Labour of Love: Filmmaker Dianne Ouellette honours brother Guy with “Rigger” Lynne Bell

Filmmaker and former Carlyle resident Dianne Ouellette debuted “Rigger” - a documentary honouring the life of her brother Guy, who passed away in 2009, due to a tragic workplace accident on a service rig near Kisbey.

“He was a rigger. He was a brother. And his name was Guy,” states Dianne in the film’s opening.

“But of course, he was much more than that to us. And by telling Guy’s story, it will hopefully impact somebody in the future enough, that if they feel unsafe, they will walk away,” she says. “Your job isn’t your life, and a lot of people forget that.”

Guy Ouellette was born on June 4, 1970 and passed away on Dec. 14, 2009. He lived with his wife, Cory and his children Madison and Alexander in Estevan and died on a service rig near Kisbey, 10 days before Christmas, when the rig fell.

“A couple hours work was all it was supposed to be,” says Dianne. “The temperature was about -45C with the windchill. The rig was swaying. They were being pushed by the company they were working for. Guy went up - and the derrick fell over and Guy was in it.”

“He died on the way to Weyburn hospital.

(Guy) died doing something that he wouldn’t let his men do.”

Although the film addresses the tragic circumstances of Guy’s death, it also honours the personal legacy he left behind.

The film features interviews with Guy’s wife, Cory, his daughter, Madison and his son, Alex - as well as interviews with his mother, the late Judy Feduk and his stepfather Dennis Feduk, as well as his sisters, Dianne and Alison. Many of Guy’s close friends from his days in Melville and Carlyle also appear in the film.

The loss that is felt by Guy’s family and many friends make the film a deeply personal, yet universal story of life, love and loss.

Guy’s friend Darcy Moore of Carlyle appears in the film and attended the screening.

“I think Dianne did a great job creating a film of her brother’s life,” says Moore. “I also think that myself and other interviewees made their point that Guy was great friend, a great husband and father, and there are many of us left behind missing him.

Rest in peace, my friend.”

“Life is short,” says Moore in the film. “Live a life full of life if you can.”

Dianne says that although “Rigger” has been screened in Red Deer, Regina and Yorkton - and has also been entered in several film festivals introducing the film in Carlyle was special.

“It means so much to me to screen “Rigger” here, because this is my town,” says the Regina-based filmmaker.

“But everywhere I screen it, I realize that this could be anybody’s family and that’s what I wanted to convey.” “‘Rigger” has taken 7 ½ years to make - from concept to completion,” says Dianne. “And I have so many people to thank, who walked through this journey of grief with me.” “ There is so much to say, but most of all, I made this film to honour my brother,” she says. “He was just an ordinary guy - who was anything but ordinary to those who loved him - who worked hard and

Missing person At the time of this report, RCMP are actively investigating the case

of a missing person, who was last seen in Carlyle and reported missing late on Monday, June 18. Members are following up on all tips.

an extended period of time at a residence in Redvers was dealt with by the owner at the request of police.

Alcohol-related offence(s) RCMP members responded to a report of an intoxicated individual causing damage at a residence.

An intoxicated individual was lodged in cells until sober.

Members responded to a report of several intoxicated individuals drinking in Carlyle.

Police made patrols after an intoxicated individual was reported after causing problems at a residence.

Attempted abduction RCMP are investigating an allegation of an attempted abduction in Carlyle.

Child Welfare Members conducted and/or assisted with two child welfare investigations.

Criminal harassment RCMP are conducting a criminal harassment investigation.

Disturbance An individual who was causing a disturbance at a business in Carlyle received a warning from police.

Police responded to a report of possible shots fired in the Carlyle area.

Fire Police assisted Carlyle Fire & Rescue with a vehicle fire.

Members assisted the Wawota Fire Department at a fire.

Fraud RCMP are investigating the case of a youth who is allegedly fraudulently collecting donations for the Regina Humane Society.

“If someone is legitimately canvassing for a registered charity, they will have proper documentation identifying themselves as such,” says Staff Sgt. Darren Simons. “Even if they do have documentation and you’re uncomfortable, you can always donate to any registered charity online.”

Members are conducting an investigation regarding a possible fraud involving forgery in Carlyle.

Indecent exposure An individual in Redvers was charged after allegedly exposing himself.

A theft in the Carlyle area is currently under investigation by RCMP. Police charged an individual after they were found to be shoplifting at a business in Carlyle.

A reported theft was deemed to be unfounded by police.

A property owner in the detachment area reported finding possibly stolen property to the RCMP. A stolen bike was recovered by its owner.

Traffic offences/ Collision(s) A recent tractortrailer rollover at the junction of Hwys 9 and 13 south, near Carlyle has resulted in the truck’s driver being charged with driving with undue care and attention; an offence which carries a $280 fine. The RCMP is still investigating this accident with the Department of Transport to determine whether further charges will be pending.

Members issued several speeding tickets this week, with most of them totalling over $200. One driver was fined a total of $570 for speeding and for passing an emergency vehicle which had its lights on.

“Remember - when you’re near any emergency vehicles or in a construction zone, slow to 60,” says Staff Sgt. Simons.

Members made patrols after receiving a report of an impaired driv-

er who was also driving without a valid licence.

Police also made patrols in response to an impaired driver in the Kenosee Lake area, as well as two reports of impaired drivers on Hwy 9.

Members responded to a call involving the unsafe parking of farm machinery.

Members alerted the Broadview RCMP detachment regarding an erratic driver in their area.

Police spoke to an individual walking on a highway, as they were concerned about this person’s safety.

Two motorists were found to be driving without valid licences.

The fine for this offence is $150.

A driver was fined $175 for driving with an inadequately-secured load.

Three individuals were fined $175 each for not wearing seatbelts.

A motorist failed to stop for police.

A driver received a $100 fine for failing to produce vehicle registration at the request of a police officer. This individual also received a warning for pulling a trailer with no registration.

A hit and run which occurred in Carlyle was reported to police.

A motorist received a warning from police for driving left of the highway’s centre line.

RCMP made patrols after receiving a report of a disqualified driver.

A motorist was fined $580 for driving without valid vehicle insurance.

An individual was warned for an intersection-related offence.

The fine for this offence is $230.

Police issued numerous inspection tickets and or warnings this week, among them: improper window tint, headlamp concerns and improper mudflaps.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary

By Ken Roheiser What is our connection to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary?

Do we need both Mary and Jesus? Together they provide a flesh and blood connection to the heart of God. As children we all had a favorite parent to go to when we wanted permission for something. Maybe Dad was the authoritarian and Mom had the soft heart.

We would plead our case to Mom, and she would soften Dad’s heart so that maybe we would get our wishes.

Our approach to God is similar. We can ask God the Father in the name of Jesus for an answer to our prayer, or we can ask Mother Mary to intercede for us. We have it on good authority that we can do this from Jesus’ words to Mary and St John at the foot of the cross: “‘Woman, this is your son.’ Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother’” (John 25:26).

By Linda Wegner Constructed in 1944 in California and known locally as one of four Hulks, YOGN-82 formed part of a breakwater at the local Catalyst Paper plant in Powell River for a number of years. Yesterday it sank or, more accurately, was deliberately sunk. As recorded in our local Powell River Peak, “It was one of ten wartime ships purchased by the Powell River Company to serve as the pulp and paper mill’s breakwater. As mill production ceased, so did the need for so many Hulks.”

Although of great local interest, it was the re-purposing of the Hulk that got me thinking. Instead of merely destroying it, YOGN-82, the designation given it, will now be part of an artificial reef that will eventually become part of a unique diving destination; the ship has now been submerged at depths accessible even by novice divers.

Once the three other Hulks have been sunk, a unique reef will have

been formed and Powell River will have the genuine bragging rights to a dive site unlike most others in the world. Built for one purpose, it has been transformed into another. I, and perhaps you, sometimes wrestle with God’s purposes for my life: Am I of value to those around me? Now that life’s circumstances have changed, how can I best serve God and others? This morning’s sermon provided both encouragement and some answers: there is no challenge I can’t meet when God controls my life; then, I don’t have to try to be like someone else to serve Him. He made me the way He chose; even my weaknesses, when committed to Him, become strengths.

St. Gertrude experienced the exquisite and divine beatings of Jesus’ heart much like St. John who had reclined on the heart of Jesus at the Last Supper. St. John appeared to her in a vision and said, “Yes, I heard them, and my soul was penetrated with their sweetness even to its very center” and he explained that in later times… “the world, grown cold in the love of God, may be warmed up by hearing of such mysteries.”

The Immaculate Heart of Mary “refers to the interior life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, her joys and sorrows, her virtues and hidden perfections, and, above all,

her virginal love for God the Father, her maternal love for her son Jesus, and her compassionate love for all people”.

(Catholic Encyclopedia) Since the Resurrection Jesus and Mary have been revealing God’s love to us in extraordinary ways. Mary keeps appearing with messages to pray and repent. 70,000 witnessed the miracle of the sun at Fatima in 1917. Lourdes, Medjugorje and Guadalupe come to mind.

Jesus promised St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, “I will bless the home in which the image of my Sacred Heart shall be exposed and honored.” What tremendous help and consolation we have in the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

We have daily recourse to Jesus and Mary.

The Rosary, which Mary promotes in her many apparitions, is a daily visit with her, who intercedes for all our needs. Every Hail Mary asks Mary’s help now and at the hour of our deaths.

And Jesus gives us his very life at every Eucharist: “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I in them… Anyone who eats this bread will live forever” (John 6:56-58).

Farming future looks good

By Calvin Daniels Last week an event was held in Regina which was an indication there is still a good future in terms of farming on the Canadian Prairies.

As part of the Canadian Farm Progress Show the Saskatchewan’s Outstanding Young Farmer Award was presented.

This year I had an opportunity to interview the three finalists, and even managed to get away to do a farm feature on Jordan and Jennifer Lindgren who farm near Norquay.

We often hear concerns from people involved in the agriculture sector that one of the biggest issues facing the sector is attracting the next generation of farmer. It’s not that no young person wants to farm, but there is a huge cost to acquiring a viable farm these days, and that is a daunting thing for many.

Jordan Lindgren touched on the costs when we visited.

There was never any hesitation to buy out the farm, but it took planning, the Lindgrens related.

There were kitchen table discussions regarding succession, and Jordan and Jennifer were helped out by having some of their own land and equipment to soften the impact of taking over.

“We were preparing for it … We had built up to where we were able to do it,” said Jennifer.

The move increased the couple’s debt load, but Jordan said debt is part of farming these days.

If someone is going to farm “debt is going to be part of it,” he said.

“If there’s no risk, there’s no reward,” added Jennifer.

Without a base, Jordan said starting to farm today would be very difficult.

“Trying to start up (from scratch) is almost impossible with the costs that are involved,” he said.

But few can just take over a farm either. Even parents and relatives need to money from selling their operation to retire on.

“We had to buy everything,” said Jordan Lindgren, noting his father and uncle deserved to be paid for what they had built up through their partnership of near four decades. “It’s what they had worked their whole entire lives for. They deserved getting the most they could out of all their hard work.”

But the three Outstanding Young Farmer finalists saw the potential in the sector to take the risk.

Lee and Shannon Sluser, along with their two young children, operate a fourth generation family farm near Glenavon in southeast Saskatchewan. They entered into an agreement to purchase the operations of the family farm seven years ago from Lee’s parents. Since that time they have added 5500 acres to their farm and plan to continue expanding operations in the future.

Michael and Jessica Lovich own and operate Lovholm Holsteins at Balgonie, Saskatchewan.

They were both born and raised on dairy farms in Alberta where they got their start in the dairy industry, the couple purchasing their farm in Saskatchewan two and a half years ago.

The paths are different, the focus of their farms is different too, but they are each an example of young people committed to the business of farming, and that is a positive for agriculture.

When you have a place to call home I lived in a city of about 15,000 people when I was in the seventh grade and had a teacher who liked to take his Social Studies class to the Court House to witness new Canadians taking the Oath of Citizenship. Unfortunately, the year we entered his class he decided not to do the field trip. He explained to us that when some My Outlook people become new citizens they Shelley Luedtke can be overcome by the emotion they experience. Some of the class the previous year started laughing when they witnessed this and our teacher didn’t want his students detracting from the joy for those taking that oath.

I am reminded of that whenever I see coverage of ceremonies welcoming new Canadians because I wonder how I might have reacted if I had been sitting in that Court House as a young student. I often think it might have helped a group of seventh graders give a bit more thought to what it means to be a citizen of this nation, not because of what we studied in class, but because of what we saw on the faces of those who had taken steps to make that happen.

Imagine though, the faces of some who might be finding out they are no longer citizens of the country they have always called home.

Like the 36-year old B.C. woman who was born in Mexico to Canadian parents, and moved to Canada when she was two months old. She lived her whole life as a Canadian only to discover that her citizenship had been revoked 8 years ago. She is part of a group of people affected by a law that rescinded the citizenship of some Canadians who failed to apply to retain their nationality before they turned 28.

The law was implemented 50 years ago to address the concern that citizenship could be passed along to generations abroad whose connections to Canada were becoming less direct. The policy has since been abolished but the change wasn’t applied retroactively, so some individuals found out they were no longer considered Canadians. A spokesperson with Citizenship and Immigration Canada said

there are citizens who are affected by laws of which they may be unaware, placing them in the category of “lost Canadians” whose citizenship has “evaporated.” The problem, according to those affected, was the lack of mechanism to inform them they were in this precarious situation.

It is estimated there are at least 10 million people around the world who are stateless--they do not have a nationality of any country. It can happen due to discrimination against particular ethnic or religious groups, the transfer of territory between existing and emerging States, or gaps in nationality laws.

Some are born stateless, others become stateless.

The result can be lack of access to health care and education, the inability to get a job or have a bank account, or even get married.

Then consider for a moment the pictures we see almost every day of the individuals and families risking everything to get to a new country, or being forced from where they are and now search desperately for a place where they believe life will be better and where they can embrace opportunities they currently don’t have.

Because the country we want to belong to, matters; just as the country that claims us as belonging to them, matters. It can mean the difference between peace and conflict, freedom and persecution, plenty and want. But none of those should ever be presumed. Just as citizenship can evaporate if it is not fully understood, so can the rights and privileges if they are not fully appreciated.

Celebrations marking Canada Day will be held in small places and big cities all across our nation.

There will be parades, concerts, BBQs, cake and fireworks at many locations. At some, new Canadians will take the oath of citizenship. Hopefully at all will be an opportunity to participate in a reaffirmation ceremony and each one of us will take some time to think about the country we call home. Perhaps the look on our faces will be a lesson in gratitude and appreciation, and as we reaffirm that we will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfill our duties as Canadian citizens, there will be joy on those faces, too. That’s my outlook.

The many hazards of giant hogweed Giant hogweed is an invasive plant species found mainly in Canada, the United States and New Zealand. It typically grows in ditches and on plains as well as near waterways and railroads. Coming in contact with its sap, which contains toxins that react with the sun’s rays, can cause: • Redness • Swelling • Blisters • First- or second-degree burns These lesions appear up to 48 hours after contact with the sap and last for about a week. Skin in the affected areas can remain sensitive to light for several months, however, and scarring and brown spots might last for years.

If you come in contact with giant hogweed sap: • Quickly remove the sap without rubbing with the help of a paper towel • Thoroughly rinse the affected area with soapy water, then wash your hands • Take off your clothing and wash it by itself to avoid contaminating the rest of your laundry • Relieve any superficial burns with water compresses (for

20 minutes, four to six times a day) • Protect affected areas from light (wear long clothing and gloves, if needed) for at least 48 hours — a week if you have burns • Wear a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF for six months If your eyes are affected, rinse them thoroughly with clear water for ten minutes, wear sunglasses, and see a doctor without delay. You

should also seek medical attention in the event of severe skin lesions (e.g. presence of pus) or fever, especially for children.

Recognizing giant hogweed Giant hogweed is a plant that stands between 2 and 5 metres in height and has wide leaves. Its white, round flowers grow from a single stem.

Commit to be fit: Living Skies Crossfit to expand to Estevan Lynne Bell

Living Skies CrossFit’s upcoming expansion to Estevan is a natural extension of owner Carson Brady’s ongoing commitment to leading “as many people as I can” to a healthier lifestyle via improved health and fitness.

“With our new (upcoming) location in Estevan - Living Skies CrossFit South - I was always thinking about growth and how to reach more people,” says Brady.

The Estevan location will be located at 1009-6th Street in Estevan and although there is no firm opening date yet, construction is currently underway. The new location will house over 2,000 square feet of workout space - a fully-outfitted gym with brand-new equipment.

Living Skies members can use either location at no extra charge.

Brady will coach there as will co-owner and CrossFit coach, Lucas Brady, who has overcome physical challenges of his own.

“And like our Carlyle location, our Estevan location will be a kidfriendly zone and potentially, a pup-friendly zone, because me and Luke both have dogs,” smiles Brady.

“But seriously, if there are any single parents out there whose only way to work out is to bring the kids, bring them. We’ll have an area where they can keep busy.”

“We offer all kinds of different classes, but we really want people to reach out to us and let us know what we can do to help them,” he says.

“A lot of people have some misconceptions about CrossFit,” says Brady. “But we’re hopefully changing that. In reality, it’s functional fitness for every age and fitness level.”

“We teach people how to move properly and we teach them nutrition and mobility,” he says. “The goal is to keep them strong and healthy

in every way for as long as possible.”

“And everyone has different goals within that framework,” adds Brady. “There’s a competitive aspect to CrossFit, but that’s not something everyone wants to do and there’s no pressure to compete unless that’s something you’re interested in.”

“CrossFit is for everyone. It’s whatever you want it to be. It can be wanting to lose a few pounds or to be a better athlete,” he says. “Needs vary by degree; not by kind. But what everyone takes away is looking better, feeling better and regaining health.”

“We all want those six-pack abs,” says Brady. “But the reality goes much deeper than that. A healthy lifestyle is a hedge against chronic disease.”

“What you put in your body and your daily activities are the two variables that are going to make a real difference in your health and your quality of life,” he says.

“We’ve had people come with pre-diabetes, limited range of motion and all kinds of conditions who have turned

those things around, which is really rewarding and inspiring.”

“People are often their own worst critics,” says Brady. “But once they come in and try CrossFit, there’s not a day that goes by that someone isn’t amazed by what they’re capable of achieving.”

Living Skies CrossFit’s Carlyle location currently serves over 100 members, aged 11 to 60-plus, and Brady and his fellow coaches are committed to bring the tools for a healthier life to people in this corner of the province.

“It’s all about helping as many people as I can,” says Brady. “This is what it’s all about.”

Big Moose baseball tourney returns to Carlyle & Kenosee Submitted The 2018 edition of the annual Big Moose Baseball Tournament returns to Carlyle and Kenosee Lake from Friday, June 29 through to Canada Day, Sunday July 1.

Nine Senior Mens teams will compete this year, with the hometown Carlyle Cardinals welcoming the Arm River Indians, the Beulah (North Dakota) Blackjaws, the Estevan Taphouse Wolves, the Marysburg Royals, the Muenster Red Sox, the Saskatoon Outlaws, the Saskatoon Stallions and the Swift Current Yard Goats.

Action begins Friday, June 29 at 6:30 p.m. at Lions Park in Carlyle with the Cardinals and Arm River playing.

On Saturday, Lions Park games are as follows: Swift Current versus Marysburg at 8:30 a.m., the Saskatoon Stallions versus Beulah at 10:45 a.m., Estevan versus the Saskatoon Stallions at 1 p.m. and Swift Current versus Estevan at 3:15 p.m.

Canada Day in Carlyle will start with Estevan facing Beulah at 8:30 a.m., Arm River playing the Saskatoon Outlaws at noon and Beulah taking on Swift Current at 3 p.m.

Kenosee Lake will feature a Home Run Derby Saturday, June 30 at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday’s game schedule in Kenosee has the Saskatoon Outlaws taking on the Carlyle Cardinals at 8;30 a.m., Muenster versus Arm River at 11 a.m., Muenster versus the Saskatoon Outlaws at 1:30 p.m. and Beulah versus Marysburg at 4 p.m.

On Canada Day at Kenosee, Carlyle will face Muenster at 8:30 a.m., the Saskatoon Stallions versus Swift Current at 11 a.m., Marysburg versus Estevan at 1:30 p.m. with Marysburg versus the Saskatoon Stallions at 4 p.m.

The action will end at Kenosee Lake when the Pool A and Pool B winners compete in a final game at 6:30 p.m. on Canada Day.

Carlyle District Lions welcome ‘Lions Ride for Dog Guides’

Members of the Carlyle District Lions welcomed riders from the ‘Lions Ride for Dog Guides’ as they made a pit stop in Carlyle on Saturday, June 23. The riders - who come throughout Saskatchewan - aim to raise awareness and funds for the Canadian Lions Guide Dog program in Oakville, Ontario.

Carlyle Town Council held its regular weekly meeting Wednesday, June 20 at the Carlyle Civic Centre. Council’s next meeting will take place at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 18 at the Civic Centre.

Crosswalk The necessary components for the crosswalk planned on Carlyle’s Main Street between the RBC and Observer buildings have arrived and will be installed soon.

Dump truck The Town of Carlyle has replaced its existing dump truck with a 2006 model costing $35,000.

Grant allocations Council received notification of provincial grant allocations for the Town of Carlyle from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Government Relations.

Congratulations to Ray Lothian Mayor Wayne Orsted, members of council and Town of Carlyle staff would like to extend their congratulations and best wishes to Ray Lothian for his 70-year employment anniversary at the Carlyle Bakery and for his contributions to the community.

Carievale 4-H Beef Club Achievement Day results The Carievale 4-H Beef Club held their Achievement Day at the Gilliland farm on June 8th, 2018.

Our judges were Damian & Mikyla Cliffe of Carievale and Stacey Johnson of Gainsborough judged the record books. In the morning, the members participated in judging steers and team grooming. After lunch, the show got under way. Mike Taylor was the show announcer. Kaley McMillen and Bailey Kozma, past senior members, helped out in the ring and with the Cloverbuds. Angie Cliffe was our photographer.

Ada Irene Clarkson 1928 - 2018

Ada Irene Clarkson, late of Stoughton, SK, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family, June 18, 2018.

Ada was predeceased by her parents Oscar and Doris Rederburg, husbands Earl Richardson (1963), and K.B. Clarkson (2014); brothers: Alfred (Mary), Clifford and Howard Rederburg; brothers-in-law: Norbert Spohn, Harry and Fred Richardson; sister-in-law Merle (Keith) Wadsworth; and granddaughter Marcie Wolfater.

Ada is survived by her children: Larry Richardson (Albert Beekman), Victoria, BC, Kaye (Brian) Wolfater, Saskatoon, SK, Daryl (Pam) Richardson, Saskatoon, SK, Eian Richardson, Stoughton, SK; grandchildren: Brent (Tamara) Wolfater, Lee Wolfater, Tara Richardson (Hayden Yip), Drew Richardson (Danielle Altrogge), Julia Raynard (Shawn Tuffnell) and daughter Brielle; great grandchildren: Caera and Cayson Wolfater; sister Marion Spohn; sisters-in-law: Florence and Mary Lynn Rederburg, Mary Richardson.

Ada was born April 7, 1928 in Benson, SK. She attended school in Benson, worked in Regina for two years before her marriage to Earl Richardson in 1950. Ada and Earl settled in Stoughton and had four children. After Earl’s passing in 1963, Ada raised her children on her own until she married Bernard Clarkson in 1966. Ada and Bernard were blessed with a partnership which lasted 48 years.

Ada was a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion, the UCW, and a Sunday School teacher. Ada remained active in her church until the closing months of her life.

A Funeral Service for Ada was held Friday, June 22, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. from Grace United Church, Stoughton, SK with Reverend Elizabeth Goodson of�iciating.

Honorary Pallbearers were all in attendance. Active Pallbearers were: Al Bookman, Brent Wolfater, Lee Wolfater, Drew Richardson, Brian Rederburg and Hayden Yip. Interment was held at Stoughton Cemetery, Stoughton, SK with luncheon following at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 133, Stoughton, SK. For family and friends so wishing, charitable donations in memory of Ada may be made Stoughton Grace United Church, 216 Main Street, Stoughton, SK, S0G 4T0.

Alida News Submitted by Edel Cowan

The Alida community extends sincere sympathy to the Ewert family on the sudden death of husband, father and grandfather, Larry Ewert of Redvers (formally of Carnduff) on June 20 at the Galloway Health Centre, at the age of 68. Funeral service was held at Carnduff Legion on June 26 with interment at the Carnduff Cemetery. Memorial donations may be given to the Moose Creek Regional Park, Play Park Project.

Dianne Lemieux and Kathy Arthur went to Winnipeg on June 21 to visit their sister Ella Thomson and they returned home on June 25.

There was nice crowd that attended the Bridal Shower held June, 24 at the Alida Hall in honor of Tristan Henrion, bride-to-be of Quince Boutin. She received many beautiful and useful gifts. Best wishes as you prepare for your wedding day in October.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley were in Minot on June 25 as Ainsley had a dental appointment.

The Alida Swimming Pool opened this past weekend from 1:00 til 8:00 pm and the kids really seemed to enjoy the water. Swimming lessons are scheduled to begin in July. It’s definitely a great pastime for the kids to enjoy and learn to be safe around water at the same time.

As of today (Monday) there is only three days left of school and the summer holidays begins on June 28. The local graduation days will be here and these young people will soon be starting out on a new adventure in their life – Congratulations to all graduates. Enjoy your summer vacation time students.

It is now officially summer according to the calendar the longest day was on June 21 and that was also the beginning of summer – ENJOY – even if those pesky little mosquitoes are busy buzzing around and making life miserable and uncomfortable to be outside.

We have been missing these last rain showers.

My rain barrel is just about empty once again. I know some of you folks don’t want any more moisture but my garden could sure use a good gentle soaking again. I was able to get through my garden with my trusty hoe and even if I do say so myself it was looking fairly good, except it does need moisture again (and I’m unable to water it). Hubby even decided to spray around the outside of the garden which took care of those weeds – BUT – the ground drift also took care of my beans and my beautiful tomato plant too, guess it didn’t like where I planted them (ha).

Darn, just when there was even a nice tomato forming – oh well – next year. Speaking of forming – I have a nice spaghetti squash coming, but no pumpkins, just lots of flowers. The rest of the garden is slow and noticed that the dear little – no scratch that Big cutworms are sampling some of my little plants – Drat, can never have a critter free garden season.
