White Bear Pow Wow wows spectators By Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net On July 5, 6, and 7 the White Bear First Nations welcomed dancers from all over Canada and the US. Charles Belisle of the Oneida/Chippewa First Nation spends half the year traveling to pow wows from his home in New York State. The Oneida First Nation originated in New York State and was relocated to Wisconsin. Wearing either a red or green coat, bear claws and deer toes, and cuffs embossed with a turtle to represent the Turtle Clan on his mother’s side and an eagle for the Ojibway on his father’s side, he dances the Eastern Woodland style. Douglas Scholfield of the Wintu Tribe from Redding California is one of those competitors who has travelled to the pow wow. He competes in the men’s Fancy Dance and will attend 35-40 pow wows this year. With 42 years of dancing under his belt it is no surprise that he would take first place.
