Every soldier has a story Kelly Johnson The Observer During World War II, Holland was occupied by the German forces and was repatriated by Canadian soldiers. Some of these Canadian soldiers had roots close to home here in the Carlyle area.

One such soldier was the brother of Dave McDonell, a long time resident of Carlyle.

His brother, Trooper Jack Alexander McDonell, was one of the soldiers in the liberation of Holland. He was laid to rest in the town of Bergen op Zoom, having lost his life while working to repair a tank. The country of Holland has always been forever grateful to Canada and the soldiers that freed the country from Nazi occupation.

Craig Lewis, who is a nephew of The McDonell brothers, received an email in October of 2019 from a 16-year-old high school student from Holland by the name of Desiree van Aert.

She was working on a school research project.

Her school, Het Mollerlyceum, is in the village of Halsteren, part of the town of Bergen op Zoom.

The project was designed so that this generation of Dutch students would be aware and learn of the sacrifices of the past.

Each student was assigned a soldier from the cemetery located in the community to research and tell their story.

Aert’s family had just recently travelled to Canada in 2018 to visit family and made a road trip from Calgary to Vancouver Island. This trip sparked Aert’s interest to research Trooper McDonell’s service.

In one of her emails she states, “I totally agree about every soldier having their own story and having made the ultimate sacrifice. I am really glad there is still one sibling alive who knew Jack (Trooper McDonell) before he went to Europe.”

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • An individual accidentally called 911 instead of 411 and they were embarrassed about it. A further accidental 911 occurred when an individual dropped their electronic device. Finally, a third resulted in a patrol to a residence where everyone appeared surprised that 911 was called. Remember folks we are obligated to investigate all 911 calls and we take them seriously.

• A domestic assault resulted in one individual being charged and released on conditions. Those conditions always involve no contact with the victim. This is unfortunately a necessary condition and a valuable condition.

• An individual was causing problems at a residence, however, departed before the arrival of the Police.

• We had an utter threats file that started with comments on social media and then resulted in a verbal discussion. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, what goes out on social media often stays on social media and it is hard to take those comments back. It is challenging times right now for our country with blockades and barricades. If we spent more time communicating in a productive calm matter I surely hope we would be able to resolve matters before involving the Police.

• An individual was driving down the highway and his vehicle caught fire. The Volunteer Fire Department attended, however, they could only put out the fire. It is amazing how flammable a vehicle is.

Carnduff area preparing for annual festival

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury A decades-long tradition will be making its return to the southeast corner of the province next month.

The 61st annual Carnduff and District Music and Arts Festival will take place March 8-12 at locations in Carnduff and Oxbow. About 250 entries have been received for the event.

It will open with the strings and guitar competition on March 8. Piano will be March 9-11, and instrumental and band will also happen March 11.

Speech arts, vocal performances and musical theatre happen March 12.

“As always, we have a great deal of talent in our area,” said Pamela Dmytriw, who is the president of the music festival committee. “We are finding that in our guitar and our speech arts and our vocal, we lost a few senior students last year, so we’re kind of in a building year with the younger children again.”

The piano division has several skilled senior students who will graduate high school in 2020, she said, so it’s a great year to come out and listen to them before they move on to post-secondary education.

All of the disciplines are at the Carnduff branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, except for band and instrumental, which is at the Oxbow Prairie Horizons School.

The festival highlights and awards program will be March 16 at the Carnduff legion. Twenty-four of the top performers from the different disciplines will be invited to play their selections from the festival, and all those selected to receive scholarships this year will be recognized.

Four adjudicators have been lined up. Rudolf Sterndel will be the adjudicator for strings and guitar, Loren Hiebert will be tasked with piano, Wendy Zander McCallum will look after band and instru-

mental performers, and Brett Mitchell will evaluate vocal, speech arts and musical theatre.

Kicking off the festival’s activities will be a strawberry tea Feb. 29.

“It will be an opportunity for anyone in the community to perform,” said Dmytriw. “They can be festival participants and practise their festival pieces.

It’s at the legion, the same as our festival is, so it’s a chance to use the piano and the use the space to see how it feels. But we also welcome community members to participate.”

The festival also features an arts component.

Traditionally submissions have been based around a theme for the festival, but this year it has been opened up to any artistic piece. Then the artists will be divided into categories.

“Instead of having to create a piece of art based on the theme, this year anyone can enter, any child, and we also have an adult category as well.”

They will be eligible for various prizes and awards. Categories include black and white, colour and paint submissions, as well as one listed as other, which includes mixed media or collage. Participants are also divided into age groups of primary (nine and under) intermedia (under-13), senior (under-18) and adult (18 and up).

The arts component usually attracts 200-250 entries. Dmytriw credits the schools for being really good at getting their classes to participate and create something artistic. The committee hopes that this year’s changes will result in a more diverse selection of art for the festival.

She noted the festival wouldn’t exist without its volunteers, patrons and sponsors, and Dmytriw is grateful for their continued support.

There were no injuries and if I recall correctly only one tire survived. If you are ever near a vehicle fire, it is not the fuel tank exploding that should cause you concern. Steal belts from exploding tires. That is what I am always leery of.

• An erratic driver was reported operating a vehicle without a licence plate. A patrol was made and the vehicle was located, however, not in an erratic manner. The licence plate was found to be on the back seat. The driver subsequently received a ticket for not having the licence plate attached, a warning for not being able to produce their licence and an inspection notice to get the licence plate attached.

• A Member picked up a possible impaired driver who had to be brought to the hospital for a blood sample. Once we get the results back we are expecting to lay charges. The driver did receive a 72 hour suspension.

• We continue to receive reports of individuals drinking and driving after work or after extracurricular events. We follow up on these reports and some times we find the individuals. Thus if you are one of these individuals you might want to stop. You never know who me call the RCMP. • If you are in a collision that requires a tow truck or there is extensive damage to the vehicle or property you are required by law to report it as soon as possible to the RCMP. Being everyone has a cell phone this should not take hours or a day. If you fail to report the collision we get suspicious and often lay a charge of failing to report a collision.

• Members issued approximately 40 tickets and 60 warnings over the past week.

• Tickets were issued for driving with undue care and attention - $580, no insurance -$580, liquor in a vehicle -$360, fail to produce registration - $100, fail to stop at a stop sign - $230, fail to maintain daily logs - $150, fail to wear seatbelt $175, fail to display licence plate -$100, window tint -$115, cell phone $580, inadequate windshield - $115, fail to comply with licence endorsement - $150, and the most expensive speeding ticket was for $742.

• Warnings were issued for uninsured motor vehicle or trailer, fail to stop at a stop sign, inadequate windshield, fail to produce registration, fail to produce drivers licence, inadequate speedometer, inadequate licence plate, insecure load, obstructed licence plate, fail to comply with licence endorsement, inadequate bumpers, fail to emit red tail light, use a cell phone, fail to change address on registration or drivers licence and speeding.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate windshield, remove window tint, attach licence plate, inadequate licence plate lights, replace blue headlights with white headlights, inadequate mudflaps and fenders and inadequate day time running lights.

Political acrimony needs to tone down

It’s what our teachers used to tell us when we were misbehaving.

And it appears it’s what politicians and stakeholders behaving like unmanageable petulance children now need to hear.

Some might argue they’ve always behaved this way, but it sure feels different. It’s gotten really bad.

Petty complaints. Nasty name-calling. Ceaseless grievances. Perpetual outrage. And an arrogant refusal to listen to the other side always deemed to be stupid, immoral or unworthy. This is not good.

Yes, there’s a sitting minority Parliament in Ottawa and the Saskatchewan legislature resumes this week. That a non-confidence vote could happen any day spurring another nasty federal election and that the Saskatchewan legislature is in its last sitting before the next general election heightens tensions.

But what’s so different is the animosity is no longer confined to our political chambers or our elected politicians. It seems to be everybody and it sure seems everywhere.

And it’s pretty much remained at this manic level since the last federal election … or even long before, at least going back to the federal Liberal government implementation of the carbon tax.

About the only thing you can say is today’s childish antics know no political philosophy. Petty politics cuts across party lines today politicians and stakeholders seem to assume that’s how we want to see them do business these days.

Far too often, it’s the opposite of what most of us want.

For example, the Saskatchewan NDP recently got back a freedom of information request in what is another episode of childish behaviour on both sides.

It is childishly that Saskatchewan Party government has been charging thousands of dollars in FOI costs for basic information on cabinet ministers’ travel and other expenses that should be public without cost. Perhaps the government is doing this because past travel FOI has uncovered somewhat questionable choices.

However, the information Deputy Premier and Education Minister Gord Wyant eventually handed over had very little that would be considered untoward, other that maybe a couple $60 dinners with local Saskatoon MLA David Buckingham. He shouldn’t be paying for MLAs’ suppers.

But who would begrudge Wyant submitting a $9.77 coffee receipt for a coffee meeting with his deputy minister?

Well, the NDP, that’s who.

“It’s a very small amount but you have to take this in the larger context,” said NDP education critic Carla Beck, bemoaning the stalled negotiations with the provinces teachers who have been known to buy classroom supplies not funded by school board budgets.

Education is underfunded but complaining about $9.77 this seems to be about silliest, pettiest way to make that point.

It really doesn’t seem to matter whether the issue is big or small. Complex issues requiring thoughtful consideration are even more likely to be drowned out by angry hollering from side or other.

Consider Teck Frontier’s decision not to go ahead with its massive oilsands project. Yes, it’s about “regulatory uncertainty”, but the company spelled that most of the uncertainty is about the feasibility of heavy oil when investors want greener energy and when oil is at potentially unprofitable $50-plus a barrel.

Or consider some First Nation spokespeople arguing the rail blockades are necessary because “white settlers” don’t understand nothing has changed in the last 150 years.

Well, some things have changed. Since 1992, Saskatchewan First Nations, alone, have received $1.23 billion in land claim settlements, $952 million from the federal government and $273 million from the province.

Add $2 billion in residential school survivor compensation, federal settlement and apologies for the Sixties Scoop and gaming framework agreements worth hundreds of millions.

Sure, more has to be done and it’s not perfect.

There are always problems to fix.

But maybe if stopped all the hollering, we’d see things aren’t as broken as we think.

Having bought products from the company in the past, there was one item I was particularly excited about re-ordering. But after a quick scan of the catalogue and not being able to find it, the presenter told me it had been discontinued. SeriousShelley Luedtke ly? She assured me there was a new product I would likely enjoy if I wanted to give it a try. I didn’t want to give it a try. I wanted what I couldn’t have.

Our on-demand, instant access, want-what-wewant-when-we-want-it culture makes it difficult to accept that we can’t have something at any given point in time. When pretty much everything is available to us 24-hours a day we become accustomed to having access to anything at any time.

The thought of being denied is not a comfortable one for us, which is why some make an intentional effort this time of year to give something up. In the 40 days leading up to Easter, many individuals will choose to deny themselves something special to them. Popular choices include chocolate, coffee, or sugar or giving up an activity like watching TV, being on social media or going to the gym in favor of more time for study or prayer.

Giving up something is not easy because we don’t like to be uncomfortable. We struggle with the idea if it’s something we’ve never had to do before. It goes against what we know and how we live.

Beyond being a spiritual discipline, those outside of religious communities also tout the idea of giving something up, because it highlights where our time and energies are being spent.

That’s the thought behind the National Day of Unplugging which is set to be observed by people wanting, and willing, to disconnect from their digital

devices from sundown March 6 to sundown March 7. It is described as a 24-hour respite from technology, and those taking part will set aside their devices and focus on connecting with people and their community in real time.

Events are being held in numerous places encouraging people to be outside, go for walks, participate in sports, attend community center board game nights, or signing up for a painting or cooking class offered specifically during that time period. It’s one of those things that makes you wonder: do we really need a day to be reminded of this? Perhaps we do; and if so, let’s heed the nudge.

Beyond a practice of faith or national day, there just might be something to this whole thing of looking at our time, activities and appetites and determining if there is something that could, or should, go. We might discover an unexpected blessing in trying to give something up since it may introduce us to something we hadn’t thought to pursue before.

Because the true value in this is not short term deprivation, but rather long term transformation. In experiencing the lack of one thing we are able to find so much more. But only if we take the time to recognize where we can be making meaningful change.

The idea of giving something up can be uncomfortable because we are accustomed to such abundance. Not just in material things, although that’s true too, but also in what can attract our attention, draw out our enthusiasm or simply entertain us. But in that abundance it is easy to lose our way. We get so busy in our distractions we don’t have time for the divine. We are so used to having so much it can become unsettling to think about giving any of it up.

Or we are so afraid of missing the next post we fail to truly see what is happening in front of us.

Whatever motivates us to do it, we could find that when we aren’t trying to hang on to all of it, we will discern what we truly need. In giving something up we just might discover how much more there really is.

That’s my outlook.

allergy symptoms because allergens tend to stick to their paws and fur. Finally, dogs that have a tendency to be dominant may become even more so when sleeping in bed with their owner.

If you do decide to allow your dog to sleep in your bed, take some steps to safeguard your health.

Bathe your dog at least once a week and schedule regular visits with the veterinarian to ensure that your pet is healthy and up to date on its vaccinations.

On Feb. 15 the Alida Curling Club hosted their annual Ladies 1-D Bonspiel with six teams participating this year. As these teams arrived at the rink – hold and behold there were celebrities, hobbyists, boasters, gamers, originals, scarecrows, a bird all attired either in plan or blinding bright colors. What a scene.

The day began with breakfast being served to those who came to spend time at the rink. They served around 38 breakfasts before the curling got underway at 9 o’clock with lots of activity happening on both sheets of ice. Prizes were set out for the “Paper bag” Chinese auction. Throughout the day notes and judging were silently being observed by some

The six teams were The Dope & Daisy Florists (hobbyists), The Attitudes (boasters), The Alida Prime (originals), The Dominos (gamers), The Golden Girls (celebrities), and The Magpie & Crows (a bird and scarecrows). One could definitely say that these curlers had Great imagination skills with their costumes as well as their skill on the ice. The results of the bonspiel were as follows A-Event 1st place was Team Golden Girls, 2nd place – Team Alida Prime. BEvent 1st place was Team Magpie & Crows, 2nd place – Team Dominos. All curlers who had difficulty in having their curling rocks cross the hog line were required to pay the Hog-pail and at the end of the bonspiel one of these curlers would be the lucky one to receive the money collected – this lucky curler was Chris Beriault. Following the final games of the bonspiel a delicious supper of Beef Lasagna and Chicken Fettuccini was served to all curlers, spectators and anyone interested in enjoying some great food – a total of 58 suppers were served. Draws were then made for the “Paper bag” auction and many happy winners walked away with a prize bringing the event to a close. The Curling Club once again appreciates all those who participated, volunteered, donated and made this another success event. Hope to see everyone again next year.

There was also a scheduled hockey game being held at the rink during that afternoon where Jason’s Jr. Wrecks Team played against Ninga, MB Team.

The game resulted in Ninga defeating the Jr. Wrecks by a score 5-3 – congratulations team. There were 50/50 tickets sold throughout the game and the draw was made during the last intermission with Bill Herd being drawn as the lucky winner who received $965 – Congratulations Bill.

Bob Harrison returned home Feb. 26 from a month’s long holiday. First he flew out to Thunder Bay, ON where he visited with his nephew Bruce Harrison. After spending a few days there they headed back out West by vehicle through the United States and up into Alberta where they stopped at Sylvan Lake to visit with Bob’s family Bobbi-Jo Monroe and family as well as with Clayton, Amy Harrison and boys. They then drove to Lashburn, SK where they visited with Betty-Jo, Arron DeJong and family before arriving back home to Alida.

Great grandpa Bob Harrison was very proud when he received word that his first great grandchild, Brekken Robert Lindsay surprised everyone by arriving early on Feb. 17, weighing 2 lbs., 7 oz.

Brekken will be staying in the Jim Pattison Hospital in Saskatoon until his due date of May 11. His par-

ents, Courtney DeJong and Cody Lindsay reports that the little fellow is doing fine.

Faye Walker left on Feb. 27 for Saskatoon where she accompanied her daughter Deidra Nickel and granddaughter Abigail to Edmonton on the 28th.

They attended the Slush Cup Soccer tournament as Abby was participating in this tournament and they all enjoyed some shopping before returning to Saskatoon. Faye later returned home to Alida on Mar. 2.

Leonard and Lil Patton spent the weekend (Feb. 29 to Mar. 1) in Virden, MB where they attended the volleyball tournament participating was their granddaughter Cordelia Patton. Their team won the Bronze – way to go girls – Congratulations.

Wishing all who have had the misfortune of receiving an injury, being hospitalized or just maybe not feeling up to par right now, a speedy recovery and hopefully you will be back out and about among the rest of us. Take care.

Well I believe that March came in as a “tame” lion as it was fairly cool and windy, overcast with lite snow flurries in the morning of Mar. 1. Later the sun did come out but it remained cool and fairly windy.

Hopefully the “lambs” will come out in full force and chase the lion away. Now what do you think of my predictions? Oh boy that could be a loaded question – so no comment please.

Sunday Breakfast on Mar. 1 had Kitchen Group # 2 serving up 40 breakfasts – Way to go Guys and Gals, another successful morning. It’s so nice to see all the familiar faces returning back each week as well as new ones from both near and far. We definitely appreciate your continued support – Please Come again. Do take note that there are only FOUR more Breakfasts left – the countdown is on. Next Sunday, Mar. 8 – will see Kitchen Group # 3 back at the helm again. See you at the rink.

Agriculture update event provides insight to farmers Kelly Johnson The Observer On Tuesday, Feb. 25 farmers and non-farmers interested in the agricultural industry, gathered at the Ramada Hotel in Carlyle, where they were given some insight on a multitude of topics on areas of importance to the agriculture industry. Meyers Norris Penny, Western Ag and RBC gave presentations on management, farm practices and economic challenges that are constants in the agriculture industry.

Sean Taylor of MNP’s Regina’s office, spoke on farm profitability. He broke it into three categories; Farm Profit Analysis, using Benchmarking to Make Improvements and Managing Risks.

1. Farm Profits are directly related to weather, markets, crop selection and management execution.

For the individual farmer this comes down to balancing what you can control (labour and machinery costs) against what there is no way to manage (weather, world markets).

2. Benchmarking is the relationship of one producer’s costs and profits and how they compare to

other farms. This can identify ways to be more profitable by seeing similar practices of top producers.

3. Risk Management covered the roll of insurance, as well as other factors, namely good accounting and where the business is financially tracking, will create stability and sustainability.

Western Ag’s presentation was by Edgar Hammermeister, who is the Manager of Professional Agronomy for Southeast Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The presentation identified the effects of crop planning and inputs and how this planning can enhance the bottom line. More specifically the importance of a “balanced diet” for the plant, crop selection and rotation, the relationship more rain can have to the availability of nutrients in the soil, the amount and type of fertilizer, all of which affect the bottom line. Over fertilization can actually increase disease as well as cause lodging and loss of yield.

The business of farming requires a fine balance between simple logistics and optimizing yields.

Making things too simple also can leave a lot of dol-

lars on the table.

RBC presented Farmer 4.0, which is a research study regarding the sustainability of farming explaining how the coming skills revolution can transform agriculture. The agricultural industry has gone through three major changes to become the industry it is today and will see another as farmers move towards advanced technologies, using drones and automation.

Giving the presentation was Angie Turpie, Lea Warkentin, Anita Keys, Dawson Switzer and Matt Shirky. They covered the aging farm population, the need for new labour, identifying the need to import machinery, as the greater percentage of equipment used on Canadian farms is manufactured outside Canada.

Canadian agriculture is well positioned to lead farm production in the future.

Arcola Skating Club presents “Winter Wonderland” Kelly Johnson The Observer February 29 was an expressly distinct evening on the calendar at Prairie Place in Arcola, the venue for Arcola Skating Club’s “Winter Wonderland” ice show.

The production was enjoyed by a very enthusiastic crowd from the opening routine, which was performed by all skaters, to the song “Ice Ice Baby”.

The show was comprised of solos, duets and group skating acts, all wonderfully performed to music which was themed after the show’s title.

Guest skater for the evening was Tristan Taylor who is a member of the Regina club, “Skate Regina”.

Taylor is the reigning Saskatchewan Junior men’s champion. He has skated in the Canadian Championships the last three seasons, placing second in pairs in Mississauga, Ontario in 2020.

The president of the Arcola Skating Club is Vanessa Dahl, Ice Show Chair was Trish McNeil and Emcee was Michael Wyatt.

The event included a 50/50 draw, numerous prize draws, and a “gourmet” hot chocolate bar. The Arcola-Kisbey Combines hockey team volunteered for the kitchen during the ice show.

Shift to the Exterior...

What is the current trend in home exteriors and is this a look I want for my home? This is such a common question! The exterior is the part of the home that we don’t change often, as it can be a large and expensive undertaking. It is also the part of the home that welcomes (or deters) people to our home, so changes must be thought through thoroughly, and it is highly recommended that we seek professional advice before digging in to any major project!

We are currently seeing a massive revisit to the popularity of front porches, which bring an inviting and relaxing feel to a home. The front porch evokes thoughts of a simpler time, and encourages feelings of slowing down and enjoying downtime. It helps set the stage and ties quite nicely with the modern farmhouse look that is also very popular.

This look includes many beautiful architectural features like varied rooines, board, and batten siding, combined with bricks, timbers, and rock, which add a cozy charming feeling to your home. While the front porch helps to draw us outdoors, we are also seeing doors and windows that provide expansive views to backyard living which has become another welcoming feature in your home and an amazing backdrop and a way to complete the story of your home. This allows us to enjoy the feeling of being outside while completing the necessary indoor tasks of everyday.

Then we are jumping to the other side of the spectrum in looks and are loving the mixed materials of big square structures, an open, fresh, and clean look. This look includes large vertical windows which really show off at roof lines and help to emphasize the height and grandeur of this sharp looking home. This style calls for different uses of rock combined with rocky stucco, tin, and cement board, as well as warm woods done both vertical and horizontal placements. Dark roong and iron railed decking help to enhance the lines of this home and make it even more bold and striking.

What I want you to recognize in both of these homes that truly are different styles and for different people, is that they have the same overall concept. What they have in common is that they are using the same “many different textures” which makes for an interesting home. Where the modern farmhouse says, “Look at how quaint, warm, and welcoming I am, come in for a visit!”, the square structured home says, “I am bold, inviting, and intriguing.

Welcome!” So, they may have different messages, but they both succeed in grabbing your attention.

The other big exterior trend is outdoor living spaces. We want people to come into our homes and enjoy them, but we want them to also enjoy our outdoor spaces with us too. We want our home to have an extension when the weather permits to bring people into our backyards and enjoy a great meal, enjoy the weather, and entertain in a larger setting. A front porch lets you take an ordinary home on a different path and is a great place to bring in some warm woods, rock, and other textures.

We want to make people take a second look when they are driving by, stop in and have them sit down in the back yard or on the front porch and enjoy a visit over steak and beer! And those of you who would; you are my kind of people!

Clifford met his future wife in a store, where he was giving condolences to a friend.

Joyce met her husband at an Eastern Star event.

Carol met her husband in a church congregation. Pastor Alex and Amber met at Bible College. Mary Thiessen met Bob at a summer church camp.

Leora was working for a lady with rheumatic fever. She had six sons, so Leora chose the eldest. Janet’s cousin introduced her to the secretary of Redvers

Fair, who had a green chev. Joan met hers when she was stuck in ditch. When he came home from the war he asked, “Do you want to go farming?”

Friends from Russell, MB visited Joyce.

Carlyle Elementary School closing in on fundraising goals Kelly Johnson The Observer Carlyle Elementary School has been raising funds for new playground equipment.

A few years ago each school in the division went through a safety audit, which resulted in the CES having to remove play equipment deemed unsafe and make plans to find suitable replacement play structures.

So far the School Community Council (SCC), through various fundraisers and grants, has accumulated approximately $85,000.

The total cost for the planned play structures, one for each of the school’s two playgrounds, is $103,000.

Getting up close and personal at the reptile show Kelly Johnson The Observer On Wednesday, Feb. 26, Carlyle Cornerstone Family and Youth Centre (CFY) hosted The Saskatchewan Reptile Show.

Honoured reptile guests included: The “red tagu” lizard native to Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay; The “blue tongued skink” which is found in Australia; The “leopard gecko” found in the highlands of Asia, throughout Afghanistan and northern India; The “ball python” is home to West and Central Africa; The “corn snake” makes it home in Southeastern and Central USA and The “painted turtle” which can be found in North America from Southern Canada to Mexico.

The special presentation was held during the regular Parent and Child Playdate that CFY co-ordinates at the Southeast Regional Library in Carlyle.

There were 30 intrigued kids in attendance and surprisingly, only a couple of them were adverse to the reptiles.

They were allowed to handle the animals under the supervision of Wrangler Chris, who was the presenter of the reptiles and made the journey to Carlyle from Colonsay, where the animals reside and are provided shelter.

Be sure to check with the Southeast Regional Library and CFY for events and programs in the community.

The colourful corn snake sparked the kids’ interest.

The Ball Python keeps its wrap on Wrangler Chris.

The Red Tagu is a cuddly lizard.

The Skink was an attention getter and crowd pleaser.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • An individual accidentally called 911 instead of 411 and they were embarrassed about it. A further accidental 911 occurred when an individual dropped their electronic device. Finally, a third resulted in a patrol to a residence where everyone appeared surprised that 911 was called. Remember folks we are obligated to investigate all 911 calls and we take them seriously.

• A domestic assault resulted in one individual being charged and released on conditions. Those conditions always involve no contact with the victim. This is unfortunately a necessary condition and a valuable condition.

• An individual was causing problems at a residence, however, departed before the arrival of the Police.

• We had an utter threats file that started with comments on social media and then resulted in a verbal discussion. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, what goes out on social media often stays on social media and it is hard to take those comments back. It is challenging times right now for our country with blockades and barricades. If we spent more time communicating in a productive calm matter I surely hope we would be able to resolve matters before involving the Police.

• An individual was driving down the highway and his vehicle caught fire. The Volunteer Fire Department attended, however, they could only put out the fire. It is amazing how flammable a vehicle is.

Carnduff area preparing for annual festival

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury A decades-long tradition will be making its return to the southeast corner of the province next month.

The 61st annual Carnduff and District Music and Arts Festival will take place March 8-12 at locations in Carnduff and Oxbow. About 250 entries have been received for the event.

It will open with the strings and guitar competition on March 8. Piano will be March 9-11, and instrumental and band will also happen March 11.

Speech arts, vocal performances and musical theatre happen March 12.

“As always, we have a great deal of talent in our area,” said Pamela Dmytriw, who is the president of the music festival committee. “We are finding that in our guitar and our speech arts and our vocal, we lost a few senior students last year, so we’re kind of in a building year with the younger children again.”

The piano division has several skilled senior students who will graduate high school in 2020, she said, so it’s a great year to come out and listen to them before they move on to post-secondary education.

All of the disciplines are at the Carnduff branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, except for band and instrumental, which is at the Oxbow Prairie Horizons School.

The festival highlights and awards program will be March 16 at the Carnduff legion. Twenty-four of the top performers from the different disciplines will be invited to play their selections from the festival, and all those selected to receive scholarships this year will be recognized.

Four adjudicators have been lined up. Rudolf Sterndel will be the adjudicator for strings and guitar, Loren Hiebert will be tasked with piano, Wendy Zander McCallum will look after band and instru-

mental performers, and Brett Mitchell will evaluate vocal, speech arts and musical theatre.

Kicking off the festival’s activities will be a strawberry tea Feb. 29.

“It will be an opportunity for anyone in the community to perform,” said Dmytriw. “They can be festival participants and practise their festival pieces.

It’s at the legion, the same as our festival is, so it’s a chance to use the piano and the use the space to see how it feels. But we also welcome community members to participate.”

The festival also features an arts component.

Traditionally submissions have been based around a theme for the festival, but this year it has been opened up to any artistic piece. Then the artists will be divided into categories.

“Instead of having to create a piece of art based on the theme, this year anyone can enter, any child, and we also have an adult category as well.”

They will be eligible for various prizes and awards. Categories include black and white, colour and paint submissions, as well as one listed as other, which includes mixed media or collage. Participants are also divided into age groups of primary (nine and under) intermedia (under-13), senior (under-18) and adult (18 and up).

The arts component usually attracts 200-250 entries. Dmytriw credits the schools for being really good at getting their classes to participate and create something artistic. The committee hopes that this year’s changes will result in a more diverse selection of art for the festival.

She noted the festival wouldn’t exist without its volunteers, patrons and sponsors, and Dmytriw is grateful for their continued support.

There were no injuries and if I recall correctly only one tire survived. If you are ever near a vehicle fire, it is not the fuel tank exploding that should cause you concern. Steal belts from exploding tires. That is what I am always leery of.

• An erratic driver was reported operating a vehicle without a licence plate. A patrol was made and the vehicle was located, however, not in an erratic manner. The licence plate was found to be on the back seat. The driver subsequently received a ticket for not having the licence plate attached, a warning for not being able to produce their licence and an inspection notice to get the licence plate attached.

• A Member picked up a possible impaired driver who had to be brought to the hospital for a blood sample. Once we get the results back we are expecting to lay charges. The driver did receive a 72 hour suspension.

• We continue to receive reports of individuals drinking and driving after work or after extracurricular events. We follow up on these reports and some times we find the individuals. Thus if you are one of these individuals you might want to stop. You never know who me call the RCMP. • If you are in a collision that requires a tow truck or there is extensive damage to the vehicle or property you are required by law to report it as soon as possible to the RCMP. Being everyone has a cell phone this should not take hours or a day. If you fail to report the collision we get suspicious and often lay a charge of failing to report a collision.

• Members issued approximately 40 tickets and 60 warnings over the past week.

• Tickets were issued for driving with undue care and attention - $580, no insurance -$580, liquor in a vehicle -$360, fail to produce registration - $100, fail to stop at a stop sign - $230, fail to maintain daily logs - $150, fail to wear seatbelt $175, fail to display licence plate -$100, window tint -$115, cell phone $580, inadequate windshield - $115, fail to comply with licence endorsement - $150, and the most expensive speeding ticket was for $742.

• Warnings were issued for uninsured motor vehicle or trailer, fail to stop at a stop sign, inadequate windshield, fail to produce registration, fail to produce drivers licence, inadequate speedometer, inadequate licence plate, insecure load, obstructed licence plate, fail to comply with licence endorsement, inadequate bumpers, fail to emit red tail light, use a cell phone, fail to change address on registration or drivers licence and speeding.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate windshield, remove window tint, attach licence plate, inadequate licence plate lights, replace blue headlights with white headlights, inadequate mudflaps and fenders and inadequate day time running lights.

Political acrimony needs to tone down

It’s what our teachers used to tell us when we were misbehaving.

And it appears it’s what politicians and stakeholders behaving like unmanageable petulance children now need to hear.

Some might argue they’ve always behaved this way, but it sure feels different. It’s gotten really bad.

Petty complaints. Nasty name-calling. Ceaseless grievances. Perpetual outrage. And an arrogant refusal to listen to the other side always deemed to be stupid, immoral or unworthy. This is not good.

Yes, there’s a sitting minority Parliament in Ottawa and the Saskatchewan legislature resumes this week. That a non-confidence vote could happen any day spurring another nasty federal election and that the Saskatchewan legislature is in its last sitting before the next general election heightens tensions.

But what’s so different is the animosity is no longer confined to our political chambers or our elected politicians. It seems to be everybody and it sure seems everywhere.

And it’s pretty much remained at this manic level since the last federal election … or even long before, at least going back to the federal Liberal government implementation of the carbon tax.

About the only thing you can say is today’s childish antics know no political philosophy. Petty politics cuts across party lines today politicians and stakeholders seem to assume that’s how we want to see them do business these days.

Far too often, it’s the opposite of what most of us want.

For example, the Saskatchewan NDP recently got back a freedom of information request in what is another episode of childish behaviour on both sides.

It is childishly that Saskatchewan Party government has been charging thousands of dollars in FOI costs for basic information on cabinet ministers’ travel and other expenses that should be public without cost. Perhaps the government is doing this because past travel FOI has uncovered somewhat questionable choices.

However, the information Deputy Premier and Education Minister Gord Wyant eventually handed over had very little that would be considered untoward, other that maybe a couple $60 dinners with local Saskatoon MLA David Buckingham. He shouldn’t be paying for MLAs’ suppers.

But who would begrudge Wyant submitting a $9.77 coffee receipt for a coffee meeting with his deputy minister?

Well, the NDP, that’s who.

“It’s a very small amount but you have to take this in the larger context,” said NDP education critic Carla Beck, bemoaning the stalled negotiations with the provinces teachers who have been known to buy classroom supplies not funded by school board budgets.

Education is underfunded but complaining about $9.77 this seems to be about silliest, pettiest way to make that point.

It really doesn’t seem to matter whether the issue is big or small. Complex issues requiring thoughtful consideration are even more likely to be drowned out by angry hollering from side or other.

Consider Teck Frontier’s decision not to go ahead with its massive oilsands project. Yes, it’s about “regulatory uncertainty”, but the company spelled that most of the uncertainty is about the feasibility of heavy oil when investors want greener energy and when oil is at potentially unprofitable $50-plus a barrel.

Or consider some First Nation spokespeople arguing the rail blockades are necessary because “white settlers” don’t understand nothing has changed in the last 150 years.

Well, some things have changed. Since 1992, Saskatchewan First Nations, alone, have received $1.23 billion in land claim settlements, $952 million from the federal government and $273 million from the province.

Add $2 billion in residential school survivor compensation, federal settlement and apologies for the Sixties Scoop and gaming framework agreements worth hundreds of millions.

Sure, more has to be done and it’s not perfect.

There are always problems to fix.

But maybe if stopped all the hollering, we’d see things aren’t as broken as we think.

Having bought products from the company in the past, there was one item I was particularly excited about re-ordering. But after a quick scan of the catalogue and not being able to find it, the presenter told me it had been discontinued. SeriousShelley Luedtke ly? She assured me there was a new product I would likely enjoy if I wanted to give it a try. I didn’t want to give it a try. I wanted what I couldn’t have.

Our on-demand, instant access, want-what-wewant-when-we-want-it culture makes it difficult to accept that we can’t have something at any given point in time. When pretty much everything is available to us 24-hours a day we become accustomed to having access to anything at any time.

The thought of being denied is not a comfortable one for us, which is why some make an intentional effort this time of year to give something up. In the 40 days leading up to Easter, many individuals will choose to deny themselves something special to them. Popular choices include chocolate, coffee, or sugar or giving up an activity like watching TV, being on social media or going to the gym in favor of more time for study or prayer.

Giving up something is not easy because we don’t like to be uncomfortable. We struggle with the idea if it’s something we’ve never had to do before. It goes against what we know and how we live.

Beyond being a spiritual discipline, those outside of religious communities also tout the idea of giving something up, because it highlights where our time and energies are being spent.

devices from sundown March 6 to sundown March 7. It is described as a 24-hour respite from technology, and those taking part will set aside their devices and focus on connecting with people and their community in real time.

Events are being held in numerous places encouraging people to be outside, go for walks, participate in sports, attend community center board game nights, or signing up for a painting or cooking class offered specifically during that time period. It’s one of those things that makes you wonder: do we really need a day to be reminded of this? Perhaps we do; and if so, let’s heed the nudge.

Beyond a practice of faith or national day, there just might be something to this whole thing of looking at our time, activities and appetites and determining if there is something that could, or should, go. We might discover an unexpected blessing in trying to give something up since it may introduce us to something we hadn’t thought to pursue before.

Because the true value in this is not short term deprivation, but rather long term transformation. In experiencing the lack of one thing we are able to find so much more. But only if we take the time to recognize where we can be making meaningful change.

The idea of giving something up can be uncomfortable because we are accustomed to such abundance. Not just in material things, although that’s true too, but also in what can attract our attention, draw out our enthusiasm or simply entertain us. But in that abundance it is easy to lose our way. We get so busy in our distractions we don’t have time for the divine. We are so used to having so much it can become unsettling to think about giving any of it up.

Or we are so afraid of missing the next post we fail to truly see what is happening in front of us.

Whatever motivates us to do it, we could find that when we aren’t trying to hang on to all of it, we will discern what we truly need. In giving something up we just might discover how much more there really is.

That’s my outlook.

Bathe your dog at least once a week and schedule regular visits with the veterinarian to ensure that your pet is healthy and up to date on its vaccinations.

On Feb. 15 the Alida Curling Club hosted their annual Ladies 1-D Bonspiel with six teams participating this year. As these teams arrived at the rink – hold and behold there were celebrities, hobbyists, boasters, gamers, originals, scarecrows, a bird all attired either in plan or blinding bright colors. What a scene.

The day began with breakfast being served to those who came to spend time at the rink. They served around 38 breakfasts before the curling got underway at 9 o’clock with lots of activity happening on both sheets of ice. Prizes were set out for the “Paper bag” Chinese auction. Throughout the day notes and judging were silently being observed by some

The six teams were The Dope & Daisy Florists (hobbyists), The Attitudes (boasters), The Alida Prime (originals), The Dominos (gamers), The Golden Girls (celebrities), and The Magpie & Crows (a bird and scarecrows). One could definitely say that these curlers had Great imagination skills with their costumes as well as their skill on the ice. The results of the bonspiel were as follows A-Event 1st place was Team Golden Girls, 2nd place – Team Alida Prime. BEvent 1st place was Team Magpie & Crows, 2nd place – Team Dominos. All curlers who had difficulty in having their curling rocks cross the hog line were required to pay the Hog-pail and at the end of the bonspiel one of these curlers would be the lucky one to receive the money collected – this lucky curler was Chris Beriault. Following the final games of the bonspiel a delicious supper of Beef Lasagna and Chicken Fettuccini was served to all curlers, spectators and anyone interested in enjoying some great food – a total of 58 suppers were served. Draws were then made for the “Paper bag” auction and many happy winners walked away with a prize bringing the event to a close. The Curling Club once again appreciates all those who participated, volunteered, donated and made this another success event. Hope to see everyone again next year.

There was also a scheduled hockey game being held at the rink during that afternoon where Jason’s Jr. Wrecks Team played against Ninga, MB Team.

The game resulted in Ninga defeating the Jr. Wrecks by a score 5-3 – congratulations team. There were 50/50 tickets sold throughout the game and the draw was made during the last intermission with Bill Herd being drawn as the lucky winner who received $965 – Congratulations Bill.

Bob Harrison returned home Feb. 26 from a month’s long holiday. First he flew out to Thunder Bay, ON where he visited with his nephew Bruce Harrison. After spending a few days there they headed back out West by vehicle through the United States and up into Alberta where they stopped at Sylvan Lake to visit with Bob’s family Bobbi-Jo Monroe and family as well as with Clayton, Amy Harrison and boys. They then drove to Lashburn, SK where they visited with Betty-Jo, Arron DeJong and family before arriving back home to Alida.

Great grandpa Bob Harrison was very proud when he received word that his first great grandchild, Brekken Robert Lindsay surprised everyone by arriving early on Feb. 17, weighing 2 lbs., 7 oz.

Brekken will be staying in the Jim Pattison Hospital in Saskatoon until his due date of May 11. His par-

ents, Courtney DeJong and Cody Lindsay reports that the little fellow is doing fine.

Faye Walker left on Feb. 27 for Saskatoon where she accompanied her daughter Deidra Nickel and granddaughter Abigail to Edmonton on the 28th.

They attended the Slush Cup Soccer tournament as Abby was participating in this tournament and they all enjoyed some shopping before returning to Saskatoon. Faye later returned home to Alida on Mar. 2.

Leonard and Lil Patton spent the weekend (Feb. 29 to Mar. 1) in Virden, MB where they attended the volleyball tournament participating was their granddaughter Cordelia Patton. Their team won the Bronze – way to go girls – Congratulations.

Wishing all who have had the misfortune of receiving an injury, being hospitalized or just maybe not feeling up to par right now, a speedy recovery and hopefully you will be back out and about among the rest of us. Take care.

Well I believe that March came in as a “tame” lion as it was fairly cool and windy, overcast with lite snow flurries in the morning of Mar. 1. Later the sun did come out but it remained cool and fairly windy.

Hopefully the “lambs” will come out in full force and chase the lion away. Now what do you think of my predictions? Oh boy that could be a loaded question – so no comment please.

Sunday Breakfast on Mar. 1 had Kitchen Group # 2 serving up 40 breakfasts – Way to go Guys and Gals, another successful morning. It’s so nice to see all the familiar faces returning back each week as well as new ones from both near and far. We definitely appreciate your continued support – Please Come again. Do take note that there are only FOUR more Breakfasts left – the countdown is on. Next Sunday, Mar. 8 – will see Kitchen Group # 3 back at the helm again. See you at the rink.

Agriculture update event provides insight to farmers Kelly Johnson The Observer On Tuesday, Feb. 25 farmers and non-farmers interested in the agricultural industry, gathered at the Ramada Hotel in Carlyle, where they were given some insight on a multitude of topics on areas of importance to the agriculture industry. Meyers Norris Penny, Western Ag and RBC gave presentations on management, farm practices and economic challenges that are constants in the agriculture industry.

Sean Taylor of MNP’s Regina’s office, spoke on farm profitability. He broke it into three categories; Farm Profit Analysis, using Benchmarking to Make Improvements and Managing Risks.

1. Farm Profits are directly related to weather, markets, crop selection and management execution.

For the individual farmer this comes down to balancing what you can control (labour and machinery costs) against what there is no way to manage (weather, world markets).

2. Benchmarking is the relationship of one producer’s costs and profits and how they compare to

other farms. This can identify ways to be more profitable by seeing similar practices of top producers.

3. Risk Management covered the roll of insurance, as well as other factors, namely good accounting and where the business is financially tracking, will create stability and sustainability.

Western Ag’s presentation was by Edgar Hammermeister, who is the Manager of Professional Agronomy for Southeast Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The presentation identified the effects of crop planning and inputs and how this planning can enhance the bottom line. More specifically the importance of a “balanced diet” for the plant, crop selection and rotation, the relationship more rain can have to the availability of nutrients in the soil, the amount and type of fertilizer, all of which affect the bottom line. Over fertilization can actually increase disease as well as cause lodging and loss of yield.

The business of farming requires a fine balance between simple logistics and optimizing yields.

Making things too simple also can leave a lot of dol-

lars on the table.

RBC presented Farmer 4.0, which is a research study regarding the sustainability of farming explaining how the coming skills revolution can transform agriculture. The agricultural industry has gone through three major changes to become the industry it is today and will see another as farmers move towards advanced technologies, using drones and automation.

Giving the presentation was Angie Turpie, Lea Warkentin, Anita Keys, Dawson Switzer and Matt Shirky. They covered the aging farm population, the need for new labour, identifying the need to import machinery, as the greater percentage of equipment used on Canadian farms is manufactured outside Canada.

Canadian agriculture is well positioned to lead farm production in the future.

Arcola Skating Club presents “Winter Wonderland” Kelly Johnson The Observer February 29 was an expressly distinct evening on the calendar at Prairie Place in Arcola, the venue for Arcola Skating Club’s “Winter Wonderland” ice show.

The production was enjoyed by a very enthusiastic crowd from the opening routine, which was performed by all skaters, to the song “Ice Ice Baby”.

The show was comprised of solos, duets and group skating acts, all wonderfully performed to music which was themed after the show’s title.

Guest skater for the evening was Tristan Taylor who is a member of the Regina club, “Skate Regina”.

Taylor is the reigning Saskatchewan Junior men’s champion. He has skated in the Canadian Championships the last three seasons, placing second in pairs in Mississauga, Ontario in 2020.

The president of the Arcola Skating Club is Vanessa Dahl, Ice Show Chair was Trish McNeil and Emcee was Michael Wyatt.

The event included a 50/50 draw, numerous prize draws, and a “gourmet” hot chocolate bar. The Arcola-Kisbey Combines hockey team volunteered for the kitchen during the ice show.

ATTENTION Town of Carlyle & R.M. of Moose Mountain No. 63 Capital Recreation & Culture Funding Program The program is available to any Town of Carlyle recreation or cultural organization who is interested in obtaining funding for capital projects. The program consists of two components, an annual limited matching grant and a larger long term matching grant. Application deadlines are March 31st and September 30th of every year. Funding is limited and applications will be reviewed by the Recreation and Culture Foundation.

Shift to the Exterior...

What is the current trend in home exteriors and is this a look I want for my home? This is such a common question! The exterior is the part of the home that we don’t change often, as it can be a large and expensive undertaking. It is also the part of the home that welcomes (or deters) people to our home, so changes must be thought through thoroughly, and it is highly recommended that we seek professional advice before digging in to any major project!

We are currently seeing a massive revisit to the popularity of front porches, which bring an inviting and relaxing feel to a home. The front porch evokes thoughts of a simpler time, and encourages feelings of slowing down and enjoying downtime. It helps set the stage and ties quite nicely with the modern farmhouse look that is also very popular.

This look includes many beautiful architectural features like varied rooines, board, and batten siding, combined with bricks, timbers, and rock, which add a cozy charming feeling to your home. While the front porch helps to draw us outdoors, we are also seeing doors and windows that provide expansive views to backyard living which has become another welcoming feature in your home and an amazing backdrop and a way to complete the story of your home. This allows us to enjoy the feeling of being outside while completing the necessary indoor tasks of everyday.

Then we are jumping to the other side of the spectrum in looks and are loving the mixed materials of big square structures, an open, fresh, and clean look. This look includes large vertical windows which really show off at roof lines and help to emphasize the height and grandeur of this sharp looking home. This style calls for different uses of rock combined with rocky stucco, tin, and cement board, as well as warm woods done both vertical and horizontal placements. Dark roong and iron railed decking help to enhance the lines of this home and make it even more bold and striking.

What I want you to recognize in both of these homes that truly are different styles and for different people, is that they have the same overall concept. What they have in common is that they are using the same “many different textures” which makes for an interesting home. Where the modern farmhouse says, “Look at how quaint, warm, and welcoming I am, come in for a visit!”, the square structured home says, “I am bold, inviting, and intriguing.

Welcome!” So, they may have different messages, but they both succeed in grabbing your attention.

The other big exterior trend is outdoor living spaces. We want people to come into our homes and enjoy them, but we want them to also enjoy our outdoor spaces with us too. We want our home to have an extension when the weather permits to bring people into our backyards and enjoy a great meal, enjoy the weather, and entertain in a larger setting. A front porch lets you take an ordinary home on a different path and is a great place to bring in some warm woods, rock, and other textures.

We want to make people take a second look when they are driving by, stop in and have them sit down in the back yard or on the front porch and enjoy a visit over steak and beer! And those of you who would; you are my kind of people!

One of the men who came for dinner had a sore fingers, and “I had to cut his meat.” Ralph Mills mom was in hospital, and he met Bernice there. Clifford met his future wife in a store, where he was giving condolences to a friend.

Joyce met her husband at an Eastern Star event.

Carol met her husband in a church congregation. Pastor Alex and Amber met at Bible College. Mary Thiessen met Bob at a summer church camp.

Leora was working for a lady with rheumatic fever. She had six sons, so Leora chose the eldest. Janet’s cousin introduced her to the secretary of Redvers

Fair, who had a green chev. Joan met hers when she was stuck in ditch. When he came home from the war he asked, “Do you want to go farming?”

Friends from Russell, MB visited Joyce.

Carlyle Elementary School closing in on fundraising goals Kelly Johnson The Observer Carlyle Elementary School has been raising funds for new playground equipment.

A few years ago each school in the division went through a safety audit, which resulted in the CES having to remove play equipment deemed unsafe and make plans to find suitable replacement play structures.

So far the School Community Council (SCC), through various fundraisers and grants, has accumulated approximately $85,000.

The total cost for the planned play structures, one for each of the school’s two playgrounds, is $103,000.

Congratulations to the Senior Girls Curling Team who won the “B” side of the regional playoffs in Moosomin last weekend. They have advanced to the finals being held this next week. Members of the team are Madison Wilson, Hanna Johnson, Sierra Murray, Anna Van Winkoop and Jacey Patterson. Their coach is Duane Lamontagne.

Sympathy to Danielle and Andrew Brehaut and family on the passing of Danielle’s grandmother, Betty Spady of Mission,BC. She passed away on Jan. 29 at the age of 83 years.

Getting up close and personal at the reptile show Kelly Johnson The Observer On Wednesday, Feb. 26, Carlyle Cornerstone Family and Youth Centre (CFY) hosted The Saskatchewan Reptile Show.

Honoured reptile guests included: The “red tagu” lizard native to Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay; The “blue tongued skink” which is found in Australia; The “leopard gecko” found in the highlands of Asia, throughout Afghanistan and northern India; The “ball python” is home to West and Central Africa; The “corn snake” makes it home in Southeastern and Central USA and The “painted turtle” which can be found in North America from Southern Canada to Mexico.

The special presentation was held during the regular Parent and Child Playdate that CFY co-ordinates at the Southeast Regional Library in Carlyle.

There were 30 intrigued kids in attendance and surprisingly, only a couple of them were adverse to the reptiles.

They were allowed to handle the animals under the supervision of Wrangler Chris, who was the presenter of the reptiles and made the journey to Carlyle from Colonsay, where the animals reside and are provided shelter.

Be sure to check with the Southeast Regional Library and CFY for events and programs in the community.

The colourful corn snake sparked the kids’ interest.

The Ball Python keeps its wrap on Wrangler Chris.

The Red Tagu is a cuddly lizard.

The Skink was an attention getter and crowd pleaser.

The Painted Turtle seemed to be one of the favourites.
