The most coveted product here in Carlyle, as well as most every-

where else in the country, is toilet paper, followed by hand sanitizer, bleach, hand wipes and bottled water.

Food World and Southern Plains Co-op in Carlyle were sold out of toilet paper. Pharmasave and the Bargain Shop still had a good supply on hand. Alcohol based hand sanitizer was out at all locations, with people buying sup-

plies of isopropyl and ethyl alcohol to use as a substitute.

With a huge demand across the country for these products some locations in town may be subject to short supply and back orders.

For now shoppers can find most products to satisfy their needs, some ingenuity will be needed regarding the hand sanitizer.

Southern Plains Co-op in Carlyle had stocked the shelves for Saturday morning, selling out by noon.

Chris Kelloway, manager at the Co-op assessed the situation, “There are shortages nationwide, the procurement team is doing everything it can to secure the supply for retail locations.”

He added, the store “got busy Thursday” and compared it to a “long weekend in the summer months”.

Pharmasave also was very busy and shared that sales were substantially up in comparison to Christmas.

The Carlyle location had a good supply of toilet paper, but has several

items on back order, namely, hand wipes, latex gloves and masks.

The Bargain shop was also seeing an upswing in business and manager Melanie Benner had a supply of most items in demand and stated, “Toilet paper is on order and the shipment is verified,” and also noting, “cleaning wipes and Lysol were selling well.”

Carlyle Food World owner, Jin Lee, reported that the store was very busy and had not experienced any supply problems at the warehouse with the sold out

products, due to the added demand. He felt that the uptick in sales could be attributed to the warmer weather.”

Consumers can be relieved that you can shop locally and not have to drive to a larger centre for toilet paper at this time.

Some of the stores have and/or may put restrictions on quantities as they see fit, people are buying an extra one or two of these items and it is important not to “panic buy” causing shortages, as everyone has a need for these products.

There were approximately 100 quests (including family and friends) who attended the friendship luncheon at Alida Hall that followed the funeral mass at Cantal for Regina Cruywels on Saturday, Mar. 14.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan spent the weekend (March 14-15) in Weyburn where Ainsley was participating in a dance competition with her dance group from Redvers. After their first dance on Saturday the group got first place. Then on Sunday after their second performance they received a 2 – another good score – way to go girls.

Congratulations to the group and their instructors.

On Mar. 14 the Alida Rec. Board held their annual fundraiser at the Alida Rink. This year the event they hosted was a Steak Supper & Games Night. A very delicious Steak supper was served to and appreciated by the 70 people in attendance. Special acknowledgement and recognition goes out to the Prairie Pride Credit Union staff members who so graciously cooked the steaks to perfection and also to those who helped with the serving and clean-up. Following supper “Minute to Win It” games began when the first eight guests were drawn and called up to participate in their game before the next group was called. The following 12 games were played and the winner of each was recognized.

All the winners of these 12 games then moved on to participate in the next round of the “Ping Tac Toe” game which then would result with 6 winners (Kris Potapinski, Paul Coombes, Jesse Germain, Steven Bendtsen, Lil Patton and Lesa Bendtsen) who would participate in the next game of “Spin the Doctor”. Following this game the 3 winners (Lil Patton, Steven Bendtsen and Kris Potapinski) proceeded to the final game of “Up Hill Battle”. The result of this game was that Steven Bendtsen came out as the winner – he had his choice of any one of the raffle prizes. He chose the Light Bar donated

by Alida Farm and Auto.

The rest of the raffle prizes were then drawn bringing the evening to a close. The Alida Rec. Board once again appreciates the continued support that they receive with their fundraising events – whether it be with prize donations, attendances and participants, or volunteer helpers and workers. It was once again another successful event for them.

Carrie Sauer, Regina visited over the weekend (Mar. 14-15) with her daughter, Melissa and Kris Potapinski and babysat grandson Carson while his parents attended the Steak Night at Alida Rink Saturday

night.

Visitors down for the weekend (Mar. 1415) were Pat Schill and her friend Don Williams (both of Fort Qu’Appelle) who visited with friends and family in the area and they also attended the Steak Night Saturday night and Sunday breakfast at the rink.

Sunday breakfast on Mar. 15 had Kitchen Group # 4 serving up 36 breakfasts – Way to go Guys and Gals, another successful morning. It’s so nice to see all the familiar faces returning back each week as well as new ones from both near and far. We definitely appreciate your continued support – Please Come again. Do take note that there are only two more Breakfasts left – counting this coming Sunday, Mar. 22 which will see Kitchen Group # 1 back at the helm for the last time this year. See you at the rink.

I was very sad this past week – no curling to watch on television.

Well I should say no new curling games. But I can understand, sure wouldn’t want anyone getting sick, always best to be safe than sorry.

There sure are a lot of changes happening now, so do check on any event you may be thinking of attending to make sure it is still a go. And if you do attend something please take caution, use common sense and be safe.

Hubby was a-okay as he was able to participate in another radio contests – isolated to the basement. Lol. Please do take care and use common sense against this Coronavirus, which is now here among us somewhere.

Correction from last week: The passing of Margaret Mabel La Rose, she was the wife of Delbert La Rose of Lanigan. Sorry for the error.

Wawota has two competitive Curling teams with local skips, Madison Wilson and Hanna Johnson. Due to recent playoffs they have both advanced to the provincial finals. They will be in Saskatoon on March 26 to 29. Good luck to both teams.

The Scott family gathered in Orlando, Florida recently and enjoyed a family reunion.

Siblings, Myrna, Dianne. Linda (and Bob) Birnie, Sandra (and Gordon) Murray and Leon Scott. The occasion was the wedding of Leon’s daughter, Kristen’s wed-

ding to Griffin. They spent a week at St. Pete Beach while there.

Dennis and Vicki Beauchesne have returned home after spending several months in Sun City, Arizona.

Way to go Saskatchewan - Telemiracle 2020 raised $5,523472. This wasn’t a record but still a large amount considering the economic status of this area. People who want to give can always find a way.

The Wawota United Church held their 24th annual Time and Talent last Sunday. This gives the community and surrounding areas a chance to enjoy a roast beef meal and support the church by contributing or buying items. Although attendance was

down, perhaps due to other events, the weather and the Coronavirus those who were there enjoyed the meal, the bidding and the musical entertainment.

So many books, so little time. Some authors never disappoint.

Louise Penny is one of those authors that you can always count on to deliver a good mystery.

She is a Canadian author who lives in Three Pines, Quebec. Her stories are centered around this town with fictitious characters. The main character is Chief Inspector, Armand Gamache who in “The Better Man” deals with raising flood waters and a missing daughter. For a good read give Louise Penny a try.

The wearing of the Green is soon upon us – so do beware of the Ides of March. Hope you had a Happy St. Patrick’s Day on Tuesday, Mar. 17.

Unity on the right started here

By Murray Mandryk Consider what’s going on all through Canada, and North America: Conservatives are finding themselves uniting under big tents while those on the left are most squabbling and setting up their own tiny encampments.

This right-wing solidarity started 23 years ago right here in Saskatchewan.

Of course, some might dispute the notion that the 1997 formation of the Sask. Party via the merger of four Liberal and four Progressive Conservative MLAs was the catalyst for this North America-wide trend. Certainly, there’s little evidence that what happened locally had any impact on the monster that is U.S. politics.

There again, when Saskatchewan elected North America’s first social democratic government in 1944, arguably, this province’s previous claim to political fame, no one thought its promise of free health care paid for by government would change the nature of Canada and even have such a profound effect on U.S. political debate for decades to come.

Could it be that what we are now seeing all over the placed was cooked up the incubator that is Saskatchewan politics?

The thought crosses one’s mind with the news the right-wing Wexit movement, those wanting to remove Saskatchewan and Alberta from confederation, has just received party status. That means that Wexit will now be allowed to run candidates in the (possibly, sooner-than-expected) next provincial election.

Combined with another recent development that sees the old Saskatchewan Progressive Conservative party gaining support from members of the Maxime Bernier’s federal People’s Party of Canada and we are suddenly looking at political spectrum becoming rather crowded at the far right end.

One might think that Premier Scott Moe would be a little concerned about a party promoting separatism … especially, since Wexit’s existence is surely driven by the same western alienation sentiments that Moe has said are real and common among many of his supporters.

It makes the Saskatchewan Premier’s comment that it’s “not my job to worry about them” all that much more perculiar.

There again, why would the Sask. Party leader really be worried about Wexit or the PCs? With a penchant of winning its rural seats by 75 to 80 per cent of the vote (and one presumes both Wexit and the PCs will have their most success in rural seats), the Sask. Party probably isn’t worried about losing a few votes here and there.

Consider the last Saskatchewan general election in 2016, when the PCs received 5,571 votes throughout the province (1.28 per cent) while the Western Independence Party received a whopping total of 318 votes (0.07 per cent).

By comparison, Sask. Party votes in 2016 totalled 270,776 votes, or 62.36 per cent of all votes cast in this province. That’s the second highest percentage ever in Saskatchewan election history. The only time a governing party registered a higher percentage was in 2011 by the Sask. Party.

This is the end result of years of single-minded dedication to defeat the NDP. It’s a goal so engrained on Saskatchewan’s political right that the vast majority of them, don’t much fuss over ideological differences on even critical social issues. The focus is simply not just defeating the NDP but ensuring that the NDP never forms government again.

After years of unrest on the federal scene that saw the old Reform Party and Progressive Conservatives merge into the Canadian Alliance, we are seeing the same single-mindedness in the Conservative Party of Canada. Not even Bernier’s PPC that took a far more libertarian view on things like marketing boards had much impact.

Similarly, most American Republicans can’t justify Donald Trump’s indiscretions or questionable policies like tariffs or government subsidizing farms and businesses.

But like conservatives in Saskatchewan, they clearly know what they don’t want.

It’s an approach that started here more than two decades ago.

Why do I keep buying green jelly beans?

They get purchased twice a year. At Easter it’s a pastel-colored, multi-flavored package and at Christmas it’s the green and red tubs.

I don’t take note of when the spring pack gets finished off but I do know when the Christmas ones get eaten up. Never. At least not the green ones.

Billions of jelly beans get consumed each year. At Easter alone we will eat enough to circle the Earth Shelley Luedtke more than three times. While cherry and strawberry remain perennial favorites, their market share has been impacted by the popularity of savory flavors like buttered popcorn and cinnamon, not to mention ones created for the more adventurous amongst us like ear wax, pepper or dare I say it…vomit. Yes, there are cringe-worthy videos you can watch of people challenging each other to eat those without gagging.

I brought a container of leftover jelly beans to work; a smattering of red and a whole lot of green. I put the container by the coffee maker hoping people would eat them up while waiting for their mug to fill. It’s now the middle of March and the green ones are still there.

I wonder if sometimes we treat issues and challenges like a dish of jelly beans. We root through and pick out what we want and leave behind what we find less appealing or perhaps distasteful. For example, even though it’s important to learn the truth about the current status of the world health situation, too many are grabbing at misinformation that best fits their mindset. The truth is like my green jelly beans. It gets left behind in favor of more sensational reaction.

But as we root through and find what we want, we would do well to think of what…or who…might end up getting left behind.

The COVID-19 situation changes rapidly but there are monumental efforts being undertaken to contain it. We all have an important role to play in that. Yet every minute

of every day 21 children are dying of malnutrition and preventable disease. Before I fall asleep tonight tens of thousands more, under the age of 5, will pass away because they lack food or an inoculation. We have yet to see the kind of massive effort that could change the situation if we really wanted to. It’s not easy to think about. So we root around and deal with other situations and leave the rest behind.

But here’s the thing. Those children who will die by the time we finish a cup of coffee are as precious and should be valued as highly as the ones getting tucked into warm beds with full tummies tonight. Just as the millions who get sick with influenza each year need care and concern, and mobilization of resources needed to restore health.

Or consider those thinking they could buy up and hoard products to re-sell at inflated prices. We shake our heads at such selfishness and the predatory nature of those lying in wait, but we might do well to recognize the over abundant nature of what most of us have at our fingertips.

We may not be hoarding, but isn’t it likely we all have more than we need? So much, in fact, that we get rather picky. What we have in our houses right now puts us in better stead for any type of crisis, in comparison to those who are unable to meet even basic needs on any given day. Consider how much we could share if we were willing to give up just a little bit; not what we don’t want anymore, but our best. As we wait to see what the next 24-hours bring, we have already demonstrated that a difficult situation can bring out the best in us. By paying attention to all the variables and people impacted by our actions, we can better ensure that fewer get left behind. It’s all about taking care of each other; no matter the situation. So keep washing your hands, and keep reaching out in safe ways, not just today and tomorrow, but in the weeks and months to come, here and around the world. Our best resource is each other. I’m going to go wash my hands again, grab a coffee, and better appreciate those green jelly beans.

GREEN LIVING The environmental impact of fast fashion The inexpensive, rapidly produced clothing sold by large retail chains that’s often referred to as fast fashion carries a steep environmental cost. Here’s what you should know about it.

Water stress and pollution The fashion industry uses a lot of water. The water footprint of a single cotton shirt, which is the total amount of water needed for its production, is nearly 2,500 litres.

These companies also tend to produce their clothes in countries with more relaxed environmental regulations than Canada or the Unites States. This means

they dump untreated wastewater into rivers people rely on. A full 20 per cent of worldwide water pollution is directly caused by textile treatments and dyes.

Ocean pollution Every time a garment made of a synthetic fibre like polyester, rayon or nylon is washed, it releases nearly 2,000 plastic microfibres.

These end up in the ocean, where they enter the food chain and eventually end up on our plates.

Waste accumulation In 2014, people bought 60 per cent more clothes than they did in 2000, and since we recycle only 15 per cent of our clothes, most

end up in landfills. Many of these are made of synthetic textiles, which will take over 200 years to decompose.

Greenhouse gas emissions The fashion industry accounts for 10 per cent of all global greenhouse gas emissions. Production, manufacturing and transport all factor into this. In addition, the synthetic fibres used by many brands are made from fossil fuels.

The fashion industry has a huge environmental impact. You can help mitigate this by privileging local brands and natural fibres and by buying second-hand clothing as much as possible.

HEALTH HUB How daylight saving time affects your health Changing the clock to daylight saving time (DST) is more than an inconvenience. In fact, the practice may have health implications that far outweigh its purported benefits. Here’s what you should know.

Your internal clock Your body regulates a plethora of functions thanks to your hypothalamus, a region of the brain that acts as a central clock. This clock keeps time by using cues like socialization, temperature, food intake and light, all of which change gradually throughout the year. A gradual change is manageable, but switching to DST is an abrupt shift that has a number of consequences.

Short-term effects Studies indicate that there’s an increase in heart attacks following both the fall and spring time changes. Some researchers report that there are up to 24 per cent more cases than normal the Monday following the spring switch.

In addition, emergency room visits increase following the time change. This is due to the higher incidence of automobile and workplace accidents, both of which are likely caused by the immediate cognitive ef-

fects of the time change.

Changing the clocks also has mental health consequences. A change in sleep patterns can trigger seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and exacerbate existing conditions like depression and anxiety.

Long-term effects DST causes a phenomenon called “social jetlag,” which refers to a discrepancy between our social and biological clocks. Many

studies have found associations between social jetlag and obesity, smoking, alcohol use, depression and cardiovascular symptoms.

Furthermore, research indicates that the sustained stress put on our bodies by social jetlag increases the risks of cardiovascular and endocrine problems.

While DST is a fact of life for many people, it’s possible to limit its impact by adjusting your bedtime a few days in advance.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • When you are high and intoxicated don’t be using 911 because you think you hear or see something. Sorry, I guess that advice might not be worth providing if you are high and intoxicated, because you are already being illogical. We also had kids playing with the phone, which resulted in 911 being called. As for alarms, we had a “Panic Alarm” which we did not panic about because like most, if not all alarms, they are almost always false, which was the case this time as well. Another alarm was caused by an individual testing the alarm, and the alarm company was apparently not aware of this “test”.

• As always we dealt with mental health and child welfare calls. We are not experts on mental health, however, we see more than our share.

In addition, we often feel like we are social workers, but we know we are not.

• We assisted some of our volunteer fire fighters with a call. Fortunately there were no injuries or deaths.

• A domestic dispute resulted in an individual being charged with assault with a weapon and assault. The accused was released on conditions including no contact with the victim.

• We had a truck stolen. If you want to make it more difficult for someone to steal your vehicle please don’t leave the keys in the vehicle. Hiding them does not work either, being there are only so many places to hide the keys and criminals know that.

• It sure can be tough to talk your way out of a

ticket, and rarely does it work. That said, some people have no difficulty talking their way into a ticket.

• At a previous post I stopped an individual that was not wearing their seatbelt properly.

I initially, and I say initially, chose to give them a written warning. I gathered their documentation and returned to my patrol vehicle. I then returned to the vehicle operated by the accused and began to explain to them that they were getting a warning.

This individual then chose to tell me where to go and how to get there.

I politely told them I will be back momentarily and returned and quickly printed off a ticket for not wearing a seat belt properly. The accused then told me where to go and how to get there, however, added hand gestures an a frothy mouth and attempted to explain that I could not change my mind and

that it was against the law to do so. I confirmed to the individual that I could change my mind.

They then promised me that we would meet in court.

• As promised, several months later we met in court. I gave my evidence as to what I observed being that was what the trial was about, and then that I issued a ticket to the accused.

I did not wish to cause any unnecessary embarrassment and did not refer to the vulgarity utilized. The accused then had the opportunity to question me. They asked if I initially came to the window of their vehicle and began to serve a warning. I replied that is correct and the accused then cut me off.

The accused then began to explain to the Judge that I changed my mind because I had a power trip and that the charge should be dismissed. I then asked the Judge permission to expand on the events and the Judge agreed. I wish I could have recorded the look on the Judge’s face.

The accused then took the opportunity to take the stand and give their side of the story and said

they never forget to wear their seatbelt and when they do the vehicle sets off an alarm to remind them to put it on. The Judge convicted the accused and even stated words to the effect they had never seen a better example of someone talking their way into a ticket.

• If you live in a glass house you should not throw rocks. Actually, you should not throw rocks at any residence or building because windows break easily. We had a building receive a broken window when someone threw a rock at it, however, we have no clues or suspects.

• Wasn’t that a party? EMS was called to residence where there was a bunch of intoxicated individuals. They wisely requested the assistance of the RCMP who, upon arrival, were met by individuals unhappy with the Police being there. “We don’t want the Police and never called the Police, we called the ambulance”. One individual was transported to the hospital and a Member got to ride in the back of the ambulance to assist EMS due to their

level of intoxication and their lack of co-operation. Members were dispatched three more times that evening to the same residence or the area of the residence.

On the second occasion things calmed down before the arrival of the Police. On the third trip there that evening one individual was arrested and charged for failing to comply with their release conditions. On the fourth occasion patrols were made, however, no arrests and no real issues discovered. The following day EMS was called again and as they had done the day before, they requested the assistance of the RCMP. Upon arrival the Members were again told they were not wanted, however, being they were there could they remove one individual, which was accomplished and they were lodged until they were sober. EMS did transport another individual who was cooperative and did not need the Police to ensure they co-operated.

From Page 6 - RCMP report • The lesson here is we work often and well with our fellow first responders, be it EMS or Fire. If it could get contentious they will call the Police and we will gladly help. It should also be noted we often go to places where we are not wanted. In reality most of what we do results in individuals not wanting to see us or deal with us.

Thus telling us we are not wanted will not hurt our feelings.

• We have been dealing more often with what we refer to as “Keyboard Warriors”.

These individuals often utilize “Social Media” to insult, pick on and demean others. Generally we tell people to block the “Keyboard Warrior” and/or ignore them and if possible, we generally tell the “Keyboard Warrior” to grow up and/or smarten up.

If the communication continues we can, and have, charged people for harassing communications.

• Owners of a dog were issued tickets being their dog was loose and chased someone.

This was not the first time and some times we have to charge people in an effort to change behaviour.

• If you are intoxicated don’t be surprised to find that you may not be welcome in a busi-

ness. One such individual was found intoxicated in a business and they were arrested and lodged and released with a ticket for public intoxication.

• An impaired driver was located and they were arrested and subsequently provided two samples of their breath with results being 120 mg%. The vehicle was seized for 30 days and the driver loses their licence immediately.

• An individual was arrested for trafficking drugs after Members seized several grams of crack and cocaine as well as several cell phones, prepaid cards and cash.

The vehicle was also seized and the accused will have to try and prove it was not garnered as a result of crime and not being used during a crime. It was a good day for the Police and a bad day for this individual.

• An off duty Member observed two individuals racing on a residential street. Both were provided warnings and we truly believe they will not be attracting the attention of the Police in the future. There are others though that are like magnets. Of course if they wore their seatbelts, stopped for stop signs or chose not to speed they would not attract our attention.

• Members issued

• Tickets were issued for public intoxication -$200, fail to stop - $230, seatbelt - $175, no drivers licence -$150, dog running at large $100, dog chasing an individual -$100, cell phone -$580, use plates on wrong vehicle - $175, fail to produce registration - $100, fail to properly secure licence plate - $100, fail to signal -$150, fail to produce a drivers licence - $100, and most expensive speeding tickets were for $290 in a school zone and $300 and $538 for regular speeding.

• Warnings were issued for fail to stop, cell phone use, fail to wear a seatbelt, obstructed licence plate, fail to produce drivers licence, fail to produce registration, fail to display registration permit, fail to properly secure licence plates, inadequate headlamps, display defaced or altered licence plate, inadequate windshield, obstructed licence plate, trailer light fail to emit red light, careless driving, inadequate tail lights, and speeding.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate day time running lights, window tint, properly mount licence plate and inadequate windshield.

On Tuesday, March 10, Tarin Nahachewsky, Surface Land Rep. with Tundra Oil and Gas presented Bryce Birch, Principal of Redvers School, with a $25,000 donation towards the Redvers School gym floor project. Wawota Skating Club presents ‘Music Through The Decades’

By Martin Jewell Kipling Citizen Wawota Skating Club held its sixth annual carnival this past Friday. The theme was “Music Through the Decades.” Skaters danced to music ranging from The Beatles to The Spice Girls. Guest skaters also performed including Rory Greenbank and the Southeast FireCracker - Synchronized Skating Team from Kennedy.

The Skaters showed off what they had learned this season with impressive performances from the CanSkaters (whose numbers grew to 35 this year) and the 9 StarSkaters (8 of which attended competitions in Virden, MB and Yorkton).

This year the club debuted Team Sparkle, a beginner Synchronized Skating Team, with 11 skaters from the club, they are hoping to expand that to two teams in the near future.

The season has ended on a high note, and the team is looking to the future.

In addition to the residents, those taking part included: Roy Bortolotto, Mary Lou Sweeting, Verla Smith, Mary Braun, Alma Friesen, Helen Johnson and Charlotte Kovach. The service centered on the women of Zimbabwe. How fortunate we in Canada are.

Other visitors this week included: Kevin Kay, Wawota: Kathleen Malin, Redvers; Brenda Penner, Sinclair; Rhonda Ross, Redvers; and Fran Fitzpatrick, Glen Ewen.

The proceeds from Bingo at the Villa will go to Telemiracle. Friday morning we gathered to wrap coins to be taken to the bank. Thank you to Doris Erickson for all the Card Bingos she has called; and to Heather Ludium and her helpers for regular Bingo games.

On Saturday afternoon Pastor Alex Bojorque brought us the Millar Bible School choir from Pambrun, south of Swift Current. This was where he, a Mexican, and Amber, from Wisconson met. Four young men in white shirts and bow ties, and four young women sang, with sisters on the piano. I sat where I could watch the talented young woman directing them. Many of us enjoyed talking with them later.

By Linda Wegner Even though I do my best to stay away from current news items in these weekly articles, who can escape the reality of the corona virus pandemic? My thoughts, as I sit and type these words, hark back to my decades of legalistic training. Although I had a solid theological understanding of the grace of God there sometimes was a stronger sense of duty that often edged out the enjoyment that I’d found in Him. Here’s how it played out this past week.

I often found myself reciting the apostle

Paul’s words to Timothy: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) “See,” I’d tell myself, “You don’t have to be frightened because God can protect you and your family and even if you do get sick, He’s still there for you.” Sounds good, but those words didn’t quell the unrest that rattled my emotions. His gifts of power, love and a sound mind weren’t resonating with me.

Finding it hard to sleep sometimes, I added condemnation to my emotions.

“You’re supposed to be trusting

the Lord,” I’d reprimand myself, then doze off for a mere hour or so of restless sleep.

But why dump all these thoughts into what I try hard to make an upbeat and positive offering? It was the realization that Paul’s words were not “orders’ but a beautiful “offer” to enjoy God’s peace and a sense of power over unwelcome circumstances.

A sound mind? His wise exhortation to wash our hands thoroughly, use sanitizer and follow directions given by those in leadership, all part of wisdom.

Wawota Time and Talent Auction raises spirits

By Kelly Johnson The Observer On Sunday, March 15 Wawota United Church held it’s 24th Annual Time and Talent Supper Auction and Entertainment at the Wawota Town Hall.

The evening of fun and entertainment drew a good crowd, despite worries over attendance due to the current health concerns of Covid 19, as well as a forecast of a spring snowstorm for the area.

Linda Bernie, who is the treasurer was sympathetic to the situation and was not anticipating a huge turnout, she did not expect “as big a crowd as usual’ concerning her was that “there was a little bit of fear out there.”

The fundraiser usually attracting between 150 to 175 people and raising on previous occasions amounts of six to nine thousand dollars still proved to be a success.

Organizing the fundraiser was Shirley Corkish, Myrna Olson, Rhonda Dorrance, Betty Wyatt, Wendy Brehaut, Sandra Murray and Linda Birnie.

On silent auction again this year was another sour cream and raison pie, in whick last year’s auction it brought a winning bid of $60.00.

Auction items up for bid were donated by members of the church and community and local businesses.

GoFundMe campaign to help Riley Raynard’s racing

By David Willbert Estevan Mercury A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support Lampman’s Riley Raynard and his efforts to continue racing in hobby stocks.

The campaign was started by Angela Prette on March 5, and has a goal of $20,000.

As of the afternoon of March 10, it has raised $1,510.

Raynard has been racing hobby stocks at the Estevan Motor Speedway and elsewhere since the 2012 season, even though he was born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

“Most people around Estevan know who Riley Raynard is,” Prette wrote in her campaign. “If you don’t know, he’s been racing professionally for eight

years in an IMCA hobby stock while battling muscular dystrophy.

Not just racing, but consistently winning too!”

She went on to say that muscular dystrophy has been deteriorating his muscles since he was four years old.

He has been in a wheelchair full time since he was 13, so driving a race car has been a little different for Raynard.

“He was using his hands for the brake and then kept his foot on the pedal for the gas but would have to push down on his leg to get it to go. But he can no longer operate this way ... he needs to implement full hand controls,” she wrote.

“After a lot of research Riley and his family have found a place to get this done but it is quite expen-

sive. If you can help in any way, it would mean the world to them.”

Racing is Riley’s dream, she said, as it helps him to escape from everything.

Since he started racing, Raynard has won numerous races and awards, not just locally but abroad, including the prestigious Ken Schrader Real Racer Award in 2014 for his love and commitment to auto racing.

He and other drivers have also supported the Laps for Muscular Dystrophy campaign, in which they donate $1 to muscular dystrophy research for each lap led.

In a post on its Facebook page, Raynard Racing thanked Prette for setting up the GoFundMe campaign, and everyone who has donated to him so far.

The Covid 19 effect on agriculture

By Calvin Daniels If there has ever been any doubt that the marketplace for agriculture products can change overnight it has certainly been reaďŹƒrmed over the last week or 10 days.

On March 11, the FCC Young Farmer Summit was held in Yorkton, where Craig Klemmer, Principal Agricultural Economist at Farm Credit Canada, gave some insights into what he saw in terms of the ag markets, which he admitted were volatile based on a number of factors.

That day COVID-19 was of course on the minds of people, the event host suggesting people not shake hands as a precaution.

Klemmer too, of course mentioned that the World Health Organization had just labelled COVID-19 a pandemic. He also noted how the National Basketball Association was talking about the potential of playing games in empty arenas as a safety measure.

Within hours the impact Klemmer might have imagined were about as out-dated as the horse-

drawn plow.

The NBA had put its season on hold, which was followed quickly by the National Hockey League and virtually every other professional sport in Canada and the United States.

Then came junior and minor hockey seasons shut down for the season in Canada.

And, around the world most sport venues had turned o their lights in the face of concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

Sports of course are just a very visible example of the eorts being made to curb the spread of the disease. Travel has been restricted, schools closed, larger gatherings banned, bars and theatres told to close, all moves from various jurisdictions in response to the continued spread.

How will this all play out for agriculture?

That is yet to be determined for these are quite clearly unprecedented circumstances, but it will mean volatility.

Pandemic reaches rural Saskatchewan Saskatchewan has now become part of the global pandemic as two people in Saskatoon have now tested positive for the Covid 19 Virus. At the time this is being written (Mar. 14, 2020) there are 224 confirmed cases in Canada.

Already the virus has had an effect on people in rural Saskatchewan. Initially the virus had not been confirmed in the province of Saskatchewan, the first news concerning this area was that there were two couples from Alameda that were placed in quarantine at a military base in Trenton Ontario. They had been on a cruise ship where people had been tested positive and were as a precautionary measure put in isolation for a period of 14 days. You need to inquire about being tested if you are showing symtoms.

The virus has now spread to more than 100 countries, some affected more severely than others.

As the virus spreads many lives have been lost and people have seen normal everyday activities being modified.

All major sports leagues have seen their seasons suspended, including all NHL teams, as well as the Toronto Raptors of the NBA. The Masters Golf Tournament was cancelled, as well as all concerts.

In Saskatchewan no events are allowed where there are more than 50 people in attendance.

The Western Canada Junior Hockey League has suspended the season and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League as well suspended the season which now has been cancelled all together.

The Saskatchewan Hockey Association has suspended all Provincial Playoffs and stopped all Minor Hockey play for the season as well.

Most importantly people should be well aware of the directive from the Provincial Government.

The situation is changing from minute to minute and people should take instructions and precautions as advised by local medical professionals and the Saskatchewan Health Association.

All Canadians citizens and those living in Canada that may be traveling abroad are recommended to come home immediately; as the situation develops all international travel may be stopped at any

Being well informed and adhering the precautions outlined by the SHA and the Provincial Government and most importantly, local Medical Professionals (doctors, nurses, pharmacists), for they are the ones that know the situation locally and that will do the most in keeping everyone safe.

This is a situation where it may seem that people are being overly cautious but it is much easier to be too cautious than to look back and say if only we would have been careful at the start. Remember everyone else’s health can be affected by each of our actions.

There were approximately 100 quests (including family and friends) who attended the friendship luncheon at Alida Hall that followed the funeral mass at Cantal for Regina Cruywels on Saturday, Mar. 14.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan spent the weekend (March 14-15) in Weyburn where Ainsley was participating in a dance competition with her dance group from Redvers. After their first dance on Saturday the group got first place. Then on Sunday after their second performance they received a 2 – another good score – way to go girls.

Congratulations to the group and their instructors.

On Mar. 14 the Alida Rec. Board held their annual fundraiser at the Alida Rink. This year the event they hosted was a Steak Supper & Games Night. A very delicious Steak supper was served to and appreciated by the 70 people in attendance. Special acknowledgement and recognition goes out to the Prairie Pride Credit Union staff members who so graciously cooked the steaks to perfection and also to those who helped with the serving and clean-up. Following supper “Minute to Win It” games began when the first eight guests were drawn and called up to participate in their game before the next group was called. The following 12 games were played and the winner of each was recognized.

All the winners of these 12 games then moved on to participate in the next round of the “Ping Tac Toe” game which then would result with 6 winners (Kris Potapinski, Paul Coombes, Jesse Germain, Steven Bendtsen, Lil Patton and Lesa Bendtsen) who would participate in the next game of “Spin the Doctor”. Following this game the 3 winners (Lil Patton, Steven Bendtsen and Kris Potapinski) proceeded to the final game of “Up Hill Battle”. The result of this game was that Steven Bendtsen came out as the winner – he had his choice of any one of the raffle prizes. He chose the Light Bar donated

by Alida Farm and Auto.

The rest of the raffle prizes were then drawn bringing the evening to a close. The Alida Rec. Board once again appreciates the continued support that they receive with their fundraising events – whether it be with prize donations, attendances and participants, or volunteer helpers and workers. It was once again another successful event for them.

Carrie Sauer, Regina visited over the weekend (Mar. 14-15) with her daughter, Melissa and Kris Potapinski and babysat grandson Carson while his parents attended the Steak Night at Alida Rink Saturday

night.

Visitors down for the weekend (Mar. 1415) were Pat Schill and her friend Don Williams (both of Fort Qu’Appelle) who visited with friends and family in the area and they also attended the Steak Night Saturday night and Sunday breakfast at the rink.

Sunday breakfast on Mar. 15 had Kitchen Group # 4 serving up 36 breakfasts – Way to go Guys and Gals, another successful morning. It’s so nice to see all the familiar faces returning back each week as well as new ones from both near and far. We definitely appreciate your continued support – Please Come again. Do take note that there are only two more Breakfasts left – counting this coming Sunday, Mar. 22 which will see Kitchen Group # 1 back at the helm for the last time this year. See you at the rink.

I was very sad this past week – no curling to watch on television.

Well I should say no new curling games. But I can understand, sure wouldn’t want anyone getting sick, always best to be safe than sorry.

There sure are a lot of changes happening now, so do check on any event you may be thinking of attending to make sure it is still a go. And if you do attend something please take caution, use common sense and be safe.

Hubby was a-okay as he was able to participate in another radio contests – isolated to the basement. Lol. Please do take care and use common sense against this Coronavirus, which is now here among us somewhere.

Wawota has two competitive Curling teams with local skips, Madison Wilson and Hanna Johnson. Due to recent playoffs they have both advanced to the provincial finals. They will be in Saskatoon on March 26 to 29. Good luck to both teams.

The Scott family gathered in Orlando, Florida recently and enjoyed a family reunion.

Siblings, Myrna, Dianne. Linda (and Bob) Birnie, Sandra (and Gordon) Murray and Leon Scott. The occasion was the wedding of Leon’s daughter, Kristen’s wed-

ding to Griffin. They spent a week at St. Pete Beach while there.

Dennis and Vicki Beauchesne have returned home after spending several months in Sun City, Arizona.

Way to go Saskatchewan - Telemiracle 2020 raised $5,523472. This wasn’t a record but still a large amount considering the economic status of this area. People who want to give can always find a way.

The Wawota United Church held their 24th annual Time and Talent last Sunday. This gives the community and surrounding areas a chance to enjoy a roast beef meal and support the church by contributing or buying items. Although attendance was

down, perhaps due to other events, the weather and the Coronavirus those who were there enjoyed the meal, the bidding and the musical entertainment.

So many books, so little time. Some authors never disappoint.

Louise Penny is one of those authors that you can always count on to deliver a good mystery.

She is a Canadian author who lives in Three Pines, Quebec. Her stories are centered around this town with fictitious characters. The main character is Chief Inspector, Armand Gamache who in “The Better Man” deals with raising flood waters and a missing daughter. For a good read give Louise Penny a try.

The wearing of the Green is soon upon us – so do beware of the Ides of March. Hope you had a Happy St. Patrick’s Day on Tuesday, Mar. 17.

Unity on the right started here

By Murray Mandryk Consider what’s going on all through Canada, and North America: Conservatives are finding themselves uniting under big tents while those on the left are most squabbling and setting up their own tiny encampments.

This right-wing solidarity started 23 years ago right here in Saskatchewan.

Of course, some might dispute the notion that the 1997 formation of the Sask. Party via the merger of four Liberal and four Progressive Conservative MLAs was the catalyst for this North America-wide trend. Certainly, there’s little evidence that what happened locally had any impact on the monster that is U.S. politics.

There again, when Saskatchewan elected North America’s first social democratic government in 1944, arguably, this province’s previous claim to political fame, no one thought its promise of free health care paid for by government would change the nature of Canada and even have such a profound effect on U.S. political debate for decades to come.

Could it be that what we are now seeing all over the placed was cooked up the incubator that is Saskatchewan politics?

The thought crosses one’s mind with the news the right-wing Wexit movement, those wanting to remove Saskatchewan and Alberta from confederation, has just received party status. That means that Wexit will now be allowed to run candidates in the (possibly, sooner-than-expected) next provincial election.

Combined with another recent development that sees the old Saskatchewan Progressive Conservative party gaining support from members of the Maxime Bernier’s federal People’s Party of Canada and we are suddenly looking at political spectrum becoming rather crowded at the far right end.

One might think that Premier Scott Moe would be a little concerned about a party promoting separatism … especially, since Wexit’s existence is surely driven by the same western alienation sentiments that Moe has said are real and common among many of his supporters.

It makes the Saskatchewan Premier’s comment that it’s “not my job to worry about them” all that much more perculiar.

There again, why would the Sask. Party leader really be worried about Wexit or the PCs? With a penchant of winning its rural seats by 75 to 80 per cent of the vote (and one presumes both Wexit and the PCs will have their most success in rural seats), the Sask. Party probably isn’t worried about losing a few votes here and there.

Consider the last Saskatchewan general election in 2016, when the PCs received 5,571 votes throughout the province (1.28 per cent) while the Western Independence Party received a whopping total of 318 votes (0.07 per cent).

By comparison, Sask. Party votes in 2016 totalled 270,776 votes, or 62.36 per cent of all votes cast in this province. That’s the second highest percentage ever in Saskatchewan election history. The only time a governing party registered a higher percentage was in 2011 by the Sask. Party.

This is the end result of years of single-minded dedication to defeat the NDP. It’s a goal so engrained on Saskatchewan’s political right that the vast majority of them, don’t much fuss over ideological differences on even critical social issues. The focus is simply not just defeating the NDP but ensuring that the NDP never forms government again.

After years of unrest on the federal scene that saw the old Reform Party and Progressive Conservatives merge into the Canadian Alliance, we are seeing the same single-mindedness in the Conservative Party of Canada. Not even Bernier’s PPC that took a far more libertarian view on things like marketing boards had much impact.

Similarly, most American Republicans can’t justify Donald Trump’s indiscretions or questionable policies like tariffs or government subsidizing farms and businesses.

But like conservatives in Saskatchewan, they clearly know what they don’t want.

It’s an approach that started here more than two decades ago.

Why do I keep buying green jelly beans?

They get purchased twice a year. At Easter it’s a pastel-colored, multi-flavored package and at Christmas it’s the green and red tubs.

I don’t take note of when the spring pack gets finished off but I do know when the Christmas ones get eaten up. Never. At least not the green ones.

Billions of jelly beans get consumed each year. At Easter alone we will eat enough to circle the Earth Shelley Luedtke more than three times. While cherry and strawberry remain perennial favorites, their market share has been impacted by the popularity of savory flavors like buttered popcorn and cinnamon, not to mention ones created for the more adventurous amongst us like ear wax, pepper or dare I say it…vomit. Yes, there are cringe-worthy videos you can watch of people challenging each other to eat those without gagging.

I brought a container of leftover jelly beans to work; a smattering of red and a whole lot of green. I put the container by the coffee maker hoping people would eat them up while waiting for their mug to fill. It’s now the middle of March and the green ones are still there.

I wonder if sometimes we treat issues and challenges like a dish of jelly beans. We root through and pick out what we want and leave behind what we find less appealing or perhaps distasteful. For example, even though it’s important to learn the truth about the current status of the world health situation, too many are grabbing at misinformation that best fits their mindset. The truth is like my green jelly beans. It gets left behind in favor of more sensational reaction.

But as we root through and find what we want, we would do well to think of what…or who…might end up getting left behind.

The COVID-19 situation changes rapidly but there are monumental efforts being undertaken to contain it. We all have an important role to play in that. Yet every minute

of every day 21 children are dying of malnutrition and preventable disease. Before I fall asleep tonight tens of thousands more, under the age of 5, will pass away because they lack food or an inoculation. We have yet to see the kind of massive effort that could change the situation if we really wanted to. It’s not easy to think about. So we root around and deal with other situations and leave the rest behind.

But here’s the thing. Those children who will die by the time we finish a cup of coffee are as precious and should be valued as highly as the ones getting tucked into warm beds with full tummies tonight. Just as the millions who get sick with influenza each year need care and concern, and mobilization of resources needed to restore health.

Or consider those thinking they could buy up and hoard products to re-sell at inflated prices. We shake our heads at such selfishness and the predatory nature of those lying in wait, but we might do well to recognize the over abundant nature of what most of us have at our fingertips.

We may not be hoarding, but isn’t it likely we all have more than we need? So much, in fact, that we get rather picky. What we have in our houses right now puts us in better stead for any type of crisis, in comparison to those who are unable to meet even basic needs on any given day. Consider how much we could share if we were willing to give up just a little bit; not what we don’t want anymore, but our best. Not what gets left at the bottom of the dish, but what sits at the top.

As we wait to see what the next 24-hours bring, we have already demonstrated that a difficult situation can bring out the best in us. By paying attention to all the variables and people impacted by our actions, we can better ensure that fewer get left behind. It’s all about taking care of each other; no matter the situation. So keep washing your hands, and keep reaching out in safe ways, not just today and tomorrow, but in the weeks and months to come, here and around the world. Our best resource is each other. I’m going to go wash my hands again, grab a coffee, and better appreciate those green jelly beans.

That’s my outlook.

GREEN LIVING The environmental impact of fast fashion The inexpensive, rapidly produced clothing sold by large retail chains that’s often referred to as fast fashion carries a steep environmental cost. Here’s what you should know about it.

Water stress and pollution The fashion industry uses a lot of water. The water footprint of a single cotton shirt, which is the total amount of water needed for its production, is nearly 2,500 litres.

These companies also tend to produce their clothes in countries with more relaxed environmental regulations than Canada or the Unites States. This means

they dump untreated wastewater into rivers people rely on. A full 20 per cent of worldwide water pollution is directly caused by textile treatments and dyes.

Ocean pollution Every time a garment made of a synthetic fibre like polyester, rayon or nylon is washed, it releases nearly 2,000 plastic microfibres.

These end up in the ocean, where they enter the food chain and eventually end up on our plates.

Waste accumulation In 2014, people bought 60 per cent more clothes than they did in 2000, and since we recycle only 15 per cent of our clothes, most

end up in landfills. Many of these are made of synthetic textiles, which will take over 200 years to decompose.

Greenhouse gas emissions The fashion industry accounts for 10 per cent of all global greenhouse gas emissions. Production, manufacturing and transport all factor into this. In addition, the synthetic fibres used by many brands are made from fossil fuels.

The fashion industry has a huge environmental impact. You can help mitigate this by privileging local brands and natural fibres and by buying second-hand clothing as much as possible.

HEALTH HUB How daylight saving time affects your health Changing the clock to daylight saving time (DST) is more than an inconvenience. In fact, the practice may have health implications that far outweigh its purported benefits. Here’s what you should know.

Your internal clock Your body regulates a plethora of functions thanks to your hypothalamus, a region of the brain that acts as a central clock. This clock keeps time by using cues like socialization, temperature, food intake and light, all of which change gradually throughout the year. A gradual change is manageable, but switching to DST is an abrupt shift that has a number of consequences.

Short-term effects Studies indicate that there’s an increase in heart attacks following both the fall and spring time changes. Some researchers report that there are up to 24 per cent more cases than normal the Monday following the spring switch.

In addition, emergency room visits increase following the time change. This is due to the higher incidence of automobile and workplace accidents, both of which are likely caused by the immediate cognitive ef-

fects of the time change.

Changing the clocks also has mental health consequences. A change in sleep patterns can trigger seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and exacerbate existing conditions like depression and anxiety.

Long-term effects DST causes a phenomenon called “social jetlag,” which refers to a discrepancy between our social and biological clocks. Many

studies have found associations between social jetlag and obesity, smoking, alcohol use, depression and cardiovascular symptoms.

Furthermore, research indicates that the sustained stress put on our bodies by social jetlag increases the risks of cardiovascular and endocrine problems.

While DST is a fact of life for many people, it’s possible to limit its impact by adjusting your bedtime a few days in advance.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • When you are high and intoxicated don’t be using 911 because you think you hear or see something. Sorry, I guess that advice might not be worth providing if you are high and intoxicated, because you are already being illogical. We also had kids playing with the phone, which resulted in 911 being called. As for alarms, we had a “Panic Alarm” which we did not panic about because like most, if not all alarms, they are almost always false, which was the case this time as well. Another alarm was caused by an individual testing the alarm, and the alarm company was apparently not aware of this “test”.

• As always we dealt with mental health and child welfare calls. We are not experts on mental health, however, we see more than our share.

In addition, we often feel like we are social workers, but we know we are not.

• We assisted some of our volunteer fire fighters with a call. Fortunately there were no injuries or deaths.

• A domestic dispute resulted in an individual being charged with assault with a weapon and assault. The accused was released on conditions including no contact with the victim.

• We had a truck stolen. If you want to make it more difficult for someone to steal your vehicle please don’t leave the keys in the vehicle. Hiding them does not work either, being there are only so many places to hide the keys and criminals know that.

• It sure can be tough to talk your way out of a

ticket, and rarely does it work. That said, some people have no difficulty talking their way into a ticket.

• At a previous post I stopped an individual that was not wearing their seatbelt properly.

I initially, and I say initially, chose to give them a written warning. I gathered their documentation and returned to my patrol vehicle. I then returned to the vehicle operated by the accused and began to explain to them that they were getting a warning.

This individual then chose to tell me where to go and how to get there.

I politely told them I will be back momentarily and returned and quickly printed off a ticket for not wearing a seat belt properly. The accused then told me where to go and how to get there, however, added hand gestures an a frothy mouth and attempted to explain that I could not change my mind and

that it was against the law to do so. I confirmed to the individual that I could change my mind.

They then promised me that we would meet in court.

• As promised, several months later we met in court. I gave my evidence as to what I observed being that was what the trial was about, and then that I issued a ticket to the accused.

I did not wish to cause any unnecessary embarrassment and did not refer to the vulgarity utilized. The accused then had the opportunity to question me. They asked if I initially came to the window of their vehicle and began to serve a warning. I replied that is correct and the accused then cut me off.

The accused then began to explain to the Judge that I changed my mind because I had a power trip and that the charge should be dismissed. I then asked the Judge permission to expand on the events and the Judge agreed. I wish I could have recorded the look on the Judge’s face.

The accused then took the opportunity to take the stand and give their side of the story and said

they never forget to wear their seatbelt and when they do the vehicle sets off an alarm to remind them to put it on. The Judge convicted the accused and even stated words to the effect they had never seen a better example of someone talking their way into a ticket.

• If you live in a glass house you should not throw rocks. Actually, you should not throw rocks at any residence or building because windows break easily. We had a building receive a broken window when someone threw a rock at it, however, we have no clues or suspects.

• Wasn’t that a party? EMS was called to residence where there was a bunch of intoxicated individuals. They wisely requested the assistance of the RCMP who, upon arrival, were met by individuals unhappy with the Police being there. “We don’t want the Police and never called the Police, we called the ambulance”. One individual was transported to the hospital and a Member got to ride in the back of the ambulance to assist EMS due to their

level of intoxication and their lack of co-operation. Members were dispatched three more times that evening to the same residence or the area of the residence.

On the second occasion things calmed down before the arrival of the Police. On the third trip there that evening one individual was arrested and charged for failing to comply with their release conditions. On the fourth occasion patrols were made, however, no arrests and no real issues discovered. The following day EMS was called again and as they had done the day before, they requested the assistance of the RCMP. Upon arrival the Members were again told they were not wanted, however, being they were there could they remove one individual, which was accomplished and they were lodged until they were sober. EMS did transport another individual who was cooperative and did not need the Police to ensure they co-operated.

From Page 6 - RCMP report • The lesson here is we work often and well with our fellow first responders, be it EMS or Fire. If it could get contentious they will call the Police and we will gladly help. It should also be noted we often go to places where we are not wanted. In reality most of what we do results in individuals not wanting to see us or deal with us.

Thus telling us we are not wanted will not hurt our feelings.

• We have been dealing more often with what we refer to as “Keyboard Warriors”.

These individuals often utilize “Social Media” to insult, pick on and demean others. Generally we tell people to block the “Keyboard Warrior” and/or ignore them and if possible, we generally tell the “Keyboard Warrior” to grow up and/or smarten up.

If the communication continues we can, and have, charged people for harassing communications.

• Owners of a dog were issued tickets being their dog was loose and chased someone.

This was not the first time and some times we have to charge people in an effort to change behaviour.

• If you are intoxicated don’t be surprised to find that you may not be welcome in a busi-

ness. One such individual was found intoxicated in a business and they were arrested and lodged and released with a ticket for public intoxication.

• An impaired driver was located and they were arrested and subsequently provided two samples of their breath with results being 120 mg%. The vehicle was seized for 30 days and the driver loses their licence immediately.

• An individual was arrested for trafficking drugs after Members seized several grams of crack and cocaine as well as several cell phones, prepaid cards and cash.

The vehicle was also seized and the accused will have to try and prove it was not garnered as a result of crime and not being used during a crime. It was a good day for the Police and a bad day for this individual.

• An off duty Member observed two individuals racing on a residential street. Both were provided warnings and we truly believe they will not be attracting the attention of the Police in the future. There are others though that are like magnets. Of course if they wore their seatbelts, stopped for stop signs or chose not to speed they would not attract our attention.

• Members issued

• Tickets were issued for public intoxication -$200, fail to stop - $230, seatbelt - $175, no drivers licence -$150, dog running at large $100, dog chasing an individual -$100, cell phone -$580, use plates on wrong vehicle - $175, fail to produce registration - $100, fail to properly secure licence plate - $100, fail to signal -$150, fail to produce a drivers licence - $100, and most expensive speeding tickets were for $290 in a school zone and $300 and $538 for regular speeding.

• Warnings were issued for fail to stop, cell phone use, fail to wear a seatbelt, obstructed licence plate, fail to produce drivers licence, fail to produce registration, fail to display registration permit, fail to properly secure licence plates, inadequate headlamps, display defaced or altered licence plate, inadequate windshield, obstructed licence plate, trailer light fail to emit red light, careless driving, inadequate tail lights, and speeding.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate day time running lights, window tint, properly mount licence plate and inadequate windshield.

Wawota Skating Club presents ‘Music Through The Decades’

By Martin Jewell Kipling Citizen Wawota Skating Club held its sixth annual carnival this past Friday. The theme was “Music Through the Decades.” Skaters danced to music ranging from The Beatles to The Spice Girls. Guest skaters also performed including Rory Greenbank and the Southeast FireCracker - Synchronized Skating Team from Kennedy.

The Skaters showed off what they had learned this season with impressive performances from the CanSkaters (whose numbers grew to 35 this year) and the 9 StarSkaters (8 of which attended competitions in Virden, MB and Yorkton).

This year the club debuted Team Sparkle, a beginner Synchronized Skating Team, with 11 skaters from the club, they are hoping to expand that to two teams in the near future.

The season has ended on a high note, and the team is looking to the future.

In addition to the residents, those taking part included: Roy Bortolotto, Mary Lou Sweeting, Verla Smith, Mary Braun, Alma Friesen, Helen Johnson and Charlotte Kovach. The service centered on the women of Zimbabwe. How fortunate we in Canada are.

Other visitors this week included: Kevin Kay, Wawota: Kathleen Malin, Redvers; Brenda Penner, Sinclair; Rhonda Ross, Redvers; and Fran Fitzpatrick, Glen Ewen.

The proceeds from Bingo at the Villa will go to Telemiracle. Friday morning we gathered to wrap coins to be taken to the bank. Thank you to Doris Erickson for all the Card Bingos she has called; and to Heather Ludium and her helpers for regular Bingo games.

On Saturday afternoon Pastor Alex Bojorque brought us the Millar Bible School choir from Pambrun, south of Swift Current. This was where he, a Mexican, and Amber, from Wisconson met. Four young men in white shirts and bow ties, and four young women sang, with sisters on the piano. I sat where I could watch the talented young woman directing them. Many of us enjoyed talking with them later.

By Linda Wegner Even though I do my best to stay away from current news items in these weekly articles, who can escape the reality of the corona virus pandemic? My thoughts, as I sit and type these words, hark back to my decades of legalistic training. Although I had a solid theological understanding of the grace of God there sometimes was a stronger sense of duty that often edged out the enjoyment that I’d found in Him. Here’s how it played out this past week.

I often found myself reciting the apostle

Paul’s words to Timothy: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) “See,” I’d tell myself, “You don’t have to be frightened because God can protect you and your family and even if you do get sick, He’s still there for you.” Sounds good, but those words didn’t quell the unrest that rattled my emotions. His gifts of power, love and a sound mind weren’t resonating with me.

Finding it hard to sleep sometimes, I added condemnation to my emotions.

“You’re supposed to be trusting

the Lord,” I’d reprimand myself, then doze off for a mere hour or so of restless sleep.

But why dump all these thoughts into what I try hard to make an upbeat and positive offering? It was the realization that Paul’s words were not “orders’ but a beautiful “offer” to enjoy God’s peace and a sense of power over unwelcome circumstances.

A sound mind? His wise exhortation to wash our hands thoroughly, use sanitizer and follow directions given by those in leadership, all part of wisdom.

Wawota Time and Talent Auction raises spirits

By Kelly Johnson The Observer On Sunday, March 15 Wawota United Church held it’s 24th Annual Time and Talent Supper Auction and Entertainment at the Wawota Town Hall.

The evening of fun and entertainment drew a good crowd, despite worries over attendance due to the current health concerns of Covid 19, as well as a forecast of a spring snowstorm for the area.

Linda Bernie, who is the treasurer was sympathetic to the situation and was not anticipating a huge turnout, she did not expect “as big a crowd as usual’ concerning her was that “there was a little bit of fear out there.”

The fundraiser usually attracting between 150 to 175 people and raising on previous occasions amounts of six to nine thousand dollars still proved to be a success.

Organizing the fundraiser was Shirley Corkish, Myrna Olson, Rhonda Dorrance, Betty Wyatt, Wendy Brehaut, Sandra Murray and Linda Birnie.

The supper was tender, juicy roast beef and was prepared by the church members, which did the trick, as there were not a lot of empty seats at supper time.

There was a wide variety of items to bid on, including home-

made baking, crafts, canned garden produce and household items.

On silent auction again this year was another sour cream and raison pie, in whick last year’s auction it brought a winning bid of $60.00.

Auction items up for bid were donated by members of the church and community and local businesses.

GoFundMe campaign to help Riley Raynard’s racing

By David Willbert Estevan Mercury A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support Lampman’s Riley Raynard and his efforts to continue racing in hobby stocks.

The campaign was started by Angela Prette on March 5, and has a goal of $20,000.

As of the afternoon of March 10, it has raised $1,510.

Raynard has been racing hobby stocks at the Estevan Motor Speedway and elsewhere since the 2012 season, even though he was born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

“Most people around Estevan know who Riley Raynard is,” Prette wrote in her campaign. “If you don’t know, he’s been racing professionally for eight

years in an IMCA hobby stock while battling muscular dystrophy.

Not just racing, but consistently winning too!”

She went on to say that muscular dystrophy has been deteriorating his muscles since he was four years old.

He has been in a wheelchair full time since he was 13, so driving a race car has been a little different for Raynard.

“He was using his hands for the brake and then kept his foot on the pedal for the gas but would have to push down on his leg to get it to go. But he can no longer operate this way ... he needs to implement full hand controls,” she wrote.

“After a lot of research Riley and his family have found a place to get this done but it is quite expen-

sive. If you can help in any way, it would mean the world to them.”

Racing is Riley’s dream, she said, as it helps him to escape from everything.

Since he started racing, Raynard has won numerous races and awards, not just locally but abroad, including the prestigious Ken Schrader Real Racer Award in 2014 for his love and commitment to auto racing.

He and other drivers have also supported the Laps for Muscular Dystrophy campaign, in which they donate $1 to muscular dystrophy research for each lap led.

In a post on its Facebook page, Raynard Racing thanked Prette for setting up the GoFundMe campaign, and everyone who has donated to him so far.

The Covid 19 effect on agriculture

By Calvin Daniels If there has ever been any doubt that the marketplace for agriculture products can change overnight it has certainly been reaďŹƒrmed over the last week or 10 days.

On March 11, the FCC Young Farmer Summit was held in Yorkton, where Craig Klemmer, Principal Agricultural Economist at Farm Credit Canada, gave some insights into what he saw in terms of the ag markets, which he admitted were volatile based on a number of factors.

That day COVID-19 was of course on the minds of people, the event host suggesting people not shake hands as a precaution.

Klemmer too, of course mentioned that the World Health Organization had just labelled COVID-19 a pandemic. He also noted how the National Basketball Association was talking about the potential of playing games in empty arenas as a safety measure.

Within hours the impact Klemmer might have imagined were about as out-dated as the horse-

drawn plow.

The NBA had put its season on hold, which was followed quickly by the National Hockey League and virtually every other professional sport in Canada and the United States.

Then came junior and minor hockey seasons shut down for the season in Canada.

And, around the world most sport venues had turned o their lights in the face of concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

Sports of course are just a very visible example of the eorts being made to curb the spread of the disease. Travel has been restricted, schools closed, larger gatherings banned, bars and theatres told to close, all moves from various jurisdictions in response to the continued spread.

How will this all play out for agriculture?

That is yet to be determined for these are quite clearly unprecedented circumstances, but it will mean volatility.

Pandemic reaches rural Saskatchewan Saskatchewan has now become part of the global pandemic as two people in Saskatoon have now tested positive for the Covid 19 Virus. At the time this is being written (Mar. 14, 2020) there are 224 confirmed cases in Canada.

Already the virus has had an effect on people in rural Saskatchewan. Initially the virus had not been confirmed in the province of Saskatchewan, the first news concerning this area was that there were two couples from Alameda that were placed in quarantine at a military base in Trenton Ontario. They had been on a cruise ship where people had been tested positive and were as a precautionary measure put in isolation for a period of 14 days. You need to inquire about being tested if you are showing symtoms.

The virus has now spread to more than 100 countries, some affected more severely than others.

As the virus spreads many lives have been lost and people have seen normal everyday activities being modified.

All major sports leagues have seen their seasons suspended, including all NHL teams, as well as the Toronto Raptors of the NBA. The Masters Golf Tournament was cancelled, as well as all concerts.

In Saskatchewan no events are allowed where there are more than 50 people in attendance.

The Western Canada Junior Hockey League has suspended the season and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League as well suspended the season which now has been cancelled all together.

The Saskatchewan Hockey Association has suspended all Provincial Playoffs and stopped all Minor Hockey play for the season as well.

Most importantly people should be well aware of the directive from the Provincial Government.

The situation is changing from minute to minute and people should take instructions and precautions as advised by local medical professionals and the Saskatchewan Health Association.

All Canadians citizens and those living in Canada that may be traveling abroad are recommended to come home immediately; as the situation develops all international travel may be stopped at any
