White Bear Pow Wow wows spectators

By Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net On July 5, 6, and 7 the White Bear First Nations welcomed dancers from all over Canada and the US. Pow wows are celebrations that showcase the peoples’ music, dances, regalia, food and crafts.

Changes to the Indian Act in the early part of the 20th century outlawed cultural traditions and ceremonies including the potlatch of the West Coast First Nations and the Sun Dance of the Plains.

From Front page - White Bear Pow Wow Since the 1930’s, long before ceremonies and cultural traditions were legal again, White Bear was one of the last remaining communities to host pow wows and ceremonies. Once the laws were changed to allow the practice of their cultures without legal issues, White Bear Band lead the cultural resurgence and positioned itself as a leader within

the newly emerging “pow wow circuit”.

The 1990’s saw a cultural resurgence that has increased the visibility and prominence of pow wow dancing and singing to an elite competitive cultural event.

The Bear Claw Casino has hosted the annual summer celebration on behalf of White Bear for a decade, reducing the cost to the Band while ensur-

ing the continuity of this important event. White Bear resumed the co-ordination of the event last year, as members young and old, both rural and urban directed them to situate the Nation once again as a leader with premier pow wow and summer celebrations for the community. Visitors gathered once again from all over Canada and the United States.

Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons I am on some well earned vacation. I can advise that during my time away tickets were issued, warnings were provided and individuals were arrested.

• We often pull over individuals that are obviously not wearing their seatbelts. Often these individuals ask for, or demand a warning. At this point we might give the following warning. “If you get caught again you will get another ticket” There’s your warning.

• The violators often give an excuse for not wearing their seatbelt such as. “I am in and out of my vehicle a lot making deliveries” “I have a important meeting and I don’t want to crease my clothing” “I normally don’t put it on until I am out of my driveway and forgot”. As for our defence against these excuses we also find we are in and out of our vehi-

cles a lot being we have to give out tickets to people who refuse to comply with the law. As for the backing out of the driveway. If you are on the road it is too late since you need to have your seatbelt on before you enter any roadway. As for getting your clothing wrinkled, like really??

• Then individuals often say they are going to lose their job because of the ticket and the actions of the Police Officer. Apparently, some companies are pretty strict about seatbelt use.

More strict than we are.

• We often get asked why we are wasting our time giving out seatbelt tickets. Well, we are apparently always wasting our time giving out tickets when we could be arresting real criminals.

That said, we would rather not give out tickets, but it is our duty to make the community safer and seatbelt use makes everyone safer.

• We then get asked what can happen at slow speeds or on main street? Our answer is “a lot”. We have seen rollover collisions at slow speed, injury collisions

at slow speed and well, if the seatbelt is being used it decreases or eliminates the injury.

• Now if you don’t wear your seatbelt it is not your choice. Tax payers have to pay for your medical care because you chose not to wear the seatbelt. In addition, why should first responders have to pick up the pieces, and I mean literally pieces if you choose not to wear the seat belt?

• We often deal with individuals with Mental Health Issues. An example of a recent incident is as follows: • A complainant called being they are concerned about the trains choo’in, planes swoo’in, and they also have concerns about the ATV’s moooooov’in on their property. We have been dealing with this individual and several others for quite some time and we truly feel for them. Unfortunately what is not a Policing issue continues to be a policing issue being if nobody else will do anything we are expected to do something.

Pop. growth great for Sask; less so for rurals

By Murray Mandryk That Saskatchewan continues to grow is great news, but the province’s growth hasn’t exactly been even.

This has make things particularly difficult for rural Saskatchewan that has endured stagnation or population by continuing to lose people that are moving out of province and moving to Saskatchewan’s cities.

According to the April 1 quarterly population numbers, there are now 1,169,131 people living in Saskatchewan, an increase of 10,295 people in the past year and 708 people in the first quarter of 2019.

Over all, this is tremendous news, even if it signifies a slowdown in growth to rate of less than one quarter of one per cent of growth this year if this trend continues.

While more Saskatchewan people are now moving to Alberta and other provinces than are moving here from elsewhere in Canada, we continue to grow because we have so many new Canadians moving here.)

Most of you will recall that the Saskatchewan Party promised back in 2007 when the province had crossed the million people barrier vowed to grow the province by one per cent a year or 100,000 in its first decade in power. They met that goal within five years.

The April numbers mark 52 consecutive quarters — 13 consecutive years _ of population growth in Saskatchewan that has have added 176,894 people to this province’s population since things started to turnaround in 2006.

To be clear, this growth actually started 13 years ago under the former NDP administration of Lorne Calvert an may be do to early investments in immigrant sponsorship programs.

Contrary to those who believe population growth in in Saskatchewan has only come after CCF/NDP governments have been booted for office, it’s never been that cut and dried.

For example, when this province hit a peak of 931,557 people in1936, it then declined for 15 years _ eight under the old Liberal government and seven under the new CCF Tommy Douglas government until it reached at low ebb of 831,728 in 1951.

Then it was 35 years of stagnation or slow growth under the CCF (13 years), Liberals, (seven years), NDP, (11 years) and Grant Devine Progressive Conservatives (four years) until we peaked at 1,009,610 people in 1986.

For the last year years of the PCs and15 years of the Roy Romanow/Calvert NDP, it was either decline or stagnation until the turnaround 13 years ago.

What all this means is that the Sask. Party is the only governing party in this province to have experienced nothing but continuous growth. However, there is a big accompanying irony: It is in cities where the Sask. Party is less strong where virtually all the growth has occurred. In the rural areas, where the Sask. Party is as solid as any party can be, it’s actually losing people.

And there may be some political implications to all this.

The cities that are traditionally less friendly to conservative parties anyway may be seeing those feelings enhanced by the problems that growth now brings: crowded schools, longer hospital wait times, more expensive housing costs and higher municipal taxes to pay for the infrastructure costs.

And rural Saskatchewan might have more reason to be anger because of lack growth, but it may be that this reality has solidified Sask. Party rural support.

There’s little doubt that rural Saskatchewan acknowledges the Sask. Party government’s efforts to not only grow the province, but to to avoid service reduction in places where it’s not growing. Rural folk fear not fairing as well under another government. They have long memories and likely recall that 52 of their hospitals closed under the NDP in 1993.

That said, it’s ironic that what’s been good for the province has a while hasn’t been great where the Sask. Party is strongest.

The faces behind the figures Want to witness a group of adults polarize faster than a world class athlete runs the 100m? Get them talking; not about Trump or Trudeau, or even climate change or carbon tax. Get them talking about whether or not children should receive an allowance. I’m not kidding. I watched a discussion of financial planners, child Shelley Luedtke psychologists and parents talk about the pros and cons and couldn’t believe how intensely they argued their position. There were no fence sitters.

An allowance teaches responsibility.

An allowance is paying children to do things they should be doing anyway.

An allowance gives kids the message they will always be given free money.

An allowance helps children understand the value of a dollar.

And so the teeter-totter continues; back and forth as adults determine what is best in teaching children how to handle money. Of course those lessons can be taught with or without an allowance, but therein lies the key. Lessons about money must be taught. Or at least there needs to be conversation.

Money problems are often cited as a reason for relationship breakdowns, but it is likely more accurate to say that lack of conversation about money is the truer reason. Nearly 60% of couples walking down the aisle have not disclosed their salaries to each other, and even after getting married 30% did not know what their spouse made. Less than 36% were honest about how much debt they were bringing into the relationship.

Why aren’t we more open about money? Or, why aren’t we having the kinds of conversations we should be having? We need to demystify it and uncloak what money is…and what it is not.

times wished I lived close to the cities where my favorite teams play. But as much as I recognize the economic spin-off a franchise can have on a city, I have had so many moments lately when my eyes rolled in disbelief at the contracts being offered to athletes. How did we get here? How did we get to a place that allows a person with an ability to skate or run or dunk a ball to collect signing bonuses and salaries that are larger than some nation’s GDP? Then again, many athletes and others in the economic stratosphere have to confront the pitfalls that come with all that money. I know, I know, some might say, “Give me that kind of money and I’ll happily deal with all the problems!” Well, I think it all depends on who you have around you, sharing in the affluence.

Last summer my husband and I took our young adult daughters on a vacation, since it had been a few years since the four of us had been able to get away at the same time. As we were sitting at a restaurant we loved, right next to an attraction we thoroughly enjoyed, we got talking about how amazing it would be if we could afford this vacation spot every year. Our oldest daughter thought about that and remarked that all the money in the world wouldn’t make it a great vacation if you weren’t with people you loved. “We’re having such a good time because we like being together,” she said. “Even the happiest place on earth wouldn’t be very happy if you don’t have people you want to share it with.”

When I was in elementary school I got an allowance from my parents. I believe it helped develop an understanding of what I placed value on and what I was willing to save up for. For that, and so many other financial lessons, I am grateful. Most of all I learned that the digits, no matter how many there might be, are not what makes anyone rich. Whether it’s an allowance, a salary, a bonus, or any other remuneration, when it comes down to the treasury that matters, it’s the people…not the pay. That’s my outlook.

Moms on a Community Mission dish out some cash

Tuesday June 25 the Moms on a Community Mission dished out the winnings from their Chase the Ace Fundraiser.

Minor Hockey and Kid Sport received $6280.90 and the Carlyle Sports Arena Kitch-

en received $750. The elementary playground fundraising received $12,000 from Chase the Ace and the Community Christmas Supper event.

Members of the Moms on a Community Mission would like to thank everyone who came out and supported their events and helped make them a success.

While the group has dispersed the funds raised, they are not done with their mission. The Moms are on the hunt for other boards in need of fundraising money to join them in planning an event for the fall, and look forward to planning and executing more events to help the community fund their goals.

Saskatchewan summer fairs

By Calvin Daniels This is not the first time I have written about how nostalgic I can become while attending the Yorkton Exhibition.

The summer fairs; Saskatoon, Yorkton, Melfort, Golburn, Invermay, Shand and others were essentially my combination summer camps and family holidays, from the time I was five until I was past my teens.

That was starting in 1965, and continuing to the mid-1980s, which was a decidedly different time when looking at what summer fairs across the Canadian Prairies was all about.

In those long ago years summer fairs were largely agriculture events, first and foremost, with producers bringing out their best stock to be judged against the best of neighbours and friends. With the competition of the show ring came equal amounts of camaraderie in the barns before and after the judge rendered their verdict on who would take home the red ribbons.

In those days there were red ribbons for just

about everything farmers raised on what were largely mixed farm operations. As a result, while predominantly showing pigs, over the years I won ribbons showing a friend’s calves in junior beef classes, took mom’s chickens to Shand Fair, showed dairy goats, sheep, grain sheaves, and even held the halter on an occasional draft horse in group classes to help out.

But as I sat in the grandstand last week watching the rodeo, the barns I once ferreted around as a youth in the distance, there was a sense of loss at the fair.

While a vibrant Regional 4-H Beef Show remains part of the Yorkton fair, and light horses have returned after a time when they too had disappeared from the fair agenda, agriculture maintains barely a toehold at the fair.

It is of course a change that has corresponded to farms continuing to grow larger,

and in that process more specialized. With that comes less time to take stock to fairs, and in some cases, pigs among them, growing concern over the potential of disease spreading at such events.

While the reasons are reasonable, I still miss agriculture at summer fairs.

There is an element of my youth missing when there are Hereford cattle in the summer show rings, and Clydesdales, and pigs and sheep, that has me wishing a little for a return to the days of my youth.

I also suspect while the farm sector recognizes urban residents are increasingly isolated from farms, the chance to see livestock up close at summer fairs, to talk to producers, to connect in even that limited way, would help bridge the gap. But alas that bridge is long lost.

And, that is just the change that ultimately comes with time.

Redvers Knights of Columbus Council celebrates 60 years Submitted It was a rather momentous event for “Msgr Gaire Council #4850” - Redvers Knights of Columbus last Saturday, June 22, 2019 as the council celebrated it 60th Year since it was founded.

The celebration commenced with Mass at 5:00 p.m., celebrated

by Fr. Wilfred Calinawan and then followed by a banquet in the hall of Our Lady Fatima Parish. The event was attended by numerous honoured guests from Sask. Knights of Columbus State Council who travelled from near and far to commemorate the occasion and bring special messages of congratulations and awards of recognition.

Lady of Fatima Parish - Redvers. There were 50 Charter Members on the Charter in 1959. Sir Alphone Aimé was the first Grande Knight and there have been 26 Past Grande Knights since then, many of whom were in attendance for this banquet.

Trail Ride supports Saskairie

Forty-seven years have passed since the Prairie Lore and Living Society’s dream came to fruition in the form of Saskairie. They wanted to provide a place where both city and country kids could come and experience nature at its best.

Located on three quarters of land just west of Carlyle, in the foothills of the Moose Mountains, the site boasts a cabin capable of housing 28 people in what can only be described as rustic.

The accommodations provide 2 communal rooms featuring wooden bunks with diamond willow supports, rubber covered mattresses, and a large kitchen with several wood burning stoves, fridges and tables, all inside a log cabin built in the middle of winter

by Tom Scarrow, with help from the White Bear First Nations.

Later a little house was added featuring a bathroom with running water, one double

bed and four bunks.

The group also added a cook shack with a woodstove and power for the fridges used to house the food for all the trail riders. This year the group added a large pavilion to provide shelter to those groups that may be interested in holding family reunions, weddings or group camping. The Jack MacKenzie Memorial Pavilion was completed just in time for this year’s trail ride and eight permanent picnic tables will be arriving shortly, all paid for from the funds raised at last years trail ride.

The board, headed by President Deb Morrow, works hard to maintain the property, keeping the grass cut, the buildings maintained and the power bills paid, but they have dreamed of renovating the bathroom and putting new flooring in the little house.

While there is water available at the property, it is not safe for drinking, but if you are looking for somewhere to have a family

reunion, this might well be it! Of course, you will need generators for electricity, unless you really want to rough it, but the birds and wildlife won’t complain if your music is a little loud, or you get a little rowdy around the campfire. With trails, for hiking or quads, that lead right into the Moose Mountain Provincial Park you will have no shortage of nature to explore. There is a donation box located on the old cook shack and prices are posted for ease of information.

Saskairie is a yearround facility so snowmobilers are welcome to enjoy themselves there as well.

The 5th Annual Trail Ride took place July 5 and 6, with approximately 30 riders enjoying all Saskairie has to offer. Riders were supplied with a pancake breakfast Saturday morning and a pork dinner with all the fixing’s after the afternoon ride. Local business donated raffle items and a wonderful time was had by all in attendance.

On Friday, July 5 Jeff Cowan (Regina) visited with his parents Gray and Edel Cowan.

On Saturday he visited with some friends in the area, returning home on Sunday.

Adam Cowan visited at the Cowan Farm with Grandma, Grandpa and Uncle Jeff. He then enjoyed a few hours of quading before heading back home to Estevan.

On the way home he met up with Uncle Jeff and friends. They all spent some time fishing – they report that they were fairly successful.

All of the Potapinski siblings – Willie (Judy) and their children and grandchildren (AB), Agatha (Regina), Loretta (Grant Stevens) and family (Regina), Michelle (Collin) Sauder and family (Hodgeville, SK), Carey Lynn (Kevin Tyndall) and family which also include their grandchildren (Cando, ND), were visiting at the Potapinski farm with Ken and Diane and family. They all attended the Potapinski/Fouillard wedding.

During most of the ceremony there was a lite, gentle shower, which of course means they were “Showers of Happiness” that will bring the young couple Good Luck in their marriage. The yard was beautifully decorated with pots of flowers and barn wood signs, a photo gallery of the families wedding pictures (Grandma and Grandpas, Mom and Dads, and siblings) which was very interesting. There were even games set up on the lawn in a different area for some to entertain themselves while waiting for Bride and Groom to return form their ride-around. The reception area included a tent and the Quonset which was also very nicely decorated for the occasion.

Following the reception a dance was held bringing the day end. Congratulations and Best Wishes Colby and Celine as you now entre your next adventure together.

The young couple will be making their home on a farm north of Alida.

Adam Cowan and his friend Chrissy (Estevan) visited with his grandparents Gray and Edel on Sunday, July 7 where they had lunch and enjoyed more quading.

Shelly Cowan and daughter Ainsley left for Minot on Sunday, July 7 where they visited with the Nilsen family and welcomed parents Myron and Orlys back home from their winter residence in Arkansas.

We’ve had a few thunder boomers with showers this past couple of weeks, very much appreciated it as moisture was surely needed. We received another half inch of rain in the wee early hours of July 8, garden and crops will benefit from the moisture. Of course the weeds in garden are also growing fast, got through weeding about half of it, now will have to wait a day or two before getting out there to do more weeding – a never ending job.

Ainsley Cowan accompanied her grandmother Edel Cowan to Estevan on Friday, June 28 where Grandma got her new glasses. They did some shopping and also visited with Kelsey Rydberg for a few moments before heading home to Alida.

On July 1 friends and family gathered at Tim Cowan’s camper at Moose Creek Regional Park for a Canada Day supper and to watch the Roughriders football game. Hope everyone had a great Canada Day celebration.

On Sunday, June 30 Dale and Holly Anthony went to the Red Barn and met up with her brother and his wife as well as wife’s brother, they also saw lots of other people from Alida. Then on Monday, July 1 Dale participated in the Redvers’ Canada Day parade with his John Deere L. Later in the day he travelled to Meyronne, SK to visit his sister Hazel.

Then accompanied by their brother Wayne and Hazel’s daughter Sherri they went to Mankota to a cousin where they all attended a family reunion, on their mother’s side. The following day he also helped Hazel with some repairs before heading back to Alida on July 4.

Brian and Margaret Peet left on June 27 for Viking, AB where they visited with daughter Joleen and Paul Hoffman and family. The grandsons, Connor and Cole returned home with them (July 7) for a couple of weeks. Their granddaughters, Claire and Alice Mowchenko (Estevan) also came for a week’s holiday. They will all be participating in swimming lessons and enjoying the pools

Circle of Friends relived Childhood Memories.

Marie told of washing clothes by hand on a scrub board, with lye soap. They were hung on the clothesline, (frozen in winter), and the irons were heated on the kitchen stove.

Ralph Mills had a generator which ran a power washer, and the clothes dried in a sun porch.

Violet’s Hungarian family were living in a sod shack with mud plastered walls. Her mom cuddled the kids to keep them warm.

Mariann’s son tripped as he carried in the pail of water. “Look, Mom running water.”

Fred walked 4 miles one day to bring the cows home for milking.

He saved for a bicycle, but a cow sat on it.

Grace liked milking cows and gathering eggs.

Ruth walked 3.5 miles to town to get butter, and go to Girl Guides.

Clifford’s Mom died when he was four, and his sister looked after them.

Gladys’ family of ten, were mostly born at home. They were really excited when the older siblings came home.

Like Leora, they had lots of chores, and made up their games.

Ralph Burke’s most vivid memory was of a church conference at Erickson’s when a flock of pigeons fluttered above the speaker’s head.

Carol lived hear the Prince Albert penitentiary, and her father kept a rifle near the door, in case an escaped criminal.

Joyce said, we didn’t have much, but we always had what we need-

ed. “Her best buy was a Big Nickel writing pad from Eatons, on which she began her writing hobby.

Some many books, so little time. I recently read,”The Professor and the Housekeeper”, by Yoko Ogawa. The professor is a brilliant Math teacher who after a traumatic brain injury has only 80 minutes of short term memory. She is an astute housekeeper hired to care for him. The professor’s mind is full of elegant equations from the past and he constantly makes connections from simple everyday events to the universe at large. Eventually her 10-year-old son benefits from this relationship. I really enjoyed this story.

Keep your eyes on the goal

By Linda Wegner It was while cutting heavy brown paper to wrap around a parcel destined to another province that I realized the truth that I wanted to share in this week’s offering. That truth comes from a most simple action. You see, for years the simple task of cutting paper the right size usually resulted in a hunk far too long on one side and, usually, too short on the other. Unless I got a ruler and drew a line, the results were rarely what I’d envisioned.

Years ago someone (can’t even remember who) encouraged me to look at the place I wanted to end up rather than trying to navigate my cutting edge by keeping my eyes on where the scissors were. Bingo!

It worked and now I simply make a mark at the edge of the paper and as I cut, I keep my eyes on that. I can’t say I never goof up but nearly all the time I stay right on track. That simple approach has saved me a lot of frustration, wasted paper, and…well, I won’t say what else.

Lately I’ve been richly blessed as I’ve listened to a daily broadcast by Chuck Swindoll. In a series titled, ‘Laugh Again’ he points out that none of us is perfect but the important thing is that we keep moving forward in our Christian walk. Keeping our eyes on Christ rather than on those places where we’ve failed in the past or on selfish ambitions we aim for in the future, is the ultimate solution to frustration and a too frequent feeling of condemnation or discouragement. Keeping our eyes on Him provides peace that comes from growing without grovelling and guidance without guilt. Sure, we’ll fail at times but joy will prevail over discouragement.

Graduation and life lessons

By Ken Rolheiser Billionaire Robert F. Smith promised to pay off the college debt of 400 seniors at Morehouse College, Atlanta, amounting to $40. million dollars. All he asked in return was that they pay it forward.

I shared this lesson on generosity with a Graduating class I addressed recently. I suggested that this was the fellow they should have asked to speak at their graduation.

We shared Acts 3:1-10 where Peter and John were going to the temple and met the lame man asking for help. Peter said, “I have neither silver nor gold. But I will give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!”

I suggested that the churches in Canora had something greater to offer than money. Our prayer support will continue throughout their lives. And the exciting life Peter and John had, we too can have. God is calling all of us to serve as his disciples.

I shared this story: Timmy’s mother asked her neighbour Shirley Goodnest if she would follow him at a distance on his first days at school. Shirley agreed, since she went walking with her toddler anyway.

Later Timmy’s mother asked him how he enjoyed walking to school alone. “Well I’m not really alone,” he said. “Shirley Goodnest and her daughter are following me everyday.”

“Does that bother you,” asked the mother?

“No,” said Timmy. “It says in the bible ‘Shirley Goodnest and Marcy shall follow you all the days of your life.’ And I might as well get used to it.”

“The prayer and support of your teachers, clergy, neighbours, and parents will continue through your life’s journey. GET USED TO IT!” I told them.

God has also given us angels to be with us constantly. And God does not have any bad days. Think about that in a travel companion!

Daily introspection and prayer assist us on our journey. A Zen proverb says, “You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes every day — unless you’re too busy. Then you should sit for an hour.”

My little checklist of advice to the Grads included: DON’T GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS. Sometimes they are fulfilled later in your life, God willing!

Sometimes God comes up with a better plan.

NOURISH YOUR SPIRITUAL LIFE. A man walks into a doctor’s office with a carrot stuck in his ear and an asparagus spear dangling from his nostril. “Doctor, I feel terrible,” he says. What’s wrong with me?” “I’m not sure,” says the doctor, “but I can tell you’re not eating right.”

Feed your spirit right! Never forget your family, your church, your teachers, your community and the values they have imparted to you. Continue nourishing your spiritual roots, your values.

Obituaries Verna Ruth BurkLangley (nee: Lake) 1940 - 2019

Verna Ruth BurkLangley (nee: Lake) passed away peacefully on Monday, July 1, 2019, at the age of 79 years, beloved wife of James “Jim” Langley of Medicine Hat. She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Richard “Rick” (Laura) Burk of Edmonton, Kelly Burk of Salt Springs Island, B.C. and Chelsea (Don) Geldreich of Bow Island; her grandchildren, Matthew (Shari) Burk, Jonathan (Kelsey) Burk, Aaron (Stephanie) Burk, Jesse Dollimont (Fiancé Jeff Kynoch), Logan Geldreich and Bensen “Ben” Geldreich (Jordyn Becker); �ive great grandchildren, Felicity “Fizz”, Anson, Elias, Aurora and Noah; Jim’s children: Jamie A. (Erin) Langley, Patti (David) Occleston and Andrea (Doug) Hudson and their families; one brother, Charles “Chuck” (Beth) Lake; one sister Alice Klein as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Eliza and George Lake; three brothers, Bill (Shirley) Lake, John (Iona) Lake and Lovell Lake; two sisters, Mary (Hank) Breault and Margaret Lake, as well as a brother in law, Albert Klein. Verna was born on January 30, 1940 in Stoughton, Saskatchewan where she was raised. In the 50’s she moved to Swift Current and in 1959 she married Lorne Burk. Verna was an entrepreneur and ahead of her time. The family moved from Swift Current to Medicine Hat in 1969 and later to Redcliff in 1970. From Telephone Operator to waitressing to selling insurance, where she was the �irst female “�ield-man” for Met Life, owning a book store, selling Real Estate, and of course her longest job, being known as the Red Headed Record Store Lady who knew EVERYTHING about music, running her store Arcade Records for 26 years.

In 1982, she met Jim Langley and they were married on December 28, 1984 in Medicine Hat. Verna and Jim moved to Bow Island in 2004 eventually returning to Medicine Hat. She was active in Al Anon where she developed life long relationships from the time she moved to Medicine Hat. The funeral service was held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Friday, July 5, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Rick Burk of�iciating. Interment has taken place in Hillside Cemetery. Patricia Ann (nee Bague) Obrigewitsch 1947 - 2019

Heaven welcomed home the most beautiful soul on Thursday, June 27, 2019. Patricia Ann passed away after a 4 year hard fought, courageous battle with breast cancer at the age of 71.

Pat was born on July 6, 1947, the middle child to John and Madge Bague of the Kipling District , where she grew up and took her schooling. During her high school years she met her soulmate, Ross Obrigewitsch and were married on April 21, 1965. They purchased a grain and cattle farm and settled into married life.

Their family started to grow with the addition of their children, Trent and Shannon. Pat embraced being a mother completely while still being very involved as a farm wife. Many friendships were made with the neighbours close to their farm.

In 1979, they moved into Kipling where Pat worked outside of the home in retail. Her friendly and easy going manner enhanced her position when working with the public. Once the kids graduated, life took on a new path with a move to the Kenosee Lake area.

A place that held so many memories to both Pat and Ross; both as young teenagers, spending summers down there raising their own kids and now planning towards retirement one day.

Pat started working at Moose Mountain Lodge in Carlyle until her retirement. Once retirement arrived the motorhome was off and running. First stop was a 10 week trip to Alaska - a once in a lifetime road trip!

Sadly retirement was cut short due to an initial diagnose of stage 4 Mestastic Breast Cancer.

Throughout Pat’s life she enjoyed so many wonderful things; �ishing trips, camping with family and friends, vacations, a passion for reading, gol�ing, crocheting, knitting, a good movie, watching a gentle rain fall and baking. Her �irst love was being with family �irst and foremost. Spending time with Ross, her kids and grandchildren and their small pets brought her so much joy and happiness.

Sweetheart, there are no words to describe how broken and sad our hearts are without you. Mom, your loving heart, your kindness, strength and courage will live forever in us. Grama, you will always be our hero. We all love you to the moon and back.

Pat is survived by her loving husband Ross of 54 years of marriage, her children; Trent (Lee) and Shannon, her grandchildren; Katie (Ryan), Nathan (Jen), Eve, Seth, Lara, Jonas and Caleb, her sisters Gaileen and Donna (Darrell) as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

In keeping with Pat’s wishes a private family gathering will be held at a later date. You have all made a very dif�icult time easier and for that we are grateful.

Arcola Daycare welcomes special visitors

On June 30, Constable Dani Zaya stopped in for a visit at the Arcola Daycare. He was treated to stories and lots of questions from the children, who were excited to learn about his tools and explore the RCMP vehicle too.

Supreme Ambulance EMT’s Kass and Arvy visit with the Arcola Daycare on July 4. The children enjoyed exploring the equipment and visiting.
