Seventy years ago, 13-year-old Ray Lothian started working at the Carlyle Bakery - and the local legend hasn’t stopped since that time. Ray (pictured here with his wife, Wilma Lothian) stopped traffic on Carlyle’s Main Street, Saturday, June 16 as family, friends, and generations of employees and customers celebrated “Ray Day” and his amazing legacy of work, family, friendship and untold acts of kindness. One former employee said: “It will always be Ray’s bakery and he’s the best boss I’ve ever had.” (see story on page 3)

Lothian’s 70 years at the bakery was celebrated on Saturday, June 16. Ray says of his ongoing career: “For me, the best kind of exercise is working and I want to keep on working while I can.”

Ray Lothian’s 70 years (and counting) at the Carlyle Bakery drew media interest from the CTV network.

Here, Ray and his wife, Wilma Lothian take time out from Carlyle’s “Ray Day” festivities on Saturday, June 16 to speak with CTV Yorkton reporter, Stefanie Davis. Ray also received accolades from Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and the province’s Lieutenant Governor, W. Thomas Molloy.

In 1948, 13-year-old Ray Lothian started work at the Carlyle Bakery - and seven decades later, he’s still there and still going strong.

Lothian’s legacy goes beyond longevity, however. And Saturday, June 16’s “Ray Day” celebration proved that, as family members, friends, customers, former co-workers and employees - past and present - paid tribute to a man whose work ethic is only outmatched by his kindness towards - and respect he earned - from everyone he encountered during his amazing - and ongoing - career.

Former employee and retired teacher Barb Swanson of Kenosee Lake was one of many who praised Ray as an employer.

“He was one of the best bosses I’ve ever had,” says Swanson. “I worked for him for four years and he was my first boss. Three of the kids in our family worked for him and I remember he gave me a beautiful candle as a grad gift. He was just so thoughtful and such a good boss.”

A former co-worker of Ray’s who travelled to Carlyle especially for the celebration agrees, adding: “I worked with Ray in 1956, when Mr. Elgar owned the bakery. Ray was always, always working; always, always smiling and always, always getting along with the other employees – and it seems as though that hasn’t changed.”

“I’d say I’ve easily worked with over 200 people in the bakery,” says Lothian. “We took it over in the 70s and I’m proud to say that our employees seem to stay and I see a few of them are here today.”

Lothian says of his beginnings at the Carlyle Bakery: “We baked bread by the fire, and we had no sewer and water when I started, so I had to haul water from about a block away and I had to haul wood, too. There was no sliced bread and everything was done by hand.”

Since then, the bakery’s output and product line has expanded, with Carlyle Bakery cinammon buns and fruitcake earning iconic status, with fans both near and far.

Hundreds of congratulatory messages were gathered for Lothian, including accolades from Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and the province’s Lieutenant Governor, W. Thomas Molloy.

In his letter, Premier Moe referred to Ray as “an integral part of the Carlyle Bakery” and lauded his contribution to “our way of life and the Saskatchewan economy.”

Lieutenant Governor Molloy extended his “congratulations on 70 years of service to the Carlyle Bakery” and thanked Lothian for his “outstanding commitment to excellence.”

However, for Ray, the work - and his family are reward enough.

“I’d like to thank Steven (Lothian) for keeping the bakery going and Wilma (Lothian), Elaine (Porter), Jacky (Lothian) and Laurie (Day) for putting this day on.”

“For me, the best kind of exercise is working and I want to keep on working while I can,” he says.

“It will always be Raymond’s bakery.”

Carlyle Fire & Rescue was called out to a single-vehicle rollover at the junction of Hwy 9 and Hwy 13 near Carlyle on Tuesday, June 12 at 15:40 hours. First arriving officer on the scene saw that it was a tractor trailer hauling dangerous goods that had rolled, blocking both lanes of the highway.

Initial survey was completed and it was noted that

the driver has removed himself from the cab of the tractor unit with the assistance of bystanders and that the tank was leaking dangerous goods.

After transfering product from the damaged trailer to another tank truck, the overturned tractor and trailer were placed back on its wheels, using two bed trucks and a picker. The highway was then cleaned up of remaining hazardous goods and re-opened to the public. Crews were on the scene for approximately four hours.

R.M. No. 63 honours Ron Matsalla & Wade Fox Lynne Bell

Deputy Reeve Jack Wilson of Rural Municipality of Moose Mountain No. 63 says the R.M. not only has big shoes left to fill, “but a few pairs.”

Wilson is referring to the retirements of administrator Ron Matsalla of Carlyle and grader operator Wade Fox of Manor - who between them, have a combined 57 years of experience on the job, with Matsalla’s public service career totalling 34 ½ years and Fox’s totalling 22 ½ years.

Both men were honoured at a celebration supper catered by Weirs of Manor, Friday, June 15 at the Carlyle Memorial Hall, with family and friends, as well as reeves, councillors and constituents in attendance.

Master of Ceremonies Jack Wilson summed up each man’s career, adding: “It is with mixed feelings that we are here to say ‘Happy Retirement’ to two long-serving and dedi-

cated employees of the R.M. 63.”

“Wade Fox started in May 1996 as our mower man, but soon took over the grader in November 1996,” says Wilson. “One would say that grader operators are a breed of their own.

Wade has been with us for 22 years. If one is to analyze his career, Wade has been through four reeves and 22 councillors in total.”

“Wade mentored under and worked beside Larry Slykhuis for 17 years,” adds Wilson.

“After Larry’s retirement, Wade took over as foreman and passed on his knowledge to new employees.”

“Wade has always had a positive attitude and good work ethic.”

“Ron Matsalla started on January 16, 1984 and worked under Rita Gauthier,” says Wilson.

“Ron worked 34 ½ years as the R.M. Administrator. Ron followed in his father’s footsteps as an adminstrator. As a young lad, he did odd jobs around he office for his dad. After interning for his dad, Ron came to

Carlyle.”

“When Ron started, there were no computers,” says Wilson. “Ledgers were all hand-written and to make copies of things, one would have to crank them out on a Gestetner, whereas today, he has a computer and a push-button copier.”

“Ron’s dedication to his work was above and beyond.”

“Throughout his career, Ron has helped manage seven grader operators, and three maintenance men. He has worked under five reeves and 38 councillors.”

“And we can’t forget Ron’s hockey career with the Carlyle Cougars,” adds Wilson. “He was also on the R.M.’s curling team which won two provincial curling championships and a SARM (Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities) competition in 1990.”

“As I was looking over the history of the R.M., it was incorporated in 1912,” says Wilson. “Ron came close to serving with the R.M. for

“Wade did an excellent job and I never heard one complaint, which is a record in itself.”

“I worked with Ron for five years as a councillor and 15 years as Reeve,” says Lawrence.

“At one point, he was ready to hand in his resignation, because he wanted to be home with his friends and his dad,” says Lawerence. “I told him at that time that his friends were here in Carlyle - where he curled, played hockey, worked in the community and more.”

“So he decided to stay,” says Lawrence.

“But the surprising part is he’s got his resignation in again!”

“And you’re not talking me out of it this time!” replied Matsalla to laughter from the crowd.

The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to several calls from Thursday, June 7 to the morning of Thursday, June 14, one of which was a single-vehicle rollover involving a tractortrailer which took place at the junction of Hwys 9 and 13, near Carlyle.

Staff Sgt. Darren Simons of the Carlyle detachment has received numerous media enquiries regarding the accident, especially with regards to members of the public visiting and/or photographing incidents such as these. He says: “Members of our detachment responded to the accident along with Carlyle Fire & Rescue and local EMS. We ask members of the public not to interfere with the work of first responders.”

“If you see a collision down the road, please detour to avoid it if you can. Otherwise, you might get stuck in traffic or worse, you might see something you never want to see again,” Simons explains.

“But most importantly, if you are an onlooker at the scene of a motor vehicle accident, you are potentially putting all of the attending emergency personnel and witnesses at risk, by causing traffic jams or impeding the ability

Assault Members responded to an assault which occurred in the Kisbey area.

A possible assault in a rural area is under investigation by Carlyle RCMP. Alcohol-related offences An individual faces several charges under Canada’s Criminal Code after they triggered a hit and run investigation involving a work truck.

While impaired, this person took a vehicle without consent and became involved in an accident. This person faces the following Criminal Code charges: taking a vehicle without consent, impaired driving, hit and run, and refusing to provide a breath sample.

RCMP responded to a report of three intoxicated males walking on Hwy 9 near Kenosee Lake by a caller who was concerned for the mens’ safety. Members returned two of the men safely to their homes, while the third was lodged in police cells until sober.

Members made patrols after receiving the report of a fight involving several intoxicated individuals in the Carlyle area. However, before police arrived, the individuals involved had dispersed.

Police responded to an incidence of property damage in the Wawota area involving an impaired individual.

RCMP dealt with an intoxicated individual at a residence in the Carlyle area.

Members made patrols in response to a report of a possibly-impaired driver.

RCMP responded to a report of an intoxicated individual who was causing damage at a residence in the Kisbey area. This incident was resolved without charges.

Police received a report for information purposes involving an intoxicated male at a residence in Redvers.

Assistance Both on-and off-duty members of the Carlyle RCMP detachment worked quickly and effectively to assist an area parent in the case of a young child who was missing for a brief period of time.

Carlyle RCMP assisted the Regina Police Service with a warrant.

RCMP made patrols in response to a report of a vehicle driving slowly throughout a rural area and seemingly observing farms in a suspicious manner.

Police made patrols after someone reported an unfamiliar vehicle in an area farmyard.

Members responded to a report of an individual walking on a highway made by a concerned caller.

Police were called with regards to a skunk in a residential area.

Members responded to a report of a possiblyimpaired driver. This was deemed to be unfounded.

Break and enter Members are currently investigating an attempted break and enter at the liquor store in Carlyle. Currently, there are no suspects and no clues. Anyone with any information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Carlyle RCMP detachment by calling (306)-453-6707.

A break and enter at a cottage in the Carlyle area is still under investigation.

Members are investigating a break and enter at a residence in the Carlyle area.

Child Welfare Act Members responded two incidents regarding the Child Welfare Act. Drugs Members of the Carlyle RCMP detachment assisted Estevan RCMP Traffic members with a traffic stop in which a motorist was found to be driving impaired by drugs. A subsequent search by warrant of a residence in Arcola resulted in the discovery of illegal drugs. Police were aided in their search by an RCMP dog handler and sniffer dog from Regina.

Fire Members assisted at a fire in Carlyle.

Firearm(s)/Weapons Members of the Carlyle RCMP detachment are investigating a report of shots fired in the Carlyle area, with the as-

sistance of Regina Police and Carnduff RCMP. Police responded to a call reporting an individual carrying a large knife wandering through Kenosee Lake.

Fraud A money-laundering investigation involving an area individual who was approached via the internet and an internet relationship with a person overseas has been concluded. This matter also involved illegal activity through banking. The Canadian AntiFraud Centre has also been advised.

Fraud involving banking transactions is under investigation by Carlyle RCMP. An incidence of possible fraud was deemed to be unfounded by Carlyle RCMP. Mental Health Act Members were involved in three investigations regarding the Mental Health Act. Theft A truck was stolen in Antler. RCMP remind motorists not to leave keys in their vehicles.

In Kisbey, a boat motor was stolen.

Traffic Offences/Collisions RCMP are still investigating an allegation of a semi-truck driven erratically in Arcola.

A motorist struck a deer in the Kisbey area.

In Manor, a driver swerved to miss hitting a deer, but instead, landed in a slough.

Members are investigating an incident in which a vehicle was passed on an area highway on the inside by an erratic driver. This resulted in a confrontation. Staff Sgt. Simons advises drivers to: “Try to keep calm and give police a vehicle description and a licence plate number. Please, let us do our job, for the safety of all concerned.”

Members are investigating an incident in which an erratic driver in the Carlyle area almost struck a pedestrian.

A motorist was fined $125 for crossing a solid line to change lanes.

Carlyle RCMP responded to a report of an erratic driver. The driver was located and issued a warning, at the request of the complainant.

An erratic driver is currently under investigation by RCMP. A driver with a learner’s licence was fined $150 for driving contrary to licence conditions.

A driver was fined $580 for having no vehicle insurance.

Four motorists were fined $230 each for stop-sign violations.

Consuming insects

By Calvin Daniels Recently I was on one of the more notable social media sites and there was a post that was drawing a lot of attention, most of it citing disgust. The post was about baking bread containing flour made from ground cockroaches.

Most people were quite reactive to the post showing little interest in even being willing to try the bread based on curiosity.

In North America the idea of consuming insects as part of our regular diets is admittedly foreign. The reason is probably as simple as the fact we have not needed to munch insects because there is an abundance of what we see as better choices.

We have solidly placed insects into the ‘icky’ and ‘eww’ compartment of our brains.

It is however rather ironic to think that so many of us enjoy shrimp, and are willing to pay rather high prices for lobster, which are both essentially ‘sea bugs’ that scurry around the ocean floor forging for food among whatever happens to have passed through a fish as it swam by overhead.

In terms of ‘eww’ people might want to follow some free-range chickens one day and see just what they are willing to peck at to find food.

And let us not forget that many cheeses are enjoyed with mold as part of the taste experience.

So adding insects to our diets wouldn’t be much of a stretch once we get past the internal barriers we have created for no good reason except we have at some point been taught bugs are not to be eaten.

It turns out however that a large number of insects are quite edible, from certain types of scorpions, and cockroaches through to flies, bees and mealworms.

Now you would certainly want to be knowledgeable regarding source and preparation of any bugs, although that is good advice for anything we eat, but the take away here is that insects could be a source of food moving forward.

We know two things are part of our current reality, our world population is growing, and the arable land base to grow food upon is shrinking. If those two things continue, one day current farming will not be able to feed the world.

Enter bugs stage right.

Many insects have surprisingly high nutritional value, the aforementioned cockroach flours being a good source of added protein.

The flour made of cockroaches developed by two scientists from the Federal University of Rio Grande in Brazil contains 40 per cent more protein than normal wheat flour.

In terms of feeding the world that may become significant, especially since insects can often be raised on foodstuffs not directly in competition with humans, and they require less room and produce less waste than traditional livestock.

So it may not be that long before a legitimate farm option will be raising cockroaches, mealworms and crickets to help feed the world.

Is it beauty . . . or just a big brother?

It is presented with a big grin and hopeful heart—the heart of a child full of anticipation that the recipient will find beauty in the offering clutched in their tiny hands—a bright, colourful batch of flowers we know as dandelions.

The recipient of the bouquet usually searches for a propMy Outlook er receptacle so the flowers can Shelley Luedtke be displayed in a place of honour on a windowsill or table, much to the delight of the child who found such beauty in them.

It’s no wonder children are attracted to, and love picking, dandelions. They are eye-catching in colour and because they are so plenteous in many places it doesn’t take long getting a fistful to share as a gift.

But it isn’t just children who should be out picking and collecting them. Since the whole plant is edible, more of us could be benefitting from them as good sources of vitamins A and K, calcium, iron and magnesium. They are also a good diuretic, encourage healthy liver and kidney function, and can be used to stimulate appetite, improve skin issues, and help with heartburn.

But many of us consider the bright yellow flower against our green grass an eyesore, and the speed at which they propagate, little more than a nuisance. So why don’t we value the hearty, colourful, helpful plant that has demonstrated time and again it is rather impervious to our attempts to eradicate it?

Most of us scorn its existence as a blight on our otherwise carefully landscaped yards and consequently we spend tremendous amounts of time and money trying to rid ourselves of its presence. Yet dandelions guard against soil erosion, provide a source of nectar for bees and food for

many birds, and act as a natural mulch. Amazing beneficial properties. Yet many of us look at a dandelion and see...an obnoxious weed.

It’s changed since we were children who would eagerly pluck the plants, gather several and weave them into crowns. We saw the possibilities that existed beyond its interpretation as an eyesore and created laurel wreaths that would turn us into princesses or Olympic athletes. It’s all in what we look for that sometimes sits beyond what’s right in front of us.

I listened to a lady complain about how she needed an item from a local store and when she walked in and saw a line-up at the cash register decided she “couldn’t be bothered” to wait. She was annoyed there wasn’t an express line for her use. Instead of being impatient with a line-up at a local retailer it could instead be seen as a sign of a robust business day with those dollars staying in the community, employing her neighbours, supporting local organizations and maybe even giving her child or grandchild their first job.

Or consider that wallet full of coins you have to carry around. It’s heavy, bulky, and inconvenient for paying for anything when you’re in a hurry. What a nuisance. Except that it isn’t. It is power—purchasing power—maybe not at the level we can achieve with our paper denominations or plastic, but power nonetheless. A container of coins is a treasure much of the world’s population will never see. Coins should not be seen as inconvenient or a hassle, but instead, precious and valuable. It’s all in what we choose to see.

Will we have dandelions at my home instead of grass one day? I doubt it. But when it comes to some of the annoyances that try our patience, perhaps we need to adjust our perspective just a bit. Maybe it takes a second look—or maybe just taking our time and seeing it for what it really is.

That’s my outlook.

When she first resumed sprinting after a decades-long hiatus, Regina’s Kelly Silcox says revisiting her favourite high school sport carried few expectations. “(Sprinting) was always my sport in high school,” says the 52-year-old former Carlyle resident. “But after university, rowing became my main competitive sport. I rowed for 17 years and I really enjoyed it. I was a good rower, but not an exceptional rower.”

In high school, Silcox played volleyball, curled and competed in track and field, even though she describes herself as “not really athletic in school. I just did what everybody did in high school.”

“But I was a sprinter and I did the 100-, 200and 400- metre sprints,” she says. “When I went to university, I didn’t do

track anymore. I left it behind, but I always really missed it.”

As a member of a competitive rowing team in Regina, Silcox worked with a personal trainer who was also a track athlete at her alma mater, the University of Regina.

“I mentioned how I had run track and how much I missed it,” she says. “(The trainer) set me up with a track workout and I trained during the summer of 2015. It was like coming home.”

Soon after, Silcox joined Regina’s Excel Athletika Track and Field Club and started sprinting competitively.

“I did a few local meets in 2015,” she says.

“And in 2016, I did my first international meet the Americas Masters Games in Vancouver.”

Silcox made three trips to the podium during her first international competition - earning a silver medal for the

100-metre sprint and a bronze medal in the 200-metre sprint (both in the Women’s 50 Categories) - in addition to receiving a silver medal for the 4X100 women’s relay as part of a fourperson team from Saskatchewan. “ I didn’t really know what to expect,” says Silcox, when asked about earning medals so soon after becoming a mature competitor in her chosen sport. “And I didn’t really think about medalling. I was hoping to go in and earn some personal bests.”

“On the podium, you think: ‘Okay, I can do this.’ So (winning) pushes me to do this and gives me the motivation to see how far I can go.”

“It was an amazing experience,” she says. “It was my first international meet and there were competitors from North America, Central America and South America - but not just from the

“It was held in Vancouver and it was the inaugural event for the Americas Masters Games, so the Olympic cauldron was lit at the opening ceremony and there was a real buzz; a lot of energy.”

“You just kind of feed off that energy at a big competition like the Masters,” says Silcox. “But with the Masters, there’s also tons of friendships you make.

Masters athletes keep coming back to compete and keep moving up in age categories, so those friendships are ongoing and we follow each other’s progress.”

“There’s competition, but there’s a social aspect, too.”

Although she works full-time as a financial planner, Silcox also trains full-time.

“I train at the track three days a week and weight train twice a week,” she says. “On other days, I’ll golf or walk or do some sort of physical activity. And we train outdoors as much as we can. Even in winter, we try to get outside and work around the weather.”

When asked what she would tell others considering a return to sport, she says: “Just do it. Put one foot in front of the other and just do it. It wasn’t easy for me and the workouts were gruelling - but the more I trained and the harder I worked, the easier it became and it’s really fulfilling now.”

“In fact, I’m taking some coaching levels this year so I can coach PeeWees and Bantams as a way to give back when I retire,” says Silcox.

However, Silcox isn’t retiring yet.

“There’s a 76-yearold lady I know who competes in the 100-metre, the 200-metre, the long jump, the triple jump

and the high jump,” she says. “She’s exceptional and that’s what I want to be.”

Kelly Silcox will compete later this summer at the Canadian Masters Athletics Championships, August 3-5 in Vancouver and also at the World Masters Athletics Championships, Sept. 4-16 in Malaga, Spain.

Part of Maryfield’s School’s Graduation tradition is a visit by the grads and their escorts to the Villa. This years class are Julie Dunham and Valli Retlaff; and Riley Stewart who is our Man on the Lawnmower.

Leora, Freda and Fred and Mariann Krukoff went to the Library for tea and a visit to their displays. By Linda Wegner For a town our size, we are extraordinarily blessed with music. With a population of under 20,000 and with access only by boat or plane, we regularly host two international events. Since its founding six years ago, June is enriched annually by the music of the Pacific Region International Music Academy (PRISMA); then, every two years, the month of July erupts with the glorious harmonies of Kathaumiwx, a choral event founded in 1984. Symphonic instrumentalists come together in June while singers from around the world gather every other July; both events boast attendance in the thousands, including musicians and attendees.

After attending a PRISMA concert this week I was reminded of the power of music. Whether or not we have the vocal ability to audition for a choir or the skill to play an instrument, each of us conveys some kind of music to those around us. I was only able to find two verses in Proverbs that spoke directly to “a song” but their influences are dramatically different. Proverbs 25:20 warns “Like one who takes away a garment in cold weather and like vinegar on soda is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.”

I don’t imagine that any of us deliberately chooses to sing slap-happy melodies to someone in mourning but I do know that each of us needs to use our words to bring blessing, especially when someone is struggling.

On the other hand, by accessing the strength of God in facing trials and temptations, we find cause to sing: “By transgression an evil man is snared but the righteous sings and rejoices.” (29:6) By the way, Kathaumixw is a First Nations Coastal Salish name meaning “a gathering together of different peoples”. Such a perfect description of our earthly music festivals and reason to look forward to our eternal, heavenly celebration.

Creative ways to display diplomas and other school awards Graduation season is upon us, and grads everywhere are lining up to receive their diplomas and degrees, which represent years of hard work and discipline. Diplomas may be simple sheets of paper, but those sheets of paper are symbolic of so much more.

Yet too often diplomas end up collecting dust in a box somewhere instead of being displayed in a home.

There may be plenty of reasons why diplomas end up going from commencement ceremonies to shelves in the back of closets. Some just cannot �ind a way or a place to display their diplomas without feeling as if they are boasting about their accomplishments. Diplomas incorporated into a larger collection of items can become eye-catching components of home décor.

• Practice feng shui. The principles of feng shui suggest the “fame” area of a home is the central area along the wall opposite the front door. A “power” area

also exists in the center of the wall opposite the main entrance door. Such areas make ideal spots to display diplomas, awards and trophies that remind you of times of personal triumph. If anyone asks, let them know that you’re dabbling in feng shui and these displays are fueling the �ire of future success in your career and life.

• Create a gallery wall. Certi�icates and diplomas can be matted and framed just like any other piece of artwork. When mixed and matched with other framed pieces, they create a subtle, rather than boastful, effect. These certi�icates will blend into home décor and be part of a larger gallery look, providing visual interest and conversation pieces.

• Establish a home of�ice. Diplomas are tailormade for home of�ices. When hung behind a desk, diplomas can give a home of�ice a professional feel. Diplomas and other awards also can be housed on book shelves and mixed in with other symbols of academia, like ribbons, sports trophies and photos of classmates.

• Design a digital display. Modest graduates may not want their diplomas in full view at all times.

Awards can be scanned into a computer and turned into digital images. Include an image of your degree in a reel that includes photos from your years in academia. The images will rotate in a digital picture frame. Update the display from time to time to keep it interesting.

• Put together a portfolio. You may want to scrapbook awards and diplomas as you would other milestones in life. Purchase a sturdy binder and slip the awards into clear, protective covers. The binder can be stored on a bookshelf and pulled out whenever you want to revisit your years in school.

• Create a shadow box. Fill a shadow box with the diploma and some other mementos from school, like newspaper clippings or prom ticket stubs. The entire collection will make for a nice display you can enjoy whenever you feel compelled to take a trip down memory lane.

• Bring it to work. You may want to hang certain documents in your of�ice as proof of your credentials.

A diploma can add an air of authority to the space.

Diplomas are symbolic of signi�icant accomplishments in life. Explore the many ways to display it and be proud of the hard work required to earn your diploma.

Productive ways to spend the summer after graduation Graduation is a momentous day in the lives of college students. After years of schooling that dates all the way back to preschool or kindergarten, newly minted college graduates are �inally ready to begin their professional lives.

That can be a scary prospect for some students, especially those who graduate without jobs lined up.

The summer after graduating from college can be a time like no other in the lives of new graduates. It can be easy to grow dejected as weeks or months go by without receiving a job offer. But spending the summer after graduation as productively as possible can help graduates overcome any dejection they might feel and increase their chances of landing a job.

• Contact career services of�ices at your alma mater. Career services of�ices can help recent graduates as they look for their �irst jobs out of college.

Such of�ices may have access to job and internship opportunities that grads do not. In addition, they may coach grads on interviewing techniques and on ways to stand out in crowded job markets.

• Seek internships. If part- or full-time employment is proving elusive, don’t be afraid to seek and ultimately accept internships, which can provide a way for grads to get their foot in the doors in certain industries. Summer internships may already be �illed, so scour job boards for fall or winter internships.

• Start networking. Students who interned can get in touch with their past supervisors or mentors and �ind out if the company is hiring. Such people may be more inclined to bring someone with direct

experience onboard — even if that experience was brief and unpaid. In addition, grads can connect with adjunct professors who work in their desired �ields.

• When job hunting, don’t get pigeon-holed by your major. Just because a student graduates with a particular degree does not mean he or she needs to look for work in that �ield. In fact, many companies may prefer entry-level applicants with degrees that are not speci�ic to their industries so their new hires are blank slates who can be easily trained.

• Attend job fairs. While other graduates may be taking the summer off, enterprising grads looking for work should attend as many job fairs as possible.

Graduates likely won’t leave job fairs with employment offers in hand, but job fairs are a great way for grads to meet hiring managers and submit their résumés to potential employers.

• Customize a résumé for every job. Be sure the curriculum vitae is not static. Write and re�ine résumés for each job you apply for, mildly tweaking the wording or accomplishments to address the key phrases used in the job listing.

It can be tempting for recent college grads to spend the summers after graduation relaxing, but those who spend that time productively may lands jobs more quickly than those who do not.
