Business showcase of the week - Performance Realty

By Kelly Johnson The Observer/Summer Times Each week, up to September long weekend, Summer Times will “randomly” choose a business in the area to showcase. Unfortunately we can’t showcase all businessess in this time period.

Performance Realty is situated on Main Street in Carlyle and is owned and operated by Ray Boutin.

The business started up in the 1990’s and was originally known as Kenosee Lake Properties. In 2008 it became known as Performance Realty under the guidance of Merrill Renaud.

Boutin worked for Renaud during that time as a fully licensed farm, residential and commercial realtor.

Boutin began his real estate career with Andrew Agencies before taking ownership of Performance Realty in 2014.

Performance Realty is a full service brokerage licensed in residential, farm and commercial real estate transactions. Each area is unique, providing interesting and challenging opportunities as a Real Estate Broker. Currently Boutin has added some new associates located in Redvers and Kipling and soon will add a new associate to the of�ice in Carlyle.

Boutin also operates the Prairie Dog Drivein Theatre with his wife Frances and daughters Simone and Janelle. They reside on their acreage adjacent to the theatre near Carlyle.

Tourist of the Week

Michael Dumba has found his favourite spot to camp at Fish Creek in Moose Mountain Provincial Park.

The spot is close to his home of Estevan, making that an added convenience.

By Kelly Johnson The Observer/Summer Times Camping at Fish Creek Campground in Moose Mountain Provincial Park from Estevan, SK was Michael Dumba. Dumba is camping with his parents, sister, brother-in law, and nine-month-old nephew (who is on his �irst camping trip).

They also have three dogs which are of an appropriate size to keep any marauding squirrels at bay.

The home away from home is a �ifth wheel with a screened and a dog enclosure. They are equipped with a barbeque for outdoor cooking for food that cannot be prepared over the camp�ire. Hotdogs and hamburgers are the regular fare for the picnic table, but at the time of this interview it was steaks on the grill for Father’s Day. The family camps each year at Kenosee, making it a Father’s Day tradition. Dumba enjoys camping at Kenosee Lake whenever given the opportunity. He has also camped at Wolseley at Circle Square and Kedleston Gospel Camp on Last Mountain.

They have hopes to camp at Banff and Jasper to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Rockies. Those plans have been put on hold this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and plan to make it there next summer.

While camping on this occasion, Dumba plans on �ishing, going to the beach, taking nature walks and a visit to the ice cream stand at Allison’s Store. Dumba �irst camped at Fish Creek a few years ago and fell in love with the place, commenting, “It’s a very beautiful attraction and I would highly recommend it to anyone.”

He also suggests that Circle Square Camp by Wolseley is a great place to take the kids to enjoy a holiday.

The family is camping for one week and hope to make it back to camp again in August. Dumba especially appreciates the staff at the Moose Mountain Provincial Park in helping make it his favourite camping destination.

How to organize a backyard summer bash From picnics by the pool to barbecues and corn roasts, outdoor summer parties are a highlight of the season. If you’re planning your own event, you’ll need to prepare for it. Here are a few steps to follow when hosting an outdoor gathering.

Set the mood Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or hosting a casual event, decorations can help set the right mood. Balloons, streamers, paper lanterns, �loral arrangements, tiki torches and lawn ornaments can all be used to good effect. Additionally, be sure to provide suf�icient seating for your guests. If you plan to keep the party going after sunset, stairs and walkways should be well lit with lanterns or string lights.

Plan activities It’s a good idea to provide entertainment for adult guests and their children. This can include setting up a bubble station, a bean bag toss, a horseshoe pit, a volleyball net or buckets of water balloons. A camp�ire is a great way to wrap up the evening, especially if some of your guests are willing to bring a musical instrument like a guitar, ukulele or harmonica.

Prepare the food Once you’ve decided on a menu, make sure you have the means to keep the food you want to serve at the right temperature. You’ll need a cooler for drinks and a slow cooker or warming tray for dishes best enjoyed hot. Place vegetable platters and salads over ice to keep them chilled.

Check the weather Rent a few umbrellas or a party tent. This way you can offer shade if it’s sunny and shelter if it rains. In�latable kiddie pools will help keep your guests comfortable on a hot day, and patio heaters are ideal for a cool evening. You should also securely fasten tablecloths and decorations in case it gets windy.

Finally, remember to be courteous and invite your neighbours to join the fun. They’re less likely to be disturbed by your event if they’re guests.

The government has announced that tee times can now go to 10 minutes.

We will change to 10 minutes starting July 3. Shotgun starts are still not allowed. We are still only allowing bookings one week in advance.

We are starting to have meals as an option for Men’s and Ladies nights. There are specials or you can order off the menu. We still need to follow social distancing rules and can’t have groups larger than 6.

Cart shed members if you are out late can you please shut the doors. Just push enter and they will close. The Pro Shop staff is trying to close them but often you are out later than we are open so we don’t always close the door.

Golfer of the week

By Kelly Johnson The Observer/Summer Times A l l a n a h Wo l l n e r makes a living at the golf course, working as the �inance manager at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course in Estevan, SK. She has held the position for two years and in order to do the job well you need to have game.

She is meeting the needs of the job in every capacity and as anyone that has worked at a golf course would tell you, it kind of comes with the territory.

Previously Wollner only golfed a couple times a year and now enjoys playing alongside the general manager and head professional at Woodlawn, Amanda Minchin. Wollner

is encouraged by Minchin, who feels Wollner’s game is steadily improving. Is a well-known entity on the Saskatchewan Golf circuit, Minchin was named 2015 PGA of Saskatchewan Teacher of the Year.

Wollner likes Ping clubs and her favourite club is her driver. She has played rounds at local courses including Mainprize, White Bear and Hidden Valley and has had the pleasure of playing the very scenic Kananaskis course in the Alberta Rockies.

Being a �inance manager at a golf course, Wollner’s best round is a very honest 48 on nine holes.

She has never had a holein-one, her closest brush with that achievement was coming within 12

feet. She now manages to hit the green quite often and her favourite hole is the Par 3, Number 8 at her favourite course which is, (you guessed it), The TS&M Woodlawn Course.

Wollner has played eight rounds to date this year and recorded her �irst ever birdie a couple of rounds ago.

Wollner’s mission is to golf as many courses as she can. Her dream golf destination would be the California coast, with aspirations to play Pebble Beach and/or Torrey Pines.

She recommends that golfers should experience the Woodlawn course, which is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year.

Oxbow swimming pool is getting ready to open

By Ana Bykhovskaia The Estevan Mercury Oxbow will be opening its outdoor pool soon.

With Phase 4.1 of the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan now underway, the outdoor pools are allowed to get back to operating while following the regulations.

However, when the good news came, most facilities weren’t ready to open instantly.

“We are at the point where we are �illing the pool right now. That’s a good head start because it takes a few days to do that,” said Oxbow community development of�icer Tami Scott last Thursday.

“But there are quite a few guidelines around what we can have open in the pool building. For example, the change rooms won’t be open, so the people will have to come to the pool dressed in their bathing suits, they won’t be able to change.”

They are limiting the change room access as much as possible. There are also a few decisions that have to be made around swimming lessons.

“We have to maintain social distancing during swimming lessons. The instructors can’t get in the water with the swimmers and help them out. So for younger swimmers, if we do decide to go ahead, it would be parents-assisted. That’s a new and unusual step,” said Scott.

The areas around the pool will have to be regularly sanitized. Swimming aids will have to be wiped down after every single use, which will impact the number of staff they’ll have to have on duty.

The Town of Oxbow is still working on regulations to make sure that they are covering all of them and have all of them in place before the public health inspector comes out to issue a licence.

“Depending on when we can get the public health inspector out, we are aiming for the July 3 opening, but it won’t be before that,” said Scott.

She added that if not for the pandemic, their season would be about two weeks longer with the pool opening in the middle of June.

“It’s not cut short as much as you might think,” said Scott.

Outdoor pools are seasonal, they take quite a bit of money to run but don’t make much. So places that run them usually come up short on budgets, and fundraisers are a big part of their sustainable operation.

“Fundraisers are a huge factor in keeping pools in the black,” said Scott.

“One big fundraiser that we usually run to support the swimming pool is Lobster Fest, and that would have been held this (past) weekend. And of

course, that’s cancelled because of COVID.” The cancellation of the big fundraiser signi�icantly impacted them, but since the Oxbow swimming pool opened just last summer, they didn’t want to lose a year right away and decided to go ahead this year despite all the challenges.

“We have enough money in savings to offset what will be for sure a de�icit year,” said Scott.

Prosciutto, fig and goat cheese crostini

If you want a simple yet sophisticated starter to serve at your next dinner party, look no further than this classic Italian appetizer. Your guests are sure to love the pairing of salty prosciutto with the sweetness of �igs.

Start to �inish: 15 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients • 4 slices Ezekiel or

multigrain bread • 100 grams soft goat cheese • 2 tablespoons honey • 4 fresh �igs, sliced • 8 thin slices of prosciutto • 1 cup arugula • Salt and pepper, to taste Directions 1. Use a toaster or barbecue to grill the bread.

2. Spread 25 grams of goat cheese on each slice of bread, and top each with half a tablespoon of honey. Salt and pepper to taste.

3. Atop each crostino, lay a quarter of the �ig slices and 2 slices of prosciutto.

4. Garnish each crostino with a few arugula leaves.

Salt and pepper to taste.

Campsite kitchen essentials Are you going camping? With a bit of preparation, you can eat as well as you do at home. In addition to food, here’s what you’ll need.

5 kinds of fishing lures Lures are designed to simulate live bait and have several other advantages. In addition to being less messy, they can help you cast further and target species more directly. Here are �ive kinds of commonly used lures.
