Festival of Dogs supports animal rescues

By Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net The dog days of summer came to the Lions Park soccer field on Sunday, July 14, as dogs and dog lovers alike braved the scorching weather to take part in the Festival of Dogs in support of Angels of Hope Animal Rescue Inc. and Bright Eyes Dog Rescue.

ity equipment to try out, a raffle and for the humans in attendance. A Second Family Dog Lodge, owned and operated by Deb and Blair Andrew of Carlyle, served a BBQ lunch with proceeds going to Angels of Hope Animal Rescue Inc. Despite the multiple water stations and wading pools, the heat was so dangerous to the animals and humans alike that the organizers shortened the timetable up so everyone could head home out of the heat.

Premiers shows how country can work

By Murray Mandryk We have been hearing a lot of late in this next of the woods about how this country just doesn’t work anymore.

One gets the frustration. It’s a big country with a sparse population and an array of interests.

Exactly how rural Saskatchewan people connect with urbanites in downtown Toronto or Frenchspeaking Montreal residents or Eastern Maritimers is often a national mystery.

Regionally, economically and culturally, it would seem as if there is little that we share, making for the easy argument that we would somehow be better off separated.

Recent politics has often fallen into this narrative, driven by the frustration over the perceived impact of federal Liberal government policies like the carbon tax, lack of pipeline development and Bill C-69 that adds environmental restrictions to major infrastructure projects like pipelines.

Obviously, the fact that the West is more affected by matters effecting energy only enhances the notion that those elsewhere in the country don’t get our issues.

But if we are to make an honest assessment of our nation, there are few other considerations to keep in mind.

First, we are the second biggest country in the world, but only the 38th biggest in population. There surely are immense problems with having 37 million people scattered over 9.985 million square kilometres, but it may be better than the alternative.

For the disgruntled muttering about Saskatchewan (1.1 million people) or even Saskatchewan and Alberta (add another 4.3 million people) being better off as separate nation, consider that such a scenario would produced a country with 5.5 people (at most) with a massive land mass.

If Canada doesn’t carry enough weight on the world stage when we encounter trade issues with massive partners like China or the U.S., how would we better off? For that matter how would it be easier to build pipelines to get our oil to port if when we are landlocked?

Maybe those talking separation haven’t clearly thought things through.

But when it comes down to realistic solutions to what is a real problem of our issues not being heard in Ottawa, maybe there are other solutions.

And, surprisingly, maybe one of the best places to start looking for solutions is last week’s gathering of provincial and territorial leaders, the annual Premiers’ Conference now known by the fancier title of the council of the federation (CoF).

Much is being made of the new alliance of conservative premiers that consists of Premier Scott Moe, Ontario’s Doug Ford, Alberta’s Jason Kenney, Manitoba’s Brian Pallister, New Brunswick’s Blaine Higgs, Prince Edward Island’s Dennis King, (to a lesser extent) Quebec’s François Legault.

This loose-knit bunch has grown especially close by the shared opposition to the carbon tax … and their eagerness to see Justin Trudeau change jobs in October. Kenney invited Moe, Higgs and Ford to a “white hat ceremony” at the Calgary Stampede the day before they were to kickoff off the three-day CoF summit that started with a meeting with Indigenous leaders at the Big River First Nation.

There’s little doubt that one of things that unites this group, besides the aforementioned distaste of the carbon tax and Bill C-69, is the desire see Andrew Scheer replace Justin Trudeau as national leader.

But is that necessarily as hideous as some would make it out to be?

Voters have elected provincial governments of a different political stripe than Trudeau to reflect their priorities. It stands to reason that the premiers have ever right to use such forums to make their case.

And, really, shouldn’t we appreciate that conservative premiers from the west, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes can come to a consensus on issues.

Some may suggests it’s just politics, but isn’t this how this country actually can work?

I thoroughly dislike ice cream shops.

Yes, it is a love/hate relationship, not because of the product (which I love) but because of the choices (which I don’t). Offering 40 flavors of ice cream may be a great reason for many to stop and My Outlook check out a shop. For me it’s reaShelley Luedtke son to pass it by. It starts with the cone; sugar, cake, waffle? Do you want it coated in chocolate? Carmel? Rainbow sprinkles? Then I am left staring into long lines of freezers trying to narrow down my ice cream choice. Espresso fudge to watermelon, green tea to jalapeno, mint chocolate chip to mango. Too many to choose from. But there’s more.

Some places have a huge selection of mix-ins.

Candies, fruits and nuts are chopped and added to whatever flavor you’ve finally chosen and then…just when you think you are done…you have to choose from the range of toppings to finish off the creation.

When you’ve made it through the line you have either a cacophony of flavors blending brilliantly together or a ‘what-was-I-thinking’ shake of the head.

I find myself in that same vortex when I look for something to watch at the end of a long day. My husband and I go through the “you choose”, “no, you choose” dance as we click our way through thousands of options on one of the streaming services we have…only to end up watching something we’ve already seen. We’re not alone. Despite new shows and movies continually being added, a lot of viewers end up returning to something they’ve watched before.

Factors impacting that include time of day and day of the week, but others point to the overwhelming options that make it too difficult to make a decision.

Customers end up going back to what they know.

We are a culture confronted by option overload.

ordering system to help you navigate selections. Yes, 14 steps to get a cup of coffee. One of its competitors boasts 80,000 possible beverage combinations. My order? Small coffee. Black. I know, just think about what I am missing out on.

Which is the point. Saying ‘yes’ to one option causes us to re-think what we might be saying ‘no’ to, and we become ambivalent about our selection because something else may be so much better.

While most businesses try to dazzle us with endless options, one company has been extremely successful by stocking fewer choices of any particular item.

They work on the premise that offering customers too many options can be a deterrent to buying, and their success demonstrates they are quite correct.

While their competitors offer upwards of 150,000 items, this company has less than 3,500. Some may disagree with the premise, but the proof is in their profits--which continue to rise.

One of the leading studies in this area found that customers presented with six varieties of jam were ten times more likely to buy a jar than those having to choose from 24 different jams. In another study, results of MRI scans indicate that when test subjects were given a selection of landscapes to have printed on a souvenir coffee mug, brain activity was highest when fewer options were given. Although we may think we want more options, it seems we’re actually more comfortable, and more decisive, with fewer.

We wear 50% of what is in our closets, and despite access to an abundance of ingredients, research suggests most of us rotate through about nine menu plans.

We can’t read all the books, visit all the places, or taste all the ice cream we may wish to, but then again we shouldn’t see that as limiting. We need to be bold and adventurous, excited and undaunted, but it means little if we’re constantly looking to our left or right at what we might be doing instead. Far more important than worrying about what we might be missing, is finding delight in the moment and enjoying what we have. That’s my outlook.

Financial Focus Managing Your Money Report: women worried about retirement According to an IG study*, recently retired women are more worried than their male counterparts about stretching funds over their remaining years. This heightened concern may be related to the well-known fact that, statistically speaking, women generally live longer than men. Another likely contributor is that, while working, women tend to earn less than men. In a nutshell, women have less money to spread over more years.

Financial priorities are also different among retired women and men. The study found that it’s more important for women to leave behind money for

family and charities, by a margin of 14%. When asked what they would do with an unexpected windfall, 67% of women said they were likely to give money to charity, while 47% of men said the same.

Overspending vs. underliving Of course, overspending in retirement can present a problem -- but what about underliving? If fear of running out of money makes you ultra-conservative, you may pass on activities that help you fully enjoy your golden years.

For example, travel was high on the list of priorities for pre-retirees in the study. The vast majority of women (81%) and

men (89%) intend to spend money during retirement on things they want, such as trips and hobbies. But nearly two-thirds of recent retirees find it hard to strike a balance between making their money last and enjoying retirement. Interestingly, this sentiment was expressed more often by survey respondents who don’t work with a financial advisor.

The key, it seems, to fully enjoying retirement is preparation. A Statistics Canada study using data from the 2014 Canadian Financial Capability Survey** concluded that respondents who rely on advice from a financial advisor have increased levels

of financial knowledge.

How to attract birds to your yard Do you love to wake up to the sound of songbirds?

If you’d like to attract more birds to your yard, the key is to provide them with food, water and shelter. Here’s what you need to know.

Food It may take several weeks for the local birdlife to notice but hanging a feeder or two is a surefire way to attract them to your yard. Fill the birdfeeders with nutrient-rich seeds like black-oil sunflower, safflower and thistle. Avoid buying premixed birdseed from a big box store, as they’re usually packed with filler that birds don’t enjoy.

Water Some birds are happy to use a birdbath, but the sound of moving water is a better way to signal that a drink and bath is available. Fountains, drippers and misters are readily available at pet supply stores.

Shelter Wild birds need safe places to raise their young and to protect themselves from predators and the elements. You can provide roost boxes to shelter them from bad weather and birdhouses where they can nest and lay eggs.

Finally, consider planting native shrubs and flowers in your yard. These will provide both food and shelter for local

birds and require very little maintenance.

How to attract hummingbirds While native, nectar-producing flo¬wers will help attract hummingbirds, another

way to invite these tiny birds to your yard is to hang feeders filled with nectar. Simply boil four parts water with one part white sugar for about two minutes, and fill the feeder.

Be sure to change the sugar-water regularly.

The Whitewood 4-H Regional held their annual show and sale on July 3rd and 4th. This year was the second year of a two day Regional and new format. On Wednesday the kids competed in Team Grooming and Judging. The extra time allowed every member to compete in team grooming and also gave the kids time to have a mixer with fun games and wiener roast on Wednesday evening.

The show took place on Thursday and the weather co-operated very well and the kids had a nice warm day! This year’s show was dedicated to Darren & Darlene Fisk of Moosomin. Our judges for the day were Carman & Donna Jackson from Inglis, MB and they had 35 steers and 26 females to sort through.

Helping out in the ring were Morgan Fisk, Blythe Clemence & Levi Dayman. Reina Murphy handed out ribbons, while Dale Easton was the M.C. and Wendy Brehaut recorded all of the results of the show.

Bill Domoslai and Cody Fisk kept the show running smoothly as the marshalers and Jenna Loveridge was the photographer for the day.

The first event on Wednesday was judging. This year's Cloverbud judge was Wacey McCaw. Bar H Land & Cattle from Langbenburg presented Tanner McCormack from Whitewood with a prize for placing first, for the second year in a row. The Junior Judge was Blythe Clemence and 3H Angus from Lanigan presented an award to Avrielle Brehaut of the Wawota Club for placing first, also for the second year in a row. Robin Hogberg judged the intermediate and senior members. Jordan Dorrance from the Wawota club placed first in the Intermediate category receiving a prize from Scissors Creek Cattle Co. of Whitewood. Bailey McCormack from the Whitewood Club was presented with an award from Eastondale Angus of Wawota for top honours in the Senior age category.

Following judging all of the members got to compete in team grooming. The 52 members were divided into 12 teams with members mixed from the different clubs and age categories. They were given 15 minutes to work as a team to groom a steer or heifer. The top six teams all received prize money from Heartland Livestock in Virden for their efforts in this competition. At the end of the competition the team comprised of Calvin Murphy, Alexys Roppel, Rory Greenbank and Wyatt Beutler won first place.

Reserve Grand Champion Steer Haley Debenham, Kennedy

Reserve Grand Champion Female Cheyenne Jamieson, Fairmede

The first confirmation classes of the day on Thursday were the steer classes. At the end of the steer show the Grand Champion Steer was awarded to Cody Reid from the Kennedy Club. He received the trophy from ABC Cattle Co. of Whitewood. The Reserve Champion Steer was won by Haley Debenham, also of the Kennedy Club. She received the award from McCormack Family Ranch at Grenfell.

The Champion steer owned by Cody Reid also won top honours in the Homeraised steer class. Haley Debenham was second in this class with Alex Reid placing third. These members won prize money from Shur gain-Trouw Nutrition This year’s group of five steers from one club was won by Kennedy, with Wawota placing second and Whitewood placing third. These clubs won prize money from Lankenn Seeds in Langbank. The best pair of steers from one family class was won by Avrielle & Alexia Brehaut of the Wawota Club. They were presented with a plaque from Andrew Agencies.

Cloverbud Judging Tanner McCormack, Whitewood

The heifer show took place in the afternoon. Overall Champion Yearling heifer was won by Alexys Roppel, showing a Charolais heifer, from the Kennedy Club. She won a banner from Prairie Bell Speckle Park of Wawota. Sydney Dorrance, of the Wawota Club, won the Reserve Champion Yearling heifer, with her Red Angus heifer, receiving a banner from Bridgeway Livestock of Wawota

Cloverbud Record Book Nate Greenbank, Fairmede

There were three cloverbud classes this year; calendar year calves, heifers and steers. The calendar year calf class was won by Reid Beutler of Whitewood. He won a prize from the Jamieson Family in Moosomin. The Cloverbud steer class was won by Abilene Hanson of the Kennedy Club and she won a prize from T Bar K Ranch of Wawota. The Cloverbud heifer class was won by Bailey White of the Whitewood club and she won a prize donated by Flying 3 Farms at Kipling.

The last confirmation class of the day was the continuation females and there were six pairs this year.

Darby McCormack of the Whitewood club was awarded Champion Continuation and was presented with an award from Whitewood Outdoor & Pet Supply. Reserve Champion Continuation was won by Cheyenne Jamieson of Fairmede, and she won a prize from Pattison Agriculture in Moosomin. At the end of the day Darby McCormack won Champion Female with his Continuation Pair and Whitewood Livestock presented him an award. Reserve Champion Female went to Cheyenne Jamieson with her continuation pair receiving a prize from the Langbank Co-op.

The last classes of the day were showmanship. This was judged by Erika Easton of Wawota. Cloverbud showmanship was won by Tanner McCormack of the Whitewood club and he won a prize from VC Hereford Farms of Langenberg. Darby McCormack of the Whitewood Club won top honors in the Junior division. He was presented with the award from the Clements Family of Wawota. In the Intermediate division Sydney Dorrance of Wawota was first, winning a prize from Clark Club Calves at Kipling.

Bailey McCormack of the Whitewood Club won the Senior Division receiving the Borderland Co-op trophy.

The last awards given out for the day were for top record book. The books were judged by Sandra Boutin of Whitewood. Nate Greenbank from the Fairmede club won the Cloverbud division winning a prize from Conexus Credit Union. The junior division was won by Levi Jamieson of Fairmede and he was awarded a plaque from Federated Co-op Feeds in Moosomin. The Intermediate division winner was Alexys Roppel of Kennedy. She went home with the plaque from Andrew Agencies. Cheyenne Jamieson of the Fairmede club took home the award for top Senior winning the prize from the Whitewood Vet Clinic.

This year's sale was very strong again with 35 steers averaging $2.80/lb (up slightly from last year’s average of $2.63lb). The steers were auctioned by Rhett Parks of Whitewood. The high selling steer this year sold for $4.60/lb, and was owned by Brielle Johnson of the Whitewood Club. Brielle has chosen to donate half of the profit’s from her steer to the Stollery Children’s Hospital where she spent a lot of time when she was younger.

Well into summer, Saskatchewan’s drilling rig count is noticeably sluggish Brian Zinchuk Estevan Mercury With oil prices roughly US$10 lower than what they were a year ago, the active drilling rig count across Western Canada is showing a sluggish pace.

Not only are the numbers off compared to the same time last year, when oil was US$70 per barrel, but they’re even lower than 2017, when oil was US$45 a barrel.

Saskatchewan had 40 out of 110 drilling rigs working as of July 15, according to Rig Locator (riglocator. ca), putting our fleet at a utilization rate of 36 per cent. That’s down considerably from 2018, when there were 58 rigs working on July 12, and 2017, when there were 51 rigs working.

Indeed, the rig count is down markedly for the previous three weeks, compared to the last two years. But it’s still considerably better than Alberta, whose 21 per cent utilization rate meant only 80 out of 303 rigs were working. That province’s rig count has almost flatlined, floating roughly 30 rigs above the level it hit during breakup.

British Columbia had 14 of 34 rigs going, making a 29 per cent utilization rate. And in a remarkable turn, its rig count is even lower now that it was during breakup. It’s a little more than

half of the 2017 number of 23, but just below the 2018 number of 16 for the same week.

In Manitoba, three of five rigs were turning to the right, for a 60 per cent utilization rate.

Several companies working in Saskatchewan were on the top 10 active operators list, but truth be told, it was a very low threshold to make it on that list. You only needed three rigs going to be in a threeway tie for eighth place.

The top operator, as usual, was Crescent Point Energy Corp., with 10 rigs. While this was the leading position, it was less than half the number of rigs Crescent Point has usually operated in July in recent years, when at times 26 rigs was a common number. All but one of Crescent Point’s rigs were working in Saskatchewan. That included one at Coyote Lake, one at Griffin, and three at Oungre in southeast Saskatchewan. At Rapdan there was one rig and Clintonville had two rigs in southwest Saskatchewan. The last rig was at Plato in west central Saskatchewan.

Whitecap Resources was next, with seven rigs, with five working in Saskatchewan. One was west of Swift Current at Seward, the second was south of Gull Lake. In west central Saskatchewan they had a rig each at Eagle Lake, Whiteside and Court.

In a three-way tie for third was Baytex Energy Corp., with six rigs, four in west central Saskatchewan. They were at Prairiedale, Coleville, Dodsland and Elsoe.

In a three-way tie for eighth, Teine Energy Ltd. had three rigs, working at Plenty and Plato (two rigs).

Rounding out west central Saskatchewan, Ish Energy Ltd. had one rig at Prairiedale.

In northwest Saskatchewan there were four rigs working north of the North Saskatchewan River, but curiously, none were for Husky Energy. Serafina Energy had one rig at Meota, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. had one rig north of Maidstone at Golden Lake, Rife Resources had one north of Lashburn, and West Lake Energy Corp. was making hole with one rig at Celtic.

Other rigs working in southeast Saskatchewan include three for Vermillion Energy Inc, at Steelman, Cantal and Winmore. NAL Resources Ltd. had one rig at Nottingham. Adonai Resources II Corporation had one rig at Carievale. Ridgeback Resources Inc. was drilling with one rig south of Kisbey.

Highrock Resources had one rig at Benson.

Burgess Creek Exploration Inc. kept punching holes in its core area near Highway 47, near the Lampman turnoff.

Torc Oil & Gas had one

rig northeast of Midale.

Canadian Natural Resources had a rig working at Lost Horse Hill, north of Stoughton.

Outliers included two rigs working in the

Regina area. One was just north of the city, drilling for SaskEnergy.

The next was south of Kronau, for Western Potash Corp. As usual, Mosaic Canada ULC had

one rig reporting at Esterhazy. North American Helium seems to have moved over to the east from its usual stomping grounds, with a rig working at Rapdan.

Rory Allen delights at Moose Mountain Lodge

On Tuesday, July 9 Moose Mountain Lodge was filled with joy, as Rory Allen thrilled residents, staff and guests, as he performed many of the greatest hits of Elvis Presley. If you have never heard Rory Allen sing, you have most definitely missed out.

Allen has performed with the Regina Symphony Orchestra, the 50’s Rock’n’Roll group “Danny and the Juniors”, and with “Elvis Presley’s Imperials Quartet”. Most exciting is the fact that Rory Allen has recorded and performed on several occasions with Elvis Presley’s backup singers, the legendary Jordanaires. While he sings gospel like an angel and dances like a . . . let’s just say, he’s provocative, Rory and his wife, Lorie, were presented with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll’s Diamond Jubilee Medals, in recognition of their numerous charitable and fundraising activities.

The blessing of intervention

By Linda Wegner In our daily phone call, my daughter-inlaw explained why she didn’t answer the phone immediately: “I was just unloading my groceries when I saw a little bird that had fallen from its nest. I managed to pick it up without hurting it and I got it back to the nest. I was afraid that our cat or the ones in the neighbourhood would get it if I hadn’t picked it up immediately” As you can well imagine, we both were relieved that she was there to intervene at just the right moment.

On a personal note, I am most grateful to an-

other walker who happened to be up at the local track at the same early hour as me. She noted that I didn’t seem to be feeling well, came over and inquired and then drove me home where my husband took me to the hospital. It wasn’t anything too serious, but her intervention speeded up my recovery.

Have you ever had the relief that can come from having someone step in to intervene on your behalf? Or, have you had the privilege of being there to help someone else in need?

These examples are simple, but the principle is the same: Whether

they’re huge or simple, we truly need each other!

After my morning Bible reading, I’ve been thinking of the importance, both of being on the giving or the receiving end, of help. Here’s what got me musing on the value of intervention. Psalm 124: 1-5 reads: “If God hadn’t been for us - all together now, Israel, sing out!— If God hadn’t been for us when everyone went against us, we would have been swallowed alive by their violent anger, swept away by the flood of rage, drowned in the torrent; we would have lost our lives in the wild, raging water.”

Arcola-Kisbey 4-H Beef Club season comes to an end Another year of 4H has wrapped up.

We finished the year off with the Achievement day on Saturday June 29th and the Regional show in Weyburn from Monday July 1 to Wednesday July 3.

The achievement day Saturday June 29th was held in Arcola and we had pretty good weather minus a little rain right at the end of the day.

Randy James from Dusty Rose Cattle Co. Was the Judge for the day.

Emma Lees won Grand Champion Steer sponsored by Prime Angus Ranch.

Becca Lees won Reserve Champion steer sponsored by Lyle McLaren Family Kyla Lees won champion Homegrown steer sponsored by David and Rob James Jackson Lees Won Grand champion female sponsored by Weismoore meats.

Christin Dixon Won reserve champion female sponsored by Arcola Agencies Weyburn started off on Monday July 1 with weigh in and then grooming and judging and showman ship.

The steer show was on Tuesday followed by the jackpot steer and Heifer show. Wednesday wrapped up with the heifer show and the steer sale.

Emma Lees won Champion steer and champion angus steer in the regional show and champion steer in the jackpot show. Emma will also be showing her steer at the Calgary stampede.

Ethan Newell won champion Junior Hereford.

Jackson Lees won Reserve Clover bud Heifer.

Tyra Newell wan a communication/sportsmanship award.

Kylee Dixon won the district 7 scholarship.

The club won 1st place in the group of 5 steers.

Report from the Legislature Dan D’Autremont, MLA for Cannington Today there are more people going to work in Saskatchewan than ever before in our province’s history. According to a report released by Statistics Canada, Saskatchewan set an all-time record for employment last month at 592,900 jobs. Employment was up 9,200 jobs in June compared to June 2018, the eleventh consecutive month of year-over-year job increases. Month-to-month, employment was also up, rising by 2,500 jobs between May 2019 and June 2019. Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate in June was the third-lowest in the country at 5.1 per cent. Even though our economy faces significant external headwinds, job creators continue to have confidence in the fundamentals of our diversified economy. With eleven straight months of climbing job numbers, we are seeing very positive trends that supports a growing Saskatchewan economy.

Saskatchewan was proud to host Canada’s Premier’s in Saskatoon for the 2019 Council of the Federation meetings. This collaborative gathering of

leaders from across Canada made great strides on removing barriers to internal trade, advancing access to international markets and labour mobility and immigration.

Through conversation and collaboration, provincial and territorial leaders also worked on shared priorities including strategic infrastructure investments, climate change policy, healthcare sustainability, as well as mental health and addiction services.

We know that a strong economy is essential to the high quality of life that all Canadian citizens expect. Premiers agreed provinces can unilaterally drop exemptions to the Canada Free Trade Agreement. This means less red tape for doing business within Canada, a stronger economy and more jobs for all Canadians.

Victorian Tea at Cannington Manor

The Village of Cannington Manor was established in 1882 as eastern settlers, led by Captain Edward Michel Pierce, tried to recreate the aristocratic English lifestyle. During its heyday the villagers took part in fox hunts, dramatic societies, poetry clubs, tennis, cricket and croquet. After struggling with isolation and low grain prices, the villagers abandoned it a short 18 years later.

Today some of the structures still exist as part of the Cannington Manor Provincial Park.

From May to September, staff, dressed in period

clothing, are available to share information about life in the late 1800’s.

Part of that lifestyle was the Victorian tea, and park visitors on Saturday July 13 were treated to tea and scones, made fresh that morning in the wood cookstove, by park interpreters. Also, a part of the park, All Saints Anglican Church, built in 1884, still continues to be in use, for both regular summer services and weddings.

May and June the park is busy with students who come to learn about the history that permeates the site. From learning how to make ropes at the bachelor’s cabin, to exploring the one room home, to the

blacksmith shop and the churchyard, there is much to be learned about life in Saskatchewan.

The grounds and buildings are well maintained and filled with historical items and much to my joy, the public restrooms feature flush toilets and running hot and cold water.

If you have never been to Cannington Manor Provincial park, you are invited to take part in the Sunday Fair, August 4 where you will find a live band, games, teats, ice cream making, and crafts at this hidden gem, right in your own back yard.

Ronald McDonald House #keepingfamiliesclose

By Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon is vital to families with children age 18 years or younger who are hospitalised in Saskatoon. With the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital slated to open later this year, it’s importance will only increase. With a suggested payment of $10 per night and meals provided for families, it can alleviate a huge stress on families with a sick child.

Friday, July 26, there will be a fundraising BBQ held on Main Street Carlyle, with all proceeds to benefit the House. The funds received that day will be used to feed the families staying at RMH Saskatoon on July 31, 2019. Any extras will be used to provide thermals to families to carry food or breastmilk to the hospital.

The average number of people staying in Saskatoon this past week was 101, and families appreciate being able to return to the house for a hot, nutritious, home cooked meal each evening.

Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital are both recipients of donations from ThirtyOne Gives (the philanthropic arm of ThirtyOne Gifts), and as part of their National Serve Day, consultants across the US and Canada will be preparing, funding and serving a meal to the guests of Ronald McDonald House, with help from their individual communities and consultants themselves, through fundraising initiatives.

If you find yourself on Main Street that day please enjoy a burger or hotdog and a drink and make a donation.

Southeastern Saskatchewan crop report for period July 2 to July 8 Crops are advancing in the region and have remained in generally poor to good condition, but behind to normal in development. Sixty per cent of the fall cereals and 40 per cent of the spring cereals are in the heading stage, while 37 per cent of the canola and mustard and 48 per cent of the pulse crops are now flowering.

Livestock producers currently have four per cent of the hay crop cut and one per cent baled or put into silage. Hay quality is rated as 52 per cent good, 33 per cent fair and 15 per cent poor.

Producers are reporting hay yields are significantly reduced as a result of a lack of moisture in the spring. Pastures have improved, but will have a reduced carrying capacity. Pasture conditions are rated as 49 per cent good, 38 per cent fair, 10 per cent poor and three per cent very poor. Livestock producers also have livestock water quality concerns.

Spotty thunderstorms brought moisture and some hail to the parts of the region. Rain will be needed in the coming weeks in order to fill heads and pods.

Rainfall ranged from trace amounts to 90 mm in the Ceylon area.

The Redvers and Moosomin areas reported 15 mm, the Lampman and Broadview areas 70 mm and the Wilcox area 13 mm. The Ceylon area has received the most precipitation since April 1 (278 mm). Regionally, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as four per cent surplus, 84 per cent adequate, 11 per cent short and one per cent very short.

is rated as 73 per cent adequate, 25 per cent short and two per cent very short.

Producers have been applying fungicides where necessary.

Crop damage this week

was from localized flooding, strong winds and hail. Root rot has also caused some damage in pulse crops.

Producers are busy scouting fields, spraying fungicides and haying.

Jake Purves has welcomed his newest baby granddaughter, Charlotte Ann who arrived safely on June 23.

Her parents are Jason and Lindsay Purves of Regina. Congratulations everyone.

Holly Anthony spent the weekend (July 6) in Bienfait where she visited her sister and met up with her niece and boyfriend from Hamilton, ON as they were also visiting for a week in Bienfait. She also helped celebrate her niece’s birthday before returning home on July 8.

Gary and Brenda Junk spent from July 4 to 9 at Sylvan Lake, AB visiting their family – son, Jody, Jill and boys Jaxon and Jace; daughter, Kara Junk and her daughter Morgan.

Granddaughter Morgan returned to Alida to spend a week of holidays with Grandma and Grandpa and getting reacquainted with other members of the family.

Murray Cowan spent some time on July 11 visiting his parents Gray and Edel Cowan and enjoyed going quading around the area. He returned to Estevan July 12.

Betty-Jo DeJong (Lashburn, SK) arrived on July 12 to visit her parents Bob and Cecille Harrison for a week’s holiday. She also met up with her sister BobbiJo and children (Sylvan Lake) as well as her cousin Terry Cranch (Codette) who were all visiting Bob and Cecille.

The hub of activity in Alida is centred at the Alida Pool. On these hot days of summer there are many making use to the pool. Swimming lessons were full last week and students benefitted

Everyone seems to be enjoying the use of the pool, great for cooling off, sun tanning, learning new swimming skills and just plain having fun as well as visiting among old and new friends. Enjoy your Days of Summer while you can.

The weatherman continues to surprise us with unsettled weather with more showers, wind and lastly even including some hail in areas. We received another half inch of moisture with a trace of hail – not enough to cause damage that I’m aware of as yet.

Can you believe this – we are already half way through July – man but does the days and time ever fly by when one is having fun and keeping

busy (at least that’s what is said, I believe). I can’t seem to be able to get back out in the garden to do finish up with the weeding – always just enough moisture to stay damp in the mornings and too hot in the afternoon – at least that is my excuses and I’m sticking by them. The plants and growing and hopefully will soon be producing so one can enjoy fresh vegetables. There always seems to be lots of good and delicious food to add to the table at meal time.

Flowers are also making the use of this fine warm weather mixed with showers, are showing off their beautiful colors and blooms. Speaking of showing off blooms of color – one must mention the Flower pots on Centre Street. They are just beautiful and gor-

geous – adding to the décor of the town – appreciation to those who make the obligation to sponsor a pot – your efforts don’t go unnoticed.

For the second year, Ted Stremel gathered his friends from his Elkhorn Music Days for a Music Jam under the Villa trees. Milton and Elsie Henry from McCauley, MB were the only ones signing the indoor guest book. Others were from B.C.; Virden, Ebor, Spy Hill, about 15 musicians in all. The star was Ted himself, on violin. The Villa Guild served lunch to over 50 people, and the Saskatchewan sky cooperated with us. Thank you Ted for your Outdoor Party.

Fiddling is alive and well on the Prairies Submitted The music may be called “Old Time,” but fiddling is alive and well on the Prairies.

Over the past month, summer students from the Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party (KLKP) music camp have travelled across Saskatchewan and Manitoba, playing and teaching fiddle at schools, senior living homes, and dances.

KLKP is a music camp for all ages and abilities focusing on traditional Canadian music genres.

With its focus on nurturing communities through music, outreach was a no-brainer for the camp: “Our goal throughout the tour was to bring music to under-served groups, like children and the elderly,” said Kitchen Party founder Michele Amy, “by playing at schools and dances, we are not only improving musical programming in communities now, but we are inspiring the next generation to take up music.”

The camp employs an outreach team of summer students through the Canada Summer Job Program who are all adept traditional musicians, including Micah Walbaum, a student from Forget who recently made her debut at Country Thunder; Tristen Durocher, an in-demand musician from Northern Saskatchewan; Marcel Hapel, a Kitchen Party Instructor and current music education student at Brandon University; and Mitchell Dureault, an energetic fiddler from Regina. Durocher and Hapel will also be competing at the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Competition this

August.

One of the most important aspects of the camp’s outreach was its work at elementary schools in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, where they introduced children to Old Time music and its history. Summer student Tristen Durocher particularly enjoyed his time at Arcola Elementary School: “I spent the day playing for each class, and at the end of each session I would give them the chance to try my fiddle. All the kids’ hands shot up!” said Durocher, “I think it’s so important to bring this kind of event into schools, because for many of the kids this was their first time hearing a fiddle in person.”

Durocher and fellow KLKP summer student Micah Walbaum also spent the past week touring the Southeast from Whitewood to Estevan and enjoyed stopping at senior residences to play familiar tunes from times past. One of their stops was at the Bow Valley Villa in Oxbow, where they added another player to their team:

“One lady in our audience was 98 years old, and was a pianist who used to play for Old Time dances,” remembered Durocher, “After listening to a few of our tunes, some of her friends said “go up and play a few songs with them.” She made her way to the piano bench with her walker, sat down, and started playing Westphalia Waltz, one of my earliest favourites.

Micah and I played our fiddles with her music and everybody tapped along and swayed side to side in their seats as though they were all dancing to the waltz.

There were many smiles and many closed eyes, faces lost in expressions of remembering.”

Whether it is bringing back the memories of older generations, or giving kids a chance to try something new, fiddle music has something for everyone.

Business proud to be in Carlyle Estevan Mercury Carlyle has given its residents lots of reasons to be proud of where they live, and the town’s business community is one source of pride.

One of the long-standing businesses is King’s Department Store, located on Main Street. It’s a business that has plenty to offer its customers, with its fashion, footwear and accessories for adults and youths.

Owner Ken King said Carlyle is fortunate to have all that it has right now.

“We had what I would call some definite boom years, and things have tailed off since then, but they’re still very good,” said King.

“We’re very fortunate to have what we have with the diverse economy.

The tourism business is strong. The ag. business is strong.”

The people in the oil industry have been through tough times, but King hopes the prosperous times in the industry will come back.

Main Street in Carlyle attracts a lot of people. It’s just off of the junction of Highways 13 and 9. People

are passing through on their way to the tourist destinations to the north of the town, or to other destinations in different directions.

The town also has lot of good business people.

“I have seen a lot of changes,” said King. “I’d like to say it’s all positive, and for the most part it has been. We’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by other great business people, who we’re able to piggyback off of their success, and the momentum that they have and the draw that they have.”

Main Street in many Saskatchewan communities has gone through tough times, but Carlyle is one that King believes has been able to sustain a great deal of strength.

King’s has gone through a lot of changes, too. It arrived in Carlyle in 1985, and since that time, it expanded. A few years ago, King purchased the neighbouring 122 Main The Ladies’ Boutique Store, after the previous owner, Judy Feduk, decided to retire.

A link between to two stores was established, and that expanded retail and office space has allowed them to grow.

“We’re very fortunate to be situated next door to a ladies’ wear store that has been there since 1963,” he said.

Thirteen full-time and part-time employees work in the Carlyle store.

King’s parents opened the original store in Wawota in 1976. The Wawota store is still open six days a week. They eventually expanded operations to Redvers in 1978 and Carlyle in 1985.

“We’re blessed to have people who appreciate what we do, and support us whole-heartedly, plus we have neighbouring communities who do exactly the same thing,” said King.

Tourism also provides a big draw for the community, with customers who are visiting White Bear First Nation, Kenosee Lake and Moose Mountain Provincial Park.

“That’s certainly always enjoyable. We love the tourism business just as much as we love the everyday business.

So you get two great opportunities right here in one Main Street.”
