By Kelly Johnson Summer Times The Pharmasave in in Carlyle was built and opened in 2003 on the south end of the town’s Main Street and provides an excellent selection of goods for the shopper.

Steve and Jolyn Schultz (nee Brady) have owned and operated the business since its inception. The two met while living in Dauphin, Manitoba where Brady was working as a newly graduated pharmacist from the University of Saskatchewan and Schultz was a sports anchor for the local TV station.

Brady returned to Carlyle where she grew up, to work at Ramsey’s

Drugs and Schultz found work at a local car dealership, later taking employment in the oil�ield industry. Schultz grew up in Cross�ield, Alberta and went to Mount Royal University in Calgary. The couple married in 1996.

Typically, like many of the essential services and businesses that were to stay open for customers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pharmasave has seen some changes to the way they manage the store. Staying open from the �irst day of the pandemic, the resolutions put in place by the Saskatchewan Government, meant doing things differently to keep employees and

customers safe. Firstly, to avoid and lessen the chance of an unforeseen closure, the store went to a curbside model to serve their customers, preventing any chance of exposure to the staff of this vital and necessary business.

The store is now open again to walk-in customers and has taken steps to see that all shoppers have a safe and pleasant experience while shopping there.

“We certainly thank the community and surrounding area through these very trying times and very thankful for the 17 years of operation,” Steve said.

If you find the taste of raw red onion to be overwhelming, soak the slices in cold water for up to 1 hour before assembling the salad. This will mellow their flavour.

This simple summer salad is packed with nutrients and perfectly marries sweet and salty �lavours.

The pomegranate seeds add a nice pop of colour.

Start to �inish: 15 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients • 1 head curly endive or frisée lettuce, chopped • 1 radicchio, chopped

• 1 red onion, thinly sliced • 1/2 cucumber, cut in semi-circles • Seeds of 1/2 pomegranate • 200 grams feta cheese, diced • 1/4 cup olive oil • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 tablespoon Dijon or old style mustard • 2 tablespoons maple syrup

• Salt and pepper, to taste Directions 1. In 4 bowls, equally divide the lettuce, radicchio, onion, cucumber, pomegranate seeds and feta.

2. In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, lemon juice, mustard, maple syrup, salt and pepper.

4 ways golfers can improve their mental

By Kelly Johnson T. J. (Taylor) Gardiner hails from Medicine Hat, AB and works for Jenergy. He splits his time by working two weeks in Saskatchewan and two weeks in Alberta, in order to cover the company’s needs for his services.

Gardiner �irst was interested in the game of golf at the age of two (so the story goes), being encouraged by his father as soon as he was able to hold a club.

Gardiner has golfed many of the area courses including;: Mainprize, Weyburn, Golf Kenosee, White Bear and the Woodlawn in Estevan, giving preference to the Mainprize as his go-to course in the area.

When in Alberta he enjoys the Desert Blume Golf Course and his favoured spot to swing club is his home course, The Medicine Hat Golf and Country where he played his �irst ever round.

Gardiner has never had a hole-in-one and professes he is “still working on it”, coming within inches (which is not close enough) to claim the milestone all golfers hope someday to relish.

His equipment of choice consists of Titleist wedges, Callaway irons and a Krank driver and he prefers the Callaway ball.

His best round was a 76 at Weyburn and his favourite hole is the #1, par �ive at his home club in Medicine Hat. Gardiner hits the links two to three times a week (work and weather permitting) and usually gets close to 50 rounds played a year.

He recommends the Kokanee Springs course near Creston, B.C. as a must play for other golfers. His dream golf destination is the Royal Melbourne course in Australia or Pebble Beach on the California coast.

Golf is one of the most mentally challenging sports. Here are four tips to help you stay in the zone while you’re on the links.

1. Don’t dwell on bad shots No one wants to hook the ball into the trees or pencil in a triple-bogey. However, you need to be able to move on from a bad shot to focus on the next one.

Strategies for dealing with a disappointing hole include chatting with your playing partners and planning your next shot.

2. Have a pre-shot ritual Following the same procedure before every shot can help you relax and get into the right head space. Many golfers like to be consistent down to the number of practice swings and waggles they do.

3. Visualize success Con�idence can make a big difference. If you visualize yourself attaining the desired result before each shot, you may �ind you perform better. Moreover, this can help you work out a strategy for approaching a hole.

4. Stay healthy Taking care of your body will help ensure you remain mentally sharp. Drink plenty of water, eat a nutritious meal and warm up before you hit the links. You’ll feel looser and more alert.

By mastering your mental game, you’ll be able to shave a few strokes off your scorecard and make this challenging sport more enjoyable.

Tourist of the Week

By Kelly Johnson Summer Times Aditi Desai is currently living in Regina, Saskatchewan and is enrolled as a student at the University of Regina. She is completing her Masters of Electronic Systems Engineering.

Desai moved to the city of Regina a year and a half ago from Gujarat, India for her schooling.

A friend of hers visited Moose Mountain previously this June and shared their camping experience of beautiful sunrises and sunsets and suggested the popular camping spot to Desai.

Desai is camping with her family and two other families, who have also moved to Canada from India, having also highly regarded the positive review from the friend. They are set up with tent and camper trailer in Fish Creek Campground in Moose Mountain Provincial Park and have a scenic campsite backing onto Little Kenosee Lake.

“It is nice cool and pleasant weather over here.

We have done a camp�ire and have barbequed,” Desai says of their camping experience.

Desai recommends if you get a chance to visit her home country, a beautiful spot to see in India is Leh-ladakh and take a motorbike tour.

‘The nature there is beautiful with the Himalayas are in full view,” she added.

Desai has been to Banff and Jasper in her travels in Canada and someday she hopes to visit Greece, Las Vegas and Mexico.

5 canoe-camping tips Canoe-camping requires a lot of planning, especially if you intend to venture into the wilderness without a guide. Here are �ive ways to ensure your adventure is a success.

1. Choose the right route There are a number of factors to take into account when choosing a route for your canoecamping trip. Some things to consider are: • The experience and �itness level of each group member • The expected weather conditions • The degree of dif�iculty and turbulence along the waterway • The number of portages • The distance 2. 4. Learn to load your canoe To make sure the boat is stable, you’ll need to evenly distribute your gear along the bottom of it. Also, you should secure the items in place. This way you won’t lose anything if the boat capsizes.

5. Pack the appro-

priate clothing Stay away from natural �ibres like cotton and wool. Instead, opt for synthetic materials that dry quickly.

You should also pack a wetsuit, a hat to protect yourself from the sun and warm clothes for cooler evenings.

Canada’s Indigenous water crisis Access to safe, clean drinking water is a major concern among Indigenous communities in Canada. Across the country, the water supply on many First Nations reserves is contaminated, difficult to access or at risk because of faulty treatment systems. These long-standing problems have resulted in a high number of drinking water advisories.

A drinking water advisory is put into effect when the quality of a community’s water is unsafe or unknown. Residents may be advised to boil water before consumption or refrain from using it at all.

After a year, an advisory is designated long-term.

Thousands of people on First Nations reserves have been under advisory for 10 years or longer.

In addition to contamination or equipment failure, a drinking water advisory may be issued if a community doesn’t have someone trained to operate the filtration system or test the quality of the water. In fact, many affected reserves have a treatment facility but lack funding for maintenance, repairs and training.

SGAAWAAY K’UUNA (EDGE OF THE KNIFE) Based on the legend of the Gaagiixiid, or “Wildman,” this supernatural thriller is the first feature film made in the critically endangered Haida language, which is spoken fluently by fewer than 50 people. Directed by Gwaai Edenshaw, who is Haida himself, and Helen Haig-Brown of the Tsilhqot’in Nation, this story of loss, family and betrayal is also a tool for cultural preservation.

In 2015, the federal government promised to eliminate all long-term drinking water advisories on reserves by March 2021. Among the solutions are the design, construction and repair of infrastructure as well as better training and monitoring.

While 88 long-term advisories were lifted in just over four years, about 60 remain in effect. There is also serious concern among advocates that many of the government’s solutions are temporary and will result in new water advisories.

Recognizing young Indigenous leaders on National Indigenous Peoples Day National Indigenous Peoples Day, which takes place on June 21, is an opportunity to celebrate the diverse cultures and contributions of First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada. Here are three young recipients of the 2020 Indspire Award, which recognizes outstanding Indigenous achievers and role models.

She is now the executive director of the Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre where she helps deliver holistic treatment programs for trauma and addiction that blend traditional Inuit values with modern practices.

ALANA ROBERT This 25-year-old Métis from Manitoba founded Justice For Women while in university to combat gender-based violence on campus. She was also part of the Canadian delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. She is now an articling student at the McCarthy Tétrault law firm and becoming a strong legal advocate for Indigenous women and girls.

Road repairs in Moose Mountain Provincial Park

A paving crew working for GenCo Asphalt Inc. from Estevan has been busy in the Moose Mountain Provincial Park, completing the capping of the asphalt roadways in Fish Creek Campgrounds. The crew began resurfacing Highway 209 on Monday, June 15. It is the main traffic artery for tourists accessing the popular vacation spot.

2020 Provincial baseball championships cancelled The Baseball Sask Board of Governors met on Monday, June 8th and have made the extremely tough decision to cancel all 2020 Provincial Championships. This decision was not made lightly as it was a topic of discussion for many weeks now.

We were holding out hope, however, seeing that we have not even been given a date for Phase 4 to open, it was not fair to our current and future Host sites to plan adequately.

We also carry the responsibility to look out for the health and safety of our members. Provincial

Championships bring with them mass gatherings from different teams from all over Saskatchewan.

We cannot estimate what the allowable outdoor maximum gathering limit will be for late August.

Due to this, we cannot guarantee that our Championships would even be approved by the Government of Saskatchewan at that time.

We have heard from many of our members who have stated that their main area of focus will simply be to provide some type of a local baseball season for their teams and leagues. We want to

By Kelly Johnson Summer Times The Pharmasave in in Carlyle was built and opened in 2003 on the south end of the town’s Main Street and provides an excellent selection of goods for the shopper.

Steve and Jolyn Schultz (nee Brady) have owned and operated the business since its inception. The two met while living in Dauphin, Manitoba where Brady was working as a newly graduated pharmacist from the University of Saskatchewan and Schultz was a sports anchor for the local TV station.

Brady returned to Carlyle where she grew up, to work at Ramsey’s

Drugs and Schultz found work at a local car dealership, later taking employment in the oil�ield industry. Schultz grew up in Cross�ield, Alberta and went to Mount Royal University in Calgary. The couple married in 1996.

Typically, like many of the essential services and businesses that were to stay open for customers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pharmasave has seen some changes to the way they manage the store. Staying open from the �irst day of the pandemic, the resolutions put in place by the Saskatchewan Government, meant doing things differently to keep employees and

customers safe. Firstly, to avoid and lessen the chance of an unforeseen closure, the store went to a curbside model to serve their customers, preventing any chance of exposure to the staff of this vital and necessary business.

The store is now open again to walk-in customers and has taken steps to see that all shoppers have a safe and pleasant experience while shopping there.

“We certainly thank the community and surrounding area through these very trying times and very thankful for the 17 years of operation,” Steve said.

Start to �inish: 15 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients • 1 head curly endive or frisée lettuce, chopped • 1 radicchio, chopped

• 1 red onion, thinly sliced • 1/2 cucumber, cut in semi-circles • Seeds of 1/2 pomegranate • 200 grams feta cheese, diced • 1/4 cup olive oil • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 tablespoon Dijon or old style mustard • 2 tablespoons maple syrup

4 ways golfers can improve their mental

By Kelly Johnson T. J. (Taylor) Gardiner hails from Medicine Hat, AB and works for Jenergy. He splits his time by working two weeks in Saskatchewan and two weeks in Alberta, in order to cover the company’s needs for his services.

Gardiner �irst was interested in the game of golf at the age of two (so the story goes), being encouraged by his father as soon as he was able to hold a club.

Gardiner has golfed many of the area courses including;: Mainprize, Weyburn, Golf Kenosee, White Bear and the Woodlawn in Estevan, giving preference to the Mainprize as his go-to course in the area.

When in Alberta he enjoys the Desert Blume Golf Course and his favoured spot to swing club is his home course, The Medicine Hat Golf and Country where he played his �irst ever round.

Gardiner has never had a hole-in-one and professes he is “still working on it”, coming within inches (which is not close enough) to claim the milestone all golfers hope someday to relish.

His equipment of choice consists of Titleist wedges, Callaway irons and a Krank driver and he prefers the Callaway ball.

His best round was a 76 at Weyburn and his favourite hole is the #1, par �ive at his home club in Medicine Hat. Gardiner hits the links two to three times a week (work and weather permitting) and usually gets close to 50 rounds played a year.

He recommends the Kokanee Springs course near Creston, B.C. as a must play for other golfers. His dream golf destination is the Royal Melbourne course in Australia or Pebble Beach on the California coast.

Golf is one of the most mentally challenging sports. Here are four tips to help you stay in the zone while you’re on the links.

1. Don’t dwell on bad shots No one wants to hook the ball into the trees or pencil in a triple-bogey. However, you need to be able to move on from a bad shot to focus on the next one.

Strategies for dealing with a disappointing hole include chatting with your playing partners and planning your next shot.

2. Have a pre-shot ritual Following the same procedure before every shot can help you relax and get into the right head space. Many golfers like to be consistent down to the number of practice swings and waggles they do.

3. Visualize success Con�idence can make a big difference. If you visualize yourself attaining the desired result before each shot, you may �ind you perform better. Moreover, this can help you work out a strategy for approaching a hole.

4. Stay healthy Taking care of your body will help ensure you remain mentally sharp. Drink plenty of water, eat a nutritious meal and warm up before you hit the links. You’ll feel looser and more alert.

By mastering your mental game, you’ll be able to shave a few strokes off your scorecard and make this challenging sport more enjoyable.

Tourist of the Week

By Kelly Johnson Summer Times Aditi Desai is currently living in Regina, Saskatchewan and is enrolled as a student at the University of Regina. She is completing her Masters of Electronic Systems Engineering.

Desai moved to the city of Regina a year and a half ago from Gujarat, India for her schooling.

A friend of hers visited Moose Mountain previously this June and shared their camping experience of beautiful sunrises and sunsets and suggested the popular camping spot to Desai.

Desai is camping with her family and two other families, who have also moved to Canada from India, having also highly regarded the positive review from the friend. They are set up with tent and camper trailer in Fish Creek Campground in Moose Mountain Provincial Park and have a scenic campsite backing onto Little Kenosee Lake.

“It is nice cool and pleasant weather over here.

We have done a camp�ire and have barbequed,” Desai says of their camping experience.

Desai recommends if you get a chance to visit her home country, a beautiful spot to see in India is Leh-ladakh and take a motorbike tour.

‘The nature there is beautiful with the Himalayas are in full view,” she added.

Desai has been to Banff and Jasper in her travels in Canada and someday she hopes to visit Greece, Las Vegas and Mexico.

5 canoe-camping tips Canoe-camping requires a lot of planning, especially if you intend to venture into the wilderness without a guide. Here are �ive ways to ensure your adventure is a success.

1. Choose the right route There are a number of factors to take into account when choosing a route for your canoecamping trip. Some things to consider are: • The experience and �itness level of each group member • The expected weather conditions • The degree of dif�iculty and turbulence along the waterway • The number of portages • The distance 2. 4. Learn to load your canoe To make sure the boat is stable, you’ll need to evenly distribute your gear along the bottom of it. Also, you should secure the items in place. This way you won’t lose anything if the boat capsizes.

priate clothing Stay away from natural �ibres like cotton and wool. Instead, opt for synthetic materials that dry quickly.

You should also pack a wetsuit, a hat to protect yourself from the sun and warm clothes for cooler evenings.

Canada’s Indigenous water crisis Access to safe, clean drinking water is a major concern among Indigenous communities in Canada. Across the country, the water supply on many First Nations reserves is contaminated, difficult to access or at risk because of faulty treatment systems. These long-standing problems have resulted in a high number of drinking water advisories.

A drinking water advisory is put into effect when the quality of a community’s water is unsafe or unknown. Residents may be advised to boil water before consumption or refrain from using it at all.

After a year, an advisory is designated long-term.

Thousands of people on First Nations reserves have been under advisory for 10 years or longer.

In addition to contamination or equipment failure, a drinking water advisory may be issued if a community doesn’t have someone trained to operate the filtration system or test the quality of the water. In fact, many affected reserves have a treatment facility but lack funding for maintenance, repairs and training.

On National Indigenous Peoples Day, take a moment to watch and listen to the stories of Canada’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities as told by Indigenous filmmakers.

3. SGAAWAAY K’UUNA (EDGE OF THE KNIFE) Based on the legend of the Gaagiixiid, or “Wildman,” this supernatural thriller is the first feature film made in the critically endangered Haida language, which is spoken fluently by fewer than 50 people. Directed by Gwaai Edenshaw, who is Haida himself, and Helen Haig-Brown of the Tsilhqot’in Nation, this story of loss, family and betrayal is also a tool for cultural preservation.

In 2015, the federal government promised to eliminate all long-term drinking water advisories on reserves by March 2021. Among the solutions are the design, construction and repair of infrastructure as well as better training and monitoring.

While 88 long-term advisories were lifted in just over four years, about 60 remain in effect. There is also serious concern among advocates that many of the government’s solutions are temporary and will result in new water advisories.

Recognizing young Indigenous leaders on National Indigenous Peoples Day National Indigenous Peoples Day, which takes place on June 21, is an opportunity to celebrate the diverse cultures and contributions of First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada. Here are three young recipients of the 2020 Indspire Award, which recognizes outstanding Indigenous achievers and role models.

her activism at the age of 10 when she released an original protest song and music video against a controversial pipeline proposal. She has since advocated for Indigenous rights at United Nations conferences, environmental events and in classrooms around the world. She’s also an awardwinning actress.

ALICIA ARAGUTAK This 26-year-old Inuit from Umiujaq in northern Quebec founded the Qarjuit Youth Council, a nonprofit organization that provides support and programs for young adults in Nunavik communities.

She is now the executive director of the Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre where she helps deliver holistic treatment programs for trauma and addiction that blend traditional Inuit values with modern practices.

ALANA ROBERT This 25-year-old Métis from Manitoba founded Justice For Women while in university to combat gender-based violence on campus. She was also part of the Canadian delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. She is now an articling student at the McCarthy Tétrault law firm and becoming a strong legal advocate for Indigenous women and girls.

Road repairs in Moose Mountain Provincial Park

A paving crew working for GenCo Asphalt Inc. from Estevan has been busy in the Moose Mountain Provincial Park, completing the capping of the asphalt roadways in Fish Creek Campgrounds. The crew began resurfacing Highway 209 on Monday, June 15. It is the main traffic artery for tourists accessing the popular vacation spot.

2020 Provincial baseball championships cancelled The Baseball Sask Board of Governors met on Monday, June 8th and have made the extremely tough decision to cancel all 2020 Provincial Championships. This decision was not made lightly as it was a topic of discussion for many weeks now.

We were holding out hope, however, seeing that we have not even been given a date for Phase 4 to open, it was not fair to our current and future Host sites to plan adequately.

We also carry the responsibility to look out for the health and safety of our members. Provincial

Championships bring with them mass gatherings from different teams from all over Saskatchewan.

We cannot estimate what the allowable outdoor maximum gathering limit will be for late August.

Due to this, we cannot guarantee that our Championships would even be approved by the Government of Saskatchewan at that time.

We have heard from many of our members who have stated that their main area of focus will simply be to provide some type of a local baseball season for their teams and leagues. We want to

We sincerely thank all of our communities that were prepared to Host a Championship. You will all be given the right of �irst refusal to host these again in 2021.
