Weekend storm causes extensive damage

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning of June 27 and 28 southeast Saskatchewan was the recipient of a much needed rain. The system also

brought with it some high winds, causing extensive damage to a new facility for Loraas Disposal Company being built in Kennedy, SK. The winds blew down the partially completed wood structure that was still in the framing stage of

construction and was nearly ready for cladding and closing in.

No one was available to assess the total damage or value of the damage to the property caused by the weekend storm system.

Cornerstone files third consecutive deficit budget Submitted by Norm Park, Contracted Reporter for SECPSD The 2020-21 budget for the South East Cornerstone Public School Division has been sent to the provincial Ministry of Education for approval.

For a third consecutive year, the local division is filing a $4.6 million cash deficit operational budget said Shelley Toth, the division’s chief financial officer.

Pending wholesale adjustments triggered by necessary responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, the current budget includes $112.5 million in projected revenues and operating expenditures of $111.6 million and $11.6 million for capital expenditures.

“We haven’t identified some cost savings this year, but when we do, we will have to post them separately for future use as a one time event and then we’ll be posting additional future costs as an individual item too,” she said.

Once the provincial health and education bodies indicate what will be expected of the school divisions moving forward into a new academic year, these numbers and budgeted items will become more concrete.

Toth said there is a 1.8 per cent increase in over-

all funding being put in place for SECPSD in this year’s provincial budget and the two per cent increase in salaries for teachers as well as contracted union employees will be covered by the province.

“When it’s all together and we’ve pulled out all the information, it’s a $4.6 million operational deficit,” Toth said.

The division had been dipping into an accumulated surplus of about $30 million to accommodate past operating deficits and they will do so again this fiscal year.

“We could be down to $25 million surplus for sure, and we’re hoping for better in the future, we’ll just have to wait and see what August brings,” she said.

On the capital expenditure file, Toth said $8.2 million of the overall $11.6 million is to be directed to the new Weyburn elementary school.

Another $1.5 million is designated for computer hardware and equipment for eight schools that will be “refreshed” and the data centre receiving an upgrade.

There is another $1.5 million set for the purchase of new school buses.

Trustee Jim Henderson noted that at one time

when the currency exchange rate was more beneficial for Canada, they would be able to purchase 10 new school buses from the American suppliers, now that’s probably not possible.

Another $225,000 is being set aside for other division vehicles and $131,000 is designated for the purchase of office furniture and equipment.

Toth explained the $8.2 capital grant for the Legacy Park Elementary School in Weyburn, will not be expensed until the construction is complete.

The school will be amortized over a 50-year period.

To explain the operating cash deficit, Toth tabled a report showing operating revenues at $111.5 million and expenses just under $116.5 million that included $11.6 million in tangible capital assets statements, and a further $6.6 million in amortization and $94,500 for future employee benefits.

Debt servicing is now just around $600,000 or less than one per cent of the overall operations while salaries and benefits take up 72 per cent of the expenditures, or nearly $80 million. Goods and services eat up another 22 per cent, or $24.4 million and amortization at six per cent grabs the aforementioned $6.6 million.

Farm sector on verge of another significant change

By Calvin Daniels Over the decades there have been significant shifts in agriculture at the farm level.

Most have been tied to production, the move from horses to tractors, the move to zero-till farming, the use of global positioning technologies.

But there has also been shifts in what is grown.

Some of those shifts are based on better varieties, rust resistance in wheat as an example.

But others have been because markets evolve.

Canola has become king in terms of Prairie crops because of demand for its unique oil.

Pulse crops have grown in terms of acres planted because new markets are being developed for Canadian products.

It is likely the farm sector is on the verge of another significant change, this one because a new market is merging that will likely become a major one moving forward.

The new market that is emerging, and quite like-

ly is going to grow significantly, is for plant-based protein, which is then turned into products such as the successfully marketed Beyond Burger and Impossible Burger.

With hamburger chains jumping on the meatless burger train interest in products that mimic the taste of meat, and offer the protein too, are drawing attention. These products were initially thought of largely as an alternative for vegetarians, but is clearly finding fans beyond those on strict vegetable diets.

We are now seeing dollars invested in infrastructure to meet the growing demand for plant protein.

For example, the federal government recently announced $90 million to the Merit Functional Foods plant protein plant in Winnipeg. The money a, package of loans from Agriculture Canada, Farm Credit Canada and Export Development Canada, was announced June 22, by federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau.

to extract canola and pea protein for human consumption.

The Merit facility is not the only one being built to produce plant protein. French processor Roquette is building a pea protein plant in Portage la Prairie and other plant protein projects are proceeding both on the Prairies and across North America.

And, in Saskatchewan the government will be supporting the Bridge2Food Virtual 15th Plant-Based Foods and Proteins Summit North America 2020 being held June 22-26.

“Last year, this event was held in Saskatoon, the first time the event was hosted in North America, and it was a big success for the plant-based protein sector and larger agriculture value chain in the province,” Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison said.

Such investments, both research and infrastructure, hint strongly about the potential of a new market for farm crops, and emerging demand from consumers for new foods.

Scrutiny of pandemic budget lacking

By Murray Mandryk For all the talk of the need for legislative sitting to scrutinize the budget, Finance Minister Donna Harpauer’s 2020-21 budget hasn’t exactly been all that thoroughly scrutinized.

This is just not great news for voters going to the polls in October.

Admittedly, why we are in circumstances of this abbreviated 14-day session to quickly pass a budget has everything to do with the COVID-19, circumstances beyond the control of politicians.

Like most everything else everywhere else including the economy, the Saskatchewan legislature was just one more thing that had to be shutdown last March.

No one could have done much about that nor could anyone do much about the major source of the record $2.4-billion deficit.

As has been discussed in this space before, the 2020-21 budget saw a $350-millon drop in tax revenue and a whopping $753-million reduction in natural resources revenue (including a $409-million reduction in oil and gas revenue this year).

No amount of budget scrutiny is going to change the revenue picture.

And because Harpauer can’t really get a handle on our revenue situation (a difficult task at the best of time in a volatile natural-resource-based economy), it’s exceedingly difficult to get a handle on a four-year outlook for coming mandate of the next government.

Unfortunately, that also happens to be a convenient excuse for a government to put forward a shaky budget and to not put forward a long-term plan.

This shouldn’t be acceptable. More than ever, wee need a sharp plan to deal with the challenges we are facing. It’s actually more important than ever for the Opposition to challenge the government on its plans.

So one can only wonder why that hasn’t always been the Saskatchewan NDP’s focus.

Yes, it is harder in condense an effective critique of a troubled budget in such a short time.

But that only raises serious questions about the NDP Opposition’s approach … and maybe how our political system works in general.

The first curious thing is why the NDP, at least to date, hasn’t spent more time focussing on spending decisions that surely need to be cut back under today’s circumstances.

One gets that any Opposition is going to have its own pet issues, especially, in an election year where it is trying to rally it’s own troops. In NDP terms, that means harkening back to its hay days of 1980s when it was battling former Progressive Conservative premier Grant Devine’s privatization agenda and, of course, Devine himself.

That has translated into accusations of Premier Scott Moe selling off Crown Corporations to re-balance the books. There have also been accusations of Devine somehow profiteering off the creation of a publicly run meth treatment facility, although the NDP has offered no meaningful evidence that any decision on the location was made because of Devine or that the former premier benefitted.

All this has served no meaningful to today’s average taxpayer, distracting from the more critical issues of what we are spending and how we can get back to balance.

Can we keep building as many schools and hospitals or paying public service the wages we are paying them? These are the tough questions that need to be asked.

Getting the books in order is going to require some very difficult choices, many of which will revolve on austerity measures. That Saskatchewan public servants haven’t taken the hit that others in the economy have is an issue most everyone has been talking about.

We aren’t getting answers from the Sask. Party government reluctant to address the issue before the Oct. 26 vote.

But as it stands right now, the NDP aren’t asking the tough questions, either.

We did need a better budget from the government, but right now we need better scrutiny of that budget from the opposition.

A bridge not too far It’s hard not to idealize the place and paint it as more idyllic than it might have been, but that is my perception of a Bible camp in Alberta where my family spent time when I was very young.

There were other camps I went to over the years but this one really stands out—perhaps because of the way childhood impressions get formed.

I can remember the dining Shelley Luedtke hall and the playground. The arts and crafts shack. Cream soda at the canteen. Singing during chapel times. The picnic tables where we met for classes. The huge field where we played games.

And the bridge. I remember the bridge.

There was a bit of a gorge on the property that made it a bit difficult to get from one building to the other so people often sought a longer way around to access a road that provided a straighter, smoother path.

The decision was made to build a bridge—a bridge that would cross the ravine and provide an easier walk between areas of the property. A huge change for the camp.

My dad played a major role in making the bridge happen and I always thought of it as my dad’s bridge.

I found out in the last number of years that other people describe it in those terms, too. It would make me proud to think about that bridge; that big yellow structure dotting the landscape of such a special place.

Last summer my daughter worked at that camp and it provided an opportunity to go back and see the place, re-visit special spots, and of course walk across the bridge. But as we drove into the camp it quickly became apparent I didn’t have quite the clarity of memory I thought I had.

Not surprisingly, there were new structures on site while others were gone, owing to the time that had passed and the changes that had occurred. But there was something else, too. Some buildings were in the wrong place, paths didn’t lead to where they should, and areas were smaller than they once were.

I was discovering how differently a child remembers some things.

I couldn’t wait to get to the bridge, so I headed across the camp and then had to adjust my course when I realized I was slightly off track. The bridge was not where it had lived in my memory for the past decades.

And it was brown. Apparently it always had been.

So although I didn’t hang on to the memories quite as tightly as I thought, it was nevertheless so good to stand on and walk across that bridge. The bridge itself had loomed large in my mind; a bridge that was built to provide increased access, a bridge that brought areas of the camp together, a bridge that served an important function and filled a need so perfectly.

My dad was not an engineer nor was he in construction. But he, along with a group of others, built a bridge. It has seen board replacements and new paint to be sure, but it has ultimately stood strong over the decades. He built many bridges in his life.

This may have been the only physical one, but there were many, many others. Ones forged by kindness, compassion, understanding and caring for the needs of others.

We need more bridge builders. We need the type of people committed to providing others with access to where they want to be. People that see a way to bring others together. People willing to put in the work doing what they can to lift others up.

I don’t foresee a time when I will physically put hammer and nail to build an overpass but then again, who knows. But I can certainly be a bridge builder.

Imagine years from now looking back and recalling those bridges being built today. We may not see the work that has gone in to them nor may we remember them in quite the same way, but how wonderful would it be if those bridges were still standing and would have been responsible for a huge change in the world.

Let’s acknowledge and thank all the bridge builders—those people committed to getting down to work in the ravines with the primary purpose of raising up everybody else.

That’s my outlook.

FAMILY & LIFESTYLES Are you carrying the ‘mental load’ in your relationship The mental load refers to all the thinking, planning and organizing you need to do to manage your life and that of those dependent on you. Unfortunately, it’s a burden that falls disproportionately on the shoulders of women in many relationships.

The burden of remembering Carrying the mental load involves more than doing chores. It also includes the responsibility of remembering and delegating the various tasks that need to be completed. Depending on the household, this can range from plan-

ning meals and scheduling appointments to making sure your kids don’t need new clothes and that you’re not about to run out of toilet paper.

If the mental load isn’t shared equally in a relationship, one person takes on the additional responsibility of reminding their partner to complete chores or keep tabs on the state of the household.

How to share the load One way to determine how much of the mental load you carry is to write up a list of the tasks you complete during the day and throughout the week.

This list should include all planning, delegating and organizing. Ask your partner to create their own list and then compare it with yours. This exercise can help underscore what tasks are required to manage a household and reveal whether one person is taking on more responsibility than the other.

It’s not always easy to broach the subject of mental load in a relationship, but if both partners are open-minded and willing to make changes, the burden of remembering can be distributed more equally.

Lavender species Not all lavender species have the same purported medicinal properties. True lavender, also known as English lavender, is thought to have a calming effect, while lavender aspic tends to be better at treating burns.

I’m sorry, I missed another Grade 12 grad – Dusty Bonner is also graduating from Oxbow Prairie Horizon School this year. Thank goodness for the pictures in the paper I noticed his picture among the graduates. That makes three grads from our area that is graduating this year – Dusty Bonner, Faith Peet and Madison Smith – Congratulations and Best Wishes to you all as you continue on your new road of adventure.

Visiting with Kris Potapinski, Melissa Sauer and baby Carson over the weekend (July 26-28) was her mother from Regina. She helped to celebrate Melissa’s birthday on Sunday – Happy Birthday Melissa and many more happy ones to come.

Gray Cowan (VE5GC) was accompanied by Murray MacFarlane (VE5 XO) of Glen Ewen on June 27 when they travelled to Weyburn to spend the day with Todd Bendtsen (VE5 MX) where they participated in the annual Amateur Radio Field Day. Field day is an annual operating event for amateur (ham) radio operators in North America where the radio operators usually operate from locations other than home stations with portable equipment, but they can also operate from home stations. The idea of the event is to contact as many other amateur stations in North America in the 24-hour allotted period as possible, and of course to attempt to win the contest.

Field day also demonstrates to the public the capabilities of amateur radio in the need for emergency communication. Although field day isn’t really considered a contest so to speak, it is very competitive with all groups trying to get the best score in their category in the event. Gray and Murray returned home later that evening and left Todd to man the radios to the end of the field day meet which was Sunday at noon. The total number of contacts that the guys made at the event were 2,353, a very impressive score. Way to go guys.

The Alida Rec. Board has made their decision to open the Alida Comunity Swimming Pool this summer with COVID-19 restrictions which includes: 1) Children should be accompanied by an adult to en-

sure physical distancing compliance. 2) The Change rooms will be closed – the public should enter and exit in their swim clothes. 3) Food concession will not be available. The opening day for the Pool is July 2 operating from 1:00 – 6:00 pm daily, except for Thursday when it will remain open until 8:00 pm.

Swimming Lessons are scheduled to be held for three different weekly sessions in July (beginning on the 13th) with limited class size due to Covid-19 guidelines. For further information and to register contact Cheryl at 306-452-7098. Enjoy your summer days at the pool.

Maryfield Villa News Submitted by Janet Mark Hurrah! We are still in Lockdown, but our staggered meals are over. This is much easier for the staff to keep food hot and fresh. We have new seatmates to bring us new topics of conversation. Thank you, Angela and your Angels.

We held another joyous hymnsing with Mary Thiessen in the courtyard; and tonight we expect Keith Olson and Garry Dixon. You will hear that sax all over town.

The courtyard was part of the Maryfield School Graduation. Some of the residents sat outside to welcome them. We cold blooded ones watched from inside as the grads and their escorts introduced themselves; and had their pictures taken. This year they celebrated with a Victory Parade of cars, much like that for the 100th Birthday. (Again, we forgot to count the cars). Dillon Penner was the grad who helps decorate the courtyard for Christmas. Our very best wishes to all you young people.

Wawota News Submitted by Myrna Olson Bonnie Bogner of Regina spent a few days with her mother, Jean Bogner recently.

Congratulations to Jane Doull who retired as of June 28. She was the minister at the Wawota United Church from 1997-2002. Wawota was her second charge after spending some time at Wadena. She moved to Wallace, NS, then to Sackville, NB and has spent the last 10 years at St. Andrews, NB. She will remain there in her retirement. As a side note Sally Bullas, another former minister at the Wawota United Church retired at Gabriola, BC last June.

Some people take great offense at the expression, “Black lives Matter!” By saying that no one is insinuating that other lives don’t matter. After the horrific bus crash at Humboldt we used the term, “Humboldt strong!”, but we didn’t mean other cities weren’t strong. Raising money for breast cancer doesn’t mean that other cancers aren’t important. At this time the emphasis is on Black lives due to the way they have been treated so poorly for many years.

Joe and Jean Brisbois spent last weekend visiting with their son, Clinton and Kelly in Winnipeg.

Sympathy to the family of the late Jim Burke who passed away on June 22 at the age of 88 years old. Family members in this area are sister Joan Colborn(DVL) sister, Isobel Robinson, Moosomin, brother, Ralph Burke at Maryfield Villa and other family members.

Sympathy also to Jean Bogner and other family and friends of the late Joan (Bogner) Stitt of Brandon. She passed away on June 23 at the age of 86 years.

As we grow older we have to cope with the passing of family members and good friends. By talking about them and sharing the memories we have of them keeps them close.

Wawota Parkland Grad is in the books. A parade was held on Saturday with a gathering at the Village Inn. Awards and grad exercises were carried on Zoom. Golf Kenosee takes senior Ryder Cup title

By Kelly Johnson The Observer The Golf Kenosee Senior Ryder Cup team came to play on the second day of the Ryder Cup Challenge against their foes from the White Bear Golf Course in the second annual team event.

White Bear had the lead after day one with 6.5 points to Kenosee’s 5.5 points. Day one was golfed on Monday, June 22 at the White Bear course.

With only one point difference after day one it was within either team’s sights to take victory the second day.

The second day was golfed at Golf Kenosee on June 25 and consisted of twelve matches, each worth one point of individual match play.

Both sides got off to a quick start with several players taking early leads on both teams.

With Kenosee playing on their home course, the team soon took full advantage of the friendly confines and led most matches after nine holes.

The White Bear team was in for it tough, unable to get control back in enough of the matches to make it a close finish. Kenosee was even able to take the lead in some of the matches that Team White Bear was leading in after nine holes.

The outcome was apparent early as Team Kenosee took points in the first four matches led by 2019 Club Champion Jim Walker and Doug Rintoul, who was down early but came back to take the point in his match.

Next in, adding to the point total were Pat Coffey and Ken Ferguson, winning their matches on holes 14 and 16 respectively, putting White Bear down three points with eight matches to come. White Bear needed 5.5 points in the ongoing matches to retain the title.

This day was all Kenosee’s with notables Paul Grimes and Garnet Currie taking points, as well as Hugh Quigley, Gord West and Tim Amundrud winning their matches. Gord Jarvis was able to win his match, as did Rod Nieviadomy for points and Gord Paulley sawed off the veteran Gerry Kuzick, gaining

Garth Brooks lived up to his billing of a country music superstar, entertaining a capacity crowd at the Prairie Dog Drive-In Theatre on June 27.

By Kelly Johnson The Observer On the eve of Saturday, June 27 country music fans were treated to a once in a lifetime concert at the Prairie Dog Drive-In Theatre located north of Carlyle, when country superstar Garth Brooks performed a live show streamed on the big screen.

The concert, which entertained the capacity

crowd at the Prairie Dog, was shown at 300 drivein theatres across North America.

Tickets were all presold for the event and were priced at $100.00 US funds, which worked out to approximately $136 Canadian. Tickets were sold through Ticket Master and sold out in two days for the show at Carlyle.

Each vehicle was limited to six occupants or as many people as the vehicle had seatbelts for. Garda Security was contracted to monitor the venue and provided

security for the event.

All physical distancing recommendations were to be strictly adhered to by the concert attendees and each vehicle was required to be distanced to a minimum of one vehicle to what would be normally two spaces under a regular pre-pandemic night.

For an added touch to the evening, the Boutin cousins, known as Two Blondes and Two Brunettes, played a few songs to the pleasure of the crowd.

Ingenious patrons had brought along lawn

chairs and set up in the boxes of their “bigrigs” backed up towards the screen.

Also to the delight of the crowd was the releasing of memorial lanterns bringing cheers and horn honking from those attending.

The loudest cheers and sustained blasting of horns came for the star of the show Garth Brooks, who entertained for around 90 minutes, sending the country music fans home with a special memory of the successfully improvised evening concert.

Red Market Barn postpones opening

By Kelly Johnson The Observer The Red Market Barn located a few miles north of Kenosee Lake was planning to hold its first farmer’s market of the season on Sunday, June 28, but had to delay opening for one week due to inclement weather and COVID-19 concerns.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, physical distancing guidelines could have been compromised had the expected crowd needed to gather for shelter inside the Red Barn because of the weather that day.

Having had to change things up in several ways to be able to open, owner’s Harold and Brenda Johnston felt that it would be best to wait it out and open the following Sunday.

At present the Johnstons have had to remove all picnic benches, cancel live music that they had booked and keep closed the sandboxes and swings that were provided to entertain children, which do not fall under the province’s guidelines for opening. It would difficult to be within the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s protocols.

The Johnstons are eager to open July 5 and look forward to reacquaint with friends and vendors who have been coming since they first opened. “We are a summer business. This is the people’s entertainment and livelihood and we are hoping to get back to being open as we were before,” Mr. Johnston stated.

Uplifting zucchini

By Linda Wegner Yesterday morning a neighbour brought me a freshly picked zucchini, the first one we’ve had this season. That act of kindness got me thinking about the power of this oft-maligned vegetable. First, if ever there was a prolific garden vegetable, it’s got to be zucchini. Even one or two plants can become nearly overwhelming, so much so that I stopped growing them a few years back. Boasting their beautiful yellow blossoms, they seem to pop out of the green growth, ten at a time.

Then, they are not quite as insignificant as they may seem. In researching a bit, I found this definition: ‘[zucchini] a type of botanical berry called a “pepo”, being the swollen ovary

of the zucchini flower.’ Who would have thought about the internal origin of these bland veggies?

Sometimes, though, zucchinis are not valued highly enough for the nutrition and the taste they bring to everyday eating. They form part of a delicious casserole and there’s not a lot of things tastier than a zucchini dessert loaf on a winter’s day.

But lest you think I’ve lost my focus as to the purpose of my articles, what I really thought about when Sue handed me that gourd was how it compares with the power of encouraging words. Often without even realizing it, simple words of reassurance can brighten a day, lift a heavy load or season a time of pain

with love-inspired hope.

Oxbow Chase the Ace prizes stayed local

By Ana Bykhovskaia Estevan Mercury Both the Oxbow Chase the Ace weekly pot and the final jackpot were won by Oxbow residents. The final Oxbow and District Recreation Board’s game draw was made on June 17.

The board was able to raise about $40,000 since September 2019 and they were pretty happy with how the game went.

“It was very exciting. It was a fun ending to the game. Both of the winners are right from Oxbow. That’s exciting for local people,” said Oxbow community development officer Tami Scott.

By the final week, there were 26 cards left in the deck, but it only took two tries to catch the ace.

Phyllis Morrow, whose ticket was drawn first, won over $4,700 but came short of drawing the ace of spades.

It was the last draw that Oxbow and District Recreation Board could have, so the jackpot had to go that day. Ellie Hook’s ticket was drawn next and she became the winner of the game, and claimed over $23,000 for the jackpot.

“I was very excited and happy. Never expected it,” Hook said.

“It just all happened so quickly. Another woman had been drawn first … and when I heard her name drawn, I thought, ‘She is such a nice lady, I’m glad she is winning it.’ And when she didn’t get it, I never guessed that it would be me, so it was lovely.”

Hook’s been participating in the game since the beginning, but she never could foresee winning anything, let alone such a significant prize.

“I won $500 about 40 years ago, but that was all,” said Hook.

She was watching the draw live along with her husband, and other family members were following it at their homes, so the phone went ringing immediately when her name was drawn.

Hook pointed out that “luckily it wasn’t very long” until everybody watching got to know the results, and she also was pretty happy that Ian Scott, who was helping with the game, made the choice for her.

“I was really glad that he pulled the card because if I had to pull the card and it was the wrong card, I’d had been (blaming) myself. And I wouldn’t have been mad at him if he didn’t pull the right card. But it was a relief that someone else did,” Hook said.

“The recreation board that does this, I’d like to compliment them on all the work they did to help with recreation in Oxbow,” Hook said.

Once the pandemic hit, Oxbow Chase the Ace had to go online, and it turned into great entertainment that drew participants from all across the southeast and from as far away as Yorkton and Prince Albert, allowing the prize to grow significantly.

The last game that was aired on Facebook attracted over 1,000 viewers.

After the final draw, the Oxbow and District Recreation Board came together to decide on their near future plans and also on how the funds will be used.

James Harvey Porter 1933 - 2020

James Harvey Porter was born on July 16, 1933 to J. Ernest Porter and Ruby E. (McGhie) Porter in Winnipeg, MB. Harvey’s childhood was spent on the family homestead in Southeast Saskatchewan’s Hope District, until the family moved to Glen Ewen when Harvey was 11. He was the oldest brother in a large family with 13 siblings.

As a young man, Harvey enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces, joining Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians). He trained to drive the tanks at Camp Borden’s Armoured Corps School, and memories of this time always brought a smile to his face. The “Straths” contributed troops to the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in Germany from 1957 to 1959, and our small-town brother was sent across the ocean to experience the wonders of post-war Europe.

On breaks from their peace-keeping mission, he and a friend toured the great cities of Europe, passing the historic domes and cathedrals under repair after the devastation of war.

Harvey returned to Canada in the early 1960s with the rank of Lance-Corporal. He worked for Arne Hansen in Glen Ewen for several years. In the 1970s he moved to Esterhazy, SK and drove the Kleysen Transport potash haul for 20 years, retiring at 57 years old.

Harvey was involved with the Esterhazy Flour Mill project and the Qu’Appelle Valley Thresherman’s Club, where he enjoyed fixing and fiddling with old machinery. Attending auction sales and meeting friends for (not hot) coffee made him happy in his own quiet way.

Harvey passed away at his home on June 15, 2020.

He will be remembered as a quiet, gentle man with a soft voice and sense of humour. He was a good brother, and generous with his time and abilities. We will miss him for all of these things.

Manor celebrates graduation Submitted On June 12, the graduating class of Manor celebrated their graduation in a unique way. Staff at Manor school organized and put together a PowerPoint of the graduating class.

The PowerPoint included video taped speeches and a display of pictures of the graduates. Speeches from a variety of people were included within the PowerPoint presentation.

Garth Herman was the guest speaker this year, giving his tribute to the graduates through video presentation. The tradition of Last Will and Testament for the grade 11’s and class predictions for the Grade 12’s continued this year.

Micheline Biermann presented the valedictorian address to her fellow graduates. Banners of the graduates were displayed along the edge of town for the community members to see. The graduates and parents organized a parade around town to display the graduates in front of the community members.

Manor School would like to congratulate Micheline Biermann for receiving The Manor School Staff Scholarship, The Moose Mountain Wildlife Federation, The Village of Manor Mentorship Award, and the South East Cornerstone School Division Scholarship. Manor School would also like to congratulate Kiera Richardson for receiving The Anderson Family Bursary. For outstanding scholastic achievements in 2019, Kyle Bye received the Governor General Award. Congratulations Kyle.
