Sincere sympathy is extended to Mark and Cindy, Mitch and Christina Beriault on the death of their niece, Jasmine Ozmun who passed away June 14 at the age of 41 years in Weyburn. Jasmine was the daughter of Paulette Beriault and the late Merlyn Dixon. Condolences are also extended to all Beriault, Dixon and Ozmun family members.

A private funeral service will be held at Cantal Church followed with internment at Cantal Cemetery.

There were renovations that were happening to one of the business buildings here in Alida for the past little while.

Do believe they are now mostly completed and the business opened on June 8. It is known as JAK’S Tavern, which is owned and operated by Joel and Adrian Fraser and Kevin Mowat. With the new facelift and new faces they are looking forward to serve you. An ATM is available. In the

near future a new menu and VLTs will follow.

Gail McLachlin spent last week (June 15-21) visiting at Chestermere, AB with her family, Grace and Luke McKenna and grandchildren Thea and Finn and Mitch Cowie and Andrea Gohm. Joe Harvey arrived later in the week to help the family celebrate Gail’s 60th Birthday.

Happy Birthday Gail and many more happy ones to come.

On June 20 Gray and Edel Cowan met up with Jeff Cowan at DQ in Carlyle for a quick visit and of course a treat.

Jeff returned to Regina Sunday morning accompanied by friends.

We, (Gray and I) spent Father’s Day with Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan and her friend Lily Allen at Moose Creek Regional Park where we went on the boat, tried our hand at fishing and also met up with Lacie and Kelsey.

Enjoyed a fish fry supper before returning home.

Do hope all Dads enjoyed a great Father’s Day doing whatever they wished.

Noticed that there are more places opened now – so please remember to continue to take care, keep a physical distance, use sanitizing liquid, or gloves etc. They are all set out for your use and for everyone’s safety. Before long we will have defeated this pandemic – patience is the name of the game.

Congratulations to Filipe de Souza and Rayna Weatherald de Souza on the birth of their son, Vaughan Rio. He was born on April 6 and is a brother for Maya.

These past few days in June have been filled with many anniversaries and events. June 10 was the 95th Anniversary of the forming of the United Church of Canada.

The Methodist Church

of Canada, the Congregational Church and 70% of the Presbyterian Church entered into a union forming the largest Protestant denomination in Canada with over two million members. This event in 1925 was the first union of churches in the world to cross historical denominational lines.

June 21 was the 25th anniversary of National Ingenious Day (formerly called Aboriginal Day).

The government of Canada proclaimed that the date of the summer solstice (They got fooled this year!) would be the day to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse culture and outstanding contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Metis People.

Sunday, June 21 was Father’s Day. Fathers, stepfathers and any father figures were celebrated.

Although

my father, Denton Brehaut passed away 14 years ago, I still remember some of his advice.

When a busy day was coming up on the farm, he would try to encourage us to go to bed early by saying,”A big day tomorrow and we’re all in this together.” Another was, “Have a place for everything and put everything in its place”.

And my favorite, when making a decision about something was, “Govern yourself accordingly”.

June 20 was the summer solstice this year. Many years ago each of the solstices were always on the 21st of the months. The different dates now are more accurate. It was the longest day of the year. It also brings memories of my younger brother, the late Grant Brehaut. His birthday was on June 20 and he would have been 76 years old.

Bigger news! The Villa Board has purchased a huge 70” new television, as well as a replacement microphone and speaker. The latter are used when the Villa hosts Community

Events, such as Remembrance Day, and World Day of Prayer, and by worship groups etc.

Thank you Villa Board.

It is a Smart Television, which can access other churches and events in town. Sunday morning we had the service from the Associated Gospel Church. Singing was led by Roy Hildebrand, along with Ralph and Leora joining in. Bob Thiessen brought us up to date on the health of the congregation; and

Lester spoke of worship resources from their library. (Both have led worship at the Villa).

Pastor Alex spoke briefly and led in prayer.

Gayle cleaned out her garage, and unearthed a large red songbook. It was used at Normal School, in Regina and Moose Jaw, where we went in for teacher training in the 40’s. It has been well used, but without a pencil mark on it, and is the accompaniment to a battered

Charles Allan Maitland 1931 - 2020

Charles Allan Maitland, late of Fillmore, SK and formerly of Kisbey, SK passed away June 12, 2020 at the age of 88 years.

Charles was predeceased by his parents, Edith and Arthur Maitland; his wife, Pat Maitland; and his brothers and sisters.

Charles is survived by his children, Glenn (Nicole) Maitland and Melody (Rusell) Douglas; grandchildren: Alaina (Nathan) Blaney, Charles, Ryan and Melissa Douglas, Kayla, Bree and Kenton Maitland; brother-in-law Dennis Little; sister-in-law Anne Maitland; as well as

numerous nieces and nephews.

A Private Family Graveside Service was held Thursday, June 18, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. from the Percy Cemetery, Kisbey, SK with Pastor Dave Miller officiating. Pallbearers were: Ryan Douglas, Charles Douglas, Doug Ilchuck, Greg Johnston, Dwayne Weightman and Todd Caswell. A Come & Go Gathering for family and friends was held at the Kisbey Rec. Centre on Thursday, June 18, 2020.

Charles Allan Maitland was born September 11, 1931, in Kisbey, SK to Arthur and Edith Maitland, the youngest of 6 children. he had two older brothers, Jim and Colin and 3 older sisters, Janet, Isabel and Marjorie. He was raised on the Maitland family farm and took his schooling at the Warmley School to which he would ride his pony, “Dick.” Charlie tells of a time he was suppose to haul wood into the house. He figured that he could make a lot better time if he had Dick to haul the wood right up onto the veranda of the house, he went on to say his mother wasn’t impressed with that idea.

Charles loved living on the farm. In 1946 after Charlie’s father suffered a heart attack, Charlie and his parents moved to Kisbey, renting out the family farm. He attended Kisbey School and after school he worked for other farmers around the community. Charles, his brother Colin, his mother and his grandfather moved back up to the farm and started farming. They farmed together until Colin and his family moved onto other things.

Charlie’s niece and nephews talk about what a great time it was when they got to stay at the house with Uncle Charlie and Grandma. They talked about playing games like pick-up-monkeys and Crokino, a game Charles was very fond of teaching his children and later playing in the nursing home.

Charlie also loved curling and curled with a team that went all over Canada in tournaments, as well as many, many tournaments that were around locally. He was even able to go to Vancouver for a bonspiel. He was also a good teacher and took the time to teach and work with kids in the community. He also like to golf.

At some point Charlie’s brother introduced Charlie to a young lady named Pat Little and they fell in love. On October 4, 1971, they were married in the Estevan SDA Church. After their honeymoon, Charlie and Pat started their new life together on the Maitland farm. After studying the Bible, Charlie and Pat were baptized together in the Moose Jaw Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Just over a year later on December 15, 1972, Pat and Charlie welcomed a son Glenn Charles into their family. Then on June 2, 1977, Pat and Charlie added a daughter, Melody Edith into their family. Life was busy with a farm to run, animals to look after and children to raise.

Charlie had his kids with him in the fields from an early age. Starting with riding the tractors with him and eventually teaching them to drive the tractors for him. He also enjoyed the horses and cows as well as trail rides on horseback in the park. Both for enjoyment and as well as rounding up the cows in the fall. One time while rounding up the cattle, they were going through some bush and a branch caught his glasses while chasing cows. Charlie stopped to pick them up, while the rest continued onto the corral with the cows. Once the cows were in the corral Charlie still wasn’t there so they went back looking for him. There he was still looking for his glasses, of course him being short sighted didn’t help matters at all. Everyone joined in looking for the glasses to no avail, eventually someone looked up and instead of his glasses being on the ground, there they were, hanging on a branch.

Charlie enjoyed helping Pat put on trail rides, that included a pit BBQ and Stew Clayton performed the entertainment after supper at the Warmley School.

Charlie loved the farm and loved living in the beauty of Moose Mountains. He loved the fact that the farm was a family operation and that his grandchildren, Kayla, Bree and Kenton are the 5th generation of Maitland’s to be raised on the farm.

Pat and Charlie remained on the farm until 2016 when they went to live with their daughter Melody and her family in Wadena. While there, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren especially with their after school activities. The one he enjoyed most though was their curling.

Then the love of his life, Pat, passed away April 26, 2017. Charlie moved to Fillmore Nursing Home in January 2018. It was a good move for Charlie, he loved it there and the staff loved him Charlie passed away June 12, 2020 at the age of 88 years old in the Fillmore Nursing Home. He was a wonderful man, a loving husband, Dad, Dad-in-law, Grandfather, Uncle and friend. He was the neighbor that would come and lend a hand when needed.

He always had a big smile on his face and gave the best hugs.

He was a very kind and even-tempered man and will be missed greatly. Everyone is anxiously waiting for that wonderful day when Jesus comes to take us home with Him and we all get to see Charlie again and get one of his hugs and see his smile.

souls. We seniors need large print words to refresh our memories.

We are commanded to sing, by the Word. Do not deny us one of our Four Freedoms: The Freedom of Workship.
