Slip through the summer at Kenosee Superslides

By Chris L. Istace For more than three decades, the Kenosee Superslides have been the Moose Mountain area’s nerve center for summer fun.

The facility was opened in 1986 and has, for the past 32 years, hosted thousands of water activity enthusiasts from Saskatchewan, Canada and around the world.

Located about 24 kilometers north of Carlyle, Sask. along Highway 9 just east of Kenosee Lake, the Kenosee Superslides host a plethora of opportunities for sliders of all ages. Children, less-experienced and intermediate sliders can safely meander through the park’s Twister Slides, which includes the Exotic Yacht Club Ride. This feature allows participants to take in�latable tubes down the eastern-most slide.

The Tube Slides, themselves, are another feature for those who wish to ride down within the con�ines of an in�latable craft. Sliders jump on a tube – which are available for daily rental to be used on the slides and in the park’s Lazy Canal River Ride – and slip down from splash pool to splash pool on two slides winding their way down the hill.

One of the tube structures includes a six-foot drop and whitewater rafting is open on the western tube slide. This feature doubles the amount of water running through the system, doubling the amount of fun to be had.

Veteran sliders or older patrons who wish to test their mettle can try the Double Bonzai Slides or the park’s feature attraction; the eight-storey tall Free Fall Slide. The latter offers a spectacular view of Kenosee Lake before sliders blast down to the bottom of the hill in less than three seconds.

Meanwhile, the youngest sliders can either take in the Kiddie Slides or meander through the facility’s play area, which includes a jungle gym, dry slides, swings, a sandbox and a treehouse.

A beach volleyball court, which has hosted weekend tournaments in the past, is also on site.

For patrons seeking a more relaxing summer outing, Kenosee Superslides has a 150-person hot tub and an 800-foot canal with a tranquilizing current that moves you along the manmade river as you �loat on a tube or other �lotation device.

The facility also offers a summertime menu of hamburgers, hotdogs, ice cream cones, sundaes and more in the Cruisers Family Diner. And shoppers can grab a souvenir at the Re�lections Clothing Store, which features everything from keepsakes to apparel.

The Kenosee Superslides are open from mid-June through to the beginning of September, operating from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Children under three are admitted for free, while aged admission categories range in price from $15 to $30 for the day.

Family packages, weekend passes, weekly passes and seasonal passes are also available.

Saskota Baseball regular season winds down

By Chris L. Istace Despite battling to a tie and a loss in recent play, the Estevan Tower Wolves continued to hold a thin lead in the Saskota Baseball League standings.

After defeating the visiting Carnduff Astros 6-2 on July 5, the Wolves tied the Redvers A’s 6-6 the next evening, then dropped a 2-0 decision to the thirdseeded Carlyle Cardinals on July 10. The results gave them 14 wins, two losses and a tie on the season and a one win advantage over the Oxbow Chiefs as of last week.

The Chiefs, however, have three games in hand.

Oxbow has 13 wins and one loss after knocking over the Arcola Threshers 8-6 on July 10. They played the Cardinals in Carlyle on July 12 and the Kipling Royals on Tuesday, but results for these games were not available at deadline.

For their part, the third-place Cardinals sat with

11 wins, two losses and a tie for an .821 win percentage. They also had three games in hand over Estevan, putting them one and a half games back of the league leaders.

Other recent results included Redvers over Arcola 8-7 on July 5 followed on July 10 by a 9-9 tie between Redvers and the Kenosee Cubs, and a 4-0 victory for the Windthorst Pirates over the Carnduff Astros. The next evening, Arcola defeated Kipling 6-4.

The results of four games on July 12, �ive games on Sunday and two games on Tuesday were not available before deadline.

This week will host the �inal three, regularly scheduled league games before the teams break up into the playoff draws. On Thursday, the Kenosee Cubs host the Arcola Threshers and the Carlyle Cardinals are in Estevan to meet the Tower Wolves.

son on Friday with a match in Kipling. All games begin at 6:30 p.m. except the match in Estevan, where the �irst pitch occurs at 7 p.m.

The rest of the Saskota Baseball League standings has the 9-6-1 Threshers in fourth; Redvers in �ifth at 7-7-2; Carnduff in sixth with four wins, six losses and two ties; the 3-12-0 Southeast Fireballs and the 3-130 Windthorst Pirates in seventh; and Kenosee and the Kipling Royals tied for eighth at (2-8-1 and 2-11-0 respectively).

The teams will meet at Kenosee Lake on July 28 and 29 for the Jack Harbourne Memorial Tournament, while Baseball Sask. hosts its provincial Senior AA men’s championships for Tier 1 teams Aug. 3 to 5 in Regina, and Tier 2 to 5 teams Aug. 10 to 12. The latter tournaments are scheduled to take place in Estevan and Carnduff (Tiers 2 and 3), while Tiers 4 and 5 meet in Windthorst and North Battleford.

Six tips to keep pets safe during storm season

While no one is immune from the devastation of a natural disaster, preparing before a storm hits is key to keeping everyone in your family—including your pets—safe.

Here are six ideas to keep in mind for your pet as you map out your disaster preparedness plan.

• Have your pet microchipped. In the event of an emergency—natural or otherwise—you want to ensure your pet can get back to you if you’re separated. Collars and ID tags, though important, can break or detach. Microchips—computerized and scannable implants about the size of a grain of rice—are more fool-proof since they’re inserted under your pet’s skin.

• Bring your pets inside at the �irst sign of danger.

Disasters can be disorienting for pets, and they could run away or hurt themselves reacting to loud noises and strange changes to their landscape. Also, rain, �lying debris and high winds pose a danger.

• If you have to leave, keep your pet with you. Leaving your pets behind during a natural disaster is never a good idea because they could escape or become exposed to a number of life-threatening hazards. Keep them on a leash or in a pet carrier so they don’t escape even in a “familiar” neighborhood.

• Determine where you’ll go. Coordinate, in advance, to stay with friends or family members, or �ind a petfriendly hotel outside the disaster area. Have those conversations and do your research well ahead of time so you have a plan in place when needed.

• Create a pet-friendly resource list. Not all emergency shelters will accept pets, so you need a Plan B. Develop a list of the pet-friendly hotels outside your immediate area. Research a list of veterinarians in the area should your pet need medical care (your regular vet may have some recommendations). Also, �igure out which boarding facilities are nearby in case you need to separate from your pet for a time.

• Pack an emergency bag. You’ll want emergency provisions packed for your pet well in advance of a catastrophe so you can evacuate your home quickly if needed. Choose an easy-to-carry bag, label it and keep it where everyone in the family can �ind it quickly.

The bag should include a pet �irst aid kit; enough food and bottled water for a week (rotate this every couple of months to keep it from going bad); medications (check periodically to ensure medicines in your emergency bag don’t expire); cleanup supplies; food

Lucky the TurfMutt. and water dishes; bags (or litter for cats) for collecting waste; an extra collar and leash; photocopies of medical records; towels; recent photos of your pets; and a favorite toy or chewy for comfort. It’s also a good idea to have a sturdy carrier or crate for each pet.

By having all this in place, you can immediately put your pet preparedness plan into action when you know a storm is coming instead of spending valuable time trying to determine what needs to be done to best protect your pet.

A sport that requires concentration “I played too fast.”

“My shoulders weren’t in the right position.” “My feet were too close to the ball.” “I wasn’t standing properly, but I hit the ball anyway.” These types of comments are often heard on golf courses. Missing a shot only takes a moment of distraction or not being in just the right position. Technique plays an important role, of course, but golf also involves concentration and strength of mind.

The proof ? It’s estimated that golfers spend, on average, 90 per cent of their time on the golf course thinking and 10

per cent swinging and hitting the ball. It’s a good illustration of the importance of making the right decisions. In other words, the right balance between discipline, movement control and psychology will help you enjoy the game more and improve your score.

You also have to learn to control your emotions.

It’s often said that a golfer’s behaviour is a re�lection of his or her personality. Your main aim should be to play for yourself, to give yourself a challenge.

So much the better if you achieve your other goals as well.

You missed your shot because you looked up or because your swing was too short? Just forget about it; move on and concentrate on your next shot.

Frantically searching for the reasons behind a bad shot may haunt you for the rest of the game, which will only make things worse.

Re member that you can compensate for an error with a perfect putt on the green.

Golf can be a frustrating sport if you take it too seriously. Enjoy your successes and learn to accept your poorer performances.

After all, this is a game, and the goal is to have fun.

Technique is important, but golf also requires strength of mind.

What should you eat when camping?

There are so many choices for breakfast: oatmeal, cereal, croissants, toast made over the �ire, fresh fruit, bacon

and eggs, or crepes (you can make the dry mixture at home). There are also lots of meals you can start preparing well in advance. Marinated meat, frozen stews, pasta salads, bean salads and spice mixes can all be brought from home.

Medication and injury risk: what you should know

Generally, the need for medication increases with age, as health problems become more likely to occur as we grow older. However, certain types of medication have side effects, many of which increase the risk of accidents such as slips and falls.

Common culprits Several drugs are known to increase the risk of slips and falls for a number of reasons: they reduce alertness, interfere with balance or cause a drop in blood pressure when getting up from a seated or lying down position. Common culprits include: • Psychotropic drugs (e.g. sleeping pills, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, opioid analgesics, antidepressants) • Heart medication • Anticonvulsants • Anti-diabetic medication • Non-steroidal anti-in�lammatories (e.g. ibuprofen, naproxen) Additionally, the more medication you take, the greater the risk of slips and falls, as drug interactions increase the potential for side effects.

How to prevent accidents To prevent slips and falls caused by medication side effects, it’s important to periodically go over the list of drugs you take (prescribed or otherwise) with your doctor. It’s often possible to either progressively reduce your intake of certain medications, opt for varieties with fewer side effects, or adopt alternative solutions, such as reducing your dosage of anxiety medication in favour of relaxation exercises.

Never stop taking your medication because you’re scared of falling. On the contrary, it’s essential that you follow the dosage assigned to you by your doctor. Abruptly ending or altering your medication intake can actually increase the risk of accidents such as slips and falls. Always consult your doctor.

Walleye fishing Walleye is by far Saskatchewan’s most popular sport �ish. People come from all over North America to catch walleye in our province’s clean cool waters. Some of the best walleye �ishing can be found in our northern lakes, but our southern lakes such as Rafferty Reservoir, Last Mountain Lake, Diefenbaker Lake and of course the extremely popular Tobin Lake are world class too.

I know for my family, my kids love nothing more than to go out and catch walleye off the shore at one of the many �ishing holes that I have discovered during my time as an of�icer. We don’t even keep any of the �ish as they just like to catch them. As a dad, there is no better quality time with my kids than �ishing.

For me, this started at an early age when my family went to Jan Lake in early July. We used to catch walleye with a new jig called a Mr. Twister.

Back then, the limits were quite liberal with the daily limit for walleye being eight and the possession limit being twice the daily limit.

Today, the limit of walleye is four, unless otherwise listed with your daily limit as a possession limit.

Back then, my dad used to call walleye a pickerel. Well monkey see, monkey do. And I called them the same until I went to school to be a conservation of�icer and learned that we do not have pickerel in Saskatchewan.

True pickerel are found in southeast Manitoba and Ontario, and look like a small northern pike.

Pickerel is just a slang name for our popular walleye. The walleye is probably the most popular of edible �ish in Saskatchewan, although the burbot, if you have not tried it, is a very close second in taste.

The walleye is named for its pearlescent coloured eyes, which is caused by a re�lective layer of pigment in the eye that helps them see and feed at night and in murky waters. They are not fans of the light and often go to deeper waters during the light of the day and then come closer to shore to feed during the night. Walleye are predators and will eat a variety of food including insect larvae, cray�ish, frogs, minnows and forage �ish.

I did not know this until I referred to one of my old textbooks, but it is believed that walleye only see in green and red due to lack of blue and

yellow pigments in the eyes. This may be something that you consider when picking a lure this summer.

There is another �ish that looks similar to the walleye and that is the sauger. The one difference between the sauger and the walleye is the fact that the walleye’s caudal �in (tail �in) has a white spot on the bottom part of the �in. Sauger do not have this white patch.

Sauger are most commonly only found in more northern waters.

Walleye are covered with unique rough feeling scales called ctenoid scales. One end of the scale has sharp teeth on it like a comb, while the other end is rounded and overlaps to make the �ish �lexible in water. This is why the scales of the walleye feel rough compared to northern pike scales.

Anyone who has caught a walleye knows to be wary of the mouth, dorsal �in and the gill plate. The mouth is full of sharp teeth and the gill plate, which covers the gills, has a sharp edge to it.

Lastly, we all have discovered the end result of improperly picking up a walleye with our bare hands. Doing this incorrectly will result in you

leaking precious blood from one, or more punctures generated by stiff and sharp spines on the walleye dorsal �in.

To properly hold a walleye for that great photo it is best to use two hands – one to support the tail and the other under the belly of the �ish. Catching a walleye can be tougher than woodpecker lips. Those who think that you can just go out and get your limit are sadly mistaken, or have a favourite hole that they should tell no one about. I know �ishermen who say goodbye to their signi�icant others early Saturday morning and are not seen until Sunday night. They can stymie the most proli�ic angler with its moody feeding tendencies and placement in unpredict-

Walleye are natural spawners. In many lakes, females are capable of laying up to several hundred thousand eggs per year. This is why it is important to protect these large spawning females in April and early May. Southern lakes are very productive with lots of feed for the hungry walleye. However, many of these lakes do not have the habitat to support natural reproduction. Because of this, the province has a hatchery program that stocks walleye fry into a number of these lakes where walleye cannot reproduce, and greatly increase the number of lakes we can catch these �ish in.
