Lions Park ready for season

Carlyle and District Lions Club member Gord Paulley is very pleased with the facilities the park provides to the community of Carlyle.

The Town of Carlyle is home to Lions Park, which is located on the south side of the community.

The park has seen many improvements over the years and is a well-maintained multi faceted facility that provides outdoor activities to the community.

On May 16 volunteers did a thorough cleanup, repainted structures where needed and a general sprucing up throughout the facility to get ready for this season.

The park has six ball diamonds, a batting cage, soccer fields, 14 campsites, and bathroom facilities (wheelchair accessible), the Crescent Point Leisure Complex with a swimming pool and hot tub, a children’s play park and a walking path.

Dogs are welcome and each owner must clean up as needed if using the park to walk their dog(s).

There is a pavilion that is a multi use structure with a roof, that can house a band, hold weddings and can be utilized for a beer garden during scheduled events.

The walking path was the idea of the Carlyle Homespun Committee, who provided the funds to build it and is now maintained by the Carlyle & District Lions Club,it was lengthened last year to one kilometre. The Homespun Committee added 10 new decorative iron benches along the path for everyone’s enjoyment using the park.

Camping is $32.00/night and includes water, electricity and firewood. Anyone wanting to book facilities at the park can call 306-5776600 and those wanting more information of the services available can call or visit the Carlyle and District Lions Club Facebook page.

Carlyle Homespun Committee has provided 10 new artistic iron benches along the one kilometre walking path in Lions Park on the south side of Carlyle.

Oxbow’s school happy for nutrition grant

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury The Oxbow Prairie Horizons School is one of 10 schools from across Saskatchewan to receive a $10,000 grant to support student nutrition through the Mosaic Extreme School Makeover Challenge.

Learning support teacher Valerie McNab, who shares responsibility for the breakfast program with student services co-ordinator Brenda Miller, said the money will be used for the school’s breakfast program and other initiatives.

Oxbow Prairie Horizons has had a breakfast program for about five years, and they serve breakfast every morning in some way.

Fresh fruit is available to all on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, while toast, yogurt, cereal and fruit are served on Wednesdays. The days in which fruit is served attract about 75 kids every day. The Wednesday menu gets 60-75 kids each day.

“I think the kids really enjoy it,” McNab said. “In the elementary end, when she (Miller) is serving fruit … there’s always lots of visiting.”

It’s a wonderful way to start the morning, and it’s a nice social time on Wednesdays, to sit down and have meal with friends.

The money from Mosaic will also allow them to have the larger breakfast on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and then serve fruit on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“The thought behind that is welcoming them back to the school after a weekend with a meal, and then seeing them off before the weekend with a meal as well through a hearty breakfast.”

An afterschool program will also be supported with the money. The school is going to partner with the Expressway Family Centre, which operates out of the school, to have cooking programs and have a chef come in to guide kids on food preparation and

choices. Parents will also be invited to participated.

McNab said most students have a good day at school if they’ve had a good breakfast.

“If we can fill a belly, it’s easier to fill a brain,” she said. “That would be our main goal behind this, is preparing people to learn, promoting some social skills at the same time, and some fellowship with their fellow students.”

The school has received money from Vermillion Energy on multiple occasions in the past for their breakfast program, and they have received money from Farm Credit Canada as well.

Mosaic is pleased to support Oxbow and other schools in the province.

“The success of this program grows year over year, thanks in large part to the commitment from educators in our province,” said Sarah Fedorchuk, the Mosaic Company’s vice-president of public affairs and government relations for North America.

“Now in its 14th year, Mosaic remains committed to funding the Mosaic Extreme School Makeover Challenge to ensure 10 more schools can provide healthier school environments for their students.”

The grants across the province will support projects that have goals including building or renovating kitchen, garden and other indoor and outdoor facilities; enhancing, through courses, clubs and other efforts, the learning opportunities available for students, families and communities about topics including nutrition, cooking, Indigenous traditional knowledge and environmental sustainability; promoting reconciliation and celebrating cultures; and implementing or increasing breakfast, lunch and other programs.

Schools from across the province submitted their projects to compete for the total of $100,000 in prizes, provided by Mosaic.

Things may not be as bad as they seem

By Murray Mandryk If it doesn’t seem as if the news is getting better on the COVID-19 front, it’s likely at least partly due to how stressful days take their toll on our perspectives.

Right now, it does seem as if there was no bad luck in 2020, there would be no luck at all.

But what we can’t lose sight of the reality that bad things happen all of the time. We need to consider that because it isn’t especially productive to allow them to play on our already existing anxieties.

Take the Take the Victoria Day weekend crash of the Snowbirds jet in Kamloops as it was wrapping up “Operation Inspiration”, the nationwide fly-by from the Moose Jaw-aerial team that was supposed to gesture of thanks to lift our spirits during this pandemic.

The sad accident claimed the life of Capt. Jennifer Casey, a Snowbirds team member and former journalist turned information officer for the elite flying unit.

Casey was a Halifax resident and now joins a sadly growing list of Nova Scotians who tragically lost their lives in the past couple months as this pandemic as taken hold.

Prior to her death there was the mass killing of RCMP Constable Heidi Stevenson and 22 others. And the helicopter crash off the coast of Greece killed Sub-Lt. Abbigail Cowbrough of Halifax and three others.

These are sad events, but not all tragedies across the country or halfway around the world need be attributed to COVID-19.

It’s human nature to want to see patterns where they don’t exist. And it’s even more human to fear what we don’t understand.

“What we know about stress related to COVID-19 is that it revolves around a lot of the unknowns — and there remain many unknowns, many questions,” Gordon Asmundson, a University of Regina clinical psychologist and professor, told the Regina Leader-Post’s Heather Polischuk.

“It’s not like it’s a threat that we can see.”

One other big problem goes beyond the reality that seems even easier these days to identify and then dwell on the problems.

There are a lot of decisions being made in a condensed timeframe, feeding the old adage: When things go wrong, they really go wrong.

Just as the virus seems well in hand, and as of the writing of this, there were a 16 active cases in the entire southern half of the province, we saw a major outbreak in La Loche and the north that still accounts for 107 active cases.

This disparity between the north and south only seems to be adding to the stress and frustrations.

Northerners are understandably upset by road blockades preventing needed travel to get groceries and other lives’ necessities.

And, out of an abundance of caution, the Saskatchewan Health Authority has shut down emergency services in 12 rural Saskatchewan hospitals.

This has rightly angered rural residents, most of whom haven’t seen a COVID-19 case in their vicinity in at least a month.

“I’m not impressed with it whatsoever. I’m quite shocked that they would do that,” Davidson Mayor Tyler Alexander told The Canadian Press’s Stephanie Taylor.

One can certainly understand why. In the middle of seeding and going into summer where bad road accidents tend to be more frequent, closing the nearest emergency service is a frightening prospect.

For a rural-based government that lobbied mightily for the creation of STARS emergency helicopter service in this province, there does seem to be a disconnection in the decision-making process.

There again, with a million decisions to make at least a few of them are bound to be questionable.

Things aren’t great right now and won’t be for a while.

But with dwindling active cases names, they are getting better. We can’t let the stress get the best of us.

Wanting more than a checkered flag It is massive. Inside its oval you could fit Yankee Stadium, the Rose Bowl, Churchill Downs, the Colosseum and all of Vatican City.

It is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, site of the most watched single day sporting event; the Indianapolis 500. Held on Memorial Day weekend in Indiana, the Indy 500 features the 33 fastest qualifying cars racing Shelley Luedtke around a 2½ mile oval at speeds of 220 mph to see who will grab the checkered flag, pocket a big payday and go down in history as a champion of this storied race.

I was so pumped for this year’s race. Even more than usual. I can’t say for sure how old I was the first time I watched the race, I only know I don’t remember a time when I didn’t. The well of memories run deep since this was an event I would watch with my dad. After he passed away my sister and I continued the tradition and I freely admit there is very little that could ever cause us to miss it.

But this year was going to be even better because I’d be watching through the lens of having seen the venue. My husband and I were in Indianapolis last August and although it wasn’t the reason for being in the city, there was no way I was going to miss out on a trip to the speedway. We took the tour, completed a lap of the oval and (almost) carried on the tradition of kissing the bricks. The speedway is affectionately known as The Brickyard since the original track was made of 3.2 million bricks. It was long ago re-surfaced but the start/finish line maintains the original 1909 bricks. I couldn’t bring myself to actually touch the bricks with my lips but I got as close as I could without actual contact.

So this past Sunday was supposed to be race day and I was to be looking at the track, the stands, pit lane and pole with far more informed and appreciative eyes. Mysister and I would be wearing new merchandise because, yes…I bought the t-shirts. But

the Indy 500, like every other event, has been postponed. (They re-broadcast last year’s race on Sunday. Yes, I watched it. Let the eye rolling begin.)

I don’t know any others who follow this race. Despite viewing numbers in the millions, no one I know even talks about it. In fact, people have questioned my fascination with it since all they see is the monotony of drivers going round and round; lap after lap. They’re not wrong. But what they miss is that you never know what might happen on each subsequent lap.

Those edge of your seat moments were going to be all the more palpable because I’d been there. I’d even experienced some racing. Not the big race of course, but on one of the two days at the speedway (yes, we went twice—my husband is a saint) we took in a day of racing that included events for vintage cars. I heard the roar and felt the rush. I took it all in and stored it all up. I was ready for May. So were the drivers, mechanics, crew chiefs and managers. They had a race plan that every member of the pit crew prepared and practiced. Yet as much as they knew what their strategy was, they were aware that, like everything in life, it would require flexibility and adaptation to respond to what happened in real time.

Just when we find a way to maneuver with precision, we are tossed unexpected caution flags. There are interruptions that require course corrections, and sometimes we will be forced to move at speeds faster than we are comfortable with, or slower than we would wish. Mistakes will happen that will cause problems and pitfalls. But we continue on through the curves and straightaways, lap by lap, day by day, adjusting and adapting to whatever comes next, and acknowledging those on the track with us making it possible.

Because at its core more and more of us are learning that it’s not about any trophy we might win or pay cheque we can cash, but far more about the people who are part of our pit crew, helping us navigate whatever comes next. That’s a far bigger prize than any checkered flag will ever be. That’s my outlook.

GARDENING TIPS 3 climbing plants for your garden Climbing plants lend a whimsical look to your property. They’re also ideal for hiding fences and creating privacy in your yard. Here are three beautiful vines that will undoubtedly look great in your garden.

1. Climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris) Once this vine reaches maturity, which may take up to five years, depending on the climate, it produces delicate white flowers. Its dark green leaves turn yellow in the fall, and the bark turns red in the winter.

Climbing hydrangea can grow in shady areas, but will flower more in the sun.

2. Hops (Humulus lupulus) Though ideal for covering a pergola or trellis, beer lovers will likely appreciate growing their own hops for entirely different reasons.

If you’re planning on harvesting the cones to make your own home brew, make sure you choose a female plant.

Also, know that hops is part of the Cannabaceae family, meaning that this plant may give off an aroma similar to marijuana, its close cousin.

3. Boston ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) This beautiful vine looks great all year round, but will really

turn heads in the fall. That’s when its green leaves become a brilliant red. Despite its name, Boston ivy is actually native to Asia.

People growing indigenous plant gardens will want to opt for Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) instead. It’s native to most parts of North America and just as lovely as Boston ivy.

While vines can make a lovely addition to your landscaping, it’s best to avoid letting creepers grow up your home’s walls. They can cause damage to the structure and be difficult to remove. Consider placing a trellis in front of a wall instead.

Psoriasis vulgaris, commonly known as plaque psoriasis, is a non-contagious and chronic autoimmune skin condition. It usually presents on the skin as raised, inflamed red lesions or plaques covered with a silvery-white scaly layer that easily fla¬kes off.

Symptoms Although they can manifest anywhere, lesions commonly appear on the scalp, knees, elbows and torso.

Affected areas of skin are likely to become sensitive and prone to inflammation and bleeding. The lesions can also be painful or itchy.

The severity of psoriasis is determined based on how much of the body is affected: mild (less than three per cent), moderate (from three

to 10 per cent) and severe (more than 10 per cent).

Management Psoriasis can’t be cured.

However, the following treatments can help manage symptoms: • Topical corticosteroids, vitamin D and moisturizers (mild cases) • Different forms of UV phototherapy (moderate cases) • Systemic agents, including immune suppression drugs, biologic immunomodulators and vitamin A (severe cases) Unfortunately, phototherapy and systemic agents come with significant side effects. The former increases the risk of developing a variety of skin cancers while patients treated with the lat-

ter need to be closely monitored for medication toxicity.

ACCESS TO PHOTOTHERAPY Despite its effectiveness, access to phototherapy can be limited for some people. Therefore, it’s common for patients to visit tanning facilities with booths that emit UVB light as a way to treat their psoriasis. However, it’s important to be aware that booths emitting UVA light may not be effective. Additionally, patients should always disclose any form of self-treatment to their doctor.

The Alida community extends sincere sympathy to Odette (Laurent) Cruywels and Real (Jeannette) Wolensky on the death of their brother Armel Wolensky who passed away May 13 at the age of 67 years. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date when circumstances allow. Condolences are also extended to all members of the Wolensky family.

Do hope you all had a great long weekend. It wasn’t every different from any other weekend around this farm. Men were still busy in the field with the seeding and in turn that keeps us busy chauffeuring them around whenever and wherever needed and of course keeping them well fed is important. We are on the downhill side and can almost see a light at the end of this spring operation – oh joy! We have been fortunate not to receive any of the forecasted rain showers, which right now is not wanted – fields are wet enough as yet and guys want to get finished and they are dodging enough wet spots as it is. Another week one should start to see the end and can then begin the next farming operation. Oh we did receive a little rain over the weekend and it drizzled most of Sunday, which was good for the garden. Hopefully it won’t hold the farming end up too long as it would be nice to see the end soon.

Hubby has also kept himself busy with planting his garden spot with potatoes, carrots, corn and spinach. While he was at it he put in three rows of potatoes in my garden and I had two good “garden fairies” come to my rescue and continued on and finished planting the small seeds. Now I just have to get

out and transplant the vegetables that I purchased from the greenhouse. Well the good fairy came again and actually transplanted the veggies just before the shower and cool cloudy weekend, great weather for the little plants – now I can say our garden is up lol. Once that is complete one can sit back and watch all the things grow (especially the weeds). While we were at the greenhouse the other day we also purchased our bedding plants of flowers and as usual I seem to get carried away (ha ha). This little job of planting the flowerpots and plots I can work at that in sprints as my old knee and back can take. It just doesn’t pay to get older each year, and I haven’t figured it out yet how to reverse that step. I’ll keep trying.

Oh another thing – I HATE those wood ticks – yeah they are out in full force and for some reason they just love me – Drat the luck. Check yourself carefully whenever you come in from outside, those little critters can sure hitchhike their way right along with you. I TRULY HATE THEM TO PIECES. I was informed the other day that Emmett Swallow had been in a serious vehicle accident on May 10 and was taken to Regina hospital via STARS from Oxbow. Now the report is that he has had his operation and is recovering much better than can be expected – which is very good to hear. I do believe that he is now at home and will proceed with his long recovery from there. We wish you the best, Emmett and Get Well soon.

I’m so glad to hear that Margaret (Boodie) Lemieux is now out of the hospital now and recover-

ing from her unfortunate mishap. Take care Boodie.

Oh yeah – It’s beautification time – the Centre Street flower pots are out and ready for you, the good Samaritans to step forward and take on a pot. Show off your artistic skills and make our town look its best throughout the summer. There are 10 pots waiting for you – just stop at the Post Office, give Linda your name and pick out a pot. They surely do make Alida a welcoming site. Appreciate your support.

Again it’s fairly quiet around, of course most of are busy with farming, gardening and lawn mowing, while others are still being cautious, only going out to pick up their mail or some groceries, just the essentials really. Phase One of Reopening is on the roll and Phase Two has now opened after the long weekend.

Phase Three is to open June 9 if all continues to go well. In the meantime folks let’s remember – to keep physical distancing – stay healthy – be safe and take care. We will get through this together. With the rain showers some people decided to pay their campsite a visit, but understand that it rained all day on Sunday at the Park so they came home early, but it was still a break from home.

Hair stylists back behind the chair

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Phase II of the Government of Saskatchewan’s reopening began on Tuesday, May 19 and seen many local businesses in Carlyle open to serve customers.

Hair salons and barbershops in the area were ready to lower ears, under the new restrictions and guidelines they were given to operate under.

Levi Cullum at Big Daddy’s Barbershop has seen loads of home cuts, mom cuts and girlfriend cuts, so customers are very grateful for the reopening and Cullum is booked solid.

In accordance with government regulations, all clientele will be required to make appointments and will be allowed into the salons at the time of their appointments. All staff will be required to wear a mask and it is up to the salon if the customer is required to. Customers will be required to wait in their vehicles and the stylist will text or have a system for you to follow when it’s okay to enter the salon for your appointment.

Some of the salons needed to move chairs and reorganize their shops to provide adequate room for physical distancing guidelines.

Marsha McLean at Salon 206 referred to the changes as a “new beginning”, adhering to the changes at the salon to do business in the industry going forward.

Alicia Brown at New Dimension Hair Studio has taken to wearing scrubs, which she changes into upon arriving at work and then changing back to street clothes at the end of the day.

All salons must practice deep cleaning methods, which means that they are required to wipe down between customers, as well as a host of other tasks.

This will mean fewer appointment times available and some stylists have extended their hours to be able to accommodate the many people who are in need of a makeover.

Some stylists said that the days of double booking and even triple booking methods in the past to keep chairs filled, had to be scrapped to ensure that they could meet all guidelines to open.

Each salon will discuss when an appointment is made what the situation is when coming to the salon. For instance, New Dimension Hair Studio is relaying to customers that all haircuts include a shampoo to cut down the chance of any spread and to make it easier to keep the salon clean, which will better protect all workers and customers.

Would any of the Homeschooling budding scientists like my Leaf Collection? I was brought up on the bald prairie (Tyvan); and was thrilled by the many trees and bushes in Maryfield that were new to me. My collection of pressed leaves will go in the garbage when I leave the Villa.

Charlotte found me tree books to identify about forty species here in the town. It is yours for the asking.

Time to walk and check on the garden progress in your back yards. Life in the Villa may be boring, but at least we are not sick.

Brittany Rowe receives CanSkate Coach Certification

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Brittany Rowe received her CanSkate Coach Certification on May 22.

Rowe who now resides in Redvers, grew up in Carlyle and started figure skating at the age of 12 when she joined the Carlyle Skating Club.

To receive certification a skater has to have completed a threeday CanSkate Course, which she attended in Regina in April 2019. Once completing the course the skater has three years to complete all the other necessary requirements laid out by CanSkate.

First up for Rowe

was completing the Mentorship Interview that is done with a Certified Skate Canada coach.

Next up the skater needs to produce two videos of oneself coaching two different CanSkate lessons. Rowe chose a “balance circuit” and a “control circuit” for her videos, which are then submitted to the SkateCanada website becoming part of the skater’s individual portfolio.

The skater’s portfolio also includes the mentorship interview and the skater’s coaching philosophy, coaching goals and the skating development philosophy that the applicant

will use once receiving certification, to teach the skaters.

Rowe was able to complete these requirements in one year.

Rowe took over the CanSkate coaching position at the Carlyle Skating Club in November of 2019 where she had prior experience working as a helper with other coaches for several years. She developed a keen interest in coaching through these experiences and plans to coach this coming fall in Carlyle. She will attend the Regional Coaching Course this September, in Regina, which will take three days to complete.

Tiana Dellalleau has been helping out with the CanSkate program in Carlyle for about five years.

She started out as a helper during the CanSkate sessions and is now a Program Assistant.

Tiana is always the first person on the ice ready to set up her circuit for that day. She does a fantastic job of setting up our skill circuits and always ensures that our skaters are having fun. She is always super respectful, reliable and knowledgeable and works really well with skaters of all ages and skills.

No matter how busy she may be she always makes it a priority to be at CanSkate. Whenever I need her to help out with our bridging program she is always up to do it. Tiana is always willing to help out wherever and whenever she can It has been a fantastic experience being able to see her go from a young Can-Skater to a very valu-

able Program assistant. I think that Tiana is very deserving of the Program Assistant award.

Rylee Brady receives CanSkate Award

Note: The following was submitted (in part) for Rylee’s nomination for the CanSkate Award by her skating coach, Brittany Rowe.

It is an absolute honour to be able to coach Rylee. She always gives her full attention and works hard during lessons. She always has a smile on her face and loves to be out on the ice. She skates three times a week and comes to our CanSkate sessions twice a week and also participates in our bridging program.

She takes part in private lessons and in our Advance CanSkate lessons and has recently completed her stage 4 badge and is working toward achieving her stage 5 badge.

Rylee always works hard. and whenever there is bridging or she has a private lesson, she always

wants to show off the newest thing she learned. She’s never afraid to try something new. She always gives full effort when in a lesson.

This past January she attended in three competitions where she was able to showcase her skills.

She went to Virden, Weyburn and Arcola where she had achieved multiple gold and silver ribbons. When at competitions she is always smiling, confident, and super excited to be there.

At 5 years of age, Rylee’s dedication, great work ethic, and determination is incredible and is most deserving of the CanSkater award. Her positive attitude, great work ethic and her dedication will take her far.

Congratulations Rylee, on receiving this most deserving award.

Sympathy to Jake and Carey Lamoureaux and family on the passing of Jake’s grandmother, Marthina (Marty) Lamoureaux who passed away recently in Valentine, Nebraska. She was 97 years old.

In a changing world we also have to change.

Some of our ways and rights have to be changed or modified. Those who are complaining about their rights need to realize that with rights come responsibilities. They are complaining about wearing masks, the limitations on group sizes and their right to attend church. There is a reason for these limitations and we need to realize that it isn’t always about us. We need to consider others. Many complain about the way our governments are handling the situation but remember they have not dealt with a pandemic either. Whether you agree with the governments or not, they are making their decisions with a lot more knowledge than we have.

I really don’t believe that COVID-19 is connected to a government conspiracy. Why waste your energy on all of this negativity and hatefulness? There are lots of positive and caring activities you can take part in.

Committee trying to bring food bank to Lampman

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury A committee has been formed in Lampman to bring a food bank to the town.

Representatives of the Lampman Family Centre, Browning 4-H Club, Lampman Public Library, Lampman School Community Council, Lampman Recreation and Lampman branch of the Royal Canadian Legion have come together because of the downturn in the economy.

They believe some individuals and families in the community could have difficulty providing basic needs.

They are asking that if someone would like access to the food bank, or have a hamper delivered to their home each week, to fill out a form and drop it off in an envelope at the grocery store or the town office in the black mail box, and say it is for the food bank. All names will be kept confidential.

If the committee knows of an individual or family in Lampman area who might need their help, they are asked to send an email to lampmanfoodbank@gmail.com.

“We just thought there would probably be a need out there, and the last thing we would want is to find out later that people needed stuff and they couldn’t get it, just because they didn’t ask,” said Maureen Ulrich, who is part of the food bank committee.

Committee members have seen the Lampman Lions Club do food hampers at Christmas time in the past, so they thought it was time to see if anyone needed help.

There has been an area in Lampman where people in need could pick up food, first at the town’s rink and now at the town office. But it hasn’t been used much since the move to the town office. Those food banks had non-perishable food items such as pasta, canned goods and sauces, to go with toilet-

“Sometimes we would go to the rink and it would be empty. How long has it been empty? This is just an easier way of figuring out when we need to restock so we can keep the supply consistent.”

People from the family centre and the library were working together to keep the food bank stocked.

Adding the other organization has allowed it to be a co-ordinated effort.

“Everyone is so willing to help. Gerry’s Store, we talked to them about taking in some of the forms and once we know how much we need and who needs it, we’ll set up a process whereby people can just walk into the store and pick up some extra canned goods, drop them in a box for the food bank, or maybe make a cash donation.”

Flyers have been sent out to the community so people know who to contact if they need assistance or want to support the food bank.

Ulrich said the committee would like to be able to drop off a hamper once a week, so that people don’t have to come in.

“We can tailor it to what you need, what are your allergies, what do you need as far as non-perishables,” said Ulrich.

The hampers would also be able to provide items such as toiletries, or even sanitizer or diapers or baby formula, since those items that can become expensive or difficult to get.

And they talked a lot about seniors and their needs, and being able to cater to them so they don’t have to worry about going out to shop during the pandemic.

“We will certainly be looking for donations, but at the moment, we’re not, though. What we’re looking for is people. There’s no point in asking people for a lot of items if there isn’t a need. We sense the need is there.”

Mechanization and the farm

By Calvin Daniels I must say I am always intrigued by the possibilities that mechanization offers the farm sector.

We have particularly seen its impact recently in terms of precision farming, where new technology is allowing for ever more precise application of crop protection products and crop nutrients which both help create the best growing conditions possible and limit cost through wasted applications.

But, it is likely we are still barely on the edge of what new technology will bring to the farm.

A little social media wandering recently brought me to an article on a drone that will, it is suggested, plant 40,000 trees in a month, and it was suggested that will mean one billion trees by 2028 (www.fastcompany.com).

Whether the numbers are precise is not as important as the realization of the continued advancement of drone technology.

The potential of drones to precisely apply herbicides, perhaps down to a weed-to-weed basis, would be massive, especially for pedigree seed producers and those growing higher value crops such as vegetables.

The same social media outing took me to a story at www.businessinsider.com The story was about a robot dog from Boston Dynamics’ herding sheep in New Zealand.

Having watched a few stock dog competitions, and recognizing the varied movements good stock dogs have to make, and adding in the natural pasture conditions of gopher holes, bushes, mole holes and stones, I don’t expect the border collie union is sweating their jobs just yet.

What that will mean for farming is at present potentially as diverse as developers and producers can dream.

Farmers have always been rather proficient at going into their shops when faced with a farm problem and hammering out a solution with some new implement or attachment.

While farmers might not have a shop where they can build the next generation of farm robot, they are capable of envisioning a use for robotic tech that can then be developed by others.

The potential of robotic and drone technology is going to move farming in new directions, helping deal with current issues, and of course creating some new ones. Robots and drones require operators who know what they are doing. Those are skills workers will expect to be well-paid for, and farmers will need to compete for those workers.

Still, the farm sector has always been one which adopts new technology rather quickly, and that makes it an exciting time for producers watching what may emerge next.

Roland (Rollie) Lucien Boulet 1927 - 2020

With sadness the Boulet family announces the peaceful passing of loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Roland (Rollie) Lucien Boulet, on April 29, 2020 in Olds, AB at the age of 92.

Born on the family farm near Storthoaks, SK on December 8, 1927, Rollie lived a long, full and happy life. He grew up in Dumas, SK surrounded by brothers Norman and Lucien and sisters Louise, Helene, Lucienne, and Therese, prairie skies and a curiosity about the world around him. Always proud of his French-Canadian heritage, Rollie received his secondary education at College Mathieu in Gravelbourg, SK. After completion of his studies, he began work as a labourer for the Canadian Paci�ic Railroad in Dumas at the close of the Second World War. He eventually moved to Alida, SK where he bought grain for United Grain Growers in the early 1950s. He began working for Saconny Vacuum, which would later become Mobil Oil Canada Ltd., in 1955.

While in Alida, he met the love of his life, Angelina Boutin, and they were married on July 3, 1954 at St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church in Cantal, SK. Together they raised a family of �ive children: Colette (Norman), Daniel (Penelope), Twain, Ailwin, and Toby (Bernadine). With Mobil Oil expanding their operations, Rollie and Angelina accepted a transfer to Alberta in 1963, and they courageously built a new life for their family.

Rollie became a Plant Operator for Mobil Oil at the newly built Wimborne, AB gas plant. They lived for a short time in Torrington (at the site of what would later become the World Famous Gopher Hole Museum -- a fact Rollie often enjoyed sharing), before settling in Olds in June 1964 in the same home they have lived in for the past 56 years.

The Boulet family grew to include six grandchildren: Salena (Jonathan), Michelle (Simon), Erin (Michael), Joel, Mariko, and Logan, as well as seven great-grandchildren: Kieran, Ryker, Moira, Myles, Andrew, Alex, and Henry. Rollie was immensely proud of them all.

After a long and valued career with Mobil Oil, Rollie retired in 1989. He then devoted his time to his passion -- woodcarving. This kept him busy throughout the year, making good use of two workshops: the garage in the summer and his basement shop in the winter. He was completely self-taught, and his artistry was remarkable. His Santa Claus carvings, Santa canes carved from Christmas tree trunks dropped off by family and neighbours, chess sets, bellows, and totem poles are cherished by many. Each was a unique, one-of-a-kind, Rollie Boulet creation.

In his retirement, Rollie liked to keep busy. A bicycle enthusiast and owner of many styles of bikes over the years, he could be seen riding around Olds through spring and summer. Rollie enjoyed chatting with friends and neighbours over coffee at Tim Hortons, and in the winter, he would cheer for his beloved Montreal Canadiens, the Olds Grizzlys, and his grandson’s junior hockey team, the Humboldt Broncos. As a talented storyteller, he could hold the attention of any audience. Rollie was an avid reader, with an ever-growing library from historical treasures to children’s pop-up books, which delighted his grandchildren. He installed a set of stage curtains in the playroom for the productions of Boulet Family Theatre; and he rarely passed on the chance to play or go for a bike ride with the young people in his life. His humour and his chuckle, his wit and his thoughtfulness will be greatly missed by all who know and love him.

Roland was predeceased by his parents Alexandre and Albertine; his sisters Louise, Helene, and Lucienne; and his grandson Logan.

In lieu of �lowers, donations to the Olds Rotary Athletics Park in Rollie’s name are welcomed. For information on how to make a donation, please contact: Town of Olds Community Services at 403-556-6981. A formal funeral and celebration of Rollie’s life will take place in Olds once the current pandemic and social distancing restrictions are lifted. Details will be announced at a later date. The Boulet family thanks everyone for your kindness in remembering Rollie, for your support, and for keeping his family in your heart.

NIGHT SKIES | JUNE AN ASTRONOMY ARTICLE BY JAMES EDGAR

The Moon is a few days from full phase as June begins. The 5th marks the beginning of eclipse season, as the full Moon is partially covered by Earth’s shadow in a penumbral lunar eclipse, although none of the event will be visible from North America. Jupiter and Saturn are travelling together this summer, so it’s not surprising that they both end up near the Moon at the same time. Watch for them in the early morning on June 8, when they’re within 2 and 3 degrees, respectively. A few days later, on the 12th, Luna meets up with Mars and Neptune, just before sunrise. On the 16th, Uranus is within 4 degrees of the Moon. On the 19th, Venus is occulted for observers in northern and eastern Canada, plus northern Europe and Asia. The Moon is new on the 20th, and, as expected, a little more than 14 days after the lunar eclipse, an annular solar eclipse occurs (because the Moon is at apogee on the 14th, at the most distant point in its orbit, it’s not quite capable of fully covering the Sun, thus an annulus surrounds the Moon in an annular eclipse). The eclipse begins in central and eastern Africa, across the Arabian Peninsula, northern India, southern China, and out into the Pacific Ocean. Dedicated eclipse chasers are hoping the COVID-19 pandemic doesn’t cancel their travel plans.

Mercury is visible in the western evening sky, achieving greatest eastern elongation on the 4th, well placed for Northern Hemisphere viewers until mid-month.

Venus is right in front of the Sun (inferior conjunction) in June 3, and by mid-month is the Morning Star before eastern sunrise. Watch for the occultation by the Moon on the 19th, a close approach for western Canadians.

Mars is an early morning object, gradually getting brighter and appearing larger. On the 12th, it is 1.7 degrees south of Neptune and 3 degrees north of the Moon.

Jupiter rises before midnight, promising to be a summer attraction at star parties. The Galilean moons always provide a pleasing experience for first-time viewers through a telescope. Their daily dance around the giant planet changes by the hour.

Three dates see double-shadow transits across the face of Jupiter, June 4, 11, and 18. The waning gibbous Moon joins Jupiter and Saturn on the 8th. Jupiter is retrograding throughout all of June, appearing to move westward.

Saturn, also retrograding, moves along with Jupiter in the late evening sky. It, too, promises to attract “Ooohs” and “Aws” for first-time viewers.

Nothing beats seeing the rings of the planet against the black backdrop of space.

Uranus is 4 degrees north of the Moon on the 16th, becoming increasingly difficult to see as the blue-green planet hugs the morning horizon just before sunup.

Neptune is also in the morning sky, and a difficult object because of the low angle of the ecliptic.

Neptune and the Moon bracket Mars on the 12th.

Summer solstice is on June 20 at 21:44 UT. James Edgar has had an interest in the night sky all his life. He joined The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada in 2000, was National President for two terms, is now the Editor of the renowned Observer’s Handbook, and Production Manager of the bi-monthly RASC Journal. The IAU named asteroid 1995 XC5 “(22421) Jamesedgar” in his honour.

My Jesus knows

By Linda Wegner During this enforced period of isolation, I’m indulging in two things I absolutely love doing: weeding and reading. I won’t bore you with my stories of weeding but I want to share the beautiful truths I’m learning as I take this enforced time of partial inactivity to read.

I’ve recently picked up a borrowed book (thanks, Bob) titled “The Jesus I Never Knew” In it, author Philip Yancey, opens by sharing his religious background and perception of Jesus. minded of these things brings me comfort on those days when I struggle with my emotions during this challenging time.

Rather than pull us down even more by reiterating negative feelings, I’d like to remind us of how Jesus comforted the organizers of that wedding by turning water into wine. He wept at the death of Lazarus but then shared His power and elation at the raising of Lazarus. Even the dread of physical suffering was tempered by the knowledge that His death would be followed by burial, resurrection and the establishment of the church, the glorious emotion of true and unfathomable love.

Helen Marie Schensney (nee Schmidt) 1933 - 2020

With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother Helen at the age of 86 years.

Helen was born to Margaret and Peter Schmidt on their farm near Revenue, Saskatchewan, the second youngest of ten children. She completed her schooling in Revenue, then moved to the town of Unity with her parents when they retired and left the farm. It was in Unity where she worked as a telephone operator that she met her future husband Paul, who worked at the Bank of Commerce there. They married in August 1957.

Over the next 30 years Helen embraced her role as the “banker’s wife” in the various Saskatchewan towns Paul’s work led them to. In Prince Albert they welcomed their �irst daughter, Norine, and in Blaine Lake, a second daughter, Cheryl. They also spent many happy years in the communities of Rouleau, Redvers and Kindersley, playing an active part in the community and making lifelong friendships in every stop. No matter where they were, Helen and Paul always remained close to their siblings and their large extended family.

Helen enjoyed a long and happy retirement with Paul spending summers at their home in Kenosee Lake and wintering in Arizona. Golf became a passion for Helen and she often played 5 mornings a week in the summer months. She was a loving grandmother to her 4 grandsons, baking untold batches of cookies and tarts for her boys. Helen loved to socialize and was happiest when gathering with family and friends for “happy hour”, a barbeque, and a game of cards.

Helen moved to East St Paul, Manitoba in 2012 to be closer to family during her husband’s �inal illness.

She missed Paul greatly after he passed away in 2013, but she was determined to live out her �inal years as independently as she could. While not able to venture too far from home in recent years, she still enjoyed connecting with friends and family by phone, and cheering on her favourite curlers and golfers on TV. Helen’s feisty spirit will be missed by all who knew her.

Helen is survived by daughters Norine (Quentin) Harty and Cheryl (Dave) Storrow; grandsons Paul and Jeremy Harty, and Jonathan and Luke Storrow; two great-grandchildren Emma and Carter Harty; and siblings Lena (Tony✞) Bosch, Vera (Frank✞) Bosch, Eva (Fred✞) Keller and Bart (Doris✞) Schmidt. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Paul, and her siblings Peter, Frank and John Schmidt, and Carrie and Mary Yochim.

A memorial service will be held at a later date once public health restrictions have been lifted. Expressions of sympathy may be left at arbormemorial.ca.

Area golf courses off to a busy start

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Golf courses in the area opened on May 15 under a veil of uncertainty, having to make many preparations in order to adhere to physical distancing restrictions set out by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).

Golf has always been known as the “Grand Old Game” and once again this statement is valid based on the start of the 2020 golf season.

Carlyle Golf Club opened on May 15 and similar to the other courses in the area were wondering what the bottom line may look like when it was all in the books come fall.

One of the restrictions was a reduced number of tee times meaning that courses would in general see about 10 less times a day available to book golfers.

At Carlyle Golf Club, clubhouse manager Martin Tourand is seeing positive numbers after the first week of operation, with the booking sheet full. “It is a situation everyone is looking to golf and that has actually been a boon to the course,” Tourand stated.

Carol Frecon, clubhouse manager at the Redvers and District Golf Course, responded to the golf traffic situation there, “Busy, very busy” and confirmed, “That’s exactly the same” when it came to availability of tee times making note that the desired time to golf there was late afternoon and evening times filling first with the likelihood of finding a booking better early in the day.

Tourand, who is operating with about half the staff at this time compared to last year and due to the food service being under strict guidelines ascertains, “Golfers are having no problems adapting to the new rules because it is one of the few activities people can do right now. On weekdays a person is more likely to find a booking more suitable to one’s schedule.” Both courses have take-out food in a limited capacity, and will adjust when the planned restrictions on restaurants are revised June 8.

With almost all tee times filled, revenue is up and staff costs are lower, staff will need to be added once other restrictions are lifted and courses are able to offer

more services.

Early bird memberships in Carlyle were down, as it was a wait and see situation due to the uncertainty of when courses would be able to open. The Carlyle course, upon opening, is now seeing most memberships being renewed and also several new memberships have been sold. Golf is one of the very few activities now available to people due to the pandemic that is outdoors to enjoy during the summer and is likely the reason for the uptick in new memberships.

Diane Friesen, who is clubhouse manager at Moose Creek Golf Course, is enjoying good participation at the links there, “The course is busy for this time of year,” she commented.

Generally in the past Moose Creek course did not use bookings and used a walk-on system for golfers. Friesen stated, “Having a tee time at Moose Creek is a first and seems to be working very well.” it is a change that the Moose Creek course had to transition to under the new guidelines set by the SHA. Pro Shop staffer Kevin Dyck was asked about the availability of times during the week, “The course is nice and steady during the day.”

All courses are looking forward to the season and no real problems have been experienced

so far in terms of the golfing public enjoying each of these facilities.

One other point that was stressed, was that anyone not being able to make their tee time to please let the clubhouse know as soon as possible so that others can book and enjoy the “grand old game”.
