The Carlyle Remembrance Day service was held in the Carlyle Elementary School gym on Sunday, Nov. 11. 2018 marks 100 years of Armistice. The Carlyle Legion, RCMP and Moose Mountain Air Cadets formed the Colour Party at the Service.

After the service at the gym, a short service and wreath laying took place at the cenotaph. (see more photos in this week’s “Observed At” on page 9).

Three essentials for your own Dickens costume

Submitted by Michele Amy Well, Hallowe’en has come and gone, so now is a great time to repurpose those costuming skills as we approach Carlyle Dickens Festival!

Just think how fancy the town looks that weekend, with so many folks in costume and main street all dressed up in its finest, with the tree lit on the South end of Mainstreet. And the people make such a huge addition to the “setting of the stage!”

So let’s all put on our finery and add to the scenery!

If you’ve lived in Carlyle awhile, the Dickens outfit is “old hat!”

But if you have not yet created one, or are new to the community, here are the three essentials!

1. Hats: Whether you represent a character from Victorian England OR Saskatchewan, you are going need some kind of a hat.

Hat Options: a. Make a mop hat: There are some tutorials on line, but this is a simple matter of cutting out a large circle of fabric, and sewing in a piece of elastic about 6 cm from the edge. b. Lady’s hat: Take a straw hat and glue or sew on stuff like feath-

ers, lace, tulle, or simply tie a scarf over the hat and under your chin!

And Voila! OR, if you’re into the Pinterest style creations, do a search for “beginners guide to making a Victorian hat” and you’ll find all sorts of fun crafty things using cereal boxes, bits of Bargain shop lace and great reasons to visit Tanya at Sew n Sews. c.

Gentleman’s hats: pretty much anything from a “Sherlock Holmes style” to a Newspaper boy slouch hat to a fancy top hat will do.

The Outfit: - Lady’s garments: SIMPLE skirt or dress. It’s easy to go simple with these! Skirts are long, often covered in an apron and a shawl. For a shawl, a re-purposed Christmas tree skirt is an easy plan! Or simply an old bedspread folded in a triangle and pinned at the front.

FANCY: well- get out your sewing machine! Or drop a line to Shelley Slykhuis, who has been making Dickens clothing for years!

OR you can simply upscale your fabric choices!

Pair a nice, high necked blouse with a long skirt, and add a fancy hat and shawl, and you will present quite well!

- Men’s garments: Go SIMPLE: Work-

ingmen wore homespun pants – brown or black and usually baggy, with a button down shirt , a pair of suspenders and vest. Often these were belted, if at all, with rope, instead of belts.

Go FANCY: dress in nice black pants with a collared white shirt, and add a string tie and a vest, and a top hat.

Suspenders are a nice touch. If you can find a lovely set of tails, this is fun to sport, along with a pair of spats, you’ll be a regular man about town!

Children: What a fun time to be a kid! For little girls, just about any fancy dress will do, if they wear a hat or a scarf on their heads! Cute mop hats top just about any kind of dress or skirt combo! For little boys, a pair of suspenders.

OUTER-WEAR: Shawls, long coats, greatcoats, Fur coats… these are all great options for staying warm!

Pair with a seasonal scarf or a muff for keeping hands warm and you’ll be the talk of the town!

Whatever you wear, come on down to Fezzywig’s pub to warm up, and enjoy the diverse fashion show as locals and visitors alike show off their Victorian regalia and Christmas spirit.

Meili, NDP not providing alternatives

By Murray Mandryk There is no question that Saskatchewan’s NDP are bringing up legitimate government spending issues, big spending issues and small spending issues.

Whether it’s the $1.9 billion spent on the Regina by-pass, the highly questionable $103,000 an acre costs Global Transportation Hub (GTH) land or even the recent controversies over how much Premier Scott Moe is spending on travel, these are issues any good opposition should be raising.

And hey are important issues because they are about holding government to account on behalf of everyone.

You may recall a highly successful Saskatchewan Party opposition of more than a decade ago that vowed not to be the kind of government that picks winners or losers or wastes money on pet projects or frivolous travel.

Well, as so often happens with aging governments that have been in power for a while, time has a way of causing you forget what you believed in opposition.

You start to justify a few too many exotic trips like Moe’s trip this month to India or justify some bad spending choices. In the case of the GTH or the by-pass, you may even see government throwing good taxpayers’ money after bad.

Sometimes, if they are bad enough and if there are enough of these issues, they can contribute mightily to unseating a government.

After a 16-year-run, the last NDP administration fell victim to the Spudco scandal and a series of others spending missteps.

They say elections are for governments to lose.

That said, most of the time, it’s a little bit more complicated than that.

While governments plagued by scandal and debt and deficits do get voted out, as was the case of the Grant Devine Progressive Conservative government in 1991, there still has to be a viable alternative.

To replace a government, Oppositions much have alternative ideas and plans that are not only different from what the current government is offering but also ideas that are more pleasing to the voter.

It is here where NDP leader Ryan Meili and the NDP clearly needs to step up.

In fairness, it’s still two years before the next election because the Sask. Party has now extended this term to four years and seven months. It would be a tad earlier for the NDP to be releasing an exact platform.

But one might think after 11 years of wandering the opposition wilderness, we might be getting a broad, general understanding of not just what the NDP opposes but also what it stands for.

So far, what the NDP have mostly provided is opportunities for the Sask. Party government to tee off on the Opposition for be indecisiveness. Consider this Justice Minister Don Morgan response in question period last week: “Mr. Speaker, the members opposite, they ask: travel, don’t travel; carbon tax, no carbon tax; drill, don’t drill; leave it in the ground, take it out of the ground; pipelines, no pipelines,” Morgan charged in the assembly Monday. “Mr. Speaker, they are all over the map. I can tell this to the Leader of the Opposition. He’s going to go the same way as (former leaders Dwain) Lingenfelter and (Cam) Broten. I can see a hat trick coming up.”

Of course, Morgan was engaging in a little politics. But Saskatchewan voters do want their governing party to take decisive stances on key issues like the carbon tax and pipelines.

One thing Meili is proposing is a plan to steadily replace existing Saskatchewan pipelines on a scheduled basis.

Energy Minister Bronwyn Eyre called it a “hare-brained scheme” that would cost taxpayers $50 billion. She added it was also completely unnecessary because the pipelines are regularly inspected.

If the NDP are to make inroads, they need to offer solid ideas, not just criticisms.

Bells began ringing again in September when schools opened for another year. Yet there were fewer bells this year than last, and I’m not talking about school closures. For more than a decade a concerted move has been observed as more and more schools do away with the bells that mark the structure of the day.

The bell rings and people know what to do. But at some schools in Canada and a growing number in the United States and United Kingdom, you won’t hear the ringing of bells.

It hasn’t been easy.

In schools that have tackled the issue teachers and administrators debated at length the pros and cons.

Bells keep everyone on schedule. Bells take away personal accountability. Bells are crisp and clear.

Bells are loud and annoying. On it goes.

It’s part of our nature to not like being told what to do, and bells certainly tell us what to do. That, combined with the decibel level at which some are set make it easy to argue against their continued use in our schools. Teachers want to wrap up a lesson at its natural conclusion, not mid-sentence because of the intrusion of a bell. They hope to nurture in students the initiative to be where they need to be not because a bell rings but because they are learning to be self-directed. Those wanting to keep bells say it maintains schedules and is a reminder that each person is part of a bigger community in which they are participating and contributing.

Agitator or organizer? Which is it?

Beyond the classroom bells are part of our lives.

They peel from courthouses, places of worship and camps, and are certainly part of our everyday conversation. When we understand something we describe it as clear as a bell. When we look forward to something we say we will be there with bells on.

And to warn of potential consequences of all we see and do we are reminded we cannot unring a bell.

Bells are joyous, a mark of alertness and a call to action.

But those are just euphemisms. The actual ringing of bells elicit different responses. Church bells that rang for more than 100 years in some communities were forced to cease following noise complaints. In some instances the rulings were overturned while in other places a rather limiting list of exceptions have allowed some bells to be rung again. Of all the sounds heard in the course of a day it is odd that church bells would have been the one taken on. Then again it likely wasn’t the bells they objected to as much as what the bells represent--a faith tradition to which they are opposed.

Bells represent different perspectives depending upon who wants to hear them ring--and who wants them silenced. They can be celebratory. Or mournful. Traditional. Authoritarian. Freeing. Constraining. They are objects of religious adherence-or--objects foisting religious practices on those not wanting them. They are joyous and boisterous in their announcement of events--or--they are obnoxious and intrusive in their noise level. It all depends on who is doing the ringing--and who is doing the listening.

Schools that have successfully lobbied to have bells removed may feel a sense of accomplishment at not having to listen to them any longer but they are still answering to bells of a different sort. We all do. Most of us need to follow some system of reminders…alarms…or schedules. We respond to bells of some kind, though not all of them are audible. The timing of events. The rotation of the sun.

The structure of calendars. Each day we have schedules in motion and routines in common with others.

The beauty of bells in schools, churches and city squares is in their ability to add to the message as they ring out with joy in a celebration or bring a heartbreaking toll to a time of mourning. They announce what is concluding and make us anticipate what might be next. They are unique in their ability to evoke the past while also celebrating the present.

Let’s be sure the bells keep ringing as the keeper of tradition and instrument of change.

That’s my outlook.

Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons We would like to thank those drivers that are committing more than one offence at the same time and giving us a “Multiple Choice” option as it relates to charges.

An example would be “Failing to Stop at a Stop Sign” and “Not wearing a Seatbelt”.

What is hard to believe is more often than not these are the same individuals that ask for a warning. Well they often get a warning on one offence, but not both.

I have had individuals “DEMAND” a warning, even though they have been given a ticket. That said, we aim to please and I still give them a warning. “You do it again and I will give you another ticket” I do realize this is not the warning they wanted, but it is a warning none the less, right?

I guess I should also take the time to thank those that have warrants and operate vehicles without headlights, taillights or break a law which attracts our attention and assists us in clearing up warrants.

I also know that by publishing this nothing will change because those that break the law generally don’t read the paper, and if they do, well they don’t read the Police Report......or so I believe.

We have given some warnings in relation to stopping or parking in no parking zones. Un-

fortunately one individual chose not to head two warnings, one by an off duty officer and chose to park in a no parking zone at the school again.

This time they received a $100 ticket.

We continue to issue tickets for not wearing seatbelts.......seatbelt use has been the law in Saskatchewan since 1977 and the law throughout Canada by 1991.

Why would you let someone travel with you unbelted? The unbelted individual will get thrown around in a rollover or collision and you will likely be injured, and possibly die. For those that think the only one affected by not wearing a seatbelt is the violator. Sorry......family and friends are affected and First Responders are tired of dealing with tragedies that could be avoided.

Well as you are all aware winter is here and we had at least 6 reportable collisions in the last week with 3 vehicles hit the ditch on one evening shift. Many feel that 4 wheel drive, or all wheel drive enables you to drive the same speed in poor weather. This is very inaccurate information. What we find

is these are the vehicles that tend to go in the ditch deeper.

After receiving a report of an individual driving while impaired by a drug was received Members made patrols and located the vehicle, then the driver and confirmed he was OK, however, we were unable to lay charges.

So we have had many questions about the new Cannabis Act and whether we have laid any charges. Well we presently have one investigation where charges will likely be forthcoming. Just because Cannabis is now legal, like alcohol, however, there are restrictions to where and when you can use it. Minors can not consume Cannabis anywhere.

We had a request for a Peace Bond. Rarely do we ever follow through with Peace Bonds, being, in most cases, there is enough for Criminal Charges and we can put conditions of no contact on right away. A Peace Bond requires both individuals to go to court.

Much more time consuming and it requires the cooperation of both parties.

We have all gone to school and we don’t always get along with our teachers, however, threatening the school or the teachers is “Counterproductive” as one youth found out recently.

We had some cattle escape, but they crossed the highway. We assisted the owner by blocking traffic so as they could cross back to where they belong. We never did find out “Why the Cow crossed the Road” We were hoping that there was a chicken around to

life was held at the Wawota Town Hall on Nov. 12. A noon luncheon was served with stories and reminiscing about Neil’s life. It was a great way to remember a loved one.

Remembrance day services were held at the Wawota Town Hall last Sunday. There was a good attendance with a variety of young and old. It is always a moving service with lots to think about, especially with the tense situations throughout the world.

Congratulations to Amy Stolz who was awarded a Legion Bursary and Scholarship for 2018.

Roy Bortolotto, completed his series on different religions at the Wawota united Church recently.

Those religions discussed were Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism. It was interesting to compare these

religions as to how they are similar and how they are different.

Word has been received of the passing of Clint Nicholson, of Pense, SK on Oct. 30.He was 75 years old and was a former resident of Kelso. Sympathy to family and friends.

I am excited to tune in to the Giller Prize Awards next Monday, Nov. 19. These awards were started in 1994

by Jack Rabinovitch in memory of his wife, Doris Giller. It is now an award of $40,000 for the best short story or novel. Three judges short list 10-12 novels in the fall and then short list 5 of them. Several authors are a repeat but each year there are some new comers. I always try to read as many as I can before the award night but have to wait to receive the books.

We had one ex spouse advised us of a party at a residence where drugs were being used. We determined everything was OK. On that point, whatever you do, don’t get your ex mad at you. We often get information from what may be described as a vindictive ex spouse.

I have been involved in arresting impaired drivers, finding stolen property, and arresting disqualified drivers. Sometimes the spouse is just being vindictive. We investigate and determine if this is the case. The facts, are however, that secrets are not secrets if someone is mad at you.

Other matters dealt with over the last week include a false alarm, child welfare investigations, and some Harassing messages over Facebook.

The most expensive speeding ticket was $538.

As always we are giving out tickets, warnings and inspection notices for Window Tint, Stop Sign Violations, Seatbelt Violations, failure to produce registration, window tint, and no drivers licence.

Lions 5SKS District Convention Submitted by Myrla Holland ‘Carlyle Has It’ is the motto and if convention evaluation sheets can be believed - Carlyle certainly had it November 2 -4, 2018 at the 5SKS Lions Convention.

“The best convention I have ever been to”, “ [Can you put 5 stars and a happy face in here??] “, “DO IT AGAIN!” and

“All conventions should follow what Carlyle did – there would be more clubs attending” are all direct quotes from the evaluation sheets left behind. There were a few suggestions for improvements but not even one negative comment!

speakers and entertainment. We asked clubs to volunteer to do short 10 minute presentations on the SERVICE they do or have done in their community – Broadview, Estevan, Regina Central and Carlyle stepped up.

The delegates were in whole hearted support of this concept. New ideas to take back to their own clubs, increased pride in being a Lion and recognition of the work clubs do were all positive remarks.

Diabetes is the next big challenge that LCI is taking on so we asked local nurse and Diabetes Coordinator, Auldene Craig to speak about healthy food choices.

Her contribution was later commented on favourably as being a talk that held audience interest to the end. PDG Terry McAleese explained LCI’s new Campaign 100 initiative promoting diabetes prevention.

This riveting and heartwarming story conveyed their passion for spreading the good news story of the Lions dog guide program. Our own Saskatchewan ‘Ride for Dog Guides’ motorcycle group told of their exploits and passion for the program as well.

The heart and soul of Lionism is the desire and need to ‘volunteer’ and the President of the Saskatchewan Volunteer Firefighters, Doug Lapchuk reinforced that with a witty and entertaining presentation about why volunteers are a necessary part of the success of every community.

In rural Saskatchewan STARS has been

and is a vital service. The first flight when STARS came to Saskatchewan was to our neighboring town of Arcola and many Lions Clubs in small town Saskatchewan make annual contributions to keep them in the air. Their Community Coordinator, Shari Lemon gave an interesting and insightful look at how things happen when a call comes in.

A video presentation by our local Olympian, Carter Morrison with help from Dad Trevor and Mom Lisa, – participant in the Opening Ceremonies at Rio and multiple medal winner at the World Dwarf Games – was really interesting. Circumstances preventing them from attending in person but we were grateful they took the time and effort to make a video presentation for us.

Our guest speaker was Past International

President Wayne Madden from Auburn, Indiana, USA , accompanied by his wife Linda. He spoke about some of his Lions experiences and presented some friendship banners. Our other international attendee was MD5 Council Chair Keith Zeutschel from Horace, North Dakota, USA. We would welcome them all back at any time!

The Memorial Service honoured 22 departed Lions from 17 clubs. Too many lost in one year.

We honoured their years of Lions service and read personal comments about each during a video presentation of their pictures. This followed a short but very relevant service emphasizing the Lions motto “We Serve” conducted

by Rev. Michelle Moore.

Local fiddle group, led by Michelle Amy, who has been instrumental in bringing back a nearly lost fiddle tradition, had toes tapping and people dan-

cing on Friday evening. Saturday evening, Cornerstone Theater did a series of short skits that had the delegates roaring with side splitting laughter. There were many positive comments about both.

The Carlyle District Lions Club put a lot of work both before and during, into hosting this Convention and we are more than pleased that it was met with such positive responses. We had support from the

local area – Bear Claw Casino, Town of Carlyle, Food Bank, Legion, The Observer, Quilt Club, King’s, Michael’s, Second Chance Store, the Chamber of Commerce and several individuals – for which we are ever grateful.

Rockets down Cougars in close fought battle

Submitted by Nicole Currie The Cougars were off to Redvers on Nov. 16 to take on the 2017/18 League Champs. It was a fast paced hockey game that started right from the first puck drop.

The Rockets Jordan Miller, scores just 30 seconds into the game.

Greenwood wasn’t going to let them have the lead for long as he nets one a minute later with Boutin and Morrison getting the assists. The Cougars take the lead just past the ten minute mark with a goal

from Mason Belanger, assisted by Ty Currie and Cooper Fox. Redvers responds 2 mins later scoring on their penalty kill.

Things get physical when Potapinski checks Currie into the open bench door.

McLean comes in and straightens the Rocket player out. The period ends tied at 2.

The second period was scoreless, but certainly not from a lack of trying. Both teams played some great hockey all game. Action was at both ends with the Cougars and Rockets try-

ing to score the go ahead goal. It would be great to know what the shots were as Cougar, Landon Audet, stood on his head all game!

To the third we go, tied at 2. Redvers again, wastes no time netting one as Brady Gaudet scores forty-four seconds into the period.

The Cougars work hard, trying everything that they can to tie it back up!

With the goalie pulled, we have a chance with just 2 seconds left, but it just wouldn’t go in. The Rockets win the battle 3-2.

ended in a loss 7-3. Then on Saturday at 1:30 we played against Whitewood and won 8-0. Our team advanced to the B final against Crosby and lost out. Good job team.

was on Nov. 13 in Lampman at 6:00, and then on Sunday, Nov. 18 they travel to Carievale at 4:00 pm and then Monday the 19 in Arcola at 6:15 pm. Go Cougars go.

Gail McLachlin spent from Nov. 2 to 7 visiting in Calgary with her daughter Grace, Luke McKenna and grandchildren Thea and Finn. She helped grandson Finn celebrate his 1st birthday on Saturday (actual date, Nov. 9).

Gail also visited with son Mitchel Cowie and Andrea Gohn.

A Remembrance Day Service was held at Redvers School on Nov. 7. The students and staff did an excellent job at

putting together an interesting and memorial service. A great job as always – appreciate the time you all make and take to remember this special day. We shall Remember Them.

Attending the Remembrance Day Service in Redvers from Alida were Charly and Maureen Boutin, Diane Potapinski, Redmond and Melissa Demas, Gray and Edel Cowan.

On Nov. 8 the Alida Lions Club will hold their annual Seniors Supper at Alida Hall with hopes of a fair crowd will attend. It is always great to see some “old” familiar face of former Alida residents as well as the faces we see around town and renew acquaintances and friendships. Ex-

cellent food guys look forward for this annual supper each year – keep up the good work.

As of today (Nov. 8) we have 16 tables booked for our Craft & Trade Show which is coming up very soon – please check the upcoming events for information.

Our vendors include – homemade crafts, baking, steeped tea, Pampered Chef, elevacity, Tupperware, Norwex, knitting, Voxxlife, books, Avon, Thirty-one, Party-Lite, Clare Carla Bedding, Chic-charm bracelets and preserves from Jackie’s Prairie Kitchen. Unless you know something I don’t know, dying is not optional. Many of us think about dying only in vague, out there, down-the-road kinds of ways, hoping it will happen sometime later, perhaps after a brief illness, at home, without pain, surrounded by loving friends and family.

Unfortunately, most of us don’t die that way.

There is no doubt the process of dying can be frightening. And fear often causes us to avoid doing things or taking action. We don’t like to think about death. We don’t teach our children about it. And we certainly don’t like to talk about it.

Conversations about death and dying can be difficult. Let’s change that.

Let’s open up these difficult conversations so everyone can join in and be part of them.

Having recently attended the International Death Symposium in Toronto, there is much new information to share. To that end, Phenix Counselling Services will be hosting weekly meetings to discuss several topics surrounding death and dying, including: Dispelling some of the myths of death and dying; Do you need a M.A.I.D.?; Health care directives; What the heck is a death doulah?; Got a will? Here’s a way to write one; Who’s your proxy?; Grief and mourning are not the same thing; Help for the holidays and other special anniversaries.

Fitness club runs every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 7:45 – 8:30 and is open to all GFK students and staff, all fitness levels are welcome. Come out and get a workout in to start your day!

Remember, the School Community Council meets every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7:00 P.M. If you want to know what is going on at the school or have questions, please plan to attend. Your participation is necessary for our school success.
