Visitor Centre at MMPP closed until further notice

The Visitor Center at Moose Mountain Provincial Park will not be open this summer until there is more direction about Phase 4 in which it falls. It is also unknown at this time as to when the Administration Office can open to the public. The campground and entry gate opened June 1. People can still call the Administration Office for questions regarding the park, but inquires about businesses at Kenosee opening should be directed to the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan or the updates by the provincial government instead of the Visitor Center.

Tourist of the Week

By Kelly Johnson The Observer/Summer Times Summer Times Tourist of the Week is Doug Dreis of Weyburn, SK, who is camping at the Fish Creek Campground in Moose Mountain Provincial Park.

Doug is camping with his wife, Sherry and their dog, Moka. They have been coming to the Park for seven years.

What makes it the favoured spot to camp is the privacy of the site and the ample space to set up “home” for the summer.

Dreis and his wife are retired and have camped in Banff, Calgary, Edmonton, and Medicine Hat in Alberta, Swift Current and Prince Albert in Saskatchewan.

Of their most memorable camping experiences was to Lake of the Woods near Kenora, ON, where they went with their children, who were quite young at the time. They enjoyed exploring the history along the highway that runs through the Canadian Shield and seeing the Inukshuks, which are structures made of piled stones to mark sacred places or to mark directions.

Clear Lake, MB was a uniquely beautiful spot they have set up camp at. The campsite was situated near a small town that was within walking distance and reminded Dreis of camping at Banff.

Future camping trips Dreis would like to embark on are Yellowstone National Park in the USA and the Canadian Maritimes.

Saskota Baseball League waiting to begin play

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury In a normal year, the Saskota Baseball League would be a couple of weeks into its season, treating fans to entertaining senior men’s games in many southeast Saskatchewan communities.

But obviously this isn’t a normal year, and the league has been idling, hoping to get some form of a season in.

President Kelly Trimble said that about a month and a half ago, they had discussions on how they could move forward. They decided to wait on Baseball Canada and Baseball Saskatchewan to give them and other leagues across the province to give them the green light.

“We are in a waiting period,” said Trimble.

“There’s optimism about a start for the season at the beginning of July, but that’s just hearsay.”

From there, they would have to decide on a shorter season that would end in July, or an extended season that would last into August. Normally the Saskota season starts in mid-May and ends about 2 1/2 months later at the end of July.

The league would also have to make a decision on the year-end Harbourne Memorial Tournament that has been held in Kenosee Lake each year.

It could be tough to have that many people in one area for the tournament, but they might not have a choice. The league might also consider having a more traditional playoff.

Trimble is pleased with how teams have handled this situation. He has talked to some of the team representatives, and they want to get back out on the diamonds because they love the game.

“To have a season without baseball (is tough), I’ve played baseball since I was �ive, and I’m 38 now.

De�initely I would miss it, but I guess the way of the world and the way of the league is safety �irst,” said Trimble.

Teams have been patient, and they hope to play a little baseball this year.

The nine teams who were part of the league last season – the Estevan Tower Wolves, Southeast Fireballs, Oxbow Chiefs, Carnduff Astros, Carlyle Cardinals, Redvers A’s, Arcola Threshers, Kenosee Cubs and Kipling Royals – were all slated to be back this year. The Astros won the Harbourne Memorial Trophy last year. The Wawota Pats had also indicated they want back in, but Trimble isn’t certain if Wawota would be back for a shortened season.

A schedule had been designed for 2020, using the format from last year, but the league had yet to have its spring meeting, so nothing was �inalized.

Golfer of the Week

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Shane Compton is from Assiniboia and was found gol�ing The Bear at White Bear Lake Resort. White Bear Lake Golf Course was the �irst golf course he ever played.

Compton originally is from La�leche, SK and moved to Saskatoon, SK with his family where he attended school.

It was during his school years that he became an avid golfer, crediting his father for introducing him to the game.

Compton and his school friends would head to the Wildwood Golf Course daily, sometimes playing as many as 36 holes in a day, weather and sunlight

Compton has played golf at Willowbunch, The Willows in Saskatoon, Carlyle, Golf Kenosee, Royal Regina, Waskesiu and Elkridge and at destinations in Alberta when he was younger.

His preferred

course is the White Bear course and his favourite hole is the par 3, #11.

He �inds Ricky Fowler as the most interesting Pro Golfer.

Compton’s clubs of choice are Callaway and he likes Nike balls.

His best round ever was a 3 under par, at the par 70 Wildwood course in Saskatoon

and of the less favourable golf memory he has, was shooting 102 at Deer Valley during a Saskatchewan Junior Golf Championship.

Compton has never had a “hole in one” reminiscing of coming within millimetres of the cherished event that each golfer hopes to record someday.

Rule 25-1c/3 Ball Played in Ground Under Repair Area Lost in Same Area

By Golf Saskatchewan QUESTION: In the diagram above, a player’s tee shot comes to rest at point A in a large area of ground under repair. He/She makes a stroke at his/her ball from within ground repair. He/She advances the ball to point B, which is still in the ground under repair, and the ball never crossed the outermost limits of the ground under repair. The ball cannot be found. What is the ruling?

ANSWER: The player may drop a ball outside the ground under repair area, without penalty, as provided in Rule 25-1c and make his third stroke. In this case, the reference point is where the ball last crossed the outermost limits of the ground under repair with the player’s tee shot (point C).

Alternatively, the player may, under penalty of one stroke, drop a ball in the ground under repair as near as possible at

the spot from which his original ball was lasted played (point A) under Rule 27-1 and make his/her fourth stroke. Having dropped a ball under Rule 27-1, if the player then has interference from the ground under repair, he may take relief under Rule 25-1b without further penalty.

- Carlyle Bakery and Dayzi’s Doughnuts

By Kelly Johnson The Observer/Summer Times Each week, for the next 12 weeks, Summer Times will “randomly” choose a business in the area to showcase.

Unfortunately we can’t showcase all businessess in this time period.

The Carlyle Bakery is located on Main Street in Carlyle and has been serving up fresh baked goods to the surrounding area for decades, going back to the 1940’s when it was originally opened by Bill Elgar.

Anyone holidaying at the area resorts are sure to recognize the aroma of the famous cinnamon buns, which have surely traveled home to households across Canada and into the USA. The Bakery was purchased from Elgar by longtime employee, Ray Lothian in 1977 and his son Steve bought into the business in 1990, subsequently buying out another share held by Kurt Biberdorf in 1999.

Dayzi’s Doughnuts opened in April 2018 in the adjacent building, which Lothian purchased.

Dayzi’s Doughnuts is the stop for those buying baked goods and provides an eat-in menu with a sit down area for customers to have a cup of coffee and to enjoy the delicious goods the businesses offer.

At this time, Dayzi’s is not open due to the pandemic and there is not a plan in place yet to reopen the café to customers. However, the bakery business seen an uptick in sales at the start of the pandemic when people stocked up. Sales of the fresh baked goods have been steady as always. And now with tourists coming to the area, they will be able to enjoy their favourites as usual this summer.

Revitalizing green smoothie

Do you need an energy boost? This delicious and refreshing smoothie is the perfect solution.

Start to �inish: 10 minutes Servings: 2

Ingredients • 1 banana, sliced and frozen • 2 kiwis peeled, sliced and frozen • 1/2 cup pineapple peeled, diced and frozen • 2 cups baby spinach • 2 cups vegan milk • 1/2 cup coconut water • 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey • 1 teaspoon almond extract Directions 1. Use a blender to purée all the ingredients.

2. In 2 glasses, evenly pour the smoothie.

3. Garnish with berries.

This in turn will put members of extended household contacts at risk. Several outbreaks, both large and small, have been linked to large gatherings here in Saskatchewan and around the world. Any gathering with more than 10 people outdoors are in violation of the current Public Health Order.

On June 8, the allowed size limit for outdoor gatherings will be raised to 30. Regardless of the gathering size, two metres of separation is to be maintained at all times.

Organizers are encouraged to have gatherings done in vehicles. If groups are wanting to congregate or march on foot, they are advised to keep a distance of two metres or more between each person at all times.

Groups are encouraged to treat marching and protesting as though they are visiting a large urban park where hundreds of people may be at any given time across a wide space, but promote safety by main-

taining the two metres or more of physical distancing.

Mask use and frequent hand hygiene is encouraged. Items must not be shared or passed back and forth among participants. In situations where singing or chanting is happening it is recommended that the physical distancing be expanded beyond the recommended two metres as this behaviour expels the virus at a greater velocity and distance. Consider using signs or banners instead.

Organizers of any protests or rallies are encouraged to contact local public health offices for guidance.

All groups or individuals contemplating participation in protests or marches should consult information on public health orders and gathering size limitations.

The risks and public health violations apply to all large gatherings.

While peaceful public protests are a part of our democracy, please be aware of the elevated risk to yourself and your loved ones, particularly those in your extended household who may be more vulnerable.
