Shoebox Project - a mission for women in shelters

On Nov. 15 Salon 206 in Carlyle hosted a Customer Appreciation Night and asked anyone attending to bring a Shoebox full of goodies for the Shoebox Project.

After attending Creative Tables in Arcola this past October, we learned about the Shoebox Project which is a mission to provide Christmas presents for women in shelters. The numbers were shocking how many women in our province alone have ran to find safety at women’s shelters. This was a fun way to give back to woman in our own province and it’s comforting to know that we alone have collected well of 50 shoeboxes. This means 50 women will have something to smile about just from the donations of our own community. Salon 206 and Merit Ford will be collecting shoeboxes until Dec. 5. Stop into either one of our businesses to inquire what goes in a Shoebox. Thanks to everyone who has supported.

The devil is in the details; aka “The Teacup System” Submitted by Michele Amy Marion Biram’s kitchen table looked like a craft explosion had erupted. (This, frankly, is not unusual) But this time, her table was covered in an odd assortment of cardboard, pretty papers, her clothes iron, and a variety of glues.

As Marion is usually making something beautiful, I wasn’t’ too surprised, generally, though usually her skills lean a little more towards stunning paintings or cool ink stuff.

I had stopped over at her house for a visit between volunteer gigs last week. (Fiddle at the Lodge and Play rehearsal at the Theatre, to be exact!)

Turns out, this creative mess was actually in the process of becoming beautiful “gift envelopes” to sell during the United Church High Tea, hosted yearly at the Dickens’ Festival.

Apparently, the United Church was having another volunteer BEE. The High Tea and the adjacent bake sale is the major fundraiser for the Church for the year, and both are quite famous for the various work Bee’s which help to make them happen. Volunteers really do make the world go around!

Especially when it comes to the Carlyle Dickens Village Festival.

Now, to put things into perspective, for the duration of the Dickens weekend, I tend to get “stuck” in the Fezzywig’s pub with short forays into the street for food from vendors, or to enjoy the parade.

I mean, I don’t mind being stuck in the place with free live music and BEER, but still, I don’t

get much of a chance to see what else is going on around town.

I think I’m pretty typical of lots of people around Carlyle on this particular weekend.

Everybody seems to be busy volunteering in their “area of specialty”.

In fact, this is one of my favorite things about the Dickens festival.

Usually, year-round, different “groups” of people around town are pretty busy in their own hobbies, activities and events, and of course there is limited time in our lives, and therefore limited “mixing”between some groups of people.

But during Dickens, the CFY is busy decorating all the “Festival of Trees”, and the Lions club is busily manning their food booth, and The Catholic Church is dishing out thousands of cups of chowder, not to mention what the other groups like the Karate club, the Grad class, and the Rink board are doing, or the various businesses and service groups who are putting the final touches on their parade entries!

And me? Well, I’m generally kept pretty busy volunteering to man the sound system, or running the music events or working in the Bar, or getting ready to lead the band for the latest Cornerstone production.

So, I have to confess that I’ve never been able to make it to the United Church High Tea. Across her paperstrewn table, Marion told me a funny story about her own volunteering experience at the High Tea last year.

Apparently, one of the biggest difficulties at the High Tea is - get this - the MATCHING of the

cups and saucers! Sort of sounds like it could be a family feud game.

Marion told me that they serve so many people that although they use 225 cup and saucer sets during the High Tea, they must be repeatedly washed because they have so many “customers” and then they all have to be matched back up again.

And because the patterns are extremely intricate, finding the cup which matches the particular saucer is a tricky task!

So in 2017, Marion spent her entire shift simply matching cup to saucer as they came out of the dishwasher so they could be used again.

The plan had been to place numbers on each pair, but unfortunately, in the wash, many came off, and created quite the kerfuffle.

This year, Marion and Lynn Brady came up with another plan, which involved first removing the ragged remnants of last year’s numbers, and then carefully drying each of 450 items before placing a new number.

This number was then allowed to “cure” before being covered with protective filming. This was a process which took more than a full day to complete! Who would’ve guessed?

So then I asked her what people could expect when they went to the High Tea. Upon arrival at the United Church, guests are greeted by many lovely picture taking opportunities as the Church is all full of beautifully decorated trees.

The aisles of the chapel are filled with Christmas baking for purchase, and a slide show of Dickens Festivals Past is playing.

This year, guests can also indulge in some beautifully handcrafted giftenvelopes as well.

Upon entering the hall, guests are met by the talented Irene Doty, who has brought her collection of amazing handcrafted hats. In case a guest does not have a hat of their own, Irene will find the perfect one, which suits both personality (and head size) Provided by the Dickens’ committee, local Weyburn harpist, Sharon Elliott, plays beautiful seasonal music in the background as guests are led to your fancy table, set with the (hopefully matched) teacups and saucers.

“Tea” is served from traditional teapots by a veritable army of volunteers, and guests help themselves to the selection of home-made biscuits and preserves, cured Christmas pudding and sauce, fancy sandwiches and dainties galore.

This High Tea experience is interactive and traditional, and oh-sodelicious! And all provided for a small flat fee at the door.

When I ask about the complexities surrounding preparing for the High Tea, Lynn Brady says “We have a biscuit making bee, where we bake all of our biscuits.

And then we have another full day where we decorate the hall and set up and decorate all of the trees.“ But she says that “ The biggest difficulty we have is finding the 50 or so volunteers who are needed for the actual High Tea itself!”

Like many organizations, the United Church community is getting older, and volunteers are getting a bit pooped!

Rounding up 50 volunteers on such a busy weekend is tricky! But she assured me, “The volunteers don’t have to be from the United Church!

We accept anyone who wants to help out, and It’s a lot of fun.” She tells me that on the Friday when they get about 100 people at one time when the bus tours come in, that those moments can be a bit frantic!

But everyone is in such high spirits and is so happy to be here, that even those busy times are pretty enjoyable.

So here are some crazy High Tea factoids: 28 jars of Christmas pudding and 6 gallons of sauce are made in June to allow them 6 months to cure before the festival.

1036 biscuits were made this year (which totals over 15,540 over the length of the festival.

(They used over 10lbs of lard, 54 eggs and 25 lbs of flour!)

Last year, they ran shy of dainties, as they only had 160 tarts, and 12 11x17 trays! This year they are increasing the numbers.

And the TEA. The tea is made by infusion to ensure it does not get bitter. Judy Riddell reports that this is done by

taking 14 cups of loose Earl Grey tea leaves, and pouring over 112 cups of boiling water, and letting it steep for 10 minutes before straining it out. Then to make the tea, they combine 1 cup of infusion with 8 cups of water. This makes 896 CUPS OF TEA! In 2017 the High Tea served 558 people, and they can only serve 84 at a time. But when I commented that this was a LOT, Judy just laughed and said “The weekend goes really quickly!”

I mentioned to Lynn that maybe people don’t know that they could come and volunteer for a few shifts, so I said I’d add that into the article.

What a fun thing to do for teenagers, or any young person (or young at heart) for a few hours over the festival and to get into the Spirit of the Holiday. And hopefully your shift will not be spent in minute examination of hundreds of teacups, and you can report on whether the new “Teacup system” is working for 2018.

Kisbey Remembrance Day Ceremony 2018 Church bells in Kisbey tolled 100 times at sunset on Remembrance Day as part of the Bells of Peace ceremony held in hundreds of communities across Canada marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1.

The bells concluded the annual remembrance service attended by approximately sixty dignitaries and guests.

Comrade Nora Weightman of Kisbey Branch, Royal Canadian Legion chaired the proceedings and Sergeant-at-Arms John Vouture marshalled the parade led by the Rebekah Lodge colour party, followed by representatives of Carlyle and Kisbey branches of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Royal Can-

adian Mounted Police, the Royal Canadian Air Cadets Moose Mountain Squadron 723 and Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation.

Following the reading of the Honour Roll naming 34 young men from the Kisbey, Arcola and Pheasant Rump communities who were lost in World Wars I and II as well as Korea and Vietnam, Cannington MLA Dan D’Autremont delivered a moving presentation on his personal pilgrimage to a family member’s gravesite in Holland. Guest speaker Corporal Geremy Quiambao, Avionics Systems Technician with 431 Air Demonstration Squadron-Snowbirds in Moose Jaw offered his perspective on

We would specifically like to thank staff Sargeant Darren Simons for letting his staff help us, Jamie Barnett and Ryan Droziak for arresting people for us all day on their day off, all the arrestees for participating in the Jail ‘N Bail, the GFK school staff for letting us have it in the school, and the community for donating their money. We raised close to $9,000 which we will be putting towards our grad ceremony on May 25th, 2019. The extra money we will be donated within the community.

Kisbey held a Remembrance Day Service on Nov. 11 which was attended by approximately 60 dignitaries and guests.

Remembrance Day that included remembrance, reflection and service to others.

Spiritual observance was led by Reverend Koshy David with scripture readings by Kevin St. Jean and traditional hymns accompanied by Janelle David on piano.

Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Government of Canada, the Government of Saskatchewan, the Rural Municipality of Brock, the Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation and the Village of Kisbey, with additional contributions from local

businesses and individuals.

Honoured veterans in attendance were Al-

bert Hale and Clarence Hookenson who served during World War II, James McArthur who

served in the Korean War and Viet Nam and United Nations Peacekeeper John Vouture.

The bell rang in remembrance Submitted by Linda Aalbers At 5:10pm, November 11, 2018 the church bell from St Joseph’s Church in Manor, tolled out from the bell tower in the St Joseph’s cemetary 100 times; the Great Was was a deciding factor for two Europeon families to

leave their homeland for a better place to live, having suffered from enemy hand, lose of food for families and homes nearly destroyed.

The great hardships young families saw in Holland and Belgium they never wanted to see again. The Bax and

Layten families left Europe in May 1928 aboard the ship, Metagama for Halifax, Pier 21. On Sunday, November 11, 2018 the bells of St Joseph Church, which both families helped build in 1952 was rang by two of their grandchildren in memory of all who serviced and died.

With Remembrance Day looming, the Circle of Friends brought War Memories. There was no white material available for Freda’s wedding dress. It all went into parachutes. Gasoline, tea and sugar were rationed. Farmers like Fred were exempted from service to provide food for the world.

Grace remembered dances to raise money for soldiers packages.

Freda’s brother, George, landed in France and was killed there. Jessie’s brother drove tanks, and brought home a large bullet. No new care were made during the ware, and there was a price limit on used cars. Ralph had two friends overseas; one of whom saw the other killed. Ruth had 2 cousins killed. Marguerite’s brother, 22, was wounded, but survived.

There was great rejoicing when Japan surrendered but we failed to realize the horror of a city destroyed, and the radiation sickness that

followed.

Mary Thiesssen’s grandfather had been issued a tiny New Testament when he enlisted in WW1 in England. He carried it in his breast pocket, the bullet would have killed him but was deflected by the wee book. Bits of shrapnel surfaced in his arm years later.

Remembrance Day service was held in the Villa, with Charlotte Kovach, members of the Legion and Legion Auxilary. Our only veteran is Jim Clark of Fairlight.

He and Charloote joined us for dinner. Local people did not sign the guest book.

On November 6th the Dannevirke Ladies Quilting group from Redvers brought a display of the quilt they make for charity. One had been made by Grace Toms, a longtime member and now a resident here. They included Joan Stewart, Maxine Patron, Wendy Turton, Marle Pittet, Myrtle Chambers, Barbara Bo-

ese, Joan Fowler. “That was a full day.” Leora, “And I enjoyed every minute of it”.

Visitors for Aileen Belva’s birthday included: Evelyn Downer, Barry Adair and Joan Stewart. Joe and Shirley Blaise made their Sunday afternoon at the Villa.

Thank you to Photographer, Heather Ludlum, who began taking portraits of the Villa residents shortly after she began to work here 6 years ago. She has mounted them, as well as pictures of the Villa Staff, in a new album.

All have been named, something lacking in an earlier album.

Charlotte’s Saturday night move was “Touched by an Angel.”

Kolachurch brought us worship last night, with Harold and Florence Klassen, Harold and Cheryl Friesen, taking part. Aaron Dirksen played and sang. Kelvin Siemens, with his message on The Tongue spoke to our hearts.

If we build it, they will come: The building of a Dickens show Submitted by Michele Amy “But the band gets paid, right?” asked Laurie Fornwald. She and I were sitting in the new Kozina’s restaurant on Main Street, enjoying Pork adobo and chatting about the upcoming Cornerstone Production for the Dickens Festival in Carlyle. “It’s my favorite part of acting in a Cornerstone show, getting to sing with a live band.”

“Nope,” I replied.

“All volunteer.” Now this is pretty impressive when we look at the quality of the musicians in the pit band. But then again, none of the actors are paid either. Nor are the writers and the choreographers or the set designers or sound engineers.

Everyone contributes their time and talent. For free. For fun. Mostly.

“So, where does the money from the shows go?” is a common question. To put things in perspective, this is a pretty good question.

The Cornerstone Theatre production pretty much sells out 3 full showings each year.

Considering that is over 200 seats at $20 a pop, that would seem to be a lot of money. According to my calculator, at least $12,000. Wow. Seems like a lot!

First of all, there are some costs involved in staging a high-quality production. Microphones, sound equipment, lighting, projectors, equipment to build sets and to replace props, just to name a few. And then there are things like programs.

But Cornerstone Theatre is pretty frugal,

and we have talented people on board. Folks like Paul Twietmeyer, who volunteers countless hours building sets from scratch, repairing anything which breaks and creatively solving complex issues without going to “buy new stuff”.

People like Don Carter who maintains and builds the web page and organized the program printing.

But let’s start at the beginning. How does this all get put together?

The Dickens show usually stars in July, or May. Or February. When one of the theatre gang is brave enough to ask the question, “So, what are we going to do for Dickens THIS year?”

To be fair, Cornerstone Theatre (led by Dianne and Paul Twietmeyer) has been re-inventing the Christmas Carol storyline for 15 years. The first few years were easy! Lots of plays have been written, and there were many to choose from. But then, they ran out.

Some plays have been written while on group holidays in Mexico. Some have been written at Rider’s games, others have been adapted from versions we have admired. Doug Waldner has written several, as have Dianne and Samantha Twietmeyer This latest production involved Dianne Twietmeyer getting the idea that we should have a fully “from scratch” production, which was original and addressed what we have often discussed over . . . let’s say . . . beverages of our choice. By now, we all have a deep familiarity with the original Christ-

mas Carol, by Charles Dickens.

And the more familiar you become with something, the more nuances become visible, which make for some good “discussions.’

So Dianne set out to write a completely different version, including all brand new music.

What a treat! (We really like NEW) Sometime in September, the cast is assembled, and somebody has to volunteer to direct.

Dianne in particular makes herculean efforts to search out new talent within the community, and to invite them to join the Cornerstone group.

Which is really just a club of people who happen to like theatre, music, each other, hanging out, good food, great conversations. (not in any particular order).

The group of likely suspects gets together, and auditions for roles they might like to play this year.

Whoever is directing this year (in 2018 it’s Dianne and Jesse Twietmeyer) makes up a production schedule and we get into rehearsals.

The show needs to be cast, people need to learn their lines, to become familiar with the music and work on choreography. Blocking needs to occur. Props need to be assembled and costuming created.

The band leader and practice musician (often Michele Amy) comes along to each rehearsal and gets the music organized, chooses keys, figures out cues and works with the actors and directors.

This goes on from September to November, twice weekly, and countless hours of rehearsals, until about a month out of performance, when the band comes into play.

And that means that the sound man needs to be on board (usually Will Elliott) as the band needs full sound set up to work with the actors.

By now, the choreography has been worked out, and the actors hopefully know their songs, music rehearsals are scheduled, and full production work goes ahead.

Paul gets artists like Marylin Carter and Marion Biram on board to come and build and to paint the sets. This is a big job, as the sets he designs are works of art, both elaborate and complex.

Jesse usually gets the filming work completed and edited,and starts working on sound recording and light cues used in the production.

Somewhere in there, programs are designed and sent to printers, Don Carter gets all the

ticket sales underway.

The theatre gets cleaned. Stuff gets fixed.

Theatre members hang out in the green room after rehearsals and have a bunch of good laughs.

We create some programming for the Lions’ Provincial assembly.

Fun is had. Tickets are sold. Almost always the tickets are sold out.

But the band does not get paid; and neither does anybody else.

Cornerstone is a non-profit, so each year at our meeting we decide where our funds are going to be spent.

This year, the group decided that a percentage of all ticket sales would be donated to the local food bank.

Then after Dickens, we decide upon what repairs and renovations to the Memorial Hall and Theatre facility might be practical.

In the past, funds have gone towards: the projector, the seats in the hall, new bathroom renovations, the new flooring in the Hall, the bar renovation, the kitchen renovation, new

bathrooms in the Hall, the new furnace, air conditioner, ductwork.

But each project involves another bunch of volunteer hours. And the cycle goes around again.

So why do it at all?

Some people play hockey. Some people play golf. Some people curl. Some people make theatre. Some people make music!

Community members volunteer in their own ways at the schools, the hockey rink, the golf course, the curling rink, the pool, in service clubs like the Lions who maintain the ball diamonds (etc) on The Dickens Committee, and in the Memorial Hall and Theatre and in so many other places around town.

It’s part of what makes living in a community so awesome.

And part of what makes the Carlyle Dickens Village festival is watching all of these volunteers and organizations come together to create something unique each December.

The hotel was built in 1909. It was a draw to the community of Alameda and was frequented by many hungry and thirsty folk. Even Al

Capone would stop in the day, on his journeys between Chicago and Moose Jaw. The hotel was famous or infamous for many things! The most memorable feature would have been the grand bar that was built in Minneapolis and installed in 1911. It hosted live

bands and even operated as a strip club.

In the final years it would have been most famous for its wing nights and cinnamon buns.

I am sure if it could speak, it would thank all those that patronized and everyone who worked to keep the lights on.

RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons We were in Red Serge numerous times attending Remembrance Day Services throughout our Detachment area. Members attended Services at the schools in Redvers, Manor, Carlyle, Arcola and Wawota and then on Remembrance Day itself we attended Arcola, Wawota, Kenosee, Kisbey, and Carlyle. In Carlyle we were also joined by Bombardier EATON of the Royal Canadian Artillery and Master Corporal LOBO of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, both whom are stationed in Shilo. It sure was nice to have serving members of our Military join us.

Bombardier EATON has family in Carlyle and our Sergeant at Arms appreciated having someone from his former Regiment attend.

We had some mailboxes broken into, however, nothing was apparently taken and we have no clues or suspects at this time.

We also had a break and enter in the rural area of Wauchope reported. This is still under investigation.

We had one individual that came home intoxicated, and began yelling at his other half.

An argument ensued and apparently the dog was kicked. Due to lack of cooperation we were unable to lay charges, that said if that dog ever bites the foot that kicked it . . . well we can’t charge the dog.

It appears that we have many people forget that they can not pass on a solid line. This is in itself dangerous to the offender as well as those going the other way.

My question is always.

So a driver was driving down the road and

their truck was observed moving back and forth in the lane. When the truck went past the police vehicle going in the opposite direction the Member observed a cell phone being held against the head of the driver.

The driver tried making an excuse stating they were using it for music, which unfortunately is still illegal. $280 fine.

We are having problems with people doing donuts in the Lions Park. I know “Donuts” and “Police Officers” usually go well together, but these are donuts in a vehicle causing damage to the park. We caught one young driver and provided them a warning.

We attended a False Alarm in the Carlyle area. Well it was not really “False” being that someone opened the door and set the alarm off. So it was not a Crime but was a, well, we will stick with “False Alarm” We are investigating a former employee from the Gravelbourg area using a company credit card in our area. As much as you think your old employer owes you, don’t be taking a fuel or credit card. This individual is facing charges of theft, obtain credit by fraud and possession of stolen property.

We seem to re-visit things throughout the year. For those of you who have read the report before, well, the family farm where the family does not get along. They still do not get along and now we are dealing with an alleged theft of over $100,000.00 in grain.

There has to be a better way to deal with this than involve the Police, however, it does not look like this will happen.

An intoxicated individual was observed leaving the Casino and staff were concerned that he may drive and they immediately called the RCMP. We happened to have a Member in the area and located this individual trying to

get into someone else’s vehicle. The individual chose to not co-operate with the Member and a struggle ensued with “Pepper Spray” being deployed. This enabled our member to quickly complete the arrest and place him into custody.

This individual chose to remain combative and was subsequently charged with resisting arrest. I have been doing this job for more years than I care to admit, however, it has always been my experience that “Cooperation” goes a long way. If you choose to not cooperate you will find it counter productive.

We issued a $200 liquor ticket to an individual that was intoxicated in Town during the middle of the day.

We had a couple files involving the Mental Health Act. Members responded and calmed both situations down.

We had a “mother/ daughter” dispute which resulted in a broken window, however, no charges.

An individual was found to be sleeping in the hospital and was asked to leave by staff and he left. This individual has become quite familiar with the Police as of late. He tends to wander, has no place to live and he has come to the attention of Estevan Police Service, Estevan RCMP and Carlyle RCMP. Unfortunately a non policing issue has become a policing issue.

hiking to Regina and was offered a ride by one of our Members. Let us just say I can’t publish what he said or inferred but, well the Member went on his way without the individual.

We had a landlord that had a tenant skip town. He left behind some pills and we attended and subsequently brought them to our local Pharmacy for disposal. They were likely supplements or vitamins but why take the chance.

Unfortunately the landlord had a mess to clean up and is missing some rent, but our community is better off without this individual around. Unfortunately our gain will be someone else’s loss.

As always we find people without Registration/Insurance $580, those that choose not to stop at stop signs $230, no seatbelt $175, use or manipulate a cell phone $280, and speeders, with the most expensive ticket being $296 Warnings and Inspection notices were issued for inadequate windshield, obstructed windshield (please use a scraper or snow brush), speeding, use licence plate on wrong vehicle, obstructed licence plate, fail to wear seatbelt, inadequate day time running lights, stop sign, window tint and inadequate tail lights.

We had three collisions with deer, with Members having to attend and shoot the one deer to stop it from suf-

fering.

Members also dealt with a couple of “well being checks” This can be a variety of situations such as checking on stranded motorists, confirming someone has heat and nourishment. Well, all kinds of calls fall under

this category.

We wish to remind everyone to be aware of road conditions this time of year. It does not take long for roads to become icy and slippery.

Please slow down and drive safe.

RMs must keep pace with change

By Murray Mandryk When you think about it, some of the challenges facing Saskatchewan rural municipalities are similar to the challenges facing agriculture as a whole.

Farming has become a science, requiring significant attention paid to managing water resources, fertilizers and chemicals, machinery, fuel, crop selection and rotation and seemingly infinite list of smaller details that won’t necessarily guarantee crop production, anyway.

And after all that, no money is made until your cereal, pulse or oilseed crops are properly marketed.

While it may be what producers wanted, there can be no doubt that it’s added to the complexity of today’s modern producer.

However, one big difference between today’s farmers and today’s RM is how the size of their respective operations have and haven’t changed.

For farmers, it’s all about learning how to manage more acres to allow their operations to remain viable.

But for reeves and rural municipal councillors, the size of RMs hasn’t changed because few RMs have gotten bigger through amalgamations in their 100-plus years of existence.

One might assume that would make the job of managing RMs less complicated.

Fewer farmers in each RM because of larger farms should mean less conflict between farmers over things like whose grid road gets gravelled or ploughed first.

But while some may still subscribe to the old cliché of RM administration being all about gravel and gopher poison, it’s gotten considerably more complicated than that.

Today’s RM reeves and councillors must deal with complicated environmental and drainage laws and regulations.

Moreover, larger scale farming operations are often the exact ones being blamed, fairly or unfairly, as the source of such newfound environmental, and drainage problems. Keeping up with legislation and governance changes and arbitrating disputes is an increasingly complicated problem for today’s reeves and councillors.

But it’s getting even more complex then that.

For example, recent stories about the collapsed bridge in RM of Clayton or ammonia levels in the water in the hamlet of Lone Rock and the RM of Wilton speak to the added complexity And it’s now always physically identifiable problems in play.

There have been an increasing number of cases of personnel related issues impacting rural governance involving today’s expected standards of conduct. In other words, bullying and harassment are very real things in today’s workplaces, as a few local RM councillors are now discovering.

Even if these incidents are isolated, they represent the added complexities facing today’s local politicians.

But this may be just the beginning when it comes to the changing face of some rural municipalities.

Consider what’s going in RM of McKillop that has been under supervision since September after Government Relations Minister Warren Kaeding appointed in September a supervisor to oversee massive administrative and democratic issues in the RM. The reason for the need for supervision has to do with significant financial problems, culminating with a proposed 130-per-cent tax increase to deal with the problems.

There are clearly questionable spending decisions now under examination, but the issue boils down to the growth in cottage property, the need to properly service these property owners and the unwillingness of existing RM council to address the specific concerns of these newer ratepayers.

Cottage owners on Last Mountain Lake are mostly located in McKillop’s Division 4. The ratepayers say 54 per cent of the eligible voters are in Division 4, compared with four, four, six, 14 and 18 per cent of the voters in the other divisions, respectively.

Yet even after a 73-per-cent resolution vote in favour of changing the boundaries existing McKillop council chose to pass a resolution to hold public meetings on the matter.

Among the many new realities for municipalities is a rather old one. Every vote should count, especially in today’s rural municipalities where things are changing and challenges are mounting.

At the end of the line How long would you stand in line to meet a celebrity, to check out the latest thrill ride, or buy the newest iPhone? Would any amount of time be warranted?

It’s funny what we’ll stand in line for. Or what we won’t.

More interesting yet is our attitude toward the line-up. Temperaments tend to be quite difShelley Luedtke ferent depending on what awaits us at the end. When Cedar Point Amusement Park unveiled its first winged roller coaster people waited four hours for the two-minute thrill. Yet some supermarkets feel compelled to post signs assuring customers they will have sufficient check-outs open so shoppers won’t have to wait.

While some Americans were willing to stand as long as it took to vote during the midterms, others said any line that stretched outside a building was a deterrent. I couldn’t help but think back a few weeks earlier when line-ups stretched for blocks and blocks as people waited to purchase lottery tickets on jackpots that soared to new heights.

There are many things I have willingly stood in line for: theme park attractions, concerts, busy restaurants, and to vote. But at the end of each of those lines something was waiting for me—something I had chosen to do. I have never had to wait in line for… survival.

My husband and I got to know an older couple from Eastern Europe who shared stories describing their lives before and after a revolution that ousted a dictator. We were humbled by how different our lives were in North America. Viorel was a retired engineer who also played violin with the national orchestra. I found it fascinating talking to a man who spent his professional life in such an analytical and technical career, who also spoke with such passion as he took us past the concert hall where he

had performed the masterpieces of classical music.

Even though he and his wife were better off than many others, he spoke of the lines in which he had stood to get bread for his family. Every morning he left very early, while his family slept, so he could move through the line before the supply ran out. He had known scarcity and hunger, and those line-ups were a necessity for survival. Even years after the revolution, and when the supply was more plentiful, he continued this long-established custom of leaving his home in the early morning so he could bring home some food.

The line-ups most of us find ourselves in are by choice: to snag tickets for an event, to clear security at a public venue, to be amongst the first to take advantage of a great bargain. But imagine standing in line for food rations--or water. Questioning if there will be enough by the time you get to the front. The waiting is one thing. The wondering is the other.

Wondering when the supply will run out. Wondering if you and your family will be without.

Two men are waiting. Waiting in two very different lines. Both are fathers. Both have one thing on their mind—feeding their families. One is standing with his wife and children in a restaurant wondering why it is taking so long to be seated. The other is standing alone, having left his wife and children at what now passes for shelter. He has walked many miles to a food distribution center. The longer the first man waits the more irritated he gets and says he won’t be leaving much of a tip. The longer the second waits the more worried he is the aid truck will run out of rice.

The difference between lining up to be entertained or to shop versus lining up for the basics of survival is profound. The next time we find ourselves in a long or slow moving line we can maybe take a moment and ponder its significance. Instead of impatience we could find ourselves saying, “This is a line-up I am so lucky to be in.”

Managing Your Money: Peak earnings at last! The pluses and pitfalls You’ve worked hard for 20 or so years and now you’re very likely right in your earnings sweet spot: these are your peak earnings years. Not only has your income increased, your finances are steadily improving. Now is the time to secure your long-term financial future – and, even though it’s somewhere down the road, the retirement of your dreams -- by making the most of your peak earnings years. Here are some tips for doing just that: Pay off debt Apply some of your “extra money” to paying down your mortgage and other debts. Becoming debt free is good!

Build for retirement - Develop an effective investment portfolio and apply an ever-increasing amount of your income to your portfolio and other vehicles for retirement

savings, such as registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) and tax-free savings accounts (TFSAs). By investing early in RRSPs, for example, you maximize the magic of compounding – and by making your maximum RRSP contribution each year, you’ll also maximize your tax savings.

And speaking of savings: Statistics Canada finds that one in three Canadian adults are not preparing financially for retirement*. If that’s you, now is the time to improve your savings strategy.

Identify your priorities Your income has never been this good and that can get you thinking about realizing some dreams – like buying a larger home or purchasing a cottage, a new vehicle or a boat – but beware of spending too much now at the expense of your retirement years.

Paws & Claws

Instead of rushing to realize all your dreams at once, identify your priorities and budget realistically to achieve them without compromising your future.

Support your kids – economically It’s tougher these days for young people to become financially independent. You’ll probably have to help your kids with tuition and other forms of financial support, perhaps for several years beyond college or university, while they get established in their careers. A registered education savings plan (RESP) is a good way to rein in the rising costs of a postsecondary education. And investing a few dollars each earnings period in a fund for “kids’ support” is a good idea, too.

Support your parents – maybe You’re a member of the “sandwich generation” and, as such, you could find

yourself not only supporting your kids but also aging parents. Include that possibility in your budgeting decisions.

Plan to retire - You may intend to work well beyond the ‘usual’ age for retirement or, like a growing number of Canadians, you may be aiming at early retirement. Either way, make sure you have a plan in place that will get you there in financial comfort.

And one final tip: To make the most of your peak earning years (and all your other years) talk to a professional advisor about the

best financial plan for your situation.

Five holiday hazards: is your pet safe?

Did you know that the holidays are the time of year when pets are most at risk of chewing or ingesting things that can harm them? Being conscious of the following five hazards will help you protect your own four-legged companions from poisoning, burns and other potential health complications.

1. Decorations A cat will go to great lengths to get its paws on an object it’s drawn to. This might be a LED light, a hooked ornament or tinsel. To keep your animal from swallowing such objects, place them as high up on the Christmas tree as possible, or better yet, opt for safer decorations.

2. Electric wires Both dogs and cats, especially when they’re young, like to chew on things that lie on the floor. Prevent potential burns and electrocutions by blocking access to cords. Alternatively, deter your pet from chewing on them by applying an unpleasant-tasting substance like bitter apple spray.

Also, be sure to unplug devices when they’re not in use.

3. Decorative Plants When swallowed or ingested, certain popular holiday plants can cause serious health re-

percussions or even death.

The most dangerous plants for your pets are poinsettias, lilies, Jerusalem cherries, yew, mistletoe and holly.

4. Food Chocolate, nuts, garlic, onions, grapes and raisins can make your animal very sick.

Equally toxic are xylitol — notably found in sugar-free gum — and uncooked dough containing yeast. In addition, you should avoid giving your pets table scraps. Foods like turkey, ham and meat pie are too salty and poultry bones can puncture the esophagus.

5. Liquids If alcohol is ingested by your four-legged companion, health complications can arise — even if it’s merely an ingredient in a dessert or a sauce. Essential oils are also problematic. When diffused into the air, these products can cause your animal to have convulsions and respiratory problems.

This Christmas, avoid putting your pet in jeopardy.

Take the above precautions and you’ll ensure your furriest family members have a merry and safe holiday.

A friendly reminder from your local RCMP: Some tips for closing your cottage for the season Make sure everything is locked and secure: An open door or window can make it easy for someone to break in.

Consider alarm systems, displaying alarm stickers, trail or surveillance cameras, fake cameras, and motion sensor lights and alarms.

Remove all valuables before you leave your cabin, including any alcohol, money, tools and electronics. Keep any valuables you leave out of sight.

Engrave items you plan to leave behind with something personal, and whenever possible record the make, model and serial number of your items.

Make connections: have someone check on your

cottage for general maintenance, snow removal and to check for any signs of a break-in. Ask a neighbour or hire a private company to monitor this.

Consider other ways to block an intruder: use door or window security bars, leave a key with a neighbour and not outside your home, and don’t leave objects by windows that are large enough to climb through.

desperate need of cash when Seeman arrived in the scene with a ready supply of cash which allowed him to buy title to 80,000 acres (125 sections) of railway land for $80,000. That was a huge investment for the time period. The proceeds from the land sale enabled the railway to continue operations for several years, and Seeman acquired land along the M&NWR line between Winnipeg and Yorkton. He would resell most of the land but on a portion near what would become Theodore he started a sizeable farm of his own.

“The first report of Seeman’s crop-growing successes occurred near the end of the first year the Seeman farm was in operation and stated that, from two relatively small stacks of sheaves, the Seeman farm had realized 1200 bushels of grain. Another report from the following year stated that “Mr. Seeman expects a total yield of wheat, oats and barley of forty thousand bushels.” Seeman’s expecta-

tions were fulfilled. Oats yielded 106 bushels per acre that year. Because there was insufficient granary space on the farm to accommodate the threshed grain, the sheaves were left in a stack and threshed as needed during the winter,” wrote Neil Gregory, Saskatchewan History magazine.

As Frederickson recounted some of the history of the Seeman farm, the background that inspired him to recreate the scale model of the family home, it made me think about the scale of some of the earliest Prairie farmers.

We tend to have a few of the Prairies being divvied-up to immigrants in near 160-acre homestead parcels. That was certainly how my own grandparents started their lives in Canada after immigrating from England at what is now the Czech Republic depending on which root of my family tree you follow.

But there were also what can only be described as mega-farms,

at least in relation to the era.

Perhaps the most famous is the Bell farm at Indian Head, marked today by the reconstructed round barn and the historic site it is part of.

“Construction of the Bell Farm started in 1882, under the direction of A. J. Osment.

Within a year over 100 buildings were constructed on this corporate farm, which included about 53,000 acres (or 332 quarter sections),” notes www. bellbarn.ca While a couple of decades later, the Motherwell homestead, itself a national historic site is another peek into the scale of farming in this region’s earliest days.

We tend to think of large scale farming as a relatively new trend, but as in most things it is a matter of perspective, and from the earliest days of the Prairies some have sought to grow their operations to scales beyond the average. It just seems a part of our heritage that has been lost to time.

Tiger vs Phil: Did anybody really care?

Chances are good that you’re $19.95 wealthier today because you didn’t plunk down that amount to watch the Tiger-vs.-Phil payper-view golf extravaganza — “The Match” — on the Friday of the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend.

Call it what you want, but in my book it was the

Friday Folly.

This is being written a few days before the 18-hole event in Las Vegas with $9 million scheduled to go to the winner, but it would be a surprise if the pay-perview telecast generated $9 million in revenues.

This has to go down as the ultimate ‘Who Cares?’ event.

Tiger Woods is the biggest draw in golf, and his presence on the PGA Tour undoubtedly hikes ratings; viewing numbers skyrocket when he’s in contention.

Phil Mickelson has been a big name in the game for the past 25

years, but the narrative of this event shouldn’t have been a battle between two titans but a blast from the past — the Has Been (Mickelson) vs. the Best Player Ever (Woods, 10-15 years ago).

Any golf fan worth his sleeve of Titleists has seen far more of Woods and Mickelson than they’d ever want.

The networks key on the two of them when they’re in competition, no matter their position in the field. It’s certainly understandable the networks go overboard on Tiger airtime, but it’s hard to believe

too many people would spend $19.99 to see the two of them play when they’re visible in excessive amounts for free 12 months of the year.

Youth has taken over golf — Rory, Justin, Jon, Dustin, Rickie, Jason, Bryson, Jordan (last names not needed for the true golf fan) — yet the pay-per-view event features two guys in their 40s. Woods is still relevant — in fact, his comeback situation is one of the sport’s most intriguing stories — but Mickelson’s best days were about five years ago. Initiation Cougars host annual tournament

On the weekend of Nov. 17 and 18, the Carlyle Initiation Cougars hosted their tournament. A lot of hard work was put in by the players, coaches and parents to make this tournament run as fun and smoothly as it did. Each team played 4 games. First games, first goals and first fights were seen this weekend, and through it all many smiles and laughs were under those helmets, in the dressing rooms and on the stands. Teams came from Estevan and Weyburn.

There was a huck-a-puck challenge and a prize-draw table for the players and siblings.

WOMEN ON THE GO Bus Tour

On Saturday, Nov. 17, The Women On The Go bus tour made its way to Carlyle for a day and evening of shopping. The tour is put on through an organization called Women on The Go. Cheryl Hughes of Balcarres is the lady who organizes it all, with usually around 55 ladies per bus. They board in Regina at 8 a.m. and hit various communities including Montmartre, Kipling, Wawota and Carlyle. When they arrive in Carlyle, Ken from King’s Dept. Store, Shannon from The Bargain Shop and Michael from Michael’s Coffee Shop, get on the bus and welcome the ladies, while letting them know what deals are in store for them. Micheal’s Coffee Shop also hosts the ladies, feeding them lunch or supper. Many of the ladies have been coming for years and they absolutely love it!

On Thursday, November 8 the Alida Lions Club held their Senior Supper at the Alida Hall. There was a good turnout for this event and it was great to see familiar faces of those who had returned back to Alida. Yvonne Dzuba and Glennis Peterson had made it back from Weyburn and of course there were others from Carlyle, Carnduff and Redvers. It is always great to renew acquaintances and friendships with everyone. Keep up the great work fella – it was delicious and is much appreciated.

On Nov. 10 Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan visited with the Nilsen family in Minot before returning home on Nov. 11.

Pierre and Brenda Boutin and Marcia Gervais travelled to Brandon on Nov. 11 to meet the Orsted family, Gorman and Anita Orsted, Joanne Orsted, Ken and Debby Forsyth for supper and to celebrate Pierre and Brenda’s 40th Wedding Anniversary.

Congratulations Pierre and Brenda, may you celebrate many more.

Gary and Brenda Junk spent a week (November 7-14) visiting with their family at Sylvan Lake, AB and enjoyed watching the grandsons, Jaxon and Jace play hockey with each of their teams.

Betty-Jo DeJong, Lashburn, SK visited with her parents Bob and Cecille Harrison for a few days (November 15-22). While here she also participated

in the annual Craft/Trade Show on Nov. 18.

Also visiting with Bob and Cecille Harrison on Nov. 18 were Bob’s sisters Betty Wanhella, Marie Neff and her family. They also visited with their brother Harvey Harrison.

Visiting with Dale and Linda Potapinski over the weekend were son, Barry and Tam Potapinski and granddaughters Claire and Lylah (Winnipeg). They also visited with other family members in the area and also attended the Craft/Trade Show on Sunday.

The Alida Rec. Board hosted the annual Craft/ Trade Show at Alida Hall on Nov. 18 with 21 vendors participating. The doors opened at 8:00 am and the event began around 10 o’clock. There were approximately 75 visitors who attended this event touring among the vendors and purchasing many different items whither it was for themselves or as Christmas presents. What an excellent opportunity to get some of those hard to find gifts. There was an excellent turnout for the noontime meal which saw approximately 85 meals being served and enjoyed.

The menu featured a Turkey dinner, a Beef dinner or a choice of three soups, Potato, Bean/Ham, Pea soup with a Beef bun or Turkey bun. Dessert was also included. Delicious food as always ladies, may you keep up the good work. Near the end of the event the door prizes which were donated by some of the

A group of friends namely Nolan and Kendra Murray, Joel and Sam Carpenter, Amy and Ben Brown and Tom and Cayley Hamilton spent several days on a trip to U.S.A. They toured Graceland in Memphis and continued on to Nashville for the remaining time.

Sympathy to the family and friends on the passing of Tyler Rogers. He passed away at his farm on Nov. 9 at the age of 32 years. His funeral service was held at the Wawota Town Hall on Nov. 18.

While the grass grows the steed may starve We share a universal fear about our eternal salvation. What will it be like after we die? How do we live in good conscience with the anxiety of not knowing? And where do we find a blue print for living or action as we ponder the morality of our behaviour?

The proverb in our title was somewhat “musty” to Hamlet as he agonized over his revenge assignment. He realized he might never become King unless he did something about Claudius, if it was not too late already.

As we battle with the devil and wait for conversion and God’s Grace, do we fear our souls may starve? How do we know if our present path is the course to follow? How do we keep on making choices in life even when the morality and the outcome are unclear?

Faith is the path to freedom! Our freedom is found in the Lord God: “Do not be afraid, I have redeemed you!” (Isaiah 43:1).

I challenge the reader to a close encounter with God in the convent room Jesus asked St Teresa of

Avila to build. The room is dedicated to St Joseph who guards one door. The other door is the entrance to heaven and Mary is there, and in the room is Jesus. This is a meeting between you and Jesus.

In the bible stories we see what happens when Jesus meets with sinners. In the encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well Jesus breaks three Jewish customs. He speaks to a Samaritan, to a woman, and he asks her for water from her cup or jar. In return he offers her living water.

Now back to our meeting with Jesus in this metaphorical meditation room. The first thing you will notice is that it is easier than you thought. Jesus breaks the rules to set us free. Just put your head on God’s shoulder and peace will come. You will notice that you are going to change.

Talk to God about your needs. If you need to forgive someone, help is there. If you are struggling with tough decisions, inspirational grace will come.

If you have been avoiding God on Sundays, often a big problem, peace will be yours.

God offers us a litany of success to balance our list of failures. When we have sinned, we can put our heads on the shoulder of Jesus and feel his arm around us. Christ is always inviting us. He breaks the rules to set us free!

And we can live our lives without fear. More than 365 times in the bible God says do not be afraid. Our Faith commitment will lead us on a sure path. Like Job, we can be absolutely sure.

“Ah, that these words of mine were written down… were inscribed on some monument with an iron chisel and engraving tool, cut into the rock for ever! This I know that my Avenger [Redeemer] lives, and He… will take his stand on earth…. And from my flesh I shall look on God.” (Job 19:1-29)

Exactly the right word

By Linda Wegner Since I formally semi-retired from my writing career, I’ve developed a genuine enjoyment of doing crossword puzzles. Where I formerly used my pen and pencil to jot down notes for stories, articles or research work, I now keep a pencil, eraser and game book close by. I’m not sure why I rarely do other types of posers but the thrill of finding exactly the right word to fit into the right space intrigues me. Beginner versions of the game are easier but as the level of difficulty increases, so do the options. For example, a clue might read “dry” and two options

immediately come to mind: arid or sere. My next move? Check out words going in the opposite direction – which of my initial choices would fit in with that or those words? For you veterans of the game, that’s a no-brainer but it was a skill that I had to learn.

That was one of the easier obstacles; the greatest are those few spaces where absolutely nothing fits. Paper, worn nearly through with erasures, and my brain, weary from trying to find or make up a word, testify to the difficulty of some of those puzzles close to the end of the book. In frustration I

often set the thing aside, go on to another then return the next day. Sadly, I usually end up looking up the answer, only to discover a word I’d never heard of in my life or one so obvious that I groan.

What’s this to do with life or God? Everything! We can’t figure out all life’s mysteries, have no solutions to “spaces” that we simply don’t understand.

The Christian’s strength and hope is in the faithfulness and the wisdom of God. “Let him trust in the name of the Lord and rely upon his God.” Isaiah 50:10.
