1933 - 2020
Raymond Harvey McNeil, resident of Calgary, Alberta, formerly of Redvers, Saskatchewan, passed away suddenly on June 27 at Foothills Hospital at the age of 86 years. He was born on July 26, 1933 in Arcola, Saskatchewan. His dad being a principal, meant they lived in many different communities throughout his childhood-Yellow Grass, Biggar, and Redvers to name a few. His love of music started early. He would sneak his dad’s saxophone and play for hours. When the Smilin’ Johnny Band came to Redvers he played a tune with them, after which they asked him to travel across Canada. He would stop into various schools along the way to write his Grade 11 exams. He was also a very talented curler. At 17 years of age, he won the Grand Aggregate Curling Championship beating out several more established curlers. That created quite a buzz! His life changed forever when he tripped a pretty, young blonde on the school steps. Ray and Ivy were married on October 2, 1953. Ray lived a busy life helping in raising 6 redheads, farming, participating in the local Elk association, and supporting his musical talent. He played with several different bands developing many music friends. He passed on his musical talent to family members who also found joy in a sweet melody. It may not have been his country music style, to which he made sure that you knew “anything not country wasn’t really music. He will be remembered as a man on a mission. Everything he did was with “genius” focus, determination and zeal. He solved the Rubic’s cube in 14 moves, made his Saxophone play by itself with an inserted computer chip, before most people knew what a computer was, and when trials came his way, he became a role model in perseverance, discipline and courage to overcome. He retired to Redvers in 1985, and to Calgary Westman village in 2018. Even through years of heart issues and surgeries, he continued to live a full life, giving leadership at the Golden Age Center, playing music, tinkering with gadgets, and in recent years giving rides on his scooter, feeding great-grandchildren cookies before supper and going adventuring everywhere at Westman Village and even further in Calgary on his scooter. He had a big smile and tender, yet feisty spirit. He summarized his life well in a song he wrote called Ray’s One -Man Band. “I like to entertain you; it makes me feel so good to see you laugh and enjoy yourself like everybody should. I never made the big time, but I always had the beat. If I ever meet in heaven, with all my music friends, we will jam those pearly gates and hope it never ends.” He will be sadly missed: By his wife: Ivy Leona (Dangstorp) McNeil; by his sisterin-law Yvonne (Russill) McNeil: Children: Ben and Donna (McNeil) Klaassen; Dallas McNeil, Ray and Debra (McNeil); Dwaine and Kathy (Bourgon) McNeil, Dean and Teresa (Okyere) McNeil; Mike and Deltra (McNeil) Powney; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Victor and Catherine (Rae) McNeil and his siblings: Gordon and sister Vicky (McNeil) Merrifield, Dick and sister Merlice (McNeil) Metzger; brother Don McNeil and daughter-in-law Nancy (Mott) McNeil (wife of Dallas). A memorial service will take place on July 26th, (what would have been his 87th birthday) for immediate family members. Miss you dad. Thanks for all you taught us about life and living. No words we write can ever say How much we miss you every day. As time goes by the loneliness grows, How we miss you nobody knows. We think of you in silence and often speak your name, But all we have are memories and photos in a frame. No one knows our sorrow, Rarely have they seen us weep, But the love we have for you Is in our hearts to keep. We’ve never stopped loving you, We know we never will. Deep inside our hearts, You are with us still. Heartaches in this world are many, But ours are worse than any. Our hearts still ache as we whisper low, “I love you and I miss you so.” Love always, Philip, Sarah, Norma, Lee, Renae, Ramona 9-1
