Moose Mountain Provincial Park Remembrance Day Service Submitted by Joan Adams Approximately 100 people braved the -20 degree weather to show their respect to our veterans, past and present, at the outdoor cenotaph in Moose Mountain Provincial Park.

MC Joan Adams opened the service with the singing of “O Canada,” followed by a prayer from Jim Sedor of the Moose Mountain Church of Christ.

Kim Brown, Park Manager, lead a group of children in a special presentation song called “Light a Candle for Peace”. Lori Snelling read “In Flanders Fields” and the response was lead by her husband, Miles Snelling. Shelby Adams wrote and read a beautiful poem, dedicated to the memory of her grandfather who was a tail gunner in a Lancaster bomber in WWII. Wreath presentations were made by: Gerry Kuzick (Air Force), John Pott (Army), Steve Bird (Navy), Cst. Michael Pike in his Red Serge (RCMP), Zac McClinton (Veteran’s Families and Search & Rescue) and Joe Cornforth (Moose Mountain Church of Christ). On flag detail this year was Patti McAuley and granddaughter Alivia.

Amid the freezing temperatures, Ainsley Sauter trumpeted the ‘Last Post’ and ‘Reveille.’ John Pott recited the “Act of Remembrance” followed by “God Save The Queen.”

As we do after each service, Joan invited anyone in attendance to place their poppy on one of the wreaths, in their own act of remembrance.

Everyone was then invited to the Moose Mountain Church of Christ for a hot beverage, homemade soup, sandwiches and baking. Thank you to all who contributed to that delicious lunch.

Thank you to the Adams family for their support in this service which, this year, was dedicated to Veteran, Marcel Frecon who passed away in July, 2019.

Past sacrifices offer needed perspective

By Murray Mandryk Monday, we commemorated the 101st armistice.

Such occasions seem to have less meaning to recent generations, as we lose generations’ first-hand understanding of the meaning sacrifice and the meaning of country.

Now that first commemoration of armistice was more than a century ago, we risk it becoming a historic relic where we can’t relate to its true impact and meaning.

This is a bigger problem than most realize, as evident in the angry separation talk we now hearing from those who truly don’t understand our history.

Those in the #wexit movement that hung a Canadian flag upside down the week before we commemorate the armistice certainly have a right to their opinion. Those of the greatest generation, and generations before, went to war to preserve such freedoms.

But maybe now is also a good time to reflect not only on a time when a country came of age but also reflect on what motived those who made it so great.

Certainly, no one went to war for fantastic financial gain. The sacrifice of many who served actually didn’t end with their military service.

Many returned to a tough life eeking out existence on the farm at a time when there was not only no federal government subsidies.

Heck, we didn’t even have equalization right now that has suddenly has become one of the biggest political grievance in today’s political world.

(Yet a decade ago we were being told equalization fairness was not an issue because we should instead be striving to be permanent “have” province?)

Many WW2 veterans were not immediately dismissed from service and could not pursue acquisition of farmland. If you were a First Nations veteran, you never got the farmland promised.

We just can’t compare the struggles, which is important when you are talking about breaking up a country our grandfathers and great grandfathers fought for.

Of course, this is not to suggest that the West doesn’t have grievances today like the carbon tax.

We all live in the here and now and it’s legitimate to be angry when the natural gas you desperately needed to dry your grain at this time of year is hit with a further carbon tax.

Nor is there much doubt that this federal government has often seemed oblivious to western concerns and issues, exactly why voters out here voted against Liberals and members of other parties supporting the carbon tax.

But generations removed from that sacrifice, and perhaps the reality that governments can’t always fix all our economic struggles like the ones they saw during the wars and Great Depression, we do seem to have lost perspective.

As bad as the situation may now seem to be,are we to believe the #wexit crowd that a federal government that bought a pipeline and is now to court to get it built is out to destroy the Western oil economy as their rhetoric suggests?

Is it just possible that some of our struggles in oil and other commodities just might have something to do with world economic circumstances?

And does anyone believe we could control these worldwide economic circumstances better by becoming a landlocked nation without a deep water port that would have to negotiation moving our oil through pipelines across what would then be foreign nations?

A lack rudimentary understanding of today’s geo-politics is also a problem, but the problem begins with a lack of understanding of our own history and the sacrifice so many made to already make this country great.

What would those who sacrificed so much have to say to those who now want to break up our country over the democratic results of an election? As we commemorate the 101st armistice, maybe this is something else we need to contemplate.

Because they knew a thing or two An interior decorator was explaining the products she was using to update a family room and pointed to the wallpaper that now hung on two of the walls stating “don’t worry, this is not your grandmother’s wallpaper.”

A chef known for taking everyday recipes and turning them into gourmet specialties brought his dish out of the oven exclaiming, “this is not your grandmother’s pot roast.”

A retailer in Washington stocking items for needlepoint designs contrasted what she does from the “old, stuffy hobby” beShelley Luedtke cause “this is not your grandmother’s needlepoint.”

Alright already, we get the idea. Anything classic, conventional or traditional gets associated with grandma. And to what end? Seemingly to associate the former with something outdated, antiquated, even…dowdy. The inference is that the one unlike your grandmother’s is modern, stylish, and state-ofthe-art. I can speak only about the grandmothers in my life, but to that end I do have something to say.

Enough with putting down our grandmothers’ stuff.

My grandparent’s home was beautiful. The décor was bright and pretty, but most of all, impeccably cared for.

My husband’s grandmother had a kitchen many of us would deem small, yet out of that kitchen came remarkable baking and delicious meals every week that kept everyone fed, no matter how many people came through the door.

Grandmothers are enterprising, creative and industrious women. This incessant need to separate what our grandmother’s did with what we do today is not only disrespectful but also totally misguided.

Those grandmothers, whose tastes and talents we now so easily disparage, were the ones getting things done. They ran businesses. They raised children. They served on committees and drove fundraisers. They had the ambition and ideas to see things happen, and the wisdom to know how to get it done. And they’re still at. Perhaps even harder than ever.

We have robot vacuums, self-cleaning this and that, and appliances we can operate through our smartphones, yet my home never looks as immaculate as my grandmother’s did. We have large kitchens stocked with every cooking device at our disposable yet we’re hard pressed to replicate what grandma did with four burners and an oven.

It’s easy to look at past generations and dismiss what they said or did because we question its pertinence to the complexities of life today. There’s little relevance, we might assume, to our lives. But how wrong that assumption would be. Our grandmothers and their grandmothers…and the grandfathers too, by the way…are people we would be well served to emulate; not negate.

Those that came before gave us lessons in building family, faith, and community; along with examples of honest living, unbounded hospitality, and genuine care for friends and neighbors. Certainly there are exceptions to this broad brushstroke, but the best in us is likely the legacy of what they passed on.

For a lot of grandmothers, hospitality was a normal state of affairs; not an event to be planned for.

The door was always open and the coffee always on.

Our grandparents took care of their neighbors because they knew their names and spent enough time with them to be aware of their needs. What we could learn!

We like to operate from the premise that anything we come up with today is that much better than anything from the past. We want to be on the right side of what is contemporary and not be handcuffed to what is deemed old-fashioned. But while we may not share tastes in décor, handiwork or food, (then again, we might) we are the poorer for it if we reject out of hand what is associated with our forerunners.

There are things we would do well to reclaim and say, “yes, this is my grandmother’s.”

Those hands that hung that wallpaper, cooked that pot roast and created that needlepoint shaped the families and communities we now call our own.

If you have someone in your life who fills the role of a grandmother, take her hands in yours and be grateful.

That’s my outlook.

Financial Focus Managing Your Money - Aging and care, do you have a plan?

It’s never too soon to make a plan for who will look after you when you can no longer look after yourself. The good news is the plan doesn’t need to be long or complicated. You just need to have one.

It’s that time of life when you’re caught in the middle of dealing with the needs of your own kids and the needs of your aging parents. HEALTH HUB 5 myths about Alzheimer’s disease Alzheimer’s disease is poorly understood. To prevent stigmatizing those afflicted, here are five longstanding myths about it that need to be dispelled.

1. Alzheimer’s disease only affects memory While memory loss is the symptom that’s most often associated with Alzheimer’s disease, the condition can cause a host of other cognitive issues. For instance, it may manifest as a loss of interest in one’s favourite pastimes, a loss of co-ordination such as difficulties with eating or getting dressed, word repetition, getting lost in familiar surroundings and becoming easily agitated.

2. Only seniors are affected We tend to think of Alzheimer’s disease as only affecting the elderly. However, while people over 65 years of age are more likely to be diagnosed, early-onset Alzheimer’s can afflict people in their forties or fifties.

3. Life stops at diagnosis A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t mean the individual’s life is over.

With treatment and close monitoring, it’s possible to

pursue projects and live a fulfilling life for many years after the disease is detected.

4. People with Alzheimer’s disease are violent Alzheimer’s disease manifests in varying ways among different people. Some individuals diagnosed with it may express their frustration in aggressive ways, but this doesn’t occur universally. Ensuring those with Alzheimer’s have a calm and stable environment will reduce the likelihood

of violent behaviour.

5. It’s possible to prevent Alzheimer’s disease There’s no way to entirely prevent Alzheimer’s. However, it’s possible to significantly reduce your risk of developing it by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Stay active, eat well, and above all, avoid smoking. Tobacco smoking increases your risk of developing cognitive disease by up to 45 per cent. Maintaining a healthy social life is also important.

Weekly RCMP report complicated. This taxes all first responders, not just the Police.

• An individual abused both drugs and alcohol and ended up calling 911 on themselves being they were having a bad experience.

They were transported to the hospital and then lodged for their own safety.

• Another individual snuck away to use cannabis with a friend.

They felt funny, being the “weed” was different and passed out. Due to a lack of cooperation from those that were using the cannabis we were unable to determine if there was anything “funny” as it relates to the cannabis.

The individual who had the bad reaction was transported to Regina by ambulance. Our investigation continues.

• If you and your significant other split up and the significant other does not leave the residence you cannot deem them to be a tenant and try and evict them. If you try and evict any individual by using physical force you are committing the offence of assault. There are routes to go for advice as it relates to renters. Physical force is not an option and generally we do not care what your lawyer told you. In this case we have charges of assault and uttering threats.

• We had Members spread out all over the Detachment area for Halloween. A Member had completed their

shift and had forgotten to turn off their portable radio and heard a call for service nearby.

The Member who was in full uniform, but not in a Police vehicle, attended and located an individual. This individual was suffering from mental health and addiction issues as well as breaching their release conditions. The individual was arrested and walked across the road to the Detachment arriving before the nearest on Duty Member was able to navigate all the “trick or treaters”.

• A youth on conditions does not realize the gravity of those conditions and we are now looking at charges of breaching those conditions. How hard is it to stay away from someone you are not to have contact with? Pretty hard we guess.

• An intoxicated individual was causing problems at a residence.

This individual ended up being arrested and lodged until the following morning. The problem was not likely resolved, just prevented from continuing for the evening. We are realists.

• An individual was arrested at a residence for breaching their release conditions. Another individual felt it would be productive to interfere with the arrest. This individual approached the Member with their hands in their pockets and did not comply with direction. Let us just say when you don’t listen to the Police you tend to cause the Police some anxiety. This individual was subsequently arrested and charged for Obstruction.

• It is always strongly recommended that you listen to the Police.

As a young teenager, I was out fishing with my brother and father during a military base defence exercise. I was arrested and placed in an impromptu gaol. After several minutes one of the officers in charge of the exercise realized I was not involved and released me. I knew I had done no wrong but when an “authority figure”, in this case a soldier, says,

“Stop you are under arrest!” Well, I stopped.

All ended well and I had a good story. Now if I was manhandled and treated poorly, I would have waited to lodge a complaint afterwards. I can assure you we take any complaint seriously.

• Now on proper behaviour I wish to remind parents they do not have the right to attend any school and go to a class room without the knowledge and permission of the school staff. Again, if you don’t like how things are being dealt with you cannot just choose to ignore protocols put in place for everybody’s best interest.

• A parent and child are arguing over ownership of a residence. The child lives there but both state they own it. The parent changed the locks and the child no longer had access. In such cases we can assist in getting clothing. Everything else becomes civil.

• A report was received of harassing text messages from a number they don’t know.

There is a family dispute over children and the victim believes they are coming from their ex inlaw. The Police Officer did not feel they were related to the custody dispute and recommended the number be blocked.

Thus avoiding any future messages.

• The wrought iron gates from the Redvers Cemetery were stolen.

Our investigation continues.

• An individual received a 72-hour suspension due to excessive alcohol consumption.

• An alleged intoxicated individual hit a deer and then departed the scene without reporting the accident to the Police. This resulted in an investigation and the individual in question received a $360 open liquor ticket and a court appearance for failing to report a collision. I am not saying the were intoxicated, rather, well, yes, I guess I am saying they were intoxicated. The facts are the facts.

• Warnings were issued for cannabis in a vehicle, liquor in a vehicle, operate a motor vehicle without a valid licence, operate a motor vehicle or trailer without valid insurance, fail to produce registration, fail to stop at stop sign, inadequate speedometer, unrestrained passenger under 16 years old, fail to wear seatbelt, insecure load, obstructed licence plate, inadequate muffler, fail to have a functioning headlight dimmer switch, fail to produce drivers licence, inadequate headlamps, fail to display licence plate, inadequate signal light, drive with undue care and attention, and speeding.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate speedometer, daytime running lights, inadequate brake lights, mudflaps, inadequate signal lights, inadequate licence plate light, inadequate windshield, window tint, inadequate side view mirrors, replace back window, inadequate headlamps, and inadequate bumper.

The vehicle was operable and we did not need the report. The Member provided the number 310-RCMP for future non-urgent calls. Please remember, 911 is for an “EMERGENCY” Other 911 calls were “static” lines and are usually, if not always, a computer or phone line issue. We still have to look into those.

• There have recently been some attempts by criminals to obtain information from people by pretending to be the police, banks, or Canada Revenue. Sometimes the number displayed even comes back to these agencies, as do the e-mails. Do not provide information. Call your bank or your local Police directly. Do not provide your Social Insurance Number, banking information, date of birth or any personal information.

• We had a false alarm caused by an employee returning to their workplace to acquire their cell phone that they had forgotten inside and set off the alarm in the process.

Another false alarm was caused by the homeowner.

• A student refused to leave school and the Police were called.

I know what you are thinking, okay, I don’t but I think most of us would have jumped at the opportunity. As always there is more to the story but, still hard to imagine someone refusing to leave school.

• Social Media is not the way to vent your frustrations, be they legitimate or assumed.

Remember, even if you delete your comments someone has likely taken a “screen shot” of the message or part of it and it will never go away.

This could be deemed harassing communications. We hope by our involvement we have resolved the incident.

• So the Police get a call of two intoxicated siblings causing problems at a residence.

Upon the arrival of the RCMP the one sibling struck the other sibling in the face in front of the Police, which resulted in a hospital visit. Sibling rivalry? All I can say the Members had front row seats to this battle. Both ended up being charged for assault with one getting to spend time in our cellblock.

• Addictions and mental health concerns occupy much of our time.

Unfortunately due to addictions individuals commit Criminal offences. If we as a society did a better job dealing with addictions and mental health our job would be much less

There was a good turnout at the Alida Golden Gate Centre on Nov. 5 when the Flu Clinic was held and those in attendance received their annual flu shot. Hopefully you too are able to get your needle so that this flu season won’t be as worrisome for you. I am one that does believe that these shots do help.

Tim Cowan was in Saskatoon for a few days this past week where he attended a water course, returning home on Nov. 8.

On Nov. 7 a Remembrance Day program was

held at Redvers School where the students participated in the program. It was a very touching and well performed program that was truly appreciated by all those in attendance. It is a great time to “Remember Those” who fought for our freedom. Much appreciation goes out to the teachers and students for a job well done. Attending this program from Alida were Shelly Cowan, Gray and Edel Cowan and maybe others that I missed seeing there.

It was another early deadline today Thursday, Nov. 7 for the Nov. 15 issue, so therefore not much news on hand. Then it will be back to the original

deadline on Monday, Nov. 18 for the next issue on Nov. 22, hopefully more news at that time. Amber fished in Wisconsin, where she grew up. Janet caught a salmon at Nanaimo, but in the picture, the bottom half was cut off by a post on the ship. Margaret Penner had the picture of her best catch: her husband Gilbert.

Sandra Dick, one of our caregivers, brought her family for singing and instrumental numbers. Manuela and Sandra play piano: Sandra is learning the accordion; Cornelia plays violin; and their sister-inlaw the mandolin. Little Angelina has the best diction of all the singers.

On Halloween night, Grace Toms and Dolores Ries gave out the treats from the staff to 84 visitors.

They showed off their costumes to the residents in the lounge.

Charlotte Kovach led a United Church Hymnsing, with Bob Darrock at the piano; as well he renewed our library books.

The Swinging Seniors of Wawota, led by Marie Vail, gave us an afternoon of singing and visiting.

The Wawota United Church held their annual Ffwl supper on Nov. 3. A crowd of over 300 people enjoyed the meal.

Cher Badger spent 10 days visiting her mother in Illinois. Her son and daughter-in-law and granddaughter also live there. Her daughter and her three children flew in from San Diego to join the family.

It was the first meeting of Cher’s mother with her great- grandson Giovanni. They enjoyed playing cards and hanging out.(Cher’s mother who is 92 years is a ruthless Skip Bo player) The community was saddened last week to hear of the sudden passing of Lester Brickley of Kennedy last week. He was 61 years old. Sympathy to wife Ronda and family and his horde of acquaintances and friends. Funeral arrangements are pending.

A town meeting held a meeting on Nov. 4 to discuss the possibility of building a subsidized Seniors’ Independent Assisted Living Centre in Wawota. Fifty-two interested people attended. An initial Board of Directors was elected, namely Joan Wilson, Dorothy Rohatyn, Ken Robertson and Kevin Kay. This group will secure a charitable status, establish bylaws and seek funding for this project. We are proud of these volunteers who step up to the plate for the progress and betterment of our community.

Carlyle December Dickens Festival celebrates the best of community Submitted by Michele Amy Are you feeling like Christmas has lost its sparkle? Does it sometimes seem that December comes and goes in a flurry of consumer activity? Where can a person go to immerse themselves in the Spirit of Christmas this December?

How about trying the Carlyle Dickens’ Festival?

There is something for everyone on this sparkly weekend: Horse drawn carriage rides, lighted parades, street vendors selling scrumptious food, afternoon old time dances, themed theatre productions, English High Teas, Victorian hand-made market, magicians, children’s productions, photos with a man in a white beard and red suit AND a free festival of live music in the Fezzywigs’ pub, all topped up with a town dressed for Dickens, and shopkeepers featuring their best shopping deals of the year. The Carlyle Dickens festival is the place to be Dec. 6 – 8, that’s for sure.

And if you comemaybe consider coming on the Friday, and staying over to really dive into the festival, and then enjoy the free breakfast offered on Saturday morning and all the town has to offer. You won’t be disappointed.

As with most events in rural Saskatchewan, the Dickens festival has been run for 17 years by a dedicated committee of volunteers whose mission it is to help to perpetuate fam-

ily friendly community spirit and to support the organizations and businesses of the local community. This is a serious celebration of the volunteerism which is alive and thriving in rural Saskatchewan.

Carlyle volunteers participate by decorating the town in period garb – from flower pots to light standards, dressing up the storefronts and lighting the giant tree in the center of main street – and decorating themselves and the townsfolk by whipping up period costumes and accoutrements!

Each of the other volunteer organizations in town is also offered an opportunity to participate and to fundraise for their individual organizations as well: maybe one will run a special photo booth, or perhaps others offer carriage rides, or, like the Catholic Church, whose members serve over 640 gallons of home-made chowder for hungry festival attendees!

The Cornerstone Theatre group has been performing creative musical variations of The Christmas Carol for 17 years – 2019 features a Pirate adaptation! (tickets sell very quickly).

Donations at the free Saturday pancake breakfast, as well as a percentage of the ticket sales from the Cornerstone Theatre troupe is donated directly to the food bank in an effort to reinforce the Dickensian message of caring for the least among us during this time of year.

Co-ordinated by the Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party , The Dickens Music Festival is hosted in the Fezzywig’s pub on Friday and Saturday, and features the vibrant local musical scene present in the South East corner of the province.

Showcasing everything from folk music, country, gospel Christmas music, traditional Old Tyme dances, local youth performing troupes as well as family bands, First Nations’ recording artists, Juno award winning players; the festival is a diverse and dynamic mix of excellent musicians.

The tweener musical acts feature some up and coming amateur musicians and diverse buskers cruise about the town, adding their music for the entertainment (and the donations) of local festival-goers.

Not only is the entire festival local, but all of the proceeds stay local as well, and circulate around to support the various activities which make living in a small town such an excellent opportunity. Cougar’s Big Six home opener a night to remember

By Kelly Johnson The Observer The Carlyle Cougars hosted the rival Arcola/ Kisbey Combines Friday, Nov. 8 at the Carlyle Sports Arena.

The rink was very busy, the community having made every effort to see this night would be a special one.

The home opener was a fundraiser for KidSport and drew over 500 fans. The crowd was treated to a night of various draws and promotions, as well as free admission. Starting at 5 p.m. the kitchen was selling wings which drew a good crowd as a fundraiser for minor hockey.

Both teams took to the ice for warm-ups, readying for the 8 p.m. puck drop.

Coaching the Combines are: Gary Goudy Sr. and Gary Goudy Jr. This year’s team will have six new faces and Gary Sr. stated they are “looking for a good season”.

The Cougars are coached by Tim Lequyer and Alan Fleck. Team manager Dean Lequyer tells me they have five new faces on the team and “expects the league to be stronger this year”.

The Combines came into this game with a record of 1-0, having lost to Bienfait by a

score of 7-5, but were given the victory when Bienfait was forced to forefeit the game.

The Cougars also lost to Bienfait, 9-6 and were 0-1 to start the season.

The league is one division this year, with each team playing a home and away games with each other, and then each team will play an extra game against one team to round out the schedule.

Fans can check the Big Six website for game results, schedules and scoring stats.

The teams lined up at their respective blue lines for the singing of “O Canada” and the crowd was ready for the opening faceoff . . . one moment please.

Tyler Fahrenbach stepped onto the ice with microphone in hand and calls Kelly Currie from the stands. Kelly, who retired from the Big Six in the off-season joined Tyler at the centre red line, unaware of the surprise ceremony.

Tyler spoke of Kelly’s contribution to the Cougar hockey team, as well as to the community and at this time announces that Kelly’s jersey number 9 will be retired. Congratulations Kelly!

Cougars, and has won the scoring title on three different Big Six teams, the only player to accomplish that. He played college hockey in Bemidji State University, Minnesota with the Beavers, and his minor hockey in Wawota.

The game got off to a fast start as Cooper Fox opened the scoring at 00:07 assisted by Ben Johnstone. The Cougars added to their lead with goals by Dakota Rose, Devon McGonigal, and Ben Johnstone. It was then Mitchell Morrison’s turn, firing home a shot from the faceoff circle, for his first of the year, which proved to be the game winning goal.

Jesse Matthewson scored late in the period building a 6-0 lead to end the first frame.

The Combines pushed back with Brayden Rowley opening the second period scoring with a wrister, going top shelf from high in the slot.

Dakota Rose and Brett Turgeon then replied before Duane Hislop netted the Combines’ second goal. Cougar Mark Shaw scored his first of the season and Dakota Rose completed the hat trick and added his fourth of the game, putting Carlyle up 11-2 at the end of the second.

The Combines came out hard again in the third with goals by Jared Taylor and Haydon Cutler chipping away at the Cougar lead. Jesse Matthewson ended the scoring for the Cougars, jumping on a loose puck high in the slot drilling it home to end the scoring making it an 12-4 final for the home squad.

The 50/50 draw raised $1,593.75 for KidSport and was won

by Janessa Wilson, who generously donated half of her winnings back to KidSport. Also winning on the 50/50 draw, donated by the Office Bar & Grill, was a pizza won

by Nancy Matthewson and Darlene Morrison won a free oil change from Merit Ford.

Former Mustang pins down medal

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Tianna Kennett of Manor began wrestling in high school in the ninth grade as a Manor Mustang. She became interested after watching her younger sister compete. The high school coach, Monty McNaughton, invited Tianna to join the school wrestling team, and so began her wrestling career.

Wrestling in the High School Provincial Program she won provincial titles in 2013 and 2014 and in her senior year 2015.

Having won provincial titles she qualified for the Canadian National Team, which she was a member of in 2013 and 2014.

It was during this

time she was able to make connections making the decision to move to Calgary. She enrolled in nursing at the University of Calgary and competed to become a member of the Dino’s university wrestling team.

During her four years of studies, she was able to win Club Nationals in her first two years.

She also won Canada West University Athletics Association titles twice in her first and fourth years of competition. She added a silver medal at the Youth Sport Competition in Calgary in the spring of 2019. Tianna continued to compete as a member of the Dino’s after graduating with a degree in nursing in April 2019.

She qualified again this year for the fourth time

to represent Canada in the U23 World Championships in the 56k weight class, held in Budapest, Hungary. The competition took place on October 30 and 31.

She won three of four matches, competing against athletes from India, Moldova, Serbia and beating the competitor from Belarus for the bronze medal. This was her first medal at the world level and she came home with not only the medal, but also now a belief in herself and a trust for the coaches and the process.

Social media does not assure accuracy

By Calvin Daniels While there is much that is positive about social media in terms of staying connected with friends, or being in touch with like-minded people in terms of hobbies and interests, it is far from an ideal medium for news about happenings in our world.

Far too quickly discussion can become little more than rhetoric, hyperbole, and outright nonsense. Wading through the straw to find the kernels of truth and fact can be a tiring process that frankly is often not worth the effort.

We may live in a time that affords us the greatest access to information ever, but it does not assure us of its accuracy.

In that regard we need to be particularly vigilant in assessing what we take in in terms of background and fact on issues, if we are to have an informed position.

That is where I feel we are today in terms of western alienation.

The squeaky wheel of

those suggesting separation are getting play, but whether they should be is another question.

They rail against the transfer payments that go to Quebec, which in the short contest of the last decade look extreme.

But, the grey hairs in my moustache mean I have lived long enough to remember Saskatchewan happily cashing transfer cheques headed this way for years too. Every province has received payments at one point.

That is the essence of being part of a confederation where a mechanism to spread wealth exists.

And of course equalization payments do not involve wealthy provinces making direct payments to poor provinces.

The money comes from the federal treasury.

Then there is the current downturn in the Canadian oil sector, and the displeasure with the inability of pipelines now seen as the sector’s salvation built.

Of course when oil was $100 a barrel a decade or so ago, pipelines were not exactly on the

front burner for anyone even if the industry was flush with funds to get it started then.

That is not to suggest the oil sector in the west is not hurting.

However, having a sector hurting is not suddenly a new thing.

Farmers with a few grey hairs will remember farm gate stands to stop foreclosures when bank interest rates exploded to 20 per cent and gutted the farm sector.

People might recall Uranium City, a mining community of some 5000, that today is home to less than 100, a mine closure gutting the community.

The Maritimes is littered with closed fish processing plants, closed when cod numbers declined and a moratorium on the fishery was instituted in 1992.

Can Pro-Life save the world?

Life is so precious!

The careless disregard for it chokes us to tears.

Just yesterday I saw a young child walking home from school. I thought, “She reminds me of my granddaughter.” Then I realized what it was. Her shoulders and arms were moving with so much energy that she looked like she was riding a bike.

There is a famous Talmud quote, “Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire.” The reverse of this saying is illustrated, sadly, in the news of this past September.

On September 19, 2019, Eric J. Scheidler, Executive Director of Pro-Life Action League shared a sad story with me: “Dear Ken, I just got back to my office after leading a prayer vigil outside the Will County Coroner’s office in Joliet, Illinois. I prayed with 80 pro-lifers from the area in solidarity with the 2,246 aborted babies now in the coroner’s custody.

“You’ve probably heard that these bodies were recovered from the home of deceased abortionist Ulrich Klopfer.

He operated three abortion facilities in Indiana before losing his medical license in 2016.”

Scheidler goes on to discuss what the ultimate fate of the bodies of these aborted children might be. These 2,246 abortion victims were killed between the years 2000 and 2002. Had they lived?

Picture 2,246 seventeen to nineteen-yearolds starting college or jobs, falling in love and getting engaged. As a grandfather I am saddened at the demise of this village of young people and the joy and hope they might have represented.

We will not be seeing their children skipping home from school.

Will we even mourn their absence? Saving just one life gives us hope! On September 20, 2019, President of Human Coalition Brian Fisher shared the following story: The mother of a funloving little boy named Major chose life for him five years ago by choosing not to have an abortion. The Continuum of Care program has helped this mother enjoy seeing Major put on his

backpack and board the bus for his first day at school.

Pro Life supporters hold that life begins at conception, when the egg is fertilized. A pregnant woman is carrying a baby and at birth will deliver a baby, not a fetus.

Much progress is being made in respecting the value of human remains and upholding the sanctity of human life. The U.S. Supreme Court in May upheld an Indiana provision requiring burial or cremation following an abortion or miscarriage at a medical facility.

“The state of Indiana feels that fetal remains should be treated with the same dignity and respect that is usually given to deceased humans,” said a spokeswoman for Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill. (Chicago Tribune September 20, 2019).

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Texas attorneys asked a federal appeals court Thursday to revive the state’s requirement that fetal remains from abortions and miscarriages at health care facilities be buried or cremated. (September 5).

Changing my world

By Linda Wegner Lately I’ve been cleaning out my office.

After combing through a quarter-century of published articles and studies, I was ready to toss it all out and forget about saving what I’d deemed essential. So glad I didn’t and here’s why.

This morning, on my routine bus ride, while musing on what would be my theme for this week’s article. I came up with a vague outline: Making a difference by a simple act of kindness. I tucked that back in my mind as I returned to sorting “stuff”. That’s when I came across a special assignment paper, I’d written for a writing course I look many years ago. The title? “How one Christian writer can change the world.” Now that’s one comprehensive topic!

Scanning through, I noted the specific impact individual writers have had on my life and my work. The beauty of disciplines was one; the exposure and taunting of my prejudices, another; and, “breathing thoughts of God into my spirit” yet another. I admit I was taken aback by my observations but then returned to my bus-

thought.

Next morning, an international student got on the bus with a transfer in hand. The driver politely informed her that it wasn’t valid. She looked stunned. That’s when a fellow passenger got up and paid her fare.

Her gratitude was immediate.

Then later that day I was the recipient of an act of kindness. Waiting in the doctor’s office

for a procedure, I heard that he was running late. With one patient ahead of me, booked for a 30-minute appointment, I said, “Oh, no. It will be dark then and I don’t drive in the dark.”

Without hesitation the lady offered to trade appointments with me.

Tillie Ann Palendat 1932 - 2019

Tillie passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the Deer View Lodge, Wawota, SK at the age of 86 years.

Tillie was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Olive Brayford (nee Daniels); brother Ted (Myrtle); sisters, Ada (Stan) and Amy (Lionel); parents-in-law, Louis and Aline Palendat; brothers-in-law Ivan (Joan) Palendat, Octave Palendat and Stuart Seivewright and one nephew Kenneth Drewicki.

Tillie will forever be remembered by her husband of 65 years, Wesley; daughter Darcy (Larry); grandchildren, Tye (Cayla) and Jessie (Jarrett); great grandson Huxton; sister Mildred Seivewright; brotherin-law Wilbur (Donnie) Palendat; sister-in-law Muriel Palendat and numerous nieces and nephews.

Report from the Legislature Dan D’Autremont, MLA for Cannington Your Saskatchewan Party government is committed to reducing the length of time people are waiting for surgery.

Reducing surgical wait times has long been a priority for our government, dating back to the successful Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative which took the longest surgical wait times in Canada to among the very shortest.

Wait times in Saskatchewan have been increasing again due to additional patients needing surgery, not due to fewer surgeries being performed in Saskatchewan. We will work to improve wait times for patients through $10 million in new funding.

Approximately 1,700 additional surgeries will be performed before the end of March 2020. These surgeries include cataracts, hip and knee replacements, gynecological surgeries, dental, and ear nose throat procedures.

The number of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) cardiac procedures will also grow by 60 per cent. TAVI is an option for patients who require aortic valve replacement and are not candidates for open-heart surgery.

To meet the March 2020 target, the Saskatchewan Health Authority will increase surgical hours in hospitals and also increase contracted volumes with third-party facilities. While the majority of surgeries will occur in Regina and Saskatoon where some of the longest wait times exist, they will be expanded to other centres as well.

In addition to action on surgical waits, we have unanimously passed amendments to The Tobacco Control Act. This allows the province to move quickly to ensure regulation of vaping and vaping products is in line with existing tobacco legislation.

Introduced on November 5, the amendments in Bill 182 will: • restrict the sale of vapour/e-cigarette devices and products to individuals 18 years of age and older; • prohibit the display of vapour/e-cigarette products in a retail business where young persons have access; • restrict the use of vapour/e-cigarette products in and around public buildings, including schools and school grounds, in the same manner as our provincial tobacco legislation; • prohibit the sale of vapour/e-cigarette products from specified facilities such as amusement parks, arcades, and theatres where youth frequent; and • restrict advertising of vapour/e-cigarette products in the same manner as tobacco products by prohibiting advertising signs and promotional signs in areas where young persons can enter.

Quick passage of this legislation demonstrates how important it is to further protect our youth from vaping. We look forward to consulting with partners and health stakeholders on the regulations and how best to address flavoured vaping products.

In the coming months, the Ministry of Health will proceed with the necessary supporting regulations to address both the restrictions on vaping and vaping products and the enforcement. New signage prohibiting vaping will be made available for public buildings, retail locations and school properties.

It is anticipated that The Tobacco Control Act amendments and supporting regulations will be in force in early 2020. We have invested over $1.6 billion into needed health care infrastructure. These funds have allowed our government to open five new or replacement hospitals, 13 long-term care centres, and fund 20 additional major capital projects.

Earlier this year, our government announced that the Weyburn Hospital replacement project and the Prince Albert Victoria Hospital redevelopment project will be entering their final planning stages.

Anderson, who now lives in Regina, grew up in Corning. Saskatchewan. She spent time in university, married and moved to Carlyle starting a family. While in Carlyle she was a local entrepreneur; starting a carwash, a recycling depot and renting shop space.

She became a certified “life coach’ and moved to Regina. There she pursued her passion to help others make a difference in their lives.

She currently has her own private practice, continuing to help people through the challenges and changes they face through life’s journeys.

On Thursday, Nov. 7, students and staff of Gordon F. Kells High School held a Remembrance Day Service. RCMP, Air Cadets, Legion members and Ladies Auxiliary were part of the service. Students from Carlyle Elementary School also attended the service.
