Arcola Health Centre emergency services closed

By Kelly Johnson The Observer The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) announced the closure of emergency services at the Arcola Health Centre (AHC) in Arcola, SK, which came into effect on Thursday, May 14. The AHC has provided emergency services to the people of the area for decades.

The AHC was redefined as an Alternative Level Care facility under the Surge Plan set forth by the SHA in order to deal with the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic and as part of the state of emergency planning set forth by the Government of Saskatchewan.

When the reality of the pandemic came into fruition for the people of the province, a system was devised to help the province cope with the possible overwhelming of the health care system in the province that other countries were experiencing. To ensure that the spread of the virus could be contained, certain measures were put in place and at that time it was decided that the AHC would be used to look after non-COVID-19 patients. Also the SHA designated which hospitals would provide emergency services and which hospitals would take COVID-19 patients.

The closure has produced uncertainty to the people of the area and also to the health clinic in Arcola, which was set up in an effort to see that the AHC would stay viable for the citizens in the area it serves. With the redefining of the care service the AHC provides, it also means that the health care workers could be relocated to whichever location that is in need of the service or skills they can provide.

The Moose Mountain Health Care Corporation (MMHCC) was set up by the towns of Arcola, Lampman, Stoughton and the municipalities of Browning, Tecumseh, Brock, Moose Mountain, and Moose Creek to ensure that the AHC had the necessary number of doctors to maintain its status as a viable health care centre for this area. The MMHCC doctors share their services with the AHC. The AHC always sees a rise in the number of emergencies at this time of year due to the close proximity to the vacation destinations of Moose Mountain Provincial Park and White Bear Resort.

Security heightened for May long weekend

By Kelly Johnson The Observer White Bear First Nations added extra security on the First Nations located north of Carlyle.

The added check points were installed for the May long weekend and were scheduled to come down after the weekend.

The First Nations had already added extra security to the White Bear Lake Resort to prevent any unnecessary travel in and out of the area.

The check points are set up to limit access from Number 9 Highway into the First Nations and the

access to the White Bear First Nations at the east end of the main road into White Bear First Nations has been closed with concrete barriers at the Texas gate.

The White Bear First Nations and White Bear Resort has seen a very large influx of people on past May long weekends and Chief Nathan Pasap and the Council felt that it was very important to make sure that the measures they have put in place continued to keep both the First Nations and Resort permanent residents safe.

The original measures that were put in place on April 7 are in effect until May 30 will be revisited and evaluated as necessary at that time. Any updates and information can be found online at the White Bear Health Facebook page.

Chief Pasap stated on behalf of White Bear First Nations and Council members, “I would like to thank all the people affected for their understanding and co-operation during this time due to the pandemic.”

This will also affect the ambulance service to the communities in the region that it services. Each trip made will most likely be of a longer distance and

with all likelihood affect the availability of ambulance service.

This plan has an effect on all the health care centres on how they will be able to provide healthcare, Redvers and Kipling are now designated as COVID-19 facilities and will be open to provide emergency services. Weyburn and Estevan will also provide emergency servic-

es.

Everyone needs to be aware of these changes and know which facility you need to go to for the care you are in need of and it would be very wise to go to the SHA website “now” to have a clear understanding of available services and make a plan “now” so that you have a well thought out itinerary in case of an emergency.

White Bear First Nations added extra security at several points into the community for the May long weekend.

CLARIFICATION It was reported in the May 15 issue of The Observer that the Visitor Centre at Moose Mountain Provincial Park would open June 1st. To clarify, the Visitor Center will not be open this summer until there is more direction about Phase 4 in which it falls. It is also unknown at this time as to when the Administration Office can open to the public. It is only the campground and entry gate that are open June 1.

People can still call the Administration Office for questions regarding the park, but inquires about businesses at Kenosee opening should be directed to the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan or the updates by the provincial government instead of the Visitor Center.

No exercises, Bingo, or card table games. We had one singsong with Judy Skiba, sitting well apart, on a day when she was Bath Lady. My friend in the other hall phoned me.

Fred Krukoff , 88, has a bad case of Spring Fever. He NEEDED to plant something! He spaded up along wall of the southeast corner; and neighbors donated perennials, some of which are in bloom.

Lydia and Ward put a “Happy Mother’s Day” Card, (huge one) in the lounge window by the bird feeder, for Marianne.

Our phones were busy Sunday. The Sunshine Club, (children of the United Church, led

by Janet Lemon), made

a video of all their faces, sent online to Grandmas and mothers of the congregation. The first dandelion became a nosegay for my tablemate. “Don’t say no one gave your flowers for Mother’s

Day”.

Old hearts play out. Two more have us have gone to hospital.

We have one room for a newcomer when the shadow of Covid 19 has passed by.

Letter to the Editor RE: Arcola Health Centre Emergency Room Closure and Conversion to ALC Centre May 12, 2020 I have done everything Premier Moe has asked since March 19th when dealing with COVID-19.

He wanted me to stay at home, to wash my hands frequently, to not visit anyone, and to do the ever difficult job of teaching from home. And, I did everything he asked of me. You see, I am one of those immunocompromised. I have asthma so I was very worried and wanted to be extremely careful. I did these things to protect myself, to protect my students, and to flatten the curve so that this wonderful province that I love could reopen.

And, low and behold, all the sacrifices worked! We flattened the curve and as of May 4th Premier Moe started opening the province of Saskatchewan! After 7 long weeks at home, I felt proud and excited for the future. Visiting with family, seeing my students were top of my ‘to do’ list!

However, my excitement was short-lived.

Today, as Saskatchewan is opening, ironically, our much needed rural hospital’s emergency room is closing, as of May 14. And, my health is now more at risk than ever before!

Arcola Health Centre is being converted to an ALC facility! As Saskatchewan cases continue to decrease and our province opens up, this conversion plan does not make any sense. If we are flattening the curve and opening up our province why are we losing our much needed emergency room?

Why are we losing our hospital? I was under the impression that these hospital conversions were ONLY going to be phased in if a COVID-19 outbreak occurred. In fact, I’ve heard from the Health Authority employees that they were assured that these changes would not be happening, unless we had a major outbreak.

Arcola Health Centre (hospital) is one of the 12 rural hospitals slated to be converted, even though it is one of the busiest emergency centres for STARS. Arcola Hospital is one of the few surrounding hospitals where STARS is allowed to land right on the property, saving valuable time.

Not only do STARS patients depend on Arcola Health Centre but I depend on our hospital/ emergency, too. My asthma flares up every Spring and Fall and I have always been well looked after here. I have always felt safe, knowing that I can drive 10 minute and receive excellent care.

When I phoned Mr. Reiter’s office, our Health Minister, today, they suggested that I call 911 in an emergency, as a solution. I live 30 km from the nearest ambulance service so calling 911 just isn’t feasible. My other only option is to drive 65 km to the nearest emergency which, I guarantee you, will feel like eternity when I can’t breathe. I am very worried and I know that I am not the only one worried in our community.

Our whole community depends on our hospital and its emergency room. This is slated as temporary; however, I want the government to rescind this conversion plan for our hospital.

Even temporarily closing is and should not be an option. Our community needs our emergency and our hospital. I need our hospital and our emergency room, please!

Being in good company It was just over five years ago that the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox took to the field at Camden Yards to play in a stadium with no fans. It was the first time a major league game was played without a crowd in attendance; a decision driven by fears for public safety after unrest in Baltimore following a young man’s death while in police custody. While other games were able Shelley Luedtke to be rescheduled, the situation required one game go ahead, but without the cheers, jeers or applause of people in the stands.

The players involved described it as weird, and even painful, given what their city was going through. Without the type of noise they were accustomed to there was less chatter in the dugout, less excitement over big plays, and an unnerving clanking sound when foul balls hit the empty stands.

Sports leagues are trying to figure out what comes next as they deal with seasons that have been suspended due to the coronavirus and many wonder what, if any, schedule can be put together. Coaches, managers, owners and athletes are grappling with the question of how their sport can best resume safely, and without the presence of fans, since fans themselves are simply such a big part of the game.

Revenue to be sure, but something else, too.

I have always loved watching live sports events, whether it was my children on their school teams or the handful of times I’ve been able to cheer on my favorite professional franchises. It’s fun sharing in the emotion, the suspense, and the cheers that are unique to each team. You feel like you are part of something bigger as you take your cues from each other and feel the sense of excitement that ripples through the stands. You get caught up in it as it spreads. Without the fans, the atmosphere just isn’t the same.

reactions to joy, sorrow, pain, and even humor. If others are cheering, we are more likely to do so. If others are laughing, we probably will too. That’s the reason TV sitcoms have often used laugh tracks to generate a greater sense of amusement. We typically consider something more funny if others do as well and so we are more likely to laugh if we hear others chuckling.

Conversely, the lack of laughter can change how a joke is perceived. There have been several studies in which well-known scenes from classic TV sitcoms are played with the laugh track or live audience reaction removed. The level of humor was consistently rated less amusing when the laughter was edited out.

It’s not that we need others to gives us cues us as to what is funny, it’s simply that we find things funnier when we join in with others. To be honest, two of what I deem to be the funniest comedies in the last decade used no track at all, and in fact I think adding canned laughter would change the pacing and style that make it funny in the first place. It works, but studies say it works better when we hear others laugh. Does it mean we don’t find things as funny if we’re not cajoled into laughing? Turns out, not really. While many wished the laughter sound more spontaneous, survey subjects admitted it was still more enjoyable while laughing along with the sound of others, than having the laughter edited out.

A home run, a game winning goal or a wellcrafted joke requires skills of good preparation meeting the opportune moment. At its core it needs no one else but the athletes, the writers or the comedians doing the work. But without the fans, something huge is lost; the appreciation, participation and the enjoyment of others.

While our sense of humor is very much an individual trait, the expression of what we find funny is greatly impacted by the community experience. The more we laugh with others, the more enjoyable the moment, not only for ourselves but those around us, too. If it’s true that laughter is infectious, it’s the best thing we can be spreading right now.

That’s my outlook.

How to train your bird to talk

Would you like to teach your parrot, parakeet or other bird to talk? Here are some tips that may help.

• Start early. It’s best to train your bird when it’s young. You can teach an older bird to repeat what you say, but it’ll take more time and patience.

• Repeat the words often. It’s best to start with simple words and phrases like “hello,” “bye-bye” and the bird’s name.

• Speak excitedly. Saying the words in an excited

or sing-song tone is more likely to grab your bird’s attention.

• Be consistent. The more you repeat a word or phrase, the more likely your bird is to learn it. This goes for words you don’t want it to learn too, so try to avoid saying things you don’t want repeated.

• Use rewards. Each time your bird successfully repeats a new word, be sure to praise it and offer it a treat. This will encourage it to continue to learn.

Above all, be patient.

It may take years for your bird to learn to say a few words, and some never do, even breeds who are known to be talkers.

Prairie Dog Drive-In Theatre digs in for 40th season

By Kelly Johnson The Observer The Prairie Dog Drive-In Theatre in Carlyle has stood the test of time, becoming one of only a few drive-in movie theatres remaining in Saskatchewan.

It opened for its 40th season during the Victoria Day long weekend.

This year the theatre opened by showing Trolls World Tour, which is an animation production.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic there was some worry if the theatre would be allowed to open. The Saskatchewan Government just recently gave the thumbs up for the opening, and we all know that “the show must go on.”

The Prairie Dog has been operated by Ray Boutin and his wife Frances, with the help of their daughters, Simone and Janelle. They became the proprietors in 1997, purchasing it from the original owner who built and opened the theatre in 1980.

It is located on the flatlands north of Carlyle, adjacent to Highway 9, which is the gateway to the summer vacation resorts of Kenosee Lake and White Bear Lake.

The theatre was originally called the KenPar Cinema; Boutin changed the name to the Prairie Dog Theatre in 1998.

The first movie shown by Boutin was Liar Liar starring Jim Carrey and fittingly, it was screened on May 15, 1997, which was opening night for this year.

The drive-in theatre has provided entertainment for scores of movie buffs as well as for the Boutins. Titanic was one movie that drew a huge crowd; Boutin brought his 26-foot sailboat and parked it by the marquis sign for added effect.

Another memorable incident – which takes place at drive-in movies everywhere, as anyone would know that has patronized the outdoor theatres – involved hiding in the trunk. On this

particular night a brown sedan stopped a few miles north of the drive in, unknowingly in the view of a local farmer, who watched the alleged moviegoers pile into the trunk, leaving only the driver visible to negotiate the box office. Boutin received a call from the farmer and when the brown sedan pulled up the driver was informed that it was trunk check night at the theatre and all wound up being happy paying customers.

As well, drive-in movie-goers had been known to hide others things in the trunk, namely cases of beer.

In Saskatchewan it is illegal to consume these refreshments in a motor vehicle and on many nights an effort had to be made to calm the moviegoers and curb the partying customers.

After all this was a tradition in the province to load up the vehicle and make a night out at the movies.

The drive-in movie business has seen many changes, from fixed speakers that hung on the window, carbon arc projectors which you had to be licensed and certified to run, to the new modern projectors, which provide a digital quality picture for the viewer.

Alameda 4-H club is getting ready for a virtual sale

By Ana Bykhovskaia Estevan Mercury Despite all the changes and challenges, life goes on and the Alameda 4-H club would traditionally be getting ready for their annual show and sale. Due to the current provincial regulations regarding COVID-19 physical distancing, the 4-H show and sale committee has decided to host the Alameda Regional 4-H Sale as on online-only auction.

The format is totally new for the club, but the possibility of still having a sale is really exciting. Jason Frey, who is organizing the event, explained that it will be a horse race style finish auction broadcast on dvauction.com.

“It is a modern-day version of a silent auction. Buyers can scroll through and find the one they want to bid on and bid on it anytime from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on

June 13,” said Frey.

If someone is outbid, the prospective buyer will receive an email notification and then they can increase the bid if they so choose. After 7 p.m., the closeout will start. Every time when somebody bids, the sale will open for five more minutes. When five minutes are passed with no bidding, then the auction will be over.

“It could, in theory, go until 8-8:30 at night if people keep bidding.”

The steers will sell by the head this year instead of by the pound.

The amount that people bid is what they will pay. All steers will be weighed using the Chopper K Auction Mart scale within one week of the sale to give buyers an idea of what they weigh.

Since no big gatherings are allowed, every club member selling a calf this year will be required to make a one or two-minute video,

submit a picture ahead of time and upload it to the auction website for buyers to watch and make up their minds. In the video, they will need to tell a bit about themselves and their calves.

The committee plans to have 85 steers for sale this year. They will do a little bit of online advertising prior to the sale, but part of this responsibility also lays on the kids who are now getting their calves ready for sale with their parents’ help and guidance.

Frey noted that some members have been recently posting pictures of their progress working with calves online, in that way staying in touch with the club.

I forgot to mention the 75th anniversary on May 9 of the battle at

Vimy Ridge. This was one of the turning points in WWI. Four Canadian Corps joined together and from April 9-12, 1917 captured this area from the Germans.

There were many casualties. We need to remember and give thanks to all of those involved.

The last time I was to the library (6 weeks ago or maybe longer) I took out 11 books and have them read. When I was finished with them I looked around home for reading material (there was lots). After 6 more books I decided to read, “The Eyes of the Dragon”

by Stephen King. I am a Stephen King fan but for some reason avoided reading this particular book. I really enjoyed it and thought it was of his best. You can’t judge a book by its cover.

Quilting to help make wishes come true

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Megan Anderson of Carlyle is working on a special charity project for the Saskatchewan Chapter of the Make a Wish Foundation.

She was tagged by a friend on Facebook about an appeal for quilts that were especially needed by the Make a Wish Foundation. The Saskatchewan chapter is located in Saskatoon and Anderson knew that she could be of great help to the worthy cause. The Make a Wish Foundation provides a quilt to each child that is helped by the charity.

Anderson’s interest in quilting began at an early age watching her grandmother quilt.

Anderson always had an interest in the craft, starting in retail fabric store Sew and Sews in Carnduff, which at the time she worked casual-

ly. She joined the Bits and Pieces Quilting Club in Carlyle about 15 years ago, never losing her adoration of her grandmother’s crafting skills.

She began working for Sew and Sews in Carlyle about five years ago and is very thankful to Bev Thompson who taught her how to refine her quilting skills.

With her keen interest in quilting, she contacted the Make a Wish Foundation and began organizing to come up with a quilt donation.

The first hurdle she had to jump was finding a way to get the quilts to Saskatoon, which was easily overcome without any delay to her desire to help out.

Setting a lofty goal of 50 quilts, comfortable in having many contacts through her place of work and connections to the quilting club, she starting the project in

mid-February of this year and was planning to complete the project

by March 28.

Due to the pandemic that plan changed when all non-essential businesses closed, casing her to change the completion date twice, which is now scheduled for May 28.

At this time she has already collected 13 quilts and realizes the goal of 50 is possibly unobtainable. Every quilt that is supplied will go to a great cause and the effort will be well received and expressly appreciated.

She is collecting the quilts at her place of work, Sew and Sews in Carlyle, which reopened to walk-in traffic on Tuesday, May 19.

Any quilts being donated must be unused and made of new, non-recycled fabric and specifically twin-sized.

Oops – missed an early deadline scheduled on May 13 for the May 22 issue, but will just send a note that everything is about the same – quite – not seeing anyone unless they happen to visit grocery store same time as I do and then it’s just a quick greeting and one back on doing their own schedule. Oh, it will be so nice to be free to do a little more. However one is still best to be safe than sorry – so will just move along slowly.

It’s May long weekend on Monday, May 18 – hope you had a good one. Guys here are hoping that they’ll be able to

get back out in the field soon. Two evenings of rain as defiantly put a damper on things and a stop to the seeding, and hate to say but weather forecast doesn’t really sound good following the long weekend. With the ground as wet as it is it doesn’t take much moisture to put a stop to working out in the field.

Oh enough complaining – let’s just get on with it and move right along – before one knows it we’ll be wishing for moisture as it will be too hot and dry – just never satisfied.
