Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • It has been a challenging week for the RCMP and for Canada with the tragedy that occurred in Nova Scotia. We are a big country, however, we are so interconnected. As it relates to our Detachment we have a Member in Carlyle who is from that area of Nova Scotia, we have a Member in Carlyle that previously served in this area of Nova Scotia, we have a Member that previously served in Carlyle that is now stationed in the area and several Members have Troop Mates in Nova Scotia. In addition Heidi Stevenson has three Troop Mates that still serve in Saskatchewan and I know each of them personally. I was not planning on writing anything about this tragedy until I received a call from a representative of our local Legion requesting permission to lay a wreath on behalf of the Legion at our flagpole. This wreath has since been joined by flowers. The Southern Plains Co-op wished to bring our Detachment a food donation to show their support. They graciously agreed to make a donation in memory of our fallen colleague to our local food bank.

We are very touched and we appreciate the support and concern shown by the communities we serve. I can only say to those showing their support for our loss, thank you, thank you very much. Your sentiments mean more than I can describe.

• We understand you may be frustrated and annoyed if someone makes you disconnect your electronic gaming system, however, this frustration does not justify calling 911. In addition, if you need to talk to the RCMP, please don’t call 911. Call 4536707 or 310-RCMP. • We had a multiple hit alarm, however, it was false. An occupant was having extreme challenges in dealing with the alarm which is understandable if one has ever heard the noise

that can be caused by an alarm.

• We continue to monitor more and more people who are on release conditions. This includes people who are awaiting to be dealt with in court, those that have been dealt with and part of their sentence is to comply with conditions and in some cases individuals that are on parole.

• We received a call about a dog in a slough that might not survive.

Fortunately an individual retrieved it before the arrival of the Police.

I am certain a nice warm shower or bath was warranted after this challenging task was completed.

• Do you know what your licence plate number is? You should. In the past we have had people discover someone has stolen their licence plate and replaced it with a stolen licence plate. This is only discovered when the driver gets pulled over. Recently we had a report of a licence plate being stolen and we have now entered that information on to our national database.

• A social media battle ended up involving the Police. As we have often suggested, block people or ignore them.

• If you are calling Crime Stoppers please remember we don’t get the information for approximately 24 hours which limits our response. In addition, if you phone us directly, I am certain we can acquire more information, which would enable us to actually respond to your concerns. Obscure information about something that may or may not have occurred in a certain area which was described very generally sure makes it hard for us to do anything.

• Someone sent a

somewhat inappropriate text, however, got the wrong number. All was cleared up by the RCMP, however, our suggestion is make sure you know who you are texting.

• We had a call that there was concern an individual is buying a substantial amount of Google Play cards. This is always a concern being these are often used with fraudulent activity with the buyer being unaware they are being scammed. Our investigation is continuing and we thank the caller which surely prevented this victim from being further victimized.

• An intoxicated individual was reported to be causing problems, however, upon the arrival of the Police, it was determined this individual was gone and there was no further assistance required.

• We had an individual that was arrested and introduced to our Drug Recognition Expert. The accused was processed and brought to a medical facility to provide samples of their blood. The driver is suspended and we are awaiting the results of the blood tests before we lay charges. The vehicle was impounded which may make it more difficult for the accused to re-offend.

• It is unfortunate that often the one release condition most individuals have difficulty complying with is the one relating to their addiction. We don’t request this condition as a punishment, rather a deterrent with the hope if they do not utilize the alcohol or drugs they will not commit an offence if released.

• If you lend something to someone and then expect it back calling the Police might not always be the best option. That said if it is a

• We had one collision reported and unfortunately there will be one less deer next hunting season.

• Members issued approximately 15 warnings and 10 tickets over the past week.

It’s getting better, but it may not seem so

By Murray Mandryk Things are getting better, although it may be hard to convince people that this is the case.

After all, there are legitimate reasons of late to think that the impact of this COVID-19 pandemic is making things much worse.

The past week or so seemed a pretty gruesome on all fronts … other than the reality that our COVID-19 cases are actually steadily decreasing.

I t started with news from Premier Scott Moe and Finance Minister Donna Harpauer that the 202021 Saskatchewan budget revenue shortfall might be anywhere between $1.3 billion and $3.3 billion. That would imply a record annual deficit for the province of Saskatchewan.

Good for Moe and Harpauer for at least making us aware of this reality a month after releasing only government spending estimates without any meaningful revenue projections.

As potentially bad as this news is, it’s always better to know about the worst case scenarios in advance.

Yes, it was a bit of a disservice for Moe and Harpauer to suggest this would be a “pandemic deficit” and that there was no major worries about it extending into future years.

Beyond the fact that no one can say for certain how long the economic effect will be, we already know that COVID-19 spending and this lost revenue will add to the costs of servicing the debt.

We also know that Saskatchewan public debt was creeping up towards $23 billion long before this massive revenue dip.

The next unfortunate bad news was the price of a barrel oil dipping into negative territory, meaning that oil companies would, at least in theory, pay you store their oil that day.

This is devastating news for the oil industry that will affect large areas of rural Saskatchewan. To be clear, oil is not valueless and it will rebound, likely when the Saudi Arabia and Russia stop playing games by overproducing to flood the market.

But its economic impact will hurt for some time to come.

And all of this happened at a time when the country had just witnessed its biggest mass murder in its history. This only added to the pallor.

In short, it’s getting hard to feel good right now, so maybe now is the time to remind ourselves that there are still a lot of things to feel good about.

The first good thing is that for the pat two weeks, the daily increase in new COVID-19 cases is in the low single digits. Recoveries are now outdistancing new cases.

As of the writing of this column, active COVID-19 cases have been reduce to 65 cases in this province with only four deaths.

That is magnificent news, news so good that the Premier has begun the process of an ever-so-slow re-opening of the economy.

It can and should be done with keeping the focus on-going social distancing measures that have stopped the spread and flattened the curve.

We can do both stop the spread and open business, although perhaps not to the satisfaction of everyone.

But one other thing that maybe people are not thinking too much about is how much this is bringing us together.

Sure, that’s not always been the case.

News of the oil price crash brought out a few self-righteous and comments from environmentalists. And some in the oil sector were clearly unappreciative of federal and provincial support for programs like the one to clean up abandoned wells that have long been the industry’s responsibility.

But while some have been reacting out of fear and anger, the vast majority of Saskatchewan people have reacted with generosity and kindness.

We have returned to our Saskatchewan values and traditions of looking out for our neighbours.

All this may has reminded us who we really are.

Not dark for very long With about seven minutes to go before an on-line meeting I was hosting was set to begin, the power suddenly went out.

I had my resources set out in front of me for easy reference, and I had just clicked on the link to prepare for others to log in when my screen went black and the lights went out. This meeting had already been postponed Shelley Luedtke from a prior date and now the lack of power was putting this one in jeopardy.

Just as I was trying to put another plan in place, the power returned. It had been only a few minutes but as I began to re-start everything, I was fully aware that others in the meeting were having to wait. It seemed as if every moment stretched out interminably and my impatience was telling.

A few years ago I had the opportunity to be part of an outreach event in a migrant work camp in Mexico. We arrived in the afternoon to interact with the children and adults and prepare for a movie that was to be shown that night. As the sun began to set we looked for a place to sit on the ground amongst the large number of people who had come out to see it. Before long I was struck by how dark it had become. There were no outdoor lights. No indoor lights. The projection of the movie against a big white screen provided the only illumination. There was no electricity in the camp. When the sun set, so did their only light.

I was shaken by the written account of a man who lived with his family in an overcrowded refugee camp for many years. He said the days were difficult, but the nights were terrifying. As darkness descended he could hear the screams of people who were the latest victims of violent crimes.

The darkness exposed their complete vulnerability while providing a protective cover to those who perpetrated heinous acts.

Things I have to worry about in the dark are

vastly different from the concerns of many, many others. To have an outage you first have to have power. To worry about a fridge full of food spoiling, you first have to have that fridge full of food.

To worry about what might happen to our electronics and appliances we first have to own electronics and appliances.

We have all experienced any number of power outages--some more notable than others perhaps because of their duration or events it might have interrupted. But whether it has been in a city, town, campus, campground or at work, I am fortunate to be able to say I never felt unsafe or unprotected in any of those situations. Inconvenienced, perhaps. Annoyed? Admittedly, far too often. But never did I feel my life or safety were at risk simply because I found myself in the dark.

Each and every time the power was restored I happily and easily slid back into the routine of the day. Too easily; with little thought for those who had worked at its restoration. Without regard for those who can’t wait in anticipation for power to be restored because they have no access to it in the first place.

There are times when events will take place putting us in a position to reevaluate or reorder our priorities. We are forced to take stock of what is important--or perhaps it would be better to say we are given an opportunity to determine what truly matters. But being unable to change the situation, we can often work to better manage our response to it. Though it might be very difficult to go through at the time, some amazing things can come out of the challenge. Appreciation. Perspective. Awareness. Gratitude. But we might have to adjust our way of looking to be able to see it.

Maybe it can start with recognizing that loss of power, or anything else we might have to do without, is not about what is lost in the short term but rather that it is there at all. Think of what our response could be if we remembered that what is considered essential for us, is a luxury beyond anything others could begin to imagine.

That’s my outlook.

Carlyle RCMP honour one of their own Kelly Johnson The Observer Members of the Carlyle RCMP and Traffic Services held a memorial on April 24 for Constable Heidi Stevenson who lost her life in the tragedy that took place in Nova Scotia.

Members gathered with civilians at the Detachment for a moment of silence and a ceremonial procession of service vehicles to salute Constable Stevenson. Officers drove through the community of Carlyle to display their grief for the veteran of 23 years with the force and mother of two.

Twenty-one others were also killed and others injured, including another member of the RCMP.

The Alida community was saddened to hear of the sudden death of Edgar Bendtsen on Apr. 25 at the age of 73 years. He was the son of the late Einar and Susie Bendtsen of Alida. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Shirley, sons Todd (Laurie Ann), Lloyd (Tara) and Steven (Lesa) and eight grandchildren, as well as numerious extended family. Our sincere sympathy and condolences are extended to all family members at this time. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.

As I sit here this Monday morning I realize that there is only four days left in April and a the new month of May will be here. Hubby was finally able to find a field that was dry enough so he could go play in the dirt. Also saw a couple of other farmers out in their fields going around and around – yup before we know it they will be busy seeding. Gee sure do hope we will get some rain soon – it is so dry out there. The fire truck has received numerous calls to come put out a grass fire that got away. So folks if you must – please take precaution and be careful while doing some burning – better yet don’t do it until we get some rain. If there’s a fire ban – please respect it and don’t burn.

Once again it’s very quiet around, everyone still being cautious and keeping mostly to themselves and their property, only going out to pick up their mail or some groceries, just the essentials really.

By the news reports they are beginning to open up the economy slowly – so hey folks it’s sounding and looking good – but let’s not rush it – it’s sooner to be safe than sorry and gosh forbid if we should have another outbreak. In the meantime folks let’s remember – to Keep Physical Distancing – Stay Healthy – Be Safe and Take Care, we WILL get through this together.

Moose Mountain Lodge residents enjoy soloist

By Kelly Johnson The Observer On Saturday, April 25 the residents at Moose Mountain Lodge in Carlyle were entertained by singer Maddison Townsend of Alida.

Townsend was set up outside the Lodge and residents were able

to view her through the window.

For 30 minutes, Townsend took to the microphone, singing five songs for the residents and staff to enjoy. The performance was also streamed live on Facebook.

Dawn Britt, one of

the activity workers at the Lodge and happens to be Townsend’s coach, organized the event.

Townsend has been singing since a very young age and placed first in several categories at the Carnduff Musical Festival held at Oxbow in February 2020.

TRACTOR & MOWER OPERATOR – R.M. of Wawken No. 93 The R.M. of Wawken No. 93 is seeking to fill the position of Tractor & Mower Operator. This is a full-time, seasonal position, with an approximate start date of June 01st, 2020.

The R.M. is currently operating a JD 6155M tractor with frontend loader and pulling a Schulte 1510 Flex Arm and 15’ XH 1500 rotary cutter.

In addition to mowing duties, the position will also include general maintenance responsibilities, such as machine and shop maintenance, road sign installations, and other such duties as determined

by Council.

Applicants must submit a current resume detailing experience, past equipment operated, training/ courses taken, expected wage, and references. We are all well, and one or two of us have been able to go for short walks. (Lockdown is to prevent the bad stuff coming in.) Ralph Mills celebrated his 96th birthday, without a party. We tried bean bag toss: and Charlotte and Doris brought the movie and exercises.

Melissa Thiessen and her children came to the courtyard blowing colored soap bubbles for us to admire. Ted’s friends, (who gave us the outdoor concert last summer) sent him a video of a fiddle camp they attended at Barrows, MB. The guest conductor spend two winters in Northern Manitoba, teaching fiddle to the native youth.

I grew up with Ham Radio in the living room. My father and uncle built their first receivers. They used headphones to make them.

When you could send and receive Morse Code, 10 words a minute, like the C.P.R. telegraphers, you could apply for a license for $10.00, to operate a station in your home, (VE5KJ). He soon logged all States, and many countries in code. He infected my hushand, who had more trouble with the Morse Code as he lacked a musical ear. It was our second Christmas before we could talk to my parents, 100 miles away on radiophone, and

began a daily schedule, which lasted four years.

They received news of grandchildren by radio, I still listen.

Radio was a blessing to my mother-inlaw who was bedridden at home with a broken hip and arthritis. She had her daily hour with the Soaps, Ma Perkins, One Man’s Family, etc., Where each 15 minutes had a weekly social problem of the day to solve. Children did their chores early so they could hear the adventures of their cowboy heroes. Evenings brought Jack Benny and Saturday the Metropolitan Opera and Hockey Night in Canada. Radio united Canada in World War II. It continues to unite us.

The community was saddened to hear of the passing of John Yeo. He passed away at the Regina General Hospital on Apr. 19 at the age of 70 years. John was a resident of Wawota for many years also lived in Moosomin and Whitewood. He is remembered by his partner, Gloria Doroshenko of Whitewood,His sister and brother-in-law, Marguerite and Dan Van Dresar and their family and many friends.

Happy birthday to Keith Olson who celebrated his 80th birthday on Apr. 25. Joyce Ioleen Farrow 1932 - 2020 Our hearts are broken as the angels rejoice.

We, the family of Joyce Farrow are saddened and heartbroken to announce, in her 88th year, her peaceful passing on Friday, April 24, 2020.

Joyce was predeceased by the love of her life and soulmate, Harry R. Farrow (July 22, 2018); parents: Albert C. Trapp (April 9, 1974) and Margaret M. Trapp (August 27, 1997); sister-in-law Verna Trapp (February 23, 2020).

Joyce will be forever loved, and memories will be cherished by her son Brian (Vicki); daughter Brenda (Steve); four grandsons, Jonathan (Jill), Michael (Janine), Curtis (Krisitin), and Chris (Danielle); great grandchildren, Torin and Taylin, baby Clemmensen coming soon, Sarah, Adam and Lane. Joyce is also survived by her brother Ken and his children Greg (Kyla), Jeff (Sheila) and their children.

We are forever thankful to the Management and Staff at Fillmore Health Centre who provided so much love and care for both Mom and Dad. They have not only been primary caregivers but family members to us all.

A celebration of Mom’s life will be held when it is safe to bring friends and family together in her honour.

Churches reach out using social media

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Due to the Covid19 pandemic, churches are dealing with the order to be closed to in-church services by going to social media to get the word out to their followers. (The Observer was able to contact a few of them and report on how they are dealing with the pandemic.)

Moore of the Anglican Church local diocese of Manor and Cannington is broadcasting online, her sermon is available to anyone wishing to view. Moore’s concerns are people being able to reach out to family and loved ones and says, she is, “anxiously awaiting the time to get going with services at Cannington.”

Redstone at OneChurch. ca of Carlyle is not new to the online approach to reaching his followers, having been set up virtually to deliver services for some time, getting as many as 250 people tuning in weekly for Sunday services and also doing video chats on Wednesday. He is well prepared for the situation as the church has been live-streaming for awhile and we are set up for this.

Carlyle’s United Church Minister Mathias Ross is doing online services via Zoom. Followers can contact the church for the ID as well as contact the church by phone or participate in the virtual services viewing on their smart phone, computer or other device.

Reverend Ross encourages anyone to share stories related to the pandemic, on topics that will inspire one another and also he asks people to keep in touch with one another.

The Free Methodist Church in Wawota is also taking steps to keep people connected. Pastor Beverly Kay is sending out daily emails to

Reverend Matthew Redstone has the necessary wiring to keep connected to the congregation at OneChurch.ca. the church family consisting of words of encouragement including a prayer focus, a daily scripture verse and also a prayer song if it suits the focus of the day.

Pastor Dave Meisner of the Full Gospel Church in Carlyle has his followers connected online and is using Facebook Live to interact

with each other. Pastor Meisner has got close to one thousand views on one occasion and an average weekly viewing of 500 on Zoom for prayer meetings. He is also putting a monthly service on USB stick that is sent to the Moose Mountain Lodge for viewing.

Pastor Meisner offers, “If there is an area that

the church could help with, please contact us, (Pastor Meisner would like to fill in any gaps.”

The main message being sent by the churches is to stay connected and that there is someone ready to talk to anyone that wants to call in. They would be happy to reach out to anyone, at anytime.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • It has been a challenging week for the RCMP and for Canada with the tragedy that occurred in Nova Scotia. We are a big country, however, we are so interconnected. As it relates to our Detachment we have a Member in Carlyle who is from that area of Nova Scotia, we have a Member in Carlyle that previously served in this area of Nova Scotia, we have a Member that previously served in Carlyle that is now stationed in the area and several Members have Troop Mates in Nova Scotia. In addition Heidi Stevenson has three Troop Mates that still serve in Saskatchewan and I know each of them personally. I was not planning on writing anything about this tragedy until I received a call from a representative of our local Legion requesting permission to lay a wreath on behalf of the Legion at our flagpole. This wreath has since been joined by flowers. The Southern Plains Co-op wished to bring our Detachment a food donation to show their support. They graciously agreed to make a donation in memory of our fallen colleague to our local food bank.

We are very touched and we appreciate the support and concern shown by the communities we serve. I can only say to those showing their support for our loss, thank you, thank you very much. Your sentiments mean more than I can describe.

• We understand you may be frustrated and annoyed if someone makes you disconnect your electronic gaming system, however, this frustration does not justify calling 911. In addition, if you need to talk to the RCMP, please don’t call 911. Call 4536707 or 310-RCMP. • We had a multiple hit alarm, however, it was false. An occupant was having extreme challenges in dealing with the alarm which is understandable if one has ever heard the noise

that can be caused by an alarm.

• We continue to monitor more and more people who are on release conditions. This includes people who are awaiting to be dealt with in court, those that have been dealt with and part of their sentence is to comply with conditions and in some cases individuals that are on parole.

• We received a call about a dog in a slough that might not survive.

Fortunately an individual retrieved it before the arrival of the Police.

I am certain a nice warm shower or bath was warranted after this challenging task was completed.

• Do you know what your licence plate number is? You should. In the past we have had people discover someone has stolen their licence plate and replaced it with a stolen licence plate. This is only discovered when the driver gets pulled over. Recently we had a report of a licence plate being stolen and we have now entered that information on to our national database.

• A social media battle ended up involving the Police. As we have often suggested, block people or ignore them.

• If you are calling Crime Stoppers please remember we don’t get the information for approximately 24 hours which limits our response. In addition, if you phone us directly, I am certain we can acquire more information, which would enable us to actually respond to your concerns. Obscure information about something that may or may not have occurred in a certain area which was described very generally sure makes it hard for us to do anything.

• Someone sent a

somewhat inappropriate text, however, got the wrong number. All was cleared up by the RCMP, however, our suggestion is make sure you know who you are texting.

• We had a call that there was concern an individual is buying a substantial amount of Google Play cards. This is always a concern being these are often used with fraudulent activity with the buyer being unaware they are being scammed. Our investigation is continuing and we thank the caller which surely prevented this victim from being further victimized.

• An intoxicated individual was reported to be causing problems, however, upon the arrival of the Police, it was determined this individual was gone and there was no further assistance required.

• We had an individual that was arrested and introduced to our Drug Recognition Expert. The accused was processed and brought to a medical facility to provide samples of their blood. The driver is suspended and we are awaiting the results of the blood tests before we lay charges. The vehicle was impounded which may make it more difficult for the accused to re-offend.

• It is unfortunate that often the one release condition most individuals have difficulty complying with is the one relating to their addiction. We don’t request this condition as a punishment, rather a deterrent with the hope if they do not utilize the alcohol or drugs they will not commit an offence if released.

• If you lend something to someone and then expect it back calling the Police might not always be the best option. That said if it is a

• We had one collision reported and unfortunately there will be one less deer next hunting season.

• Members issued approximately 15 warnings and 10 tickets over the past week.

It’s getting better, but it may not seem so

By Murray Mandryk Things are getting better, although it may be hard to convince people that this is the case.

After all, there are legitimate reasons of late to think that the impact of this COVID-19 pandemic is making things much worse.

The past week or so seemed a pretty gruesome on all fronts … other than the reality that our COVID-19 cases are actually steadily decreasing.

I t started with news from Premier Scott Moe and Finance Minister Donna Harpauer that the 202021 Saskatchewan budget revenue shortfall might be anywhere between $1.3 billion and $3.3 billion. That would imply a record annual deficit for the province of Saskatchewan.

Good for Moe and Harpauer for at least making us aware of this reality a month after releasing only government spending estimates without any meaningful revenue projections.

As potentially bad as this news is, it’s always better to know about the worst case scenarios in advance.

Yes, it was a bit of a disservice for Moe and Harpauer to suggest this would be a “pandemic deficit” and that there was no major worries about it extending into future years.

Beyond the fact that no one can say for certain how long the economic effect will be, we already know that COVID-19 spending and this lost revenue will add to the costs of servicing the debt.

We also know that Saskatchewan public debt was creeping up towards $23 billion long before this massive revenue dip.

The next unfortunate bad news was the price of a barrel oil dipping into negative territory, meaning that oil companies would, at least in theory, pay you store their oil that day.

This is devastating news for the oil industry that will affect large areas of rural Saskatchewan. To be clear, oil is not valueless and it will rebound, likely when the Saudi Arabia and Russia stop playing games by overproducing to flood the market.

But its economic impact will hurt for some time to come.

And all of this happened at a time when the country had just witnessed its biggest mass murder in its history. This only added to the pallor.

In short, it’s getting hard to feel good right now, so maybe now is the time to remind ourselves that there are still a lot of things to feel good about.

The first good thing is that for the pat two weeks, the daily increase in new COVID-19 cases is in the low single digits. Recoveries are now outdistancing new cases.

As of the writing of this column, active COVID-19 cases have been reduce to 65 cases in this province with only four deaths.

That is magnificent news, news so good that the Premier has begun the process of an ever-so-slow re-opening of the economy.

It can and should be done with keeping the focus on-going social distancing measures that have stopped the spread and flattened the curve.

We can do both stop the spread and open business, although perhaps not to the satisfaction of everyone.

But one other thing that maybe people are not thinking too much about is how much this is bringing us together.

Sure, that’s not always been the case.

News of the oil price crash brought out a few self-righteous and comments from environmentalists. And some in the oil sector were clearly unappreciative of federal and provincial support for programs like the one to clean up abandoned wells that have long been the industry’s responsibility.

But while some have been reacting out of fear and anger, the vast majority of Saskatchewan people have reacted with generosity and kindness.

We have returned to our Saskatchewan values and traditions of looking out for our neighbours.

All this may has reminded us who we really are.

Not dark for very long With about seven minutes to go before an on-line meeting I was hosting was set to begin, the power suddenly went out.

I had my resources set out in front of me for easy reference, and I had just clicked on the link to prepare for others to log in when my screen went black and the lights went out. This meeting had already been postponed Shelley Luedtke from a prior date and now the lack of power was putting this one in jeopardy.

Just as I was trying to put another plan in place, the power returned. It had been only a few minutes but as I began to re-start everything, I was fully aware that others in the meeting were having to wait. It seemed as if every moment stretched out interminably and my impatience was telling.

A few years ago I had the opportunity to be part of an outreach event in a migrant work camp in Mexico. We arrived in the afternoon to interact with the children and adults and prepare for a movie that was to be shown that night. As the sun began to set we looked for a place to sit on the ground amongst the large number of people who had come out to see it. Before long I was struck by how dark it had become. There were no outdoor lights. No indoor lights. The projection of the movie against a big white screen provided the only illumination. There was no electricity in the camp. When the sun set, so did their only light.

I was shaken by the written account of a man who lived with his family in an overcrowded refugee camp for many years. He said the days were difficult, but the nights were terrifying. As darkness descended he could hear the screams of people who were the latest victims of violent crimes.

The darkness exposed their complete vulnerability while providing a protective cover to those who perpetrated heinous acts.

Things I have to worry about in the dark are

vastly different from the concerns of many, many others. To have an outage you first have to have power. To worry about a fridge full of food spoiling, you first have to have that fridge full of food.

To worry about what might happen to our electronics and appliances we first have to own electronics and appliances.

We have all experienced any number of power outages--some more notable than others perhaps because of their duration or events it might have interrupted. But whether it has been in a city, town, campus, campground or at work, I am fortunate to be able to say I never felt unsafe or unprotected in any of those situations. Inconvenienced, perhaps. Annoyed? Admittedly, far too often. But never did I feel my life or safety were at risk simply because I found myself in the dark.

Each and every time the power was restored I happily and easily slid back into the routine of the day. Too easily; with little thought for those who had worked at its restoration. Without regard for those who can’t wait in anticipation for power to be restored because they have no access to it in the first place.

There are times when events will take place putting us in a position to reevaluate or reorder our priorities. We are forced to take stock of what is important--or perhaps it would be better to say we are given an opportunity to determine what truly matters. But being unable to change the situation, we can often work to better manage our response to it. Though it might be very difficult to go through at the time, some amazing things can come out of the challenge. Appreciation. Perspective. Awareness. Gratitude. But we might have to adjust our way of looking to be able to see it.

Maybe it can start with recognizing that loss of power, or anything else we might have to do without, is not about what is lost in the short term but rather that it is there at all. Think of what our response could be if we remembered that what is considered essential for us, is a luxury beyond anything others could begin to imagine.

That’s my outlook.

Carlyle RCMP honour one of their own Kelly Johnson The Observer Members of the Carlyle RCMP and Traffic Services held a memorial on April 24 for Constable Heidi Stevenson who lost her life in the tragedy that took place in Nova Scotia.

Members gathered with civilians at the Detachment for a moment of silence and a ceremonial procession of service vehicles to salute Constable Stevenson. Officers drove through the community of Carlyle to display their grief for the veteran of 23 years with the force and mother of two.

Twenty-one others were also killed and others injured, including another member of the RCMP.

The Alida community was saddened to hear of the sudden death of Edgar Bendtsen on Apr. 25 at the age of 73 years. He was the son of the late Einar and Susie Bendtsen of Alida. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Shirley, sons Todd (Laurie Ann), Lloyd (Tara) and Steven (Lesa) and eight grandchildren, as well as numerious extended family. Our sincere sympathy and condolences are extended to all family members at this time. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.

As I sit here this Monday morning I realize that there is only four days left in April and a the new month of May will be here. Hubby was finally able to find a field that was dry enough so he could go play in the dirt. Also saw a couple of other farmers out in their fields going around and around – yup before we know it they will be busy seeding. Gee sure do hope we will get some rain soon – it is so dry out there. The fire truck has received numerous calls to come put out a grass fire that got away. So folks if you must – please take precaution and be careful while doing some burning – better yet don’t do it until we get some rain. If there’s a fire ban – please respect it and don’t burn.

Once again it’s very quiet around, everyone still being cautious and keeping mostly to themselves and their property, only going out to pick up their mail or some groceries, just the essentials really.

By the news reports they are beginning to open up the economy slowly – so hey folks it’s sounding and looking good – but let’s not rush it – it’s sooner to be safe than sorry and gosh forbid if we should have another outbreak. In the meantime folks let’s remember – to Keep Physical Distancing – Stay Healthy – Be Safe and Take Care, we WILL get through this together.

Moose Mountain Lodge residents enjoy soloist

By Kelly Johnson The Observer On Saturday, April 25 the residents at Moose Mountain Lodge in Carlyle were entertained by singer Maddison Townsend of Alida.

Townsend was set up outside the Lodge and residents were able

to view her through the window.

For 30 minutes, Townsend took to the microphone, singing five songs for the residents and staff to enjoy. The performance was also streamed live on Facebook.

Dawn Britt, one of

the activity workers at the Lodge and happens to be Townsend’s coach, organized the event.

Townsend has been singing since a very young age and placed first in several categories at the Carnduff Musical Festival held at Oxbow in February 2020.

TRACTOR & MOWER OPERATOR – R.M. of Wawken No. 93 The R.M. of Wawken No. 93 is seeking to fill the position of Tractor & Mower Operator. This is a full-time, seasonal position, with an approximate start date of June 01st, 2020.

The R.M. is currently operating a JD 6155M tractor with frontend loader and pulling a Schulte 1510 Flex Arm and 15’ XH 1500 rotary cutter.

In addition to mowing duties, the position will also include general maintenance responsibilities, such as machine and shop maintenance, road sign installations, and other such duties as determined

by Council.

We are all well, and one or two of us have been able to go for short walks. (Lockdown is to prevent the bad stuff coming in.) Ralph Mills celebrated his 96th birthday, without a party. We tried bean bag toss: and Charlotte and Doris brought the movie and exercises.

Melissa Thiessen and her children came to the courtyard blowing colored soap bubbles for us to admire. Ted’s friends, (who gave us the outdoor concert last summer) sent him a video of a fiddle camp they attended at Barrows, MB. The guest conductor spend two winters in Northern Manitoba, teaching fiddle to the native youth.

I grew up with Ham Radio in the living room. My father and uncle built their first receivers. They used headphones to make them.

When you could send and receive Morse Code, 10 words a minute, like the C.P.R. telegraphers, you could apply for a license for $10.00, to operate a station in your home, (VE5KJ). He soon logged all States, and many countries in code. He infected my hushand, who had more trouble with the Morse Code as he lacked a musical ear. It was our second Christmas before we could talk to my parents, 100 miles away on radiophone, and

began a daily schedule, which lasted four years.

They received news of grandchildren by radio, I still listen.

Radio was a blessing to my mother-inlaw who was bedridden at home with a broken hip and arthritis. She had her daily hour with the Soaps, Ma Perkins, One Man’s Family, etc., Where each 15 minutes had a weekly social problem of the day to solve. Children did their chores early so they could hear the adventures of their cowboy heroes. Evenings brought Jack Benny and Saturday the Metropolitan Opera and Hockey Night in Canada. Radio united Canada in World War II. It continues to unite us.

The community was saddened to hear of the passing of John Yeo. He passed away at the Regina General Hospital on Apr. 19 at the age of 70 years. John was a resident of Wawota for many years also lived in Moosomin and Whitewood. He is remembered by his partner, Gloria Doroshenko of Whitewood,His sister and brother-in-law, Marguerite and Dan Van Dresar and their family and many friends.

Happy birthday to Keith Olson who celebrated his 80th birthday on Apr. 25. Joyce Ioleen Farrow 1932 - 2020 Our hearts are broken as the angels rejoice.

We, the family of Joyce Farrow are saddened and heartbroken to announce, in her 88th year, her peaceful passing on Friday, April 24, 2020.

Joyce was predeceased by the love of her life and soulmate, Harry R. Farrow (July 22, 2018); parents: Albert C. Trapp (April 9, 1974) and Margaret M. Trapp (August 27, 1997); sister-in-law Verna Trapp (February 23, 2020).

Joyce will be forever loved, and memories will be cherished by her son Brian (Vicki); daughter Brenda (Steve); four grandsons, Jonathan (Jill), Michael (Janine), Curtis (Krisitin), and Chris (Danielle); great grandchildren, Torin and Taylin, baby Clemmensen coming soon, Sarah, Adam and Lane. Joyce is also survived by her brother Ken and his children Greg (Kyla), Jeff (Sheila) and their children.

We are forever thankful to the Management and Staff at Fillmore Health Centre who provided so much love and care for both Mom and Dad. They have not only been primary caregivers but family members to us all.

A celebration of Mom’s life will be held when it is safe to bring friends and family together in her honour.

Churches reach out using social media

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Due to the Covid19 pandemic, churches are dealing with the order to be closed to in-church services by going to social media to get the word out to their followers. (The Observer was able to contact a few of them and report on how they are dealing with the pandemic.)

Moore of the Anglican Church local diocese of Manor and Cannington is broadcasting online, her sermon is available to anyone wishing to view. Moore’s concerns are people being able to reach out to family and loved ones and says, she is, “anxiously awaiting the time to get going with services at Cannington.”

Redstone at OneChurch. ca of Carlyle is not new to the online approach to reaching his followers, having been set up virtually to deliver services for some time, getting as many as 250 people tuning in weekly for Sunday services and also doing video chats on Wednesday. He is well prepared for the situation as the church has been live-streaming for awhile and we are set up for this.

Carlyle’s United Church Minister Mathias Ross is doing online services via Zoom. Followers can contact the church for the ID as well as contact the church by phone or participate in the virtual services viewing on their smart phone, computer or other device.

Reverend Ross encourages anyone to share stories related to the pandemic, on topics that will inspire one another and also he asks people to keep in touch with one another.

The Free Methodist Church in Wawota is also taking steps to keep people connected. Pastor Beverly Kay is sending out daily emails to
