Manor Fun Daze celebrates 40th anniversary Submitted by Presley Onufreychuk It was a busy day in Manor on Saturday, July 20 while everyone celebrated the 40th anniversary of Manor Fun Daze. The community welcomed everybody for a fun filled day with the family. The day started out with a pancake breakfast followed by the annual parade which was “retro” themed to celebrate 40 years! The retro themed float that took first place was the Pig n Whistle tribute band consisting of band members Micki McCrimmon, Shannon Smyth, Cindi McCauley, Debbie Cossette (Gould), Joretta King and Heather McCauley.

Manor volunteer fire department had a successful hotdog and burger sale for lunch to raise money for new Personal Protective Equipment. Throughout the day the annual “Skid” Clarke memorial slopitch tournament took place and welcomed teams from all communities.

Before the bull-riding started everyone went and found supper whether it was the food booth brought to you by the Moose Mountain Air Cadets or the roast supper from Weirs Catering. To celebrate, Weirs Catering also provided a Manor Fun Daze 40th anniversary cake.

This year the PBR (Professional Bull Riding) consisted of both adult and junior bull riding as well as junior steer riding. Jacob Gardner from Fort St. John, British Columbia took home first place. Gardner competed against 22 riders and made it into the finals, finishing the evening with a score of 89.5 out of 10 finalist.

Gov’t. taking Crown dividends makes no sense

By Murray Mandryk Saskatchewan’s Crown corporations made $541 million in 2018-19, according to the Crown Investment Corp. (CIC) annual report.

Let us consider that from a number of perspectives.

The first perspective is that owning healthy Crowns is not always something Saskatchewan government always wanted.

One of those healthy Crowns is SaskEnergy, which celebrated is 30th year in existence by declaring earlier this month $166 million in net income _ enough to provide government with a $60-million dividend and small rebates for those wanting to install expensive energy-efficient furnaces. (More on those dividends in a moment.)

But think back 30 years ago to when SaskEnergy was nothing but a subsidiary of SaskPower.

In the spring of 1989, Saskatchewan was in a pitched battle between those who were for and those who were against privatization, a battle that makes the worst of today’s political rhetoric seem passionless.

“I expect as much noise and bell-ringing and hollering as you’ve ever seen,” then-Progressive Conservative premier Grant Devine said 30 years ago as he unveiled his agenda to sell off SaskEnergy.

“This is (the NDP’s) Alamo. This is their Waterloo.

This is the end of the line for them. This is it.”

Of course, the rhetoric from the then-NDP opposition was no less severe.

“April 21, 1989 (the day the SaskEnergy privatization bill was introduced) will be remembered as a day of bitter betrayal,” then-NDP leader Roy Romanow said.

Well, we all know how things turned out. And today it would be hard for even the most hardline conservative to argue that they haven’t turned out for the better. Having Crown corporations supplying our most basic needs like heat, electricity and telephone/internet services has allowed Saskatchewan to develop a successful, modern economy.

But this takes us back to the success of today’s Crowns … or more specifically, how the Sask. Party is utilizing that success.

Upon announcing the final CIC 2019-19 results, it was learned that $256 million of that $541-million accumulated profit of CIC Crowns would be going to the government as “dividends” to help offset their existing deficits.

That, by the way, would include. $6 million came from the last $30 million of sold assets for the Saskatchewan Transportation Company.

Of course, there are those who will now argue the only point of having public ownership of healthy Crown utilities is for them to help with government finances.

However, that was a wrong-headed argument when NDP governments used to make it and likely even worse coming from the Sask. Party now.

For starters, it has been the Sask. Party government’s argument for months now that a carbon tax on gasoline to supposedly deal with future environmental problems is simply wrong.

Premier Scott Moe and company may be right that the carbon tax, at least as proposed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government, is ineffective.

But is imposing a federal carbon tax on Saskatchewan people any more unfair than its provincial government hitting them with severe yearly electrical utility rate hikes when you are taking that money and moving it to general revenue fund coffers?

Why are we not instead using those Crown profits to provide rebates to consumers who are hurting as much from utility costs as pump prices? Or better yet, why let the utilities like SaskEnergy and SaskPower keep their surpluses so they can better deal with their own pressing infrastructure needs?

Doesn’t that make infinitely more sense than the Crowns borrowing money for capital infrastructure at high interest rates?

And wasn’t moving to summary financial statements supposed to stop the nonsense of playing shell games with your hard-earned dollars?

I t’s great to still have profitable Crowns, but how we are now using those profits leaves much to be desired.

Because everybody else is doing it “She should have her children taken away.”

“Somebody needs to tune her in big time. Who does she think she is?”

These are just two of the hundreds of comments directed toward a mom in Ontario. Her two young boys were misbehaving on the bus to and from school My Outlook so she made them walk to class Shelley Luedtke carrying a sign explaining they had been rude to their bus driver. She then posted a video showing how she had chosen to discipline her children and an incredible amount of reaction followed.

There are tens of thousands of videos posted by parents displaying the techniques they have used to curb or change their children’s behavior.

They are proudly posting it and, of course, opening themselves up to the torrent of mostly harsh comment coming their way. Why anyone would post videos of disciplinary action against their own children belies my understanding, yet there they are, ready for every neighbor and stranger to comment on. But what is hard to justify is why parents trying to discipline a child get vilified, while parents setting out to make fun of their children get praised—and emulated.

I can take a joke. Honestly, I can. I love to laugh and have fun, but somebody please explain to me why we spent weeks—weeks—watching parents throw slices of cheese at their babies and we called it...entertainment.

The first one, posted by a father, then deleted, was re-posted by someone else, and after receiving over 10 million views was also taken down, when in his words things “genuinely got way out of hand.” But by then, of course, countless people had followed suit, tossing cheese at their babies, recording their reaction, posting it and waiting for the likes to come rolling in.

There are always strange, occasionally humorous, but sometimes dangerous challenges floating around the internet urging people to get in on the action. While in some instances the biggest loss has been dignity, in others the damage has been far more consequential. The car surfing challenge that encouraged people to stand on top of a moving vehicle and pretend to surf, or the fire challenge that had people pour flammable liquid on some part of their body and set themselves on fire, resulted in injury and death.

There’s no question people have been doing dangerous stunts and taking ridiculous risks from the beginning of time. Any one of us can likely tell a tale or two. But what these challenges do is add the element of trying to attract a global audience to witness the spectacle, and in order to attract attention amidst the digital glut, there seems to be little choice but to up the ante. And so the absurdity ramps up and we find ourselves inundated with videos of people putting 100 layers of makeup on their face, or trying to get their lips to look like Kylie Jenner’s, or eating as much cinnamon as possible in 60 seconds. For a reaction. A fleeting moment of notoriety…or…because everybody else is doing it? Hmm, sounds like something parents used to caution their children against. Now parents are throwing food at their children because others are doing it.

Isn’t life just a bit short to spend time wasting it watching strangers jump out of moving vehicles or hold detergent pods in their mouths? The numbing nature of constant exposure just keeps the cycle churning and drives a commentary that becomes increasingly vicious and shaming. But as long as an audience keeps creating a demand there will most certainly be a steady supply.

It’s actually not that hard to disconnect and re-engage with the world around us. If people were to reclaim the hours spent observing the lives of others, just think of the time it could free up to get back to living their own. That’s my outlook.

Financial Focus Managing Your Money Don’t let your kids squander their inheritance Over the next several decades, it’s estimated that Baby Boomers will pass down $30 trillion in assets to future generations*. If you shudder to think what your beloved kids may do with the money you worked so hard to build, you’re not alone.

Inheritances tend to dwindle significantly in the first few years of someone receiving one, fortunately, there are ways to protect your life savings from being squandered.

Put your wishes in a will Create a clearly defined will, listing who gets what assets, if a trust should be set up to help administer those assets, and who the trustee should be.

Trust the testamentary trust The best way to

maintain control over your assets in death is to specify in your will that you want a discretionary testamentary trust created. The trustee, appointed in your will – typically a responsible family member -- would then decide when the beneficiary should receive assets from the trust.

Explore an annuity If there’s no obvious trustee to oversee a testamentary trust, then you can instruct the executor of your estate to purchase an annuity for beneficiaries. The executor would take a lump sum of money from the estate and purchase that investment.

The annuity’s payments would then go to the child.

This option isn’t as flexible as a trust and shouldn’t be your first choice, but it

can come in handy if you can’t choose a trustee or if you think the trustee won’t commit to overseeing a trust for an extended period of time.

Give gifts while you’re still alive Another way to maintain control is to parcel out money while you’re still alive. Not only can it be rewarding to see your children enjoy their inheritance, but you can control who gets what when. There are risks to this approach including giving out too much money and then not being able to cover your own living expenses.

Teach your children about money The best line of defence might have nothing to do with wills or trusts at all – if you teach your kids from an early age

how to be responsible with money, they’ll be less likely to blow their inheritance.

Be sure to talk to your kids about your will, your estate plan and bring them into the conversation with your professional advisor.

HEALTH HUB The mental health benefits of bouldering Bouldering provides a serious workout for your legs, arms, abdominals, fingers and back muscles. It’s a great way to stay in shape, but its most surprising benefits are actually related to mental health.

What is bouldering?

A specific type of rock climbing, bouldering is practised on small formations or artificial walls typically less than five metres tall. Since it’s performed without ropes or harnesses, mats are usually laid out to prevent injury in case of a fall.

Benefits for mental health A study published in 2015 followed two groups of depressive patients. Those who participated in a weekly bouldering activity in addition to following their usual treatment showed marked improvement. Many of their symptoms went from moderate to mild. These findings motivated some German hospitals to use bouldering as part of their treatment program for depression.

While more research is needed, the activity looks like a promising exercise intervention for the treatment of depression. Researchers believe this is because bouldering requires sustained focus and mindfulness, which breaks patients out of negative thought cycles. In addition,

bouldering comes with builtin social support, as participants encourage each other and provide advice. Finally, it offers a sense of accomplish-

ment.

Bouldering is a fun and challenging activity that’ll keep you in shape, both physically and mentally.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons I guess by now some of you have concerns over the lack of reports?

Maybe, maybe not? That said some vacation and some secondments, plus things have kept us busy.

I had a few days off and then worked for several days in Saskatoon when all the Premiers came to our great province. On the side of my desk I do VIP duty. I wear dress shoes, pants, a sport jacket, shirt and tie, body armour and all my intervention options on a dress belt.

Most, if not all people I interacted, with did not realize I was so equipped. Not really comfortable. Just as you see on TV, I wear an ear piece and get to talk into my wrist on occasion.

Trust me, the novelty wears off very quickly.

I did get asked if I was “Secret Service” and I replied, “No, RCMP” The next question was “What is RCMP?” and I replied Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The individual then replied, “I am from Chicago, this is what you do?” I replied we have a similar role to their Secret Service, FBI, ATF, DEA, Sherriff’s, State Police, Town Police, and City Police.

She was impressed, or confused. I was too hot and uncomfortable to

really care. We do a lot, something we are proud of and Canadians should be proud of.

Cst. Dubeau also found herself working outside the detachment area. She was part of the “Honour Guard” at the Memorial for our Lieutenant Governor. It is quite a privilege. It involved practice and then a flight to Saskatoon for the Memorial Service.

White Bear had another successful Pow Wow. If you have never been to a Pow Wow before you are definitely missing out, take your family and take your friends, it is a great experience.

• We had many 911 misdials and others that used 911 to garner our attention.

• On one such occasion one individual was lodged for being drunk, un-cooperative and abusive to everyone. The other individual found a loved one to come and pick them up. Not that the first individual was not loved . . . well, what can I say not enough love sometimes I guess.

• On another occasion we responded to a vicious dog that would not permit occupants of a vehicle to get out.

Upon arrival the cute little puppy quickly came to the Members and followed them around like, well a lost puppy.

Some people just don’t relate well with animals.

We even have a Member that fears the fourlegged furry creatures that inhabit our Detachment area.

• There was a fight and an individual interrupted the fight to defend their sibling and chased the aggressor away, only to return and find out the individual they were defending was not their sibling. What can we say alcohol was involved.

• When a relationship ends, individuals are often bitter and angry. Due to this, the Police often get involved, being there is often “finger pointing” and “allegations”, be they real or false. Recently we had such a case and unfortunately the alleged victim found themselves charged, being the evidence showed they were the aggressor. It happens more than you would think.

• We responded to another complaint of domestic violence where the accused was arrested for assault, while alleged victim was arrested for two counts of failing to comply with their release conditions, assault and mischief. All we can say is if this alleged victim chose to comply with their release conditions there would have been no Police involvement.

• In many “domestic” violence incidents, be they verbal or physical, it is often the children that get dragged in and are put in an awkward situation when they have to tell the Police the truth which inevitably results in one of their parents getting in trouble. We suggest taking the high road, however, we know this is a route less travelled.

• An intoxicated youth returned home and the parents and siblings ended up getting in a confrontation. The youth ended up being lodged. I know liquor is often known as “liquid courage” but when I was young I snuck home, tried to be quiet, and avoided any confrontation with my parents. If caught it was “Yes sir, no sir, three bags full.”

• Another youth came home intoxicated

and combative. They really annoyed their parent, who had the youth arrested and initially wanted charges. Fortunately for the youth, after a little deep thought, the parent changed their mind, however, the youth still spent some time reflecting (passed out) with us.

• Thus a tip, when you are drinking do not get in an argument with a sober individual. As much as you think you are being logical, you are not and you will only irritate the sober individual, be they your parents, your spouse, or let us say the Police.

• Many individuals have snuck out the window to go socialize with friends. That said, if you are on release conditions to be at your home and you disregard you parents and sneak out, don’t be surprised if the Police get involved and you get charged.

• Of course, if your child has been charged and is on conditions to remain at your residence, you can’t just choose to take them on a trip, leave town or leave the province without first getting the permission of the Crown Prosecutor. It does not matter how mad you get at the Police, we cannot do anything.

• We dealt with another family dealing with “Estate Issues” after the death of a family member. Loss is always difficult to deal with.

More so when there are disputes, often over very trivial things. It is sad and unfortunate, however, it is the world we live in.

• Through traffic stops and routine Police work we assisted several agencies with clearing up warrants and serving court documents.

As we always say, if you are wanted, don’t attract the attention of you local law enforcement. This advice is often ignored.

• We had a break and enter involving a suspect vehicle that was stolen out of Alameda. Patrols

were made and an individual was charged with possessing stolen property, break and enter, theft and breaching their release conditions.

They were remanded for court.

• Another break and enter investigation continues. It is a little vague though, as in “I think my ex is trying to steal my vehicle from my garage” They just had a feeling.

I think there is a song with that title? Nope the song is “I gotta feeling” It has nothing to do with ex’s taking vehicles, that is more of a country theme isn’t it?

• On another break and enter a guitar was left behind. We are not sure who the owner is, but we are continuing with our investigation. If you are missing a guitar please contact us.

• Sometimes loved ones don’t love you as you think they should. It is not a Police matter if your grandchild blocks you on social media, I can imagine it is concerning, but it is not illegal.

• Two individuals were observed running around intoxicated at the Resort by our ever reliable and valuable Security. Both were located and lodged in cells, with one being charged for breaching their release conditions.

• So, a little bit of advice. If you are invited to a house party, do not wear out your welcome.

The proprietor of the residence wanted everyone to leave, they chose to ignore this individual and four were subsequently arrested. One was on conditions of no alcohol and was subsequently charged.

• On another occasion intoxicated individuals wore out their welcome at a residence, they chose to leave before the police arrived.

Maybe leave before the police are called?

• As always we deal with Child Welfare, Mental Health, false alarms, 911 misdials, Coroners Act investigations and minor hit and run investigations.

• Members responded to an erratic driver complaint involving a little bit of “road rage” afterwards when a verbal discussion took place. Upon arrival of the RCMP, the alleged accused was deemed to be under the influence of alcohol. They chose not to provide a sample of their breath and were charged for “Refusal”.

This carries the same punishment as an impaired driving. It just makes our job a little easier being we just have

to prove they refused.

They were also charged for having liquor in a vehicle and mischief to property.

• An ATV was stopped, speeding and the operator was subsequently charged for impaired driving after providing samples of 140 mg%. Yes, it is illegal to operate any motor vehicle while impaired!

• We arrested another impaired driver after a 911 call and they provided samples of 260 and 250 mg%.

• Due to a rollover collision, an individual was arrested and brought to the hospital for blood samples. They were charged with possession of cannabis in a vehicle and drive without a valid licence. Once we get the blood results back we expect further charges.

• Several 72-hour suspensions were issued. One which due to them having a graduated licence resulted in a 60day seizure.

• An individual was receiving unwanted text messages and we warned the alleged offender to stop. Best advice is block the sender, your service provider will tell you how, or use the Internet to find out how.

• So your ride left you and you are intoxicated. Who you gonna call?

“Ghostbusters?”

Nope, “911” The individual was arrested for public intoxication and misuse of 911, then lodged until sober. The ride they got was not the ride they expected. They did get a ride though. That is a win isn’t it?

• Apparently one neighbour does not like that another neighbour’s dog is often loose. The other neighbor, when confronted, stated their neighbour has loud parties and they drink all the time. Both were spoken to and the police left.

• We are investigating allegations of an adult selling liquor to youth.

This is a stiff fine and our investigation continues.

• Several individuals were intoxicated and urinating in public. We gave them a place to recuperate, with one who has become a frequent guest being charged for being intoxicated in a public place.

• An intoxicated individual went for a walk and chose to attend the detachment and knock on the door looking for a safe place to sleep. Government lodging provided.

From Page 6 - RCMP report • One neighbour was upset that another neighbour was pumping water onto their property after a recent heavy rain. They don’t get along and thus we, the police, became involved.

All resolved . . . until the next rainfall??

• An intoxicated individual was walking down the road and we gave them a ride to cells and let them sober up. It was in their best interest and that of the community. Not someone you want walking around drunk.

• One of our communities reported an individual digging up community property with a backhoe and we are investigating.

• Saskpower went to cut power from a residence being it was being stolen. The proprietor of the residence was subsequently arrested and charged.

• An apparent ex used the remote to a garage to steal a vehicle which also contained $500 cash within it. The vehicle was recovered in Manitoba and our investigation continues.

Please ensure your vehicle is always locked and never leave valuables in your vehicle. This is more important if your ex has access to the garage.

ant allegedly would not leave. Investigation determined the two were in a relationship. I dare say if I called my spouse a tenant things would not go well for me. That said the police resolved the situation.

• Many bottles and cans were stolen. We have a suspect, however, not enough evidence to charge the suspect.

• We are investigating several shoplifting files and drug distribution files.

• A wallet was stolen from an unlocked vehicle, we keep telling everyone lock everything up!

• We had a collision where the one driver was charged for careless driving. The other driver was charged for operating a motor vehicle while suspended. Their argument was they had a valid Alberta licence.

Our argument was their privilege to drive in Saskatchewan was suspended and the collision took place in Saskatchewan. They were also given two weeks to obtain a Saskatchewan driver’s licence. One can only play the system so long before one is caught.

• An individual found a 3 inch by 1 inch

rectangle cut out of their tire. No suspects and no clues. Just a reminder to check your tires, your lug nuts, oil, gas and cell phone battery before you travel any distance.

• We had reports of cattle loose near the highway, big dogs on the highway and there were complaints about police being on the highway.

OK, nobody complained to us about the police being on the highway, but I am sure some of those that got a ticket complained to their friends and family.

• A youth had their bike stolen and the message went out on Facebook and one of our volunteer firefighters saw the message, saw the bike, then called the RCMP who arrested and charged a youth.

• We are investigating a possible fraud involving an e-transfer. If you don’t trust the other person, don’t do it.

• Approximately 50 tickets and 65 warnings were issued during these two weeks.

The U15 Boys AA Tier 5 Provincial team played in Saskatoon July 19-21. The team went 3-1 in the round robin, but unfortunately didn’t make the playoffs.

But here in Saskatchewan, recent government changes mean the brave emergency service workers who fight and manage wildfires and environmental disasters, like flooding, are losing the existing benefits and job security they count on.

That’s a lot to lose for 600 workers and their families.

Taking the road less traveled

By Calvin Daniels It is always interesting to meet up with Kevin Elmy of Friendly Acres Seed Farm at Saltcoats.

In the world of agriculture today most producers march down a rather straight road with a single goal in mind, to maximize production.

While that seems to be the obvious goal for farming, Elmy is taking what poet Robert Frost once termed ‘the road less traveled’.

Elmy looks less at bulk production numbers, and instead says he wants to increase the net return of each acre on his farm.

On the surface it might sound like the same goal, but it doesn’t always work out that way.

Going after maximum production comes with a cost, one that is typically high, and is trending higher.

Such production means pouring the fertilizer to crops, and that comes with a cost.

Elmy wants to use crop rotations to pro-

duce nutrient needs for future crops, nitrogen fixed by legumes an example, or to allow natural soil processes to unlock existing nutrients, such as phosphate, rather than simply adding more. He says the effort is working and today he applies no additional fertilizers.

Gross production also typically means continuous cropping, and that can have long term impact on soil health.

Elmy is fine with a third of his land growing crops for green manure, or simply soil health, so his crop mix includes grass and chicory and field radish. It’s a mind shift for farmers today to grow a crop not meant to be harvested in the fall to be sold, but Elmy said long term he feels his soils will be the better for it.

Soils naturally have living organisms as part of its natural systems too. Spraying herbicides and pesticides and using fungicides can kill off good ‘bugs’ in the soil system, so Elmy looks to control weeds through rotation, and avoid ap-

plying chemicals.

In the process, Elmy has reduced his cost of production. There is no line on the ledger for fertilizers and a generally smaller one for chemicals. He points out that by reducing costs significantly, he has reduced the risk he faces each year too.

A near crop failure because of severe weather still hurts but he doesn’t have a big fertilizer or chemical bill to pay at least.

It all means he can produce less than a high input neighbour and have a stronger net return with less risk.

Elmy is not unique in his approach, there are others treading the same less taken path, but his apparent success does provide food for thought for the broader industry.

The question becomes simple, can Mother Nature and crops managed well improve the bottom line over maximizing purchased inputs?

Elmy would say yes, and that has to have producers thinking.

Ladies golf for Red Coat Coat Mutual Aid

By Dolores Young The Drive for Lives Charity Golf Tournament (formerly known as Shoot for the STARs Tournament) was held Friday, July 19 at the White Bear Golf Course with 128 golfers in attendance. This year the funds were raised for the Red Coat Mutual Aid, in conjunction with the Carlyle and Redvers fire departments. This covers over 2,400 kms within the three RM’s of Antler, Brock and Moose Mountain.

Following the tournament, supper was held at the Bear law Casino.

The score was so very close but the win-

ners of the day were Wendy Currie, Colleen Currie Linda Gliem, and Bernie Blackstock with a score of 69. Second place winning team was Donna Coffey, Bev Grimes, Connie McIntrye and Jan Keating with a score of 70.

Rob Klassen and Travis Van Meer of the Red Coat Mutual Aid ran the Target Putting Contest. The outer ring being worth 5 points, first ring 10 points, second ring 15 points and in the cup was worth 30 points. For $5.00 each lady got three chances to putt and the lady with the most points won half the pot for the contest.

Total amount raised was $660.00. There were two lucky winners, so the pot was split between Doris Morrow and Jan Keating, each receiving $165.00.

Guests speaker Rob Klassen, Deputy Chief from the Carlyle Fire Department explained some of the services and help they have given at accidents.

Zoey Dubois also was a guest speaker.

Zoey spoke on the help that was given from the Red Coat Mutual Aid and others the freezing cold evening of the accident that her and her mother Cheryl Dubois were involved.

Artist Colony houses a rare Saskatchewan talent

His almost photographic memory helped him know when he had the perfect shot, where to find that shot at a later date in the photo archive and helped him when he began exploring his passion for carving.

One September day four years ago, he was sharing Moose Mountain Provincial Park with about six other campers, talking with his wife as he worked on a piece of sculpture. Frederickson had already completed a piece he had entitled “Bear Soul” and was in the middle of a piece that featured two eagles fighting over one fish.

The piece was quite large and the birds had a wingspan of over 32 inches each. His wife was asking him when he was going to cast his first sculpture, where they would do it and how they would find the money.

Casting a sculpture in bronze is very expensive, not only because of the cost of the entire process but also because most foundries want you to do 10 pours in order to justify the cost of the mold.

For a first timer that cost was prohibitive when you had no customers lined up. As they discussed the pros and cons a gentleman walked into the campsite and said he thought he should introduce himself to fellow artist, especially a sculptor, since he was also one and there were so few of them around. The gentleman’s name was Rich Loeffler, and before he left the campsite, he had invited Ken to cast his sculpture in an art foundry in Montana where he was part of a stable of artists. Loeffler mad all the calls and

arrangements and when Ken showed up with his sculpture of “Bear Soul”, the owner of the Foundry was so impressed with the work of art that he offered to let Ken do a single pour of the mold if he wished to. Bear Soul was cast in November and in March he got the finished sculpture back. His wife was on the board of Sunrise Community Futures and they travelled to the Canadian Convention north of Quebec City where the keynote speaker was Ovide Mercredi, past National Chief, Assembly of First Nations, lawyer, politician and author. During a chance meeting after the speech, Frederickson asked Mercredi if he would critique a piece of sculpture. He shared photographs of Bear Soul and Mercredi loved it. He sent a text to Ken’s wife saying “You have an incredible gift of art that should be shared with the world”. He was so impressed with Frederickson’s talent that he invited him to attend the Assiniboia Art Retreat. Part of the retreat was the opportunity to display one piece for a month at the Shurniak Art Gallery, and the only complete piece of work was Bear Soul.

When he carried it into the gallery he was asked “Where have you been hiding your whole life?”, to which he replied “Not hiding, just busy doing other things.”. Shurniak told him that he wanted to host his first show.

Frederickson continued to sculpt and on October 1, 2017 he held his first show at the Shurniak Art Gallery in Assiniboia SK with Ovide Mercredi. Mercredi wrote poems to accompany the sculptures and Frederickson created sculptures to go with some of Mercredi’s poems.

Immediately following the show, Frederickson travelled to Calgary where he sub-

mitted 5 pieces to the Calgary Stampede. With over 300 pieces submitted, he was thrilled to have one selected to be presented as a trophy for the Stampede. The selection meant seven castings would be done, the first to be part of the permanent Calgary Stampede art collection, the second to the corporate sponsor of the event, and one presented to the winner for the next 5 years. Since then he has created over. “Fly Fishing”, the one he was working on in the campsite, has become part of the permanent collection at the Shurniak Art Gallery, amongst such famous artists as the Group of Seven.

Another one that has great significance was commissioned for Ray Kneeland of Saskatoon. It is a bronze of Ray riding his favourite horse “Dice. This meant a lot because the horse had been purchased from Frederickson’s father and he knows that when the time comes Kneeland will be able to carry that horse into the nursing home with him and enjoy it and the memories every day.

Frederickson is self taught and he sculpts in petroleum wax or oilbased clay. Once a piece is sculpted it is covered in rubber to form a mold, which is then used to make a wax replica. That replica is then covered with a ceramic slurry and fine sand is blown onto it, repeating the process over and over until it forms a ceramic shell. The shell is placed in a kiln and fired, the lost wax melting out of the inside. The shell is filled with molten bronze at a temperature of 2100 degree Fahrenheit and when it has cooled the ceramic shell is broken, leaving the raw bronze.

Each piece is unique, despite using the same mold, because the patina is hand painted. Each piece is created from memory, and chosen because it interests him, gives him full license to design it his way and is one that he can sell more than one casting of.

Frederickson has been a part of the Assiniboia art retreat every year since his first visit and the group lay claim to him as an artist. The Kenosee Lake Art Colony invited him to be a permanent artist 3 years ago and Frederickson takes full advantage of the peace and inspiration to be found there.

He has many pieces on display and welcomes visitors. Frederickson is part of an art retreat at the Mother Teresa Centre in late August, attended by approximately 22 artists from two or three provinces. The retreat is followed by an exhibition held in the Recreation Hall. This year the exhibition will be held August 29 and the public is invited to attend.

Search and Rescue looking to start Saskatchewan Chapter

By Laura Kish Have you ever had the fear of being lost in the wilderness, buried in an avalanche and scared out of your mind and wonder if anyone will ever find you…ALIVE? If you know anything about a rescue dog, you can be assured that a K-9 Search and Rescue team gives you a better chance of being found.

Traci Anderson of Kipling is a dog owner who is hoping to start a K-9 Search and Rescue group with people from all over Saskatchewan who all have the same goal in mind. That’s to start a Chapter for SAR in Saskatchewan.

“In order to have a chapter for SAR in Saskatchewan we have to have at least 6 members,” Anderson explains. “Some of us had previously taken courses in training dogs but one of the requirements is all members have to have taken a seminar.”

Anderson contacted Canadian Search & Disaster Dogs Association to lead a seminar in Kipling in order to get dog owners interested in establishing a Search and Rescue team in Saskatchewan.

Silvie Montier, Training Coordinator & IRO Certified International K-9 Team Leader, and two experienced Handlers led a seminar over this past weekend in Kipling with five members taking part in learning how to start the training of their dogs.

Over the course of the two and a half days the leaders with the help of their certified dogs demonstrated the basic exercises to ‘show them how it’s done’.

It’s not just the dogs that need training. Their owners need to learn how to work with their dogs as well.

The handler has to learn and understand how to direct the dog in a search.

Suitable dogs tend to be a herder such as a border collie, a hunter such as a springer spaniel or retriever (Labs and Golden Retrievers), a worker dog such as German Shepherd or Malinois. So long as the dog has a good temperament and is a dog that loves to fetch or loves to tug, these are easier to train for a search dog and one that’s not shy or scared of people.

In order to act as professionals a handler/ volunteer must train like professionals. They must be dedicated, reliable, disciplined, have freedom to be able to go.

How do you take a pet or a puppy to a working dog? Montier says “It’s all about air scenting.”

Part of the training involves teaching your dog three things: - Nose work - to find the

source of the scent - Alert the owner they’ve found something (barks) - Searching - putting it all together.

During the search training owners were taught to attach the dog to the toy/food or the reward, attach the toy to the victim and last but not least attach the dog to the victim.

During the training you need to change your attitude and change your dog’s attitude.

Changing your mentality is the most difficult part of training a SAR dog.

“During the initial training you are a post!” explains Montier “No interfering with your dog.

Your dog is not your pet; it’s your partner.”

“You have to respect your dog and your dog will respect you,” Montier comments. While working, you have to allow your dog to see the Victim as more important than you are.

Change your dog’s attitude. You want a willful dog, a dog who is a problem solver, an agile dog, a courageous dog,

and an independent dog.

Training leads to testing. Under Canadian Search & Disaster Dogs Association, once a dog and its owner have completed the basics they will train for approximately two years. Then it’s time to test them to see if they’re both ready to be operational on the SAR team.

And it all starts here “So they can live…”

“Over all it was a great weekend with lots of learning, as well as laughter. It was a great opportunity for K-9 people to get together and do what they enjoy the most.....train,” comments Anderson of her experience at this seminar.

“It was the first chapter in our book, to a K-9 program in Saskatchewan. It’s a start, and we look forward to being able to move forward. We are in the process of planning some training weekends very soon, and looking forward to another great weekend of training and friendship!” adds Anderson.

Holidaying and visiting with Leonard and Lil Patton for a while are their son Michael Patton, his wife Joanne and son Sabastian from Perth, Australia. They also visited with brother, Trevor and Sheri Patton and family.

Gray and Edel Cowan spent July 17 in Regina spending some time visiting with son, Jeff Cowan enjoying a lunch before heading back home to Alida.

Spending a holiday day on July 19 with Ainsley Cowan was Lily Allen (Redvers) – they spent most of their time at the Cowan camper at Moose Creek Regional Park.

Family and friends gathered in the evening on July 20 for the wedding uniting Fraser Yates and Zamantha Webb in marriage at the Alida Hall, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion. The young couple will continue to make their home in Alida. Congratulations and Best wishes Zam and Fraser as you continue your next life adventure in marriage.

Not much news to report, my guess is that many may be enjoying their holiday time somewhere and hopefully report back when they make it back home. Enjoy your time away from the hustle and bustle at home.

Another week of swimming lessons is starting this Monday morning with a good enrollment – enjoy the week at the pool. If unable to attend this session, check at the pool there’s likely at least one more set of lessons coming up in August. It’s great weather to enjoy the water – play safely everyone.

The weatherman has been generous with lots of nice warm (hot) weather again – one surely enjoys the air conditioning on these days. Finally got finished with the weeding in the garden – boy it’s surprising how quickly it dries up out there – could use another nice gentle rain again. However I imagine that the

fellas busy doing their haying would like to see it stay dry for now until they are finished with their job of bailing. Gee before one knows it, it will be getting on to harvest time – just don’t even want to think about that right now – let’s just enjoy the time of leisure while we can.

A group of interested people gathered at the old Olson farm last Sunday, July 21 to spread the ashes of the late Joan Forbes. Joan was the oldest sibling in Cliff and Irma Olson’s family. She passed away last January at the age of 82 years at Kelowna where she had resided for many years. Her partner, Fred Steele was in attendance along with relatives and friends from various points. This was Joan’s wish to have her ashes spread at the family farm she knew from her childhood. The Frederickson’s who now own the land not only granted their permission, but had a welcome sign and a bouquet of flowers at the gate. What a thoughtful gesture.

Mary Thiessen brought two artifacts to our Circle of Friends. Ralph Mills identified both. One was a toothed spade with a foot rest; used to cut hay from a frozen pile, or sod to be used in sod walls for a shack. Fred remembered something similar used to cut lumps of frozen cabbage in the icehouse. The second was a huge clamp used to control the amount of steam, on a steam engine running a threshing machine.

Susan Davidson has returned home after spending some time visiting with her sister, Trudy Davidson and Ed Miller in Kingston, NS. Aldea Bengtsen enjoyed a two week visit with her grandsons Everett and Colton Gray( Lorraine’s) from Viscount, SK. The boys were regulars at the Museum on Tuesdays to enjoy the kid’s activities.

Stephen Smulan and SJ travelled through Yellowstone, Utah, Arizona and Colorado recently. They reported a great scenic trip through these states.

The Lion›s fundraiser for Jayda Carpenter last Wednesday was a great success. Over 400 people attended and enjoyed the musical entertainment and games and activities. A great showing of community spirit.

We relived our camping memories. Janet had only slept once in a hammock under the stars, with kingbirds waking at 3am. Joyce had camped Coast to Coast, in a motorhome, but the coldest ever was in a tent at Banff. Leora slept in a tent with a heater, but the inflatable mattress gave out. Ruth Dennis family showed horses and sheep at various Fairs; and slept in their truck. Grace drove a busload of little boys to Swimming lessons at Carlyle Lake and stayed in a cabin. Ralph Mills remembered cooking in a tent on a wood stove at 30 degrees; but his favorite was potatoes cooked in the coals of green birch. Clifford was involved in a Flying Fishing Camp with cabins at Pelican Narrows. Violet’s husband fished, so they tented at Kenosee and Devil Lake. Gladys had happy memories of Trossacks Bible Camp, sleeping in cabins, the campfires and singing. Fred was asleep in a tent when a squirrel ran over his nose. Ralph Burke was involved with the camp at Round Lake, where they slept 20 in two big tents. After a heavy rain a torrent of water flowed through the girls tent.

Charlotte Kovach brought a movie and popcorn on Friday night. Landon Ashley, Zacch and Emily visited Grace Toms.

Harold and Cheryl Friesen held a music night.

Sharon Beutler and Cindy Knihnistki, Calgary, visited Joyce Gillies. Rona and Norma Coffey came to see Marie Jensen. Bruce and Sheila Gillett from Chestermere, B.C. called on the residents.

“It takes a village”

Community fundraising helps kids go to camp Submitted The Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party (KLKP), a music camp for all ages and abilities in Moose Mountain Provincial Park, would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to their fundraising campaign.

The campaign focused on making it easier for local children to attend music camp, with funds being raised to hire camp counsellors and create additional bursaries.

“In the past, around 80% of our attendees came from a 100 km radius of the camp,” said KLKP founder Michele Amy, “but the past two years that percentage was reversed, with only about 25% of our participants coming from local communities.”

“We are a high profile camp in Canada, and participants attend from as far as New Brunswick, The Northwest Territories, British Columbia, The Cayman Islands, and all over the continental United States. But recently, our local population has noticeably reduced.”

Amy believes low local attendance numbers

are connected to the recent economic downturn, with more families having to cut out “extra” expenses: “Our instructors are world-renowned, and when the camp was started, the whole point was to give local musicians access to this quality of instruction.

Our goal was to grow the music right here at home. But if local people can’t afford to access it, then we have lost our way. So this year, we have worked hard to raise funds to decrease the financial burden on families wanting to send their children to camp.”

KLKP’s first new initiative geared towards local families was to hire counsellors for children age 9 to 15. In the past, campers under 16 had to be accompanied by a parent or guardian, but now parents can enroll their child in music camp without having to take time off work themselves.

“We recognized that many children were missing out on the high quality instruction offered at KLKP because their parents couldn’t afford to take five days of vacation time,” said

Amy, “by hiring counsellors to ensure kids are happy and healthy at camp, we hope to return to our goal of growing the Local music scene.

Amy says “I mean, it’s nice that folks from Calgary and Vancouver and Winnipeg get to access our programming, but the real goal is for local players to receive the benefit of our efforts. So we are hoping that this will help return to that goal.”

The fundraising efforts kicked off with a benefit concert in Carlyle this past May. Local artists headlined the event, and area businesses donated silent auctions items for an evening that raised over $800. With the generous support of private donors from the Southeast, and a creative Facebook fundraising campaign, the camp reached its fundraising goal and was able to launch the new program.

“We are so grateful to live in an area that is so supportive of the arts,” said Amy, “our camp truly would not be possible without the help of our local community.

KLKP also raised enough funds to extend its bursary program, which reduces the cost of camp for local attendees.

Since the camp encourages families to attend together, Amy wanted to make the camp more accessible for the Southeast community: “While our camp offers excellent value for the world-class instruction we provide, we

realize that every family has a different economic reality.”

“Our bursaries make camp more feasible for the families who could most benefit from a musical experience.”

Offering instruction in fiddle, guitar, piano, voice, ukulele, mandolin, cello, and banjo, this year campers can choose to attend the Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party either August 5-9, or August 12-16. The camp is held at the Kenosee Boys and Girls Camp in

Moose Mountain Provincial Park.

This year KLKP has attracted in-demand instructors from eight different provinces, the United States, and Scotland.

Last minute registrations are still welcome, with bursaries still available.

Moose Fest hoping to be an annual event

By Dolores Young On Friday, July 19 the 2nd Moose Fest was held at White Bear Lake on Hotel Beach, hosted by 97.7 FM The Moose.

The Moose radio station has been 17 years on the air and Lana Littlechief will be making this an annual event she has stated.

Dale MacArthur and Teagan Littlechief were the performers showcased.

There was drumming and singing.

Face painting was a hit with children and adults alike.
