Arcola: A Tale of Two Towns Lynne Bell

Lifelong Arcola resident Marjorie Askin is accustomed to welcoming people to her hometown in small-town Saskatchewan - but about a year ago, she was approached via Facebook and discovered that Arcola, Saskatchewan has an enquiring admirer - a woman named Liliana Calzolari from Arcola, Italy.

Although the prairie town bears the same name as its European counterpart, the origins of Arcola, Saskatchewan’s name are unclear. However, over the years, citizens from Saskatchewan’s Arcola have made intermittent contact with citizens of Italy’s Arcola - with Arcola (Sask.) students corresponding with their Italian counterparts in the early 1990s as part of a class project and a few area residents viewing the mountainous terrain and narrow roads near Arcola, Italy from the window of a European tour bus.

And while Arcola Saskatchewan is a picturesque prairie town with wide-open spaces and a population under 1,000 - Arcola, Italy boasts a population of over 10,000 people in a community surrounded by mountains and narrow roadways.

“It’s near Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus,” explains Askin, who says she was surprised when Calzolari first contacted her.

“I had posted a few things about our Arcola on Facebook,” explains Askin. “She somehow saw it and sent me a message saying she was intrigued with Arcola, Canada and wanted to learn more. She’s a young woman and she was very interested and curious about Arcola on the Canadian prairies.”

“I sent her a picture of our cenotaph and explained that it honoured our young men who had served overseas and I also told her it was made from Carrara marble from Italy.”

“I told her: ‘It was

made in your country and shipped over to Canada in the 1920s,’” adds Askin. “And I explained to her who it honoured and why, and how proud our town is of those people.”

“She wrote me back, thanking me and saying how beautiful it was that the statue representing our Canadian heroes was made from Carrara marble.’”

Since then, Calzolari has enlarged her circle of correspondents with links to Canada’s Arcola, and Askin says she is happy to act as a virtual tour guide and unofficial ambassadress for her hometown.

“My husband Bud (Askin) and I have lived here in Arcola all of our lives,” she says. “We’re very proud of our town and when I talk to Liliana, I talk about how things were and how things have changed.”

“It’s easy for me to talk about Arcola, because we would never consider living anywhere else,” says Askin.

“It’s our home and we love it.”

Thank you . . . and see you later

Anyone who knows me knows that I hate goodbyes. With me, it’s always: “I hate goodbyes, so I’ll see you later.”

Therefore, just when I thought I could sneak out of the office with the mouse pad featuring my daughters’ faces tucked safely in my purse, the beating heart and backbone of our office - Karen Mitchell-Steele - reminded me that I really

should write a farewell column. (The good news: I negotiated a no-photo clause!).

Anyhow, after four years, I will be leaving The Observer for a new adventure. And aside from the emotional impact of moving on, writing this little piece is so overwhelming, because I have so many fond memories, so many epic (and eclectic) experiences to recount, and most of all, so very many people to thank.

It would be impossible to name you all, so I won’t even try - but the common threads that run through my time here are the kindness and patience you have granted me, in both the personal and professional arenas.

Whether it’s giving me driving directions, explaining what a side-by-side is, replying to my calls

(and texts and Facebook messages...), sending me pictures, posing for pictures and much, much more the bottom line is: It has been both a privilege and a pleasure to share your stories with the wider world.

And I know that you will extend that same thoughtfulness and kind consideration to The Observer’s new reporter, Theresa Nett, who comes to us by way of Vancouver.

To my co-workers, past and present, thank you.

To my landlady (you know who you are!), thank you. To my family and friends who have endured my chronic absenteeism, thank you. And to everyone who has shared their stories with me, I am touched that you entrusted me with these chapters in your lives.

New Observer reporter to join newspaper The Carlyle Observer gives a warm welcome to our new reporter, Theresa Nett. After spending time working for the Edmonton Sun Daily and Yellow Pages earlier in her career, Theresa recently worked at the weekly community newspaper Melita New Era. Her interest in writing started at a very young age with poetry and short stories. When teachers, family and friends started to notice her skills in English Literature and ability to memorize and recite poetry, she would also challenge them to give her a word and she would quickly write an entire poem

about that word.

Theresa decided to pursue writing as an adult and received her Journalism Diploma shortly after obtaining an Associate of Arts Degree in Creative Writing. During her time attending post-secondary, she also started her own business as a yacht detailer. After graduating, she kept running her successful business, keeping her close to the water and her love of the outdoors. Eventually she would close her business and head out to the prairies to focus on her true love of writing.

Now in Carlyle, she loves the opportunity to set-

tle into a new home and get to know the interesting aspects that make the community and surrounding area unique. Her journalistic integrity, ability to seek out facts and truth, and skills as a good storyteller are just some of the assets she brings to both the newspaper and the communities she is now happy to serve. The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to several calls to service from Thursday, July 5 to the morning of Thursday, July 12.

911/False alarms A motorist called police for advice while they were caught driving in heavy rain and were unable to see. RCMP members provided advice.

Members responded to a 911 call originating from an unknown number.

Two calls to 911 were the result of a static line problem originating with SaskTel. An alarm went off at a business in Carlyle in error.

False alarms occurred at a business in Arcola, a business in Carlyle, and at a residence in Redvers.

Alcohol-related offences An intoxicated individual was arrested and placed in cells until sober after causing problems at a local event.

An individual was fined $200 for public intoxication.

A motorist received a warning for having liquor in their vehicle.

They also received a warning for inadequate headlights. This individual was fined $100 for failing to produce vehicle registration at the request of a police officer.

In two separate incidents, two intoxicated individuals were arrested and lodged in cells until sober.

Members made patrols at Kenosee Lake with conservation officers. A boater received a 72-hour suspension when it was determined that this individual had too much to drink, but was not impaired. “Remember, you can be charged with impaired driving on a boat,” says Staff Sgt. Darren Simons of the Carlyle RCMP detachment.

Members responded to two separate reports of an impaired drivers one in Wawota and one on Hwy 9.

Patrols were made when RCMP received reports of an intoxicated individual at an area event.

Animal call A concerned caller advised RCMP about a dog left outdoors in extreme heat.

Police responded to a call in which an individual reported that their dog was shot with a pellet gun. Members found no evidence this had transpired.

Police are investigating the report of a dog on the loose in Redvers.

Arson Members responded to a report of an alleged arson in which a campfire ignited a nearby vehicle in the Carlyle area. This incident was deemed to be an accident by police.

Assistance Police responded to a call from an individual reporting a suspicious individual in the bushes behind a residence.

Members of the Carlyle RCMP detachment assisted the Prosecutor’s Office in Regina regarding a request for documents.

Police responded to a call regarding a youth walking on Hwy 9.

RCMP were called with a request for assistance with regards to an estate. Police advised the caller that this was a civil matter.

Members received a call reporting a hitch hiker, requesting that police give this person a ride.

Breach of conditions Members dealt with a youth who was not complying with their release conditions. Police deemed that this individual was not in a position to be charged.

Child Welfare Act Members dealt with four Child Welfare Act files.

Disturbing the peace A motorist’s vehicle door blew open in high

wind and this resulted in the door bumping another vehicle. A confrontation ensued and police are still investigating.

An individual was causing a disturbance in Moose Mountain Provincial Park. This individual wa arrested and lodged in custody.

A youth was arrested in Moose Mountain Provincial Park for causing a disturbance. This individual was arrested and lodged in custody until he could be picked up.

Members were called to keep the peace during a break-up.

An incident in which an individual caused a disturbance at the Redvers Golf Course is still under investgation.

Drugs RCMP are currently investigating a report regarding a person selling illegal drugs.

Collision(s)/Traffic offences A motorist struck a transformer with their vehicle and took off.

This matter is under investigation.

RCMP are currently investigating a hit-andrun which occurred at a Kenosee Lake-area business.

A driver made a report to police that they bumped into a pedestrian with their vehicle while they were backing up. Both people were unhurt and the driver issued an apology.

An individual received a warning from police for driving in the wrong lane after they veered over the centre line.

A motorist received a warning from police for driving with undue care and attention.

Police located the vehicle in question after receiving a report of an erratic driver.

Members responded to reports of erratic drivers on Hwys 9 and 13.

RCMP dealt with several speeding offences, with fines reaching $292.

An individual called the RCMP and reported

speeding drivers. However, members were unable to resolve this issue, because the caller was rude and would not cooperate with police. Staff Sgt. Simons says: “Remember, we can’t help you, if you won’t help us.”

Two motorists were fined $175 each for transporting trailers with no insurance.

RCMP issued several vehicle inspection tickets and/or warnings this week.

Indecent acts RCMP received a report of a male walking in his underwear in Cannington Manor. This matter is still under investigation.

Police are investigating a report of an individual in Arcola who exposed themselves.

Mental Health Act RCMP responded to three calls under the Mental Health Act. Sexual assault A sexual assault investgation has led to charges being laid..

Theft RCMP are currently investigating a theft which occurred at the liquor store in Carlyle.

An individual reported a stolen vehicle to police. However, this matter was concluded when it was determined that a friend had simply borrowed it.

Two girls’ bicycles were stolen at Kenosee Lake. One is a pink girls’ bike with an ice cream decal. The other bike is a pink girls’ mountain bike with green and blue decals.

A bicycle was reported stolen at Moose Mountain Provincial Park.

A report of theft under $5,000 was deemed by police to be unfounded.

Uttering threats A report of uttering threats originating from Redvers is still under investigation.

A concerned individual reported that a person with possible mental health issues was uttering threats.

“God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living” (Wisdom 1:13). “For he created all things so that they might exist; the generative forces of the world are wholesome, and there is no destructive poison in them, and the dominion of Hades is not on earth.

For righteousness is immortal” (Wisdom 1:14– 15).

“For God created us for incorruption, and made us in the image of his own eternity, but through the devil’s envy death entered the world, and those who belong to his company experience it” (Wisdom 2:23 – 24).

If God created the world and “it was very good” (Genesis), how do we understand evil that exists naturally and morally? In nature God would not allow “any evil whatsoever to exist in his works if he were not so all-powerful and good as to cause good to emerge from evil itself” (St Augustine).

Two excellent examples of this are David being sold into Egypt by his brothers so that he could save the many from famine, and the betrayal and murder of Jesus to make salvation possible for all.

Christ imparted by Baptism turns us back toward God and summons us to do spiritual battle for God’s Kingdom.

Christ came to bring us new life! The Church, the Sacraments, prayer, good works and love move the Kingdom of God forward.

We may say we “experience” death as our human bodies fail. But that is merely our bodies? We are spirit and soul, and when we leave this human body behind our life becomes more wonderous.

In the life of Cecille Paschner this happened before physical death.

In March 2013 doctors found a 29-centimeter malignant tumor in her right breast and diagnosed her with stagethree breast cancer.

By November 2015 the now stage four cancer had entered her liver and the bones of her lower back. Paschner reconnected with God and attended daily masses and revisiting the blessed sacraments. She now decided to use her talents to help spread the word of the Lord.

Paschner published a prayer book and changed the connotation of cancer by putting Christ into CANCER - Christ, Adoration, Novena, Confession, Eucharist and Rosary.

“My daily medication was the Eucharist...

Cancer is a very painful journey, but I don’t take any pain medication because I have the Rosary,” Paschner said.

On March 24, 2017, Paschner’s oncologist told her that she was cancer-free. In thanksgiving, she is giving away copies of her prayer book.

Examples of cures like Paschner’s do not

give us false hope and false expectations. We will experience physical sickness, pain and death

as a natural course, but we are filled with hope in the joys of the kingdom restored by our redemp-

tion in Christ.

A proverb for every need

By Linda Wegner Our house is full of laughter, good food and great joy this week and it’s given me cause to rejoice. Here’s one reason: When I put my first thoughts based on the Book of Proverbs into a weekly piece, I believed that it was a “one shot deal”. Over the past six months as I’ve shared weekly insights from this Old Testament book, I quickly realized that nothing’s changed over the centuries; struggles are common, selfishness crops up in every person but wisdom teaches us how to avoid a lot of pain.

Those musings appeared in 2018 publications but my very first of-

fering was published in either 1997 or 1998 when the editor of a brandnew, Saskatchewan rural weekly believed in me.

Topics were different back then but I’ve never lost my enthusiasm and gratitude for the privilege of having my work appear in many more publications since then.

Back then I didn’t imagine the wonderful response I’d receive and I still find myself praying each week for God’s direction, knowing I’ll be called upon to live out the message before it appears on my computer screen.

Though not everyone who reads these columns is a published author, everyone of us has

experienced the good and bad of life. Weeping and rejoicing are synonymous with living.

As a wife, mother and grandmother I’ve known both victory and defeat but in all those times, I’ve known what it means to be blessed. There’s nothing much better than a family that loves each other, gets along with each other, and gets together whenever possible. This has been that kind of week for us and it’s it lightened my heart and formed the basis for this week’s article; after all, celebrating a half century of marriage won’t happen again, at least not for us.

In everything, give thanks.

Crop report for period July 3 to 9 Crops across the province are advancing nicely, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report.

Eighty-one per cent of fall cereals, 77 per cent of spring cereals, 75 per cent of oilseeds and 79 per cent of pulse crops are at their normal stages of development for this time of year. The condition of the majority of crops ranges from fair to excellent.

Rainfall ranged from trace amounts to 72 mm in the Rhein area.

The Whitewood area reported 41 mm of rain, the Mossbank area 38 mm, the Harris area 52 mm, the Nipawin area 64 mm and the Frenchman Butte area 31 mm.

Some areas in the southwestern and west-central areas are still in need of significant rain to help crops develop and fill.

Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as three per cent surplus, 59 per cent adequate, 32 per cent short and six per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as two per cent surplus, 52 per cent adequate, 32 per cent short and 14 per cent very short.

Livestock producers are busy haying, although there have been frequent delays due to rain and high humidity.

Twenty-two per cent of the hay crop has been cut and 26 per cent

baled or put into silage.

Hay quality at this time is rated as eight per cent excellent, 62 per cent good, 27 per cent fair and two per cent poor.

Many swaths are significantly smaller than normal and pasture growth has been limited in some areas.

Producers have been applying fungicides for diseases such as sclerotinia in canola and fusarium head blight in cereals. High temperatures and lack of rain continue to damage crops in many areas of the province.

Other sources of crop damage this week include localized flooding, strong winds and hail.

Leaf spot diseases and root rot have also caused some damage. With the recent heat, many flowering crops, such as canola, have been damaged by heat blasting.

More NBA power in the West after James joins Lakers do in L.A. with the Lakers what he did with the Cleveland Cavaliers — that is, carry a cast of journeymen and unknowns on his back all the way to the NBA Finals — remains to be seen. The Lakers are a team on the rise, to be sure, but the league’s powerhouses reside in the Western Conference and it would take extraordinarily spectacular play for James to duplicate in L.A what he did when he went to Miami during his first free agent foray. He joined Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade with the Heat and they captured two NBA titles before his conscience brought him back home to Cleveland, near where he grew up in Akron.

Teams led by James have made it to an astonishing eight consecutive NBA Finals. Yes, he’s the reason. But if he can drag or carry the Lakers past the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets to make it nine in a row, his brilliance will be cemented in NBA lore.

A wise newspaper headline writer coined that title and it’s a good one, because LeBron James is now Mr. L.A. and it probably won’t be long before he owns much of Southern California, Hollywood included.

The planet’s best basketball player took advantage of his free agent status to decide he wanted to play out his National Basketball Association career in the Hollywood Hills, where average people become stars overnight and arriving superstars become … well, what?

Megastars? Megasuperstars? Galacticstars?

They might just replace that iconic Hollywood sign with a picture of LeBron and get it over with.

Whether James can

James agreed to join the Lakers, Golden State went out and signed allstar centre DeMarcus Cousins from New Orleans, giving the reigning NBA champs yet another all-star starter, joining Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green on what is arguably the best starting five in the history of the league.

But can the concentration of power in the NBA’s West be good for the league in the long run? Theoretically, the Warriors should romp to about 75 wins in 82 starts next year. Houston games will be fun to watch because of James Harden and Chris Paul, and the Lakers will be must-see TV just to see how high James can carry the Lakers, who finished 35-47 last year.

But the rest of the teams have no chance.

Play in the East — sorry, Raptors fans — will be ho-hum with Philly, Boston and Toronto vying to determine which team will almost assuredly be the lamb in the NBA Finals slaughter.

Changes in eating habits over the past few decades

By Calvin Daniels It is rather obvious what we eat, and where we access our food has changed significantly over the past few decades.

In many ways I suppose my own experience is a textbook example of the change.

Growing up on a Saskatchewan farm through the 1960s and ‘70s the food on the kitchen table came primarily from the farm itself. The small farm was a mixed operation – most were -- and that meant a barn full of pigs, which in turn meant pork was on the table almost daily.

When it wasn’t pork, the meat of the day was usually chicken, as my mother always had a boxful of chicks purchased in the spring to be butchered in the fall, a daylong event I vividly remember as one of those things which very directly connected the family to the process of filling the deep freeze.

And it was a huge deepfreeze, one that needed to be large because in addition to a butchered hog, and flock of chickens added to it each fall, there had to be room for carrots, peas, beans and other vegetables from a huge garden.

If the deep freeze filled, there was always a root cellar, or canning to preserve more veggies for the winter.

Of course in that era everyone had a garden, as I recall helping my grandparents weed their rather large garden when they retired to town.

People, at least those in rural Saskatchewan raised, processed much of the food they ate.

Fast forward to today and mixed farms are largely a thing of the past. Most grain farms are massive with no time to raise a few chickens, or a pig or two for the freezer.

Gardens even are increasingly rare.

A drive around Yorkton, a midsize rural city, quickly shows backyard vegetable gardens are few and far between.

And, you can find more and more homes without a deep freeze to store food. It is much more common to make more trips to the grocery store, and to rely on pre-canned and preserved foods.

It would be interesting to study how many families today can their own fruits, freeze their own vegetables, or raise their own meat?

Anecdotally, I am confident to suggest it is a fraction of what there would have been through my teen years (1973-’79).

There are a couple of things we can draw from the significant change.

The first is that people today have a huge confidence in the food they find in stores. At times we hear of ripples of discontent in regards to food safety, but the majority recognize our food supple in generally safe.

The reliance on store-bought food also suggests we recognize our food is relatively cheap.

Toss the non-food items out of the store cart, and food is reasonably priced.

But, there is a cloud over our change in pattern regarding where we get food, and that is if our processed foods are as healthy as what they should be?

That is a question I will look at in more depth in next week’s column.

The next rescue effort We were hungry for updates; any sort of information about the boys on the soccer team and their coach. After each update we waited for morning to come in Thailand so the search effort could resume.

Their story captivated attention in all corners of the world. A young team heads out My Outlook after soccer practice to explore a Shelley Luedtke cave in the mountains of northern Thailand. A park ranger notices a bunch of bicycles still chained up outside the entrance to a cave after the park has closed. Something’s not right. A search and rescue effort begins.

Clues are discovered; like soccer shoes and sandals, but it’s rainy season and the waters are rising.

The search effort has to be suspended.

Officials warn time is running out. High water and lack of airflow are just two of the concerns. Experts begin arriving from other countries to assist in the effort.

Heavy duty pumps are brought in. Drones and thermal cameras are put to use. Intense rain hampers the effort. More experts arrive.

Then…celebrations erupt when rescuers reach a chamber and find all 12 boys and their coach alive. But officials temper the enthusiasm with the reminder that the ordeal is far from over. Getting them out will require tremendous preparation and instruction.

A rescuer has died. A devastating loss, and a grim reminder how dangerous this is. Is it possible for the world to hold its collective breath? It would seem this is what we have been doing.

We are learning the names of some of the boys.

Peerapat turned 16 the day he went into the cave.

It was also Pipat’s birthday. Prajak turned 15 while in the cave. His grandmother is grateful for the international effort being put in to rescue the boys. “I thank every country, everyone helping the kids to get out. It’s like a miracle,” she remarked.

People from faith communities gather to pray for the rain to stop, for safety for rescuers and for

strength for the team members and their coach.

Divers have delivered food, foil blankets and other supplies to the boys. The team is able to write letters to their families telling them they are okay and many request favourite foods once they are out.

But getting them out will be so risky. The boys need to be taught to swim and use a breathing apparatus, and time is not on their side.

Guided by divers through murky waters and flooded tunnels, the first of the boys are brought out safely. What a joyous moment! Then attention quickly turns back to the others still in peril in the cave.

Four more are rescued. The waiting continues.

Then the glorious news that the remaining boys and coach are out. All are safe, thanks to the heroic efforts of those who put their own lives in danger to save them. Dozens of divers, hundreds of volunteers, 18 days, and now 12 boys and their coach are rescued and receiving the care they need. If ever there was a time when the word jubilation was appropriate--this has to be it.

So what comes next? Not just for these children, but so many other children in need of saving. Like the 385 million living in extreme poverty. The 223 million who are victims of sexual violence. Or the 35,000 under the age of 5 who die each day of preventable diseases. All of these children are in desperate situations and in need of a rescue.

We have seen what can be achieved when the will is there to be part of a saving effort. But it doesn’t take Navy Seal Training or placing our lives in jeopardy--though it might require sacrifice. But if we are willing, we can be part of the effort to change the circumstances of children living in desperation.

Perhaps even save a life.

A team of skilled, selfless individuals mounted an enormous effort to bring about a happy ending in Thailand. They saved Peerapat, Pipat, Prajak, and others. Imagine what the rest of us could do if we had the collective will to initiate a push to save more. On July 10 we rejoiced when the rescue effort brought out the last of the 12 children. Which 12 can we save today? That’s my outlook.

The most tax-efficient strategy is to hold your fixed-income investments in a RRSP or TFSA, and stocks and equity mutual funds in a non-registered account (to the extent your investments exceed your RRSP and TFSA contribution room). This is because RRSP withdrawals are included in your taxable income in the year of the withdrawal and are taxed at your marginal tax rate, but stocks and equity mutual funds held in a non-registered account are taxed at a more favourable capital gains inclusion rate when you dispose of them. As well, dividends from most Canadian corporations are eligible for the dividend tax credit.

Pay down debt It’s a fact: Simply paying down debt delivers a risk-free, after-tax return which may be comparable to many investments.

Start with costly, high-interest credit card debt and then pay

down non-deductible debt such as your home mortgage – a single prepayment could save hundreds, even thousands of dollars in interest payments.

For parents and grandparents Establish and contribute to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your children or grandchildren. An RESP is the most effective way to create an education fund that grows to offset the future cost of education.

For (some) business owners It can make sense to build a retirement investment portfolio inside your company instead of paying out that corporate income to a shareholder.

The company can also fund an Individual Pension Plan (IPP), which has the potential for greater tax-assisted savings than through RRSPs or Defined Contribution pension plans.

Be aware, however, that these business-related options require careful planning and the guidance of financial and legal professionals.

HEALTH HUB Is there a cure for hypochondria?

People with hypochondria (also known as health anxiety or hypochondriasis) have an obsessive attitude about their health and the condition of their body. These individuals are inordinately worried about getting sick and tend to exaggerate the severity of any symptoms they experience. It can be hard to convince a person with hypochondria that they aren’t in any actual danger.

The constant fear of falling ill can lead to symptoms such as vertigo, heart palpitations, anxiety attacks and even depression.

Therapy Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people overcome hypochondria by reinforcing the fact that the problem is first and foremost a psychological one. Therapists will focus on shifting perspectives, getting used to the fear, and reducing harmful behaviours such as repeated visits to the doctor or looking up symptoms online.

Active living Leading an active life-

People with hypochondria vastly overestimate the severity of even the most minor health symptoms. style is another way to cope with health anxiety: being busy leaves less time for negative thoughts to form.

Relaxation techniques such as meditation are also effective in combatting stress. Furthermore, it’s a good idea to stay away

from negative people who are always discussing their own health ailments. Finally, those who can’t stop themselves from researching their symptoms should at least make sure that their sources are sound.

Local Filipino basketball tournament a success

Elmer Jove hosted the Filipino Basketball tournament in the gym of Gordon F. Kells High School July 14 and 15 in Carlyle, and his first year was a success.

“Filipino people love to play basketball. We are very passionate with it,” said Jove, “We have fun playing together and competing. It’s almost like hockey. Canadians are passionate about hockey. Filipino’s, even though we lack height, love to play basketball.”

Of the seven teams playing in the tournament this year, five were

senior and two were junior. One of the junior teams had a mix of Canadian and Filipino players, and Jove said it gave him an idea. “We are thinking in Carlyle to make a tournament once a week, inviting Canadian players too, and having mixed teams play. It adds balance.”

The Filipino Basketball Tournament has been running for nine years. When it initially started it ran for six years straight, then the host at the time retired and the tournament had to be postponed for two years until Jove became the new host and organizer for the event.

Teams have come as far away as Regina in the past to the tournament, but its main focus is on the southeast corner of Saskatchewan. This year teams competed from Oxbow, Kipling, Estevan, Weyburn, Carnduff, and Carlyle. In the final match, Weyburn and Carlyle squared off, with Weyburn pulling off a close win.

“I’m taking their trophy to Regina to get it engraved,” said Jove, who himself has been playing basketball for almost 40 years. “I still play, but I’m only good for five minutes of competitive (basketball) now.”

The Carlyle Cubs Pee Wee AA team will compete against six other teams from throughout Saskatchewan as they travel to the 2018 Pee Wee AA Tier 5 Provincial Championships at Weyburn’s Jubilee Park, July 27-29.

The Cubs - coached

by Jamie Barnett and Scott Robertson - will take on the Regina Buffalos, the Regina Pacers, the Saskatchewan Giants Sluggers, the Saskatoon Blue Jay Warriors, the Saskatoon Braves Bandits and the hometown Weyburn Beavers.

Coach Jamie Barnett says the roster of of players is made up of 13 under-12s from Arcola, Carlyle and Oxbow.

“In Carlyle, we had 18 kids in pee wee ball this year, so we had to split teams.”

“When we decided to put a provincial team together, there were a total of 13 kids from those teams who were able to compete in Weyburn, due to summer holidays, so we have seven players from Carlyle, two from Arcola and four boys from Oxbow.”

Team members are: Kale Arndt, Porter Barnett, Grady Benjamin, Tayson Dietz, Thomas Harrison, Jakson Humphries, Zane Karlunchuk, Ethan Lees, Kash Millions, Rocco Perrot, Blake Robertson, Sam Thompson and Max Waugh.

“We decided at the end of May that we’d put a team together and league playoffs just ended the last week of June, so we’re all working hard to get ready for Weyburn.”

“The team is pretty excited and they all think it’s the big time, so they’re pretty motivated and both the kids and parents are showing and have already shown - a lot of dedication,” says Barnett. “The team has been working hard

and the parents have been great getting them to games and practices.”

“Most of our team were born in 2006 and they’ll be playing teams made up of players who are older than them by one year, so it will be a challenge and a real confidence builder for them.”

“We’re excited to take this on and in addition to the dedication of the team, I’d like to acknowledge the commitment of their parents,

too,” adds Barnett.

“And I’d like to give a big shout-out to PureChem, who have supported the Cubs.”

“They’re a dedicated group of kids from some smaller communities who have banded together to compete against teams from larger centres,” explains Barnett.

“That’s what it takes to field a team, sometimes.”

“They wanted their season to continue and they are ready to compete.”

The Alida and Area 4-H Beef Club held their annual Achievement Day on Monday, June 4th.

The Achievement Day was held in Redvers at the Ag Society Arena (behind the hockey rink).

By Murray Mandryk We can all agree that the end of Greyhound bus service on the prairies is a tragic loss.

We should agree that this was a business decision unfortunately based on changing times and changing economies.

But what seems wrong is the thinking that this somehow proves the Saskatchewan Party government was wrong last year to shudder the Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC).

If anything, it more likely demonstrates that the then-premier Brad Wall government decision in its austerityminded 2017-18 budget was likely right.

Now, don’t get me wrong. This doesn’t mean losing bus service is happy news.

ability to drive.

The closure of STC clearly hurt those who can least afford other options and. One can expect Greyhound’s Western closures will also hit the poorest the hardest.

The Federation of Indigenous Sovereign Nations (FSIN) is right that the Greyhound demise (especially, on the heels of last year’s loss of STC services) will disproportionally hurt its communities.

But the notion from the Sask. Party government that the private sector would come in and take over its nonprofitable routes was nonsensical from the beginning.

As questionable as some of the decisions made by those running STC sometimes were, the publicly owned bus company had long been providing a service no private company wanted to provide.

Why? Well, notwithstanding strategic attempts by Saskatchewan government of all political stripes to cut route, emphasize parcel delivery and provide more luxury services like wifi, nothing seemed to work.

Ridership declined while costs went up and STC did not make a profit in its last 40 years of operation.

Why, then, would

anyone other that government absorb massive annual losses by trying to fulfill the impossible task of delivering passenger service to sparse, smaller rural communities?

In fact, the only profitable route (out of more than 25 routes) for STC for the last couple years was the ReginaSaskatoon-Prince Albert run.

This takes us back to last week’s news that Greyhound was shuddering its services in every Western province except British Columbia.

The company said it based its decision on the fact that ridership has declined 41 per cent since 2010.

This is a stunning number, considering that Greyhound was the only public transportation option to the airlines when it came to moving people between major centres along the Trans-Canada Highway like Winnipeg, Regina and Calgary or up through the Yellowhead Highway from Winnipeg to Saskatoon To Edmonton.

But with gas and diesel creeping back up $1.30 a litre, it’s ready easy to see why Greyhound made this business decision.

So the notion that we are hearing on so-

cial media, largely from those with ties to the NDP, that there would have been some economic windfall awaiting STC had it survived long enough to outlast Greyhound is about as nonsensical as it gets.

A few years back, the Manitoba government even tried to subsidize Greyhound’s route north to rural and northern communities. Those routes were the first to go.

Yes, this has created economic and social hardships for bus users, (although whether the loss of STC will truly create dire risk for First Nation women as was contended at the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women hearings seems difficult to substantiate).

After all, it could be argued that the former NDP government also put rural and northern women in peril a quarter century ago when it was closed rural hospitals.

Unfortunately, this was also one of those necessary austerity measures that governments are sometimes forced to make.

And now the Greyhound decision only underscores that last year’s decisions to shut down STC was one of those unfortunate, unpopular and inevitable decisions.

The Whitewood 4-H Regional held their annual show and sale on July 4th and 5th. This year was the first year of a a two day Regional and new format. On Wednesday the kids competed in Team Grooming and Judging. The extra time allowed every member to compete in team grooming and also gave the kids time to have a mixer with fun games and wiener roast on Wednesday evening.

The show took place on Thursday and the weather co-operated very well and the kids had a nice warm day! This year’s show was dedicated to Sandra Boutin from Whitewood. Our judge for the day was Chad Hollinger from Neudorf and he had 46 steers and 20 females to sort through. Helping out in the ring were William Brimner and Justin Joorisity. Betty Wyatt handed out ribbons, while Dale Easton was the M.C. and Doug Armstrong recorded all of the results of the show. Jim Clemence and Devon Barnard kept the show running smoothly as the marshalers and Katherine Lowenberger was the photographer for the day.

The first event on Wednesday was judging. This year's Cloverbud judges were Brad & Jayne Rutten.

Bar H Land & Cattle from Langbenburg presented Tanner McCormack from Whitewood with a prize for placing first. The Junior Judge was Chris Domoslai and 3H Angus from Whitewood presented an award to Avrielle Brehaut of the Wawota Club for placing first. Allan Hjertas judged the intermediate and senior members. Bailey McCormack placed first in the Intermediate category receiving a prize from Scissors Creek Cattle Co. of Whitewood. Riley Mytopher, from the Kennedy Club, was presented with an award from Eastondale Angus of Wawota for top honours in the Senior age category.

Following judging all of the members got to compete in team grooming. The 60 members were divided into 15 teams with members mixed from the different clubs and age categories. They were given 15 minutes to work as a team to groom a steer or heifer. The top six teams all received prize money from Heartland Livestock in Virden for their efforts in this competition. At the end of the competition the team comprised of Maddison Petracek, Cutter Reid, Ricayla Gawryluk and Tyler Kendal placed first.

The first confirmation classes of the day on Thursday were the steer classes. At the end of the steer show the Grand Champion Steer was awarded to Larissa Rutten from the Wawota Club. She received the trophy from ABC Cattle Co. of Whitewood. The Reserve Champion Steer was won by Cody Reid of the Kennedy Club. He received the award from McCormack Family Ranch at Grenfell. This year a Homeraised Steer class was also added with the judge picking his top 3 steers. The Champion and Reserve Champion steer were homeraised so they were first and second and Morgan Debenham came in third and they won prize money from Shur gain-Trouw Nutrition.

This year’s group of five steers from one club was won by Kennedy, with Whitewood placing second and Wawota placing third. These clubs won prize money from Lankenn Seeds in Langbank. The best pair of steers from one family class was won by Larissa & Cade Rutten of the Wawota Club. They were presented with a plaque from Wawota Agencies.

Cloverbud Judging Tanner McCormack, Whitewood

The heifer show took place in the afternoon. Overall Champion Yearling heifer was won by Maddison Petracek, showing a Charolais heifer, from the Whitewood Club. She won an award from Prairie Bell Speckle Park of Wawota. Calvin Murphy, of the Whitewood Club, won the Reserve Champion Yearling heifer, with his Black Angus heifer, receiving a banner from Bridgeway Livestock of Wawota There were three cloverbud classes this year; calendar year calves, heifers and steers. The calendar year calf class was won by Ryder Beutler of Whitewood. He won a prize from the Jamieson Family in Moosomin. The Cloverbud steer class was won by Haley Debenham of the Kennedy Club and she won a prize from T Bar K Ranch of Wawota. The Cloverbud heifer class was won by Tanner McCormack and he won a prize donated by Flying 3 Farms at Kipling.

The last confirmation class of the day was the continuation females and there were three pairs this year. Rory Greenbank of the Wawota club was awarded Champion Continuation and was presented with an award from Whitewood Outdoor & Pet Supply. Reserve Champion Continuation was won by Blythe Clemence of Kennedy, and she won a prize from Pattison Agriculture in Moosomin. At the end of the day Rory Greenbank won Champion Female with her Continuation Pair and Whitewood Livestock presented her an award. Maddison Petracek from Whitewood won the Reserve Champion Female award with her yearling heifer receiving a prize from the Langbank Co-op.

Junior Judging Alexia Brehaut, Wawota

The last classes of the day were showmanship. This was judged by Brooke Canart and Stacy Lowes of McAuley, MB. Cloverbud showmanship was won by Bailey White of the Whitewood club and she won a prize from VC Hereford Farms of Langenberg. Sydney McCormack of the Whitewood Club won top honors in the Junior division. She was presented with the award from Pat Clements of Wawota. In the Intermediate division Cody Reid of Kennedy was first, winning a prize from Clark Club Calves at Kipling. Calvin Murphy of the Whitewood Club won the Senior Division receiving the Borderland Co-op trophy.

The last awards given out for the day were for top record book. The books were judged by Kerri Bachtold of Whitewood. Alexia Brehaut of Wawota won the Cloverbud division winning a prize from Conexus Credit Union. The junior division was won by Avrielle Brehaut of Wawota and she was awarded a plaque from Federated Co-op Feeds in Moosomin. The Intermediate division winner was Cheyenne Jamieson of Fairmede. She went home with the plaque from Andrew Agencies. Maddison Petracek of the Whitewood club took home the award for top Senior winning the prize from the Whitewood Vet Clinic.

This year's sale was very strong again with 46 steers averaging $2.63/lb (down slightly from last year’s average of $2.70/lb). The steers were auctioned by Rhett Parks of Whitewood. The high selling steer this year sold for $3.75/lb, and was owned by Levi Jamieson of the Fairmede Club.

To end the day the 4-H members, parents, leaders and steer buyers enjoyed a tailgate BBQ that was sponsored by 3M Beef Supplies from Moosomin and Fine Line Designs of Whitewood with Whitewood Livestock supplying the BBQ. Congratulations to all of the members on a great day and thanks to everyone who made this day possible. 4-H is a great program that teaches leadership, dedication and hard work to its members and leaves them with the tools to become great community leaders. Without the dedication of the leaders and volunteers, and without the support of the steer buyers and sponsors, this show would not be possible, and these young members would not have the chance to complete their projects and showcase all of their hard work.

Alida News Submitted by Edel Cowan

I received word that Esther Nelson had passed away on July 2 at the Central Haven Special Care Home in Saskatoon. Esther was predeceased by her husband Bob in 1998. The Nelsons had lived in Redvers from 1967-1980 when they moved to Naicam then in 1993 to Saskatoon. The Nelsons were very close friends of my parents (Lars and Elsie Sandgaard) as well as many other church friends in Redvers. Her funeral service was held July 10 at Acadia McKague’s Funeral Centre. Donations in memory of Esther may be made to Central Haven Special Care Home (Entertainment Fund) 1020 Avenue North, Saskatoon S7L2H7.

The Alida community wishes to extend the best of wishes to Ross McKinna who has moved from Alida to Carnduff and making his home at the Borderline Housing unit. May you enjoy your new home among new friends.

Visiting with Paul and Marina Poulsen are their daughter Nicole Rigo and grandson Zoli. They arrived on July 4 and will be holidaying for most of the month. Her hubby, Zoltan will join them on the 21st and they’ll all spend an extra week before heading back home to Calgary. While here Zoli is participating in swimming lessons and enjoying the pool, as well as visiting our local library for some excellent reading material to pass the time.

Holly Anthony travelled to Emerson, MB on June 30 where she visited with her sister, Linda for a few days holidaying, returning home on July 6.

Visiting with Bob and Cecille Harrison last week (July 8-14) was their niece Terry Cranch and her granddaughter Chloe Cranch. While here Chloe participated in swimming lessons before they headed back to Nipawin, SK. Also visiting was their daughter Bobbi-Jo and grandchildren Chrystal and Carson (Sylvan Lake, AB). The children also participated in swimming lessons and enjoyed time spent at the pool.

Jolene Hoffman arrived July 12 to spend a few days with her parents Margaret and Brian Peet.

While here she watched her youngest son, Cole complete his swimming lessons and she also visited with other family members as well. Connor and Cole accompanied her back home to Viking, AB on Monday, July 16.

The first sets of swimming lessons have now been completed with participants being successful in each of their classes. If you missed this first week of lessons, don’t fret there will be others following shortly. Just give the pool a call or stop by and register for the next classes that will suit your schedule. Play safe, have fun and enjoy the summer at the pool.

The death of Florence (Down)White occurred on June 17th in Regina. She was the widow of Ernie White and she passed away a few days before her 89th birthday. Her funeral service was held at the St. Matthews Anglican Church on June 22.

Marie Vail visited with Leonard and Mary Rance in Carman, MN recently. She then travelled to Hitterdal, Minnesota where she visited with Brian and Vicki and Annie Vail. On her way home she stopped in Winnipeg and saw daughter, Shirley Schur, Granddaughter Kori Christan and Grandson, Mathew Christan and his daughter, Emily.Also visiting with Marie last

weekend was Adam and Zaneta Vail and Ava of Estevan.

D’Arcy Lincoln of Calgary, Helene Lincoln of Yorkton, Althea Lincoln of High River and Lisa Lincoln and Carol Westphal of Wawota travelled to Brandon to attend the funeral of their aunt, Edith (Lincoln) Johnson. She was the last of Alf and Jessie Lincoln’s family and was 94 years old.

Terry Hamilton enjoyed a two-week trip to Maple Creek where he visited his daughter and family, Tracey and Jason Feil and Weston.

His daughter, Jill Willoughby from Medicine Hat also came to Maple Creek for a visit.

Viola Taylor spent

10 days at Doug and Jill Taylor’s home in Windthorst. She was housesitting while, Doug and Jill and girls, Shanay, Jenna and Marissa enjoyed a trip to Niagara Falls.

Some family members of the late Rose(Delarue) Hibbs were on hand when her ashes were interred at the Delarue family plot at the Catholic Cemetery in Wawota. Rose passed away last month in B.C. Some many books, so little time. “A Woman in the Window” by A.J.Finn is a book about Anna Fox who lives alone in NY City. Due to circumstances she is unable to venture outside. She drinks wine, watches old movies and spies on her neighbours.

Cordelia Patton is now in Caronport participating her volleyball training with The Saskatchewan Volleyball Team and then on July 18 she will be heading to Richmond, BC for the playoffs. Good Luck Corelia.

Jeff Cowan, Regina arrived July 13 to the Cowan farm. He visited with his parents, Gray and Edel, brother, Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan as well as with friends Grant and Jenny. He also attended the Boettcher/McNish wedding. He returned home on July 15.

Congratulations to Kara Boettcher and Justin McNish who were married on July 14 at the farm (near Alida) of her parents, Tim and Trudy Boettcher. There were many family members and friends who travelled from near and far to attend the beautiful day. To help end the celebrations was a great display of fireworks. The young couple will reside in their home in Alida. Best wishes Kara and Justin as you continue on your new adventure as husband and wife.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the Junk family on the death of Ken Junk on July 12 in Regina.

Ken is survived by his wife Dina, son Hayden, mother Rose, brothers Lorne and Gary (Brenda), sisters Ardyth (Mike) Philipation, Rhonda (Terry) Morrow, and Carla (Troy) Swanson, as well as many nieces and nephews. Ken was raised and farmed in the Auburnton district on the Junk Farms with his brothers. In 2006 he and his family moved from the farm to Regina.

It is great to see and hear that our Lion’s campground is being utilized this summer. There still are lots of sites available during the next two months.

Lester Maxwell Laird 1935 - 2018

Lester passed away on Friday, July 6, 2018 at the Estevan Regional Nursing Home, Estevan, SK at the age of 82 years. Lester was born on a farm near Creelman, SK to Lillian (née North) and Max Laird on November 15, 1935. Lester enjoyed farming and farmed his family homestead since he was 15 years old as well as raising cattle. He owned and worked in road construction, snow plowing, grain hauling and even worked on the oil rigs for 25 years all while he continued to farm.

He enjoyed going to farm sales, his pets, visiting at home with family and anyone who met Lester always remember him as a wonderful and kind man.

Lester married Marjorie A. Lester was predeceased by his grandparents, Albert and Mary North; parents, Max Laird and Lillian Newman.

Government issues blue-green algae advisory The Water Security Agency and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health are advising the public to avoid swimming in or drinking water where blue-green algae blooms are occurring.

Algae blooms, or heavy concentrations of bluegreen algae, commonly occur during calm, hot weather in areas of lakes and reservoirs with shallow, slow moving or still water that has sufficient nutrients. Pet owners and livestock producers are also advised to keep their animals away from such water.

Algae blooms often give the water a shimmering, foamy pea soup appearance. They are usually blue-green, bright blue, grey or tan in colour. The

recent warm temperatures in the province may result in the quick formation of algal blooms.

The blooms typically last up to three weeks and can be pushed around the lake or reservoir by the wind.

Swimming in or drinking this algae-contaminated water can cause red skin, sore throat, cramps or diarrhea. In addition, caution should be taken when considering the consumption of fish or shellfish caught in areas of a water body where a bloom exists; in particular the internal organs of the fish should not be eaten.

Vertex Resource Group Ltd. acquires Three Star Trucking Acquisition substantially grows Vertex’s fluid hauling capacity, expanding Vertex’s service offering in the United States Sherwood Park, Alberta, July 13, 2018 (TSXV:VTX) - Vertex Resource Group Ltd. (“Vertex” or the “Company”) is pleased to announce that it has acquired Three Star Trucking Ltd. (Three Star), an environmental service company providing fluid hauling service, pressure truck services, hot oilers and combo vac services throughout western Canada on July 12th, 2018 (the “Acquisition”). The acquisition of Three Star will add over 270 pieces of equipment to Vertex’s fleet, making the company’s fleet one of the largest in operations serving Saskatchewan, the Montney, and

the Duvernay resource plays of Alberta and British Columbia.

Established in 1962, Three Star has been a leader in the industry resulting in the successful growth to date and is currently licensed to haul condensate, NGL, butane and propane between Canada and the United States, holding federal transportation licenses in five states. The Acquisition will allow Vertex to continue to develop its customer base and service offerings within the Company’s current operating locations while further expanding into new service offerings and geographical markets including

further expansion into the United States. The Acquisition includes numerous high-pressure fluid hauling trailers that will enable Vertex to begin offering propane, butane and NGL fluid hauling services.

Everyone can watch the species list grow and anyone who makes an observation and posts it will h a v e a chance to win an annual parks pass and two nights of free camping.

Activities and events offered at various provincial parks throughout the week also include artistic performances, films, and sports such as beach volleyball, pickleball and yoga. Exploration and discovery activities are planned too, like the “5 Senses Hike” at Greenwater Lake or “Nature Detectives” at Good Spirit Lake.
