Local golf courses teeing up

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Golf courses in Saskatchewan have been given the go ahead by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) to open on May 15 with certain restrictions in place.

Most notable is there will be no “walk-ons”, all golfers will have to book a tee time and pay in advance. Players will be asked to follow strict adherence to physical distancing when arriving and at all times during course play.

COVID-19 signs will be put up at each course to make sure all players are aware of the conditions set out by the SHA. Practice greens and driving ranges will be allowed and again, golfers must be in full compliance of the physical distancing guidelines. Some courses may not have their practice range or putting green open due to their course’s situation and inability to provide for physical distancing guidelines.

There will be 12-minute intervals between tee times, which has been revised from 20 minutes in the initial restrictions.

A maximum of four golfers per group is allowed and groups finishing a hole should allow the group ahead to finish teeing off before approaching the next tee off box. Only one golfer will be permitted to a power cart unless the golfers reside in the same household. Courses may require each golfer to provide their name and phone number prior to tee off.

This is a safety precaution so if there was a COVID-19 outbreak, the course personnel would be able to identify where and how it was spread.

Golfers will want to make sure that they have a means to clean their golf balls as there will be no ball washers, as well as no rakes in sand traps and no oncourse washrooms.

The washroom facilities at clubhouses will be open and only one person at a time will be allowed entry to the facility.

Flags will remain in at all times and cups will be elevated or engineered in such a way that a golfer can retrieve the ball without having to reach into the cup and/or touching it or the flagstick.

Golfers will want to check with their local pro shop for any other rules or restrictions that will be in place to ensure that the course they are playing can maintain the integrity of the SHA guidelines or the jurisdiction that

the course is situated in.

Remember that these guidelines are provincially mandated, golfers going out of province should make sure they have a clear understanding of the guidelines for other jurisdictions before departing.

The expected rise in calls for mental health support is not there, just yet

By Ana Bykhovskaia abykhovskaia@estevanmercury.ca Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic was getting closer to Canada and then paralyzed most of the country with quarantine, the concerns about the public’s mental wellbeing have been growing.

The Mercury reached out to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Weyburn branch, covering the southeast corner of the province, to see how the situation has been so far in the area.

Tasha Collins, the program director for the CMHA Weyburn branch, said that even though they’ve been closed to the public they are still available for some services and supports. However, she noted that what they’ve been witnessing is not what they were predicting at the beginning of the quarantine.

“At this time, we have not received an influx of calls for support despite having the wellness support response line available at extended hours. We are expecting to have increased needs for support as we move forward, and this goes on,” said Collins.

Although the number of calls didn’t go up too much, the reason for many calls was different from before.

“Many of the calls we are receiving have to do in some way with the pandemic. Whether it is about government benefits including GST, CERB, etc., looking into what services and who is available to offer, or just wanting to talk about what they are ex-

periencing at this time,” said Collins.

In mid-April, CMHA started talking about a potential echo pandemic of mental illness and mental health issues as a result of COVID-19. In their statement, they call for immediate action to get ready to handle the possible aftereffects of the current pandemic.

“To avoid a potential echo pandemic of mental illness and mental health issues as a result of COVID-19, the …CMHA calls for immediate investment in the scale-up of cost-effective, evidence-based community mental health programs and supports that can take the pressure off acute-care services across Canada,” says the statement.

“The hard truth is that our mental health system in Canada already lacked the capacity to meet demand before this pandemic began. We must act now to ensure we are prepared for a surge in mental health problems as a result of COVID-19,” said Margaret Eaton, CMHA’s national CEO. CMHA recommended that Canada significantly increase “mental health-promotion programs and supports for those experiencing new pandemic-related stress and anxiety and to stave off new demands on the system coming from the increases in depression, psychological distress, substance use, PTSD and domestic violence that almost always accompany large-scale disasters.”

The Games were originally scheduled to be held from July 26-Aug. 1 in Lloydminster.

“Try not to ignore or suppress anxious thoughts… Self-care is critically important… Seek information from reliable news sources only…Take recommended precautions as outlined by Health Canada… Try to stay connected to friends, family and other supports,” outlines the CMHA National office. If people are feeling significant distress, they are encouraged to reach out for formal mental health supports from a health care professional or a local CMHA. The Weyburn branch is available to whoever may need supports or services, and they encourage anyone who may be struggling with their mental health or just in need of a conversation to contact them. The services currently available through CMHA Weyburn branch are: • A new CMHA wellness support response line for the southeast corner is available during extended hours from 1-8 p.m., Monday through Friday at 306-861-4951. (Note: This is a wellness support line, not a crisis line).

• Phone and email support and resources for the community and participants, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (306-842-7959) or over email (tashac@cmhask.com).

• They are also providing lunches for CMHA Weyburn participants (including from other communities in the southeast) in need, following precautions.

• They are calling all current participants weekly to check-in, have a conversation and offer support if needed.

• They also came up with a few other local initiatives such as borrowing movies and supporting community-led initiatives.

COVID-19 contradictions an inevitability

By Murray Mandryk The novel coronavirus is under control and the curve is being flattened … except where it isn’t.

And the plan to re-open Saskatchewan is proceeding in a sensible, methodical way . . . except where that’s not happening.

If COVID-19 developments of the past week have sounded like an incomprehensible riddle, it’s likely because it’s been just that.

Really, there’s only one or two things predicted that have actually come to fruition: As our politicians suggested would happen, there have been setbacks. And as one would think would happen in a crisis of unprecedented nature and proportion, some mistakes were inevitable.

So let’s look at what’s happened in the past week ... and maybe what’s worked and what hasn’t.

Yes, Premier Scott Moe and doctors with Ministry of Health and the Saskatchewan Health Authority are right that the virus is mostly under control. We have had 487 cases as of the writing of this column, but only 171 are considered active. In what government classifies as southern and central rural Saskatchewan, there are zero active cases and less than 20 cases in the two major cities.

The problem is the “north” (specifically, an outbreak in the Lloydminster hospital) and the “far north” (specifically, La Loche 500 kilometres north of Saskatoon) that now account for 37 and 114, respectively, of those 171 active cases right now.

The La Loche situation is exceptional, in that it was brought into the community by returning oilsands workers from Alberta’s Kearl Lake and spread like wildfire through the impoverish community with a severe housing shortage where people live in close quarters.

While government officials were quick to point out this is an isolated outbreak, they were equally quick to point out such outbreaks brought in from the outside could happen in most any community (as was the case in in Lloydminster) and we need to be vigilant as a result.

The government said it was doing its part by excluding Lloydminster and the north from last week’s first phase of the Re-Open, Saskatchewan Plan.

It wasn’t exactly consistent with the overall message that now is a good time to start the provincewide re-opening process. But, as early suggested, virtually nothing in the situation we are now in lends itself to consistency.

So the Saskatchewan Party government forged ahead with the re-opening of dental, optometric and chiropractic services last week, notwithstanding the obvious difficulty of providing such procedures while keeping a safe social distance.

This was accompanied by allowing golfing, fishing and camping that can be more easily achieve social distancing. Again, some would argue that this is a misplacement of priorities. But maybe it’s a reflection of how tough it is to provide consistent policy, leaving plenty of opportunities for the secondguessers to complain how we are either proceeding too fast or too slow.

The only solution is to try and fix such problems as they arise, which seems to be what the SHA did last week when it unveiled its schedule to return to other medical procedures.

That begins on May 19 with procedures ranging from cataracts to hysterectomies to cochlear and thoracic procedures to MRIs, CTs, X-rays and ultrasounds, to breast biopsies to orthotics and prosthetics to chronic disease support to baby and prenatal care to home care and public health nursing, immunizations, public heath inspections, dialysis and mental health and addiction services including small group therapy.

Why some of these procedures didn’t happen earlier has a lot to do with could realistic be done and maybe what government and health experts got right and wrong.

There have been mistakes and there have been the need to make exceptions.

But what this whole COVID-19 crisis has really shown us we all need to adapt, to be patient to simply figure things out as we go.

Being led by the nose One of the many things I look forward to this time of year is the smell of freshly mown grass. It may not be one of the more pleasing aromas on the spectrum for some, but because of its association with other activities, I really like it.

For me, the smell of freshcut grass is backyard bliss. Kids splashing in a paddling pool or running through a sprinkler. BarShelley Luedtke becues. A lawn chair, diet Coke and a good book. I look forward to weekends when you can count on lawns getting mowed in my neighborhood.

There’s another aroma so prevalent right now it’s hard to escape. Nor should we want to since it is potentially lifesaving. Hand sanitizer. Something so precious it’s hard to acquire. But with each pump (and as grateful as I am to have access to it) the aroma takes me back to a time when a surgery and subsequent infections kept my husband in the hospital for a few weeks, resulting in us using hand sanitizer multiple times throughout the day. The aroma hits my nose and I am back standing right outside his hospital room, even though it was almost twelve years ago.

Our sense of smell can have a powerful effect on our mood, stress levels and even our productivity. Certain aromas affect brain activity or generate a physiological response. For instance, the smell of coffee can impact feelings of alertness, while some report that a scent like coconut reminds them of suntan lotions and consequently makes them feel more relaxed.

There’s another scent for me that denotes relaxation, contentment and peacefulness. It’s the fragrance of flowers. I love touring botanical gardens or arboretums and while they are spectacular to look at, I also love to just breathe in the fragrance. I take in the aroma, the quiet, and often the sound of water

as you walk past brooks or fountains that often play a role in the design. These garden walks most often happen while we’re on vacation so there’s a sense of unhurriedness that I embrace. It’s truly an example of what golfer Walter Hagen encouraged when he said, “You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry.

Don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.”

I don’t plant, weed or take care of any of the flowers in the garden or hanging baskets in my backyard.

That falls to my husband. It’s just not something I enjoy. But I can honestly say when I smell the blending of scents that comes with those flowers, I feel relaxed, carefree and very content. It’s all in the aroma.

The congregation I am part of built a new church several years ago. It’s been more than a decade since we moved in and in that time thousands of events have taken place; worship services, weddings, potlucks, classes, studies, funeral services, concerts, meetings and so much more, and yet when visitors come through the doors they often say “it still has that new church smell.” And they’re right. Although none of us can define it, the place has a scent that feels new. Fresh. There’s just something about the aroma.

Of course, the very things I can enjoy freely, aren’t experienced the same way by others. Those with allergies and sensitivities can become very ill by the fragrances, perfumes and scents all around us; and then there are those who have experienced the loss of smell. I’m not sure which might be worse: losing my sense of smell, or knowing that the aromas around me could make me sick. That’s how powerful the sense of smell is.

I have a shampoo that floats me right back to an ocean side resort, a body wash that takes me on a walk through the woods, and a candle that somehow makes it feel like Christmas Eve. We may not be able to travel right now but perhaps we can put our amazing senses to work and in doing so let our imagination take us to places we’ve already been. That’s my outlook.

GARDENING TIPS The top mulch varieties for your garden Gardeners use mulch to keep weeds away and to preserve moisture in the soil.

Though wood and bark mulch are the most popular, there are many other options available. Here are some types of mulch that are worth considering for your garden.

• Pine straw slowly acidifies soil, making it ideal for gardens with flowers that thrive in such conditions like hydrangeas, azaleas, rhododendrons and daffodils.

• Fallen leaves are a costfree and organic mulch option. It allows water to get

through, prevents weeds from pushing up and improves soil health by eventually turning into compost.

• Rock mulch is a more permanent option given that rocks don’t blow away or decompose. Rock mulch works well for low-maintenance gardens with mostly shrubs and trees.

• Cocoa mulch is the most eye-pleasing — and aromatic — option. Made of rich brown cocoa hulls, this type of mulch retains moisture well, repels garden pests and has a chocolatey smell. However, cocoa

mulch may not be the best option if you have pets: ingesting it makes dogs and cats sick.

• Wood and bark mulch is the most common type of mulch used for a reason. It’s inexpensive, it gives your garden a pleasing and natural look and it’s easy to lay down.

This is just a small selection of the types of mulch you can use in your garden. For instance, there’s also landscape fabric, mushroom compost, lava rock and seaweed. Simply choose the one that best suits your garden, budget and style.

HEALTH HUB 4 myths about PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder, better known as PTSD, is both well-known and poorly understood.

Here are four common myths about it that need to be debunked.

1. PTSD only affects soldiers. While it’s estimated that 10 to 20 per cent of North American veterans will experience PTSD, nearly anyone can develop the disorder. Abuse, assaults, natural disasters, accidents and surviving a critical illness can all trigger PTSD. Also, some people develop PTSD if a loved one goes through a traumatic event or dies suddenly.

2. Trauma means PTSD. Most people who encoun-

ter trauma don’t develop PTSD. In fact, they’re more likely to experience acute stress immediately following the event, which can manifest as insomnia, anxiety and other symptoms. By contrast, PTSD can develop a long time after the initial event, sometimes years after experiencing the trauma.

3. Weakness causes PTSD. PTSD isn’t a character flaw, nor is it caused by one. Like depression, it’s as much a biological condition as a mental one, and genetic predisposition to mental health issues is a known risk factor. And, just as weakness doesn’t cause PTSD, trying hard to feel better or

“powering through” won’t cure it. PTSD needs to be treated by a medical professional.

4. PTSD makes people violent. The myth that people with PTSD can lose track of reality and lash out violently is inaccurate and potentially harmful as it stigmatizes afflicted individuals as dangerous. In actuality, neither psychosis nor aggression are standard symptoms of PTSD and less than eight per cent of patients exhibit violent behaviour.

PTSD is a more common condition than many people think, and it can be treated effectively with a range of behavioural interventions and medications.

Hope all you Moms had an excellent Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10. As for myself, I received a couple of phone calls and a few texts, which are always great to receive. Also had a quick, short visit with granddaughter and her parents – they brought out a delicious angel food cake with strawberries – m-m-good (always tastes best when someone else makes it).

This year is not very pleasurable for any young person who is celebrating a birthday – they can’t have a party with their friends. So adult heads put on their thinking caps and try to figure something out to do. You’ve seen on the television of families putting together a parade usually led by a fire enieine, cars with lots of balloons etc. Well just such a parade materialized in Alida on Friday evening – the Alida fire engine led a number of vehicles, some decked out with balloons, and the smaller fire vehicle completed the parade. They circled the residence a couple of times with horns blowing, lights flashing and lots of birthday greetings being hollered from the vehicles as they passed the birthday girl. It was a great surprise and thoroughly appreciated. Early that afternoon I (grandma) had decided to gather up a few lawn ornaments, solar lights and such making them form a “picnic” group gathered on the front lawn to celebrate a birthday party with many balloons hung in the tree. The birthday girl stated that it was the best birthday ever and one that she’ll not forget. Much appreciation goes out to all who came and participated in the parade.

To everyone who may be celebrating a birthday or an anniversary during this time of Covid 19 – have a great day and remember you are in someone’s thoughts, if not there in person. Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary to you.

The farmers are now busy in the fields with spraying and seeding. Some fields are done while others are just being started. Hopefully we won’t receive any more rain or snow until the seeding is completed. What we received over the past weekend was enough to put a stop to everything for a couple of days. But boy oh boy the temperature surely was not very pleasant, especially the wind – it makes it darn cold outdoors. I was getting excited to gather some bedding plants and flowers, but not now with the cool temperatures hovering around (get tired of

lugging them in and out). Do believe the guys are going to head out in the field again today (Monday).

Maybe once we can enjoy seeing the pretty colored flowers in the yard one will feel so much happier and cheerful. Happy Spring everyone.

This past weekend we enjoyed the replays of the Canada Cup ’87 final hockey games where Canada defeated Russia in three very close games (two of which were in overtime). Also watched some curling replays, but must admit I am getting a little tired of viewing those games over and over again, usually the same teams. Oh well can’t be choosy – may as well get used to it as I have a feeling that is what we’ll be watching all summer long – reruns of one game or another (football and baseball are probably the next to be replayed). Oh joy!

Again it’s fairly quiet around, everyone still being cautious and keeping mostly to themselves and their property, only going out to pick up their mail or some groceries, just the essentials really. By the news reports they are beginning to open up the economy slowly – so hey folks it’s sounding and looking good – but let’s not rush it too soon – better to be safe than sorry and gosh forbid if we should have another

outbreak. In the meantime folks let’s remember – to Keep Physical Distancing – Stay Healthy – Be Safe and Take Care, we WILL get through this together.

Will take time to wish all the best to those who are confined to their residence, nursing homes, or hospital rooms, who can’t get out to see and enjoy the outside even just for a few moments. Hang on and we will beat this thing and things will improve, even if slowly. Just remember you are thought of often and are wished the best.

May Long-weekend coming up – Victoria Day on Monday, May 18 –do have a good weekend. Even if some restrictions have been lifted, please continue to be careful while out and about.

It is getting very difficult to gather news these days. I am doing the best I can. I understand with all of the restrictions there isn’t a lot of visiting and company. Let’s hope this will change soon, but only as soon as it is safe.

I had the pleasure of meeting Kayla Kopacz’s mother last week. She is Ruth Deersley and originally was from Manitoba and spent many years in Oxbow. She is spending some time with Kayla and Bailee and Joshua.

Congratulations to Ken Shayne who has retired as maintenance man at Deer View Lodge. He gave several years to this position and we wish him well in his retirement.

Nathan and Kristen Day and Kason have purchased the home of Ken and Gwen Robertson on Hill Ave. Ken and Gwen have moved to the Worley house (Donat Lamontagne) on Lonsdale. We wish them all comfort and happiness in their new homes.

The Annual Huntington Walk in Wawota was held on April 26.The McCaw girls, Joanne Corkish, Marion Husband and Barb Dennis are involved as a tribute to their mother Marj. There were six walkers and over $700.00 raised. Contributions are still being accepted. (I usually join this walk but for some reason presumed it would be cancelled so missed it. Wished I had checked).

Keith and I have 12 grandchildren and four of them have birthdays between May 7 and May 16.

Morgan Buhr (St. Albert) turned 15 on May 7, Kate and Sarah Heffernan (Regina) celebrated their 7th birthdays on May 13 and Emma Buhr will be 20 years old on May 16. We weren’t able to be together, nor did I make birthday cakes but send cards and a bit of money for them. Kate and Sarah are into scrunchies so made several of them in different colours. A few weeks back I made them face masks. (I think they think I need something to do).

Mel’s diner opens in Manor

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Mel’s Diner and C-store opened its doors on Monday, May 4. Located at 45 Main Street in Manor (in the same building as the Village office), the diner is operated by Mel and Lorna Hill of Carlyle and will have their sons, Brayden and Jamie working along side them in the family venture.

The Diner has been in the planning stages since November 2019 and was initially scheduled to open on April 6 of this year, but had to move opening day to May 4, due to COVID-19.

With customers unable to eat in because of the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s restrictions, the Hills made the decision to open for take-out food orders and convenience items.

The diner has a warm atmosphere and

inviting lighting. Lorna was the designer, picking the colours and fixtures with Mel doing the bulk of the renovations to get the premise ready to open.

Mel has enjoyed past experiences of working canteens for sports events, etc. and has done some catering. Working with the ups and downs of the economy in his previous jobs, he had a passion to operate a business, a cafe was the perfect choice, providing a lifestyle with regular hours and one where he could enjoy his customer’s company and serve

the public.

The plan is to be open Mondays to Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and be out the door by 5 pm.

Each day will have a feature breakfast as well as a lunch special. Also appearing on the menu as regular fare to compliment his daily lunch special will be soups, salads, burgers, subs, and sandwiches. There will be a dessert of the day to finish off your meal.

A special menu for kids under 8 will be available, so the whole family can eat when the cook at home has the night off.

Kenosee Lake businesses ponder upcoming tourist season

By Kelly Johnson The Observer With May having arrived, it is time to head out to the lake for some rest and relaxation and some peace and quiet, for now it is a “guessing game” as to what to expect for businesses in the Moose Mountain Provincial Park and the Village of Kenosee Lake.

Provincial campgrounds are not open until June

1 and golf courses will open on May 15, which will greatly affect the traffic coming into the very popular resort area as well as the neighbouring communities that rely on the tourist season to make businesses cost effective.

and what to expect in making plans to operate under the situation they find themselves in.

It is definitely an “open and see” juncture in relation to what to expect and adjustment to the circumstances that will be presented in the coming weeks.

Stu Balfour, who operates the Bar Bar in the Village of Kenosee, says, “We don’t know if we will be operating at 50% capacity, so until we find out, there is no way to plan yet”. The Bar Bar will be subject to the release of Phase 3 of the Provincial Government regulations pertaining to on-sale customers for food and beverage establishments.

The Kenosee Superslides is also in a quandary at this point waiting for the okay from the Saskatchewan Government on its next move.

Owner Jan Armstrong put it this way, “Until the provincial park opens, the slides will be closed.

Everything is up in the air, we are in a world of maybes”.

Most businesses are open, or plan to open, in some capacity. The Mini Mart has extended their hours to accommodate the tourist season and Allison’s Store is open and operating with regular hours and will have the ice cream stand open as well.

The Moosehead opened for Mother’s Day and will operate on a takeout only menu for now.

The Visitor Centre in Moose Mountain Provincial Park will likely have a lot of inquiries come June 1 when Provincial Park campgrounds open.

The Kenosee Inn has also been operating with a take out menu and the cabins are up and running, each having a separate outside

entrance. If traffic picks up, the hotel rooms will open as warranted.

Anyone planning to visit the Park can check the website for the busi-

ness that they require services from for hours of operation.

For now the Visitor Centre at the Chalet in the Park is closed, it will be opening on June 1.

The shadow of Covid 19’s biggest hit is when we realized that the Health Rule of “no more than 10 in a gathering.” Meal times are staggered, with only two or three at a table, and all activities in a group are cancelled. We are not to walk down the other hall, if more than 10 there, or visit in our rooms. “But my best friend lives in the

other hall! I can’t even go to put a note under her door!” The merciful staff tweaked a bit; so they can have one meal together. Those who are able, can go outside; but keep 6 feet away from anyone we meet. It has been too cold to visit in the courtyard. The only visitors have been Leora’s girls, talking to her through her window. My eye appointment next week, in Moosomin has been cancelled.

Good fortune, ‘toughness’ credited for hiker’s survival of bear attack

Grizzly stopped after biting into can of bear spray

By Mark Davis and CJ Baker Powell Tribune Staff Writers A Cody antler hunter who was severely mauled by a grizzly bear in Sunlight Basin on Friday apparently surprised the animal in its daybed. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department said this week that it was a quick encounter, which ended when the grizzly bit into a can of bear spray and left the area.

Spencer Smith, 41, suffered injuries in the attack, including severe bites to his head and neck. He walked 1.5 miles to get help afterwards, before being airlifted to a Billings hospital for treatment.

Smith had been hiking by himself “in steep, moderately heavy timber” when he was attacked, the Game and Fish said in a Tuesday news release.

The department said Smith “was unaware of the bear until it made contact with him.”

The adult male bear ultimately bit into a bottle of bear spray — still in its holster on the antler hunter’s hip — and it exploded in the bear’s mouth. The grizzly then disappeared into the thick woods.

“This is an unfortunate example of just how quickly these things happen. He [Spencer Smith] wasn’t able to get his bear spray out of his holster because it just happened so fast. He didn’t have any warning that it was coming,” Cody Region Wildlife Supervisor Dan Smith said in a Tuesday interview.

He added in a statement that, “the bear was likely behaving in a defensive manner resulting from an unexpected, close encounter.”

The experienced backcountry hiker was near the East Painter Creek drainage, said Game Warden Chris Queen, and had done everything right leading up to the attack. Spencer Smith contacted Queen prior to heading out on his hike, asking about bear activity in the area and relaying his plans to the game warden. Smith was carrying bear spray and a Garmin inReach satellite communication device, allowing him to signal for help after the attack.

Queen responded to the scene, finding Smith’s ATV parked near the drainage. Soon after, Smith walked out of the woods to Queen.

“I tried to not let my eyes tell him how bad it was,” Queen said in a Tuesday interview.

He said it was Spencer Smith’s resilience that got him back to safety.

“The most significant factor to him making it out was his toughness,” Queen said.

The game warden tended to Smith until a helicopter from Guardian Flight arrived. It took him

to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings around noon — only about an hour and 15 minutes after he signaled for help. Smith was released from the hospital on Saturday.

“This is a very traumatic experience for a person to go through,” Dan Smith said in Tuesday’s release.

“We wish Spencer the very best for a full and speedy recovery.”

The Game and Fish found a bear daybed “in heavy cover,” about 30 yards from the attack. Evidence at the scene indicated that the bear was either in or near that daybed at the time of the incident.

Game and Fish personnel were unable to locate the animal.

“There’s no way for us to identify the bear,” Dan Smith said. “Obviously, there’s more than one bear in the area.”

With the incident apparently involving a surprise encounter and the department unable to find the bear, “Game and Fish does not plan to take management action at this time, and no area closures have been implemented,” the department said in its release. “Game and Fish will continue to monitor bear activity in the area and will make management decisions in the best interest of public safety.”

Queen said you never know what a bear will do in these situations and it’s hard to be prepared for an attack that happens so quickly.

In 2010, Queen was riding his horse in the Sunlight district when a thunderstorm rolled in. He waited out the storm under a spruce tree with the horse and his red heeler. After the storm passed, he headed up Blacktail creek, north of Crandall, and saw a sow and her cub at a distance moving toward him.

“There were no bluff charges, the bear just kept coming. At about 25 yards she rounded a big root ball of a spruce that had tipped over. She turned and came at me like a cutting horse,” Queen recounted.

“I let her get within 30 feet before I let her have it with my spray.”

A cloud of orange went out, hanging long enough for the bear to run into it. She dropped her back legs and slid to a stop.

“If you spend enough time out in that country, eventually you’re going to have an encounter,” the game warden said. “That encounter could be good or it could be bad.”

After the encounter Queen began drawing his can of bear spray if he couldn’t see more than 50 yards ahead. He also likes to carry two cans of spray if he’s out for more than a day hike. “What if you see two bears?” he asked rhetorically.

In 2018, Queen was forced to shoot a charging grizzly in self-defense. With a strong wind in his face, bear spray wasn’t a viable option. In those conditions, an investigator said, Queen could have incapacitated himself or died if he’d tried to use the spray.

In Spencer Smith’s case, “there may have been nothing he could have done to ward off the attack.

Even if he was with a half-dozen people, you never know the frame of mind of a bear,” Queen said.

“Until you are confronted with something like that — with a bear coming at you — you have no comprehension of how fast they truly are.”

Lampman is organizing a community garden

By Ana Bykhovskaia abykhovskaia@estevanmercury.ca With spring getting into full bloom, the itch for gardening is getting stronger and stronger. But not everyone has room and capacities to create a garden, so Lampman resident Mark Morissette decided to take matters into his own hands and reached out to the town.

“We talked about the possibility of the community garden. It will give people something to do,” said Morissette.

Fortunately, the Town of Lampman had a decent lot available that they were willing to allocate for the project. They will have to mow it and probably bring in the dirt, but the first steps are made.

“They said, ‘If you are willing to organize everything and look after it, you are more than welcome to try to make this a go,’” recalled Morissette.

And it went from there. Currently, Morissette is gathering people who are willing to get a plot. By last Friday after just a couple of days promoting the idea, he had six people on the list.

“Once we have a determined list of names, if there is not enough room the town actually suggested to possibly put a second plot if there was enough interest,” said Morissette.

“So far it seems fairly positive. It gives people something to do, with everything that’s going on people will be looking into more of something to do on their own. In our case, we’d like to have our own vegetables and teach the kids a little bit about how

to plant the garden and what you need to do to look after it. And then it gives somebody something to do in the evening.”

Morissette has the majority of tools needed for gardening, which he is willing to share. COVID-19 related precaution rules will be put in place once the project gets going.

“Once we do have approval and then get a final count on who is interested, what we’ll do is we’ll make up the plots and then probably set up a schedule, just so not everybody is there at once.”

The community garden will be on 307 Second Avenue in Lampman. Morissette and his neighbour already went out to the plot to check what work needs to be done and to start planning for the garden. The plot sizes and organization of the garden are to be decided yet. But the project should be a go with any number of participants.

“We’ll just utilize the space. Some people might want just a smaller plot, some might want a bigger one.”

The lot is 50 by 125 feet, so Morissette assumes it can easily be split into 10-12 beds.

“It’s a big garden and we can get a lot of coverage in there.”

The town said they will have water provided for the community members. They will also bring the heavier equipment to till it up and get it going.

Morissette will donate the garden hose and the sprinkler system.

Since the initial work will be done by the town and Morissette will help with equipment, at this point he doesn’t foresee any cost for gardeners.

“The only real cost will be just time put in by members of the community to make it successful.”

The details will become more clear in midMay when Lampman is holding a town hall meeting where they will discuss the project. Morissette would like to see the garden space set around May 20 so people could start planting.

Southeast farmers have started seeding

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury Michael Brown is excited to be back into the field and begin seeding, even though the wet field conditions are going to pose a challenge this year.

Brown has nearly 5,000 acres of land nine kilometres south of Carlyle. He’ll seed canola, wheat, durum, peas, lentils and soybeans this year, which are the traditional crops for the operation.

“It’s going well so far,” he told Agri News.

“We’re picking away at our dry ground, but we’re starting to get into our wet ground. We’re probably going to get the harrows and try to dry the ground.”

Dry areas where he has been able to seed are largely southeast of Carlyle. Now that he’s started seeding straight south of the town, the land is getting wetter – a remnant of the moisture that many producers in the southeast had to contend with last fall.

“Wherever we got more rain last fall, it seems to be wetter in those areas right now,” said Brown.

As of Thursday afternoon, he had seeded about 1,200 acres, so he was roughly a quarter of the way finished. His progress so far has been normal for this time of year.

He hopes the conditions will remain dry until seeding is finished.

His equipment has been co-operative.

“We haven’t had any major breakdowns yet, just typical little things like hoses and everything, but every farm has those issues.”

Other farmers he has talked to have encountered similar issues with moisture in the ground. Some have had their equipment get stuck.

Seeding for Brown started on May 1, and he decided it was the best time to get started.

“I was waiting for temperatures to warm up a bit, but I figured

with the thermometer in the ground, it seemed to be decent there, and the ground I had started on, it was dry enough.

I knew if I didn’t have that land where it was, I wouldn’t have started until now.”

Brown was one of the fortunate producers in the southeast who was able to finish harvest last year, but he has neighbours and other friends who still have crop remaining from last year.

They’ll begin seeding this year even though they haven’t finished last year’s harvest. Due to the wet ground, they might not finish last year’s harvest until this year’s seeding is complete.

Brown is hopeful for a good year this year. While the moisture is a challenge, he’s glad to have moisture in the ground, a luxury he didn’t have in some recent years, when drought conditions have been a problem for producers.
