Wreath = April Junk; 4) Halloween Goodie Bag = Margaret Peet. These four prizes were donated to the Haunted House by Tennille Kruse of The Creative Nest in Minot (Shelly’s niece). All the generous donations by everyone and all the volunteers who gave their time are greatly appreciated – it really does help to make the event a success. A total of 455 guests visited our 19th Haunted House during the six days the event was held this year and brought in over $7500 (note no expenses removed) – another huge success for the Alida Rec. Board. Hope to see everyone again next year at our 20th Haunted House event – Plans are already in progress – it’s sure to be

bigger and better – see you there. The Escape Rooms were only opened on the Friday nights, and they too proved to be quite successful, at least there were many requests for the rooms and unfortunately we had to tell them that they had missed them – hopefully they will return next year and maybe be open for more evenings – Wait and see!

John Cowan left for his home near Blairmore, AB and then to Nelson, BC. We will surely miss him now after he had spent over a month here helping with the harvest and with some of the cleanup afterwards.

Another month has come to an end and hopefully the farmers have completed their harvest for this year – The Harvest of 2019 will not be forgotten for many years to come. It will be discussed over many a cup of coffee. Let’s hope we never see another one like it. We are now into November – oh were does the time go? It’s so hard to believe that inside of a couple of months we will be into a new year. We will all hope that 2020 will be much more enjoyable than this past year. However for now we must move forward through November.

It was Alida’s fall supper on Nov. 3 and a fairly good crowd of approximately 200 was in attendance. It was so nice to be able to sit and enjoy a delicious meal and the camaraderie among friends.

Yes, another great meal with delicious food (especially the desserts) was enjoyed – keep up the great work ladies. See you next year on the 1st Sunday in November – Remember, It’s a date.

The topic at Circle of Friends was SHOES. In our childhood they came from Eaton’s catalogue.

Parents were to trace around a child’s foot, and send it with the order. The staff could tell how long and wide to match. Grace hated bare feet and would wear anything. As the youngest of eight she wore had me downs. One pair from

an aunt had high heels, which came to Margaret.

She hated them. Eunice had bare feet a lot, and had to wear her brother’s rubber boots.

At coffee time, Fred told of a family in their district who came to school barefoot, winter and summer. When the snow fell the teacher and school board reported the father to Social Services. He was jailed for a short time, and when he came home all the children had shoes.

Joan said, “I love shoes, I had a pair to match each outfit.” But Mom, you can’t take 6 bags to the Villa!” Amber loved them, but always

Congratulations to Lisa Myers and Ken Hall who were married at an intimate wedding ceremony on Oct. 12. This event, which Ken and Monique Myers attended, took place in Mississauga, ON. A larger destination wedding will be held in December in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Word has been received of the passing of Mike Worniak of Lumsden. He passed away on Oct. 18 at the age of 87 years. His parents were former Wawota residents who build the Uptown Cafe. Other family members were sisters, Sally and Eva. Garry Dickson spent 10 days visiting with family members in Ontario during the Thanksgiving weekend.

The Wawota Haunted House has wrapped up its 4th year of production. This energetic group of five executives and 30 members start early in the year. This year’s theme was Medieval Dungeon. Due to its popularity an extra viewing was added this year, making a total of three adult events and one for children. Attendance surpassed 700 people. Not only does this provide entertainment for the area, but its proceeds are given to different charities. This year’s recipients are the Kenosee Lion’s Green Space and the Wawota Day Care.

Wawota and attending Moe Corkish’s funeral.

News from the Federal Election... Not only did Robert Kitchen retain his seat in parliament but did so with the second highest vote total of any candidate across Canada at 84.4%. (Darren Kurek in Battle River-Crowfoot a riding in east central Alberta had 85.5%) and the SourisMoose Mountain had the second highest percentage of votes in all of Canada with 77.3%( Carlton in Ontario had 77.4 %).That is what democracy is all about.

I mailed UNICEF a cheque for $460.00 last week. This was the proceeds from the Halloween signs that were sold.

Ralph Mills said his first skates were his mother’s. His feet got too big. Mariann had two older sisters, and was nine before she got a pair of her own.

Last night Mauela Dick, who was on duty, played for all of us who love to sing hymns.

It will soon be Remembrance Day on Nove. 11, so please take time to remember those who sacrificed their life for our freedom We Shall Remember Them.

Harvest Showdown a gathering place

By Calvin Daniels This week in Yorkton the Grain Millers Harvest Showdown takes place.

For a journalist who got his start primarily writing about all things agriculture, after having grown up on a small mixed farm, it always feels like I am very much in my element attending the event.

The summers of my youth were spent showing livestock at summer fairs, but through the years there was a shift to big fall events.

Where once only the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto existed, a trip east on a train when I was 12 still a treasured memory, Canadian Western Agribition sprung up in Regina. The birth of Agribition was huge in terms of marketing purebred livestock genetics in the west, and

my Dad and I showed there for the first decade or so.

The success of Agribition helped Farmfair in Edmonton, AgEx in Brandon, and smaller shows such as Harvest Showdown take root.

In the case of Harvest Showdown it is something of an anniversary event for me. I arrived at Yorkton This Week in September and one of my earliest assignments was to go down to the Yorkton Exhibition Association to interview then manager Shaun Morin about plans for the inaugural Harvest Showdown – then held in October. I found Shaun pounding pegs into the asphalt of the parking lot for the tents used in the early years to house livestock.

That was 30-years ago, and here I am still looking forward to cov-

ering the event.

It has been an interesting journey for Harvest Showdown.

Through the years things have come, commercial sheep shows, llama shows, heavy draft horse hitch events and canola days, and have gone by the wayside, all of the aforementioned.

But, two core aspects have stayed constant, anchors for Harvest Showdown if you will; the commercial cattle show and sale, and a commercial grain show. The pair of events has worked because they attract the average producer in the parkland to bring their best cattle and grains to town to be judged.

I suspect for most exhibitors the red ribbon of winning, while appreciated, is not necessarily the primary motivation for participat-

ing. That key motivation is much more likely to be a good excuse to attend the show and talk ‘shop’ with fellow producers. Harvest is over, the cattle in pasture, and producers need that break to just relax a little among people who know exactly what challenges they have faced.

This year of course the challenges of weather have been legion, and the mood of producers may be more subdued than most years, but in that regard they will not be alone when meeting at Harvest Showdown.

And therein lies the reason for Harvest Showdown lasting three decades now, being a place for everyday farmers to gather to share their passion for the business of agriculture.

Parents are reminded to continue to use the Home Logic Parent Portal to keep up with their children’s grades and attendance. ParenThe basketball season has now started and a busy season is ahead for the Sr. Boys. Practices run almost every Monday and Wednesday and tournaments are slotted in for Norquay, Stoughton, Estevan, Oxbow, Rocanville, Gravelbourg and Davidson. The completion of the season will be the SHSAA playoffs starting with Conferences in March and concluding with Hoopla on March 23rd and 24th!ts can contact the school for information about how to set up access. What does Remembrance Day Mean to you?

Submitted by Doug Waldner That is a question that can be asked in many ways to many people. It is asked to students to inspire artwork and essays. It is a question we should all ask ourselves. Is it just another day off work? Is it a day to spend with family? Is it a day that you can sleep in?

Remembrance Day is celebrated on November 11, because the cease �ire that ended the First World War, the “War to End All Wars”, came into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Private George Lawrence Price was was a Canadian soldier who was shot by a Geman sniper and died at 10:58 on November 11 1918, and is recognized as the last of the

approximately 61,000 Canadian military personnel who died in that war. Can we imagine what Remembrance Day meant to the loved ones of Private Price, or the sons, daughters, wives, husbands, fathers, mothers or other beloved members of the families of the 61,000 others who sacri�iced their lives in that war.

Or what Remembrance Day meant to the family members and loved ones of the 42.000 Canadians killed in World War 2, or to the 516 Canadians killed in the Korean war, or the 56 Canadians killed in the Viet Nam War, or the 159 Canadians killed in the Afganistan mission, or the 130 Canadians who were killed in Peace Keeping missions, or any deaths that occured

Private George Price has been recognized because his death seemed somehow more tragic because his death came only minutes before the cease �ire, but to family and friends, each and every one of the 103,861 deaths mentioned was equally as tragic and devastating.

I have never lost anyone to war, but I do remember my mother crying,eveery year, as she watched Remembrance Day ceeremonies, and remembered the friends of her youth who are buried in foreign lands.

Remembrance Day was very powerful monent each year in my mother’s life.

What does Remembrance Day mean to those who were injured or maimed in their service, or their friends and family? Those whose service cost them their health and wellness had to, and have to, live with the consequences of those injuries. Their families and communities also have to cope with the consequences of that service and those injuries.

The devastation of war and the consequences of deaths and injuries are something we, in Canada, can all relate to in our own way. I recently heard a singer discuss her youth in Holland. Although she was born after World War 2, she was raised with the knowledge that her land was freed from Nazi occupation by Canadian soldiers. She mentioned how her grandparents had been in the Underground and helped Allied soldiers. Remembrance Day has an entirely different meaning for her, a child of a country that was occupied, than we in Canada can hope to imagine.

Consider what Remembrance Day means to you, wear a poppy, and on this November 11 please attend a Remembrance Day Ceremony.

How and why we celebrate Remembrance Day REMEMBRANCE DAY IN CANADA Remembrance Day is celebrated annually on November 11 to honour the contributions of all military service members who gave their lives defending our nation. Similar commemorative events, such as Decoration Day in June and Paardeberg Day in February, were held before World War I. However, the scale of the Great War and the extensive human cost incurred by the con�lict led to the adoption of a single celebration.

Canada’s armed forces have since been involved in a number of con�licts, including World War II, the Korean War, the Gulf War and the war in Afghanistan, as well as a long list of peacekeeping operations across the globe.

Veterans of these wars are likewise honoured on Remembrance Day. HOW TO CELEBRATE REMEMBRANCE DAY Here are some ideas for honouring our veterans and their bravery:

Remembrance Day has been recognized in Canada since 1931. However, the occasion was initially known as Armistice Day, and was exclusively a celebration of the end of World War I. Here’s what Remembrance Day is all about today and how you can celebrate it.

Think of all those families that sent their loved ones off to the World War, �irst the 1st World War when the early settlers in this country sent off their young men to �ight for the countries, many had left 20 years or less to come to a better land, many of those families lost loved ones. Then, not so many years later, the 2nd World War hit the homelands of many that came to Canada after the 1st World War and the suffering endured by many at that time.

This November 11th, if you have not explained to your family that Canada paid a heavy toll on families during the last war, the men and women who fought for our freedom.

I have heard the stories from families in Europe of the hardships - I heard them here in Canada. Until you have seen �irst hand the ravages of war or seen in other countries, especially the communist countries. What people have feared or have NOT feared, what here in Canada is available to those who strive to earn a good life.

I visited 12 families in another country and to see the smiles for the things we take for granted. Salt – what I was taught was the bread of life. They do not have, it is like giving candy to a child. They cannot get it; a candle – the sparkle in the grandmother’s eyes made my eyes tear, when the power goes out, there is not generator or �lashlight.

We are blessed in this country and we need to realize that we live so close to Military installations. The missile site location just south of the border, between ourselves and the neighbours we live close to, then many have ever thought of.

Those that travel south know this, as we as Canadian patriots need to teach our families that freedom is the rights we take for granted. Three meals a day, new shoes, a warm bed, a church of our choice, friends, a cup of coffee. The pleasures of music, television, candy, holidays we have this Why? Those who fought for us and their descendants. A land of plenty – it is ours because of those who loved it too.

A lady in another country, said to me last March, “Linda, “Nothing, nothing we do changes, it just stays the same,” quote of dear friend Lillian, 2019 Cuba.

“Let Us Remember” the price they paid for us all.

The big effects of small-time commitments Submitted by Michele Amy A few weeks ago, I was shopping in the Co-op in Carlyle, and a woman from White Bear and I were both criss-crossing paths, each obviously searching for something. So I asked her if she had seen the graham crumbs, and she had not, but then she asked me if I had seen another item. We both laughed and carried on our up and down pattern.

A few moments later, her cart zoomed around the corner, and she called out where she had seen the item I was looking for. Which was the exact moment I saw what she was looking for. We exchanged some chit chat and carried on our way. Just

shoppers helping shoppers I mean, each of us could have found an employee, and they would have been happy to help, but she was there, I was there – that worked too!

It was a small time commitment that made a difference to each of us.

We’ve all probably been in this situation; the one where we go to a party or an event or a business for the first time, and perhaps we don’t really know many people, or the “lay of the land”. Or we have that blank look on our face, trying to disguise our discomfort.

And then that helpful person singles us out, inviting us in, explaining the “set up” or the expectations, or where to hang our coat and the

blast of relief we feel is pretty strong. Then afterwards, we feel like we have that friendly face that we can sort of go to if we have questions. These people offer small, generous time commitments, but they make a big difference to someone who feels at sea.

This is something that sets many businesses aside from others, when they have a designated person to greet people at the door, or when they offer assistance when a person looks confused. A small part of a job, which garners large results over time.

This is also one of the many festival features which sets the Carlyle Dickens Village Festival apart from the crowd of other community events around the Province. That feeling of awkwardness is one which unites most of us is alleviated by the presence of community volunteers who play host for the event.

There are official “greeters” and hosts, who dress the part, take shifts in Fezziwig’s entrance and who hand out maps, chat with folks, direct them to the places they most want to go, and generally offer an official “friendly face” for newcomers and community members alike!

They make a point of knowing what’s going on where,and helping others to feel welcomed and valued.

Hosts and greeters can be found at Fezziwig’s during the Dickens Village Festival. community: the people who work in the stores, the many buskers who play and entertain, the people on the street who dress in period costumes and a big smile, and encourage others to enjoy themselves, the children who are running around with giant smoked turkey legs and telling others where they purchased them.

Being a host simply means watching for people who seem a little – well – lost or confused, and jumping in with a quick smile, a quick “can I help you find something?” or a generous offer to accompany people to the place they’re trying to find. A tiny time commitment – but something we can all do.

In fact, I wonder if this isn’t just a good way to be generally? Just people looking out for each other and keeping

an open mind for what might be needed, and being willing to offer a helping hand, regardless of whether it’s our job or not – the power of a small bit of time freely shared.

Maybe folks look at the huge project they believe the Dickens festival is, and are somewhat nervous about – well – getting caught up in huge time commitments. But in reality, many hands make light work, and perhaps there is a way to make a tiny time commitment which really impacts the overall festival.

Michele Amy will be making up the schedule for volunteer hosts and hostesses for the Dickens festival pretty soon.

The criteria? Three free hours, an ability to smile and to chat with people, a willingness to dress in period costume (and we have some for lending if

needed) and a familiarity with the schedule and location of stuff.

It’s a great way to be involved in the festival for a short time, meet some lovely people, enjoy being at the hub of the event and helping out. It’s especially awesome if you’re new to town and are wanting to meet some other people and to get involved.

Small time commitment.

And because it’s located in Fezzywig’s pub, you’d also get to listen to the music, enjoy a glass of wine or beverage of your choice while brightening people’s experience of the festival.

George E.I. Wilvers 1937 - 2019

Surrounded by family, George Wilvers passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 1, 2019 in Virden, MB at the age of 81 years.

George will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 18 years, Yvonne Leroy; his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Laurette and her children, Kyle (Candi), Emily (11) and Kristan (Liam), Connor (4) and Owen (2); Collette (Joël) and their children Stéphane and Gabrielle (Jean-Bocar); Gilles (Diane) and their children Brett, Courtney, and Jaime-Lynn; stepson Rudy (Annie) Leroy and their children Kristie (Donny), Sadie (13), Emily (11), Sarah (9), and Parker (5) and Michael (Kelsie) and Claire (2); sister Lorraine (Jean) Lalonde and brother Roland (Joyce) Wilvers; great-aunt Simone Magotiaux. George is also survived by numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.

George was predeceased by his wife of 29 years Irene (Cop) Wilvers; parents, Jean and Lambertine (Peters) Wilvers; parents in-law Wilfrid and Irma (Petit) Cop; brother Marcel and sister Jeanne (Pierrard); as well as in-laws, a niece and a nephew.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Maurice R.C Church, Bellegarde, SK with Rev. Ronald Andree presiding. Interment will take place at the parish cemetery immediately following the service. All are welcome to join the family at the Bellegarde Community Hall for the luncheon.

If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 1910 McIntyre Street, Regina, Sask., S4P 2R3.

A refresher on winter driving The main cause of collisions in winter months is failing to adjust to the changing conditions.

Preparing to see and to be seen If you cannot see through your windows, you should not drive. If your lights and signals are to protect you, they must be visible.

Before you drive, do the following: • Brush the snow off your car.

• Scrape the windshield, rear and side windows.

• Clear your heater air intake (this is usually in front of the windshield).

• Clean your headlights, tail lights and signal lights.

• Be sure to clear your tissue boxes, sunglasses, papers, etc., away from defroster outlets.

• Drive with your headlights on at all times. Even on a clear day, swirling snow makes it difficult to see and to be seen.

problems require a number of changes from summer driving techniques. The general rule for driving on slippery conditions is drive slowly.

You should not use cruise control on icy or slippery roads. This is even more important when the road may have black ice formed on it (a thin layer of transparent ice found on the road or other paved surfaces).

Traction varies tremendously with temperature changes. Icy roads will look just the same at -2 C or -22 C, but will be far more slippery at the warmer temperature.

Winter driving calls for special driving skills.

This means gentle acceleration, gentle braking and small, smooth steering movements.

Reduced traction means the grip between your tires and the slippery surface is fragile.

If you accelerate hard, you go beyond the amount of traction that is available and your wheels spin. If you brake too hard and your wheels lock, you break the traction, which means that when you turn the steering wheel, the vehicle will not turn - it will continue in the direction it was going when the wheels locked.

The first snowfalls During the first few snowfalls, drive very slowly and keep a fivesecond following distance. It takes time to change from your summer driving patterns.

ping distance. But on ice, especially when it’s near the freezing point or if you are driving fast, you are better off to threshold-brake by pushing on the brake up to the point just before it locks. (See Threshold braking.)

If the surface is slippery, flatten the corner or curve by positioning your vehicle in the left side of your lane prior to making your turn.

As you enter the curve, gradually steer across the lane so that as you near the mid-point of the curve the vehicle is near the right side of the lane with its wheels straight. As you exit the curve, gradually steer back across the lane towards the left side. For left curves, reverse the process. This will lessen the sideways force and reduce the chance that you will spin out. Slow entry into the curve is crucial or your vehicle may not make it around the curve.

Because there is reduced traction available for stopping and turning, reduce your speed when conditions are wet or slippery. As well, give yourself a following distance even longer than three seconds.

Never use cruise control when roads are wet or slippery.

Search for traction.

Look for sand or grit.

Choose snow rather than ice. A small movement to one side will often move you from a low traction icy patch onto snow or
