The Moon is in new phase on the 1st, so won’t be visible until a day or two later. On the 9th, Jupiter is a couple of degrees away to the south, while Saturn cuddles up on the 12th, an occultation for South Paci�ic viewers. Pluto is also occulted in the Southern Hemisphere on the 12th. This would seem to be a very dif�icult observation, but an experienced observer would locate the tiny object a few nights before to know which one would glide behind the Moon. This is just about the only way an amateur astronomer can sight Pluto, by observing for a few nights in a row,

then detecting which “star” has moved against the backdrop. It can be done, but with dif�iculty. The Moon is full on the15th. By the 21st, Uranus is 5 degrees north of the waning gibbous Moon, “gibbous” meaning humped, like a camel’s back. On the 28th, the Moon glides through the stars of the Beehive Cluster (M44).

Jupiter has been retrograding since April, and reaches its stationary point on the 11th, to begin prograde motion thereafter. Watch for the nearby Moon on the 9th.

Saturn is prominent in the evening sky, crossing from east to west all through the night. The Moon shares the spotlight on the 12th, in a very close conjunction of 0.04 degrees.

Uranus, in prograde motion, reaches its stationary point on August 12, to begin retrograde motion for a few months.

Neptune appears in mid-evening, retrograding in Aquarius.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks annually on August 12, near midnight.

Cowboys rope and wrangle at rodeo in Kennedy

It’s boots and chaps It’s cowboy hats It’s the ropes and the reins And the joy and the pain And they call the thing rodeo.

The Village of Kennedy became a large campground this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday with all the campers and horse trailers pulling in for the big rodeo weekend. This was the 87th Annual Rodeo for the Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo. The two day event was attended once again by many spectators of all ages. Competitors came from all across Canada, mainly from Alberta, some up from the states, as well as a few from quite close to home.

The weekend kicked off with a parade on Main Street featuring horses, decorated �loats, �ire trucks and more.

Throughout the two days there were kids bouncers, trade show, food booths, beer gardens and the ever popular mini donuts.

The Demolition Derby was held both Saturday and Sunday.

Following the Grand Entry on Saturday, the Lawrence family gathered in the arena to be by Jim’s side as the Rodeo Legend himself was honoured as the Canadian Pro-Rodeo Hall of Fame’s 2019 Legend inductee.

Jimmy Lawrence, who quali�ied for the CFR 6 times, was Reserve Canadian Bull Riding Champion 1989, and CPRA Cowboy of the Year in 1991.

These are just a few of this man’s accomplishments. His rodeo career has spanned 30+ years, 12 as a rider and more under the stock contractor name: Prime Time Rodeo. Jim and his family who ranch just outside of Kennedy have raised winning bucking stock such as Mucho Dinero now owned by Wayne Vold.

The Moose Mountain Rodeo Association con-

gratulated Jim Lawrence on his rodeo achievements and thanked him for all the time and effort he has dedicated not to just the MMPR but all the rodeos he has partnered with.

Sue Cummins, who passed away last October, was also recognized as being a long-time member and supporter of the Moose Mountain Rodeo.

After moving to the community she embraced the farm life and became a big part of her community. Sue helped out at the rodeos, working into her 80’s at the pancake breakfasts.

Newly added this year featured a Pet Costume Class for the kids. There was everything from decorated horses and riders as well, to pet dogs and a rabbit.

The rodeo began at 5:00 pm on Saturday and again at 2:00 pm on Sunday with Tim Edge as rodeo announcer while the rodeo stock was provided by Big Stone Rodeo.

Many of these cowboys taking part in the rodeo are following in their father’s footsteps whether it’s riding the bulls or ropin’ the calves.

The ever popular Wild Pony Rides served as the ‘�inale’ on both Saturday and Sunday shows.

And it was not only the kids getting involved. To the audience’s delight even the ‘big kids’ entertained the crowd as they tried to ride the wild ponies. They may have been left with a few bruises!

“Roughly 3000 came through the gates over the weekend,” says Tye Cancade, president of the Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo committee.

Spectators came from all over. “We had people from Sweden, BC, and Nova Scotia,” explains Cancade and adds “We usually have a few come up from the states as well.”

“It’s hard to say right now what plans we have for the pro�it from this year’s rodeo until all our

books are completed but as always we hope we have money to be able to put back into our surrounding communities and to be able to do some arena upgrades,” explains Cancade.

The beer gardens at the rodeo grounds was updated recently. Cancade comments on future improvements “We have a list of stuff we would like to do over the next few years. Hopefully get the arena dirt redone and a new food booth would be great as well.”

Cancade, president of the Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo committee, comments on how he feels this year’s rodeo went, “We were very pleased with this year’s event! Everything ran smooth. We only had a couple minor injuries.

The crowd was great and as always our sponsors and volunteers de�initely stepped up for us.”

What would you suggest to a newcomer if they’ve never been to a Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo before?

“Be ready to be shocked that such a small town can put on such a huge professional event!” comments Cancade. “I know of 20 people from the east coast that came this year and was their �irst rodeo and couldn’t explain how excited and thrilled they were to see something like this.”

Canada versus Philippines for Fireworks Competition August long weekend at Moosomin Lake

By Kevin Weedmark Moosomin Spectator Organizers are counting down the days until the 2019 Living Skies Come Alive Fireworks Competition August 3 and 4 at Moosomin Lake.

Every August long weekend, the skies come alive over Moosomin Lake. For the last several years the Living Skies Come Alive Fireworks Competition has pitted two �ireworks companies against one another.

Each competitor puts on their best show—one on Saturday night, one on Sunday night—and a panel of judges selects the winner.

The �ireworks shows are unlike anything else on the Prairies. Timed to music and carefully choreographed, the �ireworks shows are a different calibre of show than anything else on the Prairies. The �ireworks are shot off across the lake from the main beach, so they are re�lected in the water of Moosomin Lake.

The �ireworks weekend has grown over the years, with thousands of people taking in the shows each night.

The two-day �ireworks competition long pitted Saskatchewan against Manitoba, but for the last two years it has gone international, as Canada took on China and the United States over the last two years.

It will be Canada versus the Philippines at the 2019 Living Skies Come Alive International Fireworks Competition at Moosomin Regional Park August 3 and 4.

Moosomin, Esterhazy Filipino communities involved

The Moosomin and Esterhazy Filipino communities will be involved in the weekend, serving Filipino food and performing.

“We will have a cultural presentation,” said Leo Ilustrisimo, a member of Moosomin’s Filipino community. “We will be performing 4-5 pm on the Sunday, the day the Philippines will be doing the �ireworks.

We will have a food booth both days, Saturday and Sunday, with the help of the Esterhazy Filipino community.”

He said members of the local Filipino community are excited about taking part in the weekend.

“Everybody is really excited, not just here in Moosomin but in all the towns around,” he said. “It will be something new for everyone. They want to see what the Filipino �ireworks team can do. We have been talking to a few Filipino communities from surrounding towns and they are really excited about it.

“We’re setting up a tent and will be playing a video on a big-screen TV all about the Philippines so people can learn more about the Philippines. It will be set up close to the food booth.”

Ilustrisimo said he is looking forward to the �ireworks weekend. “We were busy with the Philippines National Heritage Month, and then getting ready for the parade weekend (the local Filipino community participates in Moosomin’s Chamber of Commerce Parade and in a Multicultural Celebration on the Moosomin Rodeo weekend). Now that the rodeo weekend is over we are already in preparation for the �ireworks weekend. We’re going to be busy preparing for the show the next few weeks. It’s going to be something else. We’re really happy that the committee chose a team from the Philippines to participate. It’s exciting.”

Organizers excited to host the Philippines

“We’re really excited about having the Philippines come this year,” says Laurie Renneberg of the organizing committee. Layne McFarlane, another member of the committee, said he hopes members of the Filipino community across the Prairies come out to see the Canada vs. Philippines competition. “The Filipino community is really quite large between Winnipeg and Regina. We hope a lot of them come out,” he says.

The organizers are hoping to replicate the excitement of the Canada vs China competition two years ago with the competition with the Philippines. “There was a lot of excitement with China coming, not quite as much with the States because they’re maybe too familiar,” said Renneberg. “I think the Philippines will create that same level of excitement we had with China again.”

The weekend also includes music both nights.

This year, the live bands are Stuck on Red and The Firm from Langenburg.

The �ireworks weekend has become a very successful fundraiser for Moosomin Regional Park. “Last year it raised a little over $100,000,” says McFarlane.

“The year before that, with China, it was $130,000.

So it’s huge, but at the same time, our overhead cost going into it is like $130,000, so most of all you hope for good weather. I feel a little like a farmer—the costs of the �ireworks and the entertainment coming in and the security and the porta-potties and the tents for the beer gardens are committed costs. You’ve put everything on the line, and you see how it goes. Have we been fortunate? Yes, we’ve been fortunate with the weather each year.

The organizers are hopeful they will get a good crowd again this year. The Canada vs. U.S. weekend attracted 9,500 spectators and the Canada vs. China weekend attracted 12,500.

“We have a cap of 7,000 tickets a night,” says Renneberg. “We’re hoping with the Philippines it will have that international draw like we had with China.”

She says she is looking forward to the August long weekend. “I am truly looking forward to it, because our Filipino community has been so involved in our community, and this is like we’re giving something back to them by having the Philippines come.”

“Having the Philippines come is really special because of the community both locally and regionally,” adds McFarlane. “This should be special for them.”

Artist Colony houses a rare Saskatchewan talent

By Mary Moffat Ken Frederickson of Wawota spent over 30 years as a professional photographer of rodeos, ranching and wildlife, and did very well with it. His almost photographic memory helped him know when he had the perfect shot, where to �ind that shot at a later date in the photo archive and helped him when he began exploring his passion for carving.

One September day four years ago, he was sharing Moose Mountain Provincial Park with about six other campers, talking with his wife as he worked on a piece of sculpture. Frederickson had already completed a piece he had entitled “Bear Soul” and was in the middle of a piece that featured two eagles �ighting over one �ish. The piece was quite large and the birds had a wingspan of over 32 inches each.

His wife was asking him when he was going to cast his �irst sculpture, where they would do it and how they would �ind the money. Casting a sculpture in bronze is very expensive, not only because of the cost of the entire process but also because most foundries want you to do 10 pours in order to justify the cost of the mold.

For a �irst timer that cost was prohibitive when you had no customers lined up. As they discussed the pros and cons a gentleman walked into the campsite and said he thought he should introduce himself to fellow artist, especially a sculptor, since he was also one and there were so few of them around. The gentleman’s name was Rich Loef�ler, and before he left the campsite, he had invited Ken to cast his sculpture in an art foundry in Montana where he was part of a stable of artists. Loef�ler mad all the calls and arrangements and when Ken showed

up with his sculpture of “Bear Soul”, the owner of the Foundry was so impressed with the work of art that he offered to let Ken do a single pour of the mold if he wished to. Bear Soul was cast in November and in March he got the �inished sculpture back. His wife was on the board of Sunrise Community Futures and they travelled to the Canadian Convention north of Quebec City where the keynote speaker was Ovide Mercredi, past National Chief, Assembly of First Nations, lawyer, politician and author. During a chance meeting after the speech, Frederickson asked Mercredi if he would critique a piece of sculpture. He shared photographs of Bear Soul and Mercredi loved it. He sent a text to Ken’s wife saying “You have an incredible gift of art that should be shared with the world”.

He was so impressed with Frederickson’s talent that he invited him to attend the Assiniboia Art Retreat. Part of the retreat was the opportunity to display one piece for a month at the Shurniak Art Gallery, and the only complete piece of work was Bear Soul.

When he carried it into the gallery he was asked “Where have you been hiding your whole life?”, to which he replied “Not hiding, just busy doing other things.”. Shurniak told him that he wanted to host his �irst show.

Frederickson continued to sculpt and on October 1, 2017 he held his �irst show at the Shurniak Art Gallery in Assiniboia SK with Ovide Mercredi. Mercredi wrote poems to accompany the sculptures and Frederickson created sculptures to go with some of Mercredi’s poems.

Immediately following the show, Frederickson travelled to Calgary where he submitted 5 pieces to the Calgary Stampede. With

over 300 pieces submitted, he was thrilled to have one selected to be presented as a trophy for the Stampede. The selection meant seven castings would be done, the �irst to be part of the permanent Calgary Stampede art collection, the second to the corporate sponsor of the event, and one presented to the winner for the next 5 years. Since then he has created over.

“Fly Fishing”, the one he was working on in the campsite, has become part of the permanent collection at the Shurniak Art Gallery, amongst such famous artists as the Group of Seven.

Another one that has great signi�icance was commissioned for Ray Kneeland of Saskatoon.

It is a bronze of Ray riding his favourite horse “Dice. This meant a lot because the horse had been purchased from Frederickson’s father and he knows that when the time comes Kneeland will be able to carry that horse into the nursing home with him and enjoy it and the memories every day.

Frederickson is self taught and he sculpts in petroleum wax or oilbased clay. Once a piece is sculpted it is covered in rubber to form a mold, which is then used to make a wax replica. That replica is then covered with a ceramic slurry and �ine sand is blown onto it, repeating the process over and over until it forms a ceramic shell. The shell is placed in a kiln and �ired, the lost wax melting out of the inside. The shell is �illed with molten bronze at a temperature of 2100 degree Fahrenheit and when it has cooled the ceramic shell is broken, leaving the raw bronze.

Anything that sticks out from the main piece is made in a separate mold, so multiple molds are cast and then everything is welded together and �inished with a patina,

Each piece is unique, despite using the same mold, because the patina is hand painted. Each piece is created from memory, and chosen because it interests him, gives him full license to design it his way and is one that he can sell more than one casting of.

Frederickson has been a part of the Assiniboia art retreat every year since his �irst visit and the group lay claim to him as an artist. The Kenosee Lake Art Colony invited him to be a permanent artist 3 years ago and Frederickson takes full advantage of the peace and inspiration to be found there.

He has many pieces on display and welcomes visitors. Frederickson is part of an art retreat at the Mother Teresa Centre in late August, attended by approximately 22 artists from two or three provinces. The retreat is followed by an exhibition held in the Recreation Hall. This year the exhibition will be held August 29 and the public is invited to attend.

VEGETARIAN OPTIONS for your next barbecue

Do you think cooking on the barbecue is reserved for meat eaters? Think again!

Here are some easy ways of making your next cookout vegetarian-friendly.

Side dishes Meat eaters and vegetarians alike will appreciate having grilled vegetables to accompany their main dish. Zucchini and eggplant are delicious when cut lengthwise, seasoned and cooked on an oiled grill.

If you prefer to cook an assortment of veggies, cut them into even-sized cubes and season them as desired. Once they’re ready to be cooked, wrap them in a piece of aluminum foil and place them on the barbecue to be steamed.

Main courses There are vegetarian substitutes for almost all grilled meat dishes. For example, as an alternative to hamburgers you can buy pre-made veggie burgers or try your hand at making your own. A great replacement for ground beef is a mix of black beans and tempeh (a product made from fermented soybeans).

If you’re serving brochettes, replace the meat with more vegetables or with chunks of marinated tofu.

Remember that many vegetarians prefer that their food not come into contact with meat, so a clean grill is recommended. When cooking meat and non-meat dishes, cook the vegetarian items �irst or simply dedicate a portion of the grill to plantbased food.
