The big stage comes to Carlyle

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Moose Mountain Wado Kai Karate Club hosted a Kata clinic and Kumite competition on Nov. 22, 23 and 24. Jason Humphries is the head instructor of the Club and holds a black belt. The club has 85 members at present and welcomes anyone interested to join or who would like to volunteer.

The event was organized

by Kevin Dyck and Roland Bouchard, with the help of the club’s members.

This is an annual event that includes participants from across Canada. This year there were approximately 130 participants of all levels of achievement. Karate participants are identified by a colour of belt.

Each colour signifies the level of advancement the participant has achieved. A beginner wears a white belt and advances to a black belt.

To begin karate a person must be five years of age or close to their fifth birthday. The belt colours begin with white, then yellow, orange, green, blue, purple,

brown and finally black.

A red belt is worn by a competitor considered a junior, who has the skill to be a black belt, that is under 16 years of age.

Friday night at the Kata clinic, the instructor was Sensei Ron Mattie, who is an eight degree black belt and Sensei Darren Humphries who is a six degree black belt. Ron Mattie was attending from Hamilton, Ontario. Also attending from Welland, Ontario was Sensei Dennis Labbe who is a nine degree black belt and is the President of Shintani Karate Federation. Kata is a sequence of movements against multiple imaginary opponents, similar to shadow boxing.

Saturday at Gordon F. Kells High School was the Kumite competition. To spar in the competition one must complete a Kata demonstration, which grades the participant.

The sparring competition is a two-minute Kumite [match] that is won by the competitor scoring the most points.

A competitor can win the match should they obtain three points at

any time before two minutes.

Each bout has five judges; four corner and one centre. The four corner judges have two flags - a red and a white designated for each opponent to indicate points. To score a point a competitor must receive three flags of his designated colour from the corner judges.

The competition area is called a dojo and it is respectful that each competitor bows when entering or leaving the facility.

Karate is a martial art that has its beginnings dating back thousands of years. It originated in Okinawa and it was influenced by Chinese martial arts known as Kung Fu. It was introduced into Canada

by Masami Tsuruoka and has a national organization with over 16,000 participants.

The weekend event included a banquet at Kuzina’s Bistro in Carlyle and an instructor clinic that was held on Sunday at Carlyle Elementary School.

The annual Shoe Box Campaign had another successful year.

Seventy-two boxes were packed at the Free Methodist Church last week. There were 12 volunteers helping out.

Quick resolve to rail strike good for unity

By Murray Mandryk We need to re-focus our attention on practical solutions to existing problems if this country is going to work.

Also helpful would be to not create new, impractical problems for the purposes of scoring political points.

That would seem to be the problem with Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s notion of exploring a provincewide police force to replace the RCMP, a very expensive answer for a province that purports to be struggling with budgetary and financial constraints of our own.

The country cannot and will not work if we are creating problems faster than we solve the many, many ones that naturally exist.

So perhaps the focus of the federal Liberal government needs to be the 3,200 Canadian National Railway Co. workers that went on strike at midnight Tuesday, a direct threat to oil, potash and grain shipments in this province and across the country.

Of course, on gets the right of conductors and yard operators to walk off their jobs at CN as part of the free and collective bargaining process. Given that a key point of this dispute is the working conditions that are directly related to public safety that’s party of moving any commodity on rail, one might even have a little sympathy for at least the concerns of railworkers that are striking.

That said, one can not overstated how important it for a company that carries $250-billion worth of goods annually to be working efficiently.

It is especially critical right now because the lack of pipeline capacity means we are seeing a bottleneck of petroleum and chemical products that account for 20 per cent of all CN annual revenue via moving 180,000 barrels a day. (By comparison, grain and fertilizer account for 16 per cent of CN’s business.)

It is expected that CN Rail will supply 5,650 hopper cars per week throughout November and one can understate how important that is.

Last week was unseasonably warm through much of Western Canada, which means now is the time to move grain, oil seeds and pulses before it gets colder. In December when shipping slows down, the weekly grain car allotment is expected to fall to 4,150 cars a week, a level it is expected to stay at until March.

A prolonged rail strike will only feed into the existing problems.

So one can understand why Premier Scott Moe and his Saskatchewan Party government feel the strike needs to be addressed immediately, possibly, through a recall of Parliament to before Dec. 5 to deal with back-to-work legislation.

In fact, it might be better if the Sask. Party government and Agriculture Minister David Marit take other pre-emptive action like seeking more hopper cars in December and January to deal with a backlog in moving what still is a very large crop this year. Perhaps everyone is still holding out the hope that this railways strike will be resolved in days and weeks instead of weeks and months.

Regardless, all this would seem to a perfect example where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could demonstrate good faith in the federation by recognizing the seriousness of this problem and putting resources to a quick resolution.

One can understand the frustration when so much doesn’t work.

Unhelpful is anger over problems that are then repeated on social media. We need to instead focus on solutions.

Almost as unhelpful is acts that seem more about political statements that solutions to real problems, like Alberta’s exploration of its own provincewide police force to replace the RCMP. It would be more costly and hurt Saskatchewan where mounties are trained.

We should be thinking about whether the alternatives are worse.

And we should be focussing on solving problems in this nation that do exist. That’s how this country works.

The tribe has spoken . . . and we are concerned On May 31, 2000 a new reality show was launched by CBS simply called Survivor. I don’t remember what it was that attracted me to watch that first episode but once I did I was a fan. It was a departure from typical summer fare, but it worked. Thirteen weeks after the premiere, 51.7 million viewers watched the 3-hour finale, while Nielsen reported that 125 million tuned in to see the part where the Shelley Luedtke first winner was announced.

That initial season was renamed Survivor: Borneo to distinguish it from other roll-outs of the show that now number 39. I have been there for them all. It’s okay, let the eye rolling begin.

Despite various methods of dividing people into tribes, and the twists and turns the producers introduce to each new season, much of the original premise for the show remains in place. A group of strangers are marooned on an island. They have to work together to survive, but compete against each other to win. So what’s at stake? One million dollars.

The show is not without its detractors, critics and controversies, including where it found itself recently. Concerns over unwanted physical contact by a male player towards some of the female players quickly became a story about some of the women exaggerating their concerns to get ahead in the game.

It sparked tremendous comment and debate, along with the issuance of apologies by some of those involved. It’s not the first time the show has dealt with polarizing issues, and likely won’t be the last, because remember, there’s a lot of money at stake and it’s interesting to see what people will do for a shot at big dollars.

The initial success of Survivor led to a frenzy of other reality shows as networks jumped on the bandwagon of a genre that seemed to capture viewer attention. While many dropped by the wayside, Survivor maintains its place in reality TV as well as in larger social conversations outside of the game, es-

pecially when determining where personal character ends and gamesmanship begins.

Psychologists continually study and rank the top 20 areas of life that cause people the most worry.

Typically sitting at #2 is financial anxiety, bested only by worry for the future as it relates to aging.

Analysts say there is overlap here because when it comes to money, not having enough for the future is a major cause of worry. So if an opportunity comes along to pocket some financial security, should anyone be faulted for the tactics used to get them to the top?

Ethical behavior in business, politics and entertainment continues to decline. The more lucrative things are, the easier it becomes to justify behavior that is at best shady, but quickly becomes deceptive, deceitful and even corrupt. It entered into a charity I used to support that worked in several countries around the world. Allegations of financial wrong-doing at the top put them in a defensive position, and it is questionable what the long-term consequence might be. At the heart of the matter were the steps taken to cover their tracks, and the seeming lack of contrition or humility expressed by anyone in leadership. Regrettably, what happened to this unethical charity affects others since it sows seeds of disillusionment and cynicism.

Money seems to be such a powerful lure that some are willing to step outside of what they know to be right and justify most any type of behavior. It matters little who might be hurt in the process. But it isn’t just the money at issue. It’s trust. Credibility.

Even optimism for the future.

Survivor is a game. When the players return to the world outside of it, many seem to get a pass on their behavior. But life isn’t a game. We need to be able to function together knowing that our interactions will be honest, above board and ethical. Integrity and trust need to matter.

At stake for the competitors on a reality show is money. At stake for each of us is something far different. Reputation. Honor. Dignity. Those are worth so much more.

That’s my outlook.

Carlyle Dickens Village Festival is also a music festival Submitted by Michele Amy Did you know that this little festival is also one of the only remaining free music festivals in the country? And the other one is the Regina Folk Festival? That’s two Saskatchewan communities standing out from the crowd in the overall promotion of live music.

That is something that Charles Dickens would have approved of. Did you know that Charles Dickens actually wrote the libretto (words and story) for an operetta in 1836 – it was titled “The Village Coquettes. He also wrote several songs which were popular in his day ( “The Ivy Green” was one of those), was an avid supporter of opera and classical music and his sister Fanny was an accomplished pianist and singer?

In the infamous “Christmas Carol” Mr. Fezzywig is the character who is kind, generous and hosts an incredibly fun party where laughter, music, dance and conversation with friends is highlighted as the worthwhile part of a life worth living.

Perpetuating the spirit of Dickens in more ways than one, the committee has created their own Fezzywig’s pub, offering a full out free music festival as part of the Dickens weekend. Hosted in conjunction with Cornerstone Theatre, the Hall board, and the committee, this is the place to rest your weary bones all weekend, enjoy a conversation, watch the kids relax in the children’s zone and warm your spirit.

Michele Amy, who also co-ordinates the Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party, is hosting the mainstage, and Paul Twietmeyer is providing sound. All local musicians and performers have been booked with a focus on creating variety. Some familiar faces and many new entertainers are being celebrated this year, in an attempt to ensure that a wide variety of talented people are featured on our stages.

Weekly RCMP report

Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • Unfortunately we are seeing an increase in calls to 911 that do not warrant the use of 911.

• We had another false alarm. My colleague in Moosomin hates these alarms more than I do. He has determined there have been at least 7,691 so far this year in Saskatchewan.

• As we have reported many times, 911 is for an emergency. The following are a couple of examples we have seen recently. An individual had been kicked out of a residence and didn’t have a ride so they called 911. Another individual locked themselves out of their truck and apparently forgot their phone in the truck so went the extra length to borrow a phone to call 911. Fortunately, it appears the individual managed to get into their vehicle before any extensive involvement by the RCMP. It is not that we won’t respond to your concerns, it is just that if it is not

an emergency, please call 310 RCMP (7267) • So you are trying to unlock an old phone and can’t remember the password. It can be frustrating and annoying, more so when the Police show up being you somehow dialled 911. No emergency, and no further Police involvement was required.

• We had approximately 800 litres of fuel reported stolen from a well site south of Kisbey.

If you have any information about this theft, please call our Detachment.

• One of the individuals we deal with frequently has again chosen not to comply with their release conditions and they are facing another charge. The idea behind release conditions is an individual promises to comply with the conditions of their release so they can get out of gaol.

Our experience is most of these people who have already failed to comply with the law. Well, they have a hard time following their release conditions and find themselves breaching there conditions and often spend more time in gaol for that offence.

• We had a black Ford Rang-

er possibly stolen and driven a short distance and damaged at Good Birds Point. If you have any information regarding this incident, please advise our Detachment.

• We assisted Manor Fire Department with a tractor fire. Unfortunately, the tractor did not do so well and was totally destroyed.

• It is always rewarding when the public suggests we focus on something in our article to the paper. As we often state, we can’t do this alone without the help of the community. A concerned citizen brought up the issue of vehicles driving with obscured windows. This usually occurs during the winter months when our windows frost over. Don’t fool yourselves folks, this is dangerous and people have been injured and killed because someone could not see out of their vehicle. In addition, we find there is an increase in collisions because people cannot see. We know you are in a rush and don’t have time, however, please take the time, so we don’t come along and delay you, or worse, you get involved in a collision because you could not see through your

windows.

• A domestic dispute resulted in one individual being charged and the victim being treated for injuries at the hospital.

• We kept the peace as one individual left a residence that they previously occupied with another individual.

Many people don’t realize that we can assist to keep the peace, however, we can only assist individuals until they remove personal items such as clothing and toiletries. We are not there to determine who owns the car or the TV. If you are in a marriage, common law relationship or anything that may resemble such a relationship we look at the property as being owned by both parties and it becomes civil and we do not generally deal with civil matters.

• Every week, one way or another we deal with offences relating to drugs. We often get involved in investigations where individuals sell or give away their prescription drugs. If you are aware of any such instances please advise us so we can better conduct our investigations and attempt to prevent this from continuing.

crime. The drugs are being abused • Many people have been surprised to find a cat or dog curled up on their front steps. Recently someone found a person passed out curled up on the front steps of their residence. They did not know who it was, but we were able to identify them and give them a warm place to sober up and be safe for the night.

• A partner agency asked for us to inquire in relation to the whereabouts of someone they were looking for that might be residing in our area. We checked and they must be in trouble if the Police are looking for them and the subject’s parents had kicked them out of the house.

We will continue to look for this individual as will our partner agency.

• We had a hit and run reported, however, apparently nobody witnessed this. If you witness someone backing into or hitting another vehicle in any way with their vehicle please document what you saw, leave it for the damaged vehicle owner, or call the Police.

• We had traffic court last week and one individual had chosen to fight their $180 ticket

for speeding. Once the evidence was heard and their unenviable driving record was produced the Justice increased their fine to $480.

• We would like to remind everyone that we don’t make the rules, nor do we make the laws, rather we do our best to enforce them and we utilize discretion quite frequently. When someone is impaired there is little, if any, discretion.

We arrest the operator of the motor vehicle and we seize the vehicle they were driving as per SGI regulations. Unfortunately, many people lend their vehicles to people they thought they could trust, or hoped they could trust, and the vehicle gets towed and seized. If you want your vehicle back early it is up to the discretion of SGI as to whether you get your vehicle out early.

• Tickets were issued for fail to stop at stop sign - $230, fail to wear seatbelt - $175, cell phone -$280, fail to produce drivers licence $100.

Shelly Cowan and daughter Ainsley accompanied Lacie Nilsen to Regina on Nov.r 18 where they attended the Nutcracker Ballet performance at the Conexus Centre. They reported that it was awesome.

There were approximately 18 people from Alida and area (which included Ken/Diane Potapinski, Gille/Cheryle Boutin, Robbie/Shandi Boutin) who went on an agritechnica ag and sightseeing tour from Nov. 9 to 18. They visited Hanover, Wolfsburg and Bremen in Germany and then a few days in Amsterdam before returning home. The Boutins stayed for an extra week in order to continue on to visit Italy before they returned home on Nov. 24.

On Nov. 23 Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan travelled to Estevan where they took in the movie “Frozen 2”.

It was The Grey Cup weekend and unfortunately The Riders didn’t make these playoffs. (They’re waiting for 2020 when the Grey Cup game will be held in Regina – right? – That’s the excuse I’m sticking to anyway.) Did settle down to watch the game and decided that I would cheer for the Bombers – after all waiting for 29 years to win this cup – it’s their turn! Go – Winnipeg – Go. And that’s just what they did – boy did they ever come out to show us how football is to be played. Hamilton tried their best but

just couldn’t get it done this time around. Way to go Bombers. Now Curling will soon be taking over the televised sporting events – I sure hope so – actually my schedule says Nov. 27 so I’m keeping my fingers crossed, I do enjoy watching that game.

I’m beginning to put up a few of my Christmas decorations – now that’s early for me, but I don’t move as fast anymore (hate to admit it) however my old bones surely do keep telling me that so I’m going to use that as my excuse (ha ha). It helps having a grandchild nearby who is getting excited for the season and is also willing to help with the decorating.

Time does go by quickly as Christmas parties and special events are being scheduled – keep your eyes open for any new happenings which may be happening in your area. Oh it surely is the busy time of the year. Take care while you’re out and about.

Maryfield Villa News Submitted by Janet Mark Marie said that if no one cleaned away the snow, they went in the barn. It was a cold place to go. As Ralph said, “ When Mother calls you “ought” to go.”

“When Nature calls you must obey” Carol knew a lot of them as they moved often, but said “They were all “adaptable.” Janet began birdwatching there, among a young shelterbelt.

Joan remembered that her dad built a new outhouse with an oak seat.

There were a few Halloween stories. When the boys came “tipping” Leora’s Dad let the dog out.

Grace’s father moved the outhouse forward and the boys fell in. Charlotte knew of some lads who found a grouch inside the outhouse when they came to tip it over.

Roy Bortolotto and United Church members held a communion service on Thursday, with Danny Roberts assisting. More good singing just happened when Cheryl and Henry Friesen came back to visit Leora, and when Sandra Dick, her sisters, and Charlene Berg sang Sunday evening.

Charlotte Kovach brought us a box of oranges from Rod Johnston, a movie and popcorn on Saturday night. Visitors included Isobel Robertson of Moosomin, and Kim and Samantha Zacamack, Regina, with Joyce Gillies.

Thank you to Randy “Greysiuk who took care of my trilight, and to all the family of staff who are preparing the courtyard for Lightup.

The topic of Circle of Friends was Outhouses. We all had them, at home and school, where there were Boys and Girls, complete with Eaton’s catalogue. We saved the soft papers from Christmas oranges and one gave them to her best friend as a present.

Fred said the outhouse was educational. In addition to the catalogue there was lots of writing on the wall. Ashes from the kitchen stove helped to keep down the odor and the flies.

Cougars win battle with Mustangs Nicole Currie Sports Contributor The lone game for the Cougars this past weekend, was Friday night, Nov. 22 in Midale. The Cougars were looking to move up the ranks, wanting to come away with a win.

The Cougars remained very disciplined this game with only four penalties, not wanting to give up those powerplay goals to the other team.

It was Dakota Rose’s show, as he scored a goal in all three periods, earning the hat trick on the night. Dakota scored the only goal for the Cougars, that were trailing by one at the end of the first.

Cougar netminder Glasser shut down the Mustangs, not allowing a goal for the rest of the game. The Cougars capitalized on that with goals from Rose, McLean and Greenwood in the second. Sam Matthewson and Rose each scored in the third, giving the Cougars a 6-2 win.

Be sure to be at the rink this Friday, Nov. 29 as the Cougars host The Carnduff Red Devils.

The game will also be broadcasted by CJ1150 if you’re out of town.

Carlyle A&W is back with a fresh new look

By Kelly Johnson The Observer After undergoing extensive renovations, the A&W in Carlyle re-opened to customers on Friday, Nov. 22, after been closed since Sept. 6.

The interior has been redecorated, painted and newly designed seating is in place. The renovations provide a more accessible dining area and upgraded washrooms. The kitchen was also remodeled and is more streamlined to aide in the preparation of the food.

The renovations went smoothly and the number of employees is up, with some positions still to be filled.

The restaurant had a soft opening on Sept. 21.

Manager Jesse Smith stated, “ a lot of positive feedback came from the guests” during the reopening and he is enthusiastic and appreciative of the return of the restaurants valued customers. All proceeds from the soft opening went to the Carlyle Food Bank.

The restaurant also was accepting donations of food items that also went to the food bank in Carlyle.

Customers are enjoying the newly renovated A&W in Carlyle.
