From Front page - Philippine cooking class Kelly Johnson The Observer On Thursday, November 14 the Southeast Regional Library presented the first of two Philippine cooking classes at the Carlyle Memorial Hall.

The first night was attended by 13 participants, who proved that; “too many cooks do not spoil the broth”!

Kristina Villeta and Rosales Busog were the head cooks and were assisted by Richel Subere and Sarah Villamar.

They demonstrated how to make two of the main dishes that you would find served in the Philippines.

Pansit is a dish that consists of a thin noodle, vegetables and a choice of meat cooked in a chicken broth. The ingredients are combined in a large pot and the delicious Philippine staple is ready to eat in under 20 minutes cooking time. It is dished up with a squeeze of lemon.

Mmmm!

The second dish is lumpia, which is a spring roll that consists of a choice of meat [chicken, pork, or beef] mushrooms and vegetables.

The ingredients, which vary from one cook to another, are rolled up in a pastry wrapper and then deep-fried. The finished product is then served with a sweet chili dipping sauce.

Once everything was dished up all those attending sat down for a delicious meal. Sorry, no leftovers.

Several opinions of the meal were offered up; Lori Wyatt’s take was “fabtabulous” and Michelle Orsted offered “absolutely fantastic”.

James Dormuth added that it was a “real great experience and a lot of fun”.

Jen Sydor, the Souteast Regional librarian responsible for organizing the evening, felt “it

turned out fabulously, the community is graced by this cultural opportunity”.

Kristina Villeta was extremely pleased hosting the class. She

commented, “everyone enjoyed it and hopes some will try cooking it at home.”

The second class will be held Nov. 28 and all available spots are filled.

Collins says this gives members better understanding, control and influence.

“Sometimes it’s too much detail, but at the end of the day, people don’t want some mysterious ‘trust me’ structure—they want to know what’s going on.”

Fixing country required more patience; less politics

By Murray Mandryk This is an exhausting country.

It’s exhausting enough travelling the extent of this vast nation, let alone traversing the vast array of issues that you will encounter at every stop.

But if you believe this country is worth it, and, notwithstanding those who pushing the wexit agenda, most of us still do, the only way to fix it is tirelessly work at it.

The disheartening thing right now is there is a growing sense that we can’t, don’t want to or won’t do that any more.

And that’s not necessarily coming from a few loudmouths on coffee row or at the end of the bar.

That message, at least indirectly or subconsciously, is coming from the politicians themselves.

It’s certainly the message that Westerners have been getting from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Office for some time now. This, after all, was the very thing that produced the legitimate feelings of alienation and the illegitimate nonsense talk of separation.

And what’s truly maddening is the seeming unwillingness for those in Central Canada, and especially those in Ottawa and the PMO, to ignore Western frustrations.

While it’s exceedingly difficult to believe that Trudeau or any national leader would deliberately put forth policies with the sole objective of enhancing their electability in one reason over the other, it sure does seem to happen.

The equalization formula is likely a perfect example of that, although its complexity makes it difficult to categorize it as political tool.

Besides supposedly helping out the legitimate “have-nots”, generally, Maritime provinces not blessed with a whole lot of non-renewable resource development, Manitoba and Quebec have been perennial equalization recipients.

That’s because of the fundamental nature of the formula many see as a flawed: it punishes both provinces drawing wealth from their natural resource riches and those provinces who keep their tax load low by subsidizing their government’s revenue with those resource riches.

As such, one can certainly be frustrated that the lion’s share of $19.8 billion dollar equalization pool goes to Quebec that taxes high, has hydro electric wealth that is “renewable” and not subject to the formula and isn’t developing its non-renewable resources to substitute for its high taxes.

Contrary to the belief of some, it isn’t provincial money going into the pool, it’s federal tax dollars.

But those tax dollars do come from residents of places like Alberta and Saskatchewan who pay federal income tax and haven’t benefited from equalization of late.

(It’s worth noting that Saskatchewan did draw from the equalization pool in every year but one from its inception in 1957 to 1980. Even Alberta drew from the equalization pool from 1957 to 1964.)

The point here is, that equalization is complicated mess that can’t or won’t be fixed overnight.

This is important to understand in the context of Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe going to Ottawa last week saying he heard nothing from Trudeau that suggested things can change.

One of things Moe asked Trudeau for, besides the re-evaluating Saskatchewan’s climate change plan and putting a one-year pause of carbon tax, is a call to adjust “the inequitable equalization formula.”

Unfortunately, equalization is much like the country itself, huge, flawed and not easy to fix.

This is why it didn’t get fixed a decade ago under the Stephen Harper Conservative government, who ran in 2006 under a platform of removing nonrenewable resources from the equalization formula, but dropped it because they’d lose support in support.

Yet while premier Brad Wall wholeheartedly endorsed Harper’s change and abandoned this issue for a decade, Moe now wants to see change after one 50-minute decade.

Yes, need to be fixed. But we to still need patience to fix them our problems.

Satisfying more than a sweet tooth It was time to go through the book shelf and pull titles I was willing to part with. The trouble was I found it easy to talk myself out of getting rid of most of them, convinced it was a book I would read again. Every year mountains of new books are published and although it’s exciting to think of what might be coming next, it My Outlook is also frustrating to think how Shelley Luedtke many great ones I will inevitably miss out on. I have what I describe as a craving for reading.

In my first year of university I became good friends with a girl from Richmond, Virginia. Since she was attending school in Canada she celebrated Thanksgiving in October with the rest of us and said she quite liked it, in contrast to how she grew up with Thanksgiving and Christmas just four weeks apart. I remember her laughing and remarking that we actually had time in Canada to finish the Thanksgiving leftovers before going out and getting a Christmas tree.

My family did something a bit different at Thanksgiving this year—we changed up the menu. It seemed like a good idea in the days leading up to the weekend, but when the day arrived it didn’t seem so great. The cornucopia and autumn decorations were up and we gathered the usual people around the table. But when we brought the food out I realized how much my brain was trained to expect turkey and family favorites. The other food was good, but my taste buds had expectations all their own.

In the next few weeks my kitchen will be the setting for putting together some cherished recipes, including ones I really missed in October. I can already feel the cravings start to build. But there’s a craving for something else too, with a calorie count I don’t need to factor in. It’s the craving for reading that gets further revved this time of year.

We all know reading is a good thing, right?

But a massive 12-year study showed us just how good it really is. It has long been known that strong

literacy skills correlate with higher test scores and potential for landing better jobs, but it is also linked to longevity, better sleeping patterns, and reduced stress. Even more, reading helps support healthy brain functioning and when this is done consistently it can have a huge impact. As one researcher suggests, “Word power increases brain power.”

But even beyond exploring creative settings, delving into important themes or learning new things, I think there’s another big benefit that can come from reading books, especially this time of year; a time too many describe as busy, chaotic and stressful.

Books help us slow down. They make us sit in one spot. We stop other activity to focus on the words on the page and where they will take us. That is a good thing, especially when we don’t think we have time for it.

Our bodies and our brains require good care.

Proper food and satisfactory rest play an important role, so to that end might I suggest going a bit counter culture over the coming weeks and just…relax.

Take care of your body and brain at the same time.

Find a comfortable chair, wrap up in a cozy blanket, prepare a mug of hot chocolate and simply…read a book.

A friend of mine enjoys re-reading “Anne of Green Gables” each Christmas. I have a favorite too, called “The Biggest Day of the Year”, a non-fiction account of the Christmas concerts that took place in one-room schools. I crave curling up on the couch beside the Christmas tree and stepping back in time to marvel at the preparation by teachers and students for whom it was such a big event. Do we have time to sit and do that? Just read? Yes, I believe it’s even more important this time of year.

In the coming weeks we can expect powerful cravings to surface. Since those cravings develop in the brain, that is probably the best place to start in our attempt to satisfy them. Begin with food for the mind. Pick up a book…and put aside the busy. It’s like superfood for the brain. And it just might make the turkey and toffee balls later on in the season taste that much better. That’s my outlook.

Is your pet at risk for diabetes?

Did you know that dogs and cats can get diabetes too? Here’s what pet owners should know about this disease.

Types Just like people, dogs and cats can be affected by two different types of diabetes. Dogs are more likely to have type 1, which occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce the hormone insulin. Cats usually suffer from type 2, which is characterized by the body’s inability to properly metabolize insulin.

Symptoms

Diabetes generally affects middle aged or older pets but can occur in young animals as well. Dogs and cats that are overweight, inactive or have inflammation of the pancreas may be predisposed to the disease. Here are some signs to look out for: • Increased water consumption and urination • Weight loss combined with an increase in appetite • Decreased appetite • Cloudy eyes (more common in dogs) • Chronic or recurring infections

• Decrease in energy • Dull or dry coat Treatment Type 1 diabetes is incurable, but it can be treated with regular insulin injections and a high-fibre diet.

Type 2 diabetes can be treated with insulin treatments, daily exercise and a diet that’s high in protein and low in carbohydrates.

In all cases of diabetes, early detection is paramount.

If you notice the signs of diabetes in your pets, bring them to their veterinarian as soon as possible.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • A child thought they would see what would happen if they called 911. They found out very quickly that the Police will get involved.

The parent chose to take the opportunity to bring their child to the Detachment to have a Member explain how serious this was. Some parents get it, others don’t.

• Another individual chose to call 911 over a dispute with a family member in Ontario over a television. The individual sure was not happy with the response of the Police. Let us just say if I was the parent of this individual I would not give my child the television either, especially after the profanity and insults that were directed to the Police. A second Member tried to resolve the issue but the individual continued to yell and utilize profanity and then hung up on the

Member. Tsk, tsk.

• Members responded to a report of a fight.

The end result was one individual was lodged, then EMS assessed another who was also lodged. Social Services was contacted and attended because of the children present and the lack of a sober individual to care for the children.

Unfortunately, we are not getting the co-operation we require to determine what did or did not happen. It is not expected that any charges will be forthcoming.

• An adult child locked their parent out of a residence occupied by both the adult child and parent. The RCMP arrived and the parent chose to find another place to spend the night.

I can’t imagine what would happen if I locked my Mom, spouse or child out of the house. Wait, yes I can. I would be in the dog house. That is, if there is room, being I have a dog.

• A parent called for advice and support being their teenager was not helping pay bills. We believe substance abuse by both is affecting their

ability to pay the bills.

There was not much we could do but listen.

• We know someone likely hit a deer and then went and hid in their place of business being they had likely had too much to drink. We secured the vehicle and kept the keys for the registered owner to come and pick them up. Hopefully the owner will deal with their employee in an appropriate manner.

• We have several people who have committed crimes in other jurisdictions and then move back, or move to our area. If those jurisdictions are aware, they advise us and we generate a file and monitor the release conditions.

ply with their release conditions. One individual recently spent a night in our gaol so they could go to court and explain their challenges.

• We are investigating an allegation of Break and Enter and theft of firearm. A family member was involved.

Charges were laid in relation to this file and a warrant was issued for the accused.

• We stopped a speeder who was found to be suspended. The passenger had a valid licence and the Member let them drive away once the original driver was given the speeding ticket and court appearance to explain to the Judge why they were driving while suspended. We already know the reason, that being, they had unpaid fines. Yes, if you don’t pay your fines SGI will suspend you.

• We are investigating a reported theft of fuel from an acreage.

There is video that we are hoping will assist us in locating the suspects.

For those Criminals or future Criminals that may read this report, there are cameras everywhere. Wait, what I am thinking. As if Criminals read this report.

• So an individual with addictions problems is brought to a medical facility, and after being treated they were released. They were apparently not satisfied with their treatment and refused to leave the medical facility. The RCMP got a call and escorted the individual from the facility and yes, you guessed it, lodged them until they

were sober.

• Now, if you are going to visit someone that may or may not want you to visit, I would highly recommend not showing up at 11 at night. We understand you may want to spend some time, say bonding with your child that is being cared for by your ex, however, 11 at night is not that time.

This could result in the Police getting a call, which was the result of this nocturnal visit. No arrests but the individual was escorted to another location.

• We are investigating an alleged fraud where someone was able to obtain another person’s banking information. I am not saying you can’t trust your friends and family with your banking information, rather, wait, sorry that is what I am saying. Don’t trust your friends and family with your banking information.

• Tis the season where we see an increase in collisions with wildlife. Please slow down and “save a buck” literally, by slowing down you may increase the time you have to react. The buck may not be struck and killed and you won’t have to spend “bucks” to fix the damage to your vehicle.

• An individual was in a rush to “go hunting” and got stopped for speeding. They were given the ticket for speeding and a warning for having an insecure firearm. We hope they had success, for selfish reasons of course. If hunters have success there are less animals to be struck and killed which

means less work for us.

Okay, not the most logical theory, however, we do hope this individual has success this hunting season.

• We took another individual to the hospital for a blood test. This is not the kind of test you want to take. It is also not a test you can study for. This resulted from a traffic stop where drugs are suspected as having impaired their ability to operate a motor vehicle. The accused starts with a 72-hour suspension and once we get the results back from the RCMP laboratory in Edmonton, we determine whether Criminal charges are forthcoming. Being it was a company truck, the Member showed compassion and did not seize the vehicle for three days.

• Members wrote approximately 15 tickets and 20 warnings over the last week.

• Tickets were issued for fail to stop at stop sign - $230, fail to produce drivers licence - $100, fail to produce registration - $100, cell phone $280, and most expensive speeding ticket was for $578.

• Warnings were issued for fail to stop at stop sign, inadequate headlamps, excessive damage to windshield, follow vehicle too closely, cell phone, obstructed licence plate, inadequate headlamps and speeding.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate headlamps, inadequate windshield, repair tail lights, inadequate mudflaps or fenders and window tint.

The Alida community extends sincere sympathy to the Martin and Naviaux (Antoine) families on the death of Elina Martin late of Carnduff (Sunset Haven) and formally of Redvers, who passed away Nov. 4 at Oxbow Health Centre, at the age of 98 years.

The Naviaux family had farmed in the R.M. of Reciprocity for many years and now their son continues to farm there. Elina’s funeral mass was held November 12 at R.C. Church in Redvers. Condolences are extended to all other family members.

A large number of friends and family gathered at 361 Café on Nov. 9 to help Bud Phenix celebrate his 80th birthday. Happy Birthday Bud – may you have many more to come. It was a very enjoyable afternoon of visiting and delicious food was also served.

Leonard and Lil Patton attended the Regional Girls volleyball tournament, which was held in Broadview on Nov. 9. They watched the Oxbow Senior Black Knights Girls team win the Gold by defeating the Kipling team. There are three Alida girls on this team – Cordelia Patton, Charity Lemieux and Brooklyn Schulhauser. They now advance to Provincials. Then on Nov. 16 the Oxbow Black Knights Senior Girls Volleyball team participated in the Provincial Volleyball tournament, which will be held at Assiniboine. Once again the Oxbow Girls Knights team was successful in winning Gold when they finally defeated the Lanigan Lazers with a score of 22 – 20 in the third set. It was a very exciting nerve racking and nail-biting game. Congratulations team on a job well done.

Gray and Edel Cowan had a day trip to Regina on Nov. 12 where they visited with son Jeff and enjoyed having dinner with him. Edel also had a medical appointment (reports all a-okay, no more trips needed – yeah) they returned home later that day.

Gary and Brenda Junk visited in Sylvan Lake from Nov. 7 to Nov. 12 with their family – son, Jody, Jill

and boys, as well as with daughter, Kara and Morgan.

On Nov. 14 the senior citizen ladies hosted the Alzheimer’s Coffee Break at the Golden Gate Centre with a nice small crowd coming out to enjoy coffee and dainties. They collected around $445.00 which included donations from the collection boxes set around town and at the coffee break for the Alzheimer Society – Way to go Alida.

The Alida Lions Club hosted their annual Senior Supper on Nov. 14 with approximately 65 in attendance. It is always so great to see many of our local present and past senior residence come out for the delicious meal and comraderie among our friends.

Much appreciated Lions, keep up the good work.

Yvonne Dzuba of Weyburn attended the senior supper and later visited with her son Jeff and Lorna Dzuba before returning home the next day.

Well, our Riders couldn’t pull it off on Nov. 17 as they went down to defeat against Winnipeg. A disappointment for the fans as well as the players, I’m sure. Oh well guess we’re the “next year” team.

We were 1st in the west, hosted the Western finals, so now must aim for the Grey Cup in 2020. Hey if we’re hosting the Grey Cup then that’s when we definitely want to be in the final game. Head up Riders – aim for 2020. So for the end of this year it’s Go Bombers Go this coming weekend.

Leona Brimner who has spent several years in Wawota has moved to Carlyle. She will be closer tofamily members. We wish her well.

The Remembrance Day services were well attended. It is heartening to see so many young people out and taking part. Alexis Thompson of Carlyle, granddaughter of Morley and Joan Hamilton was the recipient of the Legion Bursary. She is taking Dental Hygiene. Briana de Roo of Kelso, daughter of Dean and Cheryl de Roo was awarded the Legion Scholarship for 2019. Briana is studying Sociology at the University of Regina.

Congratulations to Allison and Dominic Crupi of New Market, ON on the birth of a daughter on Oct. 3. She weighed 8 lbs. 11 oz. and has been named Violetta Lynn. Nona who is 90 years old was pleased to meet the new baby and cooked supper for the celebration. Ian and Jerri Laird spent several weeks visiting there. Upon returning to Saskatchewan they visited with Tyler and family at Saskatoon and stayed with Megan’s family while she visited in New Market.

Three local couples celebrated 50th wedding anniversaries recently: Wayne and Sharon Broughton celebrated on Nov. 9 (actual date Nov. 8) with a family gathering in Moosomin. Family attending were Allan and Sherry Davies, Craig Davies and Keelie McGonigal and their children all from Rocanville, Allen and Cherie Broughton, Sydney and Kyle of Pilot Butte. Best man Dean Goden of Moosomin was also in attendance.

Luther and Janice Boehmer celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Wawota Drop In on Nov. 10 (actual date Nov. 15). Family members John Boehmer, who was best man and his wife , Linda,

granddaughters Hayley and Paige Down all of Saskatoon, Angie and family and Julie and family from Maryfield and Maid of Honor, Eileen Goden and Dean attended the event.

Larry and Marion Husband were also married 50 years as of Nov. 8. Happy anniversary to all of these couples.

The annual bus tours have started as of last weekend. Buses came on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with ladies from the city checking out the small town shopping experience. They visited Front Porch, Hidden Gems, Beginnings (at the Beauty Parlour) and the Village Inn. Beginnings is a new business created by Neena Johnson and Tamara Schill with Custom Floral Arrangements and Seasonal Design. There will be three more buses next week.

And for those don’t think the town is busy enough the Flyers Home Opener was on Sunday night, Nov. 9. Their opponents were the Arcola/Kisbey Combines and the Flyers won 7-1. This is the beginning of another enjoyable season of hockey.

Cornerstone Theatre embarks on Dickens production

An enthusiastic cast is rehearsing diligently for Cornerstone Theatre’s production of “Arr Humbug” for the upcoming Dickens Festival.

By Kelly Johnson The Observer This year’s edition of Cornerstone Theatre will be a pirate-themed musical titled “Arr Humbug!”

The play will involve over 20 individuals from

the area in its production. Doug Waldner is the play’s director and Diane Twietmeyer is the musical director.

The play is an adaptation from a Charles Dickens story.

It will run for three

days; Friday and Saturday, December 6 and 7 at 7:30 pm and on Sunday, December 8 at 2 pm. at the Memorial Hall in Carlyle.

People of Maryfield crowded the Villa to join with the residents in Remembrance Day Services. Only one veteran remains. Jim Clarke has moved to the Haven next door, and laid the wreath of Remembrance. Charlotte Kovach conducted the service, with Mary Lou Sweeting at piano.

The Hill brothers, for the Legion, paraded the colors, with a member of the Moosomin RCMP in attendance. Ladies in uniform of the Legion Auxiliary laid a wreath.

Casey Brady, a high school student, recited In Flanders Fields. Seven of the participants stayed for dinner with us. Thank you, Charlotte. May we continue to pray for peace here in our quiet land.

All took turns turning the freezer. Mariann loved vanilla, a double cone. She craved it when she was pregnant. Fred practiced hard for the three-legged race at sports day. The prize was ice cream cones. Eunice was too shy to go into the races, but her Grandpa said, “If you run, I’ll buy you an ice cream.” Our favorites were chocolate and maple walnut.

When members of the staff retire after more than five years of service, the Tenants Association presents them with an engraved plaque. This month Kornelia Ens and Heather Ludlum were to be honored. Nora Lynn Hill had gone on sick leave some time ago and was never recognized for 22 years of service, so we all gathered now. Chairperson, Janet Mark, with Manager, Angela’s assistance, presented these awards. Thank you all for your wonderful care.

Members of Kola Church brought us worship last week, Harold and Cheryl Friesen and their daughter, Darlene, Harold and Florence Klassen and Wendel Plett gave the message.

The Cougars kicked the season off in Bienfait on the Nov. 5. You could see that they were pumped about the new season and came out flying! The team welcomes some new players this year: Dakota Rose, Devon McGonigal, Brandon Glasser and Sam Matthewson is ready to show his two older brothers, Jesse and Tyler the ropes. We have Tim Lequyer back on the bench this year with help from Allan Fleck, Dean Lequyer and Kelly Currie.

The Coalers had a few shots to start the game, but Audet denied them. It was some dangling moves around the Coaler defense that gave

the Cougars’ Johnstone a shot on net and Rose was right there to put in the rebound. Cougars draw first blood!

Fox, with help from Johnstone, sniped one in and gives Carlyle their two goals of the period and they are trailing 4-2.

Turgeon gets the lone goal for the Cougars in the second and then is the first one to score in the third. The Cougars score three in the third from Turgeon, Sam Matthewson and Rose geting his second of the night.

The first period was physical, there were six penalties and six goals scored. The second was pretty quiet with only two goals and two penalties. The third, things got fired up again as there was some more bumping and grinding and scoring. The final ended-up 9-6 for the Coalers.

There were four penalties and seven goals scored in the third.

The Cougars put that game behind them and moved on to their home opener against the Arcola/Kisbey Combines.

Game three of the new season saw the Cougars hosting the Redvers Rockets on Friday, Nov. 15. The Rockets always have a strong team and so the Cougars knew that they needed to work hard!. Tyler and Jesse Matthewson got the Cougars two goals in the first, with Jesse scoring when there was only .6 seconds left on the board! The Cougars lead with a score of 2-1 going into the second.

The Rockets scored two in the second to take the lead. The Cougars tried to net a few to regain the lead, but it just wasn’t happening for them. The shots were Carlyle 14 and Redvers 28, at the end of 2.

Redvers got three more counters in the third and Johnstone got the Cougars’ lone goal.

The score ended up 7-3, but it didn’t feel like it was that lop-sided of a game.

Kisbey Remembrance Day ceremony Submitted On September 11, 1919 the last of Kisbey’s World War I veterans returned to the community. By December of that year he and other returning servicemen had formed a “local” of the Great War Veterans Association and were working to erect a monument to those who had fallen on the battlefields of northern Europe.

One hundred years later Kisbey Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, the successor to the Great War Veterans Association, hosted its annual November 11 Remembrance Day service.

Comrade Nora Weightman chaired the proceedings and Sergeant-at-Arms John Vouture marshalled the parade behind members of the Carlyle RCMP detachment, followed by the Rebekah Lodge colour party, representatives of Carlyle and Kisbey branches of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Royal Canadian Air Cadets Moose Mountain Squadron 723 and Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation.

The roll of honour listing 31 young men from Kisbey and Pheasant Rump who were lost in the two world wars was read and Comrade John Vouture delivered a moving presentation on his participation in the 2019 Royal Canadian Legion “Pilgrimage of Remembrance” to the battlefields and cemeteries of France and Belgium.

Spiritual observance was led by Kevin St. Jean and wreaths were laid on behalf of the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan, the Rural Municipality of Brock, the Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation and the Village of Kisbey. The usual order of service

In just that five minutes, there were five penalties. There was not yet a winner and so it was on to a shootout. Carlyle’s 3 shooters: McGonigal, Geiger and Shaw all capitalized, giving the Cougars the win.

Next game is this Friday, Nov. 22 when the Cougars head to Midale. We will see you at the rink on the 29th, when the Cougars host the Red Devils.

By Laura Kish Kipling Citizen Kenosee Lake Drama Club presented their musical Rogue of the Railway, a play by Tim Kelly, Arne Christiansen and Ole Kittleson.

The play was directed

by Brenda Daku and Robyn Roy-Hampton.

It takes place back in a little prairie town called Kenosee Gulch with the main scene taking place at “The Moose Mountain Melody Hotel”. The stage is also set up with one side leading to Main Street in Kenosee Gulch and the other side leads to the Dining Room and guest rooms of the hotel.

(Teresa Field) is employed. Melody’s boyfriend, Sheriff Billy Bold (Kent Sauter) keeps law and order in the town.

The local farm men (Jake – Jeanette and Matt – Jim) often stop in at Melody’s hotel for a fine meal at a reasonable price and folks like Mrs. Blackman (Gerard Hengen) travel to Kenosee Gulch on the train that stops at the station twice a day.

The Temperance ladies (Agnes – Robyn Roy-Hampton, Ethel – Cathy Sauter, Kim Crawford, Laurie Haaland and Joan McDonald) protest throughout town against the evils of alcohol and wanting equal rights for women.

The word goes out in town that there’s a medicine show coming to Kenosee Gulch.

There will also be a new villain showing up in town, a blackhearted scoundrel, Professor Silas Scavenger (Ben Dubois), who, with his side kick, a Mexican named Jose Manuel Ricardo Santiago Rodrigues Diego (Ron Bennett) sells a “cure all” tonic. They along with Theodora (Evelyn Cullum) lead a group of Medicine Show performers (Fifi – Emily Henwood and Laurette – Cynthia Mellom). Of course our fairest cornflower, Melody, catches Mr. Scavenger’s eye, and his villainess ways are shown. He doesn’t want to pedal snake oil all his life and when he meets the daughter of Honest John Muttonchops....

Hmmm he comes up with a plan...if he was to marry her he wouldn’t have to work again!

The townsfolk have

nothing to fear of the villains, for the Pinkerton man of the Rufus Clang (Gerard Hengen) is in the vicinity and happens to stop in at the right time.

Of course every melodrama needs its villains and Kenosee Gulch has its fair share. Townspeople are alerted about the gang coming to the area, the local bandit Wild Prairie Rose (Ainsley Sauter) who, along with her Prairie Bandit Gang, Dusty (Brenda Daku) and Rusty (Robyn Roy-Hampton), like to terrorize the good citizens.

As night falls on Kenosee Gulch Prairie Rose proposes a plan to Sheriff Billy that they partner up to rob a bank.

Rumor has it that Sheriff Billy is really a felon, they say he robbed a bank in another city. “You can’t trust the Sheriff!”

The audience was treated to a brief intermission.

Wild Prairie Rose plans to rob the Midnight Express. The Sheriff pretended to be in on the robbery to catch the girls. He deputizes the farmers to help out.

Sheriff Billy escapes and takes everyone on a wild goose chase through the audience with the farmers chasing him down.

Back at the hotel Silas Scavenger asks Melody to marry him but it’s Sarah the maid who would like to marry Silas.

Melody casts Mr. Scavenger aside and now he looks for revenge.

Meanwhile the outlaws hide out but the Sheriff saves the day and his Deputy catches the

Wild Prairie Rose.

Later in the second act the scene changes to the tracks just outside of town.

Silas Scavenger and his side kick Jose get revenge on Melody.

And he threw her down on the railway tracks!

And he tied her up to the railway tracks!

And then the sound of the train whistle was getting louder and louder and the train was getting closer and closer.

And then along came Billy to save the day.

The scene changed back to the hotel where after the medicine show the group is supposed to pack up but the show girls want to stay in Kenosee Gulch and Jose is through helping Silas Scavenger.

Silas wants to steal the hotel’s cash box and make a run for it but the Sheriff nabs him, they have a slow-motion knock down and shoot out and Sheriff Billy puts Silas in jail.

In the end the Wild Prairie Rose gives up her life of crime.

What made it even more of a great performance was that all throughout the play there were references made to local businesses and their staff of Kenosee and surrounding communities.

What a great performance! The cast received many hoots and laughs from the crowd all throughout the show ending with a standing ovation.

A special presentation was made to their directors Brenda Daku and Robyn Roy-Hampton.

Dickens parade of costuming, music, volunteering and community spirit Submitted by Michele Amy Have you got your Dickens costume ready?

Always wanted to dress up but never quite hit the timing right? That happened to me a bunch of years ago – it occurred to me a couple of days before the festival that I really should dress up. But I had no idea how to do that. So, thank goodness for good old Google!

I found an online Victorian museum, got a good look at the shape, headed to The Bargain shop and bought some tablecloths – yes – tablecloths. (there was no sewing supply store in town at the time) and then I dredged up my old high-school sewing skills and voila – a Dickens costume.

Then I made the matching hat.

My friend, Emily, always told me that my had looked like an ironing board, and she probably had a point, but I had a hat. So that was all I was going for. I’ve since “upgraded” the old costume and have retired the ironing board (I mean, hat) but you get the idea!

A good costume really just takes a few minutes of creativity, perhaps a quick google moment and (sometimes) access to a glue gun!

Now, as we look on the street during Dickens, we see all sorts of Victorian garb; from Bobbies in their blue uniforms, to fancy dress outfits like the deluxe dress which Lorri Solomon sports, to the lowclass maid outfits complete with mop hats, waifs in slouch hats and homespun pants. And of course we get growled at

by Ebeneezer Scrooge himself, replete with fancy period garb.

We’ll see the many crafted hats at the United Church courtesy of the amazing Irene Doty, and many handsome men in full top hat and tails. We see the many outfits handily sewn by Shelley Slykhuis, and many more crafted using tree skirts as shawls.

It’s a veritable panoply of costuming – including hats which closely resemble miniature ironing boards.

For those sporting a costume of any sort, please stop by Fezziwig’s pub (aka the Carlyle Memorial Hall) and sign the guest book, because then you’ll have a chance to spin the wheel for a special Dickens prize as a thank you for supporting the festival.

The businesses are busily decorating their storefronts in anticipation (and taking advantage of some lovely weather to do so) many organizations around town are preparing their lighted float for the 6pm parade which happens both Friday and Saturday. I’m sure the many children around town are finding a good bag into which they can put all the candy they collect!

The Karate club is providing the free (donation to the food bank) pancake breakfast on Saturday morning, so are busy getting sup-

plies and volunteer lists ready.

From Page 19 - Dickens Festival The United Church folk have decorated their trees, and are baking scones and making vats and vats of tea in preparation for the High Tea celebration.

The Catholic Church is preparing the chowder, the many community groups have started getting their food booths ready, and the folks who shall be selling at the Victorian market are madly involved with preparations to show off

their hand-made wares at the Elementary school location.

And Cornerstone theatre is busy rehearsing their latest offering of the Christmas Carol (this year it’s a Pirate number), and really – I mean seriously- you’ll need to get a good look at the sculpture which Paul Twietmeyer has created for the play. I don’t think we can call this creation a set for a play; handcrafted water

wheels, bridge wheels, mizzen mast and sails – the whole shebang. Just getting an up-close look at this will be worth the price of admission. If you can still buy a ticket, that is. They do tend to sell out rather rapidly for the three official productions.

If you cannot make those because you’re busy working at the festival, just pop on down to the dress rehearsal on Dec. 4th at 7pm. You’ll get a good idea of the shenanigans which happens spontaneously as the crew puts together a production, and you can just toss a $20 into the collection plate – a percentage of which is designated for the local food bank.
