Author “comes home” for book signing

By Kelly Johnson The Observer On Saturday, Jan. 25 the Carlyle and Manor Branches of the Southeast Regional Library were hosts to author H. C. Hewitt, who was doing a Meet and Greet for her most recently published book, “Letters from Jacob”. Corinne Hewitt now resides in Hanna, Alberta. Her and her family moved there in 2006.

Hewitt was in the Carlyle branch in the morning and I caught up to her in Manor for the afternoon session. Brittany Aalbers is the librarian at the Manor branch, where Hewitt presented her most recent publication, as well as some home-baked cookies.

Living in Hanna, Hewitt was soon to open a quilt shop and began designing quilt patterns to go with her books.

She frequently makes the trip back to the Cannington area where she grew up on a family farm.

Robbie Burns Night a treat for all

Saturday evening, January 25 people were gathered at the Memorial Hall in Carlyle to celebrate the life and poems of Robbie Burns, Scotland’s most favoured person. Don Morgan was the night’s Master of Ceremonies.

The celebration is organized by the Abba Masonic Lodge and was first held in Alameda approximately 10 years ago. The celebration moved to Carlyle when the event out-grew the allowed capacity that the venue in Alameda could accommodate.

The celebration was well attended with a group of 16 coming from Moosomin and many other communities in the area including. Carnduff, Carlyle, Gainsborough and Oxbow to name a few.

The star of the show is definitely the Haggis, which is made of sheep’s pluck, barley and seasoned with spices and salt and is traditionally stuffed in a sheep intestine. As well, it is served with coleslaw, turnips, mashed potatoes and gravy and roast beef and a Scottish pudding.

The Haggis was ceremonially introduced, paraded around the room by Troy LeBlanc, accompanied by bagpiper Regan Miller. It is then set on a table and the chosen speaker, Regan Miller addressed the Haggis, drew a knife and sliced it from end to end.

The dinner was served buffet style and everyone was treated to this traditional Scottish dish.

A duo, comprised of Morgan and Donna Turk, was the entertainment for the evening, with Morgan on guitar and Donna on fiddle.

The toast to Robbie Burns was given by Robert Anderson and Rolland Bouchard gave the “Toast to the Lassies”, which was rebutted by Jenn Sedor.

Troy LeBlanc read a couple poems by Robbie Burns and Regan Miller played a medley of tunes on the bagpipes.

Morgan and Donna Turk then returned to the stage to continue the night’s entertainment.

Local pension funds could emerge from upheaval

By Murray Mandryk We all bear the responsibility of making the country we live in a better place.

This is something that seems lost on the #wexit crowd … and perhaps a few other enablers who are contributing to the climate of upheaval by griping rather than providing solutions.

This does not mean Westerners, especially, those in areas that are under-represented like rural Saskatchewan, don’t have legitimate concerns.

It can certainly be argued we need to do more in Saskatchewan and Alberta to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and it can be argued that conservativeminded governments have been obstreperous in this regard for reasons that have to do with politics.

Moreover, it can surely be argued the federal Liberal government has demonstrated it does not grasp rural and western concerns regarding why we need to burn fossil fuels to simply exist in the sparse, cold place we call home. Simply applying a tax on gasoline and other fossil fuels has not been an answer.

The problem, however, is that going back and forth in this debate with neither side giving so much as an inch has gotten us next to nowhere.

What far too often happens is people get set in their ways and simply rule out the possibility of exploring anything else, regardless of how reasonable it might be.

This is the criticism that’s rightly been levelled by the west when it comes to the reluctance of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to consider alternatives to the carbon tax.

But maybe if we all kept an open mind, wouldn’t spend so much time spending our wheels.

For example, one of the things emerging from the West’s frustrations is a push by Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s government for a “Fair Deal for Alberta.”

And one of the arguably more practical things Kenney’s United Conservative Party government is exploring is the prospect of Alberta withdrawing from the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and starting up an Alberta Pension Plan.

It’s an idea that’s already been met with a lot of resistance. However, it’s caught the attention of former Saskatchewan Party premier Brad Wall, who recently openly wondered on Twitter whether its time to explore a “Buffalo Pension Plan” involving both Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Perhaps Wall was being a bit politically cheeky.

Others offer the less kind assessment that the former politician of making political trouble or doing the bidding of the investment or oil communities that might stand to benefit from this.

But instead of accusations maybe we should all ask: Is this this a feasible, workable and perhaps even a good idea?

Well, the Alberta government is sure making a case for. A study conducted by the Alberta Investment Management Corp. (AIMCo) and obtained by the Calgary Herald suggested: “By withdrawing from CPP, Albertans would see ‘a substantial benefit’ as their costs to contribute to a provincial plan would drop.’

That could include a “decrease to at least 7.21 per cent from the base levels in the current CPP of 9.9 per cent,” the report said.

AIMCo manages more than $115 billion in assets from 31 pensions, endowments and government funds, so it’s not like they don’t know what they are talking about.

Here in Saskatchewan, we have TD Greystone that emerged from Regina-based Greystone Investment, a private pension management fund that got its start 30 years ago as the Investment Corp. of Saskatchewan that used to manage government pension funds.

Of course, there are problems and costs and, in the end, separate provincial funds may prove to be not that great an idea.

But shouldn’t we at least consider some of the opportunities that might be emerging from this upheaval?

After all, hasn’t all this upheaval been over the need to consider change and news ideas?

Being upstaged by a dog The stadium is ready, rosters are set, and fans are excited to cheer. The Super Bowl? Well, yes, Super Bowl LIV takes place this Sunday, but so does the 16th annual Puppy Bowl.

The adorable event will feature 96 puppies from 61 animal shelters. The puppies play inside a miniature Plexiglass stadium fully stocked with toys, including some with cameras inside to give Shelley Luedtke a puppy eye’s view of the action.

It takes about 100 hours of footage shot over several days to edit into a two-hour program for viewing on Animal Planet and in that time more than 500 doggie treats are consumed, and a lot of peanut butter is used to entice the puppies to lick the fan favorite puppy-kiss cams.

Proving that people can’t resist puppies, 100% of the animals who participated in the Puppy Bowl have found homes. The same goes for the kittens featured in the halftime show. Baby animals can have that effect on us and easily elicit oohs and aahs that leave us wanting to care for and protect them.

Of course it isn’t just animals. Bring a baby into a room and watch the smiles that quickly follow. That is a good thing. A beautiful thing. Babies are precious.

Yet while our concern for animals seems to continue as they grow into mature creatures, the same care doesn’t as easily extend to human beings. The welfare of animals can jumpstart big actions in us, but we don’t seem to have the same zealousness for our fellow human beings. Something changes in adulthood.

Sometimes it’s funny. I can work on a story or column for many hours to varying degrees of response from readers. But take a picture of a dog in front of a Christmas tree and the positive reaction that pours in is staggering. Goodness it is humbling to be upstaged by a St. Bernard! But on the other end of things are consequences far more serious.

We would find it unconscionable to shout obscenities at a snuggling infant, yet profanity laced outbursts at adults let loose from the bleachers at sporting events, or at professionals on the job, or splashed across screens when reacting to an event or individ-

ual. Yes, babies are innocent, but those adults were at one time snuggling infants, too. At what point did we go from seeing that little baby as precious, to thinking that adult can now be a punching bag?

The baby is vulnerable, but aren’t we all vulnerable at times?

On the weekend I saw reports, seemingly unrelated, yet strikingly similar. One featured interviews with those who officiate on fields, diamonds and in arenas in increasingly hostile situations.

The abusive language heaped on them, along with slashed tires and keyed cars is causing many to question why they continue to do it.

The second was a look at PTSD among the ranks of those in law enforcement in places where people have declared them the enemy. They then have to go out and protect those calling for their deaths.

The third was an online article analyzing the impeachment proceedings south of the border. I made the mistake of reading posts in the comment section and cringed at the viciousness of what was being said. Without a doubt it is a polarizing issue, but do politicians or lawyers—on either side of the aisle— deserve to be the object of such ferocious attack?

Why do people feel it is okay to act this way?

Where does the sense of entitlement come from to lash out at someone who is not that different from ourselves? Years ago that referee, police officer or government official was born and people oohed and aahed over the preciousness of the new baby. Years later, strangers decide it’s okay to be incredibly cruel to that same precious life. Oh I know, I know. They deserve it because just look at what they did, right?

Well, if we want to continue engaging in sports, or live in safer communities or hope good people will run for public office, we better re-think what we’re doing.

There’s something about frolicking puppies that brings out a desire to love and protect. Those puppies grow into dogs and we continue to be diligent in our care for them. Isn’t the baby that grows into adulthood worthy of the same regard we extend to that animal?

The MVP at last year’s Puppy Bowl (yes, they give out a Most Valuable Puppy award), was a Lab/ Chow Chow mix named Bumble. The key to civility, kindness and respect for humanity is not that everyone is most valuable, but that everyone is valued.

That’s my outlook.

RCMP preparing for a ball

By David Willbert Estevan Mercury Three RCMP detachments are going to host an event that will give people an extra reason to look forward to Valentine’s Day, while they support a valuable cause in the southeast region.

The RCMP Regimental Charity Ball will happen on Feb. 14 at the Beefeater Plaza. Cocktails will be served at 5:30 p.m. and supper will be at 6:30. Comedian Kelly Taylor will provide the entertainment, starting at 9 p.m.

The event is being hosted by employees from the Estevan, Carlyle and Carnduff RCMP detachments, as well as the Integrated Border Enforcement Team.

It is open to the public and it will involve some RCMP tradition. There will be several RCMP members in attendance in their ceremonial red serge.

In an email to Southeast Lifestyles, Sgt. Jeff Clarke with the Estevan RCMP said the main purpose is to raise funds for Southeast Regional Victim Services, but to also put on a formal yet social event for people in the southeast corner.

The event will also have a couple of speakers.

The keynote address will be courtesy of the commanding officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP, Assistant Commissioner Mark Fisher, and South District Officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP Superintendent Kevin Kunetzki.

Tickets are $75 each and those who attend are asked to wear semi-formal attire.

Saundra Corkish enjoyed several days in Yorkton recently where she attended the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling.

Jay and Kristi Leader, Harper and Asher have moved to Cochrane AB. We wish them well in their new home.

These past two weeks I have been receiving meals from Hello Fresh. They are delivered to the door and include instructions and everything you

need for each meal. To date some of the meals have been Piadinas, Fajitas, Beyond Meat Burger, Chicken Parmigiana and Beef Ragout. It only takes 30 minutes to prepare. Next week I will try a week from Good Food. I can see how handy these would be for working parents and it also introduces some new ideas for regular foods.

Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • For all of those out there getting involved in illegal Social Media lottery groups . . . wait, yes, you heard me correctly, they are illegal. Remember, if it is too good to be true it is more than likely illegal. We recently had an investigation where we told the individual involved that social media lotteries were illegal. This individual then checked with SLGA who confirmed it was illegal. The individual then checked with their lawyer who confirmed it was illegal. At that time the individual contacted the investigator to say, “It is illegal”, which we were aware of. Really, we don’t make this stuff up, nor do we make up the laws and rules we enforce.

• False alarms, mental health act and child welfare matters resulted in several calls for service.

• An intoxicated individual became combative with another individual, which resulted in a phone call to the Police. Upon arrival the individual chose to be combative with the Police, which resulted in an arrest and a brief stay in cells. The complainant did not want charges and the Members utilized discretion instead of laying charges of resist arrest or assaulting a Police Officer. Unfortunately we are very aware of this individual and

• We know it is winter but some people do ride bikes, as do many of our youth. Unfortunately, some of the people riding the bikes should not be doing so being they are riding a bike that was stolen. If you are missing a bike please check with your local RCMP Detachment being they may have your bike.

• Some neighbours don’t get along. Sometimes to the point they call each other names and then somebody calls the Police. We basically told them to ignore each other. Remember sticks and stones will break your bones, but names will never hurt you.

• Sometimes our job is made easier. One such example is when an individual showed up to the Detachment in an intoxicated state. The Members determined it was in the best interest for the individual to spend the night and provided them a ride home the following day. Door to door delivery.

• Like all areas of the country, let alone the world we are dealing

with substance abuse and yes we have a Methamphetamine issue as well. We are working on it, however, it is an addiction and mental health issue as well and we as the Police can only do so much.

• We had a collision which resulted the need to have EMS and the Fire Department respond. Both operators of the motor vehicles were injured with the one driver being charged for driving with undue care and attention and failing to wear a seatbelt.

• Just because you can buy it and put it on your vehicle means it is legal. Only white and yellow lights can face forward and only red lights can face to the back of your vehicle.

Larger trucks often have yellow lights on the side as well. Green and blue lights are illegal on any roadway, street or highway. You can’t have them on your vehicle and light them up in your parking lot, but you can operate the vehicle with them on.

• We know that you are in a rush, we know that you need to get past that pesky school bus, however, if the red lights

are on and the stop arm is out you can not pass the school bus in either direction. We are investigating such an incident and are in the process of locating the owner of the offending vehicle.

• Members issued approximately 5 tickets and 15 warnings over the last week.

• Tickets were issued for failing to stop at a stop sign -$230, drive with undue care and attention -$280, obstructed licence plate - $150, fail to wear a seatbelt - $175, expired drivers licence - $150, and the most expensive speeding ticket was for $210.

• Warnings were issued for window tint, inadequate windshield, fail to produce drivers licence, driving with undue care and attention, obstructed licence plate, having lights of a colour other than yellow or red displayed on a vehicle, inadequate mudflaps, inadequate licence plate lights, fail to signal, and speeding.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate day time running lights, inadequate windshield, inadequate licence plate lights, and inadequate headlights.

Maryfield Villa News Submitted by Janet Mark Circle of Friends this week chose Memory Work.

Carol and Janet chose Trees: “I think that I shall see,” do not know the version which Janet sang.

Clifford remembered them singing as they picked stones. Mariann greets her table each morning with “Good Morning to you,” As we sang in Grade 1 – 3. Fred often uses a Russian prayer of his parents.

Joyce know all the alphabet backwards, and recited In Flanders Fields, as she often did on November 11th. Leora recited the first German poem she learned, and Margaret learnt the names of plants and birds. Ralph Burke’s favorite was The Swing. Grace’s first was Mary Had a Little Lamb.

Ralph Mills said that “Poetry froze to ice in my brain.” Marie said that “I learnt to smoke in school

and quit when I was 75.

Jean (Dennis) Bognar and Joe Cornforth entertained us this week. Jean learnt to hold an audience from childhood, and still delights in making people laugh. Joe Cornforth, who used to do HomeCare here, sang and played the mouth organ and mandolin. Years ago he helped us set up a horseshoe pitch, but by the time spring came some of us were gone elsewhere, and no one had the strength to throw even pony shoes.

We also had The L Tones for more toe tapping music: Leona Joseph, singer Larry Gabriel, her guitarist, and Len Downer with his fiddle. What a musician she is, adjusting the sound system continually.

Lift me up

By Linda Wegner Although the definition is simple, encouragement has tremendous power. The ability to provide inspiration, spirit, or hope to someone is far more significant than the word itself might imply. Just this week I was informed of an act of remembrance directed to a former pastor by those affected by his life and ministry.

We were each invited to write a note of personal remembrance of how he touched our lives. Here’s part of what I wrote:” You not only helped heal my wounds by your powerful preaching of the Word but also by your tender and compassionate attitude…”

I will always associate that person with the word “encouragement”.

In his letters to the various churches he founded or the individuals he mentored, the Apostle Paul spoke often on the subject of encouragement either by admonishing others to be an encourager or by passing on appreciation and encouragement to his readers. While we all know it’s relatively easy to do that when things are going well, let’s not forget that Paul was living within the confines

of a jail, awaiting his impending death for standing up for Jesus Christ. His words were not merely theological exhortations, they were urgings from the heart of a man who knew how to draw strength and joy from God even in the direst of circumstances.

Sometimes I find myself looking for opportunities to encourage others for “big things” but often there are folks who could use a word of praise or approval as they carry burdens of which we know nothing. Ask God if there is someone who

needs an extra word of encouragement and take the opportunity to be the bearer of that word.

“May the God who gives endurance and encour-

agement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had” (Romans 15:5) Amen.

Cougars back in action after 20 days off Nicole Currie Sports Contributor After an unexpected 20 days off, the Cougars were back on the ice Saturday, Jan. 25 when they headed down the highway to Arcola to take on the Combines.

The Cougars have three games left and they’re looking for all wins so they can move up in the standings before playoffs begin.

The Blue and White welcomed Josh Hohn, who was back in the crease. Hohn hasn’t played for a few years and so it was good to see him strap the pads back on. Josh and Landon split time in net, each playing a period and a half. Glasser has been sidelined with an injury that we hope heals soon.

The second period was pretty quiet on the board, but had the most penalties, with two for each team. Sam Matthewson lit up the board twice in the second, all on his own. These would prove to be the lone two goals of the period.

The third period wrapped up with a final score of 12-2. Johnstone, Turgeon, Struthers, McGonigal and Fox, each netting one for the Cougars.

This Friday, Jan. 31 will be an action-packed night at the Carlyle Sports Arena when the Flyers come to town and both teams will be battling hard, each needing the win as they’re tied for 5th with 17 points.

Novice Cougars (Chris) see tourney action in Virden Nathan Coffey Sports Contributor The Novice Cougars (Chris) left the comfort of the 306 when they crossed the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border for a tournament in Virden the weekend of Jan 25 and 26, where they brought home a 4th place finish out of 14 teams.

The boys flew out of the gate with an 11-3 win over Elkhorn where they played great on both sides of the puck. Led by “Digger of the Game” recipient. Griffin “Coast to Coast” Eaton, who I’m sure was the top defensemen of the tournament both offensively and defensively.

A shootout challenge followed for any teams in the tourney that wanted to partake, and the tournaments “Team Saskatchewan” Cougars elected to show off the skills of the Fab 4, and Tender “Brickwall” Brown. “Top Cheese”, “The Flash”, “Hands and Hair”, and “Coast to Coast” finished in 2nd.

Leading up to the evening game against a host Virden team Reed “The Rifle” Coffey was

listed as questionable to play with an LBI (lower body injury) sustained in a freak hottubbing accident, but just in time for puck drop, he got the medical go ahead, so the complete line up stayed intact.

The boys played a great defensive game and scored on 10 of their many chances, When asked what the key to success was for this game “Top Cheese” didn’t beat around the bush when he told me, “Passing”. The team pulled some new tricks out of their bags when they treated every fan in the rink to a few perfectly executed One Timers, first “Coast to Coast” Eaton slid one over to “Top Cheese” Light , for a goal that was met with gasps and awe from the hockey crazed Virden fans, then minutes later like a carbon copy “Top Cheese” put the puck on a tee for “Hands and Hair” Puskas with the same result. Both these one timers were very Alex Ovechkin-esque.

Digger Award went to Reed “The Rifle” Coffey for his gritty play through the pain mentality.

Some downtime followed, so the boys ended day one in Virden celebrating “Brickwall” Brown’s birthday with a team party full of dips, pizza, fried chicken, chips, cupcakes, and of course all the mini sticks they could handle. Mini stick Injuries to “Coast to Coast” Eaton’s nose and “Hands and Hair” Puskas forearm occurred, but didn’t affect their play in the slightest.

Day 2 is where the high-flying Cougars hit a little turbulence. The opening game of Sunday was a 14-5 loss to Russell.

The boys played hard but happened to run into some great goaltending, and couldn’t quite get in sync, maybe the jet lag from the travel day prior or a tired bunch from the big birthday bash caught up with them, who knows. Digger Award went to Nik “The Brickwall” Brown who played great despite the outcome.

The final game for the group representing Sask. was in the Aside consulation game where they would take on Grand Plains. Shuf-

games without even breaking a sweat.

As it’s been said, “Before you can really win, you must first learn how to lose.” so the boys can take lessons learned from this 4th place finish, get in a week of practice, and then get back in tourney mode for Moosomin this upcoming weekend.

Dave and Shanna Carriere were happy to welcome their new baby grandson, Bowen Wesley to the family on January 20. Bowen’s parents are Chelsy Minshull and Wesley Sheldon.

Tim and Shelly Cowan spent Jan. 22 in Brandon where they attended the Manitoba Ag Days.

On Jan. 23 Gray and Edel were dinner guests and spent the pleasant afternoon visiting with Murray and Ruth MacFarlane near Glen Ewen.

Later Gray thoroughly enjoyed a ride with Murray in his snow plane.

Parry and Lynette Peet spent the weekend at Melville where they attended the Saskatchewan Women’s Provincial Curling Playoff to watch Amber Holland (Lynette’s sister) participate.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan spent the weekend (January 25-26) in Minot visiting with the Nilsen family and then went skiing at Bottineau on Sunday before returning home to Alida.

I spent another weekend watching curling on television – it was the Canadian Junior Championships.

Both the men and women semi-finals were played on Saturday and the finals on Sunday. Unfortunate Team Saskatchewan lost in the semifinals against Team Newfoundland/Labrador – so no Saskatchewan teams to cheer for in the finals – oh well next year. Team Manitoba won the women’s finals against Alberta – it started out as a real close game and in the end Manitoba walked away with the gold. Team Manitoba won the men’s final by defeating Newfoundland/Labrador – another good game to watch. Both these Manitoba teams will be representing Canada at the World Junior’s in Russia. Those young folks can surely curl – we shall continue to have some great curlers in the near future and Canada should be represented by some great teams.

Go Curlers Go. I also watched some Provincial curling play-offs Sunday evening from Alberta.

Team Rocque and Team Walker were battling it out and Team Walker came out on top and will go on to the Tournament of Hearts in February in Moose Jaw. I only wish they would televise some of the Saskatchewan games as well. Oh yah, Hubby spent most of the weekend in the basement again participating in another radio contest

while I enjoyed the curling with no extra commentating (lol).

See you at the rink this weekend – lots of curling is scheduled as Alida’s annual Oilmen’s Bonspiel is on – come on out and enjoy watching the games and of course a delicious supper on Saturday.

At the Breakfast at the Rink on Sunday, January 26 saw Kitchen Group # 1 in charge and they served up a total of 39 breakfasts – Way to go guys and gals, another successful morning and another job well done. It’s just great to see so many familiar faces coming back each week and enjoying the breakfast. Next week its Kitchen Group # 2 back at the helm – and the question remains – Will they beat or match the Breakfast Challenge total of 60, which was set at the first breakfast?

Only time will tell – see you at the rink.

Arcola Optimist Club holds annual snowmobile rally

By Kelly Johnson The Observer The Optimist Club of Arcola held its 27th Annual Snowmobile Rally on Saturday, January 25. Registration began at 9 a.m. and ran until about 1 p.m.

Blake Brownridge is the president of the Optimist Club and Glen Lawson is the secretaryTreasurer. This year’s Rally chair is Rod Lees.

The Optimist club has been operating for about 40 years. The first rally was started by a group of snowmobilers to raise money for the community theatre restoration. Funds this year will go to Prairie Place Complex and towards the purchase of equipment for the Stars Ambulance landing site at the Arcola Hospital.

Proceeds in the past have gone to the playpark and campground

in Arcola, as well as numerous projects in Carlyle, Lampman and other local area communities.

Prairie Place Complex was once again a hive of activity for this event, that has attracted some years, over 500 participants.

Those attending purchase and draw cards to complete a poker hand. The rally runs a similar format from year to year.

Sledders can venture out on a marked trail and take in a bonfire and concession stand on their ride.

This year the Carlyle and Area Food Bank served chili and baked potatoes with all the trimmings at Prairie to start off the day and then finished with a meal of ham and perogies at the completion of the trail ride.

Numerous raffles and draws were made and presented at conclusion of the event.

Once again this local event was made possible by a myriad of area sponsors and volunteers.

The snow conditions were not great, but riders did enjoy groomed trails in Moose Mountain Provincial Park.

We did hold our annual Trail Stop sponsored by Canadian Energy Services at the Horse Lake Shelter. The trails are maintained by the Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club.

We had about 220 riders and gave out about $10,000 in rider prizes on Saturday Afternoon.

Events at Praire Place Hall in Arcola included Breakfast by the Arcola and District Fire Department, concession by the Carlyle & District Food Bank sponsored by Ridgeline Agriservices and the Beer Gardens sponsored by JJ Trucking.

The 50-50 draw for over $700 was won by Rick Heidinger.
